The Story

His name was Ichirou Saito, a samurai under daimyo, Yuudai Takagushi. He was his lord’s most loyal servant. He cut out his right eye to prove it, but a darkness was sown in his heart. Ichirou had an unquenchable appetite for power and even having risen above most samurai, he saw his seat next to Yuudai comparable to a dog. His heart was touched by the black nail of the black god, Donshoku-sha. Ichirou defied his love for his lord, and he sullied his blade with his blood. Yuudai’s samurai rallied against Ichirou, and as they surrounded him with steel, Donshoku-sha, in a voice like cold nails hissed, How much would you sacrifice to become god?

Ichirou gazed at his brothers and peered down at Yuudai who laid at his feet. He knew there was no going back. Whether or not the samurai painted him across the floor, he was dead inside. Everything, Ichirou answered, and the black god turned everything black.

Donshoku-sha’s hellish mouth opened beneath the daimyo’s castle and swallowed it whole. In the mouth of the black god, Ichirou was bathed in the hot blood of the other samurai as they were torn apart in front of him by demons. Ichirou was transformed and when the black god’s mouth opened, a devil emerged.

Ichirou’s darkness spread across the land. His demonic soldiers consumed the surrounding villages, and many of his demons rooted themselves in the community. The villages became farms for the demons. Ichirou’s power spread like a disease, and the cries of the holy emperor soon reached his ears.

Holy Emperor, Honghui Zhou, outstretched his arm and his heavenly army shone like the sun across the land. He took back the villages and Yuudai’s castle. The land celebrated, while Honghui dealt with Ichirou. Donshoku-sha was rooted in Ichirou’s heart, feeding off his internal grief that only the holy emperor could see. Furious that his inner turmoil was revealed to the court, Ichirou in a rage was freed by his captors—who were oni in disguise—and he murdered the holy emperor. The divine castle turned black. Loyal guards of Honghui sacrificed themselves to give Honghui's wife, Bing, the opportunity to desperately throw her son from the balcony into the river below as Donshoku-sha devoured the castle and everyone inside.

Ichirou was once again bathed in the blood of those sacrificed, and his power became phenomenal. He assumed the throne as the demonic emperor, the closest living entity to a god, but Donshoku-sha was not satisfied. He knew Honghui’s son had escaped, and he warned Ichirou that as long as the boy lived, he was destined to fail. Ichirou in his arrogance was not bothered. He was confident the oni and the yokai would kill the boy, but the boy was not alone.

The Setting

39bb2d4f00522b13d8cfe55780a082be.jpg
The setting takes place in a world called Huayuan (hoo-wa-yan) 花园, Garden. Huayuan is a completely traditional Asia-themed world and there are many cultures and languages from countries we know today in Asia. Every character’s name and lifestyle will stem from traditional Asian culture. If you aren’t familiar with it, then here is your anthropology challenge.

Races

There are various creatures that make Huayuan their home. Some are gentle and others malevolent. They vary from exotic beasts to spirits. Every animal is capable of speaking in this world, but only if they want to. Most live a secretive life. The servants of Ichirou are all oni and youkai. They are the offspring of Donshoku-sha, the black god, and carryout Ichirou’s will as compensation for the devouring god to use his body as a host. The oni are capable of assimilating the bodies of those with darkness in their hearts. Whether it be jealousy to the extent of harming another or plotted murder, a normal man can become addicted to the darkness filling his heart and transform into a monstrosity at short notice.

Technology

There are wooden vessels that fly for the mountains in Huayuan extend into the heavens sometimes. Muskets and cannons are the highest level of weapon technology. There are no steam engines. There are only flying ships, sailing ships, and creature-drawn carts and carriages. True power lies in magic and the secret martial techniques of the various surviving dojos, temples, and families scattered throughout “the garden.”

The Child Emperor

Guang Zhou
The Young Emperor; The Spark
Age: 8
Gender: Male
Height: 4’6”
Weight: 95 lbs.
Hair Color: White
Eye Color: Blue
Build: Scrawny
Complexion: White with a dim glow

Personality: Guang is just a kid. He is upset that his father and mother died saving him. He wants to become stronger, but he knows he’s weak because he’s just a boy. He acts like a spoiled brat and will run from those he doesn’t trust. He thinks he knows what’s best for himself and will have to be convinced otherwise. He has never ventured outside the castle and so the open world is frightening and bizarre to him. It is also no place for a young holy emperor, with the fate of the world resting on his living shoulders, to be wandering around alone when there are oni set on consuming the last spark.

