Realistic or Modern Someone Wants Me Dead (Sleepy Sleuth, Allybanks00)

She hesitated for maybe half a second but took his hand and got out of the SUV.

"Breakfast is my favorite meal to go out for" she said to him trying to keep the conversation light. She stood slightly behind him as she waited for the waitress to seat them

The waitress led the two of them to an open booth with a window view. Dustin thanked her, and she mentioned it was nice of him to bring company for a change. It was clear he was a regular here. Until today, he had always eaten alone. The waitress left them with a couple of menus and a few minutes to decide on their order. Dustin settled into the booth and offered to let Cassandra sit beside him if she wished.

"Tell me something about yourself," he said, following her lead on the light conversation. "No home troubles, no Texas. Something pleasant, yes?"

She laughed slightly. "I've got nothin interesting about me Dustin." she said waving her hand to dismiss him.

But she sat for a moment. "You know this already but I was working as a nurse- I love my job... it's my favorite thing in the world actually." she began.

"When I was a kid I barrel raced horses and I did that til I was- oh shit, I dunno maybe 19 or 20." she said to him. "My favorite colors dark blue and I've always wanted to travel but i've only been in the states and I went to Italy and Greece once a couple years ago." She said to him. Small facts, but the truth about her, deeper than her shitty relationship and her crap home life. The real her.

"Horse racing, nursing, overseas trips," Dustin commented. "You are more interesting than you give yourself credit for, Cassandra. I've never been to nice places like Italy or Greece. Only to the Middle East for tours of duty, and a single trip to the Balkans for business."

He flagged the waitress over to order some coffee and the biggest breakfast platter the restaurant had. Once the waitress was gone again, Dustin continued.

"If you love your job so much, why not get a new one here in Boston?" he suggested.

She looked over at him and gave a shrug in return, taking a sip of her coffee.

"I don't know." she began. "I don't want him to find me somehow- I just.." she shrugged again. "It's just hard to think about, Id love to work again, but who's gonna hire someone who has to be ready to up and leave at any moment?" she asked him.

She had come to terms with the fact that she was on the run.
