I cannot quench your thirst Because even if you yearn for the truth, you refuse to believe in it. I cannot quench your thirst Because no such truth exists that you are in anticipation for. But I still want to quench your thirst. Because I am the one the that put you into the desert.

Personality:

Erika is what you would call a narcissist. She is confident in herself and her abilities in analyzing, and often goes to great measures to prove that she is right and everyone else is wrong, whether it be through deceit, wordplay, or even flat-out yelling at the person she is targeting until they agree with her. However, consequentially, her confidence in her abilities often leads to her underestimating her opponents, which can be her sole weakness. She is quite stubborn sometimes all the time, therefore even when something has been dropped, refuses to believe that she has figured something out. Ironically, her stubbornness is what makes her such a great detective.

Erika is a very analytical person who learns through her own very odd experiments to discover new things. Some of these "experiments" can be borderline dangerous for this detective, though, which often leads to Rika dragging her away from the experiment that way it doesn't go very far. She very enthusiastically attempts to disprove the abilities of Gifted Humans, even going with the most outrageous theories on how they could have possibly achieved what she calls their "illusions of the eye". She is an extreme realist and there is a possibility that she has snapped in her (pointless) attempts to find logic in everything.

When it comes to relationships with others, Erika isn't exactly what you would call "friendly". She just has never quite been that type of person; therefore, it's easy to come to the conclusion that she has no friends, except perhaps Rika. On the rare occasion that she befriends someone, she can be ridiculously formal towards them...to put it simply, she just has no clue how to deal with people. This is what happens when you were raised with Clue and chess as your best friends....

*facepalm*

Backstory:

Erika was born the daughter of a rather diligent mafia hitman, into wealth and comfort. Her family wasn't very trusting of those outside the mafia, so she had no servants. Life itself was dull and lonely, seeing as Erika was told to stay home all day for her safety. In a way, the girl's parents completely neglected her, so she had to learn to take care of herself at a very young age. She taught herself to stay occupied with activities such as chess, basically wiring herself to think strategically. The closest thing she actually had to a friend was Madhu Leolam, who occasionally dropped by to check on her and/or drag her to mafia meetings.

However, by thirteen, it was too late. On a rather quiet winter day, Erika, fed up with the lack of attention, climbed to the top of her lonely house and jumped off, therefore committing suicide. Before the Grim Reaper arrived to take her soul away, though, she was greeted by someone different.

Frederika Bernkastel was kind to Erika, giving her a second chance at life by sending Erika's soul into Bernkastel's body. Erika befriended another deceased soul, Rika, who had died of heart disease at the age of nine. However, as the years passed, it was clear that Bern's motives were much more sinister. Erika spent a whole five years as an alternate persona, and her detective skills were taken advantage of by Bern. At the five-year mark, Bernkastel sent Erika's soul into the body of Emmanuel Leolam, simply because she was bored. Erika attempted and failed to find Bernkastel.

Erika has been an alternate personality of Emmanuel for two years now, and she has (reluctantly) learned to adjust.

Emmanuel Leolam @TripTripleTimes - "Ehhhh sometimes we argue, but we actually get along okay. Guess we kind of have to, seeing as we're stuck in the same body. But, you know...we just want to be separated and stuff. Still, he's more tolerable than Bern."

Rika Furude - "Ever since I died, she's been my faithful sidekick :'). All I have to do is bribe her with candy."

Frederika Bernkastel - "shE WAS SUPPOSED TO BE SIDEKICK #2 BUT NOOOOOOO! NOT HER ROYAL HIGHDUND FREDERIKA BERNKASTEL! *at this point Erika started on a 30-minute monologue about how much she hates Bern*"

Cirilla Vines @Mitchs98 - "She flashed me once, which I'm still mad about. However, well...you know, you get close to people close to people you're stuck in the body of. She's actually not half-bad....just....so hyper. Needs to cut down on the coffee."

THE CHILD

The little girl cried when she lost her marbles in the desert. She searched the desert for one hundred years. The little girl cried when she thought she might've lost them in the sea rather than the desert. She searched the depths of the sea for one hundred years. The little girl cried when she thought she might've lost them in the mountains than the sea. How long will it take till she begins to doubt whether or not she actually lost them to begin with?

Rank:

Dislikes:

• When Erika talks too fast

• Sitting Still

Fears:

• Bernkastel Returning

Personality:

Ever since Bernkastel "died", Rika has never quite been the same childish, innocent girl she once was. She has grown up fairly quickly, learning to become a lot more responsible and aware of the many responsibilities that come with the manipulation of time. Sometimes it feels as though she has turned into a 97-year-old in a 17-year-old's body...which can be true in some cases, but not really. As in, she's trying and failing to act as such.

