San Francisco, California was established into a Quarantine Zone. But the group called Fireflies took control over the city. They took the control away from FEDRA (Federal Disaster Relief Agency) and have maintained control over it. The leaders of the city set up meetings with scouts that travel over the country to bring information to different zones and Firefly factions. But when two Fireflies decide they want to leave the Golden Gate city and travel, will they survive and find somewhere else to call home?

Cameron had been born and raised in San Francisco. He remembered FEDRA, how they tried to establish the quarantine zone in the city. The Fireflies were growing in numbers and some cities fell much easier than others. San Francisco fell to the Fireflies around 2022, three years prior. They established themselves as the leaders of the city. Cameron’s parents were part of the revolution, part of the over throw and were high ranking members of the Firefly sect in San Francisco. Of course, that also meant that Cameron was forced to sit outside the meetings by himself, until this year. His parents told him that one of their scouts that was going to be meeting with them had a son.

Excitement had filtered into his body as he heard that. Finally someone else to hang out with. Well someone beside his older brother Devin. Now Cam loves his brother but there’s a gap between them in age and Devin is always so strict and reserved. He’s tried before to get Devin to talk to him and play games with him but often Devin refused and simply walked away. They used to be close when Cameron was younger and their parents were always off. Cameron was currently sitting in the room adjacent to the meeting room, fiddling with some blocks he’d found and Devin was leaning against the door frame, standing guard.

Cameron was bored and couldn’t wait to meet this new kid. Maybe they could play with his blocks together. Or even play other games, he had an old card deck that his dad gave him, and one night when things where quiet, they’d shown both Devin and Cameron how to play some of the old world card games. They were weird but fun and maybe this new friend would be willing to play those games with him. Or maybe they could pull pranks on Devin. That would be fun. He’d tried a few on his own and the results were hilarious each and every time. Cameron rolled the block around the table as he waited.

Nate but old. I will look for a less old Nate.

portrayed by james brenan davies

Nate hated the meetings. He was so bored of meetings. His mama was constantly having to go talk to people about things, and then Nate was having to sit around bored outside of them and hoping that he wouldn’t lose his mind when he had nothing to do. Every time they had to go somewhere, he wished that they could bring Ben and Max who were his absolute bestest buds. No one could make his day like the two of them. But they didn’t get to travel with them ever. Mama said it was too dangerous. Nate thought that was stupid. Ben said they would sneak out with them one day instead of having to stay in that horrible little house with the rest of the orphans. Besides, they weren’t even really orphans anymore. His mama treated them like she was their mama too, so why did they have to do this without them?

She was yapping with some guy while they were walking down this hallway that might have lasted forever. He was not even paying attention to what they were saying, because he was the ripe old age of nine, and he was beyond bored already. This building looked like every other boring building, and it was full of people who were far too serious. He fiddled with the flap of his bag full of books as he wondered which one he should read. They were new. They took them from an abandoned house a couple of days ago. One was a novel and the other was some sort of journal is what his mama said. It had facts from the old days. She told him that it would be boring and shoved this fiction book in his hands. He was pretty sure it would be the other way.

“Go wait in there for me, Nate.” She pointed into the room beside the one that they stopped at. He hadn’t even noticed that they stopped. He peered inside the room that they were standing in front of. There was a handful of adults in there who all looked far too serious. He groaned and walked to the room next door. He was expecting to be utterly bored. He trudged in and paused. There was another person there. A whole other real life person who wasn’t super old and therefore probably boring! “Oh hi!” He walked much quicker, excitement suddenly taking over every part of him. “Hi hello hi!”

Cameron had rolled his blocks some more and turned his attention to his older brother. Devin, just as silent as ever, stared back before rolling his eyes and looking away. A clear sign that he didn’t want to interact with his brother. Okay. Cam sighed and looked back at the block before his attention was turned to the door. The door had been open as they waited for the other kid and then he showed up. Cameron got to his feet and saw the other kid walking quickly in. Once he was in, Devin shut the door and stood in front of it. “Hello! It’s so nice to meet you! My name is Cameron! But you can call me Cam if you want. Who are you?!” Cameron’s voice was excited as he finally got to hang out with a kid his own age instead of all by himself or with the boring grown-ups.

Nate knew a lot of people. Or maybe he had met a lot of people and didn’t actually know any of them. That wasn’t true. He knew some people really well. Like his mama. And Ben and Max. And maybe like Ariel? Yeah, he kinda knew Ariel. But! Maybe he could get to know this person? Cameron. Cam. “Hello, Cam!” Because he was the kind of kid to say hello about a million times. “I’m Nate! Nathaniel actually, but I don’t know if anyone calls me that? ‘Cept my mama. She calls me that all the time. ‘Nathaniel Matthews, what are you doing?’ Bleghhh.” He giggled as he came over to where Cam was. “Does your mom do that? Or dad?” He shouldn’t assume that everyone was like him.

