Personality: Soren is fiercely protective of their friends and family; they are also loyal and once they decide they like somebody, they'll defend that person no matter what. They are impulsive and prone to acting before thinking, which has gotten them into a lot of trouble in the past. Even though they are brave, they can also be stupid and put themselves or others into danger without realising. The definition of hot-tempered, Soren has trouble controlling their anger and will lash out if irritated. However, Soren is also caring and capable of taking care of others when they are injured and ill. They can be compassionate and emotionally smart, as they are a deeply emotional person under their tough facade. Despite having friends, Soren feels very alone sometimes as they don't feel that they connect with people very well. They are nearly always trying to prove themself to others, even if they don't realise it.
Biography: Soren's father left when they were seven or eight and since then, they have been responsible for caring for their depressed mother at home. This has always put a lot of strain on Soren and meant that they have become a bit of a loner, due to most of their time being spent at home. It also means they have lacking social skills due to a lack of true parental figures. Soren has never made any attempt to contact their father and have no interest in him. In school, Soren developed a reputation as being somebody that shouldn't be messed with due to their quick temper and ability in physical fights. As a result, they ended up being considered a loser and an outcast by their peers. They did not have any friends until middle school, where they befriended fellow outcast Kiane Crawley, and then Lydia Nyugen in high school. The three formed an alliance as self-proclaimed 'losers'.
Soren is one of the primary protagonists of The Curiosity Shop as well as being the narrator.
Personality: Ruby is an intellectual college student, who lives next door to Soren. She lives a double life; she spends most of her time with groups of girls she barely knows trying to please them and getting drunk at parties. But in truth, there's more to her than that. Ruby is bright, loves to read and write fantasy stories, and has a fascination with the occult. She's always been interested in the supernatural and was once told that she had a sort of sixth sense when it came to such things. Ruby has a close relationship with her mom, due to her dad dying when she was younger, and always tries to make her happy. She enjoys college but enjoys being at home more, where she can be her true self. She spends a lot of time in second-hand stores and coffee shops, when she isn't doing her homework, which is how she came across The Curiosity Shop. Ruby's dad died in a car crash so she is anxious around cars and public transport.
Tries Too Hard
Biography: Ruby was very close with her dad until he died and he impacted her taste in books, music, and movies. She found his death very difficult to come to terms with. After her dad died, she moved with her mom so that they could have a fresh start. Ruby graduated school with high grades but decided to go to a local college instead so that she could live at home. She lied her way into a group of friends in high school and has stayed friends with the group in college, despite having nothing in common with them. Ruby was considered to be a 'girl next door' by several people but she just found the label amusing. She was the one that discovered The Curiosity Shop.
Personality: Lydia is a no-nonsense, honest, and smart-mouthed girl who refuses to take shit from anybody. She is more than capable of fighting her own battles and she makes sure that everybody knows it; there's no way she's waiting around for some useless boy to rescue her. Lydia is a rich kid that rejects her home life and hates to be reminded of her privileged background. She prefers to spend her time with Soren and Kiane, who she became friends with in freshman year, and has little interest in befriending girls as far as anyone can tell. Lydia is smart but refuses to apply herself, which frustrates her parents. She enjoys pissing people off and has a snarky remark to make about nearly everybody that has ever crossed her path. Is Lydia an inherently bad person? Who knows? It's definitely up for debate....
Personality: Kiane is a quiet, usually unnoticed boy who tends to keep to himself. He hates being the center of attention, especially when it comes to his peers, due to being bullied in the past. Aside from that, Kiane is a thoughtful and considerate person who spends a lot of time thinking before speaking. He can be good in a crisis as he very rarely loses his cool and is rarely seen angry or upset. He has an addictive personality and has been hooked on nicotine since the age of fourteen. He has also struggles with anorexia nervosa but again, it's something that he'd rather not talk about. Kiane can be very open when spoken to, as well as being very open-minded about others, and his friends often find him a very comforting presence. He is an excellent driver, enjoys old music, and usually seems content. He often fantasises about starting a new life somewhere far away and remote.
