Realistic or Modern Special Ed - Characters

Excited to get to know everyone!

What you’ll need:

  • Ability Kickback (negative side effect on your character for using their powers. Can be physical, mental, emotional, etc. These can fade as they improve their skills. Or also become more complex as they take their skills to new lengths)
  • Family Situation/Background (anything you want us to know upfront)
  • And of course anything other info you want to add.

For anyone who wants to use the blank character sheet, there are tabs for each grade as an option for if you want to update your picture and other info as your character ages.

We may need to add in more categories to each year as the story progresses, but here’s the basic format:

    Appearance:
    A shock of light blonde hair. Big, gray eyes circled by a wide pair of round-rimmed glasses. A little small for his age and prefers to wear hand-me-downs from his older brother, which makes him look even smaller.

    Personality:
    Often comes off as quiet and private, but don’t mistake him for being an introvert. He loves people and is very energized by them. And if he’s quiet, he’s usually just taking stock of his surroundings and the interactions of those around him before jumping in himself.

    And then his playful, fast-talking, chatty side comes out in full force. He loves making people laugh, sharing his ideas, and experiencing new things with his buddies in tow.

    Inquisitive, observant, and analytical, Egan is a smart kid. But he has a hard time steering his focus. His mind is constantly exploring new ideas and seeking to test the old ones which, as kindergartener, gives him some ADHD-like tendencies.

    When it comes to adults or authority, he rarely if ever acts out unless he can see that benefits outweigh the risks. Even so, he might deconstruct the reasoning behind the orders in his head even while obeying them (the the extent that a kindergartener is capable).

    Special Ability:
    Technology Manipulation

    Ability Kickback:
    At this stage, nothing extreme. He sometimes “shorts-out” and he forgets where he is at. And he can get pretty bad headaches. To him, the biggest challenge is not eating too much sugar as it interferes with the connection and can make things go too haywire.

    Family Background:
    Egan and his older brother Liam are step-brothers. When Egan learned his mom was getting married and he was going to get a new big brother, he was immensely excited. Liam, 14, is very good to him. The jacket that he let Egan borrow has become something of a comfort blanket. Especially since their recently married parents are already starting to fight. Their loud arguments upset Egan and the jacket makes him feel like his brother is comforting him, as he often does when things get really bad.

    Liam’s father is a stiff but kind man with a good heart, even if stress from work sometimes overrides it. Egan’s mother is a lot of fun unless she’s dealing with her chronic mood swings. Then she can be touchy and unpredictable.

    Other Stuff
    He has a pet Gerbil named Captain Crunch and his favorite dessert is a handful of gummy bears. And the headphones he wears everywhere don't actually work. They're just an old pair Liam lets him play with.

    Appearance:
    Long black hair, often falling into her face. Narrow brown eyes, always giving off the impression of discerning even at a young age. Typically dressed in clothes that look simple but are actually expensive beyond belief, far more than she realizes or can comprehend at that age.

    Personality:
    Impulsive and outgoing, she's often the first to jump into a conversation, and the life of the party. Whether yapping about her new goldfish or asking questions during another kid's show and tell, she rarely keeps quiet. It's just so boring to pretend to be all shy and quiet when she could be learning and talking to her friends. She's extremely thoughtless, often lacking a head to mouth filter, even for a Kindergartener, being unsure of what's okay to tell about her life and what isn't. Though not quite as bad, she also displays impulsive tendencies regarding decision making, rationalizing that if it's fun and everyone wants to do it, it's probably okay. That doesn't mean she's totally idiotic. She has a surprisingly high emotional intelligence for her age, even if her reading and fine motor sklls are a little behind. She to a degree understands how to talk to people, and cheer them up or when to just listen to her friends. She's as much of a mom friend as a 5 year old can be. She generally listens to adults without much questioning on her, though she's extremely susceptible to peer pressure, generally just following the last person to speak. There's no room for reasoning in this household, that's for sure and certain.

