The Colosseum

One Thousand Club
Near to the Everfree Forest was an ancient structure created by the wizards of old. It was simply known as 'The Colosseum' and was imbued with powerful magic. It had been created as a place where soldiers could train in combat against foes, without the fear of death. It helped to hone one's reflexes, and combat skill. Using an incredibly advanced form of illusion magic, this Colosseum could conjure up beasts which, while not physically able to hurt the soldier, could inflict psychic wounds on the mind.

A scratch from an illusionary manticore felt and looked like a real scratch, until the illusion went away. Illusion's would disappear should a targets vitals appear to be getting dangerously low, at which point any psychic damage done would be reversed.

Since its creation, The Colosseum had been maintained by Princess Luna and a few powerful wizards. Many adventurers and soldiers came here to test their mettle. During the 1000 year absence of Princess Luna, The Colosseum had fallen into disrepair. Princess Celestia hadn't the time to keep it up to date, and not many wizards existed which were powerful enough to charge The Colosseum to necessary levels of magic to keep it functioning. It had stayed unusable for 1000 years.

Now it was back, and once again open to adventurers of all types.

A sign hanging over the metal gate read, "Come and test thy mettle!"

As per Princess Luna's instruction, Expellix was to make his way to The Colosseum and hone his skills. She assured him that no matter what happened here, what wounds he sustained, they would all be washed away after the fighting. This was a magical place, heavily enchanted and run autonomously with magical servants. As he approached the gate to The Colosseum, it swung open as if expecting him. Once he stepped through, the gate swung closed behind him.

"... What challenge do you wish to face today?" A ghostly voice whispered into his head, waiting patiently for an answer.

Expellix wasn't sure what to think when he was told to come here. It was strange because even though he was so old, he had no idea this existed. Then again, perhaps not many would. If it was at least good for training he may be coming here quite often. No sustained injuries would be kept after fighting? That was a major plus in his book, why wouldn't he take the opportunity? You would have to be a fool.

Approaching the metal gate, he paused. What did he want to face? "Uh... something my level?" He said hesitantly.

You could almost liken this whole place to a giant video game, programmed by Luna. The challenger would approach, declare their desire, and then be pitted against whatever it was that they wanted to face. It had originally been built as a way for Luna, and to a lesser degree Celestia, to hone their skills against things their level. Luna had long since stopped using it, but it still remained open to the general public. Perhaps with enough interest, it would flourish like it had thousands of years ago.

"... Your will be done, champion." The voice said, before vanishing from his mind. A blue energy barrier surrounded the arena pit, roughly 100 feet high at the highest point to dissuade pegasi from flying away.

Across the arena, a unicorn appeared. She shimmered into existence in a brilliant blue light, almost like watching one of those new 'Game Foals' boot up a game, and then stood there blankly. No real personality to speak of. She had leather armor on, and a bow with a quiver across her shoulder.

She snapped into action, drawing an arrow and launching it at Expellix's position.

Expellix didn't know what a video was, much less a video game. If he was given the comparison, he wouldn't have any idea what to make of it. Being completely isolated from everybody for the past 1,500 years of his life, that made it quite simple to be totally ignorant of every aspect of the developments made. He'd only recently been getting started with real combat and magical training, courtesy of Princess Luna.

With the voice and the magic running across the arena, he stared the unicorn down. Frowning, he summoned Insight and Judgment to his paws, his telekinetic white glow surrounding them as he used that to support the weight. Looks like combat began now.

Expellix easily knocked the arrow to the sight with one of his axes. While he could hit the hologram with his axes, instead he just fired a simple magic arrow at the mare.

The mare leaped to the side as the arrow soared in towards her, but not quite quickly enough. Although it didn't stick in her flesh, the magical arrow cut cleanly across her upper back left leg and left a trail of blood seeping down. Angered by the pain (which she couldn't actually feel), the unicorn disappeared in a flash of magic and reappeared right above Expellix's position, bringing the wood of her bow hard down on the stupid rabbits head.

... Her bow broke in half as it hit the ground, and gave Expellix an opportunity to strike back even more-so than usual.

Expellix snickered slightly at hitting the mare. Knowing this was a hologram and not a real pony, he felt free to do so. Being in the middle of combat didn't mean he wasn't allowed to feel good about getting a hit! When she teleported, he heard the sound above him and hopped to the left, right in time for her bow to snap on the ground. Seeing how she was weaponless now, he took this opportunity to strike.

