Slateport City, Hoenn. The port where people and Pokemon cross with nature. That's what the leaflet said, at least. This was the first time Aurelia had come to Hoenn, but not the first time she'd read that slogan. Her mother had, months ago, mentioned it out of the blue when they were eating dinner, and had told Aurelia to search for it if she wanted a nice surprise. After a day of sifting through the regional library's books, she finally found that it had to do with Hoenn's Slateport City, a city perched on a cliffside, looking towards the ocean. And she also found that a one-of-a-kind archaeological exhibition was to be held there in half a year! She'd been mustering up courage to start her own journey, but had been reluctanct and dubitative: the exhibition gave her the final push. And so, a month after having started her own journey in Kalos, she decided to take the ferry all the way to Slateport City. She'd brought a map, a travelogue, a knife, some clothes, some books, a compass, water, plant seeds, her trusty trowel, her own map for annotations and cartography, her notebook for writing, dancing streamers and ribbons... and many other things surely needed for a trip like this. Needless to say, her orange backpack was almost bursting out of its seams. But nevertheless, she managed to fish both maps out and headed towards the Oceanic Museum, where the grand exhibition was taking place.

She hadn't come alone to Hoenn: her three Pokemon were with her at all times. Lily, the Chingling, was content sleeping on Aurelia's head; Cora, the Heliolisk, ambled around Aurelia, eyes squinting at the sight of any possible danger; Adin, the Dedenne, was the one who most frequently wandered away from the group, probably looking for someone to play a prank on, though sometimes she briskly crawled around Aurelia's arms and shoulders too. Thankfully, they arrived safe and sound to the Oceanic Museum. It was located in the eastern district of Slateport, and consisted of a number of dome-shaped buildings all lined up. A large gathering was already waiting outside for the exhibition, and Aurelia headed towards it. The weather was mildly warm, as expected of Hoenn, and so her choice of clothing had been appropiate: knee-length blue jean shorts, a red and white striped shirt, blue socks, blue sneakers, and, of course, her orange fox-ear clip-ons.

Not long after, a row started to form, and Aurelia promptly went to take a place, she wanted to get into that museum as soon as possible and not miss a thing! It was around 12 am when the row started to move and she was finally able to enter. Apparently, the museum only let groups of about 10 people enter at a time, and she was the last one of her group. She bowed to the entrance guard and walked in.

The building had three stories inside, each with stairs at the far left side to go up and down and an elevator next to them. First floor were fossils, second floor were old maps and other similar stuff, third floor were miscellanea. She'd taken her time to observe the fossils, and was now on the second floor. The maps were the most interesting to her, and she was so engrossed on looking at each detail in each map that when she came to her senses she realised Adin was no longer within her sight. Now, normally Heliolisk would be paying attention to that kind of thing, keeping check and all, but she too seemed to take interest in the maps. Not to mention that she'd just befriended Adin three weeks ago, after starting her journey, so their relationship still had to grow. Aurelia frantically looked around for Adin, paced left and right through the room... until she found Adin. The playful Dedenne was just about to jump into the back of a Tropius. Aurelia rushed there but couldn't make it... although she stumbled and fell to the ground... just in front of the Tropius and... a brown-haired girl? Cora had been able to grab Adin before she could do anything regrettable. Lily had woken up just in time to hop from Aurelia's head. Aurelia looked up... she stared at the girls hazel eyes for a moment before standing up and bowing slightly. "Sorry!!" she exclaimed. "Uhm, Adin, I mean, my Dedenne, was about to do something a bit reckless so I came as fast as I could... I hope she didn't cause you any trouble?" she explained. Lily jumped up into Aurelia's hands, who grabbed her and held her tightly. "If... if she did, I'll make it up to you." She found it hard to focus on the girl's eyes so she looked away, diverting her attention to the interesting old Hoenn rivers map that stood next to them.

After Winona bid Vivianne farewell, the gym leader returned her Altaria and Skarmory to their Poke Balls and headed to the Slateport Market. Vivianne waved and thanked her a second time; Winona had gone through the trouble of flying her to Slateport, after all, and she hoped to return the favor some day. For now the brunette readjusted her green backpack and looked around at the unfamiliar sights. Excitement left a large grin on her face.

Going on a Pokemon journey had not been her idea. She thought she would be content with staying in her hometown, Fortree City, and going straight into nursing school. It was always best to get a headstart on your career, right? Winona, who she’d become good friends with over the years, had said otherwise. She insisted that every person should travel a little to expand their world experience. It hadn’t taken much convincing until Vivianne agreed. The thought of meeting interesting new people and seeing more of Hoenn’s nature was too appealing, so when she heard of the archaeological exhibition in Slateport City, she decided it was the perfect way to kick off her journey.

Tucking her long hair behind her ear, she walked to the Oceanic Museum. She wore a red t-shirt that was tucked into mid thigh blue jean shorts, brown boots, sunflower earrings, and a necklace with a Poke Ball attached. The Poke Ball belonged to her loyal Tropius, Fernie.

She arrived at the museum quite early and got in line. Once Vivianne got inside, she went straight to the third floor. She was most interested in this area, which exhibited various artifacts, from ancient cups to rusted swords. Some people may think items had less value when they were old or broken, but not her. It just gave the items more character! Back at home, she had a habit of picking up random things that people tossed aside. Sure cracked Revives were useless, but they looked cool! And she had made many little crafts out of broken Poke Ball pieces.

After a few minutes she decided to let Fernie out. He narrowed his eyes at all the strangers around; he was just like a grumpy old man watching out for his grandkid. Vivianne patted his neck, and he relaxed enough to look through the exhibits as well. But he seemed more interested in the maps below, so they went to the second floor, and he stopped at a particular map.

Then, out of the corner of her eye, she spotted a mouse Pokemon darting toward Fernie. Then a girl came running toward them, and thankfully what she thought was a Heliolisk--she’d seen one on television the other day--stopped the mouse from jumping on Fernie.

