Maria Mayer - Dall Island

Finishing the final touches on her creations and arming them, Maria was sitting down on one of the discarded crates as she hummed to herself on the solid ground, while it seemed Chanterelle had run into a bit of trouble herself, Maria would be of little help in involving herself with that and so she did not. For now her priority was getting her dearies ready for sortie. It was unlikely the Denizens of this island would just let them rest her in peace. While that would be nice, the doll maker knew this island was now the workshop of other creatures and beings and was their dominion.

And just like that the world tilted beneath her, casting Maria to the ground as some terrible noise filled the air, turning her head to the source as she picked herself, Maria was more than slightly annoyed by the giant crab creatures and the screeching they produced. The real question was how to block it out and to get close enough to use her creations to do battle. Melee range against giant crabs was not the wisest of actions, but the only open to her and she had operated against dangerous things akin to this before. With a huff she forms lines to her medium doll and commands it to follow as she then forms lines to the other four small ones, using magic to force the others into a "flying" formation, Maria darts off as suddenly and more jarring all sound ceases within the area.

"..." Even her own words could not reach her but within the confines of her mind. What? Orders would soon follow, ones that Maria felt were a very bad idea. Nearly all the mages here had widely differing attack profiles, from AOE, to melee, to mid ranged caster. If they all knew fire balls and could focus fire, it might be a good idea, but in practice she was worried they would just get in one another's way. There was still the issue of the other two "small" ones and the big boss, did Rand seriously intend to take them all on himself? Annoying... Let's see how many follow the plan, or how long till I get caught up in another's attack... My dress is partially armored so I should be fine.

With a distance that could only be marked in feet Maria closed in at range and quickly moves her hands, causing the four dolls to lash out, one with a maul, two with lances and shields and the fourth with dual hand axes as they aimed for the "soft" underbelly of the beast as the lancers go for the segmentations towards the arms, the maul armed doll goes for the right most eye as the axe man attacked the forward most right leg.

Azariah Vasher.jpgAzariah "Zari" Vasher

Though he hadn't thought he would, he was already beginning to miss Zosar, Adra, and Midori. At least things weren't so God damn tense when they were here. Ashi and Adrian didn't seem to be getting along very well at all, and if he couldn't calm down or she wouldn't stop challenging him it was far more likely they'd end up on each other's throats rather than they complete the mission. There was a distant hoarse squawking of a Steller's Jay accompanying the grim atmosphere. He'd stopped speaking as soon as Jarvis cut in, more comfortable in his tired partner's shadow than speculating tactics himself, and observed as his idea quickly slipped into the sand. Frankly, it was for the better. With the rhetoric people were using, it didn't sound like they were up for close cooperation in the first place, and Zari wasn't particularly interested in having them get in his way either.

Zari's eyes were trained on Adrian with only a brief interruption to glance, impressed, at Elly for pinpointing their enemies over such a distance. He was worried for who he'd come to consider a friend over the past few weeks. Not that he was in danger, no. Adrian's training regiment and skill was nothing he frowned at, and his uses of partial transformation were nothing short of genius. Zari was far more worried he'd get too zealous. It was, after all, a look and feeling he very much recognized in himself. Unreasoning fury, reckless lashing out. He nearly injured Noah because of it during the ballgame in lot C.

"Don't do anything you can't take back." His voice teetered on the edge of solemn as he said all he could think of in warning. They were all leaving by now, but he hoped his words would reach him, no matter how diffuse or subtle the meaning was.

He still had a bad gut feeling about this, but pushed it to the back of his mind as he looked back to Jarvis and held his arm out towards him. The downtime between the arena and now had been fruitful for them, as Zari got into the habit of waking him and more or less pulling him from his coffin to come train. There was no anxiety or second-guessing as he grabbed his partner anymore. He knew his wavelength would not burn him, he knew Jarvis was tough enough to take it even if he did slip up, and a part of him did by now believe that Jarvis trusted him too. The situation was suboptimal, but it was hardly a challenge for them. Not now.

Azariah's subconscious wish for Jarvis' transformation was laid bare as they touched, and as he began jogging down the eastern path at a brisk pace he whispered across their connection. "I wanna finish this up quickly and check in on Adrian. I don't like this."

Emmett James

Teacher 3.jpg

As soon as they'd all loaded themself into the open bed, Emmett stomped on the gas and sent the car spinning into motion. The suspension worked heavily as the thick tires bounced over sidewalks and cobblestone before they hit a main road and picked up speed. Debris was scattered across the street, more than half of the buildings were either smoking or actively on fire, but their mission was not to interfere in the firefighting so Emmett continued on by. The back window of the cabin was open and even with the roaring of the engine and the ambience of the burning city the team could hear each other quite clearly even without the ear pieces he still forced them to use. Unfortunately, it wasn't all that uplifting to listen to. Since they were the ones sentenced to be on teams with one another, he'd prefer to let them figure out their own issues - but when Thaddeus and Nadia began to trade insults during an active mission he was forced to act. He'd been very pleasant to them so far, but even he had lines. Internally, he sighed. He'd much rather have provided some comfort to Eva and encourage her openness, but this took precedence.

The truck drifted onto a side road as soon as Dani finished trying to calm the situation down, shaking everyone in their seats. One of the helicopters flew overhead and produced deafening noise before once again disappearing behind a building, and Emmett raised his voice to be heard. "This is what's going to happen. You're going to save your personal conflicts for when you're not in an active life or death situation. The next person who levels a comment at anyone else will be sitting the mission out and facing disciplinary action when we return." There was no hint of malice in his voice. No threatening undertones or ego involved, only black on white facts of the situation. Emmett wasn't a drill instructor, nor did he have any wish to be. "Death on a bike, if you put half that energy towards being productive..." He sighed to himself, but did not think on it further.

"Once again, our mission is scouting. The enemy territory is the underground catacombs. If that is beyond any of your estimated capabilities, feel free to cover the entrance." A bit of emotion shone through as his last sentence was spoken like a bored drive-through employee. A shower of sparks floated through the air above the truck as a support structure within an adjacent building cracked, and Emmett swerved hard to avoid a falling column that left a hefty dent in the ground behind them, but his face didn't show any concern. "The MT-M8 'Permafrost' handheld explosive is a circular magitech device with two settings:" He began, almost as if listing off the features from the back of the manual. "Twist it like an egg clock to arm it with delay, every click is adds a second and it counts down once you've let go of it. Press the button at the top until it clicks and it'll explode on impact once its left your hands. There's so many safety procedures about it it's almost impossible to fuck up. It quickly generates a cloud of freezing temperature, bound to drop the temperature of a room by twenty or thirty degrees and flash freeze anything in a two meter radius. It reportedly kills some off them, but it's primarily here so you don't burn to death or can make a quick escape."

Barely letting up to breathe, he continued, this time shooting a quick glance at Dani over his shoulder. "We don't know what the monsters are. Specialists have been on it, me included, and the skeletons have a discernible quote unquote existence on a spiritual level, but definitely don't have what could traditionally be called souls. Strange signatures have been picked up beneath the city, but we don't know their origin. It's not like any magic I've ever sensed, in fact -- wait, look alive."

Emmett paused and leaned forward over the steering wheel with his eyes on the sky as something scratched at the outer reaches of his amplified soul perception. A helicopter with a camera hanging out of its side like a machine gun flew past, with its spotlights focused in on an old three story building. Flames spilled out through windows and doorways, and just then he felt the presence. "You'll find out for yourself. Be ready." He commanded, and accelerated up towards the building. The smell of ashes on the wind were thick enough to give you a headache, but this was the kind of danger they agreed to as soon as they joined the DWMA.

A pillar of fire reached up towards the sky as the roof of the building caved in on itself, and before it had even settled two pitch black thin creatures appeared, leaping from somewhere inside to claw their way into the empty windows where the glass had long since shattered and disappeared. They moved erratically, as one might expect of a skeleton devoid of muscle, but the movements they did make were powerful and fast. They bony fingers effortlessly dug into concrete as they began exiting the building, and the flames around the blackened the walls they now clung to. As the helicopter rounded the building across the street the shone its light down at them, their eyeless skulls snapped in the direction of it. "Shit." Emmett murmured, as he pressed down on the breaks and turned the vehicle sideways in the street a building down from the monsters.

"Go go go!" He shouted, "Intercept them before they injure any civilians!" But even before he finished yelling out his orders, one of the creatures leapt from the building and cleared the good ten or so meters up to the helicopter, and grabbed onto its landing skids, shaking it in the air. The other attempted to do the same, but came a bit short of his goal and crashed into the building across the street before falling down and caving in the roof of a parked sedan. It stood up from the wreckage as if it had not affected it at all, then turned its attention down towards the lot of them instead.

