Letting the girls drop their bags into the sand alongside him and the beach tote bag the group home had sent with him. The only things it really contained was some towels and an emergency blood supply just in case the vampires were to get out of hand. He, Andrei, and Katarina were on the older side of the vampires that worked at the group home. But even they could lose control if the temptation was high enough. Kat was an example of that. "Fine, I'll watch your things. But I can't promise they'll be here when you return!" he called after them, unable to help the grin from turning up his lips. Both girls dove into the water with relative ease, and Leo let out a low chuckle with a shake of his head. Leo glanced over when he felt someone lower themselves into the sand alongside him. "Yeah, perfect," he commented, "As perfect as three bloodthirsty vamps and three oblivious humans can be anyway." His eyes were naturally drawn to Lexi as she came through the surface of that water, doing a spin. She was an interesting case when it came to the group homes, one of the few who's messed up tattoo was more due to her own choices rather than it not showing up correctly or something like that. In a way, Leo found that entirely interesting. It was a spit in the face of the society that was so built around what he thought was a pointless construct, and he was into it. Andrei shrugged and pulled off his shirt before following the girls and Tyler into the water. Leo ran a hand through his hair, contemplating whether or not he wanted to be damp in the ride back to the prison. But they seemed to be having fun, and he wanted a part of it. Leo removed his shirt and grabbed a towel from the bag with the intention of moving it closer to the water so he could dry off later. But as he made his way to the ocean, Katarina had decided to take her leave. "You okay?" he asked her, handing the towel. She seemed to need it more than he did. Not really satisfied with her response but not wanting to push it, Leo let her go and waded into the ocean. Swimming out towards the girls, he sunk into the water until it was just below his shoulder and said to Kenzie. "Sure, I don't see why not. The sunset is gorgeous this time of year."

Lexi had to admit that the trip to the beach had been a fantastic idea. She was thankful that it was a small group, too. Less people for the workers to mind, for sure, but not many other 'guests' had signed up to go. Lex thought that was a little weird, but who was she to complain? Besides, she found that she actually liked Kenzie and Tyler. They were fucked-up-tattoo buds, for sure, though Lex hadn't asked about either of their stories yet. Mainly because despite her tattoo being on display, she didn't want them to judge her for her willingly fucking it up. It was a strange emotion to feel, but she felt it.

Lexi noticed that Kat left the water just as Leo decided to enter it. Deciding to show off a little bit, she stretched onto her back and floated on the water for a few seconds before turning and diving under. A relatively good swimmer, she held her breath as she explored the semi shallow water, twisting and turning here and there. She came up for air and decided to go a bit further this time, though still not into the depths of the ocean.

Once underwater again, she was twisting one way when she felt it. A sudden tearing in her side as she'd gone too low. A gasp escaped her and she swallowed water, and she came up to the surface choking. It appeared like she was drowning, as only once you got closer could you see the wound and the blood coming from the decently sized tear. "Fuck!"

Things were going so well, even with Kat. He grinned as she sent a small wave in his direction, making a face that he didn't care if she saw. "It was perfect, thank you." He grinned. "Hey, where ya going?" He called after her in a teasing way as she got out of the water, moving to sit on a towel Leo gave her. "Had enough of the water for one day?" He laughed, turning towards the others, watching Tyler for a moment as he stared at Kat. They just needed to kiss already, or something.

Chuckling to himself, he was just about to agree about the sunset when it happened. He'd barely been paying Alexis any attention outside of making sure she was alive, but then she came up gasping for air. Immediately he went into savior mode, throwing his arms out one after the other and swimming in her direction. He grabbed her and held her close to him as he swam towards the shore, not noticing her wound or the blood in the water.

He finally got to the sand and laid her down as gently as he could. And then he noticed it. The wound was still oozing blood, and blood was all over him. He stiffened, looking between her wound and her blood all over his front. It wouldn't have been a super huge deal except there seemed to be so much of it, and the scent slapped him in the face all at once. She was still spitting up water, laying on her side, but he couldn't move.

Mackenzie smiled when Leo agreed to them watching the sunset. His comment on it being a beautiful sight only heightened her excitement. She loved the sunset but the thought of watching it on a beach just sounded even more wonderful. She moved out a little further into the crystal blue water, it was nearly clear enough to see straight through. She could feel her toes squish into the wet sand as she walked and for a minute she felt actual peace. That was until Lexi suddenly let out a gasping sound and she spun around to see the girl...drowning?! "Lexi!" she called out, trying to wade through the waves to the girl but Andrei beat her there.

She rushed after him out of the water, noticing the blood right away. Grabbing her dry shirt from nearby she pressed it down on the cut. It was a pretty big cut but she couldn't tell if it'd need stitches. She turned to Andrei but he seemed to be freaked out which struck her as odd since he didn't seem queasy when he helped at the house that day she'd cut herself. "She's choking! Someone do something!" she yelled, her hands still putting pressure on the gash that was bleeding through the shirt. She was starting to panic a little bit.

