The young woman sighed softly, looking over at the small calendar placed above her desk. It was the second day into the New Year - Spring 2, and things were slowing down from the celebrations that had taken place. It was ten in the morning, and she had yet to consume any coffee. She woke up a little later than planned, and was unable to make her usual cup of coffee at home. Things were mostly lax, and Seo Mcintyre knew that they would be until this afternoon. The paperwork she put off over the weekend looked unnerving as she stared over at the two small piles. One stack contained different registration forms she was supposed to organize and sort into the proper categories, while the other had numerous stock and produce shipment forms. They weren't due until the end of this week, however, it was always a pain to deal with. A job was a job, and she couldn't complain about it. After all, working this closely with the mayor was one of the accomplishments she was proud of, and hoped her father would be proud of as well. The village of Snowbrush had a respectable community, one she didn't want to let down.

With a determined look and one of her favorite pens in hand, Seo sat forward, about to get started when she stopped dead in her tracks. She slowly glanced over at the list of important events for this season, her eyes landing on Spring 4. With a dramatic gasp, she realized she needed to get into contact with Mayor Samson, for she'd forgotten to schedule an announcement for one of their resident's birthdays! William Burke had one coming up, and she needed permission to put it on the bulletin board in the middle of the village. This was one of the more clumsy mistakes on her part, but with the New Years festivity planning and the events actually taking place, it slipped her mind. After pulling her tan peacoat over her shoulders and securing her small bag, she got up and made her way towards the Mayor's office and knocked on the door.

Another morning in Snowbrush had crept its way across the horizon, bringing the brilliant bright sun with it, as it slowly chased the shadows away Samson awoke not so bright- but very early in the morning, he slipped on his loafers and changed out of his dress wear into a button-up red shirt and khaki pants. Walking into the kitchen he grabbed two eggs from the fresh carton he'd just bought the other day and cracked them into a pan to cook and dropped a slice of bread in the toaster before he took a long look out the window and smiled as the town of Snowbrush was lit up by the sun

"Good morning, Old Snowbrush." taking in a great deep breath of the morning air he returned to his bedroom and waited for his alarm to go off just so he could stop it the moment it rang, giving a deep chuckle and shaking his head at the relic of an alarm clock as he reset it "Not today, I still woke up before you!" He hardly needed the old thing, Samson had been waking up before his alarm clock for 23 years

after his breakfast was made he plated it and made his way to his office, humming a tune all the way there. When he arrived he sat the plate down on his desk before brewing a pot of black coffee in the old machine at the other end of the room and watched it tentatively as it bubbled, he wanted his breakfast to be complete before he ate it. The Mayor placed his steaming mug of coffee next to the eggs n toast and opened the window to grab an apple from the nearby tree and confidently placed it near the plate of food. Rubbing his hands together and rolling back his sleeves he picked up the toast and egg and took a big- Samson was interrupted by a knock at the door, he frowned slightly and put the egg n toast back down and walked to the door, opening it and giving a jolly welcome to his assistant, Seo

"Ahh... Good morning to you, Seo! You seem to have caught my while I was eating breakfast" the mayor confessed, "So, how are we doing this fine morning!" Samson opened the door widely for her to enter

Like always Argo came downstairs from his living space at the top floor of his general store, yawning to himself as his faithful dog Coach happily ran about outside the store picking up sticks and watching birds nest. As he unlocked the doors to the general store he flipped the "We're closed" sign over to "Come on in" and walked inside giving a quick whistle for Coach to follow suit.

Flicking on a lightswitch and illuminating the whole store he began to stock the shelves with the new products that had just rolled in last night. "Well Boy, I'm thinking we've got a pretty good day ahead of us... what do you think?" Coach answered this question with a happy "Bork!" and wagged his tail "Hah, Good dog."

Joshua had risen early before the sun came up, as was customary for many in the village. As per usual, he moved sluggishly through his room to get ready before finally going downstairs to prepare the morning goodies before opening the tavern. Every day there was a special treat Joshua prepared aside from what was regularly on the menu. He had decided on carrot cake squares the night before. While the ovens warmed up he took the time to get the various coffees and teas prepared for any early arrivals.

After tossing the squares in the oven, Joshua got his little decorating station ready. His favorite part of any good carrot cake was, predictably, the orange and green carrot frosting decoration. Thinking about the smiles his food would cause made Joshua himself smile a little. After an hour of cake making, decorating, and heating up all of the other breakfast items, Joshua waited patiently by the front door. The moment that tiny bit of sunshine hit his feet was when he opened his tavern. Just like clockwork, the rays kissed his feet and he unlocked the doors, leaving them open, nice and wide, so everyone would know they could start coming in.

Returning to the back, Joshua brought all of what he could to the front, putting the various cakes, sandwiches, and other treats in their proper display places. Taking a seat in his "working chair", Joshua leaned back and closed his eyes, quickly falling back asleep and napping. It was a regular sight to anyone who came to the tavern to see a napping Joshua behind the counter. A little bell rested on the counter with a small piece of paper that said "ring for service", for the sole purpose of waking him up whenever Aoko wasn't around to help.

Once the door opened, the young woman was greeted warmly by the much taller man. "Good morning, Mayor Samson." She greeted with a bow. "I'm so very sorry to interrupt you, sir, but I need to head to the bulletin board really quick." Seo chuckled nervously, not wanting to admit she'd forgotten to do something. It usually happened once in a blue moon, as Seo was a hard, dedicated assistant and loved helping out as much as she could. "I need to put up an announcement for an upcoming birthday." She knew the mayor was a kind-hearted soul, and hopefully would understand her little mistake. She peered over at his desk once a whiff of eggs and toast, wondering if she was interrupting his breakfast. Ah, man, that only made the situation a little worse on her part. She hadn't meant to just barge in like this - even so, she waited patiently for the mayor of Snowbrush to respond.