Eva took a deep breath as she listened to what Sara was saying to her. Smiling, she gave Sara a nod, doing her best to shove down the crawling feeling of abyssal dread. Turning inwards she cleared her mind the best she could, pushing her back against the bed of the truck and tuning everything out for a moment. Opening her eyes again she looked to Gauss and Nadia after they spoke “Honest words, but it's difficult. Like a piece of me is forever distorted. It makes me feel empty to know I see this situation and dread it, fear it and want to run from it yet I never would have done this… before.” Eva spoke as she took a gas mask and toyed with it. Checking the seals she put it on once before taking it off once she was sure it was fitted correctly. She had begun to feel somewhat better but soon things began to unravel.

Tensing up she shook her head in a small sign of disappointment as she began to fumble around with her bag. Opening it up she rummaged around before she gripped a large piece of beef jerky. Unwrapping it she broke it into two, passing the other half to Sara then taking a huge bite out of her own like an animal. Finishing it in record time one could have said she inhaled it. Yet as she went for another one she looked up at the others, her eyes looking to each of them. Taking three of the beef jerky sticks out she looked back in her bag to see her snack reservoir deeply depleted already, spent all but for one peanut butter chew and she wasn’t giving that to anyone!

Unsure if the others would take the beef jerky she opened one at a time and handed it out to her different team members before inhaling another piece as if her life depended on it. Looking to Emmett as he described the grenades she toyed with the one in her hand, using it as a small distraction before all hell broke loose. Almost dropping the grenade she death gripped anything and anyone she could get ahold of as the truck slid to an abrupt stop. Watching the creature make the leap up to the helicopter she felt her skin crawl. They were freaky, strong and obviously had quite the ability about them. Who knew what else they might be capable of, they were going in relatively blind.

Despite all her apprehension, fear and dread she couldn’t just let whatever was happening continue. If they were to go into the catacombs she had to be there, like she used to. She wasn’t afraid back then and she shouldn’t be now. The thought process repeated as she gripped the side of the truck and pulled herself up and over the bed, touching down on the street. Trembling, she refused to take a step back. “Alright, here we are. This is fine, we're going to do great.” Eva said, her words encouraging, yet her eyes turned from their typical redish to a balefire blue, the same color as her lantern fire. Eva put her hand out for Sara, ready to transform and head into combat.

Jarvis Briseis - Deadly Trails (March 28th, 2067; 11: 00 am)

At least the decision was made fast.

Everyone, besides Adrian–who seemed to just want to get going–, seemed to agree the 2-step process (going in pairs) was best. Eloise, their soul perception specialist, gave them all their directions; Ashi and Adrian would be heading southeast, Eloise and Sage northeast, leaving Zari and himself to take on the opponent(s) directly East.

“The direction of the rising sun, huh?”

Eyes still on the trail of ants, Jarvis didn’t react until he felt Zari’s touch. The squatting bloodsucker ‘heard’ Zari’s silent desire loud and clear, his body glowing blue as he reshaped himself into a clawed gauntlet around the meister’s right hand and they jogged off. Well, Zari jogged off. Jarvis was simply the gauntlet.

A familiar connection formed.

Through it, Jarvis was able to feel Zari’s anxiety and worry over Adrian. The weapon’s soul yawned. “Neither do I. Just stay focused on the task and we’ll get it done that much faster.”

As their wavelengths evened, Jarvis (or at least a fragment of himself) found himself back in a dungeon-like basement where a chained-individual and the ticking of a grandfather clock provided backdrop for him to work; The closer their souls were, the more easily Jarvis could hear Zari’s thoughts, after all. He could more easily maintain their link while Zari did the fighting as well. They still couldn’t resonate. Jarvis still couldn’t quite figure out why attempts at amplifying Zari’s soulfire wavelength resulted in nothing at best and ended haphazardly at worst. However, since the Shumie mission, they practiced enough that Jarvis could cross the link that connected their souls with relative ease–provided Zari let him, of course.

Jarvis curled on the cold basement floor of Zari’s soul space and closed his eyes. He could still see the world outside. Hear, through Zari’s specialized ears, the sounds of nature as he and Zari moved closer to their targets. For now, the demon gauntlet simply observed their surroundings and assisted with wavelength control...should it be necessary. Meisters that couldn't control their own wavelengths ought be ashamed of themselves. That said, Jarvis was prepared to handle any sudden leeching of his own wavelength with...relative...grace as well. Rolling over, the soul fragment pulled a bag of chips from his pockets and started to munch. “Maiden might be hard-headed, but he isn’t stupid.”

The immediacy with which the pink-haired diplomat had whirled upon her left Bellamira grasping for words. She smiled uncertainly at her closeness; while Mira supposed this was casual for Jun, it was unusual for someone to be so interested, and Jun’s amazement persuaded a grim “thanks, you too,” as an end to their greeting. The attention wouldn’t last, though, and Jun’s focus caught on her own partner before finally, gracefully, quietly settling on Starwulf as the group followed in the footsteps of their most eager peer. There was a feeling of anxiety tugging at the back of her head; it painted this all in a sort of futile light but there was nothing to do but go along with it. It wasn’t dislike that fuelled that kind of apathy: these people were her teammates, and by rights, she should have been just as excited to meet and work with them as they were to her. That grim prognosis only solidified as she came to a stop in front of their mentor, off to the side of Jun and the other boy who’d already been In the water.

He was a drill sergeant. There was nothing to do about it; Bellamira held a grim reservation as she silently moved toward the rocks on the beach. The introduction was old news. They’d met before, however briefly. She knew the drill. Let him do his thing, do your time, get home and smoke whatever you want. Internally, she cursed herself for failing for warn Gia. Her own pack of smokes was tucked securely inside her long leather boots where they were unlikely to fall out or be discovered. This guy was old-fashioned, no two ways about it, but she declined to elaborate on the question front – carefully watching her classmates.

Jun spoke first, which was unsurprising. Her motions were over-the-top; Bellamira bit back a whisper of bitterness and reminded herself that there was no harm in being light of spirit. It was the kind of attitude she found irritating; unkindness was not an answer to those problems but it was a temptation of them. The energetic girl had her own joy. She didn’t need to stamp on it.

But Temperance was next, already working with the stakes, asking what they were for. That was a good question, and one she’d been wondering herself, but he didn’t answer either of them. He continued on with his brawl, and the kid that had already been there moved into the crowd, right toward Jun. Bellamira watched with a keen gaze. It occasionally flickered back to the men slapping each other around, but she seemed unconcerned, preoccupied with the pushup goal. If she had enough time, maybe she’d double it.

Starwulf was not a man she’d expected to showboat, necessarily, but it made sense in the way that gravel pairs with dirt paths. There are lots of uses for gravel, but it’s often used to pave dirt paths, and it’s never a surprise when gravel is poured onto a path for that purpose: but gravel can be used for other things, and paths are just as well untrodden, which encapsulated her complex feelings on the unnecessary nature of hand to hand combat for entertainment purposes south of ten o’clock in the goddamn morning. Starwulf’s ability alone made him a force in this sort of demonstration but made it feel almost futile.

But, of course, there had been an ulterior motive for his exhibition. On top of one of the stakes, taunting them from above, he seemed confident in his ability – or, well, at least their lack of ability. The thought made Bellamira’s lip curl. Gia’s dedication to the mission led to her push her scraped hands off the ground, wiping them down on her pants as she strode back to the group at large; they now surrounded Starwulf almost in the round: just mingling about his ankles, really.

Artem was perceptive enough to notice her approach, at least. As he offered his hand, she laughed, reaching for him and stumbling in an approximation of clumsy dancing - “catch this.”.

He climbed up a pole immediately, and in a way she grimaced internally; it was all the spoolwork of flying a kite with none of the real payoff when she considered the blank wall that faced her and by Death needed some sort of input. It was with a tinge of regret she left her classmates to the strategizing; she’d always envied the allowance of speech in combat to meisters even if they could understand each other just fine. He could kick your ass, she advised her partner drily, but you might be faster.

The tension in the truck and everyone’s emotions were nauseating. It was making her dizzy. If the brimstone and smoke weren’t clear indicators of their surroundings, she probably wouldn’t be able to think clearly. But right now, they had a mission, and everyone fighting was getting on her nerves. First, Gauss, then Nadia, then Gauss again, then Dani trying to alleviate what she could. Eva was beginning to unravel mentally from all this stress and it was making her rather upset. She could smell fear from both Dani and Eva, and irritation from everyone else. Even Emmett had that tinge of irritation to his soul scent.

If anything, it reminded her of her siblings. They’d constantly fight about stupid shit like this, sling insults at each other, and it was only until after either her, her oldest brother, or her parents went into try and compromise with them to get them to calm down.