Tyler couldn't help but noticed how Kat seemed to react to his presence and it kinda baffled him. Had he done or said something since their initial meeting? He couldn't understand why she would seem so uncomfortable by him but maybe he'd been high and blurted out something inappropriate. Either way, he made it a point to look away rather quickly. There was no way he had a chance in hell with her. Why would he even think he did anyway? Not only was she way out of his league but their circumstances were shit and she clearly didn't like him.

He ran a hand through his curls, shaking out some of the water as he did. "What the hell..." he muttered when he heard the commotion of the others. His attention turned to them quickly and he sprung into action, following close behind Mackenzie. "Shit. What are we supposed to do?" he asked rather loudly before helping however he could to get Lexi to cough up the water. "Okay. It's okay. We got you," he reassured her as he helped her. "What the hell are you doing, man!? Help her!" he yelled when he noticed Andrei frozen in place.

Licking the excess blood from her lips, Katarina twisted the top back on to her flask and slid it into the bag. Hearing Andrei call out to her, the brunette rolled her eyes at him and responded, "Enough for me, I'm no mermaid." Her tone was teasing and sarcastic, dripping with a bit of irony that only the vampires would understand. Kat had been around for a decently long time, over a hundred years. But that certainly didn't mean that she knew everything about the world. So the idea that if vampires exited, mermaids might as well was interesting to her. Hell, maybe there were even werewolves and witches out there somewhere. Letting out a light laugh, Katarina pulled the elastic from her damp hair to braid it in hopes that when it dried, it would be wavy. Even though she was locked away from the world, she could at least look pretty for herself.

A panicked shout from the water caught her attention, and instinctively the vampire shot to her feet with lightning speed. Her ocean blue eyes singled in on Andrei, following his movements as he pulled Alexis from the water. Kat took a few steps towards them, but the overwhelming scent of blood attacking her senses brought her to an abrupt halt. Almost immediately, her fangs painfully poked through her gums. Her throat felt dry as though she had swallowed the very sand she was standing on. She was thirsty, so thirsty that she wanted nothing more than to sink her fangs into the bleeding girl and drain her. The few shreds of willpower she had were the only things that kept her from doing so. Katarina could feel a bit of panic rise in her system, her vampiric nature threatening to overcome her humanity. Kat turned her back to the rest of the group, grabbing her flask before moving to the edge of the beach with lightning speed.

"Andrei, Leo," she murmured, knowing that their heightened hearing would pick up her words where the humans could not. There was panic in her tone, something she knew was apparent to her friends. Ripping the top off of the flask, Katarina downed the rest of its contents before haphazardly throwing it to the ground. "Get it under control please." She gripped her fists so tightly that she could feel her fingernails digging into the flesh of her palms. That much blood could make even an experienced vampire clam up, and Kat was seconds away from losing control and going on a bloodsucking rampage.

Leonardo moved around in the water with relative ease, enjoying the feeling of the cool ripples against his sun-warmed skin. Even as a boy, many years ago, he loved to swim. There was a lake near his parents' summer home that he would spends hours in. Seeing how long he could hold his breath, making rudimentary boats out of wood and leaves, racing his friends back and forth, all were pastimes Leo enjoyed while spending the summer there. It was always a fight to get him out of the water each day, and to get him to go home to the village after the summer was over. His mother had taken up calling him Petit Poisson, or little fish. It was one of his favorite memories from childhood, and one that he held on to. Leo believed it was better to remember those times rather than his final moments with his parents.

Alexis's movements caught the vampire's eye, and he couldn't help but watch her move through the water. Unexpected given her fiery personality, she moved rather gracefully through the water as though she too had spent a lot of time swimming. Leonardo grinned as she dipped under water, absentmindedly moving towards her. Lexi was rather magnetic, in more ways than one. He often found himself drawn to her, but chose to keep that to himself on most occasions. Humans were fragile, and vampires were generally....not. With that thought in mind, Leo moved backwards towards the shore, floating on his back. However, he was only there for a few moments before the sound of coughing and the smell of blood overtook his senses.

Almost immediately, Leonardo flipped over to stand up in the water, spinning to face Alexis. She looked panicked, but he barely had a chance to take stock of the situation before Andrei grabbed her and took her ashore. Leo wasn't far behind him, crouching down by the bleeding girl. The scent hit him like a ton of bricks, and he flinched back a bit. Her blood was interesting in its aroma, like nothing he had ever experienced before. Andrei seemed to be frozen in place, potentially losing control. It was strange to see the older vampire incapacitated. It seemed as though the only reason Leo was able to keep going was because of the panic he felt for the girl's well-being.

