“the sunlight paints us gold.”

Returning to the academy always felt as if she was coming home in many ways, just as returning to France felt the same way once the semesters ended. And to think that in the past she had wanted nothing to do with this side of her lineage, that she had shunned everything that had anything to do with her father. Alina still held him accountable for his abandonment, for leaving her mother all alone in the delivery room and never once reaching out to them. But instead of the hate that she once felt Alina was merely indifferent when it came to her father, despite his status as a god, a divine being Alina only viewed him as the man who had abandoned the one he had supposedly loved.

She would admit that good things had come out of accepting this part of herself. She found a family of those like her, who also knew what it felt like to be abandoned. She had made friends and learned how to control her powers. Now no harm would come to her or her mother, any monster who dared cross her was dealt with swiftly. There was no more living in fear of an attack.

In the past the goodbye between her and her mother was always tear filled. Alina hated that she couldn’t tell the person she held dear about such a huge part of herself. She knew her mother worried for her. Having no idea where she was, only being able to contact one another through mail and seeing each other during breaks. But as they years passed and Alina grew into herself there were no more tears. Her mother knew that she would be able to handle herself and whatever came her way.

The young demigoddess smiled as she looked out at the calm sea, the motion of the waves soothing and bringing a sense of peace to her. Around her students both new and old chattered excitedly or nervously. Though that was perhaps due to the undead pirate crew that attended and steered the ship. She chuckled lightly as she watched some freshmen shuffle away from the figures, she remembered how unnerved she had been upon first seeing them. But oh they were in for far more once they reached Mythos.

It was a good feeling, knowing that she was finally headed back to her new home. The campus life was incomparable to any other schools in the U.S., or even the world for that matter. Cecilia had fallen in love with life at Mythos, and having to go back home to her bleak life in her mother's big, empty home back in New York was quite depressing. This moment had made an entire summer of waiting worthwhile. The smell of the ocean, of damp old wood, and the chatter of the new and old students alike, it was all so familiar yet felt so new once again. The Flying Dutchman was just one of the many wonders that a student would see as they arrive to Mythos. The crew moved about, pulling at the ropes of the ship's sails, and the captain steered with utmost precision. And beyond the ship, the morning sky was lined with streaks of thin clouds. This was the happiest she had felt since the beginning of summer.

After nearly a year of being away, Cecilia mulled over what her first break back home had been like. Learning the truth about her mother, her real mother, had completely shattered her world. The girl felt betrayed in every aspect of her family life. Her father was a lying cheat, a man who's expectations she could never meet, and her mother was removed and her strictest critic. Surprisingly enough, Cecilia had found some comfort in the company of her half-brother. She had sworn to hate Dietrich as a child, but now he was nearly eighteen, and they were able to settle their differences and lament together about the awfulness of their familial circumstances. It still hurt though, knowing that he could never discover the truth. But, no matter. Cecilia had found a new life for herself, and was thoroughly devoted to her studies. There was so much left to be done, so many things yet to discover. And plus, the random monster attacks were left behind. Hopefully.

The girl milled through the crowd, giving small greetings to friends from last semester, and entertaining the long glances of new students as well. At this, she would not snap. She knew what it was like, she had gone headfirst into the unknown only last year. The smell of the sea kept her grounded. In her backpack clinked a few bottles, meant for gathering some water that surrounded the campus' island as they approached closer. Pure ocean water from such a magical source could be boiled down into some pure, powerful sea salt. So many uses for the most mundane of things. Pulled out of her thoughts, Cecilia recognized a particular head of golden curls, and strode over to Alina's side to greet her. She smoothed out her skirt as she approached; the training of a prim, proper girl still had not left her.

"Hello, dear." Cecilia greeted politely. "How have you been? I hope your summer was better than mine."

Leia always found it to be bittersweet whenever it came time to return to Mythos. It feels exhilarating, in a sense, because she gets to see her friends again, but it also leaves a dull ache in her heart when she has to leave her family behind. What really gets to her is that she can’t tell them about this part of herself, especially after pestering her father about information regarding her mother for so long.

At first, Leia was terrified of her mother and the new life that came with her. She had spent years wondering what went wrong for her mother to abandon her, and then the woman suddenly appears and nearly suffocates her with plants in her own backyard. An experience like that is sure to inflict a little bit of trauma. Regardless, Leia couldn’t be more grateful for everything she has learned and experienced since taking the risk of attending Mythos.

Taking a moment to glance around the ship, Leia takes a deep breath before a gleaming smile makes its way across her face. Her heartbeat picks up in anticipation, adrenaline beginning to pump through her veins as she makes her rounds to various friends and acquaintances on deck. Naturally, she can’t let herself forget to greet the crew as she passes them as well. Despite the crew’s undead state, she knows they aren’t individuals to be afraid of.

The young daughter of Demeter continues to make her way around the ship, eventually finding herself a group of first-year students that continuously glanced toward the crew every so often. “Ah, I see what’s going on here,” she exclaimed as she tugged one of the boys by his wrist and wrapped her arm around his shoulder, “You’re scared of the crew, aren’t you? Dude, trust me, they are some of the nicest individuals you’ll ever meet. See that crew member over there? Yeah, they gave me chocolates on our way back from winter break last year. Go say hello, you’ll make their day!”