Seo adjusted the bag strapped over her chest, she realized she'd also forgotten to grab the announcement sheet. What was with her today? It usually wasn't like her to be so forgetful. Maybe it was because it was still the beginning of the week, or perhaps it was because her mind had been occupied on other things recently. She spent New Years alone this year, finding it difficult to want to make plans. Of course, usually she would go to the tavern and spend it with whoever was there for the night. A lot of good memories tended to happen on special events. Her train of thought was interrupted when she realized she was still standing before her boss. Hopefully he didn't notice her spacing off a little - man, she really needed to focus.

Aoko shuffled around in bed, enjoying her snoozing drowsiness. What time was it? 7:30? Ah, plenty of time to get the day started comfortably. Swinging the bedsheets across the bed, she slowly got up, stretching a little before sliding her feet into her fuzzy snowflake-print slippers. After changing from her jammies to her work outfit - a blue skirt with attached suspenders, an off white shirt, a pair of dark tights, blue ballerina shoes, her favourite watch and her habitual, slightly messy ponytail on the side - she washed her face and put on a cute pair of earrings. She made her way towards the kitchen to whip up something light to eat; a heavy breakfast made her sleepy around noon, and if rush hour were to strike at lunch, she would risk making mistakes and disturbing the service flow... And that is just unacceptable. Truly! But on her days off, the girl enjoyed nothing more than brunching with friends, chatting for hours on end, with or without (but really, preferably with) mimosas on hand.

As she grabbed the milk to put in her cereal, she started a small pot of coffee and rinsed her reusable mug, setting it aside by the coffee machine. On the mug, one could read:

"Coffee Diem: Seize The Drink."

She tossed a few ice cubes at the bottom of the mug and poured some milk over them. She brought out honey and crushed almonds, added both to her cereal and savoured the sweet, tasty mix of ingredients. Regardless of the fact that she was alone, she made several "mmm" noises throughout her breakfast. She added a little more honey because you know, it's good for you, then a little more cereal to finish the milk, then a little more milk to finish the cereal... Woops.

"Great job Aoko," she thought. "I wonder who's gonna get drowsy first between Joshua and I today."

A beeping sound went off: coffee was ready. Aoko rinsed her cereal bowl, poured the coffee in her mug, covered it up and quickly got ready to leave. Purse? Check. Book? Check. Keys? Yes... Phone? Yup. Coffee? Oh yeah!

And off she went. She was a fast walker, and the tavern was barely 15 minutes away on foot.

It was generally Joshua who opened up the tavern, but Aoko sometimes replaced him whenever he needed to take a break for whatever reason. For instance, last winter when he caught a cold, she took care of opening the tavern and ran it for the weekend into the following week while he recovered, bringing him soup and tea daily. He was so thankful for her help that he made her a strawberry and rhubarb pie- one of her childhood comfort foods. She recalled nearly shedding a tear when she took the first bite; it should be illegal to cook so well! And she remembered telling him exactly that. "If that were the case though, it would be the only time I'd gladly be a criminal!" she said as she let out a generous laugh.

Aoko was still reminiscing when she arrived at the tavern's entrance. The smell of carrot cake immediately alerted her. "Oh my Goddess! Carrot cake today?! Awesome," she muttered. It was another one of her favourites, and even though everything Joshua made was delicious, his carrot cake was certainly something else.

Each morning was therefore a surprise for her senses, and Aoko found that very comforting. Joshua and his tavern were so welcoming and heartwarming to her now. After all those years, Aoko developed nothing but affection for Snowbrush Village. People were kind, the scenery was beautiful, and life was good. She couldn't be more thankful for listening to her gut feeling and making the leap towards what first seemed like a risky move at best, and a stupid one at worst.

By the time she arrived at the tavern, Joshua usually had enough time for one of his naps. The bell was for customers to use, not for her. She found it too harsh of a sound so early in the day, too. It reminded her of the tiny, steamy restaurant kitchens she managed to escape: she had the same type of bell to call upon servers to come and pick up their plates under the heaters. Blech. Shoving the thought aside, she put her belongings at the end of one of the tavern's counters.

So as usual, Joshua was dozing off in his chair and, as usual, Aoko quietly walked up to him, caressing his arm gently. "Josh... Joshua, wake up... Good morning," she said, leaning her head over slightly to catch his gaze when he'd open his eyes.

Joshua grumbled in his sleep, Aoko's caressing making him only half wake up. "Five more minutes..." After his mumbling, the man's eyes opened partially before he realized Aoko was the one waking him up. More awake now, Joshua blinked twice, staring at the woman with his all too familiar 'glare'. "Oh, good morning Aoko." He got up from his chair, towering over his petite employee while he stretched and yawned. "I made some carrot cake squares if you want a few."

Joshua was known for his 'glaring', but at this point, it was just accepted that that's how his face was. When Joshua first moved to Snowbrush he got into plenty of trouble for giving customers mean looks. But eventually, everyone learned he was hardly ever in a bad mood and the best way to find out how he felt was to simply ask him.

"I wasn't expecting you to come here so early. There isn't really anything to do. Unless you wanna run an errand for me and get some more carrots from Aurora? I used the last of ours making the cake mix for today." He looked down at her with his hands on his hips. "Or, you could help me by cleaning the smaller utensils and glasses. The dishwasher isn't working properly, and you know I'm too big to reach some of the smaller spots."

As well as Joshua ran things around the tavern, it was an unspoken understanding that without Aoko things wouldn't be as polished as they are. The man's size was only rivaled by the mayor's due to the mayor's past as a football player, but he still stood tallest in the village, making it difficult for Joshua to clean properly in the tighter spaces of the tavern. Aoko was a definite godsend when she came around to Snowbrush. Before her, it was commonplace to see Joshua standing or laying down at weird angles to reach or clean things in small spaces.

