Name: Kago, The Self-Made Sage

Age: ??? (Late Teens?)

Profession: Wandering Swordsman

Specialty: Kenjutsu master, skilled at polearms/longbow

Ability: Kenjutsu Prodigy: There are those known as 'naturals', people who seemingly master skills over night whether it be art, crafts, agriculture, and war. In Koga's case, they are a natural born swordsman. Their combat sense is truly inhuman, a gift of the Gods hidden away in their previously unassuming life. Capable of easily mastering the most complex and difficult techniques as if they had years of practise, their real life skills have only grown greater with every battle since they have picked up the blade. Their foresight and combat sixth sense is on par with if not superior to that of veteran warriors. Yet even with their young age and inexperience, meaning they have much to learn, as they are right now is more dangerous than most fighters know in their whole lives.

Strengths: Great Hand-Foot-Eye coordination, fast reflexes, athletic, Master Sword fighting

Weaknesses: Little social skills, more focused on the abstract than the material, unlikely to turn down challenges or pursue problems with their blade

Personality: Koga is anm introverted soul, solely focused on their study on the Philosphy of the blade. Though they can wax over the philosophies quite well, their social skills are extremely limited, barely capable of the most basic of polite formalities. Their individualistic life also means it will take time for them to be accustomed to working with people rather than just doing things on their own. At the very least, they are diligent and honorable, not believing in going back on their word though they rarely give it in the first place.

Appearance: Wears a simple peasant kimono and a pair wooden sandals. Their most iconic features is the Tengai basket they wear over their head and the daisho at their hip, the blades sheaths being simple bambo wood and the handles wrapped in rough leather. An athletic if androgynous build, shorter than average.

Biography: Koga is not the first of their kind. Supposedly, the first Koga appeared centuries ago as a wandering monk (or disgraced ronin, the stories vary) who through trial and tribulation discovered enlightenment through the blade by devoting their mind, body, and soul into its development. He wore a Tengai to hide his face, as "Only through the shedding of ego can one release themselves of their shackles". He would've been the most famous of the swordsmen had he not fallen at the legendary 'Duel Between the Heaven and Earth' with the first Kensei, supposedly within the nearby mountain that has been claimed by demons and dark spirits. Since then samurai, ronin, bandits, and other types of individuals will forsake their belongings in favor of the Tengai and even forfeit their own name to take up the identity of Tengai. From true warrior sages seeking enlightenment to simple murderers hoping to hide their identity and benefit from the charity of spiritual folk, Koga have been sprinkled through the Empire's history as an infamous name that can be risky to trust, yet one some gamble on whether it be to receive sage wisdom or to at the very least have a skilled blade at their back (Though some have found that blade far to close to that back for their liking).

However, that is only history to refresh us on this Koga. Though their name and identity is naturally unknown, Koga has stated that they were not classically trained with the blade, but through chance found themselves weilding one and discovered their gift with its use. Having been 'lost' up to that point in their life, they have found a new drive to master the blade and unlock its mysteries. They have since walked the steps of the first Koga to better understand his path before venturing off and forging their own. They are at the end of this first journey, and hope to reach the summit of the mountain to complete their pilgrimage before starting their own story.

Items on hand (3): Katana, Wakazashi, Calligraphy Kit (Several sheefs of paper, one bottle of ink, one brush)

Extras (Tattoos, criminal record, additional information):

Likes: Meditation, tea, poetry, debating philosophy, contemplating ideas and thoughts, excercise

Dislikes: Complex social situations, speaking with the nobility, short sightedness, material obsession

Name: Kenji "The Rabid Monkey" Kimura

Age: 17

Profession: Duelist

Specialty:

Ten-no-te Jujutsu

For nearly all Samurai, the sword is everything. What happens once the sword fail?

When fights turned into a hectic exchange of blows or wrestling, what one can do with whatever available becomes important.

Ten-no-te Jujutsu teaches its students to utilize what's available to survive. Groin strikes, eye gouging, small joints manipulation, grappling, throws, and precisely striking the Tsubo of your enemy are taught to all students.

Kenji, like other noble boys of the time, studied his clan's Jujutsu.

At first, it took a back seat to his study of Kenjutsu and Bajutsu, but through a repeated sparring success the clan saw it fit that he specializes in the art.

