Character Name: Ruka Shibata

Age: 27

Sex:
Male

Affiliation: Daimyo of House Shibata

Physique: Ruka is 5'11", and weighs 168 lb. His hunting habits have given him a sturdy, yet lithe body ideal for things like climbing.

Magic-User?: Yes. Ruka is an Adept Illusionist, and an Apprentice in most other fields.

Equipment-
  • Yumi Longbow
  • Quiver of 40 arrows
  • Studded Leather Cuirass
  • A small book of Money Notes
  • Illustrations of Demons
  • Kanabo
Backstory: The Shibata family has only been around since the reign of the 3rd Emperor, when two generations ago, Ruka's grandfather Hayato Shibata was granted rights to the land the previous Daimyo possessed. Ruka had always reflected on this since his youth, and felt when he was to inherit the land, it would be nothing he could call himself proud of. He grew up in a depressed state, always trying to find some meaning in his life. His only real talent was in archery, but even then he felt it was not enough.

Upon turning 20, the Shibata territories belonged to Ruka. He had land, an army, slaves bound to his whims. His servants grew frustrated and confused with Ruka as he insisted on doing things himself. He spent more time hunting in the valleys and forests than he did governing his territories, allowing the Kimura ninja to freely recruit in his villages. To his Samurai and Advisors, Ruka was considered a coward for this, not punishing the Kimura clan at all for messing with his people. The only thing that keeps them from mutiny is respect for Ruka's skill with the Yumi, and his own good natured treatment of everybody.

In recent years, Ruka and his native village had been visited by various demons. Some chose to remain secretive and went undetected, while others sought to rampage and destroy everything. Ruka regained his respect and reputation by singlehandedly killing the attackers with only his bow atop the roof of his castle. After the rampaging demon's death his castle began to be frequently visited by strange people, peddling magical secrets to him. He has sketched them from memory, and now seeks to find these people, curious of their origins.

Ruka's demeanor is, at first glance, sour and joyless. This is is not the case, as he likes to think himself as being well adjusted. While he has a sense of humor, he doesn't rely on it, almost never the first one to crack wise. His desire to establish a legacy of pride grants him near limitless ambition.

Character Name: Turanaki Acoma

Age: 28

Sex: Male

Affiliation: Shogun of House Acoma

Physique: Turanaki stands just at six feet in height, a giant amongst his family. He weights 190 Lbs, with years of endless training and warfare lending him a strong figure.

Magic-user?: No

Equipment:

  • Ancestral Naginata, imbued with ancient runes and seals hardening its steel, and any wound it inflicts will never heal naturally.
  • Katana
  • Ancestral Shogun armor of House Acoma, rumored to have been worn by the First Emperor himself in battle. It is stronger than any standard armor, and some blades will break against it if struck wrong.
Backstory: Turanaki was born nearly three decades ago, the youngest son of the Head Acoma House. Like all male heirs of the Acoma, Turanaki was born with no name or titles. The moment he was old enough to walk, he was sent to the barracks with his elder brothers, drilled and schooled by the Samurai there. On his tenth birthday, he was brought to his fathers great hall, where a prisoner had been brought. Both the prisoners and Turanaki were armed with a Katana, and ordered to fight to the death. Only when Turanaki killed the prisoner, severing his head from his body was he finally given a name. He was named after the first Shogun of the Acoma, Turanaki the Herald.

Over the years, Turanaki's brothers slowly began to die off, from the numerous wars the Acoma were always fighting, or from internal political struggles. Eventually, only one brother stood between Turanaki and his fathers throne. Both brothers marched together against a Shogun House that had long since resisted the Acoma, with his elder brother leading the army. When his brother allowed their enemies to ambush the army, killing many of their Houses Samurai, Turanaki challenged him for command. He killed his elder brother in the subsequent duel, and took command of the remnants of the Acoma army. He led them in a masterful assault on the keep of the enemy House, butchering every member of the House, displaying their remains for all to see.

Barely a year later, his father fell ill and died. Turanaki ascended to the throne of House Acoma, and has since led them in more conquests than the last three heads of the House combined.

