thin gills along his neck and just beneath his ribs that are sensitive to touch with sharp canines and elongated claws made to slice through the water, easily used to catch various prey. the fronds and frills interwoven within his darkened-brown locks are one of the more expression features, similar to animal's ears which are an obvious sign of what yuhwa might be expressing and can be used to communicate with other merfolk. depending on how strong yuhwa's emotions are will determine the luster his scales give off. the more negative, the duller the scales will become until they fall, but the brighter the emotion, the brighter his scales become. of course, just like shedding, yuhwa will need to pluck the dead scales to insure healthier scales grow.

โ€” born to sujin aeng and chaeyeong mae. yuhwa was the second oldest; otherwise dubbed as the scapegoat compared to his other siblings who were treated like royalty. it was unfair, but yuhwa didnโ€™t know any better. he was a mistake. something that happened without warning unlike his older brother ( longwei ) and younger sister ( shanshan ).
โ€” their father would leave for months claiming he was going on extended hunting trips ( as they werenโ€™t exactly a pod ) to provide for his family when in reality ? he was visiting his mistress on land, unbothered that he was cheating on his mate and causing strife within the family.
โ€” as his siblings were treated with respect, yuhwa was used to release frustration. mostly his mother. the mermaid resorting to locking him away with muzzles and shackles sheโ€™d found on land. anything she could get her hands on as punishment. heโ€™d spend days locked away. sometimes weeks if his mother forgot about him. more often than not, shanshan would be the one to release him from his confinements. longwei scoffed, cuffing yuhwa over the head as a way of him showing his concern / affection.
โžค yuhwa was terrified of the dark and the thought of being alone. especially closed-in-spaces ( life would not be kind to the betta fish in the future, sadly ).
โ€” chaeyeong blamed yuhwa for her misfortunes. realizing that her mate was cheating on her. after all, he was the scapegoat. the one that was supposed to deal with the abuse. nothing more that a useless merman. his mother liked to remind him of that. yuhwa wasnโ€™t sure if the mental or physical abuse was worse.

โ€” suijin hadnโ€™t been there when they watched their mother drink herself to death. the three alone on land until he returned. the family having moved on land not, but a few months ago. yuhwa had missed the way the water glided across his scales. most of all, he missed his tail. suijin appeared with his mistress ( bora seong ) in tow. the male could not care less about what happened to chaeyeong mae.
โ€” it seemed suijin mated with bora, uncaring about his deceased mate and children. naturally, bora was a sophisticated human with suijin wrapped around her finger. she wanted nothing to do with his children, but realized the profit she could make later on.
โ€” bora tossed yuhwa to the side, left to fend for himself most days as he slept on the streets while his siblings were taken under her wing.
โ€” the only option was to sell his pearls otherwise heโ€™d starve. it was common for yuhwa to be chased my rapid dogs while scrounging for food. he did his best to fight them off with what little strength he had. the child malnourished and smaller than most children his age. although, he wasnโ€™t quite human either, but few knew that until bora found out.
โžค yuhwa was terrified of dogs. something that would haunt him for the rest of his life.
โ€” bora sold yuhwaโ€™s pearls. doing just about anything to get him to cry. whether that was hurting him or hurting his siblings. yuhwa would cry at the drop of a hat when she threatened to hurt his siblings. the two meant the world to him.

โ€” yuhwa overheard his father and bora speaking about selling shanshan and him to humans. leaving longwei to deal with the brunt of the abuse as a slave of sorts. it broke yuhwaโ€™s heart. he knew his father never cared much, but he had hoped.
โ€” unable to bear it anymore, the betta fish burst forward. he decided without hesitation. he would offer as many pearls as possible if his siblings remained safe. he offered himself as the only one to be sold. he was a scapegoat, after all. yuhwaโ€™s emotions didnโ€™t matter.
โ€” what yuhwa didnโ€™t know was that had been their plan all along. they just needed to make it seem yuhwa had thought of it himself.

โ€” in the end, yuhwa was sold to sebastian. becoming an exotic creature. a slave / bed warmer for the human who couldnโ€™t wait to show off his new pet.
โ€” sebastian was mentally abusive, taking joy in breaking yuhwa piece by piece. manipulating him into the perfect specimen. showcasing the betta fish for all to see his prized purchase.
โ€” yuhwa doesnโ€™t remember much while he was with sebastian. it seems his brain had closed off those memories, and he has no intentions of remembering them.

โ€” sebastian brought yuhwa to the black market, having found some items he desired during the auction. despite not being on the list, yuhwa was a sight for sore eyes. he was beautiful with long dark chestnut-hued locks that flared reds and pinks.
โ€” a well-known figure in the black market took interest in yuhwa. the man offering immense sums of money for the betta fish. of course, sebastian couldnโ€™t refuse. money was money, after all. without so much as batting an eye, yuhwa was with his new master.