“It’s fine,” Vivianne reassured, and then gestured toward the Tropius. “See? No harm done!” she said, despite Fernie’s huff of annoyance saying otherwise. “Are you all right, though? It looked like you fell hard.”

When the girl answered her, she managed to get a good look at her. She sported brown boots, jean shorts, worn a necklace and earrings—which contrasted with Aurelia's bare neck and ears—, and a red shirt. Simple, but classy. Aurelia decided then and there that she liked the sunflower earrings. She was glad that she took it well, she hadn't been able to meet many people yet in her travels, and she didn't want to cause a bad impression on them. Her Pokemon, though, didn't see to be as thrilled with the apology. Aurelia didn't exactly know what to do know, but she hoped it was just annoyance. Cora protectively shifted near the Tropius, just in case; Adin still fished in Cora's hand. Lily just looked expectantly at the girl.

"Eh? Ah! Yes! All good!" Truth be told, her elbows were slightly bruised, but she didn't want to inconvenience this girl she had just met. She spaced out for a bit, shifting her gaze around, until she realised introducing herself would be a good next step if she wanted to make something of this encounter. "I'm Aurelia, by the way. She's Lily," she said looking down, "and Cora is there holding Adin." She bowed again slightly and looked at the girl and then the Tropius, still too shy to sustain eye contact for long.

Now, it was true that she hadn't exactly begin her journey in order to make friends... but! Arista, kind-of her aunt, had recently been nagging her to find new friends and, possibly, new more-than-friends. Well, Arista was a tease monster like that! Aurelia wasn't thinking about that exactly... although with her parents relationships and her aunties relationship, she kind of felt pressured into bringing a partner home soon. She knew she liked girls, at least! That was all thanks to Arista, truth be told. She could be a tease at times, but she definitely helped Aurelia discover her sexuality, or rather re-discover it, since now many things she'd thought in the past—how pretty that girl looked, how cool it would be if she could be 'friends' with her, and so on—made a whole bunch of sense when she looked at them with her new-found perspective.

Well, if she took that perspective and brought it here and now... where did it leave her? She didn't exactly want to think about this right now, she didn't want to create false hopes for herself, she needed to focus on her tasks... but, well, friends are important, right? And this girl seemed nice, the least she could do is introduce herself, as she did, and maybe try to talk a bit with her. It'd been a while since she'd talked with someone out of her parents and her aunties. Maybe it'd all just end today and, well, back to work, right? But the hopes simply kept popping up despite Aurelia's own "reluctance", and she felt herself drifting her gaze again to the girl's eyes. Maybe today would be different? It could be. She felt something had driven her here, she didn't know what, or if she was just making things up. She extended her hand, with hopes for the future.

Vivianne hummed uncertainly--that had been quite a fall. However, she decided not to push it further, and instead lowered into a crouch. She took out her Pokedex and aimed it at the mouse Pokemon, which turned out to be a Dedenne. Then she allowed the device to examine the Chingling, and lastly the Heliolisk. Sure, she already knew what the latter Pokemon was, but she didn’t want Cora to fee left out.

“It’s nice to meet you all,” she greeted, sliding the Pokedex back into her pocket. Standing back up, she turned her attention to their trainer. “And you too. My name is Vivianne, and this is Fernie. Say hello, Fernie!”

The Tropius rumbled low in his throat. Whether it was an expression of distaste or a begrudging hello was anyone’s guess.

Aurelia was the first person Vivianne had properly talked to on her Pokemon journey. What a special occasion! “Are you a trainer? I just started my Pokemon journey,” she said.

If the other was a trainer, she wondered whether she was traveling with someone. People frequently traveled in groups, both for company and safety. Vivianne adored the idea of traveling companions. But she hadn’t wanted to ask anyone from Fortree; as much as she liked her friends and the townspeople, she wanted a fresher experience. Someone new. Maybe she could ask Aurelia?

...no, not yet. It was probably too sudden. The last thing she wanted was appear too eager and scare the admittedly cute girl away.

At the sight of the Pokedex, Lily vibrated her orb and made a 'cling, cling' sound. Adin didn't seem to pay it much attention, her eyes eyeing the Tropius as she tried to break free from Cora's firm grasp. Cora simply stared at the device, tilting her head; her grasp on Adin started to ease, and soon Adin felt herself free and managed to get to the ground, but stayed away from trouble... for now.

"It's nice to meet you too." Granted, that probably came off as a bit... stiff? She didn't know what to say after that. But Aurelia had never seen a Tropius so close before and when she realised, her gaze fixed on it for a moment. Fernie looked so... majestic. He rumbled and Aurelia didn't know if it'd be right to pet him, but she decided against just in case. Didn't want to be getting to comfy right off the bat, might come off as rude, right? Either way, when Vivianne asked her if she was a trainer, she turned her attention back to her. "I also just started, a month ago!" she flailed her arms around, excited. "And I'm... well, I don't know exactly, I'm figuring that out, but I do train Pokemon so I guess I am a trainer too?" she said, unsure if she wanted or if it was warranted for her to share so much. She'd never got the hang of 'chit chat' as they called it, but it seemed to go well so far.

She turned her attention to the Hoenn river map. "And oh, do you like maps? I love them! I actually made one for Hoenn." She fished her Hoenn map out of her backpocket and unfolded it considerably, it was a hand-drawn map of Slateport City with many different colours laying around, some adorably-drawn Pokemon around places where they were to appear, some notes and scribbles here and there, kind of a mess in a way. Maybe this was over-sharing, after all.

Aurelia had a lot of energy! How much was from nervousness, Vivianne couldn't say, but the other seemed like a naturally enthusiastic person. Her mouth tilted into an amused smile. "I'd say you count as a trainer. Probably more of one than me, right now. You have a lovely team of Pokemon already."

While Vivianne found maps interesting, it was more of a passing curiosity. However, she did enjoy seeing anyone gush over their hobbies. Nothing was better than seeing someone happy. Perhaps that view was what led Vivianne to typically take a more passive role in conversations. She had always preferred to listen rather than talk about her own interests in detail. Or much private stuff in general, really. She leaned in to look closer at the map Aurelia made. There was clearly talent and heart put into it. Sure it may not be the neatest-looking map, but it had character. "You made this? It's amazing! Your drawings of the Pokemon are adorable. I don't think I've seen many of them before."

