It is Saturday September 14th, 2019. For your character, it’s just another Clear and Sunny day. This will be the date that all Characters will start on, it will be a week before disaster comes to the city. During this time period, Saturday the 14th to Thursday 19th, you can write what your character has done or is doing. That Saturday, if you so wish, you character can start to hear of a disease that’s spreading through the western part of the United States. The News talks about how there’s this disease that’s causing people to puke up blood, become dehydrated, headaches, and to slip in and out of consciousness. Eventually, the person falls into a coma and is unable to be revived, and that’s just the 14th. Then, at the end of the day on Sunday, there will be videos posted on the various social media sites showing these people getting up and violently attacking the doctors and nurses. Though, it’s only a few videos and many people assume it’s just a “West Coast” thing. By Monday, the number of people who are sick from this disease increases. People are now sick in Chicago, New York, and Houston, and the CDC comes out and advises the president to declare an emergency. The president holds off, as he doesn’t want the economy to collapse beneath itself. Also, it throws the emergency service systems into a frenzy. On Tuesday, the military are sending trucks and equipment through Memphis, and the local news is reporting that the disease has shown up in the local area hospitals. There’s still no looting, emergency services have remained at their post, and the only indication that there’s a problem is the increased military presence and the news. Wednesday morning, the Memphis police are as active as they’ve ever been. Many of the stores have run out of food, the banks of closed, only half of the city is working, as everyone else has decided to stay in their homes. Some may even see their first infected person, or if they're unlucky enough, get into a physical altercation with one. What they do see is horrifying, these people have blood all over themselves, some in hospital gowns and others just in plain clothing. They look angry and confused, but more importantly, they are violent. They seem to attack others, without being provoked. They are savage, as if they were an animal whose finishing off one of its prey. The President has now declared a national emergency, and the authorizes are acting as such. Thursday, the news is still, haphazardly, broadcasting. They’re telling people to stay indoors. They say that there is an increased number of animals that have become violent, even once peaceful family pets. The military and other emergency services are stretched thin, and absenteeism is above sixty percent. And seeing the infected is now a regular occurrence. The Memphis is in total chaos.

It’s up to you how your character gets through the first week. Will your character prepare accordingly, or will they be caught off guard. Will they try to reconnect with loved ones, or is it too late? Those are just some suggestions. You can write for just some of the days (only one day is required, as, that gives us chance to get antiquated with your character), or you can write a summary of everyday of the week.
Friday will be the day that people can start to meet up, and when civilization is unrecognizable by today's standards.

Zander Black
Zander had been sitting at a bar when he got the news: the deadly new infectious disease had infiltrated the east and was quickly going to be spreading to Memphis. Chicago was already hit. New York was already hit. His home state of California was long gone by now. It was Sunday afternoon by then. He remembered it well. He swore upon it.

The young guitarist downed the rest of his whiskey, leaving a fiver on the bar as a tip once he got up to leave. He felt a tightness in his chest like no other. He bgean to worry about his friends- Scott, Matthew, Alex, and Silas. He wondered what their lives were like now. If they were okay, anyway. His mind started to weigh heavy with doubt that the four had survived. They were too reckless. Scott and Matthew especially. He only hoped that the four weren't ripped to shreds like he'd been seeing online. He even started to doubt that.

Pressure in his chest turned into a tightness in his throat at all of these realizations at once. His eyes began to water, but he couldn't cry here. He would cry later, when he had the time. For now, it was time to prepare. At least, as best as he could, anyway.

Zander hit the local Costco equivalent later that evening. A little buzzed but not legally drunk, he wandered aimlessly through the store. All he managed to leave with was a nice supply of sweets that would likely go stale within a few days but wouldn't really expire, a bunch of water, and a backpack to carry it all in. He packed the bag up later that night with his jacket, some spare underwear, half of the food he picked up, and a large metal water bottle that was full. He stowed the bag away under the coathanger by the door, for easy access if he had to leave in a hurry. He always kept a knife in his pocket.

All day on Monday he heard nothing but ambulances, police cars, and firetrucks, it seemed like. He easily counted twenty that flew by his neighbourhood. He'd even woken up to the damn things. He holed himself up inside, glued to the TV and following the news.

