For thousands of years, humans have worshipped gods from the sky. Images of superhuman beings pepper history across time and around the globe, their origins unknown—only their reassuring presence and fanciful stories of arrival have been noted. The truth is that yes, they are always here and they do come from the sky, but never in a way humans of times passed would expect.

Nine beings come from beyond the sky, further than the naked eye can see. Celestial forms spun into existence by gravity pulse with life. It is here we find the source of our Roman gods. Every hundred years or so orbital patterns align the planets of our solar system, giving these beings an opportunity to combine their energy and leave their spherical forms. A visit to Earth’s surface is necessary to ensure that sustaining life in this corner of the Milky Way is feasible.

As we approach the year 2025, this project no longer seems promising. The planets are itching to get to Earth’s surface and try to set things right for the sake of their hard work and their own safety. They must push the humans in the right direction before they destroy not only their host planet, but the rest of the Solar System.

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————

With a flash, nine celestial beings in our solar system were ripped from their celestial bodies. The planets as we know them became dormant, their souls light years across the Milky Way galaxy. Their disappearance would go unnoticed, life on Earth’s surface resuming as normal. They find themselves in an unfamiliar terrain without a clue to where they might be.

Pluto

Not by choice, Pluto was suddenly human. This puzzled him, the not by choice part. He didn't quite like it, to say the least. The other not-his-choice was his surroundings. He definitely wasn't on Earth. She didn't have plants that looked like this, and she certainly didn't have four moons. So, where was he? Pluto subconsciously brushed himself off, although he hadn't fallen or gotten dirty, and looked around some more before cautiously walking forward. It wasn’t quite time for him to be out of his celestial body. He and his colleagues weren’t supposed to jump out for another few weeks at least. So what was he doing here. And where was here? And why couldn't he get back to his true form? It wasn't that he didn't try. He was more than ready to nope out of this situation and head home. Sure, Earth's inhabitants weren't too keen on his planetary status but that didn't mean he didn't like his place in the universe. If the humans didn't like him, fine. No one gets a cool volcanic eruption until they do. And it's not a heart on his surface, it's a battle scar and there is nothing cute about it. Either way, his key back to his place in his solar system was not where he left it in any of his pockets. He began pacing and contemplating his options, but this was short-lived as his thoughts were interrupted by a loud—

Mercury

"AHHHHHHHH!"

Mercury landed with a massive thud directly in front of Pluto, who had stopped abruptly in his tracks. Somehow he had managed to fall from the sky and through the branches of a few trees, gathering twigs and strange leaves along the way. He had landed in a crumpled mess, but was quick to right himself and hurry to his feet. "Pluto!!" he exclaimed, pulling plant pieces out of his hair and off of his clothing. "What's up, my dude!! Did you bring me here? Is there a party?? Heck yeah, dude, that's tight!" He stretched out his fist for a fist-bump but was only met by Pluto's stare of irritation and otherwise emotionless face. Thrilled that he was tapping a nerve, Mercury grinned and kept going. "This really is a great place, Pluto, pal. Where did you find this? What is this place? Do tell me if there will be any single Pringles here. You know me, it doesn't matter who. As long as they’re cute. I'm ready for some action!!" To his pleasure, Pluto had turned and began walking in another direction. His jaw was set, so Mercury knew he had managed to not only really get on his nerves but he had also made him very uncomfortable. He knew Pluto didn't like discussing parties of any sort, let alone hooking up. Mercury doubled over with laughter, clutching his stomach. Never did it occur to him that he couldn't get back to his home.

saturn
In a small and empty clearing, Saturn landed. He adjusted his glasses on the bridge of his nose and craned his neck up at the cosmos. The stars twinkled in response, but the constellations were not the ones he learned to memorize, they were wrong, they weren't Earth's. His lips went taut and he flexed his fingers. He stared at strange satellites, but thought on Mons Saturninus plunged into bedlam; the eighty-two moons held in his orbit, and their king stolen mid-conversation from his throne.

Saturn followed a scream, waded through tall grass and parted brush, felt beads of water from leaves turn his hands slick and cold, heard the gentle tapping of his jacket's cord lock swinging into a zipper as he moved. The voice dissolved into one-sided chatter and he squinted. Mercury was easy to remember, he was like a jingle seared into the brain—begrudgingly, you remembered, and when he lifted the final bit of flora obstructing his path, there he was, cackling, hyena-like. Saturn looked away. Instead, his eyes tracked Pluto—probably Pluto, it had been ages—separating himself from Mercury. Emergency, he speculated, or conspiracy, but then where were the others?

He stepped forward, let the branch drop back into place behind him. "Pluto," he asked, it was unlikely he'd get anywhere with Mercury. "Who brought me here?"

    damnnn~. this sh*t is niceeeee~.