โ€” it was absolute hell. yuhwa doesnโ€™t remember much of what happened, but it isnโ€™t hard to take guesses and the nightmares sure donโ€™t help. sui was physically, yet mentally abusive. having starved yuhwa for days on end. used as a bed warmer, while being held up in a small tank with no room to move for weeks on end. it was torturous. belittled to nothing, but a prized pet.
โ€” something he remembers vividly is being locked up in this large bird-like cage, watching sui stuff his face. juices trickling down his chin as he laughed, grinning manically at yuhwa who could do nothing, but chew on his tongue hoping to settle his rumbling stomach.
โ€” he was a glorified trophy, something for people to look at while sui ( and sebastian ) plucked scales to sell off as hoaxed ingredients for love potions, and anti-aging creams.
โ€” the two having done whatever it took to get the male to cry pearls, selling them for money whether it was for jewelry or other purposes.

โ€” during his time with huang sui, yuhwa gave birth to a red-haired pup named seojun ( sebastianโ€™s biological child, but few people knew that, yuhwa sure as hell didnโ€™t ). the betta fish cared for the pup for the first few months until sui sold him. yuhwa isnโ€™t sure what happened to the pup, but nothing good came out of it. he was certain about that. a parent unable to protect the only pup he had from the humanโ€™s greedy hands.

โ€” yuhwa was a known object in the black market, sui often selling him for a certain amount of hours, doing whatever they pleased as long as he wasnโ€™t physically harmed. that was the only rule.
โ€” had a shock collar to keep the merman in place if he were to lash out. something heโ€™s done many times when things became too much. the betta fish becoming feral as he kicked and clawed at his captors.
โ€” during one of them, yuhwa met zhiqiang who bought him to give the merman a break from the chaos. the two holding a decent conversation. zhiqiangโ€™s heart breaking bit by bit at the bubbly male despite all that has happened. zhiqiang was only a year older than yuhwa, having come with his father and older brother.
โ€” yuhwa never saw him again after that.

โ€” the betta fish had escaped during one of his transfers. escaping with no plan in mind, but to get as far away as possible. in the end, yuhwa traveled. having tasted freedom for the first time since he was a guppy. it wasnโ€™t long when yuhwa bumped into keane. the two diving into a drinking competition, neither one of them letting until the bar owner kicked them out, mentioning theyโ€™d run his business to the ground if they continued.
โ€” the two became gradual friends until yuhwa was captured for the sake of hurting keane. it was then that yuhwa saw zhiqiang again. the merman trilling in happiness at the sight of the human whoโ€™d shown him kindness.
โ€” it took some convincing, but zhiqiang managed to convenience keane that heโ€™d protect yuhwa. the two escaping just as keane took to the water to rescue his pod.

โ€” the two became lovers; soulmates. mating / marrying one another. it wasnโ€™t long when yuhwa became to expect a pup. one he will protect and watch grow old with zhiqiang beside him. a promising future that yuhwa couldnโ€™t wait to witness with his pup and husband.
โ€” sadly, that happiness was destroyed when their ship was attacked. the merman forced to watch as they stabbed zhiqiang, tossing his body over the rail to drown at sea. the one place he thought could never hurt him.

โ€” yuhwa was a prisoner once again. stuck in a decently sized barrel, heavily pregnant. he gave birth to liqiu, a daughter that had zhiqiangโ€™s facial shape and peach-tinted hues. he thought he had hidden her deep within the barrel, but that wasnโ€™t the case. he was forced to watch as they took another pup from him. just barely a few weeks old. selling her to who knows where. she had been the only thing he had left of his husband, and he could do nothing, but wail in grief.
โ€” baihu had been the one to capture him, killing his mate, and selling his daughter who knows where. it was bearable. the white-haired pirate wasnโ€™t all that bad until they docked.
โ€” he was sold to choi kyungmin who was worse than sui and sebastian combined.
โ€” the noble male was obsessive and terrifyingly controlling. he was unwilling to let yuhwa go. claiming he paid good money for the betta fish and he would not let it go to waste. the betta fish who cried pearls. kyungmin will put the fish to good use. even as his scales dulled, lacking their usual vibrant luster.
โ€” the man collecting yuhwaโ€™s pearls, laughing as he did so in see-through pouches. the noble grinning at his for-seeable-future.
โ€” kyungmin was one of the few reasons yuhwa has crooked fingers, laden with scars. his bones hurting at the slightest cold draft.
โ€” by some miracle, yuhwa escaped. the male making a make-shift weapon while locked away in kyungminโ€™s grand basement, shackled to the ground.

โ€” months after his escape, yuhwa bumped into keane while on land. the blond immediately wrapping the dull-eyed male into a hug. yuhwa had been welcomed into keaneโ€™s pod of freaks, comprising keane, mason, kaede, kavan, and kaoru-ren.

โ€” for the next few years, the group was doing well. the unlikely mesh of species seeming to bond well until things went haywire.
โ€” it had been a routine exploration of an unmarked floating island when tragedy struck the ground.

shapeshifting



just like most merfolk, yuhwa is able to shift ( still just as painful ) as merfolk have two hearts, one residing behind his sternum while the other resides close to his abdomen. while most merfolk posse both gills and lungs, it can be rather painful when merfolk shift as their gills sink into flesh while their lungs struggle to take on the heavy burden of providing oxygen to their host. the most painful is when their tails split to form a pair of legs as their fins fold with various snaps and cracks of bones growing and organs taking shape within his body. it is an agonizing process, one most merfolk take little comfort in, as it can take minutes to hours to complete a single shift, regardless if they're shifting from merfolk to hume or vise versa.