Powers: While Guang doesn’t know any martial arts, he has a natural affinity for magic. His very being is a well of magic, and he is blessed by the white god, Haepi. Those within his presence are shielded from the darkness and therefore can protect him without suffering corruption by Donshoku-sha’s servants. He is capable of performing miracles, but he hasn’t quite learned to control it. He also doesn’t know how it works or sometimes why they happen.

The Writers

This will not be a big group because it just won’t work as one. The most I would accept are seven participants not including myself. I have taken the role as the child emperor because he is significant to the story, but if ever I am away for any reason, then the co-GM will control him.

Every character regardless of what race or what background they come from, their goal whether evidently or secretly is to have Huayuan restored to what it once was. In order to do that, the young emperor must be protected and Ichirou eventually defeated. There will be evil daimyo the heroes will have to contest with. See them like bosses and they may have powerful samurai or shinobi of their own. Characters will start with a limited set of magic and techniques, but they will be able to acquire more in completed story events. They can also acquire powerful weapons. Therefore, if you submit to me an endgame character—meaning so powerful there is no room for character development—then he or she will be denied. Please submit to me a believable personality.

Use this CS as a standard template. You can design it however you like. If you need help with designing your CS, well, there are forums for that. You can ask those coders for help. Just be sure to give them credit.

Character Sheet

Code:
[b]Name:[/b] What is your character’s name? First and Last name. If your character is an orphan, then they do not need a last name.
[b]Nickname:[/b] What is their nickname? This is not to be confused with alias.
[b]Alias:[/b] This would be their alias or title if they have one.
[b]Age:[/b] Approximate age. If they are immortal, then what age do they appear to be?
[b]Gender:[/b] Male, Female, Neuter.
[b]Race:[/b] You can almost be whatever you want as long as it is Asian mythos. Understand that everything can die and be corrupted by the black god.
[b]Role:[/b] What is your character's occupation? What would you call your character's job class?
[b]Birthplace:[/b] What region did they come from? You can even create your own settlement that we can mark on the map. You can use this section to give a short blurb about it. Anything unique that one can only find in your region? Certain crops, materials, ore, art, or music?
[b]Height:
Weight:
Hair Color:
Eye Color:
Skin:[/b] Maybe they don’t have human skin. Maybe they have fur or scales?
[b]Physique:[/b] Plump, Solid, Athletic, Slender, etc.

[b]Written Appearance:[/b] This is where you mention details about your character. A picture is not mandatory, but you are free to use them. However, you must have a written description of any extra details not conveyed in the picture.

[b]Personality:[/b] What do they like, dislike, how are they overall, what are their goals? How are they when it comes to teamwork and combat? Do they have any cultural mannerisms? Do they have an accent? What are their fears? What drives them? These are all examples you can include in your character’s personality.

[b]Background:[/b] This is optional. I say this is optional because this can be created as the game goes. Not everyone knows their character right away, and being that this is a one-shot, there is time to develop him, her, or them. If you already know your character’s back story, then go ahead and write it. Include any names of mentors, father/mother figures, siblings, etc. Use your imagination! Take this idea and run with it. You can also collaborate with other writers if you wish to have companions.

[b]Gear:[/b] Describe their armor or clothing. This is not the weapons section.

[b]Weapon:[/b] What weapons are they known to use? How long are the weapons? How many arrows, darts, bolts, etc. How many weapons? I would like for each character to have their own unique primary weapon, but I understand if you have envisioned for your character to have a specific weapon and it is similar to another character's, then that is fine. I limit similar weapons between player characters to three. No more than three writers can have the same weapon. Those who specialize in one weapon are considered masters in that weapon. The more weapons your characters specialize in, then they sacrifice proficiency. One who uses multiple weapons and who chooses to use a sword in a duel will not beat the swordsman whose only weapon is a sword. Fists and feet are considered weapons.

[b]Magic:[/b] If magic is your character’s primary field, then you can have up to five spells. If magic is secondary and supporting to your character’s martial ability, then you are permitted to have only three spells.

