Josh watched the rest of them disperse and sighed, shaking his head. He didn't like this, but he was good at turning off his emotions at this point. Shoving them into a cage to perhaps deal with later. He turned to looked at Soren when he spoke and nodded as he listened. "They are, and what more can we do? We gave them a safe place to live. None of us chose this life, but we all have to make due." He said, turning to head back to their route. "Yes, let's finish the route. Then I have to work on the report for what just happened." Josh added as he started walking.

Jacob rubbed Theo's back, seeing the pout and he sighed softly. Kai looked at Hayden, hearing him and nodded. He didn't want that to happen again. He curled into Hayden's chest, happy enough to be carried right now. It carried safety being in Hayden's arms and while he stopped crying, he was still not his normal happy self. Jacob was fine with holding Theo as they headed towards the mall. He wanted to complain about that man, but what good would that do? Not much he supposed.

It was horrible what they had to deal with, yes, but this was better than the alternative. Soren would never have people outside the FEDRA walls to be picked off by infected or starve because of the lack of food. Exposure to the weather was bad. There were so many bad things out there. This was as good as they could do. He moved along with Josh, commending their men for their work as well. “You know what the best part about us being a team is? You don’t have to do that report alone.” He smiled and hoped it was enough to get a little bit of that old Josh back. He liked to hide somewhere in there, especially after situations like this.

They moved in silence for a while, though Hayden knew that would never work with having the little ones. Eventually he started talking about what was around them to distract them from their sadness. Theo’s pout stayed almost the entire journey to the mall. It was only when he could see the massive structure that his eyes grew wide with anticipation. He wanted to see it all.

Josh sighed as they continued their route and looked at Soren when he spoke. "I can do it, you should spend time with your fiancé." Josh said, facing forward, not seeing that smile. He didn't want to think about going home, not after last night. Not after the last two years. He could feel his old self pushing at the cage he was trapped in, but he just slammed the bars and knocked him down. "I've got other stuff to do anyway so that when we have your wedding, things will run smoothly."

Kai was quiet, listening to Hayden talk about what was around them. He poked his head up and saw the mall, his own eyes growing wide. He squirmed in Hayden's arms, that pout disappearing as they got closer to the massive structure. It was still relatively in once piece, and had been cleared of infected but FEDRA pretty much ignored the shops. It was cleared out because it was in the Zone, but it wasn't needed. They took the food, but that was it. "Ready to explore the mall boys?" Jacob asked as they got to the front doors.

Nope, Soren did not approve of this. He let it slide a lot, because frankly he desperately wanted to be home with Jacob, but this was too much for one person to handle. He had been saying that for years. “I know you can. You are the most capable commander out here. But, as your faithful partner in fighting crime, it will go faster and smoother with the two of us.” He clapped a hand on Josh’s shoulder. “I love Jacob,” he really, really loved Jacob, “but I also love to be around you. You’re my best friend.” His best not Jacob friend. And also his personal project.

When they got closer, Hayden started talking specifically about the mall. “Okay. Ground rules. You don’t get to go down until you listen to the rules. Rule number one. You must stay where you can see us and we can see you at all times. If you want to go somewhere else, you have to take an adult with us.” He leaned in and stage whispered to them. “You can’t let Jacob get lost.” After a moment of laughing, he continued. “Rule number two. Don’t touch anything without asking us first. There may be some fun things in there, but there may also be dangerous things. Ask us first and we can help you.”

Josh looked at Soren, hearing him but he wasn't paying attention either. He shook his head, feeling the hand clap on his shoulder. He knew it took longer with just one, but it was easier to avoid the apartment if he was busy. So he tried to be busy. He took extra patrols from other groups so they could have time with their families if they choose, or if someone wasn't feeling well. He was listening to Soren as he spoke. "At least someone loves to be around me." Josh muttered, his tone low and rough.

Kaiden looked up at Hayden, hearing his words and then giggled at the comment about not letting Jacob get lost. That made the former nurse shaking his head and sigh heavily. "Yes. We cannot allow me to get lost." He agreed, rolling his eyes. "Alright, do you understand the rules that Hayden said?" Jacob asked. Kai nodded, squirming in his hold. "Yes! Down!" He said, wriggling as he spoke.

