Gaige took that moment and decided that he was just going to be him. “So you’re off. Dizzy. Could be the brain, could be your equilibrium. Could be a few reasons. But resting, water and food are what you need. When you’re ready, we can go get something to eat. It might make you feel better, or it could make it worse.” Gaige was rather blunt in his words as he looked at Levi. “Is this okay?” He asked, using his head to gesture to the hand on his side and the fact that he was laying in bed with him.​

It was honestly kind of nice to have someone telling him things straight than trying to talk around it. He spent too many years with kind people who never told him real things. He also met a lot of unkind people who never told him real things. As far as people who used to be his enemy, Gaige was probably the best of them. Honestly, Levi liked him better than a bunch of people who weren’t. He was trying to figure out what to say when Gaige asked the question. He hazarded opening his eyes so that he could see what he meant. The gesture. Oh. “Um.” No? Yes? “Uh, yeah.” It wasn’t what he would ask for, but he also wasn’t going to ask him to move his hand. It was nice to feel someone there. “Well, I’m resting now. And I had water plus I am pretty sure they pumped me with fluids. So food is next. But next not now. Give me… I don’t know how long.” There was no use in lying. He didn’t know.​

Gaige smiled softly as he heard that. His thumb had started absentmindedly moving in circles on Levi’s side as he laid there. This was all new to him. He’d never.. had this kind of connection with anyone until now. Ben was his first crush, his first shot at love. He’d lost it, so he was lost. Now he was trying again. Finding the light he’d lost. He bit his lip and smiled a little bit, eyes twinkling like they did once before. Back when the world hadn’t turned him into what he was now. “That’s okay. You take your time. When you’re ready to eat, we’ll go eat.” He said softly, wanting nothing more than to hold Levi which was weird. He knew he liked him but this might be a bit too fast.​

The fact that Gaige was so understanding was almost making this worse than he was when he thought about how he wanted to stay angry with someone who made his life hell for a good long while. It was making him feel bad for feeling bad. He opened on eye, the other shoved into the mattress and blanket. He looked at this man who was an entirely different person to the one from before. He thought that before too, but now this was different. There was something about his eyes. They felt more… alive. In the silence, he laid there, kind of staring into the eyes of his companion. The concentric circles were calming. Relaxing. He did not smile but he also did not frown. He was entirely relaxed as he lay there with this other man on this bed. Wondering who he was. Not a Rattler. Not a Firefly. Being okay with whatever that answer was.​

Gaige simply laid there, smiling softly. He could see that Levi looked to be relaxing and he kept up the circling thumb on his side. In this moment, Gaige felt more like himself than he had in a long time. He hummed softly as he closed his eyes, enjoying this peaceful moment. He didn’t know what to do or say, so he kept quiet. This might not be where he stays, but for now, it would be a kind of home. A place for them to rest and recuperate. And he was alright if this was not where they’d stay forever. He just.. wanted his light. And he was going to win him over no matter how long it takes. That was his goal.​

After a while, closed his eyes too. In the quiet, it was almost like everything else stopped being. They were two on a bed, and there was nothing else around. He was not sure if he was simply lost in thought or if he fell asleep. For a while Levi did not move. He was happily stuck in a world in between. Finally he opened his eyes again. Lifted his head. It wasn’t so bad. He could probably handle that. “Gaige?” He couldn’t tell if he was asleep. If he was, he’d wait. There was no hurry. ​

Gaige was still awake, well half awake. He was caught in a land between sleep and waking. Dreaming. Thinking of the past and the future. The present and what he’d done. He wasn’t a great guy, not since San Francisco. Leading his best friends brother and others into a trap was one that still haunted him. He groaned softly at his name and opened his eyes a little. “Yeah? How are you feeling?” Gaige asked, though he hadn’t noticed that he’d moved a little closer and his arm was further around Levi, hand on his back. “Are you hungry?”​

Levi did not notice that Gaige was closer. He didn’t even notice the arm around him or the hand against his back. He was still a little groggy from the rest. Even though he called out to Gaige to get his attention, he had already started to drift again, his eyes closing once more. “Hm?” He slowly pulled them open again and looked at Gaige. Mm, right. They should probably get up and not waste away. “Better I think.” He wasn’t sure and probably wouldn’t be until he got up. He was a little afraid to. What if it was bad? What if he couldn’t walk? Maybe he would be trapped there until he died. Some way to go. “Uh, yeah. Are… are you hungry?”​

Gaige looked at Levi, hearing him and smiled. He was glad that he seemed to be doing better. “Good. I’m glad to hear that.” He said with a smile on his face. Gaige heard his words and nodded. “I am. How about we head out of here and find the cafeteria?” He asked as his hand started absentmindedly rubbing Levi’s back gently. He didn’t know what he was doing but it was as if just leaving the Rattlers, and being with someone he liked, he was slowly coming back to who he’d been before. That same happy boy, happy man. Back before the light was gone from his life.​