[b]Fighting Style:[/b] You write here the name of your character’s fighting style. This is not the technique section and this is not where you describe how your character fights. This is where you name the fighting style.

[b]Martial Arts:[/b] Characters who specialize primarily in martial arts are allowed five techniques. Techniques can include element-infused or energy strikes not on the level of world-destroying ki blasts such as from anime like Dragon Ball Z so please do not write something like that. You are safe having the energy, element, or whatever support your character’s strikes. The technique section is for armed or unarmed techniques. If Martial Arts is secondary to your character, then they are allowed three techniques.

[b]Guardian Spirit:[/b] This only applies to human characters. When in the presence of the young emperor, human characters are able to see their guardian spirits. Their guardian spirits are celestial beasts and can assist them in combat. Starting out, human characters are only allowed to summon their guardian spirit once per battle. You can describe what your guardian spirit looks like here and even give them a name. You are also free to role play them however. Remember though, these guys can only appear when the emperor is in their company.

Rules

1. One character per writer. I am only allowing one character per writer at this time.
2. 300 word minimum. This is not a game for one-liners or people who can only write one paragraph.
3. Collaborate with Others. Please be sure to plot with others. This is why you are choosing to be apart of a "group" game. This is not a 1x1.
4. Communicate. Please let the GM know if you are going to be absent for a lengthy period. I do not need to know your business. I just want to know when you are expected to be back or finished with your busy period. If you leave the game, then please let the GM know so that I can replace you.
5. Activity. You will be required to post once a week. If you need more time, then at most, I will only grant you two weeks and no more.
6. Whatever the GM says Goes. If I say "no" to your idea, do not argue with me. No is no. If you do not like it, see yourself out because there will be no drama in this game.
7. Drama. By joining to this game, you are agreeing to join my creation and abide by the game rules and RPN Guidelines. I will not tolerate drama, and I will not tolerate disrespect. Do not invite disrespectful people to this game or problem children. I will let you and whoever you invited go. I will not have everyone suffer your petulance because you feel you deserve special treatment. I will do what I have always done and let the bad apples go.
8. Have fun. This is all I ask. Have fun, respect each other, and I look forward to seeing your amazing creations!
9. No Pre-Made Characters. Do not submit to me a CS from another game or a player character designed for another game. It is a huge slap in the face to me when I make this OP, and the writer does not even read it or design a character meant to fit in the lore. It makes for a hard sell and I will refuse such a character.

Sounds like so much fun!!! The premise is unique and interesting and ripe for ideas. I feel like it's a bit out of my depth, but best of luck to you and your players! ^_^

Got a few character ideas.

300 word limit. This is not a game for one-liners or people who can only write one paragraph.

300 maximum or 300 minimum? The way you word things sounds like a 300 minimum, while 'limit' sounds like a maximum.

Name: Akyoto Toratetsu of the Golden Tiger Clan (following naming convention of family name first, personal name second)
Nickname: Bearer of the Sun and Dawn, Brass Tiger
Alias: Lord Toratetsu/Toratetsu-sama, Dai-shan, Gaidin
Age: 26
Gender: Male
Race: Human
Role: Samurai, Bushi, Heir to the Akyoto Family of the Golden Tiger Clan, Yojimbo to the Child-Emperor
Birthplace: Ryokujin - The seat of the Golden Tiger Clan, the Akyoto Family estate.
Height: 1 Ken, 2 Sun (6'2"]
Weight: 3 Maru, [~198 lbs]
Hair Color: Walnut brown, sun-kissed to have streaks of copper tones
Eye Color: A honeyed amber
Skin: Roughly the average regional Tengokuni skintone
Physique: Solid athletic

Written Appearance: Toratetsu was known around the Imperial Palace as the Brass Tiger, not only for the hue of his garb or the crest of his clan, but for his eyes and his smile. For his very countenance. Tall and supple with muscle, with a brass-hued complexion given only by the sun over the sea, Toratetsu carries himself with the predatory languidness of a panther; relaxed, but able to spring into explosive violence at the drop of a pin. He is hirsute for a Tengokuni human, with hair on his arms and chest, giving him something of a wild and untamable allure. Toratetsu has his share of pale scare across his battle-hardened body, the most noticeable across the bridge of his nose, as well as one splitting his right eyebrow and his chin.