in addition, yuhwa can alter his human body, although he cannot alter his height and weight, but he can alter his hair ( length / style / color ) as well as the shape / color of his eyes. this does require complete concertation and a photographic memory. currently yuhwa possesses five appearances, not counting his original appearance.

















crying pearls



the ability to shed pearls of various luster and size when crying, although he does shed actual tears. the second his sheds tears is when these pearls begin to take shape. the stronger the emotion, the brighter its glow and the its abundance compared to the duller and less abundant when his emotions are at its weakest. because of this, yuhwa is a prized possession as pearls are valuable amongst land dwellers, and some will do just about anything to get the petite male to cry.

















yin phantom



allows him to create, shape, and manipulate dark energy. although appearing flame-like, ranging from dark / neon reds to black. yuhwa is often seen drawing it from his own body filled with resentful / yin energy, channeling it into a variety of tasks that often results in direct, destructive, and violent outcomes. something that yuhwa is forced to " consume " negative energy ( negative emotions ) allowing it to fester within his own body. sometimes he isn't aware he's drawing it in. often affecting his emotions and thought process. it amplifies his other abilities that's slowly poisoning his body the more he " soaks / consumes " and essentially, the more he uses his abilities, the sicker he becomes. prone to bleeding out from the four orifices ( ears / nose / mouth / eyes ) or passing out at random, taking him out for the remaining day ( s ). something that shouldn't be taken lightly as it could very well cost his life. this ability is destroying him from the inside out. yuhwa is often seen using with dark / shadow-like aura that surrounds oneself in / with darkness / shadows that emits a crimson, cherry-like red color with tints of black ( flame-like ) that is used as a defensive measure, most describing it as bird-like when fully activated . it allows yuhwa to create, shape, and manipulate darkness / shadows, itself. often used to cloud everything in total darkness ( two - one mile radius ), yuhwa uses his own " infinite " supply of darkness residing within his own body. often used to teleport one's self ( think of ruby from rwby in terms of " teleportation " which isn't exactly " teleportation " but more-so supernatural speeds using shadows ). because of this, yuhwa is quicker to tire out. the longer his ability is in use, the higher the risk is of bleeding out or falling into a coma-like state until his body is able to replenish the energy lost. more-so yuhwa is able to construct shield-like shadows ( cannot use on himself ) as these sheild-like obkects require massive amounts of energy, feeding it darkness. these shields appear opaque like shadows with a tinge of cherry-red. it helps bleed out the darkness he's stock piled, but it can backfire if he holds them for longer than he's supposed to. the second he goes over the limit ( bigger shields = shorter limit / smaller shields = longer limit ) his body can handle can cause massive migraines. another way he can utilize it is by transferring physical / mental pain and or wounds onto himself. a negative thing can easily latch onto his frame which oozes yin energy. although transferring mental pain requires him to have a strong mental state, something yuhwa isn't the most proficient at. regardless, this is even more taxing on his body that requires vast amounts of energy depending on the wound. the bigger / more wound ( s ) can take longer to heal while smaller / less wound ( s ) can take a few minutes ( half-an-hour ) to heal.

โ€” in the beginning, before mason came to be. there was a pod that lived deep within the ocean. well-known for being bloodthirsty. their cruelty knowing no bounds. those within the pod that showed the slightest ounce of compassion ? where to be disposed off. the pod craved power, and with that, they took to land.
โ€” the evangeline pod becoming well-known for trading of merfolk, whether that be glimmering scales or merfolk kidnapped from other pods. it was a blossoming business. one the pod took pride in, even if they were selling their own kind.
โ€” evangeline chiefs took pride in their work, crafting their children to be cold-hearted killers, but graceful.
โ€” the previous chief; lenora evangeline gave birth to a set of twins ; victoria and hadria, followed by her youngest child ; rishima. lenoraโ€™s mate, vladimir couldnโ€™t have been happier to lay eyes on their guppies.

โ€” victoria grew jealous and spiteful. her parents had made it clear she would never be the next chief, nor would she ever be their favorite guppy. the parents often pampering hadria with gifts and riches while victoria was tossed to the side. it was beyond annoying, and the red-eyed woman swore to make her twin pay.

โ€” victoria killed hadria, taking her place to be mated to akio shimizu. till this day, no one knows what happened to hadria. many assume she was taken, while others believe there had been foul play. of course, victoria covered her tracks.
โ€” she would threaten akio if he refused to mate with her, claiming she would destroy everyone within the pod if he refused. threatening to kill those he loved in order to prove her parents wrong. she was powerful, as much as she craved blood.
โ€” the woman, now dubbed victoria shimizu would mate with the chief, bearing guppies for the pod. she gave birth to twins ; aoi and azure shimizu. not long, victoria would give birth to cassandra shimizu.

โ€” victoria was an evil woman, manipulative and enjoying as merfolk crumbled beneath her claws. she was physically / verbally abusive to her children, especially her mate who did his best to keep their family dynamics under wraps, all while doing his best to protect his children. even if it costs him his life.
โ€” it was hell. mason hated it. he hated her. he was beaten and tossed around like yesterdayโ€™s trash. it was never a good day. most of the pod remained oblivious.
โ€” victoria seemed to hate mason the most. who was a replica of her husband ? she hated him - them. she wanted nothing to do with them. often leaving her guppies with sinikka ( a healer within the pod ). it became apparent that sinikka had become a mother to the guppies, something victoria despised, but could do nothing about as she held no real power within the pod unless she became the chief.