Like most days, William was awake in time to watch the sun peak over the horizon while rubbing the sleep out of his eyes. It had been many years since the ex-adventurer experienced a Snowbrush spring and he was content to take a more languid approach to the morning. Had he not scorched his breakfast and smoked out the kitchen yet again it would have been a rather relaxing start to the day. When the smoke cleared all that remained was two pans full of culinary crimes against man. At least the toast came out uncharred, but that might be because he forgot that toast isn’t toast until put in a toaster. A minor success in comparison to the stovetop disgrace. Progress? Maybe! So for breakfast today there was bacon that looked like charcoal, eggs that are best left undescribed and two slices of disappointment. A perfectly balanced meal.

At least the front porch offered a tranquil place to suffer his own cooking. With winter fading so too did the bitter chills with it, but with spring still in its early stage a nip lingered in the morning air. It almost was enough to distract him from the abomination sitting on his plate.

As the kitchen aired out from another culinary disaster and with a still rumbling stomach William began his chores. First, always first, he checked on his flock which was a grand total of eleven happy birds. There’s the trio of ducks that for whatever reason moved in and the eight chickens that are normally his main source of entertainment. As usual the feathered gang was eager to leave the coop and start their extremely busy days. Such hard workers. From there, and with a few of the more friendly chickens following, he inspected the vegetable patch and looked over the loyal scarecrow guardians.

From a bystander’s point of view he went about his business like usual, but William occasionally lapsed out of focus. For whatever reason the familiar melancholy that had lingered in his shadow since returning home decided to be a nuisance. So much had changed in his time away. Kids were grown up, new faces had joined the village while some old ones departed. It was, still is, a lot for him to take in even half a year later. However he never let himself linger in this thinking. He couldn’t allow the past to dictate his life any longer and he had far too many things left to do.

Such tasks were why William eventually made his way into the village. During the pleasant stroll he noticed a few early wildflowers beginning to make their yearly appearance. It was too early for the fields of color that would soon beautify Snowbrush but they still added their charm to his day.

Snowbrush was already stirring with life by the time William made it to the town square. The tavern, which happened to be his primary source of anything edible, was emitting an enticing scent that served only to remind him of today’s failure. For a moment he considered getting a meal that didn’t taste like if awful and depression had a lovechild but just barely willed himself to wait until lunch. He needed to make a stop at the mayor’s place to check if any silly paperwork needed to be filled out for a new barn. Would there be any? Probably. There always is and William didn’t even try to stop himself from groaning at this fact. Rubbing the bridge of his nose he immediately decided that he was not in the mood to fill out forms right now. So that left his checklist of goods that could hopefully be bought without being lured into Argo’s salesman trickery.

Entering the store it seemed William was the only customer. A little concerning since that meant the shop’s owner could focus all his efforts into doing what he does best. Even still William offered a friendly, for his gruff standards, “Hello. How's it going?” to both Argo and Coach before beginning his shopping.

Argo was about to finish stocking the shelves when he heard the bell above the front door chime and Coach happily walking up to the customer to greet them with a wagging tail that shot to and fro all the while. Standing up in stretching his back slightly Argo turned around with a bright smile and a slight sigh, the customer was none other than William, one of the local farms and a star patron of his general store, the sight of the man who truly lived off the land was a welcome sight.

"Morning Will, how are those chickens treating ya?" He gave a boisterous yet gravely laugh to his joke and shook his head as if to dismiss the thought entirely, gesturing to the shelves behind him he turned away from William slightly "I was just about finished with stocking the shelves for this week when you came in, the only thing left was..." and as if on queue Coach slowly walked up to Argo holding up a bag of "Neutra Mix! Animal feed" and dropped it at the man's feet.

Looking down and hoisting it up into his hands the salesman looked the bag up and down as if he were reading its label for the first time. "Ahh, that's right. This new animal feed just shipped in, It's got twice as much feed for half the price and a recent study showed that it was also twice as healthy as some of the other leading brands, hell- I gave a sample of it to Coach and he was howling for more, ain't that right boy?" The old dog gave a bellowing howl and wagged it's tail, spinning around in a circle before sitting at Argo's side and looking up at William expectantly. Even the shopkeep's dog seemed to be a trained salesman.

Keeping the bag under one arm he looked back to William with a smile "So, I'm guessing you're here for more than a polite visit to the shopkeeper and his dog right? What can I get for ya?" He slid behind the counter and leaned forward on one arm and Coach lumbered over to a nice sunny patch by the window and laid down

After his assistant apologized for barging in on his breakfast which was a comment he shook his head at and gestured for her to walk inside, sidestepping to move his large frame out of the doorway.
After a bit of waiting, he raised an eyebrow at Seo as she seemed to be lost in thought about something, clearing his throat he tapped her shoulder softly and gestured inside again

"Here, why not join me for a cup of coffee before we both start the long day of work off proper," he said as he walked across the wooden board flooring of the entryway to the office, the sound of his loafers thumping and creaking across the floor as he took long strides across the room as he launched headfirst into telling another story about his father to Seo. "You see Seo, when I was a boy, growing up on the family farm with my two brothers and father we had two fields of corn and wheat growing for miles that we all attended too as a group, now this, of course, was before we had any kind of these new machines for tilling soil and watering crop, we did it by hand and horse plow, you can see how that would make problems along the way, like the one year we found a nest of birds living near one of the intended growing patches of-" Samson trailed off into a whole other story about the time his family raised a nest of finches to maturity. all the while he put on another pot of coffee for Seo only stopping briefly to ask "Oh- Decaf or Caf?" and when that query was briefly answered he relapsed back to the story he was told beforehand.