The heavenly hand Jujutsu uniqueness lies in its ki usage. A curriculum is developed comprehensively to properly use one's ki in Ten-no-te Jujutsu. Kenji integrated his ki into his sword slashes, unarmed strikes, and physical strength, granting him supernatural strength and the ability to strike or slice his opponent from a distance.

Although considerably a veteran at the art, he's still far from unlocking the true secrets of ki and he still submits to his grandmasters.

Wushu / Bare Knuckle Boxing

Jujutsu was a serious art meant to kill and maim. Sportsmanship was rarely considered beyond the training grounds.

Kenji, however, found joy in sparring and doing combat as a sport.

The contact made with the westerners modernize the northern art of Wushu in the empire, evolving it into a full contact competitive martial arts that regularly held tournaments both at fairs or during any great celebration.

It was rare for members of the nobility to join such an event. At the time, Kenji didn't care. He's a fan of combat and tried to join a tournament.

Expecting an easy victory because of his Jujutsu background and real combat experience, he was bested easily and scarred his face. He continued to try for 10 times until his face was entirely unrecognizable.

It was humiliating for a samurai to be beaten by members of the lower class yet he swallowed his pride and used excuses to get out of Bajutsu training to study boxing under the westerners and a variety of Wushu disicplines under a northern master.

He made quite a name as a pugilist, earning the nickname "The Rabid Monkey" by the spectators. His eclectic fighting style blending wushu acrobatic moves, Jujutsu brutality, and boxing precision earned him the respect of other prizefighters.

Ability:

Leadership

While not a general, he has commanded squads in the skirmishes between the clans.

The Kimura has bitter power struggle with neighboring clans, frequently erupting into small wars that ended after one or two battles.

Starting at age 14, he's already considered mature enough to captain regiments and squads. His successes gave him fame, but the clan's patriarch never forgot of his humiliating defeat in the hands of commoners. No matter what he did, he would never be trusted to lead as a general.

Ki

The martial arts disciplines that he studied strengthened his spirit. Though at first out of touch with his Ki, the challenges of life strengthened his spirit and body.

The energies that allowed him to slash and strike his opponents from a distance. His fortitude also meant a strong will and mind, able to counter deception.

Strengths:

  • An orator with a strong voice
  • Heroic mannerism
  • Honorable
  • Hard Worker

Weaknesses:

  • Stubborn
  • Can crack under extreme pressure
  • Puts the clan's importance above the rest
  • Gambling
Personality:

Kenji is a driven individual. Raised with the discipline of a Samurai, he grew up hardened, tough, and honorable. He faces problem head on and deals with them in a matter of fact way.

But he's not always the steely tough Samurai that he is. He used to be a crybaby. Kenjutsu was never a specialty of his and he lost many to boys his age and even young Onna-Musha with their naginata. The scolding and beating he suffered from his father shaped him to the fine knight that he is, but under severe pressure the nervous little boy leaks and can make him look weak.

He's a firm believer in honor and hard work. He worked his fingers to the bone nearly everyday for 21 hours to get the respect that he deserve. He despised those who devalue work and used trickery or treachery to get what they want. This made him seen rigid and mean spirited at times, but he never meant harm to any of his friends.

Of course, he has his own share of whimsy. He's an avid gambler, losing tons of fortune in games of chance. He even lost a flawless jade sword he won from a boxing tournament to fund his gambling needs.

Appearance:

Kenji stands at a meager 5 foot 5 inches. He's lean, but wiry. Petite yet strong.

When he's in combat he'd wear the standard Samurai ensemble, a cuirass, a kabuto, greaves and boots. But most days he'd be seen with a silk shitagi bearing his clan insignia, loose pants and a pair of sandals.

He always has his katana and wakizashi around his waist. He has his hair short, tied to a Samurai knot.

His face is scarred, his nose is crooked, his lips are slightly busted. Marks from fists or blades can be clearly seen on his cheeks

Biography:

Kenji was born as the youngest son of the Kimura clan. Living with other 5 brothers who were skillful in their own right was tough. Kenji's arms were weaker than his brothers. A custom bokuto was even made for him, one that was much smaller than what the average youths would use.

He was incapable of winning his early fights. It's said that Kimura heirs are strong swordsmen and their talents could be seen as early as they are 5 years old. Kenji showed no such talent. Nearly all the boys at his dojo beat him.