Katarina's voice caught his attention, her strained words leading him to believe that both of his friends were trying to maintain control. "Andrei, can you go make sure Kat is alright?" Leo said, reaching over to grab the towel from the sand. Using his vampire strength, he ripped a shred off of it and wrapped it tightly around Lexi's wound. He moved her into a sitting position and patted her gently on the back, hoping that it would help her cough up the rest of the water. Glancing at Tyler and Kenzie, he put on an authoritative voice and said, "We need to get her back to the infirmary. The keys are in the bag. Can one of you go pull the car around?"

Alexis had no idea what the hell had tore her leg open, but one minute she was going under and the next she was on the sand. Her vision was blurring, but she could recognize Andrei above her. At least, she was pretty sure it was him, but another surge of pain hit her and she cried out, squeezing her eyes shut. "God DAMN it!" The cut was deep and long, and bleeding heavily. Something had gotten her good.

"Make it stop..." She groaned, twitching as she felt something press on the wound. Opening her eyes, she looked over and saw Mackenzie, and Tyler beyond her. She couldn't make out what they were saying anymore; she felt as though she were underwater still, unable to hear or process what was going on. She blinked to try and bring things into focus, but it only helped for a few seconds. Leo appeared, and she looked over to see him ripping what looked like a towel, wrapping the fabric around her leg to keep it from bleeding.

It hurt like a son of a bitch, but he helped her to a sitting position and slapped her back. Water came up and she spat it into the sand, drawing in precious air. "Jesus." Drawing in a few more deep breaths, she leaned against Leo as he instructed one of the others to bring the car around. Some of her vision had come back, and she saw that Andrei had disappeared, though she found him a few yards away with Kat, both of their backs turned to them.

And then her world went black.

The home put the vampires through a half assed training for moments like this, but for some reason, Andrei froze. It wasn't like him, and he hated that he'd done so, putting all of the humans in danger in that moment. Kat could very well go over the edge in a matter of seconds, and then the three vampires would probably have to go on the run. He definitely wouldn't ditch her or leave her, and if she had to go, so did he. He thought Leo felt the same, but god damnit, he didn't want that.

The other two humans appeared beside the bleeding girl, and then Leo was there too. He heard Kat's whispered words, and when Leo told him to go check on her, he snapped out of his reverie. Keeping his apology to himself, knowing it wouldn't do any good to anybody, he turned on a dime and sped over to Kat. Placing a hand on her shoulder, he grimaced, knowing the pain that she was feeling. "We need to go to the car. If you need to take a different way back, so be it, but you had better show up." Mostly he was trying to lighten the mood, telling her that he'd chase her down if she ran, but the moment was lost.

"Come on." His tone was softer this time, and some of the blood scent was gone now that it was masked with the towel. "We can't lose it in front of them." He glanced over his shoulder, noticing that someone had left the scene to go grab the car. "Tell us what you need to do. I'll help Leo with Alexis if he needs it." He gave her shoulder a gentle squeeze, and then turned back, the old Andrei back. "I can help you, Leo." He nodded towards Alexis, and then to the human who hadn't left to get the car. "Gather everything up. We have to go back."

Tyler stood up from his position at Lexi's side ready to yell at the man again as he stood like a damn statue. Leo's words snapped him out of it though and he watched as Andrei went to check on Kat. She did seem to really hate blood. If only he knew. "Yeah, I'll get the car," he said with a nod. He was glad at least someone was doing something useful and he knew that he should help too. He grabbed the keys from the bag and took off, darting for the car as quick as he could. He couldn't help but worry what was going on when he wasn't nearby. Not that he didn't trust everyone else to take care of her but he'd grown fond of Lexi as a friend and he still hadn't fully proseced what had happened. At first, he didn't even realize how deep that cut had been and so he'd assumed some band-aids would fix it. Now he wasn't so sure that was the case.

When he pulled back up he jumped out and helped to load Lexi in the van. "Is she gonna be okay?" he asked getting in the driver seat to take them to the house. He waited so Kenzie and whoever else could climb into the third row. He knew they needed to get back to the house fast so that they could take care of her and once everyone was inside the van he pulled off. "I'm going as fast as I can, Kenz! We are almost there!" he yelled in as he heard Kenzie freaking out in the back. He was probably going twenty over the speed limit but he didn't care, his flashers were on and it wasn't like there were many others on the road. Soon they were pulling into the driveway of the house.

Kenzie was freaking out as everything happened. It all started to feel like it was moving in slow motion. Tyler jumped up and took off but it looked like he was barely walking to the parking lot nearby. Leo's yelling was muffled in her ears and Lexi's blood had soaked through the shirt she'd been holding on the wound. The blood was all over the place and honestly Kenzie only snapped back into the reality of the moment when Andrei made the comment of gathering the stuff up. She nodded and did it, putting most of it into a backpack though she wasn't sure who it belonged to. She picked it up just as Tyler pulled the van up and climbed into the back row. "Let's go! We have to get her back! She's not awake!" she yelled in a panic to which Tyler promptly replied that he was trying.