Giving the boy a gentle push and the other students an encouraging smile, Leia began to back away. Although she knew in the back of her mind that the ship was packed with students, she didn’t bother checking behind her before bumping into someone. “Whoa,” she regained her footing before turning to the person behind her, “Sorry, pal, didn’t see you there.”

While a new year for some people meant more structure, a new school year at Mythos Academy meant more freedom for Rhiannon. The demi-goddess loved her father, but he couldn't understand his daughter's sudden decision not to enlist in the military and enrolling in a foreign school instead. Though she could never tell her father the real reason she'd changed her mind so impulsively or the truth about her school, she tried her hardest to make her father understand that she was doing what was best for her, not what he thought was best for her.

Even before her sudden departure to Mythos, her father had never been an affectionate man. Since choosing to attend college the distance between the two had only grown, while Rhiannon wasn't the easiest person to get along with at Mythos Academy, she'd managed to make friends last year and it felt more like home than the military base her father was currently living on. Despite not really knowing her mother, the daughter of Morrigan felt more connected to her godly heritage than her mortal side since attending the academy.

The sight of the creaky old boat filled her with a sense of comfort, knowing that yet another adventure was about to begin. Her father had been too busy to see her off at the dock so they'd had their traditional last dinner together of the school year the night before. The older man had given her an awkward hug and a firm pat on the back as she'd finished packing her things. Of course she'd miss him and their weekly Saturday activities, whether they played baseball, lifted weights, or went for a run together, the father-daughter unit always made an effort to workout together while the younger Anndrasdan was home on break. Despite her father being the only family she'd had growing up, Mythos had filled a part of her she hadn't even realized was missing.

As she boarded the boat, her green eyes swept across the deck in search of someone she knew. The brunette was busy avoiding a flock of freshmen when someone bumped directly into her, ready to lash out at whoever had crashed into her before realizing it was Leia.

"Leia! How was your summer?" Rhiannon asked, reaching to wrap the daughter of Demeter in a hug.

Three years a student and Tae still couldn’t get used to the half-dead, half-ghost pirates manning the Flying Dutchman. As much as he tried to focus on somewhere else, he kept a watchful eye on the semi-translucent passerbys. His body was tense and prepared to react if instigated-- not that he would know how to fight any of those things. Did you still feel pain once your flesh was peeling off your skin? None of Tae’s physical attributes probably stood a chance against them, and he didn’t have a steady enough hold over his abilities to be confident in using them; Especially on a ship. He couldn’t swim, and there was a shitload of precious jewelry at the bottom of the ocean. Tae didn’t plan on joining them.

His short stint below had been for some privacy when his mother’s call had come in. She usually greeted him before he boarded the Unnerving Dutchman but he’d been with Aaliyah when he arrived. They had gotten much closer to one another over the summer, both physically and mentally, but speaking to mama duke’s was something he only ever did alone. There was a very thick line between family and friends for Tae.

It felt awful lying to her and Julia about the truth of where he was going. His mother had protected him his entire life; His twin sister intertwined with him since birth. He hadn’t seen much of them since earlier in the summer, and even then money was strained at home- a problem that wouldn’t be here if he’d just went straight to the league. Alas, his father had taken that leisure away from him. Years of training to get his family out of the trenches for nothing as he was turned into a killer on his 18th birthday, a monster. All a thanks to his father.

“You not gon’ tell me you love me back, boy?” His mother’s voice scorned through the phone.

“I was only thinking, mama. You know I love you.”

“Need to think about if you love the woman that birthed you. I told you the durag was messing with your ‘ead.”

He smiled, her scolding had only taken him back to when he was a young teen. Normal, and her baby. A distant memory now.

“I’ll call you tonight, a’ight? Bye, mom.” The line fell silent. He let out a short sigh, relaxing as he braced himself to head back up to the upper deck.

Phwoosh. Air brushed past his neck.

Tae turned on his heels to identify whatever it was. In the distance, the dry cackle of a lifeless corpse bounding about echoed through the lower deck. He rubbed his neck again, his scowl lingering over where the pirate had disappeared to, before bounding forwards and up outta there.

“Nothing's funny you dead motherfucker. . .” Tae muttered under his breath.

He couldn’t find Aaliyah as he rose up onto the deck… Or Percy, who in spite of his best efforts, he couldn’t stop thinking about over the summer. If anybody else needed him they’d call him, or find him, or some other shit.

Right now he was too irritated to even be around anybody. The students grouped up and giddy only made him hot, and angry as he tried to maneuver around through them for some privacy by the front hull..

“Get the fuck out of my way.” Tae barked loudly following the most obvious bump into a curly-haired light skin kid. He could tell he was a freshman by the way he’d been so lost, mouth left agape in his observation of the deck- Ignorant, was how Tae saw it. His face was twisted into a sour frown, eyes flickered through brown and a faint red as his powers threatened to rise.

There was so much more crap he wanted to give the kid. So much being drawn out of him like his anger was quickly multiplying with a mind of his own. A venom taking over him. Tae got mad quickly-- but it was never anything like this.

His right hand grabbed at the honey brown of the boy’s t-shirt, reeling him closer to him. So close that the kid would be able to see clear and bold, the flickering of his eyes, and feel the heat bouncing off of them and onto him. “N*igga,” Tae struggled to say over the anger coursing through his veins-- the same one that’d been there the night he killed those kids.