It was so bad and embarrassing, his father even put him up against a young girl training to be an Onna-Musha thinking that he'd win the fight.

It didn't work out. She bested him. Tenji Kimura, his father and the clan's master, said that the spirit of the sword abandoned him. He was considered invalid and was told to tend to the dojo as a cleaner.

Hama Kimura, the Jujutsu grandmaster of the Kimura clan, saw him picked on by students of the dojo. Concerned the young lord cannot defend himself at all, Hama took him in and personally taught him Ten-no-te Jujutsu.

The art was supposed to be taught to adults to supplement their swordsmanship skill, but through Hama's early observation, he was sure Kenji's talent was not the blade, but the open hand martial arts.

Hama taught him like a father and Kenji reciprocated this love with devotion to the art. He worked day and night to perfect his form, his strikes, his throws, and his grappling. He even became a self taught biologist by joining senior Samurai to the battlefield, dissecting the corpses of their enemies and studied their joints, muscles, tendons, and musculoskeletal structure.

After studying the art intensively for 4 hard, long years he built up enough physical strength and endurance that Hama requested him be accepted back to his father's Kenjutsu Dojo.

Kenji was initially refused, but Hama offered to test his ability. His Jujutsu skill was tested against adult samurai, much older than he was, but still green and hasn't seen combat.

Many looked down upon the 9 year old, but he bested all of them despite the weight, age, and height difference. Kenji's techniques were said to have been enhanced through subtle ki usage, a feat many struggle to conquer. Impress, Tenji shook Kenji's hand and he officially began his Kenjutsu training then.

The young Kimura saw battles as early as he was 7. Kids matured fast in the Empire. At 10 he was allowed to carry a wakizashi and assisted fellow samurai in battle.

His resilience, drive, and tenacity won him his first real Katana at 11. He had his first O-Yoroi and was assigned to his first squad. Unlike the other students when they finished their training, he's declared as a master of Jujutsu not Kenjutsu. Kenji can outwrestlw many, but his swordsmanship needs work. To this day, Tenji still invites him to the dojo to better his sword techniques.

He fought loyally and bravely. The banner of the Kimura flew high when he arrived with his squad. The years of hard work gave birth to a strong willed samurai unwilling to surrender and will try whatever it takes to win the war. The clan's patriarch was proud of his son and was generous with compliments, rewards, titles, and adoration.

Unfortunately, Kenji's fame and success went over his head. He became arrogant and boasted about his combat prowess. The victories he had in sparring matches during Jujutsu training made him combative, hot headed, and overconfident.

One summer night, he visited a fair as most nobles did. Within the fair was a makeshift circle where two combatants punched, kicked, threw, and wrestled until one gave up.

Kenji knew he couldn't participate, but the prospect of shedding blood made him giddy. Without fear, he joined the tournament. His Jujutsu and successes in the battlefield convinced him of an easy victory.

When the first bell rung, he repeatedly made fouls using unorthodox Jujutsu techniques and was warned 10 times by the official. With the rules limiting him so much, he's immediately bested. Kimura even challenged the fighters for rematch 10 different times yet nothing changed. The pugilists pummelled his face so bad, he's bleeding with broken nose, ribs, arms, and legs.

The news of a noble joining such an event and lost reached the patriarch of the clan. Kenji's stellar record was besmirched.

The fists of the pugilists simply did not leave his mind. He continued to learn how to counter them, but his Jujutsu simply couldn't comply to the rules of the engagement.

Frustrated, he knew he needed help. Whenever the time for him to learn Bajutsu came, he would skip it to go to town. He offered silk for mentorship under the western athlete in the art of boxing and he offered a prized, jeweled Katana he salvaged from the dead body of a rival soldier to the northern warrior to teach him Wushu.

His path of learning the new arts was messy. Many times he'd go back to the ring and got beaten up by the athletic commoners. He never gave up, however. In Kenji's mind, losing does not mean the loss of honor if it's a fair and honest loss. He tuned out the noise of the aristocrats scolding him to not go back to the ring and perfected his knowledge.

After so much cruel pummeling and training, he ascended. He learned the motions and strategies involved. Kenji would then combine his 3 martial arts into a dynamic, efficient fighting style that bested boxers and wushu experts. He started winning fights after learning the art for 4-5 years.