Tuesday and Wednesday were a blur for him. Zander tried several times to call his friends and family in California. The lines had died out and wouldn't connect every single time he called. He took these days to lay around and grieve. There was no reason to assume they were anything but dead. It would, of course, take a lot more than two days to mourn, but these two especially hit him hard. He was in a haze for days. He knew they were gone. Accepting it was the hard part.

By Thursday, Zander started to give up all hope. This had been the hardest week of his life. He wanted this to be a passing disease, just like the flu. When reports started coming out at first, he never thought this would affect him. Much less uproot his whole life. However, he was curious. He wanted to see what had happened to his friends and family. Up close.

Friday was when he gained the courage to go outside. He didn't know he would never return back home after that. He grabbed the bag he'd prepared and stepped out the door. He wasn't sure if this was curiousity or suicidal behaviour at play, but he wasn't sure he cared, either. He'd lost everything. Why not go out and see what he was losing it to?

With that, he began to roam like the mills of the infected. For hours he roamed, not seeing a single one, surprisingly. Or, if he did, he hadn't recognized the signs. Nothing had come to take his life just yet, and that surprised him. Zander didn't want to die, at least not actively, but he thought someone would have tried by now.

All he found were empty streets and abandoned buildings.

Fred Black

On Saturday, Fred was lying in his bed, talking to his brother, Robert. He and Robert were discussing a few things, such as Robert’s birthday, how things had been going, and the like. It was small talk, serious topics kept on being switch from by Robert. This was probably due to the fact that he had been in trouble, once again. If there was a positive thing to say about their relationship, it was getting better since they both moved out of the home. Robert went on about his new job, and asked about Fred’s. Fred was relieved that Robert seemed to be settling down, but again, it could be a ploy to get Fred off of his back.

“Yea, she’s out of town for a few days, in Salt Lake. She’s evaluating a work site or something.” Robert then laughed, “Man, you married the enemy, you know OSHA’s a bitch.”, it was one of the few times that they both shared a laugh together, “Yeah, Yeah, I know. Anyway, I have to go.” and Robert replied with a “Likewise.” and hung up.

He walked into his kitchen, and from the refrigerator, he could see his TV from the living room. From there, he could see that his show had ended and was now showing a paid program. He walked back to the couch with a apple and water in his hands, and was about to switch to Netflix. The paid program then showed the news and the events that had been going on.

“Violence and sickness in L.A. have been hitting the city hard…” the anchorwoman said. Fred watched it until the segment was over, and then switch away.

Sunday was just another normal day, he did some chores around the house. He talked to his girlfriend towards the end of the day.

“So, how’s it going?” he said as the sound of fabric moving came from her end, “Good, the foreman showed me around, assuring me everything was alright. Of course they were, even with our Saturday trick, they managed to catch wind that we were coming.”, “Oh, you know how that is. Just talked to my brother yesterday. He seemed fine.”, she seemed distracted, and the sound was still going on, “That’s sounds nice, you guys getting along?”,

“Better than before, but whatcha doin’?” he said, with a curious tone, “Packing for tomorrow, leaving straight from the work site.”,

“That sound tough, maybe you should hang there for a day or somethin’”,

She gave a half-laugh, “You trying to get rid of me or something?”

“No, just thinking about your well-being.” The conversation went on for a while, and that was it.

Monday, Fred went to work as normal. There was some talk around the office and lab about the disease. They talked how it’s coming closer and closer, and that it may become a problem in the near future. Fred spoke up, “It’s like West Nile, every year the media pumps it up to be more than actually is. I bet a single person in Memphis wont even get it.” and the conversation followed from there. Some agreed with Fred, other believed that it was a more serious problem than he was making it out to be. When he went home, his girlfriend had not come home like planned. He called her phone, “I’m assuming your flight got delayed?” he said in a forceful neutral tone,

“It was canceled, and they’ve told us that it might be out for a few days. I’m still at the airport with Rick and Gage. We’re trying to decide what to do.” in the background of the call, you can hear one of the two guys mention something about renting a car and driving back, “Honey, stay at a hotel and just wait for the next flight to become available. Driving should only be a last resort, it’s a really long drive from Salt Lake to Memphis.”