Her mind suddenly began to race, the whole thing replaying in her mind. She couldn't help but recall how Kat seemed to act and Andrei as well. She knew he didn't get queazy from blood so why had he frozen the way he did? After all, he had helped her that day when she had gotten hurt. Kat seemed to run every time blood was present which wasn't uncommon for people but still, it struck her as weird. Plus, she could help but feel like Kat had moved rather quickly away from the group, kinda like Andrei had when he caught her that day. Maybe it was her mind from all the commotion, playing tricks on her or something. She looked up as they pulled into the driveway, glad that they were finally home and able to hopefully get Lexi some help.

Sharp canine teeth began to poke into Katarina's bottom lip, unable to keep them at bay any longer. The sweet metallic taste of the blood she had drank from her flask moment ago was beginning to irritate her mouth, the drying burning sensation crawling up from her throat. She heard voices talking, but couldn't focus on the words they were saying. She had to use all her willpower on keep her humanity in the forefront and her vampirism on the back burner. Whatever government-created so-called 'training' they went through at the group home definitely wasn't sufficient enough. They didn't realize how murderous vampires could be. Or maybe they did, and that's why they chose to have bloodsuckers as their prison guards.

Katarina was pulled from her thoughts by a hand being placed on her shoulder. She turned slightly to glance at Andrei, his familiar place helping her stay grounded. "I'll make my own way back. I need to run off some steam," she answered through clenched teeth. That was code for 'hunt so helpless animals and drink all of their blood' in much... nicer terms. The softness in Andrei's voice and the slightly dissipated scent of the blood calmed Kat's nerves ever so slightly. "Thank you, both of you," she murmured, placing her hand on top of his on her shoulder. "I'll be fine. I'll meet you all back at the group home." Her icy blue eyes followed him as he turned back towards the group, glossing over Leo and Lexi, Kenzie and Tyler. As far as humans go, they weren't that bad. But another inhale of blood-scented air, and Katarina was distracted once again.

She waited until the sounds of the car disappeared away from the beach, until she was sure that no one could see her out the car window. Letting out a held breath, Kat felt her fangs fully extend before moving at speeds nearly indistinguishable to the human eye into the forest. She turned off that part of her that was compassionate, the piece that fought so hard to remain human in one way or another. All she was then was a cold-blooded killer. Katarina ripped her way through fauna of all sizes, not settling until she had sunk her fangs into the carotid artery of a doe. Animal blood wasn't as effective or as long-lasting as human blood, but it would quench her thirst for the time being. The brunette let the lifeless body of the deer fall to the forest floor with a thud, finally feeling her muscles relax and her fangs retreat.

Wiping her mouth on her fore arm, Kat glanced down at her blood-covered body with distaste. For as long as she had been a vampire, she had never gotten used to the sight of herself covered in blood. Rinsing off as much as she could in a nearby stream, she took a deep breath to calm her nerves before racing at vampire speeds back towards the group home. She paused by the parking lot, making sure the van had been returned. It was practically empty on the premises, everyone either in their rooms or milling about the recreation area. Katarina wasn't exactly the most stealthy of vampires, but she was able to make it to her room without running into anyone. "God, I must look gruesome," she muttered to herself as she closed her door behind her. Without even taking a moment to glance at herself in the mirror, Katarina showered away the rest of the animal blood. The bloody clothes were stuffed into her hamper with the intent to deal with them later. For now, Kat needed to relax and destress.

Leonardo was briefly aware of Andrei moving acros the beach towards their female friend, glancing up to see him put his hand on her shoulder in an attempt to calm her down. It seemed to be working for the most part, and Leo could trust that Andrei would keep Katarina in check for the time being. The last thing they needed would be for one of them to lose control. When it came to Leo, Andrei, and Kat, they were pretty much a package deal. Relative to their true ages, the trio hadn't been friends for that long. They had, however, formed a bond that was intensely strong. So much so that if one of them were forced to leave their current group home for any reason, the others would follow without hesitation. At least, that's what he believed anyway. Leo trusted both Kat and Andrei with his life, and he hoped they could say the same about him.

The sounds of Alexis' utterance and deep breaths as well as the pressure of her weight against his body pulled Leonardo from his thoughts, returning his attention to the girl in his arms. Leaning down so that his lips were near her ear, he murmured, "Don't worry, it'll be alright. I've got you." In any other situation, Leo would have questioned why he felt so protective over Lexi, why his usually pragmatism had been switched out for optimistic consoling. But there really wasn't any time to think about that. Instead, he simply held her and kept her stable while Tyler went for the car, Andrei returned, and Mackenzie helped him gather up their belongings. The sounds of a car's engine approached, signalling to Leo that it was time to get a move on. "Alright, ma chéri, time to get your back home."