Cameron giggled as he heard the hello again. “Hello Nate!” He said with a smile wide on his face. He shook his head a moment later at that. “My mom calls me Cameron all the time. Especially when I get into trouble. ‘Cameron Lee Harris you stop causing so much trouble around, these people need to focus without you under foot’ and then I’d get put in the timeout chair. Parents.. ugh” Cameron said with a small laugh. “So which city did you come from??” Cam asked as he looked at Nate, his excitement never faltering.

Nate thought about that for a moment. “Um? Boston? Sorta. I have a bed there! And that’s where my friends are. And we go there more often than anywhere else, but we kinda go everywhere. I can’t remember everywhere we’ve gone actually.” He narrowed his eyes as he tried to remember all the places his mama had taken him, and he was only nine. “Your full name is way cooler than mine. I am Nathaniel Evan Matthews. That doesn’t even flow. I told my mama that once and she told me to mind myself. But I was! It was about me!” He shrugged. “Wait, we were talking about Boston, right? Have you gone anywhere else other than here?”

Cameron listened with a smile on his face, green eyes watching the other boy. “Boston? That’s cool! I’ve never been there but I’ve met some people who are going there to help them.” Cam said before he laughed a little. “Really? I think your full name is kinda meet myself. I was named after my mom’s dad. Or well my middle name anyway. His name was Lee. Um. Right Boston.” Cam said, nodding. He narrowed his eyes as he thought for a moment. “I went to Los Angeles once. Back when they were still fighting FEDRA. I was five? It was kind of scary.” Cameron admitted as he looked over at Devin who was listening to the conversation. “Yeah. You were hiding behind my leg during the whole trip.” He huffed out in a deeper voice while Cameron looked away. “I’d never seen FEDRA soldiers before that trip, I was always kept inside our house before that.”

Ew FEDRA. This was Nate’s natural reaction. He disliked all of them. He disliked who they were and who they represented. He may have only been nine, but the influential people around him had very prominent opinions on the matter. “Of course he hid! Those people are scary. They’re murderers you know. They steal children in the night and the hack them up into little pieces and boil them up and serve ‘em for stew.” This was something he once overheard his mama saying to someone else. The context was never clear. He regurgitated it anyway. “That’s why my mama told me we have to fight them. We have to make sure they don’t oppress the people.” He didn’t really know what that meant, but he knew it was wrong.

Cameron didn't like FEDRA, but it was more like they scared him then anything else. He knew what they were capable of, his brother had told him stories of what they did to citizens. It was why they created the Firefly sect here in San Francisco. He heard Nate's comment and even though he always tried to be a brave eleven year old, he shook a little. "No! Really?" He asked nervously, having not heard that before. "I know they oppressed people, that's what my parent's always tell me. They helped take FEDRA down here, which is why they have all these meetings with the other groups and scouts like your mama." He said, glancing at Devin who rolled his eyes. He hated FEDRA, hated what they did and how they forced people to work and controlled how much food they got, where they could go and while he'd only been Cam's age when they started rising up, he would've fought against them too if he'd been old enough.

“Really!” Nate had plenty of horror stories that were attached to FEDRA that came from all over the country. He was not able to parse out the truths behind the exaggerations, but he knew that no matter where they went, FEDRA was bad. In places like Boston, they had too much power. He didn’t know how they were supposed to take them down, but if Cameron’s people could do it, then everyone else could too. “But meh, it’s no fun talking about them. What do you do for fun? Or do you have to be around all those meetings and discussions and planning like I do?” He slumped to the floor and shoved his head in his hands. “I hate when that’s all we get to do, especially when there aren’t nice places like this to stay in.”

Cameron shook his head as he heard that. He didn't want to think about FEDRA, and when Nate asked what he did for fun, Cam smiled. "I have this deck of cards that I play with and ooh these blocks." He said before his attention was drawn to Nate, slumping to the floor and putting his head in his hands. "Usually I have to sit in this room by myself while they're in meetings. It's so boring." He admitted as he slipped down to sit beside Nate. "Wanna play a card game?"

Nate knew what it was like to have to sit around being bored by himself. When they were in Boston, it was better, because there were people he knew there, and places that he could go. When they traveled, it was just terrible. It was nice here, though. Cameron seemed cool. “Sure! What game do you play? I don’t have a deck of cards but one of my friends does, so I think I played a game once.” He looked over at the older boy. “Do you want to play with us?”