โ€” the family had been far out when the murder took place, victoria cackling as she threatened the twins with the promise of unspeakable death and the notion that if they were to tell anyone, sheโ€™d kill everyone within the pod. speaking of horrors of what humans could do if merfolk were captured, striking fear into their hearts at the tender age of seven.
โ€” mason had been the one to move before his mind caught up to him, attempting to stop the bleeding as akio comforted his son. the boy outright pleading for his father to hold on until they could get sinikka, but it was too late ( mason still continues to blame himself for akioโ€™s death - for not being strong enough to protect the few good things in his life ).
โ€” the twins were left with invisible wounds. terrified of what could happen. victoria assumed she would have taken the position as the next chief, but it seems she had been wrong. either aoi or azure would become chief, but because they werenโ€™t of age, their uncle had taken up the role. victoria was furious, but she would bit her tongue and wait. the news of akio being killed by humans was still fresh within the pods minds. of course, victoria covered her tracks. she was a wonderful mother, after all.

โ€” through the years, victoria was worse than ever. the mermaid in sheep's clothing. she was satin in an angelโ€™s body. no one realized just how ruthless she could be until it was too late.
โ€” mason did his best to withstand the abuse, determined to protect his twin and younger sister no matter the cost. it seems his self-sacrificing nature seemed to develop, stronger than ever.

โ€” some years later, the two developed an odd relationship that wasnโ€™t quite platonic, but it wasnโ€™t romantic, either. a bond that developed through trail and error, relishing in each otherโ€™s company until things fell into place almost naturally.
โ€” mason hadnโ€™t been aware the merkoi had been pregnant with his guppies when the mating tournament took place. the white-scaled koi keeping the pregnancy a secret until she had won ( assuming sheโ€™d win for victoria had pushed this old tradition relentlessly until masonโ€™s uncle caved in ).
โ€” the mating tournament was held with invitations sent out to neighboring pods to grow and combine, giving them a greater chance of survival. many pods offered their best for the competition. whoever won would become the mate of the soon-to-be chief.

โ€” as the competition ended, the two remaining were chi and lyra. as they battled, chi was declared the victoria, killing her opponent ( lyra ).
โ€” chi had been a pawn for victoria to use, realizing she wouldnโ€™t become the chief if mason were to mate with lyra ( having found his mate prior to the competition even being mentioned ). it would have ruined her plans in becoming the chief. so she put chi in the competition, having trained her and coated her claws in poison to further her chances of winning ( which did wonders ).
โ€” mason had to mate the mermaid that murdered his lover ( ? ). the raven-haired brute suffered at the hands of an abusive mate.
โ€” chi fushimi would change his views of love drastically, and something mason had thought to have lost forever if it wasnโ€™t for those he met in the future. his view of adults shattered, as was the fact anyone can and will leave you. promises met nothing. life was cruel, and he was useless to stop any of it, no matter how hard he tried, struggling to protect the few that remained only to get slapped in the face.
โ€” mason seemed to never get a break from the two that he feared most. no matter where he went, there was some ungodly shadow towering over him. some days he couldnโ€™t leave their den ( in a small cave ) while other times he was chained. threats were constant until he grew accustomed to them that threats barely made a dent to his scarred frame.
โ€” regardless, chi made his life a living hell. he was nothing more than eye candy to her. damaged goods that had nothing to offer. he wasnโ€™t the chief. he was nothing more than a puppet to put on display for strangers to look at and laugh about.

โ€” things fell to mayhem. witnessing victoria murder sinikka ( a shaman that could be considered a higher rank than chiefs ) and of course, victoria didnโ€™t like the power sinikka held and thus, killed her far away from the pod. mason having been the only witness ( shortly telling aoi and cassandra overhearing their adoptive mother had been killed ).
โ€” victoria accused mason of killing the podโ€™s shaman, when things fell into chaos. humans arrived in big boats. during it all, victoria had gotten a hold of cassandra, killing her with a snap to the neck while mason was forced to watch as aoi was captured and taken to the surface.
โ€” having lost three of the very few merfolks he cared about, he hoped to whatever deity that would listen to him that his daughter was safe ( who had come just after lyra was killed and mason had become the official chief, lyra having given birth to the koi hybrid prior to the competition starting ). in the end, he could barely do anything as the humans took the last thing he had of lyra. itโ€™s unknown if aoi and azumi are alive.

โ€” shortly afterward, he was banished from his pod. an exiled chief that would be alone until he died. victoria got what she wanted while chi soared. mocking the male as he left with a broken soul, a far outcry to the grief he felt.

โ€” months after his banishment, mason continued to hunt down those who had taken the few people he cared for. until he was captured himself. the raven-haired merman uncaring if he died by human hands or that his scales would be plucked until he died. nothing mattered. he wanted the numbness to stop. it wasnโ€™t until a blond merman came into view, taking action in cutting the net. he wasted no time in destroying the humans on the ship, saving mason from a gruesome fate.