She glanced over her shoulder at the Tropius. "Fernie, why don't you take a look? He really likes maps too. I think he used to fly to a lot of places when he was younger, or maybe he used to have a trainer who did," she explained, stepping back a little. Fernie hesitated and glanced toward Aurelia's Pokemon, as if he didn't want to let them out of his sight. At further encouragement from Vivianne, however, he eventually walked forward.

The Tropius lowered his head to peer at the map. Though the leaves on his back were a little ragged, and age spots darkened the fruit on his neck, he still had a sharp mind. His gaze roved over the paper, and he even tilted his head to the side once when he was looking particularly closely at a hill.

Quite bashful, Aurelia's face was adorned by a very slight blush because of all the praise she was getting. She'd gone off a tangent that she barely acknowledge where she was and what she was doing. Then, she noticed Vivianne's smile, a big radiant grin, and instinctively looked away and back at the map. "Ah, thank you, thank you so much," she managed to say. She made a mental note to add a drawing of Vivianne and her Tropius near the Oceanic Museum.

She locked her gaze now on Fernie, Vivianne had invited the Tropius to look at her map; apparently, he liked maps. Fernie seemed reluctanct but ultimately ceded. Aurelia watched as he got closer, his body tense and his fruit littered with dark spots, his leaves ragged and old, yet his eyes looked... defiant, or rather... incisive? The word escaped Aurelia's mind, but it was something like that for sure.

As the Tropius fixed his sight on the map, Aurelia tensed a bit, nervous, probably because two strangers she had just met were watching her map so intently. Her hands started to visibly tremble because of this. Since her two hands were busy holding the map, there was no way she would be able to do what she usually did when she was nervous: pat Lily. As if sensing this need, Lily hopped on top of Cora and then from there on top of Aurelia's head, rubbing her head slightly. "Mhm." Fernie seemed to inch closer to look at a particular hill in the map, and at this time Aurelia shifted her gaze back to the girl and smiled, a faint but genuine smile.

Adin was running amok between Aurelia's legs, apparently having some midless fun, but Aurelia's mind didn't register it. Cora sighed and let her be as he shifted closer to Aurelia. Cora even moved her hand an inch closer to help and straighten the map. "Lisk, lisk... lisk." Maybe trying to reassure Aurelia, or trying to talk to Fernie, the Cora looked at Aurelia and then at the Tropius.

Noticing Aurelia’s hands begin to tremble, Vivianne started to raise her own hand. After a moment’s thought she stopped herself from reaching out. Physical comfort was second nature to her, but everyone she knew in Fortree City was aware of that. She probably shouldn’t breach a stranger’s personal space, and perhaps she had made a mistake in letting Fernie get that close, too. She bit her lip, unsure what to do.

But then the Chingling jumped onto Aurelia’s head, and the girl seemed to calm down, if the little smile was any indication. Vivianne let out a quiet breath of relief.

Fernie glanced at Cora. Compared to the other two Pokemon, he was more willing to converse with her, perhaps because she seemed the most responsible. ”Tro, tro. Tropi,” he responded in his deep voice. He was done with looking over the map for now, so he returned to Vivianne’s side, where she patted his neck.

“How do you make your maps?” Vivianne questioned. “Do you base them off existing ones? Or do you write down everything you see? However you do it, I bet you’d be handy to have around for navigating.” She knew Fortree City by heart, and she knew generally what Hoenn’s land looked like, but she had little experience using a proper map. That would have to be a skill she quickled learned now that she was on her own.

Aurelia—more at ease now that Lily took her place atop her head—watched as the two older Pokemon, Fernie and Cora, exchanged words. She loved to see Cora interacting with other Pokemon, as she tended to be more closed-off compared with Lily and Adin. Frankly, Adin was a handful, and Lily was cheerful, so both of them readily interacted with anyone, albeit in... different ways. But Cora, well, she was reserved.

Eventually, the Tropius shifted back to his place near Vivianne, and Aurelia noticed she patted him on the neck. Their bond must be great, since he's the only Pokemon she has out, thought Aurelia. She folded the map again, slowly, and stuffed it into her backpocket again, as Vivianna asked her some questions. She placed the palms of her hands together for a moment... "Well... it depends!" And then her two hands separated, palms open, her hands usually moved unconsciously when she spoke. "If I haven't ever been to a place before—like today—I base it off books, maps... that I can find at the library or at home; then I cross-check on the actual place if I can, right? And add stuff, fix mistakes, that stuff. It's pretty interactive, in a way! And well... I try my best." her voice sounded chipper and excited, and she sported a sheepish smile.

Meanwhile, Dedenne had climbed from Aurelia's leg all the way to the top of her Pokeball belt, which made for a rather funny sight, with two Pokemon now atop Aurelia. Now that her mind stopped racing for a moment, she realised that Vivianne's accent... well, she wasn't a linguistic expert at all, but it was clear that it was totally different from what she'd heard before. And she hadn't really talked with anyone from Hoenn to know if that was a Hoenn accent... even so, accents can vary wildly even across the same region, her mother had told her. Either ways, she had no idea, so... before Vivianne could say anything else, she just blurted out: "Ahm... are you from Hoenn?" In retrospective, she probably should have introduced her region first, though, understandably, explaining that she'd lived in Sinnoh and then had moved to Kalos was a bit troublesome, and she never knew if she wanted to skip that alltogether and just introduce herself as a Sinnohan or a Kalosian... as she was both?

Vivianne nodded along to Aurelia’s explanations. As if the excitement over maps were her own, delight danced in her chest. This was why she enjoyed socializing so much--there was nothing better than sharing joys! She didn’t quite understand everything the other was saying, true, but she didn’t feel the need to.

Her han quickly moved up to cover her growing grin. Two of Aurelia’s Pokemon were climbing on her like a jungle gym, yet the trainer herself didn’t react. Was this a normal occurrence? It must be, considering how easily she adjusted to their shifting weights.