The hologram fell back for a moment, barely bleeding at all from the last strike but bleeding considerably from the slash of Judgement. Disengaging for a brief second, the unicorn held out one hoof and a shimmering of light appeared there, before coalescing into a long-sword. Obviously the Colosseum wasn't going to make this east at all. It wouldn't allow the fight to continue without a weapon of some sort.

With her new longsword, the holographic mare lunged at Expellix with the point out, hoping to catch him off-guard with the new weapon of hers. She was injured, but certainly not out of the fight.

Expellix smirked from the hit, even if Insight didn't do much. Judgment was certainly living up to its name at the moment. Insight... was just opening up holes in their defense. It really hadn't do much in damage yet, but then again, it didn't exactly need to just yet. This fight was going splendidly so far. He was a little bit surprised at a longsword suddenly appearing in her hoof.

When she lunged at him, he parried it to the side with Insight and came down on her once more with Judgment.

The unicorn was finding her ground in the fight now. As Judgement came crashing down on her, she instead parried it off to the side, harmlessly away from her body, and brought her own blade swinging across at Expellix's chest.

Expellix was knocked off-balance from the parry. He wasn't exactly a master at using these things yet, and holding it in his paw made it easy for the mare to do that to him. He was not large, therefore, so much force behind the swing without it landing would certainly mean ill things for him. He barely managed to turn around when she was attacking again. He rolled out of the way, but the sword still made a scathing cut across his side, sending his blood scattering across the arena floor.

Angered by the hit, he lashed out quickly coming out of the roll to try and catch the mare as she was recovering from the hit with Insight.

The mare raised her blade to block the incoming axe, but the enchanted Insight being magically swung was too much for her block to handle. Her sword was flung out of the way, and the axe cut deeply into her chest as she jumped back out of the way, bleeding against and grimacing this time. Without any sort of hesitation at all, knowing this was coming down to the wire for both of them, she flung herself at Expellix with a wild overhead slash.

Expellix narrowed his eyes as his axe completely smashed through her defense. It was certainly more than tough enough to take just about any hit that could be thrown at it. Even then, his magic more than made up the difference to swing it with the strength of an earth pony, not to mention being much more versatile as well. He didn't technically have to be holding the axe, but it was far easier for him to do so due to actually using his body for it. It helped him focus much better.

With her large overhead swing, he brought both axes up. He stepped the swing, instead letting his slide along the underside of both axes, preventing it from getting in on him. He charged a magical blast in his palm, aiming it at her chest and letting it fire.

With the Coliseum beginning to shut down for the day, the two rulers of Equestria silently made their way into it once the crowds had left. They didn't really like putting on a show for the mortals, since most mortals ended up terrified of them afterwards. For that reason, they waited for it to shut down and then used it for themselves.

Luna stood in the arena, across from Celestia. At the moment she had her staff shifted into its bow form. It was incredibly ineffective against Celestia, but she was really hoping just to start the fight by managing to blind Celestia with her lightning arrows. It was unlikely, but her best opening strategy.

With a shine of her horn, Luna sent a magical ball out into the air which hovered there for a moment. "When the orb bursts, we start." Luna said calmly, while knocking an arrow to her bow. Luna waited for the orb to burst, since she had no control over it...

After several long seconds, it burst.

Celestia had been very happy to get another chance to spar, considering some time had passed, and it helped them both to stay in fighting shape. Though it was mostly for Celestia considering Luna went out to fight monsters usually, so she was always battle ready!

Celestia would look around the arena, and nod her head slowly, happy that everyone was gone. It was bad for the people if both of the rulers seemed to be trying to kill each other with all out powers. She'd take in a deep breathe and look at Luna. Celestia looked a little smug, which would probably not go well for her, acting confident against someone who literally was at war for most their life.

"It's your move." She'd say, smiling at Luna. She knew Luna was stronger, so she needed to have a good battle plan set up for this fight, which would be very much an intense battle most likely. Taking one last look around the arena, she'd breathe out, before bowing her head, and rose back up to her full height.

Luna didn't even bat an eye at Celestia's words, instead simply muttering, "That's your mistake." before going on the offensive. Luna's first arrow was quickly drawn back and fired, letting off a blast of electricity that shot towards Celestia. Luckily there was no thunderous boom, otherwise Luna might temporarily deafen herself.

Two more lightning arrows were in the air before the first one had even reached Celestia. Luna wasted no time in twirling her bow after the final arrow had been loosed, shifting it into a spear and shield. She was more suited to melee combat, but had grown to enjoy ranged combat in the later years of her life. Her ancestors would have abhorred her for that.