A short, black-clothed figure stands near the edge of a cliff. Mars strokes her chin as she stares at the sky. A pair of black, round frame shades perches her nose bridge and a single thought crosses her mind as her gaze settles on not one, but the four moons above her,
"Did Earth do some renovating while I wasn't looking?"

Mars felt a momentary pang in her chest. She would have thought that after being neighbors and all for how many years, Earth would've been a bit considerate and ask Mars for some opinion during the redecorating process because well... Mars crouched down until she was at eye-level with a strange-looking plant. Some of Earth's decisions needed some serious rethinking...

Unimpressed, Mars stood back up and attempted to wipe the dirt from her leather sleeves (her landing wasn't the smoothest, nor the luckiest as there just had to be a muddy patch.) Now, Mars knew. She knew that the departure for Earth wasn't for some time, so she had an inkling that something must have gone wrong with the itinerary. That is, unless, Earth personally invited her early for some reason... Mars paused to consider the thought but ended up scrapping it.

A scream, followed by a thud, caught Mars' attention away from her thoughts. Knelt on the edge of the cliff, Mars looked down and peered at the three small specks standing in a field of tall grass. Mars adjusted her shades as if they could magnify her vision. A grin gradually grew on her face once she made out who the three specks were.
"MERCURY! SATURN! PLUTO!"
Mars shouted with glee. Mars looked to be dangerously leaning off the edge at that point- unable to contain her excitement. She didn't even notice her foundation was crumbling beneath her rash movements.

Unbothered, Mars waved her arms frantically to get their attention
"Hold on! I'll be right there,"
she called out and proceeded to back away. Why was she going back? If "to find a pathway down to the field" came to mind, Mars would've laughed her head off.

Without warning, Mars' body launched off the edge and dove straight for the three gods below.
"HERE! I! COME!"

Pluto

The sound of another pair of footsteps brought Pluto to a halt. Mercury’s voice had not yet faded from his perception, but the sight of Saturn brought an inward sigh of relief. Finally, someone with some common sense, he thought to himself. He waited while Saturn drew close enough and listened intently to what he said, trying to gather more evidence that could help him figure out what was going on.

“I’m trying to figure that out,” he replied calmly. “It’s not time to make another human visit yet, not for about another quarter of Mercury’s orbit.” Pluto’s focus began to shift back inward, where he was trying to solve this puzzle, when he was interrupted yet again by a shout in the distance. He turned toward the sound and shielded his eyes, blocking the light from this planet’s central star, and squinted. In the distance, it looked like Mars. It was beginning to seem like everyone on the human project would be arriving in time. Oh, why couldn’t Eris or Ceres be the representative dwarf planet on the project? Sure, he was the biggest and was labeled as a planet by the humans but at least Haumea could have looked different enough to catch their attention. Who knew if she was all there, though, with her collision damage and questionable stability...

Either way, it appeared that Mars was now throwing herself off a cliff so he might as well meet her where she landed. “Let’s see what this planet’s gravity is like,” he said to Saturn as he began walking again. “That might give us a clue as to where we are. Or not.”

Mercury

Mercury’s cloud of laughter was penetrated by another voice in the distance. He stood up abruptly and looked toward the sound, seeing none other than Mars up on a cliff. What fun! His joy over irritating Pluto disappeared and was replaced by an air of excitement. “Mars! Mars!” he shouted, running in her direction. “Mars! Mars! Mars!” It didn’t seem like he would be stopping until she reached the bottom of the cliff. Mercury began jumping up and down. He found that it took him just a little longer to hit the ground again after each jump. This was definitely even more fun and exciting than cliff diving. Mercury started doing a combination of cartwheels and flips, never stopping his chant. “Mars! Maaaaaars!”

A twinkle in the sky became like a meteor and violently crashed right in the middle of the formerly peaceful lake. The water was still for a moment; then suddenly, significant ripples came about as a beautiful woman came up splashing and gasping for air. The woman thrashed about in the water for a few seconds before realizing her surroundings. She swam languidly towards the edge of the lake and hoisted herself out. Taking a moment to catch her breath, she took note of her well-manicured nails, hands clutching the dirt below her.

"I could have drowned, you asshole!" Venus shrieked up at the sky. Her anger ebbed as wide eyes landed on the four moons propped up innocently in the luminous atmosphere. (Where am I...? ) Venus pondered as the remaining anger quickly dissolved into confusion. It definitely wasn't Earth; that planet wasn't as... unsightly. As her critical gaze swept over the landscape, she hastily squeezed the water out of her soaked dress.