“I am from Hoenn. I live in Fortree City. If you ever go there, you simply must spend a night! The Volbeat’s tails light up when it’s dark, and they make really pretty patterns in the air. Sometimes they even fly into your house.” People from other places often didn’t like the idea of Bug-types soaring into their houses, but she couldn’t understand why. Watching them buzz around and brighten rooms was soothing. “Oh, but be careful of Kecleon. They can blend into their environments, and they have a bad habit of sitting in the most inconvenient places. Fernie tripped over one sitting in front of a Poke Mart last week.”

Fernie shot her a displeased look; he didn’t like his sillier moments being retold.

Immune to his glare, Vivianne continued. “Where are you from?”

Aurelia's eyes couldn't help but be drawn to the other girl's growing grin, that she quickly covered with her hand. Aurelia took this as a sign that she was having fun, at the very least, and it did wonders for her morale, she could barely stop smiling now. She was off to a great start, after all! Oh, Arista would be so proud. She'd probably tell her as soon as she could, maybe ask for some guidance, if needed... although Aurelia kind of had an idea of what she'd tell her already, the two knew each other pretty well already, yet, it's always better to hear encouraging words from her.

As Lily very lightly and gingerly hopped atop Aurelia's head, Vivianne answered. Aurelia only now realised Adin was also on top of her, and instinctively caressed the rat Pokemon's back. "Oooh," she marvelled at what Vivanne was telling her, although she had no idea what a Kecleon was, and only remembered seeing a Volbeat once in one of her books, but they seemed fun! And also dangerous! She made a mental note to check Fortree City out in her map, and maybe make some drawings of Vivianne on it... well, hopefully they'd get to know each other more and not just meet and forget each other now, but, maybe she was just beeing too naive or hopeful...

She wanted to ask some things about Volbeats and Kecleons and the city, but before she could make up her mind, Vivianne asked her a question. "Ah, I'm... uhm, from Snowpoint City, in Sinnoh," she said, and then mimicked a voice that could be from a reporter or an actress, "you know, 'the wintry city of glittering ice', and all that, well, it's always full of snow!" She paused for a bit. "And I loved it, I lived there as a kid, it was sooo calm, but then we moved to Lumiose City in Kalos, and it was toootally different, it's shaped like a maze-ring and it's got lots of very very high buildings, I love it all the same, though," she giggled, "so you could say I'm both a Kalosian and a Sinnohan, in a way... ah! this is the first time I've been in Hoenn, though!"

A few seconds passed, and she did not get a better idea than to ask: "Is this your first time too?" When she realised that, of course, how could it be, since she was from Hoenn, her cheeks turned a slight pink from embarrassment as she corrected, "I-I mean, in Slateport." She looked at her in the eyes, not wanting to shy away even with her slight blunder.

From what Vivianne remembered, and confirmed by Aurelia’s descriptions, Sinnoh was a far colder place than Hoenn. In Fortree City snow was almost unheard of. The eastern islands supposedly got a little more, but even then, it must be nothing compared to the blankets of sparkling white snow she’d seen on television. How hard was it to make a snowman? Was ice skating very different from rollerblading? Not that she had experience with the latter; Fortree City was all bridges and soil.

Then the other mentioned Kalos. She knew less about Kalos, other than they had delicious treats--she’d been lucky enough to try imported pecha berry macarons when she was younger. Shaped like a maze-ring? She tried to imagine what that looked like, and after a few tries, she was sure the wonky cityscapes she was thinking of couldn’t be right.

“It is,” she confirmed. “I’ve never had reason to come here before. Now that I am, I want to look around the city after this exhibit; I can’t leave before seeing the famous beaches where some of my favorite movies take place!” She was a sucker for romance movies. Friday nights were her dedicated movie time, and sometimes she’d invite Winona or other friends over.

She turned back to the wall. The old map that hung there, while well outdated, resembled the modern Hoenn greatly. “Every few months I went to Lilycove City for shopping. I’ve been to Mauville City a couple times. Other than that, Hoenn is just as fresh to me as it is to you.”

Out of the corner of her eye she noticed a couple people trying to peer around the two trainers and their Pokemon to see the displays. She hadn’t realized how long they’d been standing there in the way; time passed quickly when talking to Aurelia. “We should probably get going. It was great talking to you! Maybe I’ll see you around?”

Movies, huh? Aurelia had never been too keen on watching movies, for some reason. Only recently did her aunties rope her into watching movies once in a while... but places from movies? Vivianne seemed really invested... granted, Aurelia is as invested with the places on her books, so maybe she could take a liking to movies? But, most importantly... Vivianne had not travelled much in Hoenn either.

"Hmm, I see!" Aurelia nodded, Lily and Adin following in tune with nods of their own. Aurelia did faintly remember a Mauville City... probably to the west of Slateport. Lilycove City, on the other hand, she vividly remembered it, since it was the city that stood at the end of the Hoenn mainland, to the northeast... past that, there were only islands, the last of them, down at the south, housed the Pokemon League. She also found it peculiar that such a big city seemed to have no official gym.

When Vivianne mentioned that maybe they should leave... she realised they'd been talking basically on top of the map for... how long!? Well, it was a fun conversation, and she'd grown fond of Vivianne so far, but it seemed like she had to go. "Ah, sure. I'll, uhm, keep looking around the maps, see you!" She wanted to tell her to exchange contacts or something, but she never found the courage, and only waved as Vivianne walked away from her. She'd regret it later, Hoenn was big, and her new-found friendship was as good as dead if she didn't even hold the courage to ask for contact information. What a let-down, after all. If only...

As Vivianne walked away and to the stairs, Aurelia pretended to engross herself on the maps, though honestly, she was only half there. Adin and Lily kept clinging onto her for support, and even Cora patted her on the back, sensing her trainer's gloominess. "Well, so much for that, huh... let's try and have fun anyways." she muttered to her Pokemon. She'd gotten her hopes up for... nothing, apparently.