Thankfully, Emmett did what he could to alleviate some of that tension, if not all of it. But it didn’t include much of a game plan for each specific person, just direction and what they were doing. She held onto the wall and dug her feet in as they swerved out of the way of a falling structure of a building. As Emmett said to be ready, Sara got up, her knees bent as she put her hair up in a ponytail and pulled out a gas mask and set it over her head, careful of her ears. She then looked to everyone, her amber eyes alight with a gameplan, which she shot off in quick order.

“Alright! Nadia and Dani are our best bet in distracting the enemy and figuring out what they do. Cautious and more forward advances have their pros and cons but one isn’t inherently better than the other. We can use one advance to cover the weaknesses of the other. Eva and I will do what we can to aid both of you. Gauss and Noah, if you want, you can take a bit more of a stealthy approach into the catacombs with myself and Eva proving as distractions to keep them from noticing you so you can scout easier.” Remembering Nadia literally busting through walls during their training, she looked at her. “Nadia, if you want to bust down walls in the catacombs when you get there, be careful when doing so. Too many busted down walls and the enemy will flank you easier or it could cause a cave in and we’ll all be stuck.”

She felt like she suggested more than commanded. She didn’t want to tell them what to do, she wanted to give them an opportunity to shine and do what they felt they would be better at. She nearly fell, grabbing a hold of a seat as the truck skidded to a halt, she grabbed the offered jerky and practically inhaled it, then pocketed the grenades.

She leapt out with surprising agility as soon as the truck stopped, her blood pumping. She looked at Eva, seeing her eyes shine a different color. She lied. Sara shook her head and extended her hand for her. Even after seeing that thing jump up and hit the helicopter, she didn’t seem to be that bothered.
“Hey, it’s going to be okay. We got this.” Sara believed what she said. She wasn’t lying. She grabbed Eva’s hand and gave her a soft smile. “We will be great. Now.”

She commanded. Her soul, even though Eva couldn’t resonate with her, held a resolute steadiness. She was like a rock for Eva to hold onto within that raging storm of fear and dread Eva constantly fought against. Within her mind, once Eva could hear her, she spoke. ‘And Eva, they are both technically right. Use that dread, that fear, to overcome obstacles you normally wouldn’t by weaponizing it. Think, yes, but don’t think too long. Always be on your feet.’

Gauss had a solid-ish plan, despite it being hard to plan in general with what limited information they got. The scene evaluation that Noah could really give was that Paris was literally turning into hell. It sounded as if Thaddeus was more about the scout, support and giving aid to the civilians than he was about doing any sort of damage to the skeletons. Noah grabbed a grenade and a gas mask, putting it on and testing it. It felt suffocating, but it was better than breathing in all that smoke on the off chance he had to transform back.

When Gauss spoke to Eva, Noah felt a twinge of irritation. Why? It was only going to cause problems because he knew Nadia had a piece to say about that.

While he was only partially correct, Nadia had a bone to pick with literally everything that was said. He held his head in his hands, clearly frustrated by the fighting but really not wanting to expend energy to try and lessen it because all that he wanted to say would have angered either Nadia or Dani. He was right when Nadia had something to say about it. Gauss then shot back with his own, slinging an insult. Regardless if it was obvious she was being an idiot, he didn’t think Nadia would care enough. He said his concerns, but even Noah - who liked to take the cautious route - knew that even a bit of recklessness could get answers far better than playing it safe. Sara knew that too, he knew. She was the one who helped him see that, no matter how much it gave him a heart attack.

He couldn’t think of that now though. Gauss was his partner now, not Sara.

Dani tried to quell the fighting with what she could of her own anger, and even he was thinking Gauss was a bit heavy-handed in his words. He just took off the gas mask and let it sit on his head as he lazily looked at everyone, clearly done with all their stupidity.

Emmett sounded off, reiterating their mission objective, what he knew, and what the grenades did. He nodded and looked at the grenades with some interest after digging in his feet into the truck’s bedding as they swerved out of the way of a column. He also took a jerky from Eva, eating it rather lazily as he grabbed a couple grenades to throw in his pocket.

It was then Sara’s turn to pipe in, but it was far more constructive. While Emmett gave direction, Sara suggested what they all could do to help. It sounded pretty good, as well. Let the brute do the brute work and let the ones more cautious do the things that require a bit more caution. It did worry him that Sara would be pulled from both sides, but he hoped Emmett and Zelda would be there for either side if they had trouble.

“To be honest, that’s the most amount of sense in plannin’ I’ve ever heard ‘er come up with.” He held the seat as the car skidded to a stop, then hopped out after Gauss would, putting on his gas mask. He looked at Gauss, nodding to show his readiness. If Gauss needed a weapon, he’ll transform.

The soul space within him only held a bit of irritation, but there was a sense of emptiness within him. Like that ominous and depressing cobblestone street within that oppressing, thick fog. It wasn’t that he was afraid. He was more thinking that their lack of team cohesiveness would cause Sara to fail and then the team would crumble.

And now they had that thing looking at them. It was at this point he wished Nadia would deal with it.

Aye, this was disappointing.

The fighting behind them had her thinking that if this were some road trip, she would act like a parent and turn this fucking truck around. But she wasn’t their parent, she wasn’t at the wheel, and this definitely wasn’t some fancy road trip.

Emmett took control of what he could, with Sara piping up right before they skidded to a halt. Watching the skeletons trying to reach the helicopter had her gritting her teeth. Figuring the kids would deal with the skeleton looking at them, she looked to Emmett then grabbed a gas mask before hopping out of the truck. Her soul space resolute and ready, she’ll transform when Emmett needs her. Putting on the gas mask, she hurried to Emmett’s side and followed him if he were to run and transform if he needed a weapon.

As Raphael pulled out another cage, he chuckled at her comment on the ‘boxes inside of boxes’. It kind of was. Raphael didn’t care if it was going to be Maria physically helping or that of her dolls, he just needed help regardless. However, he didn’t want to ask for help. His pride and, by extension his madness, refused him to. Favor for a favor was the closest he could do to ask for help. He nodded at her caution, smiling. “Ah, I figured. I can oil up their weapons and armor. I don’t know if it’s a good idea for me to do the dolls. I might miss a spot or I may fuck up your intricate webbing ya got in there as veins.”

After oiling down Maria’s dolls’ weapons and armor as a sort of break from opening up the crates, he had opened up a singular crate with a chest inside as Chanterelle came back from her excursion. Apparently, she ran into some spiders and looked a bit worse for wear. Right as he was about to open another crate, the sand became displaced as things rose further down the beach. After getting a close look, they were humongous crabs. His eyes widened.

Their screeching caused Raphael to cover his ears. Shit, this was bad.

Then there was no sound. He looked around, confused why he couldn’t hear the crabs or anyone or-
“...” He tried to speak, but obviously saying “shit” didn’t work. He realized his spells that required verbal components wouldn’t work. He shook his head and grabbed his book from his satchel, Demon Tool lengthening in his hand. He looked up to see Maria and her dolls attacking one crab after Rand’s orders were to focus on one of the smaller targets. They were all huge! Rand seemed to be squaring up with the largest one. He was the son of Maba and a mentor, so he trusted that Rand didn’t need help.

Instead, he got an idea and smirked. He needed to get up there. He ran up to Ark and patted his shoulder. He held out his hand facing down, pointed at himself then set down his two fingers on the 'ground' and he raised it up, then pointed at the crab. He hoped that Ark would get that he needed to get on the crab and needed his help to raise the floor.

Once he was up there, his chain - which was still lengthening and was busy coiling around his arm - will break off from his Demon Tool, then he can form a hook on each end and swing the ends into the armor of the beast so he can yank it back and expose its underbelly. Or to topple it over, as he doesn’t think crabs could even get out from being on their backs. Unless… Unless those were turtles he was thinking about.

The morning routine was about as boring as it could be. Wake up, fix coffee, check news, stretch, morning work out, it was boring but a necessity to be so…..oh… and check on the damn furball to make sure it didn’t end up dead. The last one was a new edition for sure, but after a week they stopped complaining as much over it. Finding a food bowl for the kitten of the Shuumie as well as a water bowl was easy, but with how much a new thing needed she just found ones that replenish themselves. Less work, less likely to get an earful that she killed someone’s pet from neglect. As she was finishing her work out she received a rather sudden text, her eyes casting over to see the words previewed on the screen. Midori… and asking to meet for a mission… with Zosar?

Huh…. Wonder what shit is up now…

The demon weapon chuckled dryly, her body rigid as she was mid-push up. A moment the Shuumie kitten did not waste, the small furred creature walking under her and rubbing against her stiffened arms. Adra rolled her eyes and gave the cat a head pat before sitting up, checking the message properly as she stood up and headed to the showers to wash off.