Slipping his arms underneath Alexis to support her weight in a way that wouldn't agitate the wound, the male vampire easily lifted her as though she weighed no more than a feather. He placed her in the center row of the vehicle, sliding in along side her. He could hear her heart beat, and was monitoring it closely for any changes the entire car ride back. "Deep breaths, both of you," Leo murmured, the same authoritative tone taking over his voice, "Panicking will help no one. Especially not Alexis." For a moment, his usual charming, upbeat nature was replace with a serious and protective tone. Something about Lexi changed him, made him better. He just couldn't put his finger on it. Once they had pulled into the drive, Leo wasted no time taking the girl to the infirmary. He lay her on a medical cot, gently pushing a stray strand of hair from her face before the medics pushed him away into the corner. He couldn't explain why, but he wasn't about to leave her side.

"Alexis, what are you doing?!"

Even the sound of her mother's frantic voice didn't stop Alexis. All she could focus on was the singular word her brother had uttered to her on the phone: Run. Though she had no idea where to go or what to do, she knew that she had to get rid of this fucking tattoo. Hidden away in her room, she hadn't given much thought to what she was going to do. She'd started off with a few scratches, but they weren't deep enough to get to the ink ingrained in her arm. The more she scratched at it, the more frantic she felt, until she'd found something else to destroy it.

The instrument was sharp, and the searing pain was unlike any other she'd ever felt, but that one word kept repeating itself over and over in her head. She had to destroy it. She had to get away. She'd barely heard the sounds of her parents knocking on the door, and even once her father broke through the lock and swung the door wide, she didn't look up. By now her tattoo-- her entire forearm-- was destroyed. They were too late.

That was the first time Alexis had dreamed about what happened since it'd actually happened. She had no recollection of the ride home, no recollection of the sweet words Leo had whispered into her ear or the fact that Kat had chosen not to ride back with them. When her eyes finally opened some time later, she was staring up at a dark ceiling. The lights were off, her leg fucking hurt, and she couldn't shake the leftover feelings from her memory dream. A quick glance at her arm showed her that the scars were indeed still there, and she grimaced as she tried to sit up to look around.

As it turned out, Leo didn't need his help, but that didn't surprise Andrei. The vampire could hear what Leo whispered into Alexis' ear, and it gave him pause, his head turning just slightly so that he could see them out of the corner of his eye. Saying nothing, since he didn't think Mackenzie had heard him, he couldn't help but smile softly to himself. The smile was short lived as he heard the van approaching, and the four of them headed to the vehicle. The drive was tense but not quiet, at least not from the humans.

Once back at the group home, he flung the door open and stepped out, breathing in the fresh air that wasn't tainted with the scent of Alexis' blood. Leo immediately took the girl to the infirmary, and since Kat wasn't there, it was up to Andrei to ensure the other two got back to their rooms. "You'll be the first to know when she comes to, okay?" He looked between them, feeling his own fangs aching to make an appearance. "It might not be for some time, but trust me. The medical staff here is... well, they're fantastic." He tried to smile in their direction, though it probably fell flat.

"Kat will also be back shortly. Come on. I'll walk you guys inside." Shutting the door after them, he grabbed the keys from the ignition and stuffed them into his pocket, leading the way to the front door. He started down the hallway in the opposite direction of the medical area, though his steps slowed as they reached the bedrooms area. Turning to them, he studied them for a quick second. "Are you both okay?"

Tyler had been trying to hide the fact that he was freaking out the whole ride home. He was sure he'd done a bad job since he was speeding and yelling and Kenzie to chill but this was a high stress situation and he wasn't used to those. Especially when his friend was unconcious and bleeding out (maybe a little dramatic?). When they'd arrived home he helped get stuff out of the car and watched as Leo carried Alexis into the house, unsure where she was being taken. He wanted to follow but Andrei insisted that she needed her rest. "What the hell was that back there, man? You just stood there like you'd seen a ghost for 5 minutes. She could've di-" he stopped himself when he saw the look on Mackenzie's face. Shaking his head he muttered 'forget it' under his breath and walked away towards the bathroom near his room.

Needing to cool down and shower after the hectic day, he wasted no time in turning on the water and stepping in, his body being supported by the cool wall. The warm water rushed over his body, some of it turning slightly red from the blood that remained on his arms. After a while, he scrubbed himself clean and stepped out to dry off before pulling on a pair of shorts and a t-shirt. He went to his room and found the last of his stash, rolling a joint from what was left before making his way outside to the tables in the courtyard area. Tyler looked around before lighting it, to be sure no one was watching too closely. Once he felt like he was alone he took a few hits and leaned back in the chair he'd sat down in, his head up towards the sky as he blew the smoke out.

Kenzie's mind had been swirling the whole ride home. All of her curiousness over her time in the house had caused her to make mental notes of the strange happenings. The weird speed some of the workers seemed to show when they thought no one was paying attention, the way a lot of them sometimes froze at the sight of blood and she'd started to notice the presence of noises at night rustling through the house. On top of all of this, there had been some people who just disappeared from the home. It was chalked up to them trying to escape and likely drowning in the waters surrounding the island but Kenzie wasn't buying it. It did concern her that most people just shrugged it off. Something weird was going on and she was determined to figure out what. This wasn't just something she was willing to sweep under the rug anymore. "Please take care of her!" she called out to Leo.