He was too tired, too close to sleep, too relaxed, or too out of it because of everything his body was trying to heal to think too much into the moment. He had this little smile that was just enough for someone to notice if they were looking. He didn’t. He closed his eyes, which made the smile a little bigger, and pushed his arm out to stretch. In doing so, he rammed it, not terribly forcefully, into Gaige. A little slow on the uptake, he opened his eyes confused about the sudden thing that was impeding him. Gaige. As soon as he realized, his eyes widened more and he pulled his arm back. “Oh, sorry. Guess I’m not a hundred percent yet.” He started to sit himself up which was admittedly easier than it was before but still not great. He wobbled slightly as he finally was able to get into a normal sitting position. “You gonna be my cane again? I think I might need it.”​

Gaige could see that little smile on his face, and then it got a little bigger. A mirrored smile on his own face as he felt the arm ram into him but he didn’t mind. Gaige looked at Levi and smiled, shaking his head. “It’s okay.” He said as he saw those wide eyes. He moved to sit up as well, though he kept a sharp eye on Levi. “Of course I’ll be your cane again.” Gaige replied as he slowly pushed off the bed and stood over by Levi. He held out his arm for the other man to take. “Though I might get us lost. I don’t know where the cafeteria is.” Gaige said with a soft laugh.​

He was almost certain that he felt better now. Again, he probably would not be able to tell until he was up and moving. He looked up at his supposed constant companion, still smiling just a little, and finally attempted to stand up. This involved shamelessly holding onto Gaige’s arm for the support he most definitely needed. It did not take nearly as long as he assumed that it move off the bed and stand. Strangely enough, it was almost like it was easy. Easy with help. He had a feeling that if he were on his own, that would have ended the probability of something that was going to be easy. “If we wander around enough, we’ll probably find your new friend. What was his name? The one who talks too much.” He honestly could not even see him very well in his mind. “Or you’ll make new friends. You apparently can do that. Must be how you stayed alive so long.” This was not an accusation. Instead, it was an observation. When the Rattlers found him, he was immediately attacked and taken in to be a slave. Somehow, Gaige was taken in as one of them. That clearly had to be a special kind of person.​

Gaige did not mind that Levi was holding on to his arm for support. He had caused this and he was going to make it better. "Oh, uh. Landyn? Maybe. I'm not sure. And I wouldn't say I can make new friends, I'm not a big people person shockingly." Gaige admitted as he helped Levi to the door. "I was actually a slave myself though I had kept all the others in line which got me promoted to one of them." Gaige explained as he opened the door for them, and then looked outside. The hall was empty, oh well. He could figure out where the cafeteria was, hopefully.​

“Is it because you keep enslaving them?” This was not a dig, though it kind of was. Levi couldn’t help it. He had a feeling that treating people as nothing more than tools was not about to make you popular with them. Though, he was a little surprised to hear that Gaige was a slave once before he was the one doing that dirty work. “You know, I’m going to be honest. I don’t know if that’s better or worse.” He inflicted on others what was inflicted on him, and though that was understandable, it was also a little despicable. How could he do that knowing what it did to a person? Levi wasn’t sure how he felt about it, though he didn’t move away. He kept on walking with him. They moved out into the empty hall, and for a moment, Gaige felt like this was all a trick. They hadn’t really made it to a magical Firefly island. This was some elaborate rouse. He had no idea what it would be hiding though. Don’t be stupid, Levi. Get it together.​

Gaige winced at the words, and he looked away. "It's because they looked up to me. And it's no better than what I did. It's worse." He agreed as they moved out into the empty hall. He didn't condone his own actions. He didn't let himself feel like he'd done it just to survive and not to cause pain to others because of all he'd gone through. It wasn't their fault and yet Gaige blamed them instead of himself for so long. It was all his fault and he knew it. He'd willingly done it after all. "Hey!" A voice from behind them and Gaige looked back. Adrian was headed from their room to see if he could find Landyn as he'd finally finished his shift and was headed to get food as well. Adrian jogged to catch up and ended up on Levi's other side. "How are you feeling?" Even off duty, Adrian was still a medic.​

The admission was somehow surprising and exactly what he thought he might hear. It was surprising, because this version of Gaige continued to surprise him. He was able to take blame and also cast it upon himself. The more Levi threw attacks at him, the more Gaige proved to have a conscience. How was he supposed to feel about that? Should he feel bad for still wanting to take out his anger and frustrations on him? He did not have time to think this through before they were joined by the medic who checked him over. Adrian. He tried to stand a little more on his own now that he was being scrutinized again. “Fine. Thanks.” He clamped his mouth shut, willing the conversation to end when he remembered that they could probably use his help. “We are, uh… looking for food? Can you maybe point us in the right direction?”​

Gaige didn’t think much more on his past as he looked ahead. He went silent as Adrian joined them. The medic didn’t need anyone to talk for him to anyway. He had noticed that Levi was leaning on Gaige but did he try and stand more on his own? Hm. “You can keep using your cane there. I understand. That sometimes just having someone to help walk is all one needs.” Adrian said before he nodded enthusiastically. “Of course! I was just headed there myself. I’m trying to find my partner before they send him off, again.” Adrian said as he took the lead to head out of the housing and down the walkway to the dome. “The cafeteria is located near the back in the center of the dome.” He explained.​

