The City of Spirits

Howdy! Welcome to the official OOC for The City of Spirits!

You either are a new player who saw the tags and got interested, one of the people I got from the Recruitment Page, or just a friend of mine I might or might not have invited.

Here, we'll be discussing most OOC content, (unless a discord is asked by the majority of players) as well as asking me any questions for lore, or help for making a character.

There aren't any particular rules for the roleplay-- aside from obvious ones such as being nice, not posting NSFW content, or using clearly canon characters from other media.

Here, I'll be posting my own sheet example, so you guys can have a proper idea of what to do. I'll also be constantly updating lore here-- or at least try to. It's likely I'll forget about it, sometime in the future.

The beginning of the roleplay will take place in Himawari High, one of Kyoto's many schools. Known for its good students, low delinquency rate, and competent teachers. Occasionally though, the occasional delinquent or two appears to ruin the school's reputation-- the most noteworthy one being one named 'The Oni of Himawari High', making so the school has been put in a bad light, and the occasional oddball students also don't seem to help. All in all, it seems to be a normal day in school-- the first day being meant to introduce your character and show their relationships with one another, before jumping into action.

Moments and days of pure fluff will happen in the RP, mostly to make so PC's have a break from all the story and fighting. After all, railroading isn't fun, is it?

Name:

The name of your character. Foreign names are allowed, but I would like to avoid an extremely large group of characters being foreigners!

Age:

Your character age. I don't really have a problem with age, generally, but try and not make your character 5 years old, aye?

Gender:

Male or Female?

Occupation:

Student, teacher, parent, or something else, and how do they tie into the plot with other characters?

Other Names/Nicknames:

What is your character known as by their peers or friends?

Species:

What species is your character? Human or Youkai? (If your character is a Youkai, what sort are they? And do they know about it if they're half youkai?) Humans and Youkai both have their disadvantages and advantages, so pick wisely!

Weight/Height:

For combat/fluff purposes IC.

Backstory:

The known backstory of your character. Anything you feel like would need to be secretive, or any ideas you have for your character, let me know in DM's! Likewise, as I said before, it's recommended for you to create ties between your characters and other players!

Personality:

Go into detail here. Believe me, it's important!

Skills:

What is your character good at? Similarly, what is he bad at? Please don't just put things like 'speed', 'strength', or similar one-liners. It doesn't give me much to work with. If possible, please do be specific about what your character's strengths/weaknesses are.

Appearance:

Self-explanatory. Descriptions and images are both fine.

Knowledge on the World of Fantasy:

How much does your character know about the lore of the world? Do they know more than others, nothing at all, or are they mixed? This is mostly so I can tell players in DM's info other players might not know, to avoid metagaming.

What is...your word?:

Your character's motto. Their go-to words when things start going bad. It's what they believe in-- what they go through. This is what essentially makes your character, so pick wisely.

Theme Song?:

Completely optional. Mostly for fluff purposes.

Alignment:

Are you a kind human/youkai or a bad human/youkai? Despite alignments being a thing, try and not make your characters complete monsters/unlikable dicks. Make them have some redeeming qualities, at the very least.

IC Thread:

Kyou Tana. (FILTHY GMPC)

Who cares if yer a human or not, 'till the end, we are all sentient beings, oi.

Name:

Kyou Tana. (Desu yo!)

Age:

17 years old, 3rd year of Highschool.

Gender:

A guy!

Occupation:

Delinquent Student of Himawari High, Balance Breaker.

Other Names/Nicknames:

Oni of Himawari, Red Teeth, King Violence, Half-Brain, among some other...Not-so-friendly nicknames.

Species:

Half-Oni.

Weight/Height:

Height:

6'01"

Weight:

76 KG.

Backstory:

Demon, Demon, demon, oni!

That's how many have come to know Kyou Tana on the grounds of Himawari High. From his incredible stature to his strong body and sharp canine teeth, Kyou Tana is mockingly known a the 'King of Delinquents' in Himawari High. Of course, such title comes with no power, aside from others being constantly afraid of him, or other strong people from other schools wanting to challenge him to street fights.

