  It seemed to be a normal school year for the teachers and students at Barrowwoods School of Magic, until one October something strange began to happen to magic users across Canada: One by one, people were losing their magical ability with no known way to regain it. Originally, the problem was swept under the rug even by the leaders of Magical Society, but eventually this becomes difficult to ignore, especially as those who have lost their magic are speaking up. Rumors are abounding, and people are becoming afraid of being the next to lose their magic. Among those who search for an answer to this distressing mystery is a group of middle and secondary school students at Barrowwoods.

  Roles in orange are essential for the roleplay to function, and the rp cannot be started without them being filled. PM me if interested in one of these essential roles. Other roles are available, but are not specified as there are not many limits or requisites to what they can be.
  
  
  • The Thief- - Open - Older sibling of the Recipient. Due to their sibling's seeminly complete inability to use magic, they have striven to find a way to help them with this problem. Upon discovering that magic can be taken from those with magical ability so that someone without it can use it, they take to stealing magic for their sibling. Problematically, the stolen magic seems to go away completely after about a week, meaning that they have to continuously take magic for sibling in order for them to keep using it.
  • The Recipient- Taken by Blackrose7 - Younger sibling of the Thief, student at Barrowwood. All their life, they had waited for their magical abilities to work, but even past the age where most people start to get their magical abilities, and even past the point where they might be called a late-bloomer, they show no signs of being able to use magic. Their older sibling, the Thief, eventually learns to steal magic for them, but each person's magic that they receive doesn't last long.
  • The Detective - Open - This private investigator has been tasked with investigating the growing problem of stolen magic. When they find out that students at Barrowwood, the Sleuths, are also trying to investigate, they become concerned for the student's safety and try to discourage them from getting involved. May appear later than sooner, depending on the preferences and ideas of whoever's character takes this role.
  • The Miscreant - Open - Having witnessed the Thief stealing magic, they try every which way to get them to teach them the secret to taking another person's magic, but to no avail.
  • The Confidante - Taken by Kitteh - Best friend of the Recipient, they are aware of how the Recipient got their new magic. They are willing to keep the secret despite worries of the magic theft getting out of hand, if only to stay friends with the Recipient.
  • The Sleuths - Unlimited - These students are trying to investigate the magic losses, but eventually butt heads with the Detective, who worries for their safety. Even after being admonished by the Detective, most of the Sleuths do what they can to find out why people have been losing their magical powers.
  • The Diverters - Unlimited - Those who keep the Sleuths from their investigations, whether out of concern for their wellbeing or to intentionally cover up the truth. May be a staff member, student, or perhaps a relative or friend of the Thief or Recipient. Could also be a concerned or corrupt government official. The possibilities are endless. This role may be major or minor, depending on the roleplayer's preference.

  • Barrowwood School of Magic is located in a small town, also called Barrowwood, in central Ontario. The school is divided into three houses that are named after native plants: Spicebush, Elder, and Thistle. Students are placed in these houses based on their magical traits and abilities.
    • Spicebush- Humans with magical capabilities, but no other apparent magical traits
    • Elder- Shapeshifting and other such humanlike creatures with other magical traits in addition to their abilities. (Satyrs, werewolves, vampires, etc.)
    • Thistle- Students who do not show magical abilities at the time of enrollment, but are still affiliated with Magical Society. May be late bloomers, or just plain unable to use magic. Can be any creature, not just humans
  • Most people with magical abilities can use magic to some extent from as young as seven years, provided that they do not lose this ability to an external factor, which may be temporary or permanent. Magic is usually clumsy and only strong enough to be noticed when the user is that young, but with practice can become accurate and powerful. Anyone with magical ability has the potential for any kind of magic that exists.
    Limitations include
    • Mind control- No magic exists that can directly make somebody believe something they otherwise wouldn't, erase or implant memories, or override someone's identity and free will. Magic can alter what the senses perceive, but this is usually limited to a single target entity, location, or object; An example of such magic would be disguising a utility pole to look like a tree, or making a car invisible.
    • Raising the dead- While magic can induce a temporary state with the appearance of death that wears off with time, or heal mortal injuries, if a character is sincerely dead even someone with maximum skill in magic cannot return them to life.
  • While the Canadian government has been historically aware of the existence of magic, a treaty was made between Magical Society and the government to (among other things) grant secrecy to Magical Society as long as they handle most of their own problems and refrain from interacting with most nonmagical citizens without hiding their magic. As a result of this treaty, Magical Society has been granted land, which has been made into secretive towns such as Barrowwood where magical folks don't have to hide what they are, magic-wise.

Also, it makes sense that The Recipient has the power to give people their magic back. Not only has The Thief has been giving them a bunch of different types of magic. This situation is the perfect way for that kind of magic to appear.

You're welcome, and The Recipient's magic is interesting. They are basically giving people the option to learn a different kind of magic here.
The problem for them is that they can't remove the magic once they give it to someone. The magic becames permanent for them.
Only The Thief can do that, and oh boy. They can mess with the magic that the person doesn't like so they learn about it together.
