    ~MLM's Metallurgy Factory~
    Dusk

Tough Luck. For many, it was a reality readily accepted for others an unbeatable foe. Out here in the Void Ring, you had to be tough, because life was always trying to be tougher. And as the winter was coming in the Skliri Elpida Cluster, as life was bearing its fangs again at everyone, a group was getting ready to slap at life’s hostilities yet again.

The plan was simple, perhaps with just a little too much “trust me bro,” sneak into a metallurgy factory and stuff as many rare ingots into concealed bags as possible. The target? Moonlit Metals Incorporated, or MLM Inc. for short. The group’s hot-head leader had heard a thing or two about the setup of the factory, how the finished products are hidden underground, and there’s a special elevator you need to take to get to the underground storage that was located on the second or third floor.

The setup? A paid-off worker accidentally broke an important part of the elevator the day before a large shipment would be sent out. The mechanics that would show up at the factory were diverted, and their uniforms were borrowed. Unfortunately, the true inventor and engineer of the group had poor people skills and so the even more unfortunate landlord had been convinced to be one of the two false mechanics.

Waiting on standby were extra muscle and distractions. Part of “the plan” involved getting the extra muscle in and to the elevator to help offload some of the sweet sweet metals, but that could only happen if the distractions acted up at the right time. Unfortunately, a proper signal wasn’t agreed upon in time for the group’s false mechanics to show up for their “job.”

Off to the south, the sun was losing light, preparing to go out within the endless pillar of the Storm. While it was still well above freezing, it was rather cold, with a moderate breeze blowing through the developed streets of concrete ground and hard steel/brick buildings. Lamps both oil and lightning igniting as everyone got into their positions. A Beefcake and a Dysfunctional Construct waiting in separate nearby alleyways, while an Ego with a Mouth was resting on a not-far-off rooftop.

Hoping for the best, the pair of mechanics approached the public entrance of MLM’s metallurgy factory, the building being the equivalent of 4 stories in height, it was a daunting figure. So much so that the craftsman Herodotos gave his partner in crime Comghall a small nudge and a look that screamed “please don’t make me do the talking.” Kyogo had altered their faces a little with makeup, but other things could give away their identities if they slipped up.

A pair of guards and a site supervisor awaited at the doors for the pair.

“Are you two here from the Star-pace Workshop? If so, hurry up, you’re already 5 minutes late!”

    Edge of Existence

Contacts were only as good as your planning around them. It was something he learned early on and something that stuck with him to this day. If he were to forget this precious lesson then he’d be up shits creek. As it was he’d say he still wasn’t far from shits creek. He was fairly certain that Hero had the skill to complete the job, and given an ideal world he wouldn’t have needed to join in.

The world was not ideal however and he was forced to adapt on the fly. His connect was able to let him get a heads up on there being more heads than expected in today, but it was already in motion with the git they’d paid off. The blasted metallurgy had been skimping his supply for the last year, he’d get what he was owed dammit. Besides his little freeloaders could probably make good use of the extra they nab as the metallurgy’s cargo fee.

Feather had already filled him in on all she could when she’d made contact with the connect last and should be making her way back to point Alpha to rendezvous with Ego. Her long range capabilities would be needed if everything went south. Meanwhile, Toll, had the job of being their ear to the ground and keeping the heat off them.

Their support was ready, all that was left was to make sure they were. Unfortunately judging by the look of Hero he wasn’t going to be much of an asset in the charmer department. He gripped his hat’s brim ready to make an introduction at the guards when the pair gave them all the opening they needed to continue in.

“Eh, sorry about that newbie here couldn’t find his way for shit. Had to come collect him from our last worksite.- Hear that, we’re late so you better damn well doubletime it. We need any additional clearances or will this do?”

He raised some “borrowed” badges from their contact. They were the genuine article alright but he didn’t want to be around when they were checking inventory and realized they weren’t the expected loaners.

    Colonel Panic

The factory supervisor didn’t have time to scrutinize the appearance of the two false maintenance crew members. A hidden blessing for the pair perhaps. Even so, the pair of security guards looked them up and down. The supervisor handed one of the security guards a set of keys, shouting before storming off

“Some of us have jobs that need done in a timely manner, and I don’t want to hear any other excuses, ooooooooor I’ll make sure to leave something nASTY at the review boards at the labor guilds around town!”

With that one of the guards led Comhghall and Herodotos into the building, unlocking and relocking a few doors along the way. Once they were near the broken mechanisms for the elevator, the guard just told the false mechanics to shout if they needed anything.

Herodotos was quick to get out all his toolsets the moment the guard was gone, but he knew anything over a certain volume would be heard. So Hero worked as tacitly as possible, handing Comhghall a set of makeshift lockpicks and a thin screwdriver.

“I’ll get this working, we’ll need it anyways. Maybe open some… opportunities for our friends?”

Hero tried to whisper but also not be too obvious with what he was saying as he handed off the tools to Comhghall. The inventor offered a half-hearted smile before turning around to the machinery. Truthfully that was where he was most in his element, tinkering as crafting. And due to his perfectionism, wherever he stayed ended up with free maintenance. Hero set himself to start with the machinery, it bordered the Elevator shaft, which continued up another level, but the stairs to the opening/doorway for it was right next to the bunch as well.

The grease-monkey inventor got to work.

Outside, the Beefcake and Ego both waited for their signal, the sun nearly promising to burn out any minute, a breeze carrying cold air from the west, probably originating from the Freedom Ring, a reminder of the coming winter and the chill of night.

    Rafiki

He hoped he would never hire anyone so dullwitted as these fools. He had a feeling he could have shown them a tarot card and they would have considered it for at least a moment. Whether that was because they were unaware or couldn’t be bothered he couldn’t know but at least that meant for the most part they were being left alone.

The guards could play at observing all they wanted they clearly didn’t know how to fix something to save their lives, especially since he only really knew the basics leaving it primarily to Hero. He could still pull the “checking what the newbie knows” card but that wouldn’t hold against intense scrutiny so they had to work fast before someone who did know their stuff came. He pocketed the lockpicks and screwdriver with a quick trick of the hand before coming closer to Hero so he could speak without issue.

“Ten minutes, I’ll slip down the shaft and get the access hatch open from the vents. If anyone asks where I went let them know I had to fix the wiring on the upper panel and hit the ceiling three times.”

With that, he pulled himself up with the ease of someone who had to squeeze out of tight spaces before at the drop of a dime. It was dark, but of little issue to him as he shimmied his way down. When he lowered enough he began working at the panels to get the hatch off. Even with the light being of little issue he still had shoddy chances and makeshift tools at best. He heard the release of one of the panel’s screws but he still was taking too long with it for the plan. He gave a solid two strikes to the elevator, a sign of requesting more time.

He could only hope Hero could stall if it came down to it. Once the panel was open he’d have opened an access point for Ego. Feather would likely come as well even though he’d warned her to stay as long ranged support… but he’d planned for it so it’d be okay… hopefully.