Watch your fucking step.” Was the most he could say before pushing the boy off of him and racing for the front of the hull. His hands clasped tight against the railing as he came crashing into it, and if he could swim he’d have jumped into the fucking water to cool down. Instead he took in giant breaths to calm down, searching frantically for the lighter and pre-roll he had stuffed in the pockets of his jacket.

It seemed each passing moment away from the “Freshie” had really allowed Taevon to cool down… That and the honey lemon backwood burning at his lips. His breathing steadied to a beat just as slow as smoke escaping his lips did. He hung on every last taste the smoke offered, allowing his eyes to fall near closed as he did so.

“Fucking hate you, dad.” Tae murmured to nobody in particular. His father could hear him where he was, he simply only chose to reveal himself when his son was increasingly violence or erratic. That bum motherfucker. He was probably feeding off of the close encounter that’d arised only moments ago.

“Hmph… “

amina diao.

It was practically suffocating—how packed the ship was. Regardless of how many times Amina has experienced the same adventure to Mythos, it always remained her least favorite part of the school year. At least at the academy, there is a large campus for students to wander and roam free, whereas they’re left to practically breathe down her neck on the ship with how close everyone is. Her relationship with Mythos can be complicated. She’s grateful, deep down, because she shows that her return to Mythos means giving her life some sort of meaning again. However, the thought of being surrounded by various strangers or individuals that she doesn’t like is enough to make her shudder.

She adjusted her jacket as she recomposed herself, thoughts wandering back to the latest summer vacation. It had been uneventful—it always was. Her family still didn’t acknowledge her, leaving her alone in her apartment on most days, and the most communication she had consisted of the occasional texts shared with her few friends from the academy. International texting can be a pain to pay for, so Amina tried to keep it to a minimum. Of course, there were also no attacks made on her, but that had been the least of her concerns.

Surveying the area for someone she knew, her eyes landed on Taevon who looked pissed as he stomped toward the front of the hull. “Most definitely not,” she muttered to herself as she momentarily watched him. Their relationship had been long over, but no amount of time could erase the awkwardness and frustration that grew between them. She tore her gaze away when she saw someone making their way towards Taevon looking equally as pissed. It was too early in the school year for all of this drama to already be happening.

Amina released a sigh as she began to make her way to the lower level—she desperately needed a glass of wine if she was going to survive the trip. Trying to maneuver herself around the various groups of people, she gave a gentle wave to Alina as she passed by. Not wanting to interrupt or get involved with the conversation that the girl was already in, she left it at that.

The lower level was far less packed than the upper one, giving Amina a sense of relief as she went to order a drink. There was a much shorter drink menu than the previous year, leaving her something to ponder over while a crew member got her beverage. The answer came to her after the first sip. It was non-alcoholic. She would have to have a word with Kiaan when she saw him again.

“the sunlight paints us gold.”

She would commit this view to memory and create it one she stood in front of a canvas again. While a lot of the students had taken refuge on the second floor to escape the nauseating rocking of the Flying Dutchman, Alina preferred to stay on the main deck. The view was nothing short of magnificent as she leaned against the railing. It was also a way for her to help any freshmen that were in need of it. A few had shuffled closer to her in order to escape the crew members or to talk their nerves away. She didn’t mind really, she had been the same way when her destiny had snatched her from all that she’d known. It was nerve wracking the first time around, to say the least.

“Hello.” Alina greeted the person who’d walked up beside her kindly. Her smile was all the warmer at the sight of Cecilia standing beside her. The daughter of Hecate looked as regal and imposing as ever. Cecilia was probably the most well put together person that Alina had met, the true definition of prim and proper. Even when they’d first met Cecilia had been composed, her body language back then hadn’t been one of a nervous first year. Instead she was cool, much like the water below them. It was with that same determined and confident gleam in her eyes, that head of hers held so high and shoulders squared, that she climbed through the ranks at school. Cecilia had earned quite a reputation among the students. Though Alina didn’t really treat her any different than normal.

“Cecilia! My summer was amazing. I traveled to Côte d'Ivoire with my mother in order to visit family there. They have the most wonderful street markets and the beaches were beautiful.” Alina always loved visiting her mother’s home country. Family reunions were typically the highlights of her summers, it was nice spending time and catching up with them. Though her trip hadn’t gone too smoothly, considering she had delt with a monster problem. “I have to deal with a Kadindi. Those beasts eat everything and it was terrorizing a village nearby.” She shook her head.

“Enough about me though. What made your summer so terrible?”

Tae watched idly as his blunt left his hands. In a slowed motion his eyes traced the thief… Lingering on their features as they ascended up to meet her eyes. They traced the smooth, olive skin revealed in the visible cleavage up her neck before stopping dead at Percy’s big brown eyes.

He was upset about someone interrupting his session; Of all people, Percy too. Tae let out a short grunt before turning his eyes back to the rippling waters. He was too high, and confused to say anything sensical now.

While he expected to be scolded by Percy, the tone in her words hardly matched the words she was saying. He smirked at the realization. Percy often wasn’t too harsh with Tae, it was the reason they’d got along so well. In spite of the dark attire she wore, she had a bright red heart. She’d been the cheerer to Tae’s recluse and he enjoyed the familiarity. They weren’t on the best of terms, but it was simply nice to hear.

Alas, Percy’s cheer often made her an “on to the next” kind of person. She didn’t understand the lasting effects that Tae’s history had on him, and it burned him when she considered his past something he could overlook… Shit, Tae was going down memory lane. He twisted his neck in hopes of stretching out the thought but he couldn’t help but repeat the events of last semester that’d driven them apart.