Fernando de Porto
jesuit2.jpg

Age:
37

Sex:

Fernando is a male

Affiliation:
Fernando is a westerner.

Physique:
Fernando is somewhat tall for the time, at 5' 7". Wieght-wise, he's around 143 pounds. This man has some muscle to him, as he's not simply lying around.

Magic-User?:
He does not use magic. That is against the church. However, in a way, he knows somebody with much power, all the way in the sky.

Equipment
  • A strange book of faith written in a language that he can understand.
  • A single shortsword
  • A small sack of gold coins
Backstory:
Fernando's story starts out in a distant land called Portugal. At an early age, he worked and live in a temple to his god. After a while, he became a priest and a Jesuit. He found a new role in his life.

During his time, the land of Portugal was expanding and exploring way off into the vast world. One of those places the Portugese reached was a land called India. Fernando got sent there to spread his faith. He helped to manage a chapel in a portugese settlement in India. The priest converted many to his faith.

Soon, the Portugese discovered a new place called Hoken-Chi. Fernando was interested in going from India to Hoken-Chi. After a while, he packed his bags and took the next tradeship to there.

So far, Fernando has been spreading the faith to this new land. He resides in a Portugese port. There lays a church where the Portugese sailors and converted Hoken-Chi people meet. While he is loyal to the King of Portugal and the Bishop of Rome, he keeps within the rules of the daimyo, as his church and the Portugese port stand on the daimyo's land. Occasionally he goes to the daimyo regarding request from the converts.

Teaching the faith is a little hard, as the people there speak an odd language. He has figured out the words for a few things, such as water and a couple of numbers, but is unable to form any good sentence. He usually relies on converts.
This will work fine. Count yourself accepted.

Character Name: Yua Nanami

Age: 20

Sex: Female

Affiliation: Clan Nanami

Physique
She stands at 5’5, weighing 118lb. Yua is a slim girl, but she is definitely muscled. Having given up in competing in strength her male counterparts, Yua instead trained herself diligently to obtain a light and agile form.

Like her mother, and most citizens of Hoken-Chi, Yua has black hair and round brown eye, with a birthmark under her left. Her features are not extravagant, but they serve her well in her disguises, changing from one face to the next with an artful stroke of the brush.

Magic-User
Adept in her ninpo, knows no other form of magic.

Ninpo: Song of Rain

Equipment
♦ A small fan - the paper part is made out of deceptive metal, can be wielded like a knife.
♦ Long steel needles - Made to be thrown rather than to sew, these can be doused in poison, or medicine if one prefers.
♦ Alloyed threads - part of the sewing kit Yua carries, these can be coupled with her needles to provide a quick surgical alternative.
♦ Simple leather armor beneath her kimono.
♦ Book of songs
♦ Mother's ring

Backstory:
Yua Nanami, better known as the only daughter of Katashi Nanami. The head of the Nanami is known for his brutality. Growing up, Yua was more frightened by her father than loved. Her mother was not a member of the clan, but she was still shinobi. Chiyo came from another band of ninjas, but married Katashi when her clan was falling apart. The Nanami had called it a merger, but it was really a one-sided acquisition—a growing giant to a withered ancient. Their marriage was heartless, but Yua found comfort in her mother’s warm embrace. That is, until she turned thirteen. Chiyo passed, it was suicide.

Angry and convinced it was due to Katashi, Yua grew reckless. She started going out on and more missions, regardless of the danger, loathing to return home. Her father did not care. He moaned about not having a son, and the condemnation of his daughter seemed less important than a scratch on his blade.

Some time later, Katashi was found dead in his bedroom. There were rumors that survivors from Chiyo's clan had plotted it, and others believed it was his daughter who killed him in his sleep. She neither confirmed or denied these rumors, instead leaving them dangling in the air. With her father dead, Yua found her herself in a position where she must take up the clan, though she is still young. Her advisors helped her, those trusted by Katashi. Within the close circle of these high rankers shinobi, they believed she wasn't the killer. Unlike Katashi, Yua does not wish for the Nanami to remain a kithless clan. She intends to build a foundation with new connections for her ninja to stand on.