โ€” the exiled great white and a hybrid without a pod. two unlikely fellows seeming to mesh well enough to travel. it was common to see them bicker and rough-house, attempting to one-up each other in a good game of dominance and childish fun.
โ€” the two went on adventures, even if they were being hunted down by those who sought revenge and those who wished to see the exiled chief fall for false accusations.
โ€” not before long did they met kaede and kaoru-ren ( kemonomimi species ). kaede had been a runaway noble, unlike kaoru-ren who was running away from a small group of assassins, which was once his โ€œ home / family. โ€ the two having met half-way, deeming that two were better than one. it hadnโ€™t been long when the duo found themselves in a sticky situation. having been backed into a corner ( theoretically ) who wanted to sell the kemonomimi.
โ€” keane and mason had been passing by. keane wanted nothing to do with it, unlike mason who grinned, charging into the mess without a second thought. naturally, the spiky blond followed his pod mate, grumbling along the way.
โ€” the two came in all their fiery glory, nabbing the kemonomimi men and taking off. with a bit of convincing, keane and mason remained on land with kaede and kaoru-ren. the two eventually becoming โ€œ pod mates โ€ despite keane denying it.

โ€” the four were a chaotic mess. many people unwilling to believe such personalities would mesh well, but they made it work. the four becoming more than friends, but not exactly dating. they didnโ€™t need labels. never had.
โ€” it wasnโ€™t until later when the four met kavan, a guard for a noble family having sold him into slavery.
โ€” the group needed money. mason ended up being โ€œ kidnapped โ€ although the male wasnโ€™t too concerned. having become a โ€œ gladiator โ€ of sorts for peopleโ€™s entertainments. it had only been a month when keane came in all his explosive glory to break out their partner, kaede and kaoru-ren quick to provide back-up.

โ€” yuhwa had eventually joined the group. a far outcry of what he used to be. the bubbly male seemed lost. the pinkette quick to be welcomed into their disorganized pod.

โ€” for the next few years, the group was doing well. the unlikely mesh of species seeming to bond well until things went haywire.

just like most merfolk, mason is able to shift ( still just as painful ) as merfolk have two hearts, one residing behind his sternum while the other resides close to his abdomen. while most merfolk posse both gills and lungs, it can be rather painful when merfolk shift as their gills sink into flesh while their lungs struggle to take on the heavy burden of providing oxygen to their host. the most painful is when their tails split to form a pair of legs as their fins fold with various snaps and cracks of bones growing and organs taking shape within his body. it is an agonizing process, one most merfolk take little comfort in, as it can take minutes to hours to complete a single shift, regardless if they're shifting from merfolk to hume or vise versa.

to generate and manipulate blue flames at will. it does heavily tie into his emotions, sometimes triggering large bursts of flames when overwhelmed. often negative emotions like fear or anger. he can't control it, resulting in destructive outcomes and possible deaths. the larger the attack, the danger of his body overheating from the inside, burning his flesh. although this is a gradual process. something that isn't noticeable now until later in the roleplay when large burn scars appear [ ref ].

to generate and manipulate blue lightning at will. it does heavily tie into his emotions, such as large bursts of lightning sparking from his hands when he's overly irritated or pissed to simple charges that barely do anything, although that doesn't always seem to be the case. the stronger the emotion he feels, the more unstable it can become. when he is in full control, it is something similar to lightning bending in avatar or denki from bnha, for example. although he can give himself some nasty burns when he isn't paying attention or some minor brain damage when using it for long periods of time. he can redirect lightning during a thunderstorm of sorts, allowing himself to essentially become a " battery " and then directing it somewhere else. of course, mason does have his limits. the weaker / lower the voltage the longer he's able to utilize his ability, whereas the stronger / higher the voltage the quicker he tires out and is unable to hold such a voltage for long periods of time. essentially, he can last longer using weaker chargers and the stronger the charge shorts that time to minutes or hours depending on the velocity.

thick gills along his neck and just beneath his ribs that are sensitive to the touch. an easy weakness if someone needs to get away as they are one of the most painful when hit. posseting sharp teeth with elongated canines and claws made to slice into thick blubber. because of his hybrid heritage, keane has eighteen spines along his dorsal and pelvic fins. this is often to gain a upper claw in a fight, showcasing his strength, and aiding him in hunts. if one were to be stung by one of these quills can include several hours of extreme agony that begins as a tingling sensation until it takes hold. of course, they can develop within minutes or several hours, but it isn't permanent. these symptoms include swelling, tenderness, warm skin ( around the sting ), redness, sweating, muscle weakness, subcutaneous bleeding, and various tinging sensations. although being stung by one of keane's quills will certainly not lead to death as there are various ways to heal such as pain medication, washing the wound, applying heat ( or cold ), etc. it's noted that the swelling typically clears in two / three days whereas skin discoloration can last up to five days. of course, these spines can be dangerous; they can easily be broken if his opponent swings at a specific angle, rendering them useless and will not be able to grow back.

โ€” keane was born to lillemor and keahi valiente whom were mated to produce exceptional guppies to mold into brief warriors and soon-to-be chiefs. as lillemor was a full-blooded tiger mershark, whereas keahi was a full-blooded lionfish mer. some took on traits of one of their parents, while others got traits of both tiger shark and lionfish.
โ€” lillemor was mentally abusive, whereas keahi often ignored them. unable to look at them, wanting nothing to do with something he had no say in. it was a horrendous agreement, built upon producing strong guppies.