Rika still retains quite a bit of the old naïveté of her fifteen year old self, and she obviously still has a lot to learn about life. She is still calm and quiet, almost timid, and the odd verbal tic has only developed from addressing herself in the third person to addressing herself in multiple first person (so like "we")...which is probably a consequence to having technically been one of three personalities for so long. There are moments, however, when she says something oddly wise or intelligent. These moments tend to catch a lot of people off guard.

Thanks to Bern's little trick, Rika, who had been shoved into a body of a little girl, has sort of merged souls with the child. She sometimes shows signs of being a lot like the girl, such as sudden panic attacks or being a little overly emotional and childish, but Rika is determined to save what she accidentally destroyed.

She already knows she's too late.

Backstory:

Rika's family was a poor family that wound up in Hell City under unfortunate circumstances and ended up stuck there due to Rika's mom becoming pregnant with her shortly after they moved. Her mother had grown addicted to drugs and alcohol, however, which consequentially gave Rika heart failure. Rika spent her childhood inside of their small makeshift house in Omega, while her parents, both beggars, attempted to scratch up enough money to help Rika get well. Despite this, Rika actually lived a very happy childhood, learning to adjust to her situation and such. At age eight, a few weeks before her ninth birthday, Rika passed away in her sleep.

Like Erika, before the Grim Reaper could take her soul to the Underworld, Bernkastel took Rika's soul instead after making a deal with her parents. Her mother and father left Hell City, never to return again, while Rika was basically raised by Bern, and a year later, Erika. She was probably the most cheerful personality out of the three, even coercing Bern and Erika into joining Jumbo's Take-In Association. There, she became smitten with the leader, William. In 2042, Rika's soul was taken out of Bern's body and into that of a six-year-old. The child lasted a couple weeks before her soul seemed to disappear, leaving Rika in control of the body. It was then when she realized just how cruel life can be. Rika never got over this, feeling responsible for basically killing the child. She began to change, becoming more mature and more determined to never be so gullible again.

Strengths:

- Very Strong

- Smart

- Armed Combat

Weaknesses:

- Size Disadvantage

- Low Endurance

Aura Ability:

Tick Tock - Rika's lesser-used ability is manipulating time. She can send herself and up to three other people backwards and forwards in time. Consequentially, she has to be careful not to alter the timeline too much.

Memory Fragment - A much less extreme ability, but Rika has the ability to make the memories of others visible, either to herself, right in front of other people (like a movie), or sent telepathically. These often appear as shards of glass, either a light blue or purple.

Skills:

• Comforting People

• Peacemaking in General

Personality:

Bernkastel is rather quiet and expressionless. She's reserved and doesn't think highly of her efforts. Bernkastel spends time using her ability against others in hopes of escaping boredom. To her, the world is a big show and she is merely an observer, but she often finds others to be dull whenever they are living in a time of happiness.

Bernkastel is an extreme sadist. She takes pleasure in watching those around her suffering, and there is evidence that she hardly views anyone as worthy of living. Bernkastel is very violent when angered, despite the fact that she has a poker face 99.9% of the time. When she smiles, it often isn't a good sign, either. She is merciless even towards her own followers. Bern has never been the type for mercy, and she does her best to stress that. Her sense of humor is twisted and cynical.

Bernkastel is a sharp thinker and she's intelligent. She's an avid reader and is well-versed in mystery novels, often taking inspiration from them. She can be very stubborn sometimes, though, and it takes a shitload of reasoning for her to follow someone's advice. She likes to believe she is right and won't listen to anyone else. Bernkastel acknowledges the fact that she is cruel and she won't run from the truth of her actions. She is aware of what she has done, almost proud of it, and hasn't ever thought much of being guilty. In her opinion, she has done her standard of "the right thing".

Backstory:

Frederika Bernkastel's true origins are long since forgotten, marred and tarnished by the many rumors and folk tales of her cruelty surrounding her in Hell City, each of these stories being so different that it has been proven extremely difficult to figure out exactly what is the truth and which were merely made up.

The most believable of them, which can be found in the writings of Miss Lily Underworld, an old rival of Bernkastel's, takes a very logical and well-researched approach. The following has been assumed to be the "true story" of Bernkastel:

The well-hidden story of Frederika Bernkastel most likely started in Bernkastel-Kues, Germany, a small town best known for its vineyards and breweries. One of the smaller vineyards belonged to the Keller family, a father and mother with a pair of twins; Frederich and Wilhemina, born on January 3rd, 2015. Not much is known about the parents' permanent records; evidence suggests that one or both of them had a name change, most likely to cover up some sort of crime committed in the past, seeing as the father's name didn't appear until 2012, when he and his wife moved to Bernkastel-Kues.