Cameron knew how much fun these meetings could be, which was not very in his mind. “I usually play games that one person can do, but I know how to play Go Fish! Wanna do that?” Cam asked as he looked at Nate with a big and excited smile on his face. Devin heard Nate ask him and he shook his head. “Games are for little kids.” He said simply as he leaned against the wall. “I’m just here because he’s..” Devin pointed at Cameron. “Too young to be by himself.” He finished.

Nate was absolutely down with doing anything that Cam wanted to do. Anything. This was already better than how it usually went. Apparently, people did not want to have kids in this kind of world, so there weren’t a whole lot of them around for Nate to call his friends. He was going to be so sad when they had to travel again, and he wasn’t going to be with Cameron. He peered over at the cranky older boy and shrugged. “Aren’t you a kid too?” he asked before turned to Cam and nodding. “Okay, yeah! I played that one!” It was the easy one to teach people who had so little time to learn since they weren’t going to be around long enough to do anything else.”

Cameron looked at Nate when he heard him talk to Devin. His older brother just shook his head and snorted. "No. I'm not." He replied in a gruff tone. He sounded more and more like the soldiers he knew. Cameron rolled his eyes and laughed, looking to Nate. "Awesome! Let's go sit at the table." Cam son, holding his hand out to help Nate to his feet with a happy smile.

Nate grabbed Cameron’s hand and moved up off the floor. He made his way over to the table with him and sat down. “As a warning, I only played this like one time years ago, but I think it was an easy game to follow.” He eyed Devin and wondered if he should ask him to play once more. He chose not to. The dude seemed like he was have a real hard time being a babysitter.

Cam looked at Nate and shrugged. "That's okay, I don't usually get to play it with anyone. I learned how to play it from Devin but he won't play it anymore." He said, shooting his brother a look. Devin rolled his eyes as he looked away. Cam got the cards out and shuffled them before dealing them each seven cards. "Okay, so you look at your cards and pull out any two matching cards if you have them, then you ask me for a card and if I have it, I give it to you and you can go again, but if I don't have it, you have to draw from the deck. Sound familiar?"

Nate really focused on Cam’s words and nodded. “Hey yeah that is the one I played before. Sure, I can play that.” He picked up his cards to begin their game. “I have this buddy back in Boston who has a deck of cards. He plays with them all the time. He knows a million different games. Ones he can play with people and ones he does all by himself. I didn’t know they could be used for so many different things. That’s kind of cool.”

Cameron smiled as he nodded, hearing that. Having him already know the game was easier, but he would've explained it if he had to. Cam picked up his own cards and put down a pair of three's before looking at Nate. "I know a few card games you can play on your own but not many with other people." Cameron admitted as he heard him. "It's kind of neat what people did to entertain themselves in the old world." Cam agreed. "Okay, did you wanna go first or would you like me too?"

Nate examined his cards, realizing that he did not have a single pair in his hand. “Well, since I am your guest and also already unlucky,” he was already laughing which was probably a good sign, “I guess I should go first.” Nate was a laugher. He always had been. He liked to enjoy himself. When it was just him and his mama, he was always the one making her laugh too. She needed it even when she told him that it was ‘highly distracting.’ “Got any fours over there?”

Cam nodded as he saw Nate hadn’t put down any pairs. “Sure, maybe your luck will change by going first.” Cameron said as he heard Nate ask if he had any fours. He looked at his hand and shook his head. “Go fish. Though maybe you’ll get a four when you pick up.” Cameron added as he waited to see what card Nate would pull.

Nate sighed at the answer and grabbed the first card from the pile. “That would be a nope.” It was just his kind of luck not to get what he wanted. This was a numbers game, and Nate had not quite figured that out yet. A numbers game as well as an observation game. Right now, though, he was mostly focused on the fact that he had no pairs. “Maybe your luck will be better?”

Cameron was sad for his new friend but happy to go. “Okay. Hmm. Do you have a two?” Cameron asked, looking at his hand and then he looked over at his brother. Devin had moved from the door to the couch and looked about five minutes from passing out. What a great guard. Though it made a mischievous smile come to his face as to what he could do if his brother did fall asleep.

“Go fish!” Nate declared triumphantly. It was so far his only luck in the game. It was, of course, just starting. He saw Cam take a looked at his brother and smile in a way that definitely spelled trouble. He wanted to know what Cameron was thinking, but he knew asking out loud was a bad idea. Instead, he pointedly looked at his brother and then cocked his head to the side. Hopefully that would be question enough.”