Thankfully, she returned the blunt and allowed him to further cool off. One, two, three puffs of the joint had passed before Taevon had finally answered.

“Nice to see you too, P.” He said sarcastically, turning his figure around so his back leaned against the railing. It was in fact very surprising, not nice, and in a way, heart-wrenching to see Persephone. To have the first thing they talk about be some freshman Tae'd only just bumped into. His eyes were still limpy shut, smoke bellowed out of his mouth and sucked back into his nose. “You look… good.” Though he hadn’t really opened his eyes to Percy since she’d first arrived, the initial image of her first arrival replayed itself in his head. Like those silly shapes that floated around in your eyes after staring, he couldn’t quite get her out of his head.

“Your boy just got in my way. Needs ‘ta watch where he’s steppin’ and we won’t have any problems.” He added simply, and stretched out the blunt to Percy. She wasn’t like that, but her sudden interest in speaking to him especially after her summer long “sabbatical” forced Taevon to ask: “You fucking him, P?”

There was something specific about Alina that made Cecilia feel much more amicable than usual. Aside from how easy on the eyes the young woman was, her company never made Cecilia feel worried or pressured, like some of the other students. Alina was a formidable person, this much was true. Cecilia had seen firsthand her battles in the school's tournaments, her accomplishments. But this wasn't something she only did for Alina; the raven-haired girl kept tabs on nearly everyone. Know your enemy, know thyself. To any other individual, they would think her mad to have such a focused attention on her fellow classmates, to consider people enemies before friends. But, Cecilia was a product of a lonely, competitive childhood. Alina, however, was warm and kind. She offered the kindness of a low-effort friendship to Cecilia, something that other students had not bothered to do. The witch appreciated that.

"My, my. That sounds quite lovely, even if you were bothered by that man-eating beast. I have not had the fortune to visit Côte d'Ivoire just yet. But, there's no better refresher for the mind than a well needed vacation, I should say." Cecilia nodded, turning to lean against the hull of the ship with her elbows propped back against the rail. The ocean breeze running through her hair felt heavenly in the late summer breeze. "Frankly, after my first full semester at Mythos, I thought I would be too tired to travel and instead spent the whole summer in my mother's home in upstate New York. It was dreadfully dull. My mother is a very well off individual, so it is a comfortable life, I appreciate that greatly. But she's been entertained by a new beau and it simply makes me gag, spending breakfast together as they make puppy dog eyes across the table. I also had to deal with two monster attacks while shopping on Madison Avenue, who is surprised by gargoyles in New York City?"

The girl hadn't meant to ramble, but truthfully, it felt good to talk to someone who knew about her life fully. As her black dress ruffled in the wind, she smoothed her skirt and sheer stockings, looking up to see two familiar faces across the deck. There was Taevon, a man that Cecilia was surprised to find some friendship in as well, soon accompanied by Percy. She knew from the few words of her stoic male classmate that something had happened between the two. Curious, very curious. "You should add me on social media, I'd enjoy keeping up with you when we're away from campus, dear." The girl said with a small smile. She slipped her phone out from her skirt pocket and tapped away on the screen, using the excuse to shoot Tae a text before swiping open her Instagram for Alina.

Olivia was looking over the rails as the flying dutchman took them towards their destination – Mythos. It was the type of day that called for celebrations, reminiscing and overall excitement. Olivia still wasn’t sure how she felt to be honest. Maybe because most people had decided to settle into their roles as young demigods or demigoddesses. To Olivia, this was just another setting in which she’d stumble continuously over her words again and again. Of course, she missed her friends and was so excited to see them, especially Leia, but sometimes there was a heavy feeling in her chest over what everything meant. Every time she left her dad was a sad occasion too. He’d always tell her how things weren’t the same when it was just Bennie and Alissa with him.

Humming a quiet tune, she watched the colours of sky change in a kaleidoscope type of manner. Being on the flying dutchman and having the wind float through her hair was a rather calming and relaxing experience, one which she hadn’t felt in a long time. She wanted to look around, maybe find someone to talk to. After all, she didn’t want this year to be as awful as the last where she hardly spoke to anyone until the end. Still, it was difficult to muster up the courage to go directly approach someone.

Her eyes scattered across the deck. Already her keen eyesight could pick out a bunch of people in the crowd. She could see Leia talking to Rhiannon, she definitely needed to catch up with the both of them soon. She just needed to speak Rhiannon about training and to Leia about anything and everything her mind could make up. How her summer was, what she learnt. But then her eyes landed on the exchange between Tae and Percy. And Cash? Cash Macambrais? Oh god, she had relationships with each person involved in that little scuffle. But right now, what confused her the most was the fact that Cash was here. Cash her childhood friend, Cash the guy who she knew all throughout high school and lost touch with. She remembered late nights in high school, at a friend’s sleepover with her friends trying to convince her to ask Cash out – she was mortified.

Apart of her felt like maybe she was dreaming, or perhaps seeing an illusion which she her heart wanted to see. Still, she had to confirm for herself.