Fire, Earth, and Water. The Fire is his passion, his ferocity. He is passionate about his work, the honor and glory inherent in his position and in the elevations it provides his family and clan. This passion is what puts a spring in his step and the neigh-perpetual smile on his lips - a tigerish thing to match that ember-like ferocity in his eyes. Earth is his grounded beliefs in his oaths and his code; the bonds of station, family, faith, and fellowship. Water for his adaptability, and his capacity to think on his feet and go with the flow.

These together are what made him a fine choice as an Imperial Yojimbo, tenaciously loyal yet capable of thinking individually. Trained as a warrior as much as a courtier, such mannerisms allow him a wide spectrum of pressure points to apply politically; attacking, evading, and defending much like he would in combat. As is expected of a samurai in service to the emperor, Toratetsu carries himself with poise, stoicism, and grace. His eyes, however - those killer-eyes - are the first to betray him when passions rise.

It is the honor of the Golden Tiger Clan, being renowned in the arts of war, to provide members of the Emperor's bodyguard. When word came of the heavenly blessing that was the divine heir to the Imperial Throne, it was the families of the Golden Tiger Clan who set out to select only the finest warriors as their gift to the royal family. Over the span of six months, great challenges were held at each of the Golden Tiger Clan provinces, each great family expected to host a challenge. Those who succeeded were awarded a jade seal. Only those who collected all seven jade seals were chosen.

Akyoto Toratetsu, first-born son of the Akyoto Great Family, was one endowed with such an honor. It was not without pain nor strife, so exhausted by his return to Ryokujin that he nearly collapsed four times in the closing ceremonies. It was only when Toratetsu had been selected that his father, Akyoto Kurusu, passed the swords Taiyoku and Akarustume into his care. With one night to say his heartfelt farewells to his father and his mother (Akyoto Ayame), as well as his many siblings and extended familly. A great feast was held at their manor in the Ryokujin country, celebrating the renown brought to their name and wishing one of their favored sons well in the capital. His dear mother, of course, praying that Toratetsu also find a suitable wife of good breeding in his service.

At the day of Guang Zhou's birth, blessed in memory, Akyoto Toratetsu and four other sons and daughters of the Golden Tiger Clan offered their lives and service as a gift to the Emperor, his house, and all who bear his name. It was Toratetsu who was charged to protect the holy prince, while others were places as guards of consorts, ministers, or the Emperor himself. At first, Toratetsu felt slighted, besmirched to play a trounced-up nursemaid to a suckling babe. He, of course, did not air such discontentment. In his post, he learned to know the queen, if mostly from afar. He knew the handmaids of the queen or the nurses for the prince far better. Most importantly, he developed a deep and protective caring for the prince, ever at his side or behind his shoulder as surely as prince’s own shadow down every hall and every chamber. When courts and festivals were held, Toratetsu remained close at hand to his charge, even when conversing with others of political standing.

When evil came to the palace, Toratetsu, along with the others of the Palace Guard, gathered to face unearthly horrors. Bravery and gallantry was nothing to the claws and fangs of demons, but they met them all the same, and not one died with a clean sword. Pushed back by the umbral tide of antediluvian evil, the Palace Guard slowly buckled. Toratetsu, frantically beckoned by a dying handmaiden, was beseeched to protect Bing and her son.

Sword in hand, he strode the scarlet-washed halls of this hell with teeth set imperishable against the pain of his many wounds and the icy, gnawing fear that trembled his hands and shook his core. When the Devourer came, it was a command from the queen that swayed Toratetsu,

"Protect him." Never before had Toratetsu's guardian spirit roared so loud.

A final bow to his Lady, a hand of blessing upon his brow, and Toratetsu leapt after his young Lord, even as oni gouged and raked against him. Plunging into the river, the peerless armor of Toratetsu was abandoned, lest they drown him. In bloodied tatters, swords still at hand, he kept to his Lord's side.
Ever his shadow.