The mastery of the multiple arts improved his combat performance. He fought beautifully for his Daimyo and rose to lead his own army.

Sadly, he won't ever be considered for the position of a general. Tenji Kimura was clear when he said that whatever Kenji had accomplished would never wash the drop of oil that spoiled his clean record. The embarrassment and disobedience against the clan were grave sins in Tenji's eyes.

Kenji got his vice from the tournaments too. He used to bet on himself entering the fight, but the itch appeared after he bet on others. He then started betting with dice, cards, basically whatever he had at hand.

Now a mature 17 year old, he sought to rid Tengoku of demons hiding in the mountain.

Weaknesses:

Poor close range fighting, overly curious, pyromaniac, few financial resources.

Personality:

Slow and thoughtful, Masafumi generally considers the question before answering, sometimes long after the conversation has moved on. Despite this, he can be quick to act when the moment and when he chooses to speak he can be quite insightful.

Appearance:

Short + broad
Dark hair
Heavily muscled
Surprisingly delicate hands

Biography:

The youngest son of firework makers, Masafumi was studied the art at his parents’ side. However, a downturn in the prefecture’s fortunes forced his family to downsize. As a result, Masafumi and many of his siblings were forced to find new trades. His parents pulled in every favour they had to see to his older siblings, but when they got to him there were few options beyond religious life. The first few years were, if not hard, not interesting either. It was only when the need for prayer was complimented by a need for defence that his skills were engaged. Translating firework manufacturing to gunpowder production took little time and allowed the monks to train Masafumi in the more exotic forms of their art.

Items on hand:

Yumi, arrows, chemists’ tools.

Name
Cedrick Jobbard II

Age
Young Adult

Profession
Scholar

Specialty

While Jobbard can handle a sword with varying degrees of prowess, his true expertise manifests in his surprising knowledge of natural remedies and herbs, cultivated by his inclusions on the more dangerous expeditions commissioned by the Wallian Scholarly Guild. On those occasions where something goes wrong, say a falling bit of architecture, poisonous berries, or hostile wildlife, Jobbard has had mixed but predominantly positive results with medication.

Ability

Jobbard was born a Scryer, an elusive class of mage in the western kingdoms, which can witness prophetic visions of the past, present, or future. In order to scry, a material component of a desired target is required. This can include part of a body (a lock of hair or a tooth), piece of land (a stone or a sod of earth), or a part of an object (splinter of wood or a scrap of metal), which is them pulverized and mixed with holy water in a scrying dish. Only the Scryer can bear witness to the vision, while any spectator would see no more than a reflection.

Strengths

⟢ Jobbard possesses a distinct knowledge of the natural world and stars, able to generally navigate where he's headed granted he knows enough about the surrounding region.
⟢ Being a member of the Wallian Scholarly Guild, Jobbard has a great wealth of knowledge concerning various subjects of study.
⟢ Jobbard is rather steadfast when it comes to upholding his moral and ethical standards, being especially stubborn when his core values are challenged.
⟢ Perhaps the biggest factor in his pilgrimage to the Far East, Jobbard is simply infatuated with learning about new concepts.

Weaknesses

⟢ Jobbard is generally unconfident in his skill with weaponry, choosing instead to heavily rely on armour.
⟢ Being in foreign lands and interacting with foreign cultures, outside of language, Jobbard is naïve and generally ignorant when it comes to more the subtle elements.
⟢ As a consequence of living within the relative safety of scholarly fortresses, Jobbard is much more attuned to diplomacy rather than all-out combat
⟢ Suffering from the plight of many scryers, Jobbard is wrought with a small amount of paranoia and delusion, causing him to be extremely conservative when it comes to scrying.

Name: Emiko Uiharu

Age: 16

Profession: onmyoji

Specialty: elemental and spiritual magic

Ability:
Godai
- Also called the magic of the five elements. Emiko can conjure and manipulate elements using chants and seal tags. She's also interested in another form of spellcasting from the west, runecrafting.

Spiritual Attunement: Out of the five elements, Emiko has an especially high affinity towards the void. Which is why she's able to handle spiritual entities like shikigami really well. Currently Tamago is her only shikigami. She can also detect nearby spiritual activity.