Soren felt like he was just punched in the gut with that statement. It was not against him, of course, and he probably should have felt bad for Hayden and Jacob, but really, he felt bad for Josh. He was going through a lot, and no one seemed to understand his side of the problem. Hopefully Soren was at least understand some of it. That was hard since he had only had one real relationship before, and it was going fantastically. “Hey, that’s not true. They love you too, Josh. Hayden and Jacob both love you. Things are hard, yeah. It sucks, and I’m sorry that it’s rough. Jacob tells me that it’s rough for Hayden.” That was an understatement. “I know that’s not fair to you. But he loves you. He’s not always good at showing it.” That was also an understatement. Soren had heard some of those arguments through the walls. “I know he does.”

Theo was also giggling and trying to wiggle free from Jacob’s grasp. He pointed to himself and then Jacob. “See. Down! Down down down!” Hayden thought this was about as much of an affirmative that they were going to get, so he lowered Kai to the ground. “Where we can see you and you can see us at all times!” He started moving to the closest entrance.

Josh listened to Soren, hearing him and shook his head as he did. It was getting harder and harder to believe him. He looked at him real quick and snorted softly. "I want to believe you, I do. But if he loved me then why would he chose to sleep on the couch, or refuse to even look or talk to me? It's just.. easier for both of us if I keep busy." He said, knowing the arguments they have. "Sometimes, I really doubt that he loves me." Josh said as they drew nearer to the end of their route.

Once Kaiden was lowered to the ground, he took Theo's hand when Jacob set him down as well. "Lets go!" Kai giggled as he pulled on Theo's hand. Jacob chuckled as he followed the two little ones, shaking his head with a smile on his face. "This will be interesting." Jacob said as he looked at Hayden, hand reaching for the door into the mall.

That must have happened last night. That must have been why it was a little harder today than other days to have this discussion. It was this kind of hard all the time, and today felt worse. Soren grabbed Josh’s arm, trying to stop them before they were at the end where they would meet up with the other guys. There was no way that he could get Josh to open up if they had everyone else around them. “You can’t live like that. That’s miserable.” He would not know what to do if Jacob did that to him. They were always talking and open about everything. “I wish you could talk to him. I think that could help you both a lot.”

Theo nearly tumbled when he was set down due to the extreme wiggling. He did not. When Kai took his hand, he took off running, though they couldn’t get terribly far until Jacob was able to open the door. Hayden blocked the kids from immediately dashing in so that they could see inside first. It really was in pretty good shape over all. He had a feeling that certain parts may have been a little worse for wear. So far, it looked like an abandoned place. “Okay. I know there was a suit shop somewhere in here. I couldn’t afford a good one before. I remember going to every one of these places trying to figure out which were the cheapest or when their sales were.” He smiled remembering. “I didn’t know how we were going to afford suits for the wedding. Or anything for the wedding actually.” His face fell.

Josh’s eyes snapped to the hand on his arm, and sighed roughly. He followed that hand up to look at Soren. “You think I like living this way? I’ve tried to talk to him. But sometimes I can’t even get within two feet of him and he’s turning away from me. We argue instead.” Josh said, his irritation levels rising. “Soren. I appreciate you trying to help. I’m just.. I don’t know. I need to think.” He said shaking his head. Josh made to turn away, ready to finish the patrol.

Jacob opened the door while Kai huffed at the block by Hayden. He wanted to go exploring. Even at four years old he loved to check things out. To learn and explore. Jacob looked at Hayden as they checked the inside. “You know what we’re going to do? We’re going to the most expensive suit shop here. And we’re going to get us a pair of handsome suits and show these soldier boys what they’re missing. Yours in particular. Because who will stop us? Money isn’t a thing anymore and no one’s lining up for new suits anyway. What do you think buddy?” He said, seeing that face fall.

That was all he could do for now. Soren had been around Josh long enough to know that. For two years, they had been by each other’s side. For two years, they had been the dynamic duo of the officers. If he wanted to keep that, he had to drop things at least for now. Was Hayden really ignoring him like that? Maybe. Or maybe Josh was only focusing on the negative parts. So many people did. He frowned and walked in silence, refusing to leave Josh’s side. Refusing. They could finish the patrol together.

When Hayden released them, Theo ran as fast as he could with Kai in tow. He was a fast little three year old. He had places to explore like literally the entire mall. Of course, wherever Kai went, he would follow. He had places to explore with him naturally. Hayden stared out into the empty and wide halls that used to be filled with people. People like him and Josh. He was overwhelmed by a longing to have Josh there with him, holding his hand. They did that before, especially in their high school years when they didn’t have a whole lot else to do. There was a shop down the way with these really nice suits that Hayden always liked to stop and look at. He wanted to have one to go to their prom senior year. His parents could not afford that, so they ended up renting a suit elsewhere. That didn’t stop Hayden from taking Josh to try them on and pretend. Just for a little while. Jacob’s words soaked in, and it wasn’t until the question at the end that his mind snapped back to him. He sniffed once, unaware that his eyes had gotten teary. He smiled, trying to play it off like it hadn’t happened. “Yeah, I think I’d like that.”