โ€” itโ€™s noted that for most their childhood, it was nothing, but destructive and manipulative. lillemor would often pit the twenty-some guppies in brutal fights, watching them kill each other. it was the quickest way to wean the strongest from the weakest. it was hell, especially when keane wanted nothing to do with his family.
โ€” the hybrid often exploring the ocean with stryker close on his tailfin. it seemed no matter what the hybrid did, his younger brother was always a few tails behind him. they were close, as much as brothers can be. the younger annoying his older brother, while keane did his best ( as much as a short-tempered asshole keane is ) to take care of stryker.
โ€” their parents were never in the picture, rather, far too busy ignoring each other to pay attention to their growing guppies or lillemor training them until their bodies were too weak to move. it was repetitive, but it strengthened them. even if things could have been done differently.
โ€” on rare occasions, lillemor would pit her own guppies against other guppies within the barbarian pod. finding joy in these fights as other merfolk watch from afar. it was a tradition. it was barbaric, but it mattered little to the barbarian merfolks.

โ€” keane grew up in a harsh environment. believing in gods and goddesses as primal beings that created the world. the pod thrived off of bloodshed and battling other pods for territory and it had been glorious. it was an honor to die fighting for your pod. and that was all keane knew. blood and death were frequent within their barbarian pod of mersharks and lionfish, wearing their enemies teeth on threads of strong seaweed, showcasing their strength and power.
โ€” they hosted deadly tournaments. keane a frequent victor amongst his pod mates. it was a way to showcase their dominance over those within the pod.
โ€” these tournaments were of two occasions. one known as the feasts of dueling, known to be held every full moon and new-moon. two warriors are to battle, displaying their capabilities and strengths to all those watching ( while showcasing their mating potential ) in the make-shift arena ( within a large enough cave to pit the fifty-some members of the pod ). when one fighter is on the brink of death, the match will stop as healers rush to the wounded mershark, whereas the mershark standing becomes the victor. the second is known as blood shed which was used to execute mersharks who had done wrong to the chief and its pod mates whether thatโ€™s talking with humans ( or saving them ), especially those who wish to fight the chief and claim its rank as the new barbarian chief.
โ€” lillemor couldnโ€™t have been happier to have such a strong and bloodthirsty son. it wasnโ€™t before long when he was made to be the next chief. and thus even harsher training begun. his mother wanting nothing more than to manipulative him into her puppet that would do her bidding even after her death.
โ€” it was hell. keane spent more time with lillemor, unable to do what he once did with his youngest brother, stryker who was caught befriending a human duo. keane was forced to watch one of the few family members he cherished be executed in one of the most gruesome ways. it was then that he hated humans far more than ever he had.

โ€” to get away from it all, keane would pulverize anyone whoโ€™d dared to fight against him. he was an explosive nightmare on the streets. the blond finding himself in taverns and bars, drinking with strangers and fellow merfolk. it was the only time he could get away from his mother and losing one of the few family members he cared about laying somewhere deep in the trench.
โ€” during this time, keane met a recently escaped slave dubbed yuhwa who was a merman. something about the pinkette reminded him of his younger brother, and somehow the little shit wormed himself into keaneโ€™s heart.
โ€” the two bonded over drinking their emotions away. having good-felt drinking competitions as they enjoyed each otherโ€™s companies, even if yuhwa was an annoying pipsqueak.

โ€” keane had been notorious for sinking ships and killing humans ( mostly of noble status ) in a fit of blinding rage, which only seemed to backfire as those who craved revenge observed the spiky blond. it wasnโ€™t before long that keane was forced to make a tough choice.
โ€” yuhwa had been kidnapped, forcing keaneโ€™s hand. the male wanting nothing, but to protect the bubbly pinkette from harm, but at what cost ?
โ€” it wasnโ€™t long when keane was locked away, kicking and screaming at the humans. the blond craving to rip into soft flesh and watch the water turn crimson. thatโ€™s when the humans realized yuhwa was a slave who had escaped from sui ( yuhwaโ€™s master at the time ). the group having initially wanting to sell the male, wanted to sell the merman back to his previous owner for a greater price.
โ€” keane was stuck, having witnessed the humans spill oil into the ocean, heading straight to where his pod lived. the male had to make a choice. either he escaped with yuhwa, or he returned to his pod to warn them of the oil seeping into the ocean, rescuing them from an awful fate.
โ€” it wasnโ€™t until a human came, promising to rescue the pinkette while keane returned to his pod. it had been difficult to trust the human. the very species that caused him grief, but in the end, keane could do nothing, but put his trust into the long-haired male ( zhiqiang ).

โ€” returning to the pod was hell. the blond having to watch as his pod mates suffocate as oil sticks to their gills and clogs their lungs. itโ€™d give keane nightmares for years ( still does ). the male finding his mother in the mess, only for the woman to blame him for everything. if he hadnโ€™t been so weak, then perhaps ? things would have been different. the last words his mother would ever say were : โ€œ i hate you. โ€

โ€” those of the pod that survived blamed keane for the pods misfortune.
โ€” keane took to the open ocean. the blond unable to remain where he once called โ€œ home. โ€ he had gone on a murderous rampage. the blond filled to the brim with bubbling anger until it exploded, unable to stop the strong need for revenge. would that bring his pod mates back ? no. but keane didnโ€™t like feeling emotions. it made things hurt far more than anger did. anger he could handle, and so he did.
โ€” keane had killed many fishermen, commoners, and nobles alike. the fiery male lost in a sea of rage and grief. something he never wanted to experience again.
โ€” it wasnโ€™t long until long as a warning to those who sailed these waters of a furious merman sinking boats and drowning humans. rumors beginning to spread of a merman with fiery-like colors and crimson hues was out for human blood.