Spellcasting: The thing that make Emiko different from most magic practitioner is her focus on the spellcasting methods itself. She doesn't limit herself to one or two method and is eager to try new things. When she met a runemaker she immediately commisioned a rune tattoo and when came across new oversea trinket she might try to get her hands on it.

Arts: Her spellcasting pursuit lead her to learn many arts. Singing, instruments, dancing, painting, calligraphy, feng sui and more. Though she mastered none of them yet.

Strengths: Observant, nimble

Weaknesses: lack fighting technique, airheaded

Personality:
An aloof and cynical person. She talks slow and precise, a habit that she picked up after handling a rebellious shikigami who might puposefully misinterpret her order for years. Though when she cast a spell she chant very quickly it becomes unintelligible.

Appearance:
Emiko stands at 155cm. She poses traits from both her parents and her mixed race is quite obvious. Her skin is pale and she has hazel eyes that lacking the usual luster people have. Her hair is dark brown and she kept it at shoulder-length. Her attire usually consist of a black kimono and black hakama decorated with various flower patterns. A metal badge in the shape of a five-pointed star is pinned on the chest part to indicate her status as an onmyoji. She carries a seemingly empty bird cage everywhere.

Biography:
Born in the port town of Nagakujira, one of the places thriving from the trade with the westerners. Her father was a trader who decided to settle down and married a local. They decided to build a house next to a temple.

Little Emiko likes to spend a lot of her time in the temple's front yard, staring at people and talking to her imaginary friend. At first her parents didn't thought much of it but the head priestess noticed Emiko's rare talent to actually sense spiritual activity. She would later be recruited by the temple as one of the miko. During her time as a junior shrine maiden, the head priestess also teach her some kotodama and while Emiko seemed to be struggling in several aspects her magic growth was quite decent.

When she was 10 years old, someone from the west visited the shrine to ask for some blessing. He's apparently an 'archmage', a title reserved only for the best wizard in the faraway kingdoms. The man performed some magic and Emiko was fascinated by the process, he did it in different way yet the result was roughly the same as the one casted by the head priestess. When she asked the archmage about this he only said that "Magic is beyond language and culture."

Those words rang inside Emiko's mind and it actually motivated her to study magic further. She's especially curious about the way people from other parts of the world cast their magic. Her blossoming skills raised her quickly through the miko rank and it's not rare for her to accompany the head priestess to the meeting with important people as assisstant.

When she was 13, a bizzare event happened when half the population of a neighboring village acted very strangely. They ignored all their physical and social need, mindlessly piling a huge amount of firewood on a field and created a massive bonfire that could even be seen from miles away. The temple sent a team to investigate, Emiko was one of them and she immediately noticed the entity that had been controlling the villagers as if they're just mere puppets. It was a rampaging shikigami, broke free from the bound of its master and now was just doing whatever it wants to do. It was quite a powerful spirit so the temple team decided to bound it to someone who has the capability to handle it, that person was of course Emiko.

Having a shikigami bound to her means the temple must change her status from a miko to an onmyoji, the temple's official magic practitioner. Emiko was quite happy with it, she now had more freedom and time to focus on her passion in learning about spellcasting. It's not rare for her to travel around so she could seek inspiration from various texts and other practitioners.

Items on hand:
- Spirit lantern: a magic lantern that looks like a round bird cage made of black metal. It's where Tamago is bounded. It looks empty most of the time but anyone capable of sensing spirit would see a floating orb of light with a face inside.
- Seal tags
- A flute, which she can use to chain several magic chants into one harmonious music to cast multiple spells in quick succession.

Extras:
- Emiko has an experimental runic tattoo on her left arm, hidden from view by the sleeve of her kimono. It looks like a bunch of blue rectangular lines overlapping each other. It can be used to perform simple telekinesis, but will strain her hand for each use.
- She use her mother's family name to make it easier for her to socialize, her english name with her father's surname is Emily Stroud.

Name: Saori Kumagai

Age: Young Adult. (~18)

Profession: Shinobi

Specialty: Saori is a master of her clan's Ninpo and Ninjutu styles, mostly using her ninjutsu to trick her foes into a false sense of security and escape, she's a hard foe to pin down without another shinobi present to counter her. While she prefers to leave combat to a heavier armed fighter, Saori is quite skilled with the weapons she carries on hand, and most often always seems to have a weapon on standby.