Walking in as everyone else did she began to question if Alexis would be okay but Andrei answered that among other questions she had. One being: where the hell was Kat? It was like he was in her head or covering for something. She was a little startled when Tyler spoke up, his voice was filled with frustration. She shot him a look to calm down and he seemed to understand but that didn't make him any happier. Instead, he just walked away in a huff without another word. Her eyes traveled to Andrei and she shook her head at him. "Are you okay? He's right, you know? You did sorta freeze up back there and you don't exactly strike me as someone with a weak stomach for that sorta stuff," she said, her decision to comment a little more bold than she normally was. She had been content with the idea they would take care of Alexis, she wasn't sure why but she just felt Leo was trustworthy even if he was in on whatever secret the workers here had.

Finally feeling as though she hadn't swallowed a ball of sandpaper from thirst, Katarina felt the muscles in her neck and shoulders relax a bit. Her room was her safe space, a place where she felt as though she didn't have to worry about holding back, didn't have to hide who she was. Like it or not, the vampires who worked at the group home couldn't be their real selves, not in front of the humans anyway. If they knew what the people were who were hired to protect them, they wouldn't feel very safe. Slipping into a pair of ripped skinny jeans, Kat pulled her hair into a French braid down the back of her head before donning a heather grey t-shirt and a pair of white high top sneakers. One look in the mirror, she certainly looked normal on the outside. But the inside was a whole different story.

A beeping noise came from the top of her dresser, and Katarina looked over to see her phone screen lit up. It was a reminder that it was her turn to patrol the grounds, make sure none of their charges were trying to escape. It was a rather dull task. After all, the campus was strategically placed on an island far enough away from the mainland that a swim would be a death mission. The only way off the island was a drawbridge kept up except for social trips off the island and bringing people on to it. So, it was unlikely anyone would tried to escape. Nevertheless, the higher-ups gave them strict policies to follow, and Kat knew when to stay in her own lane. With a heavy sigh, she grabbed her bag off her dresser, slung it across her body, and pushed out her room.

Andrei and Leo were charming, charismatic. They could walk through the halls and know everyone's name, say hi to them with those charming smiles, and everyone just loves them. Katarina on the other hand, she kept her head down and tried to stay to the shadows so no one noticed her. And thankfully, no one did. She slipped through the front door and into the courtyard area, pulling a cigarette out of her bag and placing it between her lips. Digging through her purse with one hand, Kat searched for a lighter but found none. A familiar smell floated from nearby, assaulting her nostrils with the strong scent. Glancing around, her icy blue eyes zeroed in on the smoke rising from a nearby seating area. She walked over to it, her steps nearly silent. As soon as she got close enough, the smoke revealed another scent, something sweeter. Katarina wanted to turn and run, but she was already too close. So instead, she held the cigarette between her fingers, tilting her head as she looked at Tyler. "Got a light?"

Leonardo sat by in the corner on a stool, his elbows resting on his knees and his chin resting on his folded-together hands. He watched with careful chocolate brown eyes as the nurses flitted around Alexis, make sure their movements were nothing but helpful. A stainless steel cup was placed on the counter next to him, one of the medics shooting him a wary look. The nurses and infirmary workers were some of the only human employees of the group home. After all, sending a group of vampires into a room with bloody, injured humans just didn't seem like a good idea. Nevertheless, these humans knew about the bloodsuckers among them, no matter how much they tried to ignore it.

Leo's eyes drifted from the cup to the nurse who had sat it there, looking for some sort of explanation. She simply said, "It's fresh from this morning," before moving on to another task. The male vampire watched her for a moment, glancing at Lexi once more before picking up the glass and taking a sip. The viscous liquid was slightly bitter, but nothing he wasn't used to after all these years. Looking down into the crimson blood, Leo let out a deep sigh and threw back the rest of it, careful not to let any drip down the edges of his mouth. He caught sight of the scars on Lexi's forearm, furrowing his brow in confusion for a moment. Was that what had gotten her sent here? Did she choose this as opposed to most of the others who didn't have the option?

What felt like hours later, but really wasn't all that long, Leonardo sat on the same stool in the corner. The lights, however, had been turned off as to not disturb those resting. The metal cup had been emptied and rinse, no remnants of blood remaining. Leo had learned over the years not to question where the blood came from and to appreciate it. After all, he had seen what starved vampires looked like, the paths of wreckage they left in their wake. He didn't want to become that. A small shifting sound caught his attention, his eyes darting up and landing on a now awake Lexi as she attempted to sit up. Leo walked over to her quickly. "Here, let me help," he murmured, helping her adjust on the bed so that she was propped into a sitting position. "How are you feeling? Should I call the nurse?"