Seo had become all too familiar with this behavior from Mr. Whitman. It seemed every time he needed to give a reason behind an action he'd drone on about his life growing up on a farm in whatever prehistoric period the old mayor was born in, but they always did have a moral behind them and Samson derived great joy from his assistant listening all the way through. "----So my father Garron, who my middle name is attributed to you should note, finally had enough of me and my brothers dreary around and had us always eat a protein-packed breakfast in the morning! And would even let us try some of his coffee, which tasted like boiled dirt- HAR HAR HAR HO! How horrid to remember the taste!"

He nearly spilled the coffee as he slapped his knee and hysterics to the memory of the cruel brew his late father would drink. whipping a tear from his eye he took a deep breath and finished pouring the coffee and gave it to Seo "The point, of course, being this: If you don't start your day off with something good and energetic, you won't get anything good done and you'll fail entirely to be energetic! So give yourself a boost of energy and drink up Seo, and I promise my coffee is three-hundred times better than my father's Ho ho ho! Oh- and feel free to use the bulletin board whenever you need!" and with that all out of the way he sat back and began to eat his now slightly cold breakfast.

Aoko giggled. Five more minutes. In spite of his size, Joshua sounded like a child at times. She couldn't help but find that to be rather endearing. "Hey there, sleepyhead." His usual seemingly moody expression slowly settled on his face, and the girl knew he was truly awake then.

"Oooh, don't mind if I do! I mean, I did just have breakfast, but mom always said it's okay to eat something not as healthy if you have something that's actually good for you first...! So that means I'm in the clear, right? Cereal has lots of fiber and stuff!" Her convenient 'deduction' arrived at the same time as she did in front of the pastry display. "Beautiful as always! Great job! Now it's time to do my part... Hehehe! Quality check!"

She fixed herself a plate with two (!) pieces of carrot cake, sat down with her now iced coffee; again, audible mmm's and softly spoken wow's. "I guess I am early, but I didn't feel like going back to sleep, I rested up well enough. It was a good night, really." In between two bites, she continues: "Sure thing, I think I'll go see Aurora first - she's been up for a while already, if I know my people. And when I get back I can get started on utensils and whatever else, no problem! Do you want to take a minute to check if we need anything else while I'm out there?"

The cool morning breeze rushed through the open window, catching the airy, pale curtains and pushing them towards the ceiling. Sage turned in her sleep, pulling blankets over her ears to block the pre-dawn chirps from the birds. The curtains flew again, and she finally knocked the covers away with her legs. A yawn, a sigh and a stretch later, she was walking barefoot downstairs, just quietly enough not to wake her slumbering nephew.

She poured water and coffee into her small machine, but would wait to have her one cup with Liam. It was a small morning ritual, generally followed by breakfast at the tavern - if they weren't running behind. Sage's eyes flicked towards the clock as she sank into a huge chair next to the currently empty fireplace. Some days in spring were still cold enough for a fire, but she was seldom home during the day and felt no need to waste the wood. She pulled her legs into her chest and took a few deep breaths.

As she was mentally going through the day's priorities, she heard soft footsteps upstairs and the opening of a door. Liam rubbed his eyes and stumbled in the bathroom, turning on the shower and letting it steam for a few minutes before bathing briskly. It was all it took to wake him, but he still looked forward to coffee with his aunt. He could hear the old pot rumbling even from here. After combing through his unkempt blonde tangles and dressing, he bounded down the stairs.

Sage flinched, preparing herself for a good morning hug.

"It's been a year, Aunt Sage, you gotta stop acting like hugs are poison."

She scowled, laughed and gave Liam a gentle shove, "You're right. At least you shower," she said as she poured coffee into two tin mugs. After taking a pull of hers, she let herself grin and sat down at their small wooden table, "We'll make our regular rounds today. No one's called in for help, but if I know this town, by the time we show up, something will have broken-" sip, sip, sip, "-oh and today is the doctor's office, if you can take care of that after breakfast?"

Liam bit back a smile

Sage narrowed her eyes, "And stop flirting with Dr. Nilsson, you're making her uncomfortable. Why can't you make friends with Elias? He's your age."

He shrugged and pushed his mug around the table for a minute, "I don't think he likes me much..."

"Well, either way, stay out of the doctor's hair. After you're done with the office, check the general store, with all the traffic, Argo may want another clean. Then if the day goes well, we'll go see Aurora or William..." she trailed off, an unusual smile on her lips before she shook her head and stood, "I'd like some fresh tomatoes."

"What about eggs?" Liam groaned with a pout.

"You and eggs, good god boy," she laughed under her breath, rinsed her mug and went to get ready for the day.

They left the house unlocked, as did everyone in Snowbrush. Sage's family home was right on the edge of town, close enough to answer any calls in the middle of the night but far enough that no one could see in her windows. Her parents were not private people, they shared their life and home with the whole village. Sage admired them for that, but found she wasn't the same, no matter how hard she tried.

It took ten minutes before they pushed open the tavern door. Immediately, Liam put an arm in front of his aunt, "You can't have cake for breakfast," he said, uncharacteristically serious. He led her to the bar, where she sulkily sat down and frowned. Liam gave out his standard, boisterous laugh, "You're a child, disguised as a very mean woman," his eyes glinted as they bounced around the tavern, landing on Aoko. He gave her a small smile, then waited for them to finish speaking. A little disappointment hit when he heard the server was off to run errands.

"Joshuaa," Sage whined, putting both her elbows on the counter and cradling her face in her hands, "I'm...so...hungry."

William should have been prepared for his feathered friends to be used against him. He really should have. Argo’s indeed a crafty man, but for him to start the attack with the poultry blitzkrieg tactic…now that’s just devious. Incredibly effective, but devious. To make it worse the shopkeeper astutely refused the chance for recovery and continued his advance. Had Argo not done this he would have received a rather thorough update on the flock. Frankly that was William’s only way to get back at Argo for always selling him things he didn’t know he needed. Talking nonstop about his birds was also his way of buying time for another victi-villager to walk in and sacrifice themselves for him. Was denying him that just another part of the master plan? He eyed the clever blonde with scarcely concealed suspicion.