A quick shower later and some braiding, the weapon ended up in front of her closet. She reached out casually to grab a pair of sweats, the hand gripping the clothes hanger… but never lifting it off the rack as her brain stopped her. It was like a gear missing teeth, the cogs in her brain spinning without traction and ended only in confusing the girl. Her eyes couldn’t help but drift, her confusion ending as she made eye contact with the hung outfit that was sealed in clear plastic. The old school uniform she had, one she worn for so long. Black with red trim and accents, her eyes narrowing at her own thought process as if to question itself why. Despite the question her hand drifted over to the plastic and let her hand glide across it. She knew what the outfit meant to her. Bad and good. Freedom and a crutch. The outfit held no power physically, but the state she was in when wearing and the injuries she got still fresh as if it was woven into it….

And yet as she ripped into the plastic and threw the outfit on the bed she didn’t care. She was taking back her life, and as she buttoned her shirt up and clipped her skirt she smirked at the victory. The outfit she put up once upon a time now was no longer hurting her whatsoever, this small fear that was in her closet now just some clothes she can wear once more. Her confidence grew like roots through concrete with purpose and force, chuckling too herself as she felt a twinge of smug energy on her face. It was almost like the mental seal she worked for not too long ago was now official in her eyes as she stood in a full length mirror.

She soon made her way to the meeting location in her old outfit, heading up the stairs with a light jog, soon zeroing in on a certain jail bird and golem ninja. She came up the steps without a wave or word, soon silently standing and looking at the two waiting agents. Mostly staring at Zosar in slight disbelief as if surprised to see him despite being text that he would be here.
Seeing is believing…

…..so what they got pity programs for the sad inmates? And do they need ninja sponsors?

Nadia Semyonov - Paris, France

Staring right at Gauss as his words left his mouth, Nadia's gaze turned sternly as she had her right-hand darting to her knife.

"You talk very big, but you'll need to try a little harder. Still though I..."

As she was about to say more, everyone else seemed to have something else to say or add on. "Tch." Next Dani would grab her, stopping her with her own words that she used a time or several to calm down the weapon, remembering her own rage at Nadia a time or two for it, she does something rather curious, and maybe embarrassing given the current context as she lifted her left hand and ran it atop Dani's head and through her hair with her fingers in brief petting movement as if to thank the girl as she nods and speaks a loud, lowering her hand back down. "Yes. A time and place... Do not think I'll forget this." The last bit seemed aimed at both Dani and Gauss for differing reasons as she lowered her hand, only to have the Mentor stop her from saying more.

Cutting a glare towards him, she said nothing for a time, curious in part with the sudden change of personality of Emmett since this all kicked off. Maybe he was one of those work hard, play harder sorts. At least his instructions on the Grenades were of use, his threats, or rather, facts aside. Picking one up, she tosses it up and down in her right hand, still not back to smirking as the world around them seemed to go more to shit as the werewolf added her piece to the conversation, and helpful at that, she was at least able to form a plan rather than force a plan, even if that plan was just telling herself and Dani to go wild. Still, it was agreeable bit of coaxing, Nadia seen no reason to refuse it, even if it was a bit manipulative.

"Da, da, I will not break apart the French and what they have more than neede-" Before she finished the truck slammed to a stop and slid sideways with the sound of rubber being burned on pavement, followed by something collapsing behind them. Before orders are even given out, Nadia was already putting on the mask, in her youth she knew one only had precious seconds to equip themselves, emptying her pockets as best as she could and making use of the leg holsters, she left a copy of War and Peace on the bench seats as she grabbed a couple of the grenades and shoved them into the pouch and then shoved the other devices in the pockets she had, or fitting them between her holster straps and legs, before crouching and jumping out of the truck, her muffled voice calling out;

"Dani! To me! Put on a mask, carry what you can or need! Quickly!" Calling upon her wavelength to the fullest extent she could without a weapon to amplify, Nadia observes the situation.

With that Nadia takes note of the two flaming skeletons, this in a manner reminded her of the legends on how the world was founded, but ancient tales were of little help in the here and now, turning her focus and attention on the one hanging from the helicopter, Nadia points at it with her right index finger and a closed fist with a shout, "Durak neschastnyi! Ulof!" (You unlucky idiot! Catch!) With that she hoped the beast would take offense as in her left she took one of her spare knives and threw it with full force at the would-be hitchhiker, leaving the grounded one for the other two to deal with. She hoped this would be enough to gain the creatures ire, otherwise they didn't have that many options to deal with a flyer... Well not that she knew of at any rate, with that her right hand remains open, waiting for and expecting Dani.