“Yeah, I wasn’t even taking that seriously. Do you think they cancelled for the disease that’s been making its rounds?” She said, this time, the worry was genuine, and all he could reply was with and “I don’t know.”, “Hey, Rick is wanting to get out of here, talk to you later?” then they both exchanged “I love you”

By Tuesday, not even Fred could deny that there was a major epidemic in the United States. He went to work, but the quietness made the work feel empty. People were either gone, or not talking. Fred tried to have a conversation with other coworkers, but most seemed distracted. The news was now giving full on emergency plans, and there were several government officials on TV, trying to calm the herd. Traffic on the highway was not moving, and the military had set up several checkpoints. He saw all of this while drive from work, because in the morning, it didn’t seem that bad, as there were not that many trucks, soldiers, and people panicking. By the time he got out of work, the situation in Memphis had deteriorated to an unbelievable level.

Wednesday, he still went to work, even though the main office called to say that they wouldn’t be penalized if they couldn’t make it. He was stopped by the military every few block, they would take his temperature with a temperature gun. When he had passed, they’d just let him through the checkpoint. HE arrived at the office, only to see his manager’s and the COO’s vehicles parked out in the front. He walked to the glass entrance, and the other glass door was locked, but his manager soon game from the secretary’s office and unlocked it. He looked at Fred, “Hurry, there’s a meeting.” and as Fred walked up the stairs, he heard his manager lock the glass door. On the second floor, there was the COO and just him, and the COO waived his hand in Fred’s direction. As he entered the office, the COO spoke, “Your the third person to actually come in, but we just want to you to come home. I know, I know, it was a choice, but before we could send out another call, the lines went dead. Take whatever you need from your desk and head home.” Fred was stunned, he didn’t think it was going to come down to this. The COO shook Fred’s hand, and said “I’m going, Katie has elected to stay for an hour or so, but if there’s anything you need from the office, just take.” and he hurried past Fred’s side. And with that, Fred took his two pictures from his desk and went home. Nothing much had changed from when he went into the office, but he noticed on the stores near the office was being looted. His heart sank into the pit of his stomach, he was hoping his girlfriend was holding up in the hotel.

Thursday was the day of the apocalypse. Everything in his town had come crashing down, and the outside seemed like a war zone.

Addison was pretty much oblivious to what was going on, atleast until it was too late to begin preparations and start stocking up on supplies. She was on her way to class when the shit storm was in fully underway. She seen the people that seemed to act odd, looked sick attacking and ripping the flesh off of poor unsuspecting or just plain slower students and staff like a hungry wild animal would. "Oh shit! This is like some total George Romero shit going on and I'm right smack dab in the middle of it!" She said to herself panting as she was sprinting towards the campus exit. Once she reached the exit she proceeded to the parking garage to her car, but as she made it to the third level where she had parked there were atleast a half dozen Z's running rampant. looking around as if they were smelling for food.. "Shit." She whispered under her breath to herself waiting and biding her time, Once the Zs cleared out Addy swiftly moved to her small pontiac Grand Am getting in and starting it and making a B line for the first level and the exit having a dozen or more close calls nearly hitting paniced people as they ran around aimlessly. Addy took the quickest possible route to her parents. Arriving she pulled into the garage, the house was eerily silent grabbing the novelty spiked bat she was fond off out of the corner and made her way into the house, As she moved to the living room from the garage and passing through the kitchen she would find her father or more so what was left of him, head caved in, drawers ransacked, She then began looting what she could of use from her folks house. She managed to gather up...

