Interaction: Harian and Anubis

Why did the entrance to the Duat have to be in the middle of a desert? Harian had flown here as a little falcon, and though sun and sand and the heat mirages blowing off the scorching landscape all brought comfort...it was just too damn far from civilization. Her wings ached.
The statues rose tall, though she suspected no mortals would ever see them. This was no place for mortals...not living ones, anyway.
Now, which form to take...howabout...
When the jackal-headed god of embalming came into view, Harian was leaning casually against the giant stone forepaw of one of the sphinx, the glittering eyes of Sekhmet tracking him. The sun played in her ebony fur and on the khopesh blades at each hip.
"What's up dog?" She shot him a feral, sharp-toothed grin. Anubis would know that it wasn't a war goddess he was looking at, just a djinn, dragged back to earth for another round of unpleasant human shenanigans. She held up a dark hand, and between two fingers, there was a small card. "Telegram from the flyboys upstairs."
Harian wondered if Anubis still remembered that time she'd been ordered into a temple to steal a priceless ceremonial embalming tool from one of his priests. She really hoped the god wasn't the grudge-bearing type.

A cat was the best form Harian had chosen moving about the small Japanese town. People here liked cats. They were sensible people. The nine-tailed fox on Jophiel's list had not been easy to find. She moved with so much grace, her energy made only the tiniest of ripples. It was almost undetectable, even with the angel's locator magic. The young, white-haired woman was just in sight now and Harian the black cat stole up to a small fruit stand. It was selling many different things: Apples, cherries litchis...and satsumas. Harian had been around Japan enough to notice the small oranges being offered at temple shrines. She batted one off the pile like a ball, and continued to swat at it until it rolled to a halt right by Kiyomi's delicate feet.
Harian stopped one cat length away and waited for her to notice, and then to notice that the cat, wasn't quite a cat at all. Under one paw, was the little note Jophiel had instructed her to give.

The sea of echoing souls slowly lowered in volume from a thundering roar, to lulling rainstorm. Anubis took a deep breath, his tall ears twitching as the dessert wind passed him by. He didn't need to look to see he had company. With just a thought, the murky portal behind him swirled smaller and smaller until it blinked out of existence. An inky black blur leaping out at the last second. He heard a yip and then felt a familiar furry weight press against his legs. He reached down absently and scratched a head, not bothering to invoke his glamour he turned his face in the direction of his newfound visitor. A smirk on his snout, appearing as a sneer with his canine features. Chuckling at her greeting he just nodded and watched. "If it isn't our nimble, sticky fingered frie..." His voice low, sounding rough, almost gravely, he stopped taking in her current form. He sighed "I don't know if she would be impressed, or insulted at your uh, bravado to impersonate her" He chuckled. His eyes glowed briefly as he communicated to his companion The inky black fur of the jackal beside him rippled as it got up and made it's way to Harian. "Well, well, messenger pigeon, to the messenger pigeons eh?" He chuckled as the Jackal took the invite from between her fingers. Anubis stood there, still as the sphinx behind him. The hot dessert wind making his ears twitch. "Tell me, if you can. Was it at least put to good use?" He asked curiously, a smile/sneer on his face. "Before the curse took hold at least?" He sat awaiting her response, a brow lifted as the Jackal made it's way back to him.

Haraian had to try. It was fun, she was bored, and it kept the gorgons on their toes. This time she snuck in through the little entrance made for the snakes, and she went as a small, black python, with rainbow iridescence on her scales. Her eyes however, were still the same jewel-bright green they always were. The other snakes didn't notice immediately, she kept her head held high, pink tongue flicking in a business-like manner. She was just your average serpent teller headed to work. The vaulted cielings of Tartarus soared above her little snake head and she couldn't help but look up. Now where were those gorgons? How long would it be until someone noticed? They probably already had, nothing got past them. Though Harian did pride herself on being able to break in anywhere, Tartarus was not just anywhere.

The largest marketplace of Kyoto was bustling with new and old faces. Fresh scents of fruit, fish, bread, and the occasional sweet scent of cherry blossoms filled the air as humans shouted from their stalls, wishing to sell their wares to anyone willing to take a quick peek. Among those sea of faces was a beautiful woman with long white hair. An oil-paper umbrella was grasped between her fingertips, twirling above her gracefully with every delicate step she took. Her hair swayed in the wind, lone ivory strands brushing past her pale cheeks, dancing in the soft breeze like thin ballerinas. Wandering eyes gazed at the woman with bewilderment and intrigue as she passed by, unable to look away as if enchanted. The brilliant color of an orange seemed to catch her attention, and she stopped among the crowd. Although the marketplace was quite busy that day, this stall in particular was void of any customers, only receiving so much as a glance of acknowledgment from any being trekking past.

A frail elderly woman sat behind the fruit stall and her gaze was held low. With milky eyes, the blind woman did not see or hear the woman draw closer, stopping directly in front of her lonely fruit stall. Although the old woman could not see it, a beautiful smile danced across Kiyomi's lips. There was the sound of an angelic voice and her blind eyes shimmered to life.

"My, my... Do you pick these lovely fruits yourself?" She spoke softly. The elderly woman suddenly erupted with excitement and sat upright, nodding and beckoning her closer.

"Yes, yes I do! Please, choose from whatever you like."

Kiyomi looked rather conflicted and tapped the bottom of her lip with her fingertip gingerly, tilting her head to the side while examining the selection of fruits. It seemed she was already fully aware of the black cat's presence before it even leaped onto the stall counter beside her. As the feline batted an orange from the pile, it rolled to her feet, bumping against her ankle and lodging itself into the cracks of the cement. She glanced downwards and stooped low, snatching the fruit into her palm and admiring it with a small smile. Kiyomi shot the cat a playful glimpse before returning her full attention back to the old woman.