Very few know what caused Kyou to gain this title, or rather, his origins to be able to discern it. All they know is-- Kyou Tana is a dangerous student to deal with it. With enough power in his punch to break a jaw, survive blows from baseball bats, or even being able to stand up when he is not able to- Kyou Tana is a monster in every right. As such, his reputation of one keeps circling-- with more violence, comes more rumors. With more rumors, comes more fear. With more fear, comes more violence.

"What a load of bullshit. I'm not some evil demon you can just beat."

Despite this, Kyou doesn't-- or at least tries to not to fall under the mask and 'fantasy' others put him on. Kyou can be terrifying, but he can be compassionate. One might find themselves being protected by Kyou when they most need it. Either an act of kindness, rebellion, or perhaps both. Those lucky, or perhaps unlucky enough to be saved, or be in a direct fight with Kyou often know the full extent of his strength. An absolute monster, with almost no problems overpowering an adult who should, by all means, be stronger than him, or even multiple people.

This stress and occasional fights make Kyou an extremely subpar student in the day to day life he lives in. While he's not terrible in all subjects, a possible serious lack of sleep and overall lack of time due to his activities lead Kyou's grades to often not be great or even miss some assignments. The times that this happens are few, not happening constant, but it's not exactly rare, either. But even so, even despite this, the cycle of violence Kyou lives on keeps spinning due to rumors and mockery behind his back due to this.

All some know about Kyou is that he's a possible orphan, living alongside his grandpa in the more market area of Kyoto. Rumors of abuse or that his grandfather mistreats him came-- those who were quickly shut by Kyou nearly breaking their faces. Despite this...The lack of sleep and overall tiredness shows that something else occurs in Kyou's life, often leading to ridiculous, yet more often than not, non-serious rumors that don't lead anywhere.

Personality:

"I'm...Kyou Tana, y'hear?!"

Fire. That's what many can compare Kyou to. A fiery delinquent who doesn't back down from a fight, or doesn't seem to have any self-care for himself, be it due to his delinquency streak, or due to the number of fights, he got into to protect something-- an ideal of his, or someone who's completely unrelated. One who fights, who saw Kyou fight can only see the man gritting his teeth in a grin that's extremely unsettling for most who aren't used to this sort of violence.

Despite this, these 'flames' seem to die out when not in a fight. Kyou can often see ass cold, uninterested, and sometimes even annoyed when interacting with other people. By no means is he rude, unless said person deserves it. But Kyou can often seem...Apathetic, or simply not interested enough in people to get into deep conversations with them. Often looking away, almost as if his eyes can't focus on that one person talking to him.

But, those who somehow manage to push past Kyou's ignorance, a little ignition can be seen from him towards those people. Simple conversations aren't as rare, and that same grin, now in a different light can appear.

It's only a matter of who follows him or not. So far, none have.

Skills:

Hand to Hand Combat:
Kyou is an extremely talented fighter. His skills by many can be unmatched, having enough reflexes not to get decked into the face instantly by a trashcan. Even with some slow movements, Kyou has experience in his own style of fighting, swiping and thrusting his fists towards his foes with notable accuracy.

Strength: Kyou's strength is also something to note, his body can be subjugated to attacks of nearly all sorts, (at least in the eyes of a teen) and he'll still keep going. Perhaps this is simply his Stamina working together with him, but Kyou's strength is able to easily knock down a person with a single punch if he distributes enough weight and momentum, often breaking something in the process. A slow slugger, yet one who you don't want to get your face connected to his fist.

Unnatural Size: Kyou is taller than most students, and thanks to his more athletic body, it's easy for him to give off an unsettling aura of danger to those who see him. It's more the work of his rumors circling around him and forming this 'barrier' of fear around him, complimenting his size and appearance perfectly.