Daniella Ethalyn - Truck to hell
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The gesture gave pause to Dani, her expression blanking a moment as if to process. Afterwar, her resting bitch face returned with a click of her tongue as she took one of the offered jerky sticks and munched on it with a pout.
Dani's attention shortly thereafter turned to Emmett, who for once looked stern. She didn't know he had stern, but its sudden appearance seemed to shut up everyone involved as he moved to show them how the gizmos worked and reiterate the objective before moving onto the nature of the creatures. Dani wasn't the most studious, nor did she understand magic that much, but these things had to be, right?
Regardless, then everything went to even more shit. Dani reached to grasp anything to steady herself, her body jolting with the truck as it glided to a halt. Flaming skeletons sounded kind of lame, like an entry enemy from a video game, but the way these things moved creeped her out. Their movements were janky, yet fluid and animated as they crawled, lurched and leaped.
The Demon Weapon had one of the masks hung around her neck, and shortly after began to grab what she could store as per Nadia's wishes. However, prior to stepping out, she glanced at Eva, curiously deciding to impart words of comfort, or what were intended to be. "You're a weapon. Just be there for your meister and let them do their thing. Yours is pretty tough and a fuckin' werewolf, so you'll be fine," She assured, slipping the mask on and following after Nadia as Sara tried to compromise with a division of labor. It was admirable, but clear that everyone in this group was going to just do what they were going to do.
"I'm not going to even ask what moonspeak you just said," Dani further commented before her body transitioned to light and shot into the giant's right hand.
He didn't answer her question. Not right away, at least. Temperance didn't like that, she'd prefer to know what goal they had. She was also sure that the others here would be in the same boat of wanting to know. So Temperance stood there for a minute or so, watching their apperant instructor waiting for answer. When it wasn't answered though, seemingly ignored or perhaps he didn't hear the young woman, Temperance just huffed and continued to lug logs for Erik with the help of others. Her outfit choice for the day was definitely unfortunate, this was not a manual labor fit. Though that was her own fault assuming they'd be with someone who didn't believe in work the first day. A lot of instructors she knew were like that, her father excluded of course, but it was usually a day to get all the awkward introductions out of the way. Bad clothing choices or not. Her biggest regret though would definitely be not bringing any lotion with her, her hand were going to need it. In any case, the stakes would be places in their various spots before too long with pretty much everyone helping out. Once things were finished with the stakes, Temperance would dust herself off and slink to the back of the group. Her back felt exposed anytime she turned so someone was out of her field of veiw. This made it easier for her to observe them, and their teacher as well. Though seeing the table, and then the mouth guards... Temperance couldn't help but let out a sigh.
Knowing of Starwulf, the stories of his skil and the legend in pretty much each and every one of the Black Star dojos, this wasn't really a surprise. Slap Boxing was definitely... something. It was a staple in the Black Star dojo's, and a favorite of her dad. He loves showing off with it, but believed it was an essential part of training. This however, was clearly meant to look like a protege or a friend challenging Starwulf to a match, it was more than that. They were showing off for a reason. And Temperance did have to admit it was a fairly impressive display of power, Temperance was more focused on trying to figure out what they were showing off for. That question would be answered pretty much as soon as the slap boxing was over. They were going to be fighting him. And furthermore, her question about the stakes were answered. It was a punishment. They just spent however long it was, establishing their punishment if they couldn't grab a bandana. "Well...I guess it could be worse," The woman mumbled, sunddnely pleased with one unseen aspect of her outfit.
As everyone started moving to partner up and say something mildly cheesy about how they're definitely going to get a bandana despite this guy most certainly outclassing them all, she would shimmy her pants down. Instead of this being a case of indecent exposure though, it would be revealed she was wearing a pair of skintight athletic shorts. Which she quickly had to adjust thanks to her her thighs eating them. Anyway, she'd put the pants to the side, ensuring the bun she had her hair in was tight. "We're definitely pulling stakes up later," Temperance said, more to herself than anyone else. It seemed to her they were all going in buddy buddy with their partners. Which left Temperance at a slight disadvantage. She and Miruko had pretty much been ignoring each other's existence, and she didn't expect that to change in the next five seconds.
With that in mind, Temperance raised her arms above her head, leaning to either side to crack her back. As she straightened, Temperance let her arms fall back to her sides, rolling her shoulders a bit. "Well, I guess I'm ready."
"You best not forget a word, dorogaya," Gauss with a tone so starkly contrasting his previous one that it by nature was clear sarcasm. He expected only Nadia would understand his final word choice and why it only underlined that sarcasm that much more. It was, of course, one of the few words he learned while in the hospital of her native tongue, if only to use at a moment just like this. It seemed by his proper pronunciation and vowel stresses, he even practiced it. How sweet.
Given the truck came to an abrupt halt soon after and the entire group was effectively ejected into combat, or at least sent with such urgency it might as well have been an ejection, little time was allotted to dwell on what he was sure would circle back as yet another argument. He wondered if Emmett or Zelda knew any Russian... he was not above learning the language just to sling insults at Nadia. Little time to consider these thoughts now as he and Noah were leaping out the truck and readying themselves for combat. He adjusted the mask on his face to assure its seal was complete; the pungent air around them would only lessen his stamina if he allowed it. A simple nod to Noah's suggestion to transform, and Gauss was there armed for combat.
Gauss activated his Soul Perception and with it was able to get a more clear picture of what was going on, at least for the two skeletons nearest them. An erratic, almost grotesque wavelength pulsed through them, seemingly in conjunction with those equally disturbing and erratic movements of theirs. It did not stem from a soul, but it had a source. A concentration of wavelength similar to a soul, a psuedo-soul perhaps? Whatever it was, Gauss had never read about such a thing in any Plasmology book he had his hands on. Souls were souls, there was nothing lesser than them. The closest thing might be golem cores, but this was spiritual energy. Gauss knowledge of how golems worked in general was limited regardless; Maria might have been a useful reference here, had there time for a mid-fight call.
Alas, there was not.
A deep inhale and a calm of his mind put Gauss right in the mood he wanted to be. He could feel Noah. Something down about him. Depressed, maybe. Burdened. Gauss was unable to put his finger right on the problem, but Noah had something going on. 'It may be her most planning, but I don't like the plan,' Gauss responded to the previous comment Noah made. While he was calming himself and steeling his soul for the marathon of combat this would be, he was also mulling over the instructions Sara provided. They had an inherent flaw. Sara did not consider the roles the weapons would play in this upcoming fight. Dani, a blade, was incredibly ineffective against these opponents. Alternatively, Eva likely had the most offensive capability. Noah, the most range, and while his blunt strikes wouldn't deal the most damage, they would likely at least do more in succession than slashes from Dani.
In short, Sara should have thought more highly of herself--and Eva. Analyzing their inherent strengths and weaknesses against a foe would merit the best outcome. Unlike, y'know, throwing a fucking dagger thirty meters at a skeleton. This calm, analytical mindset extended further than his current complacent actions on the battlefield. His soul possessed that same pull, that same nigh-gravitational force as if it was the center of the universe between he and his partner. But, it was calm. As if turning the foggy streets of Noah's downtrodden mindset a light fog of the morn, leaving dew on the fresh autumn grass. It was cool and quiet and calm. It did not seek to rip Noah out of his spiritual stupor, but content to have its mild effect nonetheless.
'I say we wait for an opening, Noah. We didn't master our magnetic canon, Sara hasn't made her distraction, and I don't know the fuck Nadia is doing. So we either dive in to block the first blow they can't dodge, or aim for the skull or ribcage on the first one we see defenseless," Gauss informed Noah. He then allowed his wavelength to course through him, amplifying him not to his fullest, but to enough to match and slightly exceed what he saw in the opponents thus far. If this was a test of endurance, he needed to start stamina reservation now. If Gauss was good at anything, it was controlling his wavelength. He found that much easier than controlling his mouth.
"Nice to see you, too, Adra," Midori responded with a fairly apparent amount of sarcasm directed at her inquiry about pity programs.
"But, no. After this mission, Zosar is going to be a free man again. Maybe even freer than you," Midori commented, this time adding some clarification to her regarding him as a prisoner. Not much he could do about being called a ninja, though. He was, after all, an assassin by nature.
Midori then descended the stairs without so much as a word to follow him. They had a fair amount of ground to cover, and it was to be done on foot. Including through the city. Until they left immediate earshot of anyone that could even potentially be eavesdropping, he couldn't relay them much more information. If the two wanted to catch up or discuss ownership of the apparently unnamed Shuumie kitten that Zosar inadvertently grabbed before Midori could bag them up. Midori thought on that a bit, realizing how frustrated he was that everyone just referred to the whole lot of them as "Shuumies" when they had a proper name. It was akin to calling every adhesive medical strip a Band-Aid, or all flavor packets Kool-Aid, or just anything of that nature. Not technically accurate. And, while that wouldn't normally be an issue, when one of the fundamental elements of that mission was to research the target and use that understanding to their advantage, the naming misnomer rubbed him the wrong way.
Though, what did it matter when he wasn't to be their mentor much longer? He had more important things to teach them in his limited time.
It was some time before the three reached the western exit of the city, and some time further time before they left it far enough that he was sure there was no one listening. This, also, was the part that sucked. At least, for a short while. It seemed like Midori was about to make them walk along the highway in the blistering desert heat, but that did not last long. Upon arriving at the first outpost along the road, Midori hurried along to greet the guard, get a key, and open up a chain link fence to around the building displaying... Dune buggies!
caption.jpg
"Once we're in the dunes, I'll explain more. We have to pick something up first," Midori explained to them. He nodded to one of the dune buggies, then tossed one of the keys to Zosar. "I know you can drive, I read your reports. Adra is with you. We'll talk over comms on the way there," he went on before hopping over somewhat excitedly to hop in his buggy and rev it up. Irony being he could likely run faster than these, but that didn't seem to dull the obvious excitement he had getting into it.
Nadia Semyonov - Paris, France
Listening to Gauss's remark, him calling her a term for a significant other, even if in jest made her skin crawl. "It is not fun when they try and learn what you are saying. Maybe I should pick another language or say hell with it and curse in English." She says a bit to Dani and herself, as she waited to see if the knife did as it was intended, and the results were better than expected. Or mayhap exactly as expected. The knife lodges itself into the lower ribs and gains the attention of the abomination, who let go of its hold of the copter, landing in a crouch, Nadia was immediately at its heels. She knew full well the limits of Dani as a weapon and of herself, even if her nature now was to be "calm" as she fought in order to resonate with Dani, she did still enjoy it, to crush an opponent, to conquer what laid forth... It was also a bit nice having the chance to fight in a manner that showed the use of the DWMA, this was how she could help the Civilians.
From her new position and with Dani providing feedback, Nadia lashed out with a powerful kick to the upper body of the flaming skeleton, seemingly undeterred by the fire and flame, she knew brief touching exposure did not burn, but direct and prolonged did, though she also had the defenses of a Meister to endure a bit longer. No sooner did the kick land did the skeleton slam into a car denting it as it did so as Nadia closed in once more, to her surprise the figure stood up and rattled its bones, grabbing the knife from it's back and throwing it back at Nadia who in turn dodged and dived low, before jumping up in a kneeling knee strike for it's face, cracking the jaw and sending flames whooshing back. "Sorry Dani." Why became clear as she did not use the blade as a sword but struck pummel into the chest, studying the creature, she went for a flurry of slashes as it withstood them all with bits of damage here and there, or even portions cut off, Nadia was starting to sweat as she went back and even had to defend a time or two from the fiery assault, though it was clear she was winning and would win, depending on what the conditions of a win were.
Ducking low, Nadia swung the blade to hook under its legs pulling its feet from underneath it, for all of its endurance and power it was not particularly bright. Getting a little winded, Nadia would have to take the rest seriously and make use of the grenades, resonance may also be needed if numbers of them were around. Overall, she was sure they were an even money deal for an unskilled meister and even some of the one stars. For now she would use the classical method to kill undead things. A sharp stab to where the heart would be through the sternum and then a stomp of her right leg, as her left hand held the blade, caving in the skulls as a small crater formed beneath the monster, soul force... Though something wasn't quite right as Nadia laughed, a blue pale haze spreading for as a cold frost thought the skeleton at its core. Getting up, she wiped some sweat from her brow and caught her breath as she released Dani and looked at the remains of the skeleton, it was no longer on fire, what would happen now?
She had not had time to look at the battle with the second one but decides to speak as she lifts up the gas mask for some fresh air, speaking to Dani as she did so.
"Debil that was a bit of work, how are they so strong yet so many? That bitch might be here afterall. Maybe I am stupid, I almost forgot I could do that. Ha. May have been easier? But I'm tired for now.. How are you holding up, Dani? We'll leave the second one to them, I think we'll be okay, but they are a little too tough for me to just rip them apart.. But with the grenades, Soul Force Icy, hand to hand, resonance and with some swordplay we can fight multiples and win if careful. I want to keep with the plan of drawing in and destroying as many of them as we can. But to conserve our energy we may have to swap in and out of our union. Least we burn up everything."
With everyone seeming pulsed to go the only concern was Temperance not being armed yet, but that was something neither Artem nor Bella had a hand to play in. With not much else either in the realm of Jun or Gia arming up it seemed the current duo atop the poles would need to step first. Inside the soul space of Artem where Bellamira would now reside would fully form this time into a ballroom with a soft piano constantly playing and one lone elegant table near the middle of the room. The piano itself had a small couch rather than a step stool. The room was laced with emerald cloth all around, stained mural glass showing the flighted tale of a single song bird, and a dark blue floor. The spool in her hands glowed ethereally, but she moved to the couch, unwinding their bond in her hands to tentatively weave, mind focusing back into the tip of her blade. Flexing, bending in the light. This was an unfamiliar place, but its style was still familiar to the woman, and she sat up straight as expectation in such a space would garner.
‘Hopefully it's not too strange,’ Artem spoke into his soul space as he eyed their mentor. Given Starwulfs obvious fighting style there was only one starting projection Artem could configure.
‘My opinion is to distract him in two phases, aim for his foot, but instead derail his footing and try to strike him with an upward assault should give the rest enough time to chime in, and arm also give us a good gauge of how he's going to perform in this mock battle… your thoughts,’ Artem asked as his singular standing foot held fast, and his free form foot in the air started to curve, preparing to arc in to add momentum to a spin. He wanted to hear Bella’s thoughts first as from here on there conversation time would have to be fast, with short abated words.