She quickly shuffled between the crowd of students, going through narrow gaps and thin squeezes until she found a familiar mop of brown hair with his back towards her and sitting. She approached quietly and tugged on the back of his jumper, near the neckline, in a grab to get his attention. Orange - how just like him. She always admired the way he dressed; it was kind of strange, but he always did stand out in high school. She tugged one again and held a steady grip this time, in an attempt to make him turn around and look back. Just one more thing, one more confirmation step.

Cash? Is that you?” she asked, eyes full of confusion as she tilted her head to the side in question. Oh god, what if he didn't remember her at all.

"It's me, Olivia. We went to high school together." She said half heartedly. Oh no, he probably did remember and he's going to think that she thinks that he's an idiot.

Aaliyah didn’t know what to expect when she returned to Mythos with Taevon. They spent their entire summer together after all. Morning sunshine, freedom and the open road. Aaliyah was still getting used to America. After all, she is and always will be a London girl. Things are just so different in America, but definitely more liberating. And it was strange, though they spent so much time together – long summer nights with just the stars and a cold bottle of beer, there was so much the two had yet to learn about each other. She also wasn’t sure how to act when she came back.

You see, Mythos had a more delicate eco-system. An eco-system in which everyone knew everyone, so by letting it slip that she was sleeping around with Percy’s ex-something-happened-between-them-but-I-don’t-know-what-it-even-was, she would be disturbing this delicate eco-system and making enemies all over the academy and that was definitely not what she wanted at all. Though she will admit, a more shameful side of her was happy that she got what she wanted and that she was one above her frenemy Percy. Though that would be a secret that she would tuck away in her pocket and keep to herself. For what everyone else knew, if they ever did find out about Aaliyah and Taevon’s long summer together, it would be a story of two friends going on a road trip. Nothing less, nothing more.

She soon spotted the back of Rhiannon chatting away to another girl. A smile graced her features as she looked at the interaction. She really did find an unlikely friendship in Rhiannon. No one would honestly assume that the two would have become friends, neither did Rhiannon or Aaliyah. They had an awful first meeting, all due to a misunderstanding on Aaliyah’s part. She thought that a rumour which spread around about her came from Rhiannon’s mouth but later during a tournament, when the two were on the same team, they hashed it out and acknowledged each other’s strengths. That, coupled with hanging out post-tournament and texting each other frequently during the long summer, had the two grow extraordinarily close. A lot closer than what Aaliyah would have thought she could get with anyone.

Rhiannon was a strange warmth but surprisingly, she wasn’t an unwelcomed strange warmth.

Her eyes also scanned over to Percy and Tae. Oh lord, she didn’t want to go anywhere near that mess. She wouldn’t even try to poke at it with a stick from meters away. The two could hash it out between themselves. They were grown adults after all.

So, decidedly, Aaliyah skipped over to her friend, to the point where she was directly behind the girl before placing her chin on her friend’s shoulder. “And tell me, what’s gotten you into such a good mood my love?” she asked, smiling as her eyes crinkled from their sides. She looked ahead to finally put a name to the face of the girl Rhiannon was talking to. She was a girl named Leia. Aaliyah had only ever heard of the other girl, not enough to form an opinion though.

Hi.” She said simply with a fake glee plastered on her face. It wasn’t that she hated Leia, she just didn’t know the girl.

while it was customary for kiaan to be above deck among the flock of demigods and legacies, spreading blatantly false information to the newcomers as a form of a cheap entertainment, he opted out of that tradition this year in favor of chatting up one of the undead gunners.

he'd spent the majority of his summer back in india, indirectly checking in on his siblings (who had long since worked their way up to being ethically employed at local companies) and slipping extra cash under their doorstep whenever he was positive they weren't home. it wasn't that he was avoiding them— no, not at all. if it were up to him, he'd spend every waking moment with those two angels. however, he knows full well how betrayed they must have felt when he up and left, especially since he was the only parental figure they'd had at the time. coming back and messing up the peace they'd found for themelves while not being able to explain anything...

yeah, he'd rather spend the night with the kraken.

instead, kiaan had made steady progress on his side project: developing an antivenin for the toxic blood that coursed through his veins. one of his professors at mythos had lent him one of her grimoires which detailed an ancient potion that, if implemented correctly, could potentially be a breakthrough in his research. It involved various herbs, barks, roots, and bones that he'd spent a good chunk of the summer travelling to acquire. Who knew so many plants could only be found in Kenya?

One of the last things on his checklist was marrow of the undead, and he knew this was one of the only places he'd have a chance of finding it.

"it's just one rib, marteen," kiaan bemoaned, leaning against the bar as the undead gunner named marteen rifled through a nearby storage chest. "you really can't spare one rib? you don't even have lungs in there anymore. what's the worst that could happen?"

marteen paused to shoot him a glare before continuing his search for whatever was hidden in the chest. "i owe ye nothin' and a half, kid. find one o' the lil' powder monkeys to steal a bone from, aye?"

kiaan stuck his tongue out at the gunner's back before spotting one of the aforementioned powder monkeys stacking bags of rice in a closet across the room. the kid couldn't be taller than five feet, his twig-like limbs struggling to hoist the heavy sacks over his head. with a cheeky grin, kiaan did exactly as marteen suggested— within ten seconds, the demigod strode over, plucked a rib from the powder monkey's side, and shoved the kid in the closet, slamming the door shut.

"hey!" he cried in protest, tiny fists banging against the wood. "you do this every year, you fucker!"