Biography: Originally from England, Kiane moved to the USA with his family when he was in middle school. He was bullied in school but found a friend in Soren quickly- especially after Soren kicked the main bully's ass. Despite seeming reasonably happy, Kiane has struggled with eating disorders and body dysphoria for most of his teen years. Kiane learned to drive at a young age from his older brother and has been fondly nicknamed "designated driver" by his peers ever since. He became friends with Lydia Nyugen in high school after he started giving her and Soren rides to school.
Personality: Flossie is an empath, which means that she can feel what those around her can feel. This means that she is incredibly sensitive, friendly, and understanding but also prone to being overwhelmed. She also experiences dramatic mood swings based on the atmosphere in the room. She was homeschooled for most of her life, due to her empathy making it hard to be around others, and is a little wacky as a result. She often appears absent-minded, a little slow, a little unaware, and only tends to see the beauty in things. Flossie speaks excitedly most of the time with odd inflections in her speech and comes across a little strong upon first meeting people. As a result, she's a bit isolated and lonely and lost in the world of high school.
Biography: Flossie was born with the ability to experience other's emotions and although it can be enjoyable, it can also be overwhelming and difficult to cope with. Especially when she was younger, she was prone to getting upset or angry when other people were and was quickly pulled out of school by her parents as a result. She was homeschooled by her parents- both highly powerful, influential, intellectuals- prior to high school. Flossie struggles academically and socially in school but she cares more about staying true to herself.
Personality: Natasha is passionate about her special interests and will tell anybody who is willing to listen about them. She likes rules, routine, and order- she can get very upset when her usual routine is disturbed. She never gets into trouble intentionally. Natasha is kind-hearted, despite her confusion when it comes to understanding other people, and will try to help if she thinks somebody needs help. She has a few friends among other nerds at the school, including the members of her Star Trek fan club, and isn't a loner- Natasha is actually quite well liked by a lot of people for her intellect, kindness, and detailed study notes that she lends out to anybody who asks. Though she will join in conversations, she rarely initiates them and can come across as "socially awkward" because she doesn't make eye contact and can misunderstand jokes or sarcasm.
Biography: Natasha has been an avid Star Trek watcher ever since she was young and it has greatly influenced her to pursue a career at NASA. Once she's done with college, of course. Like Ruby, she went to a local college because she didn't want to move away from home. Natasha uses female pronouns but identifies as genderfluid.
Personality: Evie is a distant person that gets lost in her own head sometimes and is prone to getting caught up in her own thoughts- she can seem disconnected with reality to an extent. She is also prone to feeling anxious and frightened, usually by her own intrusive and obsessive thoughts. Aside from her disorder, Evie is a friendly and caring person, who cares deeply about protecting other people. She likes to look and feel beautiful. Evie loves her family and friends and expresses this openly with words and physical affection, (she's a hugger). She tries to get along with everyone and will always try to resolve an argument or a disagreement- she can also be defensive of people she likes, even when they make bad decisions. Although Evie's paranoia isn't usually visible, she can sometimes babble about it when she's very upset and her compulsions can be obvious to people who are playing close attention. Evie doesn't like to be left alone, as that's when the instrusive thoughts are loudest.
Biography: Before Evie turned ten, she started experiencing obsessive and intrusive thoughts about death and about dying. These thoughts interfered with her daily life at first and then slowly took her over. By the time she was twelve, Evie was showing sure signs of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Her compulsions included having to perform counting rituals in order to enter certain rooms or cross certain roads or go to certain places. There were certain places in the city that she refused to step foot in altogether, places she called "hot spots", which meant that Evie had to work out elaborate routes to get anywhere. And all the time, her obsessive thoughts did not go away. Compulsions were temporary relief, short-term solutions, and seeing a decent therapist was too expensive. Her OCD continued throughout her teenage years and still does to this day.