Local gossip says that while Frederich was a charismatic, cheerful, and friendly boy, there was definitely something off about Wilhemina. The girl was described as a "lovely child with purple hair", but she was also "surprisingly calm and intelligent for her age", not to mention "eerie", with the very disturbing habit to sneak away from her brother and his friends so she could visit the local morgue. The mortician, Lutz Corlohz, was very fond of Wilhemina, even allowing her to watch him cremate the corpses. In his own words;

"She didn't say much when she watched me, she'd just silently observe, often munching on an ice cream cone. Sometimes she'd ask questions about today's body--clever questions, the girl was very bright--and I'd always answer them for her as she wrote the answers down in a little blue notepad."*

It's also known that Wilhemina was incredibly close to her brother, known for interfering immediately if someone said one foul word against Frederich. It never expanded to the point of violence until 2022, when Wilhemina was seven. A local woman filed a report to the police after her sons came home from the Keller house, one with a missing eye and the other with his ear cut off. When asked who did this, they said it was "that crazy girl". One week later, their corpses were found on the front patio of the woman's house, hanging from two separate, well-fashioned nooses. That same year, there were several reports of schoolchildren getting murdered. Naturally, Wilhemina became a prime suspect due to her increasingly odd behavior, described as walking around town in a possessed state, talking to disembodied voices, her demeanor rapidly switching, and even lashing out against the village children. Frederich stubbornly disbelieved that Wilhemina was responsible until in late June, when he discovered the corpses of three girls who'd been teasing the seven-year-old earlier hidden in the vineyard, along with many assorted torture weapons and a book on witchcraft**. He wrote of this in his journal but never reported these actions to the police, most likely because he still cared for his sister.

Then, in late July of that same year***, the Keller vineyard burnt down. The corpses of Frederich and his parents were found in the rubble. Wilhemina's body was never found, but in the barn ten severed toes matching her DNA were found with police, along with all the objects Frederich described in his journal....except the book.

The citizens of Bernkastel-Kues were left in peace after Wilhemina disappeared, but across Europe there were sightings of a floating little girl with dark purple hair. This girl was said to be a ghost and omen of a violent demise, for witnesses of this girl's sightings were often found dead shortly after reporting her sighting. She was always described as not having toes.

After three weeks of the girl being sighted in England, a girl matching the description of the "ghost" entered the Japanese village of Hinamizawa as of 2024. When asked who she was, where she came from, and who her parents were, she merely responded that her name was Frederica**** and that she lived in a house by the swamp with a "Juuzo Oyashiro", who she claimed to be her father and a retired doctor. This, of course, made the three great families of Hinamuzawa (In order of power ranking--Sonozaki, Furude, and Hojo) wary, seeing as there were legends surrounding a demon known as "Oyashiro-sama", of whom had cursed the village with "parasites" causing Hinamizawa Syndrome (an interesting mental disorder causing paranoia and violent tendencies, especially during the local "Cotton-Drifting Festival". That year, six people were murdered, the other six going missing. Frederica one of those who "disappeared"; however, there were many sightings of her. She terrorized the Furudes, who owned the local shrine; enough to drive them out of Hinamizawa in 2026 (the same year that the current head, Rika Furude I, had conceived a baby girl). After that, the terrifying flying child's disappeared off the face of the globe as the Furudes settled into Hell City. Rika Furude II was born in 2027, albeit with heart disease, and for a while, there wasn't much to worry about.

However, in 2030, a fifteen year old girl under the name of Frederika Bernkastel entered the city. She befriended and fell in love with Katerina Lambdadelta, an assassin, and the two of them developed a certain romance. However, Lambdadelta later broke away from Bernkastel, and despaired, she punished her ex-girlfriend by nearly drowning her. Lambdadelta survived the encounter, but was very traumatized as a result. In 2037, Bernkastel took the soul of former mafia member Erika Furudo, and for the first time, her power of collecting dead souls was revealed*****. A year later, she took the soul of Rika Furude II, threatening her family to leave Hell City and return to Hinamizawa, which they obliged to do.

The rest we already know.

*From a 2025 interview with Corlohz
**This suggests that Wilhemina committed these crimes to complete a ritual, most likely to get the ability of flight. If that's true then it's extremely likely that she cut off her toes to complete the ritual. (Note to Self: Find a way to take off Bernkastel's shoes)
***Two years before Erika Furudo was born
****Probably based off of Frederich's name
*****I'm saying revealed and not developed because evidence of her (possible) childhood shows she most likely has had the ability since she was young.

Dead Soul - The ability to transfer dead souls into living bodies. Bern has total control over the souls of the dead that she has "collected", meaning that she can wipe the soul's memories, make them relive the worst moments in their lives, and even move them into her body by her own willpower. The drawback is that, due to this, Bern has lost all emotion and her sanity.

Flight - Self-explanatory. A side effect to Dead Soul, she has the ability to fly. Consequentially, every time she walks on the ground, it feels as though she is walking on needles.