Probably.

Putting the counter-attack planning on pause William looked down at the four legged co-owner of the store. Wagging tail, massive frame, puppy eyes and all. Suddenly remembering his manners the farmer slightly leaned over to pat the old man just to fall into Coach’s trap. With fingers mere inches away the cunning Coach turned and wandered off leaving behind a beaten farmer. Like that wasn’t enough abuse, Argo and Coach then ruthlessly unveiled their plan. As the storekeeper lifted the bag with a very happy chicken staring directly at him, Will’s eyes widened ever so slightly as the realization kicked in. From the moment Argo mentioned the birds, no, from the moment he stepped through those doors, he was getting played like a fiddle. Again!

As Argo effortlessly flexed his salesmanship and Coach chimed in with far too perfect timing William could only desperately fortify himself. He couldn’t be beaten like this. It was about pride now! Forming a visage of total impassiveness he let the pair finish their routine. He was confident he could still win this as Argo made his way behind the counter. In his mind he rehearsed what he was going to tell the shopkeeper as he too walked to the counter.

Not this time Argo! Nuh-uh. Not happening. No way! Not. To. DAY!

“How much is the bag?” Utter defeat. Glancing at the oh so suddenly tired Coach then back at the man probably hiding a smug grin, a frowning William could only say, “Using the dog is cheating.”

Listening to Mayor Samson's stories were always interesting. She remembered a time where she was still fairly new here, and would put off doing any work for hours on end as Samson would go on. She would be much too shy or intimidated to say anything to get him back on track or to excuse herself. After being here for years now, she knew how to handle him well. She knew his schedule (memorized it by heart, really), what he liked talking about the most, and even the type of music he preferred. Seo wouldn't have changed anything about her job for the world. She smiled softly when he questioned her preference. "Caffeinated please-!"

She took a sip of her coffee, blowing on it slightly so it wouldn't burn her tongue. "Thank you so much! I really needed this." The coffee had both a rich smell and taste to it, and she was grateful for this little life-saver.

"That is wonderful information, sir, I'm always happy to hear about it." Seo praised him, finding it meaningful and endearing that he spoke so openly and positively of his family the way he did. Though he could get off track, his messages always had a purpose and each time Seo would store it in her memory for use in the future. She would never admit this to anybody, but she viewed him as a father figure in her life. She was a little more on the rebellious side before she was able to start working here. Through drinking and being reckless with herself, the entire village knew she was having a hard time with adjusting to life after her father's passing. Samson, along with the majority of the community, were very supportive and encouraging. And now here she was, doing her best to return the support to the people who helped her out.

Seo nodded at his final comment, glancing out of the window before her. Snowbrush was a lovely place, and she was excited on being out and about for a little bit. Perhaps she would be able to run into someone! "I'll be back in a bit, Mayor Samson. Thank you again!" Once they finished parting ways, she sent him a little wave and was on her way.

The young woman walked along the sidewalk, enjoying the slight breeze. Mornings here were always wonderful for her (except when she was hungover), and greeting some of the villagers was always a mood-brightener. The bulletin board was just a couple minutes away and around the corner, and she wondered if anyone posted anything new.

Joshua gave a little chuckle at Aoko's rationalization. He knew she just wanted to have an excuse to eat carrot cake. "Glad you like it," he said in response her to audible sounds of approval, "I don't need you to get anything else, I can do it." He reassured her, noticing Sage and Liam coming in. The truth was, he didn't trust Aoko to not fall for Argo's tricks. The man was a salesman, and Joshua was more than familiar with his kind. He was always the one to go haggle with the shopkeep whenever something was needed. From what Joshua could tell, he was one of the few people immune to Argo's schemes and charms. It was endearing to him though, to see his fellow villagers be so trusting. Even after twelve years, seeing it made him feel good every time. Sometimes it even amused him to see Argo get someone to buy something "they didn't know they needed", as Argo liked to put it.

Turning his attention to Sage and Liam, Joshua walked over to them. "Morning you two." The very bland greeting was paired with his normal expression of boredom. "Hungry you say? Well, I have a very special surprise for you," he addressed Sage first before turning to look at Liam, "and for you as well. It'll be a wait." Joshua went off to the back to get cooking, giving Aoko a wave before vanishing behind the swinging door. He always told people it would be a wait, even to those who came every day. It was a habit he had to pick up after a few too many unhappy tourists voiced their disapproval over the length of time it took for Joshua to cook. He didn't believe in frozen foods, with a few culinary exceptions, and with that belief came the added workload of making everything to order.

After fifteen minutes, Joshua returned to the bar with a plate stacked with blueberry, strawberry, and banana pancakes, with maple syrup and whipped cream on top in one hand. In his other hand was a plate of scrambled eggs with regular pancakes. He set the plates down in front of the two, "you didn't say anything about her not being allowed pancake." It was a personal victory for Joshua to satisfy Sage's sweet tooth against Liam's wishes. "By the way, if you're not too busy, I need my dishwasher looked at. I'll let you and Liam eat for free all day today if you can get it done before noon." The last thing Joshua wanted was to be hit with customers while his dishwasher was down. He was fast enough to compensate, he just didn't like having to go faster than walking speed unless absolutely necessary.

Argo smirked a bit as William brought up the bag of animal feed to and asked how much it would cost for the bag and the store owner obliged by punching some numbers into the register and deducting Willaim's "Loyal Patron" discount from the price. No matter how often Argo could get his customers into buying oh so many things they didn't know they needed he always wanted their trust in his wares to be strong and their faith in his ability to run a fair business to be even stronger, he gave free warranties on everything he sold, would go out to help repair something if it broke down and would even host raffles to win free things from the shop. All in all, he tried to keep his loyal customers happy and the loyalty discount was just one of the many things that helped him achieve that goal.