“He’s a wall of man,” she responded in a breath, the metered exhale that came with smoking, fingers yanking on a snag in the fabric as she moved to the slow tempo of the piano, “but we should get that ball rolling.”
‘Agreed,’ Artem mulled confused to Bellamira lack of input, but agreeing that they needed to strike now. With a slow spin what at first looked liked it would be a ballet jump turned into a fall as Artem fell off the pole. One… two… three upon the third second Artem mid fall kicked off the pole he had originally been stationed on. With a series of minor bursts of wavelength amplification Artem started to pinball between the poles before appearing at Starwulfs left side slashing forward with his attacking hand.
Yet no attack would connect as the attack proved to be a feint with Bellamira switched to his other hand having sliced the pole clean through at a angle the. Starwulf’s weight would cause the top of the pole to slide off as a smaller piece as Artem fell a little lower before doing a full upward ballet lung spinning like a reverse top as he aimed to perform a triad of attacks on the arm with the bandanas aiming to cut on off.
This however as originally intended also acted as a good distraction allowing Gia, or Temperance a good chance to combo in or work off of using the distractions, and lose of balance to their advantage. The problem is if anything while maybe being a good opening distraction it was doubtful to have a long lasting effect if any on Starwulf.
“A disappointment,” Starwulf muttered, mostly to himself, but still audible from the range both Bella and Artem would be at. Artem was quick, Starwulf would give him that, but speed without direction was hardly a strategy. If his attempt was to cause a distraction, then it was logical, but there was an abrupt flaw in that logic. Artem didn’t know how fast Starwulf was.
Each movement the Meister made with his scalpel was not hard to read, especially with Soul Perception. Each flare up, each amplification, each slash with Bella. The slash to the stake was creative, and probably the highlight of the attack, but this follow up to try and slice the bandana, that was a flaw. It put Artem in range.
The sliding stake was in fact a problem. His only leverage now was the friction between pieces of wood and the diagonal cut. But, in the immortal words of Archimedes: Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall move the world. Without even sparking his wavelength, Starwulf quickly caught the slashing hand of Artem with Bella. This did result in a slight cut between the webbing of his middle and ring finger, but that was a fair trade off.
“The problem with dance is that you telegraph your movements,” Starwulf said, giving Artem a piece of advice with his fighting style. More specifically, all of the wasted energy pinballing himself around and large swooping movements necessary to first cut the stake, then aim for the bandanas on his arm. As fancy of a display as it was, it did not stand up to an opponent that could respond to such an attack.
With his hand caught, Starwulf used the weight of Artem in a throw. This served two purposes. To launch the dancer in a rough, powerful toss directly at Temperance, noting that if Miroku had transformed, she would be the only ranged opponent that might be ready to deal damage, and also to use that momentum to hop off the stake and to the one directly behind it, Artem mid-air being the weight for this movement now as opposed to the stake with far less force to counter this movement.
Without a doubt the man was indeed leagues above them, and while not going full out was still keeping a good tip above scale on their own levels. Starwulf however had misread one particular note of what Artem had done. While the shark tooth One Star had indeed taken a hit he now had traded it for something more worthwhile… knowledge, and the element of surprise. Starwulfs movement mannerisms had now in slowler capability had been showcased. A throw was a very bodily languaged move in any form of combat it showcased the rotation cabablility of ones own upper body including muscle curvature from how ones back arched.
However now the more important element was not ending up as a nuisance to his teammates Temperance in particular. Midair midway towards the red head Artem enacting a ballet manner twisted into a spin throwing his left leg to the left exerting a sudden vacuumed reverse shunting Artems trajectory through his leg just enough to crash barely away at Temperance’s side giving the the girl more ample time to dodge away. Artem parkoured rolled onto the ground wildly spinning until inertia allowed him feet to the ground to spin a ways behind Temperances left side of view.
“Disagreed no step in dance is ever wasted,” Artem shot slowly, and strangely back at Starwulf. While it sounded more taunt than anything else Starwulf would quickly learn those pinball jumps were in fact not a display as upon contacting the stake behind him, it gave way far more than it should. It was cut. Whether it was done with multiple cuts or all at once, it mattered not. Artem was not the only graceful individual on the field, however, as a shift of weight forward to counteract the leap back would be enough to keep it from sliding entirely off in any one direction. A feat any of the Meisters could likely do, if they could think of it quick enough. Still, it was a creative manipulation of the environment.
“Telegraphing is a move in of itself,” all the poles Artem had made contact with had been cut with the ballet movements a distraction from Bellamira’s blades own route throughout the leaps between the poles while switching her between his hands. The element of surprise had been played and now the knowledge was to be displayed. Problem is unless forced this move would only work once. It was now time for Gia, and Temperance to play some cards while Artem reworked his stratagem hand along with recover from the aggressive toss added in his own torque of damage from changing trajectory.
“Don’t aim for anywhere from his waist to his neck unless you're going for his back,” Artem spoke to Gia, and Temperance as he wasn’t able to stand up immediately with all the torque of using his legs to spin like that had been punishing in movement. Yet Artem would stand back up slowly eyeing Starwulf like a snake would a mongoose.
“Ladies, do you really want to trust the word of man that was just tossed back at you like a ragdoll?” Starwulf posed to them, quite sincerely. Despite the ramblings that Artem made, it was at least valiant to try and study an opponent. Starwulf was still unimpressed with the singular fact that it didn’t seem his student had realized the gap between them was vast enough to allow such rigid movements. “I would suggest you both arm yourselves and come at me at once, perhaps teach the dancer something,” Starwulf suggested, urging both of the others to engage themselves in the fight.
Zosar | Death City | DWMA Staircase
Conditioning was a powerful thing. It was the key to nurturing a desired product if one knew how to do it right. And since some of his mentors had once been part of DWMA's Intelligence branch, they knew exactly what they had been doing.
For Zosar, conditioning made it possible for him to allow the nervousness he'd been feeling in Midori's presence after the revelation of their situation, take a back seat- even if it only made him far more alert of the situation at face value. The moment they were outside, his nervous energy shifted entirely into focusing on their destination and movement around them.
For instance, when Lars shocked expression flashed into his mind as he followed Midori out into their destination, he suppressed the moment of pause it should have given him- instantly, and merely flexed his fingers as if in anticipation of being attacked from behind.
Eyes glancing behind him, before returning to look ahead.
There was no attack of course, but paranoia and stress, didn't really give a damn.
It was good thing they were going to meet Adra. He felt the need to start a conversation, but ultimately knew how fruitless that would be, conversing at this time was unnecessary at the moment and he had nothing really he felt like he wanted to discuss at the moment either.
Thinking of Adra however did not make Zosar feel as excited as he believed he should have felt. It wasn't that he wasn't happy to see her again- it was that he was worried if she was going to lay into him. There was that fear, somewhere, deep down- that she might just detest him, but not enough to walk away- just enough give to give him another shot.
That was what worried him. Trying to figure out how to fix that damage. He hadn't a good record apparently, trying to do that in the last two years after being found out- he wasn't sure how he would be able to repair that same kind of damage with someone he had only been partnered with for less than a week- and who only recently found security in their bond before it had been ripped apart by something out of his control.
He was nervous, he was concerned- just as Midori had seen, he was struggling to figure out just where he fit in in all of this.
The thought of trouble possibly stemming from within the Enlighteners lingered heavily on his mind. Becky, Hiroshi, the others- were they alright?
Unwanted thoughts. Thoughts that had no place in serving as a minor distraction as they moved circled his mind- it was only when he detected the distant familiar presence of a certain someone's soul that they approached- did Zosar's mind stabilize and return to the situation at hand immediately.
His jaws tightened.
A slap was possible. It wasn't like he hadn't gotten one before. He was expecting something. Some sort of rebuke, some sort of look telling him that the respect he had gained on their first mission, was now lost and needed to be earned all over again.
He was expecting something bitter, venomous.
What he got was a joke.
He was...staring at her. Opened his mouth, let out a little chuckle as he smiled, but it was the kind of smile that was a mix of emotions. Confusion, surprise- appreciation.
He chuckled again, but it was really just to hide how dumbfounded he was. The exchange between Adra and Midori went completely by him. He heard it, but he didn't process it. A hand went to his chin, rubbing it, in confusion.
He'd been preparing himself for a slap. Had been for days now. Some part of him had known he would meet Adra again, just wasn't sure how. What he had expected, was a punch or slap of some kind. Or some sort of insult in general. The mental defenses he'd built, were not prepared for this. Her attack sailed clear through all of them.
Adra just made a little joke at his expense and it wasn't even barbed with poison. Couldn't see it in her with his eyes when she delivered it.
Zosar, honestly didn't know how to react to that. He had expected things to go back to the way they were like before. Sure she knew he was a spy, but having to experience a setback like the rest of their team had, honestly to him, from his own experience, would have been the assumed line he would have crossed for her.
"I...really am happy to see you again. Y'know thugs like me need a friendly face to see when they get out." His smile turned to her, somber but genuine.
Meeting Sara and Midori had been a nice reminder he wasn't alone here. Wasn't essentially hated by everyone prepped to kill him if he crossed another line. Adra's lack of fury here, had left him unprepared entirely. What it did most of all, was endear him to her.
Where he had been having thoughts of if it was time to truly return to where his home really was, with the Enlighteners- now- he wasn't sure he could do that anymore.
"It's, heh, honestly I am surprised you're not mad, at me" He said, then added, as if clarifying was needed as they followed Midori to their destination.
Once they had reached the outpost, heat be damned- Zosar's eyes honed in on the buggies on the otherside of the fence. When Midori tossed him the keys, Zosar grinned fiendishly.
"Oh man, we're gonna have fun." He grinned, nudging her with his elbow as he did a little dorky hop and click of his heels. Moving swiftly towards the other unoccupied ride. Put the key in, turned it on, listened to it purr and shouted: "WOOOOOOOOO!" and just like that he was back to life. "HAHA! Get in here!" He waved Adra over.
Ark | DWMA | Dall Island
The tilt, he could feel it even as it began quickly and ceased just as suddenly. For Ark the vibrations in the earth, even with his limited range of forty feet- the link his sensory stone gave him to the earth, allowed him to detect the vibrations occuring. So when the whole place shifted, he quickly adjusted his footing. Frowning at the time he'd spent fixing this place up and their defenses, ultimately rounding up to ruined work. He'd have to circle around the place, picking out what had been damaged and rework the stone to fix the whole place. The screeching however was what made him scowl- it's sudden silence was and the magical detection he picked off Rand, was what told him that it was show time.
He smirked. The sound he made blocked thanks to Rand's spell. Hearing the instructions though gave him thought.
Working with the others against an enemy wouldn't exactly be easy. Just from watching the fights at the tournament, they all had a understanding their combat capability was, essentially all over the place since they all covered different methods to combat. Still though, there was no time to waste.
He moved to take a step away from the main base where all their stuff and equipment was secured, the place he had been double checking his work over just in case before the attack started-- and stepped forward.
That step sent a wave of his magical sensory vibration forwards. Highlighting the others up ahead. In the distance he picked up on multiple signatures. Rand was far ahead and moving towards the largest one, Maria was engaging one, Chant wasn't far by and it appeared the crabs in general seemed to be heading towards her direction which Rand and Maria were intercepting. Raphael was on the move towards him--
Wait what?
He felt the tap on the shoulder and looked the mage's direction. Seeing his movements, Ark blinked, looked at the distant crab- and then it clicked, he nodded with a thumbs up. Tapped Rand's shoulder and pointed to the ground, using his other hand to give him a signal that he would be doing it immediately.
To show him, he got into position, flexed his fingers, shifting the sandstone underneath Raphael slightly, not enough to make him lose balance but just enough to show him he was getting ready. And then once the mage was stabilized, with a flip of his hands up and a raise of his arms, Ark kept one hand open, then launched Raphael towards the target by shooting his other arm forward. Debris and stone sprinkling into the air as the stone under Rand, shot forwards at an angle and then stopped. Sending him careening in an arc upwards towards his target.
The crab that Maria approached with her assembly, screeched a silent cry of fury the moment the puppets came towards it. It shifted on the sand as though it were ice and swiped at the puppets in a wide array as it suddenly span, the sand rippling when the puppets came for its joints and underbelly. A spinning top of armored fury that came to a stop with the rippling sand underneath it causing ripples along the ground as it slid forwards, throwing balance slightly off if Maria was close enough to even feel the after effects-- then with surprising agility, given its two foot advantage over Maria in size, made a sliding charge in her direction. Swiping its smaller arms out to snap at her puppets and then coming in with a much more powerful strike with its pointed main pincer arm.
At least till its balance was thrown astray when Raphael landed from above causing it to veer off course as the hook found it's link.
In the same instant, a slab of stone came up and sucker punched the beast right between the eyes. Launching at an angle it struck it dead center, aiding in Raph's attempt, and sending the thing screeching wordlessly as it bounced off the projected stone.
At the same time Ark did this, he also turned his attention to the ones neither of the members in his party had gone after. And promptly sighed internally. Using his lava magic at that distance would just affect the others, granted he could just apply the protection spell on them all- it would also require him to do the same for Maria's puppets- and he wasn't about to waste energy doing all of that in one go just to cut loose.
It would have to be another time, to his disappointment. After failing to show much and the earful he'd gotten afterwards not just from Rand but from those that had watched- he'd been hoping to test his limits more with these Rings in an active battle- but that'd have to wait.
So instead, he tried for taking control of the rippling sand underneath one of the more distant crabs rapidly stampeding towards Chanterelle's direction-- and came up with nothing he actually wanted. When he flicked his hands up to create two pillars that would slam into the crab's powerful legs and destroy it's forward mobility, it did nothing but cause two explosive bursts of sand upwards, that were nowhere near as solid as he wanted.
This, made him pause.
The awareness they could cancel out his effect to some degree, was both alarming- and quite interesting. Their magic effected the sand in a somewhat similar but different way than his affected earthly material.
He took note of that. A sign not to get near them else he'd be in a tight spot.
Ark followed up with three diagonal projectiles of stone projecting forward with a sideways chop, and punch, each of the remaining crabs that had yet to be engaged, were struck accordingly with enough force that the pillars fractured when they made contact.
Daniella Ethalyn - Truck to hell
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Great they both talk in moonspeak now..." Dani grumbled in response to Gauss' remark. She was starting to pick up some Russian thanks to Nadia, but she never heard that word before. Probably another word for bitch, she guessed. Hearing Nadia's remark, Dani shrugged within the blade. "I'm pretty sure he's the only one who'd do that."