"but this time i took a rib!"
kiaan chimed gleefully, giving the door a final kick before slipping the bone into his pocket and jogging up the steps back to the main deck. "see you next year, champ!"

up top revealed a much sunnier scene, and kiaan had to squint at the sudden brightness against his corneas. it seemed that most of the student body was already cheerily chatting amongst themselves, excitement buzzing in the air at the prospect of being back at mythos soon. he didn't blame them one bit—the air here was laced with crack or something, because it seemed that he never wanted to leave once he stepped foot on that magical terrain.

with a satisfied smirk and no particular urge to wreak havoc just yet, the demigod leaned against the base of the crow's nest and plucked an unopened water bottle from one of the freshmen passing by, sipping lazily as the ship rocked back and forth with the gentle waves. one would think kiaan hated boats, considering the inability to hide from the sun at any given point in the day. however, he found quite a bit of comfort in the lull of the sea, like a mother rocking her baby to sleep. his absentee mother, nirriti, was born from the ocean's venom, which could be part of why he found such calmness in the water, but in all honesty, he didn't read too much into it. he loved riding the flying dutchman, and that was all he really needed to know.

Leia is quick to return the hug from the brunette as another warm smile makes its way across her face. Rhia’s presence never fails to bring her comfort, and she gives her best friend a gentle squeeze before releasing her. Admittedly, the daughter of Demeter had a sort of ‘friendship-crush’ on the young woman. Seeing Rhia in training and doing what she does best, Leia was astonished and had to talk to her. While the two may have originally been unlikely friends, they found themselves balancing each other out in some of the best ways. Rhia is the most badass person that Leia knows, and she admires her greatly for it. They’ve created fond memories together—including a makeshift version of Fruit Ninja during target practice—and she wouldn’t want it any other way.

“Rhia, it is so good to see you again! You have no idea how much I missed you. My father and I traveled around a bit to research invasive plant species. I learned a lot from that trip, actually. I’m hoping to share some of the information with the rest of the nature club, what do you think? Well, anyway, enough about me, how was your summer vacation?” Leia tucks a strand of hair behind her ear, gaze meeting her friend’s. Rhia’s green eyes were stunning, the color of pine and spring growth.

Unexpectedly, a young woman makes her way onto Rhia’s shoulder. Leia recognizes her as Aaliyah, though the two have never really talked to one another. The daughter of Agni is gorgeous and may very well be confused for a daughter of Aphrodite. “Hey, Aaliyah, you look really pretty today. How was your break?”

As much as Finn enjoyed visiting his fellow Swedes during the summer, he was dying to make the trip back to Mythos. While the rest of his friends were fending off all kinds of creatures and beasts in their respective corners of the globe, the bulk of his summer was spent mindlessly loitering around in his dad’s firm. Not a single feat or monster to his name, unless dealing with a team of conniving lawyers with awfully specific coffee orders counted for anything. In retrospect, he should’ve known better than to count on anything unexpected happening around his father, of all people. Whatever the guy was up to during his prime demigod years, something or other sure kept the beasts at bay in his presence.

Monster slaying aside, Finn didn’t have many close friends left in the city to hit up either. Outside of the academy, he didn’t really have close friends period. Up and leaving the country without prior notice for years on end does that to your social life sometimes. Between the long-lost companions from his childhood and others he wanted to forget about entirely, there weren’t many options in terms of reaching out for company. That was the reason he made such a conscious effort trying to meet people at Mythos in the first place. For better or for worse, he considered the place his new home for the time being.

So of course, he was elated to be back on the Flying Dutchman with a couple friends to make conversation with. It was the first time in months he wasn’t stuck talking with some stranger about the weather, or entertaining a stuck-up prick in a suit about an upcoming trial.

Not long after boarding the ship, he managed to corral a few folks together in the lower deck, sharing drinks and stories around the table. He realized he appreciated the intimate and subdued environment of the vessel’s lower levels, compared to whatever chaos was surely brewing up above. Plus, there really wasn’t anything quite like the experience of chatting up a skeletal bartender on a mythical ghost ship.

It was during a lull in the conversation when Finn excused himself from the group, walking up to good ol’ Mr. Skellington for a second round of sparkling water. He caught a glimpse of Amina ordering something for herself, amused at her immediate disappointment after giving it a taste. Even though he encountered the girl a number of times in Legatum over the years, he still knew her best as Vonnie’s old ex. Or more accurately, one of his old exes, since it seemed like the dude was racking up the numbers pretty quick. It got to the point where Finn practically mastered the art of third-wheeling whenever he wanted to hang out with the guy.

“Oh believe me, I already tried.” Finn gave a slight nudge toward Amina’s glass as he approached, shaking his head. “I’m still a little jet lagged from the trip here,” he added with a sigh. “Figured I could use something to keep me on my toes.”

He handed his glass off to the bony bartender, his gaze lingering on the undead pirate as it got to work. Three years deep in the trenches, and it was still difficult at times to process the surreal world he was essentially dragged into. Finn offered the crewmate a smile when he was handed the new drink, shifting his attention back to the other legacy afterwards.

“So what’s your excuse for trying to get buzzed the first day back?” He shot Amina an inquisitive look, taking a slow sip of his freshly poured beverage. He knew that she wasn’t usually one for small talk, but as far as he was concerned, there was nothing more depressing than trying to get wasted alone in a room manned by talking corpses. And who were they kidding? If it's one thing Finn learned over the years, it was to never underestimate the power of small talk.