Upon exiting the museum, Vivianne spotted a flash of orange out of the corner of her eye. The fiery feathers belonged to a trainer’s Torchic, who was trying to keep balance on its tall trainer’s head, and then had to be saved when it slipped off. The scene reminded her a bit of Aurelia. A wave of uncertainty made her stop.

Fernie tilted his head in question.

“...it’s nothing,” she reassured him. How could she explain that she felt like she was walking away from an important person, without sounding silly? She was just being sentimental over one of the first people she’d met on her journey. While her Pokemon didn’t seem convinced, he allowed her to return him to his Poke Ball, since the long lines going in and out of the museum crowded the area.

Vivianne spent a couple hours roaming the market. Despite the tempting array of goods, she withheld from buying much; she had plenty in her bag for her journey. Later she went down to the beaches and spent the sunset walking along the shore. She stopped frequently to watch Wailmer bob among the waves, and she picked up a few broken seashells. There were plenty of perfectly intact shells she could have chosen, but she’d always been drawn to the unwanted trinkets. They deserved just as much love.

Soon the breeze blowing off the ocean grew too chilly, so she returned to the main city. While the bed she’d rented at the Pokemon Center bunks was tempting, she had too much energy to think of sleeping yet. So she decided to grab some tea at a cafe. The one closest to the Pokemon Center was packed. Once she had her Cheri berry tea, she saw a couple leaving a table in the corner, and she hurried to reach it before anyone else took the spot.

She took the two-person table and set her cup down. While she waited for her drink to cool, she pulled out a neatly folded paper and pencil. Resting one elbow on the table, she checked over her supplies list for the umpteenth time. It was hard to know what to expect once you were in the wild, after all. What if she came across people or Pokemon who needed help? Extra healing items was always a good idea...

After thoroughly inspecting each map, Aurelia finally moved on to the third and last floor: miscellanea. Anything and everything could be spotted here: from broken old rods to rare unknown artifacts. Behind glass panes, the myriad of objects observed, still, as people milled about. If something caught her eye, Aurelia dutily stopped, wrote something about it, or simply observed it for a while. More often than not, the artifacts she most looked at were old tomes and paintings. There were many old-style painting lining the walls, and she wondered if she would be able to draw something like that, it seemed to take lots of technique, precision, inspiration. At the center of the room there was a huge, incomplete, wood vessel. Frayed ends lined the wood, and the sails were all ragged. An indistinct emblem was imprinted on both, but not even the description on the ground was of any use. Eventually, Aurelia and her Pokemon in tow slowly left the Museum. The memory of having talked with Vivianne still intact would follow her all day, like a whirring inside her that wouldn't let go, or a permanent rattle that reminded her of what she had done... and what she had not done.

The four of them headed, next, to the shore, where they walked under the receding sun, that was already making its way down to the west and tinted the ocean with its glint. After a while, and since the air was chilly and a little bit unpleasant, they checked the market, bought a few souvenirs and a book, and promptly decided to call it a day. Aurelia'd wanted to go check out the nearby forests, but they were far out in the outskirts of the city, and she had neither the time nor the energy right now. Her Pokemon also looked pretty tired, and Adin and Lily clinged to her like there was no tomorrow. Even Cora had stopped to rest for a moment, motioning all of them to stop... though maybe it was just because she'd watched how tired the other two were, and the toll it was taking on all four of them.

Finally, they reached the Pokemon Center. They'd come in as early as the ferry had got them to Slateport and asked the Nurse if they could stay the night, to which she mercifully agreed. She'd left her sleeping bag in here, but it wasn't yet time to sleep! Aurelia did sleep early, buuut it was time for dinner!! And Aurelia loved dinner. Well, at least, she'd started to fully enjoy dinner when she met her aunties, who managed a café and knew aaaall sorts of recipes! To Aurelia, they were amazing, and ever since she'd seen what they did and how they cooked and baked, she'd wanted to get better at it. Now that she was travelling far and away, a little yarn-ball inside herself was unraveling: she wanted to cook and bake and make amazing dishes, and right now, she wanted to learn exotic recipes to impress them and to make them proud. With that aim in mind, she ambled into the first café her eyes stumbled upon. It was one near the Pokemon Center. It was full of people, and she turned away from it for a moment, as if looking for another one that wasn't as packed, but to no avail: Cora, in a rare moment of sudden assertiveness, grabbed Aurelia by her shirt and pointed at the café. At first, Aurelia's gaze flickered all over, and she tore her gaze away from the café and to Cora, a puzzled look in her face. But Cora still pointed. And at that moment, she saw her. And Cora and Aurelia shared a look, they were both smiling, lightly, airily. Cora was so relieved. It was Vivianne. There was no Fernie, but that was definitely her.

Well, Aurelia would be lying if she said she'd immediately gone and reached for Vivianne. But, honestly, her doubts only lasted about five seconds before she told herself that she wasn't going to be a coward this time, and that she'd go and talk to her like any sane person would, or like a person a little bit desperate to make friends would. It felt like Arista's hand was guiding her to it, or maybe it wasn't Arista's, but it felt like it. Anyways, before she knew it, all was a bit of a daze and she found herself entering the café, not heading towards the counter. Right, she found herself right in front of Vivianne. Lily chimed a happy tune. Adin was probably roaming around the café doing who-knows-what, and Cora was silently walking past the people, probably searching for the Dedenne but still keeping an eye on her dear Trainer. She would have liked to be there, but she knew that Lily, Aurelia's first Pokemon, was enough of a moral support, or so she thought.

She gave a shaky, tentative wave at Vivianne. "Um, welc-- I mean, hello! Ah... how's the, uh... coffee, Vivianne?" Yep. No better way to start a conversation, Aurelia-style! And that was definitely not coffee. But it's a café, come on! That means coffee in, like, seven languages! But she smiled, genuinely, goofily; and maybe that was enough. Yes, maybe that was enough.