Venus whipped her head around at the sound of familiar voices, interrupting her seething thoughts. She shoved through some nearby bushes just in time to scoff at Mars leaping off a cliff (Show off.) and Mercury running towards her, cheering her on like a madman. Eyes rolling at both of them, Venus sauntered up to Pluto and Saturn with her hand on her hip. As she arrived just in time to hear Pluto's suggestion; she raised one eyebrow and asked:

"You two know nothing about this hideous planet?"

Uranus and Neptune

.
Neptune opened his eyes. He was sitting on a tree stump with a forest surrounding him. He knew they were supposed to visit Terra, but so soon? 'No,' he thought, 'this can't be her'. The forest looked odd.
He stood up, wiping the dirt off of his coat. It was quiet. He looked around, noting every discrepancy he found. After a bit, he decided to pick a direction and just walk as far as he could. Less than a minute went by when he heard a thud nearby. He turned his head to face the direction of the thud and saw Uranus stepping out of the bushes picking leaves and twigs from his hair. They looked at each other and as if telepathically, greeted one another silently.

An echoing scream broke the silence.

The two decided to investigate and started walking in the direction of the scream, which was followed by other miscellaneous sounds and another scream. After a bit of walking, they stopped at a hill overlooking another forest. Several entities were seen between the cracks of the dense canopy. They ran down the hill to investigate further.
"Oh, great..." Uranus signed as they saw the other gods.

    Let's look around!

Air deliciously whipped through Mars' hair and through her shades, she watched Mercury from above- coming closer and closer as she fell. If her grin could stretch any wider, it most definitely would as Mercury's excitement ignited her own. It made Mars grow giddy with anticipation.
"Mercuryyyy,"
she responded repeatedly with mirth.

The deity of war torqued her body so that her feet pointed toward the ground. As she braced for impact with the escarpment, dirt billowed into the air like murky clouds and the tall grass surrounding her fluttered wildly. Mars remained unharmed; frankly, her descent felt too smooth compared to her past drops on Terra. She shook the rubble from her hair and removed her shades to wipe them with her shirt. A stark outline of mud and dust appeared around her crimson eyes. Mars spat a wad of saliva onto the ground- some remnants of the unfamiliar terrain made their way into her mouth.

Mars laughed with the bouncing god and followed after him with backflips and somersaults of her own. Even when she was falling, she could still feel the weird sensation of falling slower than usual. No matter as she enjoyed it even more.
"My! This is great! Mercury, my friend! Let's go on an adventure!"
There was an intense glint in the god's eyes- a relentless need to seek the unknown.

Her ears perked at the voice of Venus to the point where she had to give her attention to the others. The same look in her eyes remained.
"Earth or not- we should explore. Who knows what's out there."

Pluto

It seemed that just about everyone on the human project was here. Pluto caught sight of Venus making her way over, while two more appeared to be arriving as well. Uranus and Neptune? Pluto couldn’t think of any other pair that would be likely to arrive together. Unless they had a choice? No, of course not. Never in a million light years would Pluto have chosen to be abandoned in the middle of nowhere with the galaxy’s most annoying chunk of rock.

Pluto eyed Venus up and down as she stopped at his side, taking in her completely disheveled appearance. He crossed his arms in thought and turned his attention back to Mercury and Mars, who apparently had no concern for the current state of things. “Why would we?” Pluto responded, inwardly leveling himself. “If we did, I think we would already be doing something about it.”

At this point, Mercury and Mars appeared to be preparing to make things worse. Pluto let his arms drop and started walking over, determined to put this flame out before it became a wildfire.

Mercury

Mercury’s grin grew wider as Mars joined him in his joy. He paused at her marvelous suggestion. “An adventure! Yeah!!” Mercury returned to his jumping and flipping, taking great pleasure in the small lack of gravitational pull. “Let’s go right now—“ He turned to Mars, about to suggest that they race to the top of the cliff Mars had soared from, but was interrupted by a voice filled with displeasure.

“No,” Pluto said, placing himself in close proximity to Mercury in order to redirect his attention. “No one is going on an adventure. We need to figure out what is going on. It looks like everyone will be here soon. Let’s wait so we can find out how to get back.”

“Aww, no fun, dude,”
Mercury pouted, landing gently on his rear end. He crossed his arms and sat silently, inwardly throwing his own little tantrum. Pluto was right, but he really wanted to go explore!

It was fitting that Jupiter’s arrival was to be dropped ten, twenty feet or so from the ground. A shocked, slightly scared prolonged hum came from his throat instead of a scream, allowing for his instincts to kick in. Except it wasn’t that harsh of a fall. It wasn’t really a fall at all, seeing as how it was not too much of a quick descent down, and the initial panic he had slowly faded. But as the god reached the ground, he was caught off guard by the contact with his feet, the realization that he was now in his mortal form, stumbling a bit. He could greet the ground face to face another day.