Akyoto Toratetsu's non-combative garb is modestly courtly. A kimono-meets-hanfu, a rich pattern-woven silk and embroidered collar and hems, matching the sash about his waist. The jade badge of Toratetsu's station is as a medallion around the trunk of his neck. The patterns and colors of his courtly attire match his battle-dress, as seen in the image. When attending court, he still carries his swords, as well as a fan
In combat dress, Toratetsu dons his ashigaru armor, complete with kote and sode, as seen in the art. His helm bears a crescent moon crest and a mask like a snarling fu lion. A tiger-skin jinbaori is worn over his armor, painted with the Akyoto crest on the back.

Presently, he is in tatters. His armor and finery abandoned in the escape from the palace, Toratetsu's clothes and body were hastily stitched together to contine serving their purpose.

Toratetsu, like so many in his station, carry a pair of matched swords at his hip. His, however, are a specialty of is Clan, and one of the heirlooms of his family. The primary blade is a dotanuki o-katana - an Akyoto Family specialty. The kind of savage cutting weapon that would be considered outlawed in peace-time, if not for the jade badge of his station. His wakizashi is to similar form, both with a wolf-tooth hamon and lotus-styled tsuba. White stingray skin is set beneath red silk tsukamaki on the handle, complimented by the brass of the tsuba and engraved kashira.
The pair of swords is one of four relics in the Golden Tiger Clan. Taiyoku and Akarustume. Said to be forged from the shards of stars, they are light and balanced, strong to their core and harmonic with a sword-song as it cuts the air.
Akarustume is the o-katana, the first of the two. The Elder. Dawn Claw.
Taiyoku is the wakizashi, the second. The Younger. Sun Fang

While possessing no true magic of his own, Toratetsu carries a gourd of sanctified sake, marked with a finger-of-jade charm about the neck. This sake can be used to sanctify the watered steel of his blade, imbuing it with an ethereal essence, making it anathema to demons, capable of striking spirits, and even able to intercept other arcane energies. When imbibed, the sake has meager healing properties, or can wash away demonic taint, poison, or spiritual anguish inflicting by some ethereal entity. Spitting this blessed sake into a demon or dark spirit will burn like acid upon their forms.

This gourd only carries four "servings", before it needs to be refilled, which involves a lengthy sanctifying ritual of the sake itself, to be performed at dawn and dusk for four days.

Hyoho Niten Ichi Ryu; Two Heavens as One. An advanced school built upon the many lessons and foundations of traditional swordsmanship. It is flame and void, a oneness with destiny and fate, a surrender to the inevitability of death, so that no fear nor hesitation may halt the hands, nor the sword(s) in them. A complex, but versatile school, Ichi Ryu opens the hands of the masterful to a second sword. Toratetsu has been drilled in the sword since he was younger than the child-emperor in the intricacies of Ichi Ryu and its interconnecting disciplines.

Tiger Pushes Mountain - An aggressive school of martial arts that lends itself to Fire and Earth. Unrelenting, decisive, and merciless. It is grounded, only moving in sweeping and crushing advance, but never in retreat. With body or blade, it is the flowing and raging momentum of fire, consuming and cruel in the face of the enemy. Masters of Tiger Pushes Mountain are said to be able to shatter blades with their hands and to cleave through stone with gliding steel.

Leopard Stalks in Snow - Borne of the Rings of Water and Air, it is one on adaptive and evasive footwork, meant to outpace and deny the enemy and wear them down for a decisive strike. Balance of mind, body, and spirit is the fulcrum of Leopard Stalks in Snow, true masters able to stride over fresh-fallen snow without leaving a mark, walk the edge of a sword without falling nor bleeding, and even tread the breeze.

Wolf's Breath, Lion's Roar - A hybrid school of Fire and Air, hinging on focused and dedicated breathing. In the martial scrolls, it speaks of embodying the spirits of Wolf and Lion, making the one the many. It is designed to face multiple opponents, not only through combative maneuvers, but in the presence of the self. Through furious kiai, it makes one appear more than they are by evoking the primal roars and howls of Wolf and Lion to haunt the spirits of their foe.

[Mentions are made to the supposed capabilities of masters in these martial arts. It should be noted that Toratetsu is not a master of these martial arts]

Guardian Spirit: Tsovakali, a tigress-spirit that has passed down on his mothers side from the Clan's founding. Tsovakali is warrior and nurturer, guardian and destroyer. She rests idly in the sanctified steel of Akarutsume, awaiting her charge to invoke her name in a time of need.