List of supplies gathered from Addy's parent's home:
- 1 Police issue heavy duty mag flash light, Enough D batteries for one set of spares
- Her fathers military sea bag from his time in the service
- 1 can of unused mace
- 1 bottle of Percocet 10 miligram (Count: 98)
- 1 Claw hammer
- 1 crow bar
- 1 roll of bright orange duct tape
- her Ipod, Charger cord, and her portable charger
- Lap top, Gaming
- 2 cans of canned chicken
- one survival knife
- 1 .45 caliber US Army service pistol and a box of 50 rounds (Plus 17 in the loaded magazine) a spare magazine
- one plumbing for dummies book
- one hacking for dummies book
- 1 full set of Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 books (PHB, DMG, MM, MMII, Forgotten Realms Campaign setting, Magic of Faerun, Faiths of Faerun, Races of Faerun
Drow of the Underdark, The Underdark and 4 complete sets of dragon dice.
- 1 lake fishing pole and large plano stackable tackle box (fully equipped)
- 1 tent
- 2 sleeping bags
- 1 Zippo lighter and a 18 ounce can of fluid.
- 1 carton of marlboro red cigarettes 2 packs missing
- one half bottle of Vodka and a full bottle of Jack daniels.

Once She had gathered everything downstairs she headed up the staircase to the second floor, as she reached the top of the landing she began to hear a loud unfamiliar banging coming from her parents bed room. She moved to it slowly sitting her bags down on the floor, Opening the door slowly, And to her disbelief she saw her mother, or rather what used to be her mother who then quickly burst through the door in a sort of body charge sending Addison to the floor hitting her head hard. Trying to collect herself while trying to keep her mother from getting to close using her spiked bat to hold her at bay, after about 15 minutes of struggling Addison finally kicked her now zombie mother off of her moving over to her drawing back as far as she can with the bat, "I give you mercy." She said before proceeding to bash her mother's skull in until it she was no longer moving, Covered in blood splatter and still in shock She moved into her parents room grabbing the 6 bottles of water and 4 hershey bars her mom always hid from her dad adding them to her collection before exiting the residence and following signs that read "Safe Zone this way" or Military Extraction this way" Signs filled with hope and desperation.

The town was ordered to stay in their homes, and that's all Fred did. He was almost isolated, the phones didn't work, and the cable was out. The only thing that the TV was able to pick up was the local military information channel. They would give instructions on how to make the food last, what the current state of the nation was, and other ways to survive. Of course, all of the information was watered down, to keep some kind of level of sense of control. The power was going on-and-off throughout the day, and as the day went, the time the power stayed off got longer. Sometimes he would see the Army Corps of Engineers outside his window working on the power lines. Sometimes you would hear rapid bursts of weapon's fire on the street. All one could do was to find a safe place within their home and wait.
Fred's home was a two story, town house. He had moved furniture in front of all the windows and doors, locking them down the best he could. He didn't have any experience fortifying a house. Throughout the day, all he could do was pace around, and look out the tiny cracks of the window openings. He kept the front door uncovered as the military would sometimes come around with food rations or information pamphlets.
Towards six in the evening, there was a group of five soldiers at his door, he had seen them go around the town before. As he opened the door, the leader was quick to speak, "Sir, were were here to inform you that tomorrow at five, we're going to be loading civilians onto trucks and taking them to the local national guard base." Fred responded with a question, "In the morning, and what base?" The soldier kept his professional composure. "Yes, and the base in Bolivar. Before we can move you, we need to take your temperature, and mouth check." Fred just nodded his head, and a soldier that was standing behind the leader moved to him. The soldier checking him out took out a thermometer and placed it under his tongue. He then took it out and asked Fred to open wide. The soldier poked around, looking under his tongue, and the roof of his mouth. After he complete the examination, he said, "He's good" and moved behind the leader. "Okay, your name, birthday, and social security number."
"Fred Black, July 27th 1991, and 111-224-9921" the man entered the information on a PDA looking device. "Meet at that intersection at five in the morning, preferably twenty minutes before." The intersection he was referring to was a block away to his left. Fred gave his thanks, and the group of soldiers went to the next house. He locked the door and made his way to his bedroom upstairs. He began to pack his things.