Josh didn’t say a word as he turned to finish the patrol. But he noticed that Soren never left his side. And that was appreciated more than he would ever say. Two years had seen them through a lot, and he’d gotten closer to Soren. The two of them were close and really, he was Josh’s best friend. Well. Best friend that wasn’t Hayden. No matter what happened, no matter how many arguments they had, Josh still loved Hayden. He did this, the Zone and becoming an officer for him. But, after Kyra, he lost that connection somehow. Somewhere something broke. And he didn’t know how to fix it. So, he ran. He ran to FEDRA. He ran from Hayden. Josh blinked as they arrived at the checkpoint. “Alright. How was everyone’s routes?” Josh asked as he looked at the rest of the group.

Kaiden ran with Theo, giggling and laughing. He weaved as he ran. His eyes bright and happy. Jacob watched the two little ones and looked at the expansive hallways. He’d never really gone to the mall. It wasn’t.. anything that interested him. Jacob was pulled from his thoughts as he heard the sniffle. He put an arm around Hayden and smiled. “Then that’s exactly what we’re going to do.” He said. Kai let go of Theo’s hand and ran to the side into an old shop, out of sight of the others breaking one of Hayden’s rules, before bumping into someone’s leg. He looked up scared before a big smile broke onto his face. “Logan!”

Oher than the reports on the incident at the ration center, which they were already familiar with having been there, none of the rest of the group had a lot to say. A couple of men said that they had some other angry people that they had to discourage. One man kind of shied away but eventually Soren convinced him to say that one of the arguments that the people were using was against the wedding. “They’re saying it’s just a big show to make us look like we’re these great people but really it’s just showing how we’re better than them.” Soren didn’t even understand that. He wanted this wedding to be a beacon of hope. That was why he wanted it where anyone could go. He wanted it out in the open. He wanted people to see something good. And now that was being used against him because he was an officer.

Hayden’s eyes slid to the arm around him, and he tried his hardest not to cry. He was getting better at pushing that away at least during the day. At least while they had Kai. He looked up to watch the little ones- little one. There was Theo. He was running around and around one of those giant pots in the center of the hallways that used to have these nice big plants. This one was dead now. It wilted. Inside, he bet they could find the decaying leaves all in it. Where was Kai? “Kai?” He picked up the pace, trying to find the little one. This was why he could not allow himself to get emotional. Every time he got distracted, he lost track of him. “Kaiden?” He heard the name, and his heart skipped a beat both out of relief of hearing him and also confusion. He raced into the old shop.

Josh listened to the report and hummed softly. “Right. Well. We can’t stop the wedding and we can’t change their views. But it’s good to know what we’d been trying to do, wasn’t working like we wanted.” Josh said as he nodded to all of them. “Let’s head back to the stadium, I want full reports from everyone so we can get the report to the General.” He said, looking at Soren before turning to lead the way to the stadium.

Jacob looked at Hayden, smiling at him softly. He knew this was hard on him. Knew that things were bad. He’d heard the arguments. But his arm dropped when he heard Hayden call for Kai. Where did the little one go? He walked to Theo so he could keep an eye on him. Kai was giggling as he jumped to his feet and Logan chuckled as he heard Hayden. He looked up, taking Kai’s hand and saw him race in. “Well hello Hayden.” Logan said, as Kai giggled. “Logan!” He said, jumping in place.

Stop the wedding. Interesting thing to even consider. Soren would never stop the wedding. He looked at Josh briefly, wondering what he was thinking. Such a pessimistic way of seeing things. Soren and the rest followed him back to the stadium. He did not have anything more to say right now. At least not about that. As they moved, he did talk with some of the other men. They talked about plans and ideas for the future. Several asked about the wedding. “Yes, we are making arrangements so that as many people who would like to go can go,” he assured them. Even he was getting tired of answering these questions. Two more days? That was too many days. At some point, he moved to stand by Josh, what he always wanted to do anyway, and hoped that being with him would deter others from asking any more questions.

“Logan?” That was a silly question. Hayden was not expecting anyone else to be there. It was open for anyone, so he should have expected someone else to be there. “What are you doing here?” He looked at Kai and wanted to scold him from running off, but it was too late. He could try to mention it later, though that may be too long for the young one’s mind. “Are you also searching for fancy suits?”