Laughing to the comment about Coach he shook his head "Old dog's gotta work here too y'know, He earns his treats, right boy?" He tossed the dog a bone from somewhere behind the counter and Coach happily caught it and gnawed down in his sunny spot "Say and look at that, next bag of animal feed ya buy will be free of charge, lucky day for you Wil."

After payment was finally settled and done Argo straighten back up and rolled his neck a few times and waved to a passing Seo before he raised an eyebrow to the farmer "So, that marshy spot seems like it could be pretty shaky ground for putting farm buildings, everything running smoothly?" the charm of a businessman had disappeared and now his voice was simply one of a concerned neighbor looking out for his fellow man, it was always strange to hear the shift at first but it was simply just the way Argo worked, work endeavors called for his work voice and those not related top work didn't.

Samson smiled brightly after finishing his little chat with Seo and waved as his assistant left the office. He adored these morning conversations with her, it always made him feel happy to bring a guiding hand to someone's life and he'd managed to fill that roll many a time for Seo in the past couple years her change into the young woman she was today was truly inspiring to see and nearly brought a tear to the old man's eye

As Seo made her wait out of the door he said one last thing "Take care dear! oh, and while you're out to the bulletin board remember to mark the calendar for the Spring Festival, we want everyone to be prepared for it don't we?" and as the door closed he took a deep breath of the morning air and got to work at his desk- after he finished breakfast of course. Let's see... there were some papers William had yet to sign with him, the manual for that new-fangled coffee machine Argo had sold him, a design for a new sign that he wanted to show to Aoko and Joshua, and finally some blueprints for...? He quickly stashed those in his desk's lockbox, he'd nearly spoiled the little surprise schemes he had been working on the night prior, but it'd be some time till those were useful.

For now, Samson signed the regular daily paperwork, looked over boring tax files and bills. wrote up a letter to his brothers in the city and nearly spilled coffee everywhere trying to use the new machine that he just couldn't get to work, he'd ask Seo for a hand when she came back. So he decided to take a walk of his own, picking up his watering can and walking outside he began to water the patches of flowers and bushes that lined the town's sidewalks and paths so they could grow to be fragrant and beautiful

Humming to himself as he watered the plants he contemplated how much the town would grow and change this coming year, standing straight he overlooked the wonderful little town of Snowbrush, watching as her denies went about their business all playing their roles to keep her the special way she was. taking it all in a moment he sighed happily "I do wonder what all these young happy folks will get themselves into this year, ho ho ho! I'm sure it'll make for great stories to tell the young ones who come after them!" and with that, he returned to his little contribution to Snowbrush of watering the plants.

She barely felt tired anymore, it was mainly a blur added to her daily turmoil that was life. Despite seeping happiness from her very pores when in the presence of others, Aurora was definitely finding life just a little stressful at the moment. Pushing her bicycle home was easier than riding with tears in her eyes, she'd already fallen off down a banking once and that was one too many times! At least she wouldn't have to tend to her crops when she got back, all that was done from the crack of dawn- It was a monotonous journey now. Wake up, work, be happy, eat then sleep-- Repeat. Every single day. She sighed dismissively, stopping just to wipe her eyes against the crook of her arm. It would be any day now, any day when the phone call would come that her grandfather passed. With a brief look to the sky, Aurora smiled helplessly. At least her grandmother would have her love back.

Her journey back was quite short considering her bumps and one flat wheel. Some tape should do the trick when she got home, hopefully...right? Who knew. She trudged on, pushing harder than before to get the bike rolling steadily. Just before entering, she stopped; "Okay!" Aurora mumbled to herself and inhaled deeply. She held that breath for a few seconds, her eyes stuck to the gravel beneath her dirty shoes. Finally, she exhaled and plastered a stupid grin upon her fair face; her lips curling and keeping it there to emphasise a bright, cheery, person. "Okay." Her words mimicked from earlier, a little easier this time.
Going back to her farm would only end up in her curled on her sofa, throw covering her body and her tissue box empty from a downpour in tears. She really needed to redecorate the farm house; remove her grandparents touches and give herself a chance to move on. Tomorrow...Maybe? Then again, there was always a tomorrow.

If anyone asked, her life was peachy- She was happy and content and her grandfather was just in a care home; sipping away on scotch and reading the daily while fussing over sudoku on the last pages. She stopped short of the bulletin board, glancing it over for anything new that may have sprung up in the last day or so-- Nothing really. She really ought to post up a pamphlet for free flowers; She was overrun at this point with thriving flora in her greenhouse. Aurora glanced down at her bike once more; Eyeing up it's chipped white paint and mangled wire basket. The back wheel also flopped about lazily and she came to the realisation that maybe a help sign would be more suited for her at this point. She sighed-- For the twentieth time and turned to head through town; only stopping once more as a familiar face came into view.

"Oh! Saaaaay---Ohhh!" Aurora called out, absently dropping her bike to wave with both hands. Big mistake. The bike wobbled in a sad state before falling ever-so-not-elegantly onto her; pushing her sideways just a little and catching her leg with the mangled wire; ripping right through her favourite pair of overalls. Her happy smile twitched, her lips dragging into a pursed grimace as her cheeks puffed in absolute annoyance. Stupid.Bloody.Thing. Aurora turned to the sorry state of her bike and drew her foot back; launching a poor attempt of an attack on the bike frame- Only to begin hopping about in an attempt to soothe the pain that shot right through her. Could anything else possible happen to her today to sour her mood more? She probably looked a right idiot in front of Seo, something she possibly would be embarrassed about for time to come.