The news of Katashi's death has not been made public. This has so far gone unnoticed due to him rarely appearing in person, even with the most honoured clients. The esteem of their clan (as well as their stigma for callousness) largely came from him. The clan judged Katashi's death to be a weakness, and therefore do not publicize it.

Character Name: Baltasar de la Reina

Age: 37

Sex: Male

Affiliation: Westerner

Physique:
Baltasar stands at 5'11" and weighs about 171 lbs. Baltasar has a tall and lean stature, with a fairly defined musculature.

Magic-User(?):
Baltasar is not a magic user, for it is considered a sin in his faith. However, Baltasar does believe that witchcraft exists, along with the existence of demons and spirits as well.

Equipment:
  • Spanish Arming Sword
  • Matchlock Hand-pistol
  • Ammunition Pouch (5 shots)
  • Small Gunpowder Horn
  • Old Silver Crucifix
  • Leather Money Purse (50 Spanish Reales)

Backstory:

Baltasar was a ship Captain and served the Crown of Castile; a kingdom residing in the lands known as Spain. This Spanish kingdom waged war upon many opponents, including that of their own kin. Baltasar became a renowned military commander and was soon selected for an exploratory naval expedition into the far east. Seeking to increase his reputation, Baltasar eagerly accepted the invitation and set sail. His ship, The Azure, and the small armada accompanying him were swept away by a sudden storm at sea. After a long struggle against the forces of nature, The Azure emerged triumphantly. However, the ship was badly damaged, and most the fleet was nowhere to be seen. They presumed the majority of the Armada had fallen prey to the storm. Baltasar made for, and laid anchorage off the coast of Hoken-Chi; an island residing within the far reaches of The Orient. Hoken-Chi was not Baltasar's immediate goal, but the opportunity presented itself, and he made landfall along with a company of his men on the shores of the peculiar island.

Baltasar was born to a wealthy merchant family living in Toledo. From there, his parent's occupation forced him to move to the port cities along the Spanish coasts. When he reached adulthood, he employed himself in sailing for the Crown, and eventually started his military career. Baltasar became a tactful strategist and renowned swordsmen. He also became akin to leadership, giving him the chance to rise to the rank of Captain.

