The Beginning

It was time. After two millennia enough energy had been collected. The Fates were gathering at the Edge of Paradigm for the first time in ages. They had one purpose, to collect and create “Fates Chosen” in order to balance an askew realm. The Edge of Paradigm was filled with constant whispers of shadows and the movements of the Fates. The Fates themselves were countless. With no true shape best described as robed phantoms by the few that have seen one. The Fates moved with purpose all in tandem yet independently. The energy was finally ready now all that was needed was the vessel, Fate’s Chosen…

Anderson was happy. His life was going much better than expected. His childhood and adolescent days were full of mistakes and growth like most people that age. But he had made it past all that and was finally getting his feet on the ground. He could hear the birds chirping happily in the distance as he left work. The sound was peaceful and made him think of how he ended up where he was. It was as if he was driven by fate. As he peered into the blue sky covering the sun with one hand his memories took ahold and he began to daydream. He had joined the military a few years after high school and after graduating the basic training he was immediately sent on an overseas assignment.

This was where he picked up his nickname, Ander. It happened at an after work get together. His coworkers had gotten a little more than drunk and began to tease him and call him Ander. To the initial dismay of Anderson, the name stuck. Over time the name became more and more normal until it was an endearing name that his closest friends and family called him. Ander chuckled to himself, he had almost forgotten the origin of his shortened name.

Another fond memory was how Ander started his family. While on his overseas assignment he found the women of his dreams and eventually got married. After a few years they successfully created not one but two children. All was going well in the world and Ander was content. While daydreaming he was subconsciously walking to his car for the drive home. He could not wait to see the smiling faces of his babies. Their first birthday was approaching, and he was super excited about celebrating. His face went bright red and he smiled from ear to ear just thinking about it. It was enough for passer byers to notice and comments about. However, Nero did not care. As he entered his car still smiling like an idiot, he overheard a concerned bystander. “What is going on?” she remarked with a nervous tone to her nearby friend. Ander could not help but take a glance out of curiosity. She was pointing to something and as Ander scanned in the indicated direction his heart dropped.

In the distance very strange storm clouds were forming. It was something that Ander had never seen. The clouds were spinning and twisting like a whirlpool in the sky. Was this a small-scale hurricane or a tornado? Ander thought as he watched what was unfolding. Many of the onlookers had pulled the smart phones out and began recording the strange phenomenon. It would have been beautiful if it were not for the sense of dread that was lingering. “Something is coming out of it!” someone yelled. As Ander and the others watched something massive appeared in the center of the cloudlike whirlpool. It began to plummet towards the surface before two huge wings opened and ceased its decent. The large creature began soaring in a circular pattern almost as if it were gaining its bearing. “Is that a dragon?!” someone screamed. Ander squinted his eyes to try and get a better look. The creature had appeared over the downtown area of the city of Lockwood. It was souring above the building and would occasionally form a figure eight pattern in order to change its circular pattern. Moments later a terrible screech came from the creature and it began launching fire from its mouth. Many of the buildings caught fire and panic fell on to all the onlookers.

Alarm filled Ander and it was quickly replaced with a sense of action, his thoughts were of his family, he needed to protect them. Luckily, his home was in the opposite direction of the dragon’s wrath. As he started his car and began to move Ander could hear the shrieks and destruction coming from downtown. A feeling of obligation overtook him. His family was safe, but there had to be something he could do to help those under attack. Ander changed directions and started to drive towards the chaos.

In the distance the dragon was circling and exhaling fire at all the larger buildings in the area. There were partially collapsed buildings and some with holes through the mid sections. Many of them were on fire. The debris from the buildings had fallen onto the streets bellow causing chaos and panic. The fire was spreading, and people were fleeing in cars and by foot. As Ander got closer the destruction was otherworldly. Many of the roads had been damaged or were impassable because of debris. As Ander exited his car, he ran on foot listening for those in distress. It did not take long for the cries of people needing help were heard. Ander ran to the loudest one and started to remove rubble from a middle-aged man. Just as the man was freed the dragon swooped low over them and blasted a fireball the destroyed an entire building blasting him and the middle-aged man back several feet. Ears ringing and vision blurred Ander stood and helped the middle-aged man up. As the middle-aged man fled Ander continued his search.

Ander heard the voice of a women nearby stuck in a street level building. The building was on fire and it was spreading in her direction. As the smoke and fire neared Anders attempts at removing some of the larger rubble became more and more frantic. Ander could feel the heat of the flames. He tried not to imagine how much more severe it was on the other side of the door. The banging on the door got loader and loader. Her cries for help became more and more desperate. Cursing his weakness and putting everything he had the rubble would not budge. Just when hope was lost the middle-aged man from before smacked Ander’s shoulder and said, “We can do this together” as he grabbed ahold of the large piece of debris. Together putting all their might into moving the rubble it finally gave way and with a load crash the women was able to escape with minor burns. Ander and the others helped to rescue several more people before he heard helicopters in the distance. “Finally, the military!” someone cried.

A group of six helicopters approached from the horizon and began to open fire on the dragon. From what Ander could observe their small arms fire were nothing but a nuisance to the dragon. The dragon responded using a breath of fire that the helicopters narrowly evaded. The size difference truly was extraordinary. The dragon could easily fit one of the helicopters in its mouth. The helicopters made their next attack, this time with missiles. Each helicopter fired one missile the dragon and the dragon made no attempt to evade the missiles. This might have been ignorance on its part or pride, but every missile found its target and exploded into a blast of smoke with a force that those on the ground could feel. Relief fell over those who were watching as the helicopters continued to circle.

To the dismay of all present the dragon emerged from the smoke almost unharmed. The only indications that the missiles hit were dark smokey marks on its flanks. Now the dragon was moving much faster than before. Within a second the dragon was on top of the helicopters destroying one with a bite and another with a slash from its great claws. The remaining helicopter broke formation and started to evade the dragon’s movements. Weaving between buildings and changing altitude. Ander and several other bystanders continued to aid those that he could and carried others to safe locations, always glancing up at the aerial battle unfolding above them.

The battle seemed to have reached a stalemate when the dragon did something strange. Stopping and hovering in place it used its massive claw to carve what looked to be runes of some sort into the very air directly in front of it. The tears in the sky glowed and ominous reddish orange. Slowly the dragon completed the “words” and a sigil of sorts appeared where the words were. Out of the sigil fire erupted into four different blasts. Each blast hurtled towards a helicopter. As the helicopters evaded the blasts continued to chase their prey. One after the other the helicopters succumbed to the endless barrage of fire. Terror filled the hearts of those watching even as the continued to help those they could. After the final helicopter was destroyed the dragon released a roar of victory so load Ander and the others had to cover their ears. The dragon released a breath of fire towards the sky as a victory blast before departing the area. Short term relief overcame the bystanders. Emergency services began to show up in force all around the city as turmoil ran rampant. The evacuation and rescue efforts lasted several more days.