Appearance:

XAQhlwW.jpg

(Half-Oni form, not made by me!)

xzrzlH1.png

Knowledge on the World of Fantasy:

For Kyou, stories of Youkai and monsters with eyes on their butts are simply something to put children to bed. Interesting legends, such as man-eating Onis often lead him to roll his eyes, despite the uniqueness of it. The stories of Momotaro, Minamoto no Raikou, Yamata No Orochi, and other legendary figures, while interesting to him, never truly made him believe they were real, as such, acting with no knowledge on the Fantasy World.

What is...your word?:

Knowlege on the world of fantasy
With a focus on teaching Mythological Studies and an interest to match, Miko is always interested in taking a red marker to the history of myth as humanity has written it.

Personality
A Queen that sits upon a throne of dirt goes uncontested. So pitiful is the Queen who feels content to pretend with a haughty attitude. Such a woman walks upon the stage in the dim spotlight of the aftermath, at best forming a vague understanding of what it feels like to take the lead. To steal the show. Yet the ego of such a Queen, who walks that empty stage with pride, goes uncontested. She plays the role well enough. In her mind turning ketchup stained clothes to red ballgowns and a still yet paid for apartment into a kingdom. For a Queen such as her is willing to cross the line turning optimism to disillusion. And yet, she does so bombastically, as a Queen should.

Roll in the filth, revel in the lordship over salt, for even dominion over worms is something to be proud of. It is on this point a Queen shall not be contested. Outrageous by design, loud by nature, and willful by nurture. For it is the Queen that does not hesitate to sit upon the throne of dirt or salt or gold alike that is worthy of being called such. For it is by Her eyes that all the world is made a kingdom, and that which draws life upon it her vassals. So save your pity for the Queen who doesn't understand her place, for she is more than content to thrive with a haughty attitude. After all, a Queen must be willing to smile, lead, pray, thrive, and make their kingdom even upon a fake throne of dirt "As a Queen damn well should!"

~Regicide - What's Yours is Mine~
A tricky ability for an Oni. Uses Miko's dull blade. By chanting an incantation of desire on the sheathed blade it turns into a blade a brilliant golden light. Such a blade, when used against another, allows Miko to steal an aspect of them and make it her own. Be it their voice, sight, strength or weakness. Physical or conceptual, it becomes Miko's. However, this act is not a trade. It is theft, becoming a part of Miko until it is overwritten by a conflicting stolen aspect, while the one stolen from is left with nothing in the aspect's place. Such an ability requires Miko to thrust the blade into the heart of their desire. Upon pulling the blade out no physical damage is left on the target, and the theft is complete.

However. A secondary circumstance stops such petty theft. The blade has been locked to its scabbard, and the key, given willingly to Miko's greatest enemies.

~World Breaker - A Queen's Providence~
Miko is an oni of considerable strength. With physical might that goes beyond what can be considered natural for a myth. Miko's power is that of a conqueror, a juggernaut that threatens to break the ground bellow with hands clenched. Such power is magical in nature, but not perfect. By discharging more power than her body can handle Miko threatens to degrade her muscles. One could call this side effect the cause for her weak stature despite being a full-blooded oni. With enough degradation, Miko threatens to break her very bones.

Overwritten since stealing humanity.

~A Pauper's Presence~
A faint whisper of what used to be. Miko's newfound humanity isn't enough to overwrite her history, not completely at least. Miko's physical performance could be likened to that of a college-level athlete, despite not having the physique for it. Though her body isn't able to handle what it's capable of. When exerting herself her stamina is low for this reason.

Backstory
Is humanity something to be desired or detested? Maybe desiring humanity is a sign that one has already attained it. Though desire is not uniquely human, it is distinctly human. It's disgustingly human.

Miko fell in love with humanity. Time and again, cycle in and cycle out she found herself starstruck. There was something, heartwarming, in their pathetic nature. In her vague recollection of cycles past Miko remembers towers rising to touch the sky, only to crumble back to earth. Kingdoms and cities rise and fall, all their creations return. Dust to dust, earth to earth, and yet they build again. And every time they built again, Miko would be there to read the stories or look back on her own recollection. From afar, she fell in love with humanity. Yet, as time flowed into the modern age, Miko had to watch from further and further away.