It was now four in the morning, Fred wasn't able to sleep. Throughout the night, he heard the loud rumbling of large trucks, the footsteps of soldiers, and helicopters overhead. At eleven, the lights went off for good, and he was left in the dark, sitting on his couch with some of his belongings. He had a suitcase and backpack, in the suitcase were clothes, a first-aid kit, and other momentous from home. In his backpack, there wasn't much else, his laptop, government papers like his birth certificate, soap, and matches. He didn't have much that he thought would be useful. It was now four thirty and he took his things and left the house. He locked the front door, and walked onto the road. His shoes squeaked and sloshed on the concreted. It had rained earlier in the night. Walking down the pavement, there was already a group of people waiting at the intersection. They were bunched up, most of them were families, kids stood behind their parents, and parents consoled with their neighbors. There was a faint sound of birds chirping. One of his neighbors, Emily and her family were standing near the stoplight. She looked over and waved her hand. He jogged over to them, and greeted them. "Hey Emily, is everyone on your side counted for" She shook her head, "Yeah, We grabbed what we could." He looked over at her two children, a boy and a girl. They both had backpacks too, and the boy was holding a gameboy of sorts. "How about you" Emily said. And then her face went blank, and she looked behind him and saw no one else. "No, Taylor was in Salt Lake when things started to get bad. I haven't been able to reach her." and Emily grabbed his hand, "I'm sure she's alright." To get his mind off of his girlfriend, he looked at Emily's kids, "Hey, how are you guys holding up?" the girl shrugged and the boy said he was tired. Even though Emily was the neighbor he was closest to, he never learned their names. "Remind me, what are your names again." The kids were being usual shy kids, and gave low responses. Josh and Olivia. "I see you have a gameboy, what games you like to play?" and Josh just turned his gameboy around and showed a cartridge that said something like Kirby. "I haven't seen one of those since I was a kid." and the boy looked down and rubbed his foot into the pavement. Then Emily spoke up, "Tell him where you got it." and the boy, again, in a low voice said, "It was my dad's" and Fred replied "Well, I think it's very cool." He tried his best with kids, but never knew what to say. though, the situation at hand could also be a contributing factor. Even if Emily attempted to fully shield her kids, it was almost impossible. He looked back up at Emily, "God, I hope these trucks get here soon." and five minuets after he said that. You could hear the rumble of the engine down the block. Emily said to her kids, "Here, take mommy's hand." and she took both of the kids hand. He leaned over to her ear, "You may need a hand for later, you want me to take the hand of one of them?" She smiled and said thank you, "Hey, Josh, how about you take Mr.Black's hand." and the boy looked up at Fred and turned his face away, "You can call me Fed, and..." he pulls his phone out of his pocket, "I'll let you play with my phone, so your gameboy doesn't run out of juice." Josh then let go of his mother's hand and took the phone, and with his other hand, took Fred's.

The trucks stopped, and five soldiers from each truck jumped from out the back. They motioned for people to get in a straight line, and they did. As they formed up, one of the solders said, "Only once piece of luggage per person, and if it can't fit on your lap, then it must go." Fred unzipped his suitcase and took only one pair of clothes out and the pictures that he had packed. Fred's backpack looked a bit overstuffed. Other people did the same thing, but it looked like Emily had the right idea, as she and her kids only had a backpack. You could hear the others arguing with their family members of what should be taken and what should be left. Emily, her kids, and Fred were one of the first people to get on and they sat near the front. Olivia sat on her mother's lap and Josh sat on Fred's lap. Others began to get on right behind them, and older gentlemen sat next to Fred. Olivia looked like she was about to cry. Fred leaned over Josh's shoulder and said, "It's going to be alright, we going to a big military base with lots of soldiers." this didn't seem to help. Fred then swung his backpack over and took out a picture of him and his girlfriend. "Listen to this, one day when you and your brother were playing outside, this lady said that you were the prettiest girl in the neighborhood." She cracked a smiled and so did Fred. Emily looked relieved, and mouthed 'thank you' and the trucked seemed to be full. Emily looked over Fred's shoulder, and said, "It looks like they finished with the truck too." Fred tried to look over, but his head couldn't turn that far, "good" There was still a group of people behind the entrance of the truck. There seemed to be about eight people left, and he overheard the soldiers talking about what they should do. "The trucks are already overstuffed, what are we going to do?" after a moment of silence, one of the soldiers walked up to the group, "Do any of you have a large SUV?" and the group looked around. Then a man in the back said that he did. "Can you fit eight people in your SUV? and can it make it to Bolivar?" then man said yes and said, "If you want to go, then you're going to have to get that SUV" Then man then put down his stuff and ran for his house. Olivia looked over at Fred, a little concerned. "It's alright, I think that guy lives around the corner." They then saw the guy make a turn and drove up to the group. They all gathered around the doors, entering the SUV. Once they had finished getting in, without their luggage, all three vehicles moved out.