“Ah, this is...not where I’m supposed to be?” Jupiter’s brows furrowed, clicking his tongue as he looked around. Before he could even get his thoughts together, his eyes met a gathering of forms not too far away. Squinting, he tried his best to get a better look and familiarity struck him. It’d been a while since he’d seen the rest of his colleagues in their mortal forms, but as soon as he saw them, he remembered who they were.

With a sigh of relief, Jupiter jogged his way over, raising a hand to wave at them.

“This is a bit odd, isn’t it? How long has everyone— oh, is everything alright?" He asked, spotting the sour look on Mercury's face." Jupiter rubbed at his temples, still concerned with whatever had brought them all here. Taking a deep breath, he decided to think of something that was easier. More concrete. The celestial took a headcount of everyone mentally, their names listed off under his breath. Good, good.

Just about everyone that was supposed to be here for the next meeting was here. Earth was missing, but like how he was late to the party, it was probably fine. Perhaps it was simply an early start on their task?

Uranus and Neptune
As their pace slowed down to a walk, they noticed more and more of their acquaintances appearing from the woods. Both of them knew about the upcoming meeting, and both of them knew this wasn't it. Uranus looked up at Neptune with a face that clearly said: "was it you?".

"Did you do this?" he asked.

Neptune quickly looked at Uranus and shook his head, surprised by the question. They met up with the rest of the deities without further conversations and stood aside, watching the happening between Mercury and Pluto.

    what a killjoy

Mars, rooted in her spot, stared hard up at Pluto. Her brows scrunched and the intensity in her eyes dwindled until she became disappointed. If her memory could recall, Pluto was quite a serious individual. His exterior was too tough for Mars to crack. Knowing there was little she could do to convince him, Mars sighed and stubbornly kicked the dirt before walking away. She muttered under her breath,
"No fun... Stupid tall person... What a killjoy. Don't call me unless someone is dying..."

The moody deity, who was once bouncing for joy, was now pacing broodingly around the place.
"He said to wait, so there's nothing wrong with what I'm doing,"
Mars thought as she crouched down to examine a peculiarly shaped plant; it had funny shaped petals and a silky texture. Mars was now a few feet away from the group- not entirely knowing where she was going- but anything that caught her eye reeled in her full attention.

"They'll be fine,"
she thought.
"As long as they can see me..."

Pluto

Pluto turned to Jupiter, resigning to the fact that he’ll probably have to spend the next hour at least having the same conversation over and over again until everyone arrived. He opened his mouth to respond, but instantly closed it again as a thick cloud of dark fog began to form a few feet away. As the fog slowly formed into a humanoid figure, Pluto recognized it as a messaging system used by the less populated solar systems further from the Galactic Center. Near the end it the Scutum-Crux? Pluto folded his arms across his chest and focused on the figure, preparing himself for whatever bullshit must be behind this whole mishap they were in. When the figure spoke, Pluto felt the voice come from within his mind.

“This human trial has gone on long enough,” it said. “Why the Central Galactic Government decided to allow such a project so close to the Center is an enigma. Your humans are too soft, too stupid. They’re too reactive. It’s pathetic. Your solar system’s environment is too unstable to support the growth of real life. You’re going to ruin it for the rest of us who plan to grow life forms.” The figure shimmered and when it spoke again, it had a different voice.

“We’ve contacted the CGG Life Branch with our concerns. You have exactly one more ‘Earth’ rotation before your place in this trial is handed over to us.” The voice changed again as the figure flickered.

“Boss says we can’t get rid of you or else we’ll get into trouble with the government guys. But that doesn’t mean we can’t make it damn near impossible!” The dark figure held out its hand, presenting a holographic image of each of the planets’ keys back to their planetary forms. “I’m terribly sorry, but are these yours? I think I’ve misplaced them!” The figure threw the marble-like planet keys into the air and the holographic image dissipated. And with a “Suck it!”, the figure was gone.

Mercury

Mercury’s pouting was disrupted by a tingling at the back of his mind. A message! He felt it approaching before it appeared before the crowd of stranded planets. Mercury spun around on his rump until he was facing the figure and listened intently as it spoke. His demeanor fell from playful, to serious, and finally to determination. Everything is fun and games until someone messes up his fun and games...and Mercury is just here for the fun and games. The humans are great to pick on! And kind of cute, Mercury admitted. He didn’t feel it was fair to just obliterate them all for the sake of switching project coordinators. Mercury was just about to settle into Serious Mode™ when the message ended and the tingling in his brain stopped.

“Suck it!” he repeated, rolling backward on the ground with a giggle. “He said ‘suck it!’” He was finding too much glee in this to notice Pluto roll his eyes.