Josh wouldn’t stop the wedding, he wouldn’t do that to his brother and best friend. Even when he was his most cold, he wasn’t that mean. As they walked, he barely heard the men behind him. He did however register Soren beside him. His eyes slid to the man and a soft sigh came out. It was easier to keep going and be silent so he did. As they came to the stadium and were waved through, he led them to the debriefing room. Paper stacks were scattered on the tables with various writing tools. He’d get everyone’s report and then add his own when he was on his own. It was easier.

Logan looked at Hayden then at Kai. “Well. I like to browse the stores for anything that the soldiers forgot. My little apartment is kind of dreary still and my roommate left to move to a bigger apartment with his girlfriend. So I'm bored and searching for stuff. Are you looking for suits?” He asked, as Kai giggled and pulled away. He made to take off out of the store back to Theo.

The debriefing room was a bit of a disaster, and that was just how it was. There was no getting around it. “Alright alright. Get to work boys. The faster you get these things done, the faster you can go do other things.” He probably should have been more on top of it, checking in on everyone and everything, but the jitters were starting to get to him. He stood to the side, rolling his shoulders and stretching his neck. He tried to focus on doing actual things, though his mind kept wandering. It would. He also should have done his report. He would do that. Eventually. When his mind was in the right space for that. Maybe he could take a walk? No, that wasn’t likely to help. It was fine. He was fine.

Theo was eagerly bouncing outside with Jacob, waiting for something to happen, so when Kai came running, which he did with Hayden watching him go back to where Jacob was near, Theo tried to pull away to run after him. Hayden, seeing that Kai was at least somewhere that one of them could see, turned back to Logan. “I don’t blame you. Our apartment is not the nicest either. It gets a little bland sometimes. I don’t blame you for looking.” He spun around to check on Kai again before looking back at Logan. “We’re, um, yeah, we’re looking for suits for the adults and the littles for the wedding. We thought there might still be some in here since the soldiers didn’t care about those when they cleared this out. Want to raid a suit shop with us?”

He walked around the room, checking in with everyone and making sure they were good. He looked over to see Soren standing on the side, watched him roll his shoulders and stretch his neck. He was usually right with Josh in checking on everyone. He completed his round and walked over to Soren, standing beside him. “You all good?” He asked, looking at Soren. “We can take a walk somewhere outside of the stadium when everyone is done if you’d like.”

Kai giggled as he came to Theo and Jacob. When the three year old pulled, he let him go but kept an eye on them. “Tag!” Kai giggled as he tagged Theo and started running down the hall. “Stay close!” Jacob called and Kai skidded to a halt, almost fell, and turned around. Logan nodded, listening to Hayden. He wished he’d been able to get some of his things but his apartment building had been over run with infected and it was too far from the Zone. He grinned, hearing that and nodded. “I’d love to. I need a new suit too. Since I didn’t have one.” He said with a chuckle, walking past Hayden so they could check out these suit shops.

Soren was doing a whole lot of not actually noticing anyone else when Josh came by. He was a little caught off guard. He nearly laughed. He scanned the room to make sure everyone was good, not that he had been doing that at all to that point, and then stood up straighter. “Are you looking after me now, Josh? That is so kind of you.” He sighed. “I would tell you that I am in fact all good, and then you and I would both know that’s a lie. I am okay. I promise.” Or at least he would be okay.

Theo ran after Kai, and because he had to stop and turn around, he was able to touch Kai’s arm and then turn and run hopefully behind Jacob. “Tag!” Hayden moved outside that store and into the hallway with Logan. He chuckled as well. “And we should take a look to see if there’s anything else you may want. I hate for you to be living in a boring apartment.” He made his way back to Jacob, dodging out of the way of a running toddler, and kept moving down, looking for one of the stores.

Josh looked at Soren as he saw him scan the room. "Of course. What's a best friend for?" Josh asked as he shifted in place, hearing his words. "I wish I could help you.." Josh admitted as he heard him say he was okay, even though he knew that he wasn't. A few minutes passed by and one by one the men finished and handed their reports to either Josh or Soren. "Well, let's get this report taken care of and go from there?"

Kai felt the touch to his arm and shrieked as he laughed. He ran towards him as Jacob watched Theo run behind him. He stepped to the side, exposing Theo to Kai as the four year old barreled towards him. Logan looked at his brother as he came out with Hayden. "Thanks, I appreciate that a lot. Should we go for the suits first and then explore as we go?" Logan suggested as Kai ran past him to get to Theo.