Less than two hours of being on the road they had made it to the military base. They pulled into the entrance and made a turn left into the Walmart that was next to the National Guard's base. Then the leader looked at the group in Fred's truck, "Okay, there are cots and food in that Walmart. You will make your way to the entrance, and you'll be processed from there." The truck stopped in front of the store and they got off. There was a line already formed, and they got in line. The line was slow moving, and Fred could see that there were people in white hazmat suits checking people out. After about an hour, it was their turn, and Emily was the first to get checked out. She tried to bring her daughter with her, but they insisted that Olivia be examined separately. After Olivia, Josh went, and then Fred, and after Fred came out, Emily and the kids were waiting for him. As they stood by the exit of the examination station, a soldier with a clipboard asked them if they were together. Emily and Fred then looked at each other and said 'yes'. Then the soldier asked them to follow him and they walked over to a group of three cots. Emily then told Josh and Olivia they they were going to share a cot. Then Fred sat his stuff on his cot. Emily sat her stuff down, and asked one of the people next to them if the food was ready, they said that there hasn't been a food call yet. Emily then had a look of worry on her face, and asked her kids if they wanted an energy bar, they said no. Emily then sat next to her kids, and it was just the four of them.

Addy had been walking and dredging for what seemed like an eternity. Following the signs, but staying off the beaten path of the well traveled roads using back roads and shortcuts through sparsely wooded areas to avoid any unwanted contact with people or whatever the people were becoming. She approached where it seemed the military had a large group of people held up, Addy would watch from seclusion and once the vehicles finished loading the people aboard and moving out she would follow as closely behind the convoy/caravan as she could always keeping atleast the tail vehicle in eye sight. She would tactically avoid a few of the infected people to avoid making much noise and didn't want to lose sight of that vehicle that was for sure. Addison followed them all the way to one of their designated safe points. Once the last vehicle was inside their walls she scaled a tree to get a better view of what was going on inside the walls. She watched her curiosity peaking.

Finally Addison climbed down from the tree once she had gathered enough intel from inside. She then doubled back a bit and exited to the main road that led to the safe zone. She moved all the way to the gates. She would begin to knock on the gates with her foot. "Hello! Open up!" She said excitedly. Hoping once inside she could get more information on exactly what was happening! And what the government was doing to rectify it. She would continue audibly signalling to those inside by yelling in. "Come on guys! Open up!! Please Open up!" She continued anxiously awaiting to get granted access to the compound of an obvious makeshift design. "You going to wait till I'm mauled by one of those sick folks before opening up?" She teased knowing she could handle her own one on one with them or even smaller groups. but that was not the point. "Addison Carver! You can call me Addy! Now would ya open them damn gates already! C'mon!" She huffed angrily turning away from the gate turning so she could lean her back against it and watch her six until the gates opened.

Finally after sometime the gates opened and Addison was escorted inside by two armed guards that led her over to where the new intakes were being processed. Addison watched on curiously. "So anyone know whats going on here?" she asked openly and to noone in particular. "Not much of a news buff so I'm lost in the situation.. all I know is people are spazzing out and attacking people for no reason!" She said with a sigh nodding her head clenching her backpack tightly to her chest.

After some time just sitting around, and watching more people come in, they heard the call for food. A military officer with a megaphone, stood on top of a table and gave out directions, "Everyone on this side of the store, will line up first..." as he pointed towards the left side of the store, "Then this section, then that section. Please do this in an orderly fashion and wait for our signal for your section to get up. Thank You." and he indicated that the left side would go first, then the middle, then the right. Fred's group would be going second. "Okay, you guys have to eat. When we're done, maybe we can play a game or something" After a while, it was their sections turn to get up and eat. Fred looked to Emily and said, "You guys go up, I'll hang back and will watch out stuff." Emily gave him sympathetic eyes, and said, "Are you sure, it could be a while before they call again.", "I'm sure, I'd rather have our stuff than not be hungry." Then the kids and her walked to the line. He was one of the few people left in the row.