Sage's eyebrows raised in delight, and Liam cast a doubtful glance.

“It'll be a wait.”

She gave out a mock groan, but smiled once he disappeared. Rubbing her hands together, she tried to imagine what kind of special surprise would come out that door. People should really be glad she had such a craving for sweets – it was the only thing that kept her nice. Inside, she was constantly practical. Always planning, always preparing, always ready for whatever next disaster waited her. When she ate cake, she didn't think.

After the short wait, Joshua returned with a plate full of heaven. With eyes open in wonder, she slowly pulled the plate towards her. When she looked up at her savior, she gave him a solemn nod, “Sir, you've surely outdone yourself this time. Considered the dishwasher fixed,” and after delicately taking one flavorful bite of each pancake, she devoured the rest in a atrocious fashion. Liam stared at her in horror.

“Look what you've done,” he rolled his eyes back into skull and started to eat.

“I'll get that dishwasher done right away,” Sage finally spoke, taking her first breath in five minutes. She licked the remaining fruit and cream from her fork and pushed her plate away once she'd stacked her napkins and silverware on it, “Thank you for that... dessert-” she gave Liam a twinkling look, “-Liam, you've got the doctor's office, right? I'll meet you back here at noon for lunch.”

He nodded, and Sage stood, letting out the tiniest of burps and grabbing her tool bag. The sugar was kicking in, and this could very well be the last bit of chipper Sage for the day, “You know what's wrong with it, or can I just kick things around back there?” She asked Joshua with a grin.

Well, he lost this battle and the losing streak was continuing into the new year, but that doesn’t mean William was going to be a sore loser about it. For one, that would ruin the fun, and two, he had been around long enough to learn that Argo was more than just a clever salesman. So his wallet occasionally being lightened was always a worthwhile trade for the not so normal experience. However! One day, one day William will have his vengeance. You can’t win forever Argo!

While Coach gnawed on his reward and the shopkeeper mentioned the freebie, William couldn’t help but question if that was yet another part of Argo’s thirty step plan. Then, as he was paying for the goods, he wondered if this had been Argo’s goal all along. Such levels of benevolent foresight didn’t seem possible…unless the shopkeeper is actually some magic forest spirit that felt like playing pretend in Snowbrush. Or it’s just one big coincidence and William’s imagination has gone wild in his advancing age. Certainly possible. Too much time talking to chickens maybe.

Before William could question his sanity more than usual he was brought back into reality by the storekeeper. It took a second for his mind to come out of its very deep and totally insightful contemplation to process the question. When it did he answered very dryly, “Stilts.” The odd reply was paired with an equally mysterious smile and it seemed he was content to leave it at that before finally expanding on it, “They help with the stability and keep the water out. Well…” he paused and knocked on the counter a couple times for good measure, “unless another big one comes through. Nothing is high enough to avoid a flood like that. That’s why Boss decided to keep a canoe tied to the house.”

The last part was a bit misleading. There is a canoe, though not the original, and William’s dad did eventually decide to keep it there but it definitely wasn’t his idea. That honor goes to a much younger and far more…spirited Will who was thinking only about how much fun rafting in a storm would be rather than safety. Luckily nobody who was around for the story's origin was present. If they were somebody would undoubtedly mention how a preteen William strained his soul dragging a hollowed log through town. Having been so painstakingly specific about the perfect log William never even considered picking something closer to home. Thanks to that miscalculation, most of the town got a front row seat to a stubborn boy doing his best but making very little progress. It was equal parts admirable and silly, a fine summary of his youth actually. In the end William allowed some others to assist in bringing the crudely “built” canoe home. Not that he needed their help! They just kept asking so he finally decided to make their day.

Seo was genuinely surprised to hear her name being called out. The woman turned around with a curious expression on her face, immediately spotting Aurora on her bike. Aurora was the lovely farmer who focused on fruits and vegetables. It was such a generous job one could have - especially with the amount of produce that usually comes in. She also provided the most beautiful flowers she'd ever seen. The wreathes and bouquets that she'd seen for festivals and other events in the village were also very beautiful. The work Aurora did worked hand in hand with her personality. Fun loving, happy and a true hard-worker. Seo felt lucky to even know this woman, and often aspired to be like her and many others here in Snowbrush. That was one of the best things about living here - the people. Everyone was unique and amazing in their own way, and Seo couldn't be more appreciative of that.

Her mouth opened as she was about to say something, but watched as the other woman's bike fell on top of her. It looked like it hurt quite a bit. "Oh, my gosh! Are you okay? How old is that bike? Ah- never mind that, let me help you-!" Seo rambled on, her voice sounding a bit frantic. She set her coffee on the ground, and rushed to Aurora's side. She wrapped her hands around the handles of the bike, and did her best to pull it off without hurting Aurora even more. It looked like a hard fall, and with all the work Aurora did, it probably hurt her a lot worse than it normally would to others. It took the mayor's assistant a second to realize that Aurora's legs were tangled with the wire. "I didn't realize- I'm sorry, let me see if I have something that could get you untangled.." Seo looked through her bag, becoming a little overly worried about the situation.

While she was doing so, Aurora had already gotten up, and was completely out of the mess. She adjusted her bag, and . "Oh, geez. Are you alright, now? Do you need anything?" She was standing a little closer to Aurora now, looking over her to see if there were any other small injuries like cuts.

A soft melody chimed through Violet's alarm clock by her bed: Vivaldi's Spring concerto. Every year she looked forward to the moment when she would switch from Winter to Spring, if only for the moment when she'd sync each concerto in accordance with the times of the year in Snowbrush. She was a bit of a nerd like that - in fact, she was very much one - and often found herself too embarrassed to admit it.