Taevon wasn’t sure what he’d been expecting when he asked Percy the question but guilt quickly washed over him at Percy’s “no.” Why had he been so relieved to hear that? Tae didn’t owe Percy anything and he knew that, and yet it still felt that however miniscule her hold over him was now, it was still there.

If she asked him to jump ship with her right now and journey together… Only the two of them, would he have said yes? Tae’s jaw clenched down tight. He was already aware of the answer to his question, he only refused to believe it.

God, he was too high to be thinking this hard.

“Like that Pink Floyd shit you always play?” Tae teased, a single brow arched in Percy’s direction. “Me and bro ought to go another round just for his taste in music.”

Percy and Cash being groupmates in some sort of rock band only furthered Taevon’s reassurance. He fought a smile, the corners of his lips barely forcing themselves down in the other direction. His next go at the blunt was key in burying the attraction that Percy’s presence so strongly tried to pull to his surface.

A long inhale, and an even longer exhale followed.

Tae was already anticipating the question the moment he’d asked about Cash and Percy. She was obviously going to flip things back onto Aaliyah and him. His gulp was dry following the several drags of the session, eyes scanning ahead for where the girl in question herself might be.

He glanced back down at Percy when he couldn’t find Aliyah, letting the cloud of smoke mask her face before responding simply, “Road trip.”

The smoke clearing only revealed a still inquisitive Percy. Tae rolled his eyes, staring back ahead like he had been before. “We went out to a couple states.” He added, but there were still so many additives he’d left out of this equation.

Aaliyah had been at Tae’s side when things with Percy had gone left. As much as Tae despised being babied, Aaliyah wouldn’t take no for an answer. She consoled him, so much so that she’d even returned to Detroit with Tae. While he certainly wouldn’t allow anyone to meet his family, Aaliyah became the only student who’d been closest to them-- albeit a couple miles away, she was in the same state as them.

Their tour had been mostly spontaneous, beginning with Tae showing her around his old ‘hood, and imploring about how a pretty and primp London girl was able to put up with his abrasive tendencies. That was when they’d first crossed the platonic boundary.

Their road trip started itself-- spurred by Aaliyah’s curiosity, and Tae’s familiarity. There was no set destination for their trip, they were fueled solely by the chemistry between them, and the wonders they uncovered with each new destination. Aaliyah didn’t pry into his life, and Tae didn’t for Aaliyah either.

It was a summer without monsters, and magic. One filled with human connection and amusement.

One that should have been spent with Percy.

New Message.” His phone blinked and vibrated in the pocket of his jacket. It was Cecilia. A pleasant surprise that’d snapped him from his trance and offered Taevon a way out of this tension-ridden with Persephone.

There's sum'n I have to deal with.” Tae excused the text. Leaving the backwood with Percy, he strolled back from the front of the ship. This time even melting into the crowd of students. His issues with Persephone were something they’d have to unravel another day. It was ill-suited for his first day back.

To: Cecilia :darkwizardhat:
im further at the back now. found a sturdy enough bench. thanks for the save. come thru whenever

Tae typed, before shoving his fingers back into his pocket. He reclined on the bench onto the wooden side of the ship, nothing comfy but it allowed him to relax his muscles formerly tense with Percy. He’d light a new backwood if Cecilia came quick enough. That, or he’d succumb to the sleep creeping up on him.

Olivia’s eyes widened as she felt herself crash into Cash’s chest, the taller of the two having caught her by complete surprise. She expected a simple ‘Hi’, maybe awkward pleasantries. Not for the other to go completely above and beyond. “Oh. I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to scare you.” She spoke quickly whilst running her hand through strands of blonde hair. A light tingle of pink started from the tips of her ears before slowly making their way down to her cheeks, rosy and hot as she looked up.

I’ve been good, I don’t think I really got into too much trouble after high school to be honest.” She said with a light giggle, airy and fresh to the ears. Not that she would get into too much trouble, everyone knew that Olivia Walsh was a stickler to the rules through and through – nothing like her older half-siblings who created quite the name for the Walsh family. She raised her eyebrows at his line of questioning, but more importantly she was sure that her cheeks glowed a brighter red at the contact of his hand to her hair and ear.

She quickly looked around before gesturing to a bench, empty and free of most people who were in her grade. She just wanted some space so that they weren’t just awkwardly lumbering around in the middle of the deck to be fair. “Let’s move there.” She said with a small smile, almost about to grab Cash by his hand before she stopped. They weren’t kids anymore and they hadn’t talked in quite a while, so it would be awkward for her to grab his hand, wouldn’t it? Still, her hand was still halfway through its’ motion and it would be way too weird if she stopped now. The tips of her fingers met Cash’s as she led him by the fingertips towards the bench before sitting down.

She saw Tae on the other side where the benches were, visible to the point where if he looked in her direction he would be able to see her. And at this point he was staring in her general direction so maybe he could see her in his peripheral? She shot a quick smile, not wanting to embarrass herself if he wasn't in fact looking in her direction.

I originally got accepted into Durham for Philosophy and Theology” she spoke before continuing, “but I honestly felt like it was kind of a safe choice. I knew wanted to do something, but I didn’t know what. Then this school in England reaches out to me and tells me that they want me on their course, so I felt inclined to accept.” That was grazing the story of Olivia Walsh at best to be fair. It wasn’t that she didn’t trust Cash, or she didn’t feel comfortable around him. But she couldn’t ignore the pit in her stomach, like an anchor weighing her throat down. Stopping her from spilling her secrets. “And then, life changed… I guess?” she shrugged, slightly gesturing to the otherworldly boat that they were currently on.

