Chapter One
Do You Believe in Fate?

The wind whipped, blew ragged breaths through the staunch towers and steeples of Aloway. Leaves long discarded from trees in preparation for the winter months soared up into the air as if they were reaching for the sky only to fall once again back into the muck. A guardsman’s iron clad foot crushes the dying appendages into the mud, a small girl weaves through the midday crowd with a coin purse clutched to her chest. The guard startles, yet more leaves whip around him as the mud-faced girl streaks past him, an older gentleman in noble garb far past it’s time stumbling after her. A disease scared face blinks under the guard’s helmet. It takes a few precious seconds for the guard to respond to what was happening and the noble’s whines of thievery follow him as he takes off after the small thief.

Somewhere else entirely, a man, nay a demon, clad in scarlet robes that fall in waves to the floor walks impatiently between the pews of a desolate and broken temple. His breaths come out in cloudy plumes of black smoke, as if he could breathe fire at any moment. Behind him at the entrance stands a far from human looking creature, hunched and terrible in its countenance. The crimson demon stops abruptly, turning his ire filled gaze on the hunched creature, his voice is a like nails and the ground below them tremors with an quake as he speaks.

I DO NOT HAVE THE PATIENCE FOR YOUR MISTAKES, TWISTED DEVIL!” The creature shudders and folds further into itself, it does not dare speak. The temples marbled floors groan and crack under the pressure of the towering demon’s voice, the temple walls shake and stone falls from the ceiling, red tinted daylight creeping inside. Crimson robes swish and float across the floor as the demon makes his way toward the cowering thing. He kneels in front of it, a twisted hand with fingers like talons reaches out from under its cloak and runs delicately along the creatures face.

“Can you not understand why this is so important?” His voice is much softer, almost melodic as he speaks and the creature begins to visibly relax under his touch, “We cannot afford to make any mistakes, my child, the world that we wish to see requires absolute perfection.” Another scared and twisted hand finds it’s way to the creatures face and he lifts it, human eyes, green like the trees, gaze back at him from behind the festering boils covering it’s skin. The creature does the best it can to nod and a flash comes from the dark space under a the others crimson hood, like a fanged smile. The demon, the king, the god, Eisheth lowers his hood and the creature, the thing that perhaps once was human, disintegrates to the floor in a puddle of bubbling blood colored liquid.

“You are not perfect.” The puddle does not respond.

Far from the this, back in Aloway, the thief has escaped and is huddled closely with a few other children in the remains of an old market stall, hemlock grows from the cracks in the stone at their feet. An animal cries somewhere in the distance as the children tear into the leg of a turkey, most likely purchased with their stolen coin. The pock-faced guard still stalks the streets, his heavy steps disrupting stagnant puddles that had formed on the cobbled roads. Eventually, he will catch his thief and she will spit in his face and cry out as she is dragged through those same puddles and he will laugh like the crows. But that, is a story for another time.

At that same moment, six individuals are making their ways through Aloway’s muddied streets. Six people whose fates are already strung and woven out before them, tangled together in a way that would be impossible to unweave. The gods’ weavers cannot be said to have no sense of irony. The Mage; powerful and good, The Templar; steadfast and courageous, The Devil; tormented and young, The Pretender; quick and lost, The Knight; loyal and strong, and The Bard; shining and strange, a pattern woven together not for beauty but for necessity like a warm blanket is needed in the winter. All intrinsically tied, all fated to be heroes. That is, if you believe in fate at all. The ballad ahead could all have been coincidence or mistake, after all. So tell me, dear reader.

Do you believe in fate?