As the fight began, Dani breathed a calm sigh. Nadia was smacking the crap out of them, but these things really were durable. She was stronger, but they were enough of a pain that Nadia still had to try. Enough of them, and she'd certainly get fatigued. Resonance wasn't an option, but a necessity here, less they spend all this energy in extended engagements. Nadia had her limits, and she certainly wasn't in her element give ice giants probably didn't much like heat.

Transforming into a prism of light, her form expanded back into that of her full person, gas mask equipped. She wasn't the one to be concerned about in this circumstance. "Don't worry about me, use me how you need to. Mikey used to do all kinds of shit showing off... like spinnin' me around 'n making me nauseas," She stated, pulling the mask down briefly with a click of her tongue. "If she is, we shouldn't fuckin' be here, and those One-stars sure as fuck shouldn't. A vet two-star team would have to put effort in here, let alone new teams and the single stars. The fuck."

Kicking the ashy pavement beneath her in some frustration, the Demon Weapon glanced back at the others to watch how they were holding up.

Feeling Sara take her hand Eva relaxed, while the situation felt utterly out of control she felt a wash of relief. Transforming and shifting into her flail she immediately began to push the fire inside of the lantern into an inferno. ‘I know… maybe my fear comes from regret?’ Eva responded to Sara internally. ‘I’d rather not talk about it, I will work through it.’ Eva said with a sigh. ‘More importantly right now, I have an idea. Remember that lightshow I gave you when we first met? Well, I think I am going to do it again. By the looks of everything they seem rather primal, and mindless.’ Eva began to explain as the lantern began to audibly burst before collapsing inward, the flame then producing several floating lights.