In between sips of her drink, Vivianne crossed off items, wrote in new ones, or rewrote ones she previously crossed out. She knew she needed to have plenty of essentials, but she also wanted to keep plenty of room for other things. Such as the seashells she found earlier. She could do so many things with them! Crafts, jewelry, gifts. She could even just leave them in a different place from where she found them--within reason, of course. Then the seashells would be able to see a different part of the world, like she was.

A familiar chime made her look up. There stood Aurelia. Excitement fluttered in her chest, and it took her a moment to realize that the other had called her drink “coffee.” Which it certainly wasn’t. Somehow that silly mix-up made Vivianne smile wider. She set down her pencil.

“Aurelia! Have a seat, have a seat,” she insisted, gesturing to the empty chair across from her.

“This is actually Cheri berry tea. It has an intense flavor, with heavy spice notes, so it’s too spicy for some people. But I like strong flavors.” Half of the tea was gone by now, and true to her word, she hadn’t used any sugar or creamer to dilute it. “Would you like anything? My treat. Feel free to get whatever you want; we should celebrate the beginning of our journeys!"

The mention of journeys made her realize that she may have to part with Aurelia again, after this. That sowed a little seed of sadness, which she squashed down. There was no sense in wallowing when she could be enjoying the time she had with her.

Aurelia looked at Vivianne, who was smiling widely; in turned, she couldn't help but smile, too. "Ah, sure!" She said, and sat down on the chair that was in front of Vivianne. She plopped down, tired as she was, and gently lifted Lily down from her shoulder and onto her lap. The Chingling chirped happily and nuzzled onto Aurelia's belly. Aurelia giggled happily, then turned her attention back to Vivianne.

So, that was not coffee at all, duh! Best to just ignore her dumb blunder. "Oh, spicy hmm, are you sure?" Cheri Berry was most commonly found in Hoenn and Sinnoh, but she didn't remember ever having it there, and now that she was in Kalos, it didn't seem like a common drink there. But, she wanted to eat! She was planning to ask Vivianne to go with her on their journey, so she'd pay her back later! I mean... if she accepted... and now she was nervous, of course! "Uhm, then I'll just have water and... maybe you wanna share some tonkatsu?" she said after looking at the menu that lay in the table, then added, "Since I'm staaaaarving! A full stomach always makes a better tomorrow!" she said, mimicking what Arista told her frequently, and then leaned back on her chair, stretching her arms.

At that moment, Cora came back and stood right beside Aurelia; she was carrying Dedenne in her hands, who tried to squirm out of them, to no avail. Aurelia turned to look at her and put her hand on her shoulder, the other was caressing Lily's head.

Aurelia’s Pokemon adored their trainer; watching them interact was heartwarming. Vivianne would love to bring Fernie out, too, but his wide, nearly seven foot tall body was simply too big for the cafe. She didn’t want his wings to accidentally poke anyone. It would be annoying for the people trying to pass through, and he’d get huffy.

“Tonkatsu sounds great. I’ll go order it, so I’ll be right back.” She pushed back her chair and stood. After weaving her way through customers both standing and sitting, she found the line for ordering. Normally she’d people watch while waiting--but her mind kept going back to Aurelia. A very silly, paranoid part of her brain worried Auralia wouldn’t be there when she got back. But why would she leave? she reminded herself. Aurelia wouldn’t do that. Vivianne was just so excited to chat with her that

Despite the long line, the workers were efficient, and soon she was at the counter. She told her order and handed over the correct amount of money. A few minutes more and then she received the plate of tonkatsu. After giving the workers a hearty thanks, which she wasn’t sure they heard over the din, she made her way back to her table.

“Got it!” She set the plate onto the table. Though she hadn’t planned on eating here before, the smell of the tonkatsu was making her hungry. She handed Aurelia a fork--since tourists were common in Slateport, many restaurants offered forks instead of chopsticks. “You can have the first bite. Let me know how it tastes,” she said, toying with her own fork between her fingers.

Vivianne seemed really intent on picking up the food herself, so Aurelia didn't say anything but a hearty "Yay!" for the tonkatsu, because, finally, fooood! She looked at the notebook placed on the table and got curious about it for a moment, but promptly forgot: her blue eyes couldn't help but follow Vivianne, who ordered with ease and, within a few minutes, was back with the tonkatsu. In those few minutes, Aurelia just thought of how lucky she was to have met Vivianne again after they had departed for what had seemed to be forever. Yes, maybe she was being over-dramatic, but with all the books she read, she couldn't help but! And... wasn't it somewhat fate that they'd met again? Like, what were the chances? Those coincidences plagued Aurelia's world, she always doubted—maybe I'm making things up, maybe I'm creating the pattern myself, maybe I'm delusional—but they were there and everytime something weird happened, the first thing she did was link it to that chain of 'coincidences'...

"Ooooh," the tonkatsu looked, frankly, amazing, and she couldn't wait to start eating. She was reminded of the times when she'd eat tonkatsu as a child in Sinnoh, the one they made in Sinnoh, or at least in Snowpoint, was different, but the essence was the same. "Then let's dig in!" she said, but before she had the first bite, Lily jumped up in a rare moment forwardness, and munched one of the pieces whole. "Whaaaa, Lily! You shouldn't do that, I didn't raise you like that!" She exclaimed with a tone that made it clear she was mock-offended, she was practically laughing. "Tsk, tsk, tsk," she tutted, exaggeratedly and with a knowing smile on her face, "should have just asked me... you know I can't deny you, you baby chime," she said, and then fed another piece to Lily. "Seems like it tastes good, if we go by Lily's standard... but sorry about that, Vivianne, seems like all that walking took a toll on her... even though she just basically hung onto me, but well... oh! where's Fernie?!" She asked, genuinely surprised. Of course, had she thought that through for a moment, she'd have realised that Fernie was too big to reasonably enter into the café... but you couldn't reasonably ask that from someone who was accustomed to be with her Pokemon everywhere and anywhere, now could you?

Vivianne laughed at Lily’s antics; she wished she took a picture! The other trainer and her Pokemon were so lively, it was easy to get caught up in the goofy, lighthearted atmosphere.