Her days were up, the days of myth were dying, and so Miko accepted that fate. She died with her age, and was content watching from beyond the mortal coil. At least, for a time. But as the new became the neo, Miko, enthralled by the towers that touched even higher desired to see it all again. Falling in love even harder. Though, it was hard to live in the new age. The age that started to reject beings like Miko. She had to hide. And so her love went noticed. Yet...

Something that came as a surprise, was a chance encounter with a young girl, a bombastic girl. A girl who encompasses everything about humanity that Miko had come to love. What more, after seeing Miko polishing her horns in the park, this girl accepted her. So their friendship began, and Miko's desire for a closer relationship with humanity grew. The two spent days together, and nights when they could. Dreaming together, of a world in which Miko could love humanity freely. Of a world where Miko could be human herself.

And one day it dawned on both of them. Their solution rested with ancient magics. The blade that Miko held on her person, one that she had heard stories of but never dared to open herself. The understanding of its purpose muddied with time, but Miko figured she knew enough of the old legends to understand how it works. So the human she loved offered herself up, to share her humanity with Miko. It was a day filled with elation. And when the night came, ushering in the ritual with a brilliant flash of gold, the elation was gone.

Her memories of the blade betrayed her. Humanity was not shared, it was stolen. Leaving the girl with nothing. For what remains within a human after their humanity is taken. Not even Miko knows. Failing to understand what stood before her in place of her friend. And so, Miko the human was born.

>Miko
>Touhou pic

Ya think I wouldn't notice, eh?

In all seriousness, it's a good character sheet. Normally I'd ask to change the name so it isn't too similar to Touhou, but it seems good. By the way, there's lore involving Oni's. I could PM it to you. Normally I'd say they aren't allowed (at least for a while) but your character can be an exception due to her backstory.

If you wish, I can PM you the details of Onikind. I'll do so to every Youkai a person chooses, unless they're a more unique/original Youkai.

Kihana Yōsai

Basic Information
Age: 22

Gender: Female

Occupation: One of the school's faculty. Girl's PE teacher, infrequent substitute. Finds students amusing.

Species: Youkai - Yaksha

Appearance: Stands at 5'9, and weighs 132 lbs. She doesn't have any particularly odd features when displaying herself as a Youkai, but she dons her kimono outfit when she does. At school, she most commonly wears a red tracksuit, the top half-zipped to air herself out. Has a dragon tattoo on her left shoulder, though she typically hides it from students.

Knowledge On World of Fantasy: While aware of the World of Fantasy, her knowledge is mostly based around the teaching of Buddhism. Knows very little about mythology, Youkai history, or current affairs.

Alignment: Lawful Neutral
Kihana The Yashka
Personality: In her day-to-day life, Kihana is simplistic and easygoing. Never one to be too bothered by stress or anxiety, her attitude is to handle things one at a time, to get through with it as she will. People find her as someone who is not easily shaken; and for it, reliable. But underlaying this is a...skewed set of morals, a different set of values. For many things, Kihana lacks a personal compassion. To her, life is not based on the subjective desires and pleasures of the beholder, but on a set of duties. A duty to her students; a duty for the greater good; a duty as a simple living being. However, this doesn't mean she holds the world as just a simple chore to be done. It doesn't leave her unable to care, unable to enjoy simple pleasures, unable to live like anybody else. It simply means that with everything else: her priorities, her actions, even her entire life's direction is based on not her own desires, but her own obligations.

The duty that lay above all else, of course, is her fealty to the Heavenly King Bishamonten. Going beyond even the simple nature of the Yaksha, Kihana finds her purpose in service for him. Her devotion is...scary, at times, even for a Youkai. The will of her Heavenly King is absolute. It must be carried out, no matter what it may be. For whatever it is, she has unwavering faith that it is right. Inside of Kihana is the resolution to do anything to fulfill her role as attendant, indiscriminate in the affairs of Youkai and human alike in order to see it through.