Lantern clicking before rotating and opening up, the orbs darted out, flying up into the air a few feet before descending down, twirling around one another before setting into a holding pattern around Sara and Eva. ‘I think I can use these as a distraction, have them do rapid fly by passes, just enough time for us or one of them to get a good whack in. Considering they are fire, I don’t know if anything fire related I can do will do much. But, this could really make a difference, at least I hope.’ Eva mused.

“Oh, hell yeah, it will.” She grinned wide, speaking out loud, excitement spurring her body into action as her tail wagged incessantly. “Do some drive-by shooting with these orbs. I can do a bit of guerrilla warfare, too.” With a fire in her eyes rivaling that of the fire that cloaked the skeletons, she darted towards the one on the ground.

It was then that she realized that they had stopped somewhere where there would be no catacomb entrances. Oh, she guessed that maybe her pep talk earlier wouldn’t really work now, would it? Later then. She shrugged, not really caring too much.

She watched as Nadia went after the one who went after the helicopter. She then set her sights on the other one. Jumping on the truck with a swift hop, she pointed the lantern flail forwards at the creature. “Do it.” She vocalized out loud, her legs getting ready to lunge as she powered her wavelength to boost her speed and jump distance.

‘Alright, we may only have one shot at this.’ Eva said as they darted away from where they had been. Almost immediately the bumbling balls of light went after them, leaving a trail of light for a moment before that faded away. Keeping up the balls of light stayed with them, keeping rather close. Feeling Sara building up, Eva gave one of the orbiting balls a light nudge, sending it flying off at a higher rate of speed in a straight line towards the skeleton, reaching it just before they would.

The deadlight did nothing to the creature, passing by it at a rapid speed, its twinkling visage acting like a lure for the mindless creature. Since she had discovered the lights she had never thought of using them as a lure. She had always considered their almost vibrant and showy style a quirk, but having thought on it they ended up making quite the distraction if used correctly. If these creatures had something to hide their homing nature would likely make them even more useful, attaching to the creature and possibly causing it to try and whack it off. But, they seemed straight forward, so nudging them towards the skeletons would have to do.

The skeleton’s head followed the flaming orb, its skull snapping towards it. At that exact moment, Sara launched off the truck at a quick lunge, practically almost a blur as she held Eva above her head and then slammed it down as she reached the skelly, slamming the lantern against the top of the skull.

The skeleton’s bones clattered almost like a xylophone (if it were burnt) and stumbled in the opposite direction as Sara’s trajectory. Sara had done a quick somersault after the hit, her shoes digging into the pavement as she stopped herself and turned around to see the skeleton snapping in her direction and charged. Smirking, Sara stood her ground, swinging the lantern beside her as she wound up ready for a hit.

She hoped Gauss got there fast enough for a quick jab for its back, her tail wagging excitedly at the prospect of a fight.

The more Gauss shot back at Nadia, the more Noah hated it. They both honestly deserved a good whack on the head. Who was going to do that though? Definitely not Noah.

Noah kept himself busy from his more depressing thoughts with his electrical generation and busying himself with Gauss’ wavelength. When Gauss spoke within his mind, he chuckled. ‘Yeah, I don’t like the plan either. Especially considerin’ I don’t see any catacomb entrances yet. I think she jumped the gun honestly. Either way, she tried. I think she was thinkin’ more ‘bout team cohesiveness than what we’re good at.’

As Sara and Eva distracted and smashed into the other skeleton, his eyes went alight with a plan, powering up his lightning. ‘There she goes.’ The staff crackled minutely, and there was a sudden uplifting emotion surging through him. He held a sadistic grin within that bo-staff, the grin of which could be seen off the reflection of the metallic bases of the staff.

He had been waiting to hit something.

Shattered their bones, these fiends of flame
these foes without souls, ignorant to pain
will kill with no remorse and feel no shame

They are a wave of death we must contain
beat them, break them, no force inhumane
shatter their bones, these fiends of flame

It matters not if they are forced or arcane
Nor where they seek to find free reign
kill with no remorse and feel no shame

Fleshless abominations of evil disdain
mindless killers we shan't entertain
shatter their bones, these fiends of flame

No longer human, nothing left to explain
This is a fight from which we can't refrain
kill with no remorse and feel no shame

These are the foes for which we train
evils the world cannot afford to sustain
shatter their bones, these fiends of flame
will kill with no remorse and feel no shame

The flames reflected in his bright eyes, glowing a nigh-golden hue in the warmth. It was not the pleasant warmth of a hearth or a family bonfire. Even with the mask on, the scorched air around him made the air dry and filled with harsh particulates that grated the skin. Yet still, his sharp eyes watched as events unfolded in front of him. His soul perception keen, watching each flare from Nadia and Sara, and noting how quickly they were using up their reserves. Those eyes of his saw precisely what he wanted to avoid, but he could not play each person as if a pawn on a board. This was not some game where he could create a perfectly calculated victory for.

The reality was, his continued inaction would only result in the other two expending more of their energy to make up for the lack of effort he put in. These skeletons did not, at least at first glance, seem such a difficult target that he could not be a welcome addition while keeping his stamina usage to a minimum. If the situation became more dire, it would be best that each of them have a fair amount left to fight as opposed to himself alone having plenty left to go on. In no situation did he see himself in his best condition better than the sum of himself, Sara, and Nadia, even if their synergy was not perfected.

He was prepared to join the fray sooner rather than later, and had been watching closely for an opening to do so. His wavelength coursed through him, energizing the cells inside him in a content amplification, waiting for the first second they needed to contract. This only grew greater as the spirits of Noah lifted, making that soul space in them more lively and allowing their energies to swirl and mix just that much more easily. The thrill of combat had an affect on both of them. Knowing he was ready to rush in at any time, Gauss even found himself growing bored of this short wait. Luckily, it would be just that: short.

Sara and her foray with the skeletons created the exact scenario he was waiting for, and he was primed like a black powder bullet to go. An explosion of speed followed him, a blur not unlike what Sara made herself to be. Slower, perhaps, but more efficient in his usage. Holding Noah in his right arm with him wrapped within the crevice between and laying on his shoulder, he kept himself sleek and angular for this burst of movement. Upon nearing his target, liftin his arm over and a quick bend of his elbow put Noah into a more combat oriented position, and grasped with his left hand, he was now ready for how he intended to combat this creature.

He jammed Noah through the ribcage of the skeleton, piercing through the back of the ribs then upwards at and angle just one set above from the front. With the skeleton literally skewered, Gauss slowed his momentum just slightly enough to slam the end of Noah into the ground, then his foot onto that end to create a lever he could pull on to lift the skeleton up, only to slam it back into the ground with no small amount of force, and attempt to hold it there at the range of his staff away from the flames for as long as he could.

"Sara, dear, would you be so kind as to smash this for me, please?" Gauss asked her, so politely that it almost read as sarcasm. Perhaps in part it was, but more so he was aware that she could smash it far faster than he could, and this position made doing so relatively safe and easy.

The witch’s steps swiftly led her back to the beach, where Rand was standing just before the treeline, ready to catch the heavy bag and the two small spider carcasses hastily tied up by the radio handset. It did not take long for her presence to be noticed. Only a few steps onto the beach to spur the shifting of the sands, behemoths leaving pits behind as they shuffled up, flinging sand like a wayward shovel found way into a snowbank. Powder burst forth and sprayed through the air at the group. The sound she initially misidentified as the sand itself- instead a shrieking, she supposed, a noise that curdled her bones like sour cheese.

Her lips parted to shout to the others, still engrossed in their work on the beach, but it was not her announcement to make. Her bag thumped to the ground silently; the orders were clear and she closed distance between the crustaceans that she innately knew were routed toward her. Spores began to drip from her hands; there was a flinging motion toward the closest assailant – one of the smallest, quickest crabs, that scrambled up on to solid soil and threatened her legs with its claws. The witch shook her hand violently, spraying spores forward across the ground and the small crab, fuzz floating through the air and melting into its soft shell.

Maria moved up toward the commotion, dolls forward and ready for combat, so Chanterelle did her best to enforce distance before herself and her groupmates. Raphael and Ark seemed to spend a moment congregating; the witch had little time to consider their strategy as she dodged one crab’s claw but the throw of Raphael caught her attention and led her feet to scuff against the hill. Still, they were effective: as Maria was covered by the boys and they beat back the smaller creatures Chanterelle dealt with three small crabs at the fight’s periphery.

But sand started to explode again, and she wrongfully assumed that there were more coming, scrambling up the hill with the aid of limb tethered to bough and brim. There was a cry of alarm, woefully silent, as Chanterelle attempted to make these fleeting creatures move onto solid ground. She was sure that they could perceive her just as easily as they could before; there was a prayer or three that she would keep their attention at all.