“It’s fine. We should have been faster if we really wanted that first bite, huh, Lily?” Happy moments like these were worth more than a lost bite of food. She placed a finger on the Poke Ball hanging from her necklace. “Fernie’s in here. I think it’s crowded enough without him taking up the whole corner. Besides, with all the new stuff he’s seen today, I’m sure he appreciates the break.”

Ready to dig in to their meal, she scooted her chair closer to the table. Her knee bumped against Aurelia’s, and she opened her mouth to apologize--

--but Aurelia wasn’t there anymore.

Stars rushed past in the clear night sky. The sound of rushing wind filled her ears, and when her view flicked downward, she spotted tiny pricks of light brightening the coastline. Was that...Slateport City? From this high up, the major city looked no bigger than Adin. However, it was difficult to focus on the sights for long. Fear pounded in her chest, from what she did not know. But she had to get away get away something is wrong get away.

A dull throbbing in the back of her head increased into an all-consuming migraine. Her vision frequently went dark or titled violently, as if trying to shake off the pain. She had the sense she moved impossibly faster. Yet the ground was coming closer. Occasionally there would be a desperate surge upward, to return to the sky, which only led to exhaustion. Eventually the attempts stopped. Beside the dark sea and a biking road, a massive decrepit building rushed up to meet her.

Before she struck the unforgiving concrete, the images left, and the warm lighting of the cafe returning briefly disoriented her. Vivianne dropped her fork. It landed on the plate with a jarring clink that made her flinch. What...what was that? Her heart thudded hard against her ribcage, and she slowly placed a hand on her chest. A hallucination, maybe? She couldn’t shake the residual negative emotions from her mind.

...how long had she been sitting there in silence? Oh dear. Aurelia was surely starting to worry about her. She finally looked up at the other to see her expression.

Location: Café near a Pokemon Center, Slateport City, Hoenn Region
Time: Evening.
Wearing: knee-length blue jean shorts, red and white striped shirt, blue socks, blue sneakers, orange fox-ear clip-ons, orange backpack, Pokeball belt.
Items: Backpack (a map, a travelogue, a knife, some clothes, some books, a compass, water, plant seeds, her trusty trowel, her own map for annotations and cartography, her notebook for writing, dancing streamers and ribbons... and many other things surely needed for a trip like this).

Lily chiimed and chirped at the mention of her name, flapping and moving her red-and-white striped rope around, and, in a bold move, tried to steal another piece quickly. But! Aurelia wouldn't have that! Lily was still a baby and she wanted to feed her... I mean, it was fun! She snatched the tonkatsu piece right under Lily's nose, but gave it to her as quickly as she snatched it away, earning another happy chirp from Lily, who liked playing around but she loved being pampered like no other. Then both Aurelia and Lily turned her attention back to Vivianne as she tapped a finger to her pokeball necklace, where, it seemed, Fernie's pokeball hung. Aurelia's mouth made and 'oooh' shape as she finally realised why Fernie was not out there with them... it made total sense. Of course it did! But, heck, she still wanted for everyone to be out. Maybe later...

Aurelia felt her knee being touched by Vivianne's, and felt a bit embarrassed at the awkward contact, but when she looked up--there was only a sea of stars there! Aurelia closed her eyes, trying to dispel whatever this was. But the starry darkness continued on, endless. In motion. Yes, Aurelia realised she was falling. There were even more light below her, at a distance far away but not enough that she couldn't recognise it: it looked like a city. She pinched her cheek, closed her eyes, even slapped herself. When she couldn't get out, she started to call out for Lily, for Cora, even for Adin... she looked around and she fell but they weren't there... she just wanted to hug them. Tears started to roll down her face as she hugged herself, trembling, heart beating faster and faster as the end approached. She didn't want to end. She... she still wanted to be with them... she still wanted to call her parents... her aunts... she still wanted to see Vivianne and Fernie... she needed to ask her out to journey together... she still needed to get to know everyone more... she still needed... Vivianne... Lily... Cora... everyone... I'm sorry. The tears wouldn't stop and she hiccuped and sobbed and... she curled herself up in a ball as she fell the last kilometers of air and struck the ground.

When she came to her senses, she was... purportedly, back at the café... or was she? This time, she didn't pinch her cheek nor close her eyes because she was looking down at Lily, who seemed to be still about to eat the piece of tonkatsu she'd give her before... dying... or not-dying, apparently. She kissed Lily's forehead with care, and then looked up, to her side, then to the front: everyone was there, Cora holding Adin, and Vivianne with Fernie's ball. Was it a miracle? When she looked at Vivianne, she realised her eyes were full of tears... she didn't know if she had brought them over from her... dream or whatever that was or if she had just cried. She tried to speak, between sobs. "I--I--think I died, o-or it see--med..." she could barely tie two words together, but she didn't want to not say anything. Did Vivianne experience anything or was it just her? Did anyone else inside experience anything? Her curious side longed for these questions but, right now, she couldn't focus at all. Worried about Vivianne, in any case, she managed to muster, "A-all okay?" and tried to smile, a cracked smile... but all was alright now and she tried to stop the tears and the sobs but it was hard and she was doing her best. But she was still trembling and she tried to reach with her hand but she didn't know what to do with it and it was obvious she was trembling and she didn't know what to do so she just held it up in the table, hoping the trembling would stop.

Aurelia’s clear distress pierced straight into Vivianne’s own heart. Shaving her own lingering despair into a metaphorical box, she locked the feelings away. This was a skill she’d developed for years--ignoring her own emotional state so she could tend to that of someone else’s. It was by no means foolproof. Since she never allowed herself to revel in or understand the things she was hiding away, she wouldn’t know what to do with them whenever they inevitably exploded outward. Vivianne was aware of that. But she chose to ignore it. When someone wonderful like Aurelia needed her, that was all that mattered.

She reached forward and gently grasped the other girl’s hand. “Oh, Aurelia. It was really scary, wasn’t it? But we’re here where it’s safe, I promise. Cry as much as you need to,” she reassured, rubbing her thumb across Aurelia’s fingers. It was easy to assume what had scared the other so.