    Special Ability:
    Air Manipulation

    Ability Kickback:
    When summoning air, she can only use as much as she has within her. Given she's 5 and has poor breath control, she turns lightheaded and nauseous after overexertion. Sore throats are also common after, though don't happen all the time. Once she even lost the ability to speak after a particularly exhausting display.

    Family Background:
    Born the youngest child to an old money family, she's had it relatively good up to this point. Her older siblings mainly were too busy leaving her to her own devices, but gave her attention when they had the time. Her parents were the ones who were a struggle to garner attention from, being too busy with their own prompting her to be more and more gregarious, attempting to force attention on her. In general, her home life's sort of lonely, causing her to grasp onto attention more and more desperately. Though not unloved, the neglect certainly starts to get to her. Recently, her parents have been talking to her more and more however, asking how she's feeling, and if anything unusual's been happening to her. For now, she's enjoying it but it's growing more and more obvious that they know something she doesn't.

    Other Stuff
    Stress braids her hair. Has a massive sweet tooth, being addicted to Rice Krispie treats. Loves animals, but is unfortunately allergic to dog and cat fur.

    Appearance:
    Short silvery white hair that extends a bit onto his face. Blood red eyes that tend to fixate on people.Prefers to wear hoodies and clothes that feel comfortable preferring grey and black.

    Personality:
    Earl is a curious learner and observer. He’s always eager to ask questions when he doesn’t understand something, which sometimes gets difficult to deal with. Other than that he’s carefree and enjoys coming to kindergarten along with anything else he finds fun.He likes trying to research about his powers or to research things he likes in general.

    Behavior towards others: He’s friendly to the other kids as long as they’re friendly with him, though he doesn’t hold grudges and tends to forgive quickly as his parents taught him. Also he tends to fit in with most groups.

    Special Ability:
    Density control

    Ability Kickback:
    He can only manipulate the density of something inorganic that he’s touching to make it more or less dense, with it being easier to make something less dense. Also a conscious effort is required or else the object will revert back to its normal state. Long use of his ability makes him sleepy since it tires him out.

    Amount of effort depends on the size of the object with larger objects requiring more effort.


    Family Background:
    He lives in a nuclear family with both his parents working. He has a little sister who his parents drop off at daycare before dropping him off to kindergarten. His family is pretty well off since they work a lot. His father works as a physics professor while his mother works as a financial manager. Even with two jobs his parents manage to make time for him and his sister.

    Other Stuff
    He’s a heavy sleeper and hence ends up having to be woken up a few times when he heads to school.

    Is scared of butterflies ever since one sat on his nose as a child.

    Enjoys shows with knights or characters that wield swords, he thinks they’re cool and seeks to emulate them.

    Black hair, light blue eyes, rather pale, also never smiles.

    Personality:
    Stormi's pretty cold-hearted: Distant, loner, self-reliant, stubborn and doesn’t apologize.

    Special Ability:
    Cryokinesis

    Ability Kickback:
    Her being as cold as ice

    Family Background:
    Her parents are divorced. Stormi also has a twin sister, though she hasn't seen her in 1 year, because her twin sister was taken by her dad, when he left her and her mother. Her mother also often leaves her alone, since she works two jobs as a waitress in two restaurants to be able to get food on the table and a roof over her head for her and Stormi.

    Other Stuff
    Her skin feels ice cold and the temperature drops 2 to 3 degrees around her.

    She recently started playing violin.

Olivier "Ollie" Thorpe​

    Appearance:
    Ollie has dark-brown, almost black hair and light-walnut eyes framed by long, thick lashes. His dark skin is brushed with faint freckles and the occasional flesh-wound from a bit of mischief gone wrong.

    He's around average height for his age though as his height is mostly focused in his legs appears taller from a distant vantage point. Is known for a rather jarring combination of clothing regardless of the weather that is really only seen as normal back home in Florida-- basketball shorts and a hoodie.

    Personality:
    Ollie is outwardly a friendly, assertive child who doesn't seem to have much trouble being sociable and forging connections in new environments. He has a particularly well-developed sense of empathy for one his age (though not too an insane extent, he is still five) though a good deal of stubbornness right beside that so getting him to, for example, apologize can sometimes be a trial in itself.