โ€” amidst his travels, keane discovered a dark-haired merman struggling within a net, humans attempting to drag the large great white onto the ship. it didnโ€™t help the blond much. keane still feeling the bubbling hatred boiling. in the end, he had taken action to cut the net. the male wasting no time in destroying those on the ship, ultimately saving mason from a gruesome fate.
โ€” the exiled great white and a hybrid without a pod. two unlikely fellows seeming to mesh well enough to travel. it was common to see them bicker and rough-house, attempting to one-up each other in a good game of dominance and childish fun.
โ€” the two went on adventures, even if they were being hunted down by those who sought revenge and those who wished to see the exiled chief fall for false accusations.
โ€” not before long did they met kaede and kaoru-ren ( kemonomimi species ). kaede had been a runaway noble, unlike kaoru-ren who was running away from a small group of assassins, which was once his โ€œ home / family. โ€ the two having met half-way, deeming that two were better than one. it hadnโ€™t been long when the duo found themselves in a sticky situation. having been backed into a corner ( theoretically ) who wanted to sell the kemonomimi.
โ€” keane and mason had been passing by. keane wanted nothing to do with it, unlike mason who grinned, charging into the mess without a second thought. naturally, the spiky blond followed his pod mate, grumbling along the way.
โ€” the two came in all their fiery glory, nabbing the kemonomimi men and taking off. with a bit of convincing, keane and mason remained on land with kaede and kaoru-ren. the two eventually becoming โ€œ pod mates โ€ despite keane denying it.

โ€” the four were a chaotic mess. many people unwilling to believe such personalities would mesh well, but they made it work. the four becoming more than friends, but not exactly dating. they didnโ€™t need labels. never had.
โ€” it wasnโ€™t until later when the four met kavan, a guard for a noble family having sold him into slavery.
โ€” the group needed money. mason ended up being โ€œ kidnapped โ€ although the male wasnโ€™t too concerned. having become a โ€œ gladiator โ€ of sorts for peopleโ€™s entertainments. it had only been a month when keane came in all his explosive glory to break out their partner, kaede and kaoru-ren quick to provide back-up.

โ€” yuhwa had eventually joined the group. a far outcry of what he used to be. the bubbly male seemed lost. the pinkette quick to be welcomed into their disorganized pod.

โ€” for the next few years, the group was doing well. the unlikely mesh of species seeming to bond well until things went haywire.
โ€” it had been a routine exploration of an unmarked floating island when tragedy struck the ground.
โ€” an ambush had taken place, wanting kaoru-ren and kaede. the group fought tooth and nail to remain together. sadly, amidst the chaos, kaede and kaoru-ren were killed ( a couple of days prior to the roleplay starting ).
โ€” kavan was taken, unknown to the three if the wolfblood was still alive or not. mason was badly injured. yuhwa seemed to huddle into himself, fretting over the two males, hoping to distract himself from the grief. keane continued to wallow in anger.

just like most merfolk, keane is able to shift ( still just as painful ) as merfolk have two hearts, one residing behind his sternum while the other resides close to his abdomen. while most merfolk posse both gills and lungs, it can be rather painful when merfolk shift as their gills sink into flesh while their lungs struggle to take on the heavy burden of providing oxygen to their host. the most painful is when their tails split to form a pair of legs as their fins fold with various snaps and cracks of bones growing and organs taking shape within his body. it is an agonizing process, one most merfolk take little comfort in, as it can take minutes to hours to complete a single shift, regardless if they're shifting from merfolk to hume or vise versa.

the ability to generate explosions with his hands from the nitroglycerin-like substance he sweats. it can spark without warning, heavily connected to his emotions. the more angry he is, the more small-based pops will appear. regardless, the stronger the emotion will led to pops and small explosions to create without being aware of it. the more he sweats, the bigger the explosion. of course, this ability relies heavily on his forearms. the more dangerous / powerful the explosion is the riskier it becomes. often leading to minor / major fractures or constantly getting carpal tunnel. the longer he uses it, the riskier it becomes. he'll tire out quicker, causing the explosions to become less effective.

the ability to absorb any damage dealt to his body whether thatโ€™s various blows / attacks. therefore, utilizing this absorption to enhance himself. examples include enhanced strength / speed and or sharpening his senses ( when in human form , if in his true form then this isnโ€™t included ). often used as a final attack, hoping to knock / destroy his opponent in one final move. the more energy his body absorbs and holds, the more dangerous he comes. keane becomes feral, losing majority of his senses that make him human ( ? ). no longer does he have a clear mind. the longer heโ€™s fallen into this primal state, the faster his energy is depleted. it begins to wear down his body until he collapses, unable to hold himself up until his body is able to accumulate whatever energy was lost in the fight. for example, an hour requires two to three days of rest ( not taking in account of his injuries which may take longer ). when using this ability, keane cannot feel pain which may be a good thing, but if the injury is dangerous, it could be deadly. another way to handle keaneโ€™s primal ability is simply, knocking him unconscious.