"There is no greater honour then to lead such a men."
Character Name: Daimyo Toda Tomotaka, "Commander of a Thousand Spears"
Age: 27
Sex: Male
Affiliation: Clan Toda
Physique: Shorter then most, Tomotaka is about 5'9", weighing in at about 153 lb. Tomotaka is not to slender yet not bulky, falling in the catogory of lean and a fairly muscular, all that is needed for a warrior.
Magic-User?: No
Equipment:
-katana
-wakizashi
Black War Horse-
It is notable that Tomotaka's horse is black, as it is heard him say during a battle where the enemy's general rode on a horse of flame "I don't need a horse made of fire to inspire my men to do deeds greater." It is said that in that same battle, Tomotaka rallied a group of broken ashigura spear-men into reforming and returning to battle, ultimately killing the enemy general on top of his flaming horse.
Courage of Men- A magic fan-of-war that is said to be able to sway the hearts of even the most cowardly of men and instil in their hearts courage and heroism.
Armor of the Toda Clan- Nothing special, in all actuality, though said armour has been maintained for generations and is still a fine set of armour regardless of it's unmagical nature.
Backstory:
Tomotaka's rise to power was not as a grand tale of his equals. He did not have to murder, cheat, steal, or back stab to receive his title as Damiyo. Tamotaka inherited the title from his grandfather, who had peacefully passed away. Instead, Tomotoaka's fame comes from his actions as the new Damiyo, who when he took the title at a very young age had to deal with an invasion of their province. The enemies of the Toda have long surrounded Toda lands, kept from invading by shred diplomacy and a nature defenses. Toda itself was small and insignificant, yet still, enemies still circled, so when the teenage Tomotaka took the title of Damiyo, the warlords of the other clans thought the clan Toda would be as weak as a babe...they were wrong.
So his legend began, though not with battle, but with policy.
As a child Tomotaka was raised on stories from veterans in his clan about battles of times past, as well as debates of not only tactics and strategy but also of economics and policy. All of this help shaped the way Tomotaka viewed the world, helped shape him into the kind of warrior he is.
His first and most famous change was thus: formation of the ashiguru army.
The Toda clan has for centraies had a shrinking samurai population, as many families have perished in defence of the clan. At the time of the invasion, the only samurai warriors present were either old samurai veterans of times past or scholars who bore the title, yet have not donned the samurai armour or drew their sword on true foes, until now.
This group made for a terrible fighting force, but they did make for an excellent officer corp, one that was capable of both combat leadership and logstical organization.
Now that they had their leaders, they needed an army, of which the Toda lands provided plenty of recruits in the form of farmers, who were levied en mass in defense of the homeland.
Slavery was a rarity in the Toda lands, as the Toda people were a hardy folk, the vast majority of them today were farmers, who relied on themselves and family. So when their homes were invaded by their neighbors, they were easily swayed by Tomotako to swamped their farm tools for weapons and march against the invaders.
Tomotakl also abolished slavery from his lands with little objections, offering these former slaves a place to call home if they volunteered to join the Toda armies.
With this new army, the likes very little clans could even fathom, the Toda clan was able to repel attacking after attack.
But even as the last clan was sent running, Tomotaki knew that his enemies were only running to lick their wounds, but once they have recovered they’d be back. The only way, it was reasoned, to protect Toda lands was an aggressive defense: destroy the clans surrounding Toda before those clans destroy the Toda.
Building off of the momentum of the successful defense of the Toda lands, Tomotako led his army on the offensive, taking down clan after clan.
Though it should be said not all battles were victories, but time and time again Tomotako and his officers learned and became wiser because of it, changing up policy and strategy to refine their methods.
Bandits and wakos were recruited to conduct raids against enemy supply lines and haress/distract the enemy from their main goal, while also expanding their navel force. The capture of one province provided the armies of Toda with an elite unit: the Sōhei, warrior monks trained to be excellent warriors who speclize in demon hunting. There were even rumors that Tomotako had been using western technologies...
But most important of all was the policy regarding ronin.
As the army grew in size from the new recruits, there was a shortage of samurai officers. Tomotako implemented a policy on which provided ronin a chance to redeem themselves and reclaim their status of samurai by serving under the Toda clan. However, they would be retrained by an education system that was implemented by Tomotako, in which these warriors are taught to not just be warriors, but also leaders.
These were only a few changes Tomotako made, but it ended in peace, as all the clans surrounding Toda lands were conquered, peace once again fell upon Clan Toda.
But now Toda, being as big and as rich as it is, will attract new enemies.
It is a dangerous thing to be the tallest tree...for that is where the axe strikes first
But beyond that, Toda is attracting new allies too. As farmers and slaves flee from war torn lands and cruel masters while ronin and defeated warriors flock to Toda for redemption and revenge against their former enemies.
Tomotako stands tall today, least as tall as he can physically stand, but standing amongst an air of legend and with the title of “Commander of a Thousend Spears”

Best Trekkie. Best Trekkie. unfortunately I cannot accept this, in it's current state. Homo Erectus is too far removed from the time period, unless you find some way to justify it with demon/spirit hocus pocus.

Backstory: Yamato served 8 years as the samurai of a local lord near his hometown. He trained every day and brought justice upon criminals. However, the Lord got old and sick, and his death was impossible to prevent. Yamato tried studying different types of magic that could help the Lord in his struggle, but it took to long to perfect these magical skills, and the Lord died soon after. Most samurai had already begun to search for new Lords to serve, but Yamato just couldn't bring himself to do that. He kept being a local samurai, untill the Lord's son stripped him from his title and exiled him from the province. From that moment on, Yamato has been travelling across the country, in search for a purpose of life. During his travels, he encountered an Amanojaku. The demon persuaded him and provoked him into killing an innocent farmer's family. After this event, Yamato was able to free himself from the demon's posession. However, the demon was a part of him, so destroying it would mean both his and the demon's death. Yamato killed a tiger the next day, and let the demon posess it, so that they would always be able to travel together, to make sure the other didn't die. Now, Yamato is continuing to travel, looking for a way to make up for his sins.