    His ease in navigating the social realm is perhaps helped by the fact that Ollie is a deeply imaginative child, and has never been shy about sharing his sometimes wild ideas with others. He's pretty passionate about those things he's he's interested in, if intense at times.

    Ollie is very adventurous additionally and-- on occasion --can be a bit of a trouble-maker, though in the tamest sense of the word for now. Unafraid of much of the risk associated with his brand of mischief, Ollie is not easily dissuaded by pain and is more often than not bearing a new 'battle-scar', or bandaid from a recent scheme he'll unabashedly show off.

    Special Ability:
    Magnetism Manipulation

    Ability Kickback:
    - Has to concentrate intensely on whatever object he's attempting to repel or attract. Doing this for extended periods of time or attempting it on objects larger then himself usually makes him go a little bit cross-eyed, and gives him a terrible migraine to show for his effort.
    - His abilities act best on metal objects. Using them on non-metal objects usually requires a good amount more effort and has mixed-bag results right now.

    Family Background:
    Ollie's family of four-- his grandmother, mother, father, and him --have been in the city of Newport Heights for only a month now since their move from a comparably warmer city in Florida. His parents are both doctors-- his mother a neurological surgeon and his father a dentist. Despite their usually busy work schedules, Ollie has always been very close with both of his parents. But he's closer still with his grandmother, who has lived with the family for as long as he can remember.

    It was a better opportunity for his mother in a nearby larger city (an hour max out from Newport) that prompted the family's move, though it has also left his father jobless as he was previously working out of his family's practice back in Florida. Unwilling to work out of another person's office and yet reluctant about opening his own without the support of his family back in Florida, for the last couple of months since they've been in Newport his father has been stuck in what he calls "a state of indecisiveness".

    This period of indecisiveness, his wife has wryly pointed out on more then one occasion, has allowed him the free-time to do everything but get a job though.

    Other Stuff
    - "Olivier" is his grandfather on his mother's side's name. So to avoid confusion, his mother's side of the family typically refers to Olivier the ii by "ollie". And the nickname has stuck.
    - Ollie loses his jackets rather frequently, so his grandmother has taken to getting little patches of fabric with the words "Property of Olivier Thorpe" sewn onto them.
    - Ollie was adopted, but is unaware of the fact for now.

Appearance: Thorne has pale skin and shaggy curled black and white patchwork of hair. His eyes are a light emerald, and he has light freckles on his face


Personality:
Personality: Thorne is a very outgoing and sunny child who loves people and just generally wants to be friends with everyone. unfortunately, due to undiagnosed mental disorders Thorne struggles to make friends and keep current ones. he can be awkward and impulsive when it comes to his actions. Thorne can be very imaginative due to his lonely background and lack of friends Thorne makes up names for inanimate objects and gives them personalities so they can be his friends (Henry his plush frog). Thorne also lacks an ability to sense danger, he is often seen walking up to complete strangers or running into oncoming traffic. due to this lack of awareness Thorne is often the victim to bullying and abuse because he is overly trusting of anyone willing to give him attention or companionship. Thorne is also not one to blame others. if anything, bad happens he will take the blame onto himself even if it's obvious he did nothing wrong.


Special Ability:
Ability: Nullify. Can nullify other abilities while in physical contact with said person.

Ability Kickback:
Kickback: depending on the power level of the power he is nullifying it can leave him numb to the world around him physically but only to the degree of an abilities power.

Family Background:
Background: Thorne was born in the slums in a dank alley to his mother, a drug addict who works sketchy jobs in order to pay for her supply. Thorne's father is not in the picture as his mother puts it “he is a deadbeat who couldn't care less about anyone but himself, and probably is dead in a ditch somewhere. Thorne knows nothing else of his father and lives with his mother who is very neglectful of her son. Thorne barely has his needs met and sleeps on a bare mattress in the living room, he is very small and stunted for his age and is underweight. Though his mother cares about him, she often blames Thorne for all her misfortune and wishes he was never born so when she was offered money in turn for sending her son to a very secretive school she couldn't refuse.