His cane? What did that mean? Levi didn’t have a cane. He didn’t want to have to depend on something else to be- Oh. He couldn’t help but flick his gaze to the side to see Gaige before looking away like he could hide the fact that he was definitely using him. Someone to help walk was all someone needs? Is that what was going on? Did he… did he need Gaige? He was conflicted. Again. Apparently he was going to live his life inflicted. He tried to be more independent as they followed Adrian. “Send him off?” he asked. Was that like how people were sent before or was this part of the new order of Fireflies?​

Gaige looked away as he bit his lip. Cane? Is that all he was? Just there until Levi could walk on his own? He didn’t know, but he couldn’t help but wonder. Adrian on the other hand was quite content to keep talking. “Yes! They send out groups to the mainland to scout for places with potential Fireflies. Lan’s group is headed for Las Vegas. Which was why I’d asked earlier about Vegas.” Adrian explained as they got to the dome and he opened the door for them. “He can be gone weeks at a time or merely days. Once was almost a month and that was hard. I miss him when he’s gone but they never clear me to go with them. They always need me here.” His voice was sad as he shut the door once they were all in. “So! I spend as much time as I can when he’s back.”​

Scouting parties. To Vegas. How long had it been since he went to Vegas? A long, long time. He wondered what it would be like to go back. Would there still be as many infected there? Would there be anyone left? He was one of the last. He stayed for a long time after everyone else left to make sure that everyone got out. He bit his lip realizing how young he was to be put in that kind of situation. “Do they… think there are people left in Vegas?” That seemed impossible. He was there. Levi was there- or, uh, he guessed that was when he was Seth. Either way, he was there when all of it got out of hand. When everything was too much and everyone left. He was there when there wasn’t anyone else. There wasn’t anything for the Fireflies. Right?​

As Adrian led them into the dome and past the medical wing entrance, he looked at Levi. “Well. They heard of a group of Fireflies there. I’m not sure. I know that they have enough to want to send a party there.” Adrian explained as they slipped through the hall and he opened two big double doors. “So they send scouts? How does one join these parties?” Gaige asked as they walked to the cafeteria doors. “Oh. I’m not sure, you’d have to ask Lan. He knows more about the scouting things than I do I think. I just know when he leaves and hope he returns.” Adrian replied as they stepped into the cafeteria and a first glance, he didn’t see his partner. “I hope they didn’t send him away yet..”​

A group in Vegas. In Vegas? That couldn’t be right. There wasn’t anyone left. He knew it. He was there. He was- Levi’s thoughts of turmoil were cut short with Gaige’s question. Did he want to go? People were in Vegas and Gaige wanted to go? He was going to leave too? Why was that surprising? Why did it feel wrong? It didn’t matter. Gaige could do what he wanted. He was a Firefly too. That little piece of metal around his neck said so. He looked down at his own. Fireflies in Vegas. “So you don’t get to see each other much?” He wasn’t sure why he asked the question. Maybe he was curious how things worked here. Maybe there wasn’t some personal reason. Did that matter? Probably not. He looked around to see if he could find Landyn as well. He couldn’t. Guess they were eating without him then? He pulled himself entirely away, Gaige was potentially wanting to leave anyway, and focused as hard as he could to walk to get his food. It was much easier this time, though he still hurt. He had a feeling that if he ate a good meal, drank water, and probably slept a good number of hours, he would be okay. ​

Gaige wasn’t sure what he wanted, he just knew that he wanted to do something more, but what he did not know. He noticed that Levi pulled himself entirely away and he sighed softly. That wasn’t his intention. Adrian looked at Levi as they headed for the line. “No. We don’t. But when we do get to see each other, we make the most of it. Though I told him to let me know when he was leaving this time but, I fear they sent him off already.” Adrian said softly. “We, actually, we both met in Boston. He was determined to get me to join him in the Fireflies.” Adrian chuckled softly as he waited in line with the other two. Gaige had gone quiet as he stood there.​

Standing in line was stressful. He was not sure why exactly he didn’t like it so much. He felt almost out of place. Weren’t these his people? He should be excited. He wondered if he would have felt less drastically out of place if he did not feel so removed from reality. Being stuck in that Rattler camp for so long felt like it really changed who he was. Maybe that was why he didn’t feel like a Seth or a Levi. “Would they send him off like that? Without giving him time to say goodbye to you?” He remembered plenty of times when people were just gone. They got shipped off to wherever between then and the last time you saw them. Gone. Like it was nothing. You got used to never seeing someone again. Finally it was their turn and he grabbed his food and stepped to the side. He didn’t know where to go.​

Gaige was quiet, taking in the area around him. He had never felt less like a Firefly than he did here. He felt more like a.. stranger to a group he used to part of. He looked at Adrian as he spoke and then at Levi as well. Adrian sighed heavily as he grabbed his tray when it was their turn. "Because they try and send them out as soon as they know of a location, regardless of loved ones." He said with a small sigh. Gaige took some food before Adrian led them to a table nearby.​