    yuhwa originally had silky dark brown colored locks that brushed against his nap with low bangs that reach just past the corner of his eyes. due to trauma, yuhwa opted to bore a light shade of strawberry, growing out his hair to appear fluffier with bangs that brush against the middle of his nose. although yuhwa is prone to shifting his hair color with a range of hairstyles, but generally keeps the same shade of light pink. his hair perfectly frames his diamond-shaped face and pointed chin w/ high cheekbones.

    yuhwa's tail comprises blacks, reds, silvers, pinks, and hints of white. black coats the majority of his tail with a handful of silver splotches that shimmer beneath the light's rays that gradually fade to a maroon ( #800000 ) hue nearing the base of his tail, flaring out to a fire brick ( #b22222 ) hue. it then fades to brilliant hues of pinks, before leaving white along his fins edges. various frills along his midsection where skin tappers off into obsidian-hued scales. various frills and fronts along his forearms as well as being interwoven into his dark chestnut-hued locks. various sized fins and frills made for agility that billow out, creating an alluring sight with shimmering gradient hues that can easily attract attention due to his vibrant shades of pinks and reds, contrasting with white along their edges. he is certainly a sight to behold beneath the ocean with milky white skin and soft curls.

    a semi-jagged scar that starts just below his left peck, traveling diagonally across his stomach and ending at his hip bone. series of gashes scattered across his backside in a crisscross pattern that began to fade against his milky white skin. thick puffy scars along the majority of his back close to the center where they appear to be grouped, overlapping one another. three burn-like wounds of varying sizes along his left shoulder caused by cigarettes / cigars. a distinctive scar along his neck, spanning along his pulse point that he keeps bandaged using a creamy white bandage with a pinkish tint. later on, receiving flame-like scarring along his shoulder and reaching up to stretch across the right side of his face [ ref ].
    .เณƒเฟ various gashes along his tail, some appearing " puffy " while others are nothing more than faded scars. there is a noticeable thick band around the base of his tail.

    thin gills along his neck and just beneath his ribs that are sensitive to touch with sharp canines and elongated claws made to slice through the water, easily used to catch various prey. the fronds and frills interwoven within his darkened-brown locks are one of the more expression features, similar to animal's ears which are an obvious sign of what yuhwa might be expressing and can be used to communicate with other merfolk. depending on how strong yuhwa's emotions are will determine the luster his scales give off. the more negative, the duller the scales will become until they fall, but the brighter the emotion, the brighter his scales become. of course, just like shedding, yuhwa will need to pluck the dead scales to insure healthier scales grow.

    yuhwa wears chokers, often black or red hue although he was given a half-red, half-white choker by a close friend. the red side possessing a velvety texture while the white side resembled pearls spaced apart. dangling in the center is a red heart with gold trimming [ ref ]. does wear a variety of face chains and the occasional body chain. wears creamy-hued bandages that have a pinkish tint to them, often wrapped around his throat, forearms, and chest. two promise rings looped with a leather cord ( choker-like in style ).

    scars and gashes in a variety of lengths and widths scattered across his frame in a disorganized pattern, some crisscrossing while others are diagonal, vertical, and or horizontal. keane especially hates it when the weather gets cold, causing the variety of scars decorating his frame to tighten and become painful, often as ghost pains that leave him unable to move or grow uncomfortable. a series of scars decorate his arms and upper shoulders [ ref / ref ] followed by numerous gashes along his muscular frame [ ref ]. a large x shaped scar that centers just below his pectorals, right in the center where it stretches out across his frame curling around his hips and stopping just before they curl around his shoulders. various bite marks decorate his caramelized skin, followed by frayed circular-shaped scars that appear puffy from spears and other objects impaling his frame. a more evident scar ( right side ) is the jagged porcelain-hued scar that begins just in the middle of his neck ( towards the back ) and curls upward, stopping just in the center of his cheek [ ref ].
    .เณƒเฟ various thin scars scattered along his tail with a series of small nicks along the edges of his caudal fin and dorsal fins. keane does have shark bits scattered about from territory disputes and his temper flaring out.









    other features

    thick gills along his neck and just beneath his ribs that are sensitive to the touch. an easy weakness if someone needs to get away as they are one of the most painful when hit. posseting sharp teeth with elongated canines and claws made to slice into thick blubber. because of his hybrid heritage, keane has eighteen spines along his dorsal and pelvic fins. this is often to gain an upper claw in a fight, showcasing his strength, and aiding him in hunts. if one were to be stung by one of these quills can include several hours of extreme agony that begins as a tingling sensation until it takes hold. of course, they can develop within minutes or several hours, but it isn't permanent. these symptoms include swelling, tenderness, warm skin ( around the sting ), redness, sweating, muscle weakness, subcutaneous bleeding, and various tinging sensations. although being stung by one of keane's quills will certainly not lead to death as there are various ways to heal such as pain medication, washing the wound, applying heat ( or cold ), etc. it's noted that the swelling typically clears in two / three days whereas skin discoloration can last up to five days. of course, these spines can be dangerous; they can easily be broken if his opponent swings at a specific angle, rendering them useless and will not be able to grow back.