Kihana, ultimately, is not bad. Nor is she entirely good. She is simply someone with her own beliefs. Someone who is set on walking her path, whether it be alone or with someone else. To where? She'll have to find out.

Backstory: No matter what, the circle of Samsara goes on. You die, you are reborn. You die, you are reborn. Ad infinitum.

Of course, there are those who have escaped this cycle. But this is not the tale of someone who has escaped or of someone who seeks to. It is, instead, the tale of a Yaksha: nature spirits who are born attendants for their Heavenly King. For one particular Yaksha, to serve was their everything. To carry out the will of their Heavenly King, to attend to their needs, to struggle in their name. This particular Yaksha, who loved and served more than any other Yaksha, stood out amongst the rest. For why were they so heavily devoted? Did they not wish for more, to live for themselves as well? The answer was known to only the Yaksha, the questions falling deaf to their ears. And even in death did their devotion go on, and even past the circle of Samsara did it extend. So as their life met it's end, in the face of death, this Yaksha found peace. Peace in knowing they would once again fulfill their duty in another life. Peace that they would continue to attend to the venerated Heavenly King, now and forever...

You die, you are reborn. And so a new life begins.
That Yaksha was born once again as a Yaksha. But it was no longer in the world her past self had known of, had relished in. The world was moving on from the Youkai. They began to be lost either in the madness of their own stale existence or to the crumbling belief of Youkai that upheld their existence. The Kami died, and people lost hope. She was born into the Era of Dead Fantasy, the era of lost faith and vanishing belief. Still, yet...the Yaksha did not care. Her fellow attendants—the Nagas, the Gandharvas, the Kumbhandas— and the Yaksha themselves were left to the same fate as other Youkai. Still, yet, the Yaksha did not care. Holding not a single memory of her past life, of what the World of Fantasy once was, she did not care. Because in her new life, her devotion remained. It was unattached to the world, or to any external circumstance. Even in the Dead Fantasy Era, her devotion remained strong. Ingrained into her very being, an absolute not even she understood. But why would she need to?

It didn't matter how many Yaksha, how many attendants remained. For she remained. She served still. Gripping onto the remains of the World of Fantasy, she begged to fulfill her purpose once more. In the world of disbelief, her only wish was to serve once more. Silently, she pleaded...

"Bishamonten, my lord...the Yaksha are not yet gone, our duties not yet finished. Even if it is I alone...that will be enough, I swear it! So please, answer my calls!"

Kihana Yōsai's cries fell out to a deaf world. Patiently, she waits for an answer.
Combat Skills
Skills:
  • Silent Illumination: A meditative technique adapted for modern usage. The original form calls for a still, yet diligent sitting meditation. In it, the meditator soon ceases to focus on any single object, and instead "opens" their conscious; gaining an awareness of all phenomenon as a unified totality. The Yaksha's modern version allows her to stand up, but requires still a deep focus that can't be found in combat. When she enters this state of clarity, the Yaksha is able to see all around her, sensing the environment and all that's in it.
  • Mantra Invocation: It was once believed that a mantra was a sacred utterance that wielded magical powers. Though many have lost their power as their respective deity lost faith, she can still invoke few mantras for various magic effects. The Medicine Buddha's Mantra calls for the blessing of Bhaisajyaguru. A lapis-blue aura will envelop over an injury, alleviating it's pain and slowly healing the wound. The Avalokitesvara's Mantra calls for the protection of Avalokiteśvara. A golden-yellow aura will surround a person, acting as a temporary shield to protect the target.
  • Bō Staff Usage: As a basic weapon, she's skilled in the usage of the staff. She works with with typical wooden staffs, but she can very well improvise with other staff-esque versions of the weapon. It's used in particular in order to shy away from killing...though, if the situation was dire enough, she would trade the staff for a more modern weapon. Nevertheless, it's her arm of choice.

You already know it, but accepted!