Best friend. Soren grinned at that. Sure, he said it earlier, but it was nice to hear it from someone else. Someone like Josh who was definitely his best friend, outside of Jacob of course. He nodded and moved back to actually being a commander who could help people and make sure they were doing what they needed to do. “Ah, so we can do it together then?” He grinned as he picked up the piles of paper to compile the report. Besides, he would rather do that right now than anything else. He needed something to take his mind off of everything that was stressful.

Hayden nodded. “That sounds like a great idea. That way we can leave with the things we need and don’t get too carried away.” He shrugged. “Of course, we can always come back for more. And they may even have boxes and carts we can use.” Theo dashed around one of those middle benches and then climbed up in an attempt to get away. He teetered on the edge as his little legs tried to figure out how to keep the balance.

Josh looked at Soren as he grinned a little bit as he nodded. “You talked me into it.” He admitted as he watched him grab the papers. Josh turned to lead the way out of the room, and down to the Commander’s room. “We can compile this report, along with doing our own reports, then maybe take a walk outside, maybe in the civilian area? Get away from all these officers.” He said with a soft chuckle.

Logan and Jacob both nodded as they watched the littles. Kai was trying to climb up on one of those benches to get to Theo. He climbed up, and he followed after him. Kai was determined to get to Theo. “I think the suit shop was up on the next floor.” He said as he led the way to the escalator that no longer worked.

Soren grinned at that as well as he followed Josh out and to the Commanders room. There were a handful of other people in there also compiling reports and performing their duties, though they weren’t the kinds who would bother them. Or at least not usually. He moved to the desk and set the pile down. “How do you want to do this? Are you wanting the quiet way where you take half and I take half and then come back together or would you like one of us to read them to each other.” A dramatic reading of some of these was always entertaining.

Theo looked back and squealed as he ran across the top of the bench. He was not that balanced and tumbled straight off the edge. He landed with a thump and laid there dazed for about three seconds, considered crying, and then decided to get up and run instead. Hayden nodded. “Right, that does sound right. Boys, up the stairs! Up up up!” He pointed to the escalator. Just like stairs. “With one of us.”

Josh looked at the others and thought for a moment. He wanted to get things done and maybe go somewhere to get his mind off this. “We’ll split it in half and get it done quickly and quietly. Though if there are any really funny ones, feel free to read them aloud.” Josh said as he took the pile, split it in half and handed one set to Soren as he sat down at the desk.

Kai saw Theo tumble off the bench and he paused, slipping off himself. But then he saw Theo run and he ran after him. When he heard Hayden, he giggled. “Theo!” He called and ran for the escalator. Jacob looked at the two boys and snagged Theo’s hand so that the three year old couldn’t go upstairs without him. Kaiden tried to go up the stairs without anyone.

Soren agreed that it would be fastest that way. He stood next to the table, leaning against it, and reading through the reports. They were mostly boring this time. They were average honestly. Nothing interesting. “I’m disappointed in our men. They seem to have figured out how to actually put together one of these.” He sighed, though it did make things easier.

Theo tried to get as far as he could. Inevitably, Jacob caught his hand. He looked back with a cry of frustration. “Up up up!” Hayden knew that Kai was about to run up on his own. He could see it coming. He could feel it. Without a second’s thought, he dashed forward to catch up with him. He was pretty good at moving with this little one. When Theo wasn’t around, he was the one who played tag with Kai. He rolled around on the floor, bounced everywhere, and wrestled with him. He could toss the little one around and all sorts of things. If only that would last forever. For now though, he was right up there with Kai, a step behind him. If he was going to go, he might as well go up with Hayden. “Let’s go, little man. You and me.”

Josh read through each one, and they really were boring. Nothing interesting or funny in any of them. He sighed as he grabbed a piece of paper to start writing his own. He looked up and Soren and snorted a laugh. “Yeah. They did their jobs correctly. What a shame.” He said with a shake of his head while he wrote down every detail of his own. It didn’t take him long, he’d done so many at this point, and fights were getting more and more common. When he finished, he put his on top of his pile and sighed roughly.

Jacob heard the cry of frustration and chuckled softly, shaking his head. “Come on buddy.” He said, as he walked quickly with the excited toddler. Kai meanwhile had just put his first foot on the escalator when he heard Hayden behind him and then he caught up. He loved spending time with Hayden, and he looked back at him excitedly. “Up! Up!” He chanted as he giggled and started running up the stairs, stopping every so often to look back at Hayden. Logan followed the four of them with a small smile on his face.