Ability:
Ninpo- The art of strategy, tactics of unconventional warfare, espionage and assassination. Saori is quite deft at her teachings, able to move around the shadows with relative ease using her cunning wit and training, often finding her is more of a matter of if she lets you.

Ninjutsu- A form of magic that some practitioners use to command the elements. Saori is not one of those, instead, her Ninjutsu is used to bind her foes, disguise herself, create illusions of herself, replace one target for another, and especially escape situations she had no business being in.

Jack of all Trades- Having had to disguise herself as many things, she generally is okay at doing most non-combat things, such as sewing, cooking, hunting, and so on, by no means is she a master at any of these, but she has enough knowhow to get by.

Strengths:
  • Nimble Coordination- Saori is extremely light on her feet, and capable of climbing quite effectively.
  • Stealth- It'd be awkward if a shinobi wasn't good at this...
  • Poisoner- Saori knows her poisons, and often can select the right poison for the target.
  • Scouting- Observant to a point, Saori is a good scout.

Weaknesses:
  • Zero Defense- Simply put, Saori has no armour protecting her, as she relies on evading rather than rolling with hits.
  • Lone Wolf- Saori tends not to rely on anyone else for help, and is stubborn of it as well.
  • Set in her ways- Change for Saori is very difficult, and takes her a long time to do such, if she even bothers to do so...
  • Communication?- Saori is rather quiet, leaving a lot to be desired in the realm of communicating her ideas and actions.

Personality:
A cunning and cold assassin, Saori is often seen as just a silent killing machine by those around her, seeming to come and go with the wind. While she is seen and carries herself as such, having, in her own words, killed her emotions, quite the opposite is how she truly is. Reserved and calm, she carries herself different with those whom earned her trust, treating them to the best of her abilities, putting their needs over her own and doing what she can to protect them from harm. Soft of voice, it is often seen that she'd rather support her companions and allies' endeavors that do not involve fighting and killing, hoping they stray from the path that she undertook.

Appearance:
It is hard to distinguish many of Saori's features while her mask and hood are on, as outside of her soft skin tone, the only thing one can see is a set of violet eyes in some light, in other light they appear a very light blue. However, under the hood rests shoulder-length raven-black hair, which Saori keeps short out of habit now, when she wants to blend in with the regular commonfolk, it is often seen she wears a red kimono tied under a black Hakama, while wearing this, Saori tends to wear her Shinobi attire beneath, in case she needs to make a quick change.

Biography:
Born to the Kumagai Shinobi clan, Saori was the middle child of three. Raised quietly in the mountains of the Empire, Saori was aware that her elder brother was to take the reigns of the clan after her father, leaving Saori and her younger sister, Yuzu, to be trained as one of the Shinobi that were the clan's sword and shield. The first lessons were that of "Ninpo" and learning the arts of stealth, and espionage, a set of lessons Saori had some skill in, especially with her interesting eyes.

Learning stealth was a trial, figuring out how to move while being directly looked at, and remain unseen through it all. Then, espionage, how close could she get to see and hear the information presented, how much could Saori recall, and how well could she recite that same information after twenty-four hours awake. Each of these trials, Saori took in stride, while she was no prodigy, and required multiple attempts at the tasks, she soon moved to the next steps of her training, Ninjutsu.

Harnessing the magics of her clan, Saori took to these lessons quickly, while she was unable to bend the elements like her younger sister, Yuzu, Saori's deception and toolkit spells were far superior in comparison. It took years for her to fully master and realize her spells, starting slow in her incantations, managing her skills with effort and having to focus on her spell, yet, as time wore on, Saori managed her way.

After her training, Saori was sent on smaller tasks often spying and scouting for the highest bidder. Soon turning her simple scouting and espionage missions into assassinations and slaying of monsters throughout the region.

Items on hand (3):
~Kusarigama - "Chain Sickle" Often her preferred weapon, Saori feels unprotected if it is not on her possession or at the least nearby.
~Wakizashi - A family heirloom, hers features a lily on the menuki with a red ito wrap.
~Various thrown weapons, ranging from poisoned needles to shuriken.

Extras (Tattoos, criminal record, additional information):
Criminal Record: While she's not been caught, Saori has multiple counts of murder to her, and a very long list of petty thievery, breaking and entering, assault, and espionage.

Please let me know if anything needs change~! ♥