Something lightly tapped against her chest. It was the poke ball on her necklace--it was restlessly shifting, which meant Fernie must have noticed something was wrong. She placed her free hand over it and hoped he would understand to calm down.

“I saw it too. It was like I was seeing through someone else’s--or something’s?--eyes, and they were very frightened. I’ve never felt such...intense fear.” She suppressed a shudder. As strange as the situation was, though, she was glad she wasn't the only one to experience it. That meant she wasn't crazy. So unless in the extremely unlikely event they'd been through a mass hallucination, that sight hadn't come from their own minds.

Aurelia felt Vivianne's soothing touch as she tried to calm down her sobbing. She stopped trying to speak and simply listened to Vivianne, trying to focus on every word and inhaling and exhaling as calmly as she could. Cora noticed her crying and her exhasperation and she hugged her. Adin, who was finally let free of Cora's grasp, mimicked Cora and hugged Aurelia on the neck, while Chingling clambered up to Aurelia's shoulder, pecked her on the cheek repeatedly, and then nestled on her head were she caressed her hair softly.

Aurelia nodded at Vivianne's explanation. She didn't know what had happened, but it definitely couldn't have been her, since she was here right now, and if Vivianne had seen it too... then what could it be? It had been deeply unsettling... disturbing. Aurelia hoped no one else had to go through that. She squeezed Vivianne's hand softly and mustered a soft "Thank you".

When her sobbings had stopped, Adin had the amazing idea of slowly running to Aurelia's cheeks and playing with them, which had Cora almost fish her out of there, if it wasn't for Aurelia, who stopped her and chuckled. "It's okay, Cora. We're okay... we... we should relax a little," she managed to say. She didn't let go of Vivianne's hand... she hoped it was alright, but for now it seemed like an anchor for her. "I'm glad you're okay, Vivianne... it was just... kind of unsettling to me, I thought..." she stopped her train of thought, "I'm just glad we're okay... we should always remember to be grateful, right?" she smiled, weakly, but it was a sincere smile. Her eyes were puffy and teary, but she was alright, well, as alright as she could be after that; but she remembered everyone who was here with her, supporting her, and everyone who supported her from miles away... she'd have to tell them, and she was sure they'd have her back, and she was grateful and she never wanted to take them for granted.

Vivianne nodded. “You’re right. We have each other, and our pokemon.” A few curious customers around them had been subtly peeking over at them, likely wondering what could have happened to cause Aurelia’s tears, but now that the situation had calmed they returned to their meals. Regardless, Vivianne didn’t care what they thought.

With their hands still connected, she became a little too aware of how warm and soft Aurelia’s fingers were. Then she immediately scolded herself: don’t be having such thoughts when she’s seeking comfort, Vivianne! She didn’t pull away, since the action seemed to be helping the other, but she also didn’t look directly at their hands. Like whatever connection they were building would shatter if she did. That feeling made her realize she didn’t want to leave her again. It was a ridiculous notion, just as ridiculous as that vision, and maybe that was a sign?

Biting her lip, she briefly warred with herself. They both had a busy day and were emotionally drained. Asking anything of her now would be unfair. Plus Aurelia was a fun girl, one who would surely make many friends. Joining with a person she met on the first day of her journey...that did sound hasty.

Vivianne didn’t do crazy. At least, not by herself. And wasn’t that the point? She would have someone to be silly with, and if later on they decided they didn’t want to travel together, they could part ways then. Not that she could see that happening.

“Aurelia,” she abruptly said, and although a whisper of uncertainty made her hesitate, she had already started. May as well barrel through. In hindsight, Vivianne really was more wired than she thought, for her reservations to slip like this. “You don’t have to answer now, and...obviously we’ll probably need to figure out the whole vision thing? Because it’s really weird? But regardless of that, I...would like to travel together. Again, no pressure, because you should do what’s best for you! I know there are a lot of things to take into account, like what places we want to go to or if we’ll even work well together, so I will be completely okay with whatever your decision is.”

She finally took a breath, and then she mentally prepared herself for a rejection. The lukewarm food had been forgotten. She’d lost her appetite, anyway.

Aurelia nodded, still smiling lightly, trying her best not to sob or cry again. Vivianne's hand kept her close to earth, and she did thought about letting it go, but... she couldn't, it just felt like she had to keep holding it to calm herself down... and she really hoped Vivianne wasn't annoyed by it, she was the one who'd initiated the contact, so it was probably alright, it had been such a nice gesture. Each other? That was great, that Vivianne thought that, that she didn't just leave at seeing Aurelia cry like a mess.

No one ate the food. It felt wrong to touch it now. Aurelia kept on looking at their hands, then at Adin, at Cora, and caressed Lily with her hands, they were all here, safe. Then at Vivianne and Fernie's Pokeball. Everything was normal. Nothing seemed out of place, and she felt like all of them were connected, silently, like an invisible web threaded by the fates. She brought Lily down to her other shoulder, since she wanted to be able to see her. Lily gave her another slight kiss on her cheek. Then, Vivianne spoke.

Aurelia listened carefully, and then was flabbergasted! Vivanne wanted to travel with her? Before the vision, she'd been literally about to ask her. Now that's a coincidence! Aurelia nodded as Vivianne spoke, she didn't seem certain, like she was treading dangerous territory and placed her words carefully and hesitantly. But Aurelia simply nodded until Vivianne finished. And then she smiled brightly. "Yes, I want to!" she squeezed Vivianne's hand for good measure. "No, we would all be more than happy, super duper delighted to travel with you and Fernie, right Lily?" she kissed Lily's forehead and looked at Vivianne again, smiling. Lily made a chirping sound that evoked happiness, everyone knew that had done more to lift Aurelia's mood than anything, as she was already speaking normally again. She'd deliberately ignored the mention of the vision... but with more time, they should tackle it further. Aurelia was scared, yes, but she was also intrigued, and with the days passing, she'd be able to analyse everything with her enthusiasm rather than with her shock.