-wakizashi

Black War Horse- It is notable that Tomotaka's horse is black, as it is heard him say during a battle where the enemy's general rode on a horse of flame "I don't need a horse made of fire to inspire my men to do deeds greater." It is said that in that same battle, Tomotaka rallied a group of broken ashigura spear-men into reforming and returning to battle, ultimately killing the enemy general on top of his flaming horse.

Magic User?: no.
Equipment:
  • Ōdachi, or a really big katana. (100 cm or less)
  • Breast plate
  • shin guards
  • guantlets
  • simple cotton clothing
  • pendant (from father
Backstory:
As already mentioned, Ashitaka is a wandering Samurai with a heart full of hate for the Emperor. At a young age, his home village was burned in front of him, forcing him to run and live what he could. He was "rescued" by an old Samurai who taught him everything he now knows, be it manners, mathematics, or the way of the katana.
His resentment towards the Emperor comes from the rumor that it was the Imperials' decision to send the Samurai to his village, and he claims that he "will not rest until the blood of the Emperor stains his clothes." He makes no time for others, and will kill for gold, but at the end of the day, he is just a young man with a grudge.

Daimyo Takayama Tomoteru
高山 友照

Age:
49

Sex:
Male

Affiliation:
The Takayama Clan

Physique:
The daimyo is slightly below the average height, being around 5' and 8". His weight is also around 153 pounds.

Tomoteru is an ageing man. His hair has faded from its original black colour. His face has wrinkles up. The daimyo cannot run, turn, and hold as much as he once could. Yet, that does not mean that he is weak. If he has to put on his armour and fight, he will. He can still leave a painful or even fatal strike if he has the chance to.

Magic-User:
The daimyo is no magic user.

Equipment:
Being the daimyo he is, Tomoteru has some good quality equipment. Usually, most of this stuff is not on him.
  • A Katana: This is a 26" curved, single edge blade with a red grip. It's a little old, but it is kept in good condition.
  • Tantō: This is a 9" blade, single-edge blade.
  • Armour: Tomoteru's armour composes of the following: an iron cuirass; a skirt of iron plates hanging from the cuirass; iron spaulders at the shoulders; sleeves of silk with connected mail and small iron plates; an iron helmet with a brim, neckguard, and a crest decoration; an iron mempo coloured red that goes from the nose and downward; iron and leather plates over the thighs that are tied to the waist; iron shin guards; leather sabatons; and a neck guard. It's a somewhat old, but it has not had much use.
Backstory:
Takayama Tomoteru was born long ago to the Takayama Clan. When he became 22, he inherited his father’s daimyo. In the first few years of his reign, things were good. He had two sons and a daughter. Tomoteru even attended and even participated in plays. He's quite liked by his populace for trying to continue prosperity. He did not do much fighting except for some martial arts and leading some men in ally-caused wars early on.

However, a new thing came along, the West. People from far away visited his land’s port. They had with them some interesting things.

At first, Tomoteru welcomed them. They seemed to be good, profitable people. He even let them buy land in the port and has a rug in his castle from traders that got it in a place called Persia. However, things got a little concerning when they built a temple to their god. Some of his subjects, even people in his clan, stared to go to their church. He did find it a little concerning that they had some loyalty to people far away. Other subjects also worried that it could mean more western power and influence in the daimyo, possibly even making the land a vassal. However he was also convinced that since there was no local leader beyond some priest, it would not be a large impact.

Things changed when his second son, Takayama Katsu, went to their church and even started to call himself "Cyrus." This made him worry about the future of his Daimyo after he is gone. Sure, his heir will be Katashi Takayama, his first son, but he has no heir of his own. If something was to happen to him, Katsu would then be the ruler. The converted locals would then have a more powerful local leader. He has realised that this has caused a division in the clan. For now, he is trying to ease tension and to possibly make a compromise.
This can work. Accepted.