She favoured the Winter and Spring seasons, along with their respective concertos. They both reflected how Violet felt about these periods of the year. The Winter concerto emanated an image of a strong, cold wind, nearly white from whipping snowflakes down onto the earth during a storm. There was some sort of melancholy, showing through certain notes, that spoke to Violet as well. It sometimes made her feel like she was lonely, and other times like she was content with it; sitting near her fireplace with a book, bundled up in her grandmother's multicoloured crocheted blanket, with only the fire's crackling making itself heard. Very often, that would be all she needed. Although last Winter, the thoughts of loneliness had been growing ever more present... And harder to shake off.

But today, Spring is here: certainly the most joyful of the four songs, and the most colourful season! Violet woke up with a smile, ready to start the day. As she was sitting up to get out of bed, she heard a familiar rustling of leaves coming from her bedroom window.

Sure enough, from that window came Tio, Violet's pet squirrel. It practically never skipped a morning greeting, and Violet assumed the alarm clock's music must have been what gave it a cue to come in. Tio hopped on the bed and quickly made its way up to greet her in its usual way: circling her neck a couple times with a small squeak, and then sitting on the blankets until she got up. Even if Tio was almost always around, Violet knew better than to keep it caged, or held inside the house. She usually only had to leave a window open, and it'd show up to play or join her for most of the day at the library. She took a few minutes to pet it before getting up. "Good morning Tio, good morning, yes hiii~" she cooed as Tio climbed on her shoulder to follow her during her morning routine.

She got dressed in her favourite white blouse and pleated skirt in hues of green, a pair of dark tights along with her shiny black short-heeled shoes. She took a small jacket (in case the air was too cool outside), her purse and handbag on her way out of the house, Tio in tow. She took her bike, stuffed her belongings in the basket behind her seat, and started pedaling. Tio hung out in one of her handbag's pockets as Violet made her way towards the library.

It was a short enough trip but somewhere along the road, from a distance, Violet noticed two figures who looked like Seo and Aurora. She pulled the brakes on her bike gradually to slow down and stop in front of the girls. "G-good morning Seo, Aurora," she stuttered with a quick bow. Her eyes wandered onto Aurora's bike and immediately she felt a sting in her heart. How did the farmer manage to get around on this old bike for this long? Seemed like it was on its last stretch, too. Violet thought to herself that she would try and find a way to help, but decided to keep quiet about it. If she wasn't sure she could hold her promise, the girl always preferred to avoid the discussion entirely. She wouldn't be able to bear the sadness and shame of letting anyone down, especially someone as sweet as Aurora.

"I-is everything alright?" Tio suddenly hopped out of the handbag and approached Aurora, standing straight on its little furry feet. It slowly got closer, tentatively starting to crawl on her arm. Violet giggled. "I think Tio is checking up on you in his own way."

Finally resting her foot back on the ground, Aurora sighed and glanced briefly to the sky, blinking ferociously to hold back the dam of tears that were threatening to break. She dared not look at anyone, even the slightest bit of eye contact would’ve had her blubbering all over the path. A couple breaths had her calming down and soon, after another blink for good measure, Aurora glanced down at her bike.

“I’m okay, I’m okay!” She waved her hands about, completely embarrassed she had been caught in a little stunt such as this. “My grandfather made it...” She began, kicking at the ground with her good foot. “It belonged to my grandmother so...Pretty old?” She laughed briefly, rubbing the back of her head.

“Honestly I’m okay!” She felt guilty for sending Seo into such a panic. “I think I’ll have to get this fixed though.” She laughed briefly, a sad smile breaking its way onto her face. She didn’t really want to change anything about the bike, it was such a heartwarming present and something that really resonated in her heart. With the way things were going, she wanted to keep every piece of her family’s collectibles.

As she moved to reach for her bike, Aurora slightly winced at the pain travelling through her leg up to her knee. Today surely wasn’t going to get any better.
She reached down, rubbing at her left knee.
“I’m sorry to worry you, Seo.” Aurora began, standing up straight to brush her hair back from her face. “I’ll be fine, honestly. I’m always fine, me!” She raised her arm in an attempt of a flex, failing.

The screech of breaking caught her ears and she turned just in time to notice Violet, her brilliant and intelligent friend. Her face lit up once more and she excitedly waved, despite being in close quarters.

“Violet, hi!” Aurora noticed her eyes drift towards the sad excuse of her bike and she laughed, waving it off. “Don’t worry about this ol’ thing! It may look rusty but it’s a formidable opponent!”

The squirrel was the cutest thing she’d ever seen; every time she saw it, she wanted one for herself. The cute fuzziness was always a delight to see crawling on her and sometimes she carries nuts in her pocket, although today she forget them- How stupid of her.

“Hey there, Tio! I haven’t got anything for you today...Sorry.” Aurora reached out with her free hand, curling her fingers into a fist and leaving her forefinger outstretched so she could gently rub between Tio’s ears.
“Are you being good today? I bet you are.” She grinned and finally turned towards Violet.

“I’m okay, I promise!” She lied. Her knee throbbed and her leg was starting to ache too. After applying some ointment it would probably feel better— Maybe her walk through town wasn’t going to happen. Onward to home after this encounter.

Joshua went to the back with Sage, crossing his arms once they were at the dishwasher. "I think it was my kicking it around that broke it." Joshua delivered the joke with such a straight face and monotone voice that anyone else would have taken him seriously. But, as always, it was just another one of his dryly delivered jokes. "The water pressure makes it more like a gentle spray, and none of the parts inside are moving the way they should." He listed the only two issues he found with the dishwasher. Joshua already knew plenty about appliance repair, but ever since moving to snowbrush, he learned that it was far more acceptable for someone to be uninformed about something that wasn't specifically their profession. It allowed him a lot of lazy time. A time he enjoyed most.

"Want me to fix you a drink while you work?"