Ouch.

The lights were off, and Lexi could barely see anything. Weren't places like this supposed to have night lights, or those lights that were dimmer than regular ones? Seems like having no light could be dangerous in a place like this. She grimaced and groaned as she struggled to sit up, placing her hands flat against to table to help. Hearing a familiar male voice, her movements stilled, but only for a moment as Leo came into view and he helped her to a sitting position.

"No, no, I'm fine." She waved off his concern, shaking her head to confirm. "I mean, I'm not fine, but I'm fine. I'm alive." The realness of the situation struck her then, and she glanced down at her bandaged leg, squinting a little bit to see them. "Jesus." A soft, almost uneasy laugh escaped her, and she closed her eyes for a moment. Both memories of the dream and the incident at the beach flooded her mind, causing her eyes to jerk back open and her body to stiffen.

"Fuck me." Blowing out a puff of air, she glanced at Leo, hoping he couldn't see her sheepish expression. "I could use some water, though, if there's some around. The drinkable kind, you know. Not the beachy kind."

Andrei watched as Tyler stalked off, having only stopped his word vomit because of a look Mackenzie had given him. Truthfully, Andrei was grateful for that look, because he didn't have answers for the questions and statements Tyler was throwing in his direction. But maybe Tyler leaving Andrei alone with Mackenzie wasn't the best option either, as she settled her gaze on him and asked if he was okay. She pointed out that he didn't strike her as the type to have a weak stomach when it came to blood, and though he normally had an answer for everything, he didn't have one for her.

Fuck.

"I just... froze." He finished lamely, hating himself for how he sounded. With a sigh, he reached up and ran his hands through his hair, glancing around the empty hallway. He could hear the gentle sounds of the rest of the humans sleeping, but he didn't think he could just ditch Mackenzie and expect her to do the same. Not after what they'd just witnessed; had he been human, he probably would have been a little wound up, too.

"I'm not proud of it, but we have great nursing staff here. I'm sure she'll be back to her sarcastic self by tomorrow." He was trying to bring some humor into the situation, though he wasn't sure it would work. He hesitated, then offered the human girl before him a small yet slightly stressed out smile. "Want to go somewhere with me?" Without waiting for an answer, he started off down the hallway, glancing back once to see if she'd follow. If she did, he would lead her through the abandoned hallways and up some stairs until they reached a room that obviously wasn't inhabited. He made his way to the window and opened it, climbing out onto the roof.

Lifting the joint to his lips and taking a drag, Tyler scanned the area. He wasn't looking for anything in particular, just taking in what little scenery there was. He blew out a cloud of smoke before hearing a bit of shuffling behind him and sitting up straight so that he could turn around and see who it was. "Oh, hey... Are you uh-are you okay?" he questioned as he fished in his pocket for the lighter. He held it out to her and for a moment his eyes met hers but he didn't allow them to linger too long, feeling it made her uncomfortable. "I noticed you kinda freaked out earlier. Not a fan of blood?" he asked, letting out a light chuckle.

He realized he might've made things awkward by asking about the blood thing so he spoke up again quickly. "I used to play sports so blood was part of the package but it can be nerve-wracking in a high-pressure situation. No big deal," he added, trying to break the tension that seemed to be between them. He wasn't sure why but he got the feeling she didn't exactly want to be around him. He took another drag from the joint before putting it out. It was only halfway burned but since it was the last of what he had it was maybe a good idea to save it. It wasn't like there would be any place to find more around this prison of an island.

"Did I do something? You seem to be kinda tense around me but I don't get that vibe from you with other people. I just wasn't sure if I offended you someway or something," he asked curiously, not holding back on his question. He genuinely wanted to know especially since she seemed to avoid him while he felt some sort of weird pull towards her. At first, he thought maybe it was in his head but as time went on he realized she seemed to go out of her way to avoid being in his presence and he couldn't recall anything that had happened to cause it.

Mackenzie wasn't normally the type to be so bold but with everything that had happened since her arrival at this place, she couldn't bite her toungue anymore. Once they got alone and she hounded him for answers, she noticed the look on his face change. As if he was trying to avoid her questions for a moment. His excuse of freezing wasn't near good enough for her. She'd seen him act pretty quickly in situations before including when he appeared out of thin air and caught her before she could smack the pavement. It just didn't add up to her. She didn't get a chance to question up on it, he chimed in again saying how the nursing staff would take care of Lexi and then asked her to follow him before walking off.

Kenzie hesitated for a moment, unsure if she should or not but she ultimately decided there was no harm in it. Walking behind him she entered a room which seemed almost completely empty aside from the bed and dresser in it. It had awful floral wall paper but it was sorta faded due to the age of the home. Her eyes flickered to him as he climbed out of a window and she followed, grabbing his hand to support pulling herself out onto the roof. She couldn't help but wish she'd found this spot a while ago. It was perfect for writing, relaxing, or just taking in the view.