Just want to make sure... Is this first-come first-serve? Because I don't think I'll be able to finish the CS in one day...

Hello! Still interested. Even though I see you tagged me I did not get a notification... not sure why?

I will make a character sheet as soon as I can. Also hoping its not first come first serve, lol.

Interested! I already have an idea for a character, so I'll try to have my CS up pretty soon. One question, though, is it that all oni & youkai are servants of Ichirou or just that all his servants are of that race?

Got a few character ideas.

300 maximum or 300 minimum? The way you word things sounds like a 300 minimum, while 'limit' sounds like a maximum.

I meant 300 word minimum. I corrected it. Thank you for pointing it out.

You have time. I accept only concepts I think fit well in the game.

You also have time. As previously mentioned.

Also, if anyone is interested in making ashinagatenaga with me, do hit me up and let's discuss it together! ^^

P.s. Ashinagatenaga is a pair of yokais, ashinaga is the one with long legs, while tenaga is the one with long arms.

In the meantime, I'll be using the dodomeki concept.

Oni and Yokai are servants of Ichirou. It is very difficult to play them because they are under his influence and wouldn't be trusted. There are other creatures from Asian mythos you can choose.

All oni and youkai are servants of Ichirou. Donshoku-sha is basically their creator.

Ohh okie okie. Question, though, is Shinigami considered a youkai?

O wait, nevermind, they are.

Gunnhildr Gunnhildr A vessel for the deity is the child emperor. If she's just a shrine maiden, then you can either make her human or whatever Asia mythos creature you want. Just avoid picking oni and youkai.

Crayons Crayons I think your CS needs to involve more of the game lore. There are two gods in this story. Haepi and Donshoku-sha. The human embodiment of Haepi are the Zhou family. All other spiritual and god-like beings are either servants of Haepi or Donshoku-sha. This is why the holy family were closely guarded and called upon when darkness tried to swallow the land. This is also why Donshoku-sha is trying to kill Guang because he is the last host of Haepi and by destroying him, everyone is fucked to put it bluntly. So I think your Tengu's clan needs some sort of connection with the family in some way if they have shrines. They could possibly be maintaining haepi shrines for the royal family. Perhaps the shrines are like a protective barrier guarding a certain area from Donshoku-sha's encroaching darkness?

Nubian_Legend Nubian_Legend Huayuan is the name of the planet. Yasuke has to originate in this game's setting. Also, why is he called The Lion of Sengoku when the Sengoku period didn't exist in this fantasy non-Earth world?

Crayons Crayons I think your CS needs to involve more of the game lore. There are two gods in this story. Haepi and Donshoku-sha. The human embodiment of Haepi are the Zhou family. All other spiritual and god-like beings are either servants of Haepi or Donshoku-sha. This is why the holy family were closely guarded and called upon when darkness tried to swallow the land. This is also why Donshoku-sha is trying to kill Guang because he is the last host of Haepi and by destroying him, everyone is fucked to put it bluntly. Oh... OK I wasn't aware from the OP that those were the only two gods. I just assumed they were two gods and there were also other gods, since most of the East Asian cultures are pantheist. But I'm absolutely happy to go with maintaining Haepi shrines for the royal family. Fits in with my lore and makes sense. Do you have some more info about Haepi?

Crayons Crayons There are other gods. They're just either under Haepi or Donshoku-sha. As for more info on Haepi, no one has seen them. The holy family is the only physical form of Haepi. As for Donshoku-sha, I say "he" only because Ichirou is his embodiment at the moment but when he is seen swallowing castles, he's this massive monstrous creature with a large mouth that swallows things. Within his mouth is hell. Both gods don't have a gender. They could be male or female. However, they choose to appear to other beings as the vessels they use.

Okies I will edit

At this point if you haven't received a verdict for me, your CSes are on hold. I'm going to wait until the rest of the interested people have a chance to find this thread and get a CS up. Applications are not first-come; first-serve. I will keep repeating this because I have a feeling someone will ask eventually.

I, on account of going back to school tomorrow and not being confident that my style of RP and characterisation are well-suited for this RP, I am dropping out. Good day, good night and good luck!