Um… I learnt that my mum was a goddess named Flora. Roman. I honestly didn’t know who the heck she was, but the first time I met her she gave me this.” She beckoned, pointing to the clip which was snugly sat in her hair. Fioritura, the one thing she needed to keep with her at all times. Albeit simple in design, Fioritura was complex in its’ power.

What about you?” she asked with her eyebrows raised, full attention on the other. “Did you have, or do you still have any plans after high school?” she asked before continuing, “Did you find out who your parent or grandparent is?” she asked. She knew that a lot of young demigods/demigoddesses favoured themselves above legacies or grandchildren and the very thought heated her blood. It annoyed her how they were all in the same plight but people still wanted to be divided.

ALEXEI KEMP

It had been a mostly uneventful summer, in fact perhaps the most boring summer of Alexei's whole life. Which in the life of a demi-god, was a good thing. Now that he'd been attending Mythos for a while his abilities were mostly under control, and he could safely go visit his family without fear of attacks from mythical creatures. It was hard, keeping this part of his life secret from his younger sisters, but it was to protect them and it just made him even more excited to see them every summer.

Since finding out who his real mother was, it felt like everything was always changing. Since his eighteenth birthday then his life had been one long spiral. It seemed like things were finally falling into place for the young man and settling down. Returning to Mythos meant new faces however, and old ones. Alexei had made friends easily upon arriving at Mythos Academy, which meant it was impossible to go anywhere without seeing someone he knew.

He didn't have to go very far before he spotted his roommate leaning up against the crows nest, heckling freshmen as they passed by. "Hey, Kiaan!" Alexei called once he was closer, a grin overtaking his face as he greeted the other boy.

"What's that?" He asked once he was close enough to see the bone-like item clenched in one of Kiaan's fists. Typically, it was best not to ask the son of Nirriti about his shenanigans, but Alexei was more chaotically inclined and curious than most.

Alina Soleil
“the sunlight paints us gold.”

“Aw, don’t be like that Cecilia. Isn’t it sweet that she’s found someone that she cares for? Romantically of course.” Alina thought back to her own mother and how she’d urge her to put herself out there again. Akissi was the most beautiful woman in her daughter’s eyes. More beautiful than any deity could hope to be and so creative that she put the muses to shame. Yes, her mother was a catch. “Gargoyles huh. Did they give you a...hard time? Did you go at them...stone-faced and determined?” Alina bit her lips as she tried to keep a straight face. But she cracked quickly after. She knew that Cecilia probably wouldn’t appreciate her puns but she really couldn’t help herself.

As she wiped away a stray tear Alina looked down at Cecilia’s phone. “I’d love that. Honestly we should have done this sooner.” She added the other girl on all of her accounts, even the school ones. Alina didn’t know how it worked but when they’d stepped foot on the boat and then onto the land itself, their social media seemed to change in a way. Or rather it was more protected? Pictures taken at the school or on the island never seemed to be able to access outside. Like the barrier that kept their existence a secret also extended to their devices. She’d just figured that it was a mix of magic and perhaps technology. Really she didn’t think too hard about it, there were some things about Mythos that mystified most people. “There, now we’re friends online too. It’s really nice to see you again Cecilia. And I’m so happy that you’ve adjusted to this new lifestyle, I know that it isn’t easy the first time around.”

In the back of her mind she briefly wondered where Kiaan could be. That thought alone was a warning to her. As if something was telling her that he was up to now good, as usual. Alina was pulled from her thoughts by the sound of something large emerging from the sea below. She couldn’t help but laugh at the all too familiar sight of the Kraken’s tentacle. Alina knew what was about to come next, so she gripped onto the edge of the ship.

More tentacles wrapped around the ship and then the vessel was tilted slightly, or as slightly as a sea beast could. Peering at them from the water was the kraken in all her glory, staring at the students both new and old from below. After a few moments, it was over and the Flying Dutchman was returned to its upright position.

amina diao.

Amina holds her gaze onto her drink for a brief moment before shifting it to meet Finian’s. Surely, he must have pitied her in her lonesome state. While the two were not friends, she at least didn’t mind his presence as much as she would have minded others. There was a sense of familiarity with him, even if it was slightly awkward because of the reason why the two knew each other—of course, besides in passing within the Legatum dorms.

“Just looking to pass the time, that’s all.” Oh, how she hates small talk. It would be her ultimate demise someday. Amina knows that Finian is well aware of the fact, but she also knows about his nature of trying to help others. She recalls how he once tried to help her and Taevon resolve an issue between them in the months that they were together. Unbeknownst to him, their relationship had practically been over at that point.

Taking another sip of her beverage, she hoped that it would taste better the second time around. It didn’t. The drink’s only purpose now was to serve as a reminder of Kiaan’s shitfaced actions. Damn that son of Nirriti. Amina set her glass down just as the ship began to tilt. Bracing one hand onto the counter and the other onto her seat, she knew that it had to have been the work of the Kraken.

Once the ship returned to its normal position, the legacy of eros noticed that her drink had spilled. “Well,” she began to mutter and look for something to clean with, “I guess there goes my attempt at some liquid courage.”