The sun was just starting to go down as she turned to look at him. "It's no sunset on the beach but I'll admit it's beautiful. Do you come up here a lot?" she asked curiously. She wondered why he brought her up here in the first place but the fresh air and sound of the ocean in the distance did bring a sort of calm over her. "I don't get what makes another person take a job like this. To keep other people like them prisioner. I mean, I assume you don't have a tattoo either or else you'd be off living your happily ever after with your soulmate instead of sitting on this roof with me...right?" she continued, not letting up on her curiosity.

A light breeze caught Katarina's hair, pulling it back away from her face and fluttering it over her shoulders. Her icy blue eyes met his hazels for a moment before she quickly dropped her gaze, unable to hold it for any long period of time. She forced herself to take those few steps over to the sating area, lowering herself into a chair just opposite of Tyler. The chairs were close enough that her knees just barely brushed against his, sending miniature shock waves through her body. "Yeah, I'm okay," she responded, taking the lighter from his outstretched hand. Placing the cigarette delicately between her pink lips, she lit it and inhaled, savoring the burning heat as it filled her lungs. Kat let out a breath chuckle at his question, shaking her head as she looked up at him for a moment. "You don't know the half of it."

Kat had never really considered telling their secret before. After all, it wasn't solely her business to tell, and it affected more than just her if the humans found out. Something made her want to tell Tyler, but she knew it was unsafe. Not just for her, but for everyone including Tyler. The curly-haired brunette quickly spoke up again, catching the vampire's attention quite easily. She took another inhale from the cigarette, using the bitterness of its smell and the strength to cancel out the sweetness of Tyler's blood. "Sports, huh?" she asked, doing her best to try and make conversation, to try and emit the same confidence and charm that Andrei and Leo seemed to have. It wasn't 100% the same, but at least it was something. Katarina appraised him for a moment, a small smile playing on the edges of her lips. "I guess you do seem like the athletic type. A soccer player... or a swimmer perhaps?"

With one last inhale, only the filter was left from her cigarette. Kat had an urge to light up another one, but instead stomped out the butt beneath her white sneaker. There was a slightly awkward silence between them, but the brunette wasn't quite sure how to ameliorate it. So she let it hang in the air for a bit, the tension thicker than molasses. As uncomfortable as it was, Katarina would much rather sit in that silence than answer Tyler's follow up questions. With any other person, she would have just avoided it, thrown in some sarcasm and snark and been on her merry way. But she didn't really feel as though she could do that with him. "Oh no, it's just that you're different from the others, you--" Kat began, stumbling over her words a bit before coming to a halt. Shaking her head, she ran a hand through her hair and said, "Even if I could give you some sort of explanation, I really doubt you'd believe me. So let's just let it as it's complicated, yeah?" In an attempt to change the subject, Kat looked away and asked, "How did you end up here anyway?"

It felt like electricity running across the surface of his skin when he touched her, attempting to help her into a sitting position. But that feeling disappeared as soon as he dropped his hands, obeying her wishes as she waves him away. "Sorry," Leonardo immediately said, running a hand through his hair sheepishly. He wasn't quite sure what he was sorry for. Maybe for helping her sit up and getting too close. Maybe for not keeping her from getting injured. Or maybe, because sometimes when he was around her, his usual calm, charming self became a bit more awkward. Whatever it was, he shrugged it off, furrowing a brow with Lexi let out an uneasy laugh. Leo wasn't quite sure what was funny, but decided not to say anything just yet. What she went through could have been seriously traumatic for her, and he didn't want antagonize her any more than she might already be.

The brunette vampire took a step back to give Lexi some space, placing his hands in his pockets in a semi-casual stance. The silence hung in the air for what seemed like an hour but was really only a few seconds. She opened her eyes again, and Leo bit the inside of his lip, wondering what could possibly be going on inside her head. "I can grab the nurse if-" he began, unsure of what to do. But she spoke up then and looked up at him, her hazel eyes meeting his chocolate brown, and Leo snapped back into it. "Yeah, of course. I think staying away from the beachy kind is probably best for the time being," he responded with a slight chuckle, grinning back. He could hear a hint of embarrassment in her tone, but didn't point it out. That didn't really seem like the most gentlemanly thing to do. Instead, Leonardo crossed the room to the water cooler that looked like something out of that like something out of a paper company's office and filled a medium cup with the cool liquid, garnishing it with a bendy straw.

"You gave us all quite a fright back there," the male vampire murmured upon his return, handing the cup over to Alexis. He grabbed a nearby chair and moved it to the side of her infirmary bed, taking a seat. His words were more true than she probably knew. There had been quite a bit of blood, enough to affect even vampires old than himself. Andrei froze up a bit and Katarina almost went on a rampage, two situations that would have been incredibly detrimental on their own, let alone at the same time.