"These oranges look absolutely delicious. I refuse to leave this marketplace without one."

The old woman extended her palms with a bright smile as she expected her payment. A heavy coin pouch suddenly dropped into her cupped hands and a look of bewilderment dawned on her old, wrinkled features. She stared up in confusion, her pale blind eyes blinking rapidly.

"Excuse me, but this is far too much for one simple orange." She said in a quiet voice, extending her hands back outward persistently. Kiyomi simply shook her head and reached out to grasp the older woman's frail hands in her own, carefully guiding them shut around the pouch.

"It is a gift. Please, take it. May good fortunes be upon you, Yuki." Kiyomi murmured, releasing her hands and stepping away. The old woman looked startled at the fact that this stranger knew her name and she opened her mouth to respond, but could not find the words to speak. Kiyomi shot a glance at the black cat and motioned for it to follow her, disappearing back into the crowd. Before she knew it, the white-haired woman had vanished as if she were never there, accompanied by a mysterious black feline.

"I wasn't expecting such a cute visitor today. What brings you here?" Kiyomi purred in a soft voice. She walked alongside the cat and continued to twirl her oil-paper umbrella, leading them away to somewhere more private.

The set was almost finished, but Harian had moved from the seating a while ago. She was in her human form this time, leaning on a wall in the wings off the stage, beams from the tinted stage lights reflecting in her ebony hair and playing on the satin weave of her pinstripe vest.
She was watching the woman perform, this was the one she had been sent to see. She flipped the invitation like playing card across her knuckles, tossing it up, making it disappear and reappear again. If Zoya ever looked her way she would wink roguishly, as she waited for someone to tell her she wasn't supposed to be backstage at all.

Harian had not been given much instruction, only that this particular candidate would be very hard to find, but that it was imperative she do.
She had been stalking the forest for three days as a panther. Well, a melanistic leopard was what the nature documentary had called it. Jophiel loved watching those almost as much as he loved watching Doctor Who. Black leopards were much more common three thousand years ago, when the climate was different and the forests were lush and full and everywhere.
This patch of forest wasn't all that big, compared to then, so why was it so bloody hard to find one human boy?
Well, that was because he wasn't in the forest at all. Harian finally tracked the brat down on a bustling street in Rome, right by the tourist markets outside the Vatican city. It was a good thing she had ditched her panther form back in the forest.
She approached him in a different human form. This girl bore the delicate features of the People of the Nile, her hair was the deepest ebony and cascaded down her shoulders in unruly ringlets. Her skin was the colour of desert shadows, but her eyes were just the same, jewel-bright green as they so often were. She was wearing a red floral crop top, ripped jeans and Converse.
"You look lost." She said loudly to catch his attention. Her hands were folded behind her back and she leaned slightly forward with her shoulders raised in coy curiosity.

The clouds veiled the sun that day, crowning the skies with a dark, subdued shade of grey. Most of the crowd shuffled against one another with no real direction or flow, like the chaos of a beehive but without any of the same purpose, and the droning cacophony that they conjured up drowned out all sounds of the natural world. It was unlike anything Nero had ever seen or heard, so when the disguised djinn found him he was perched cross-legged atop one of the many statues littering street, wide eyes cast over the large human settlement.

He didn't particularly stand out that day; his state of dress had him covered from neck to ankles, a thin, slim fitting olive-colored long-sleeve draped over the waistline of a pair of seemingly hand woven trousers. The only thing that truly set him apart were his lack of shoes and the stark white of his hair - he'd mostly been looked over as yet another figure in the crowd until now.

The appearance of the girl was abrupt, drawing him out of his reverie with a jolt and sending him clumsily toward the ground, yet he somehow managed to land on the pads of his bare feet. Nero quickly stood upright and peered down at the curious girl. "I might be... I don't really know, yet." The words were accompanied by an inquisitive gaze that studied her closely. Never had he ever seen someone who was essentially the opposite shade of him, and the contrast of her eyes to the color of her skin tone was appalling. It took a great deal of composure to not question her about it, though his head did cock to one side and he visibly raised a hand to compare his much paler flesh to hers. He quickly pocketed both hands as soon as he realized what he was doing.

"I'm Nero," he murmured in the naturally soft tone that was his voice, one corner of his lips tugging upwards to display the ghost of a smile. "Who might you be?"

Harian hated New Delhi. She held a grand dislike for people, and here, it seemed, was most of them gathered, all crammed into a honking, stinking mess of stalls, carts, cars and tuktuks. It was a wonder anyone could find anything in that living mass they called a city.
Harian had taken the form of a crow and sat on a wire opposite a tall building. She had tried to sit lower to the street before, Jophiel's tracking charm having told her her next target was nearby, but there were children with water guns that had found her a very convenient target. Harian barely resisted the urge to set their trousers on fire.
It was only when she looked up that she had any luck at all. There was a man, sitting on the roof of one of the highest buildings in the area. He was eating a banana.
"Oh, you've got to be kidding me." Harian muttered under her breath.

At length she made a landing on the stonework beside him, hopping to a halt and looking up at him with beady black eyes. There was a deep emerald green reflected in those eyes, though no green to speak of up here, halfway to the heavens.

"You know, looking at you, it's hard to believe you're a God." The crow said flatly.
"I've got a note for you."
Out of thin air the crow was suddenly holding a small white card in her beak. She wondered if he would question why a djinn was here to deliver messages. It was a question she very often asked herself.

She had chosen a small, grassy park on a hill, overlooking the water far below. Harian strolled as her raven-haired self, complete with pinstripe vest, on a small cement path, watching Arys sitting on a decorative stone wall beside it, an ice cream cone in one hand. Time for a little fun.
Harian walked past, and at first, it looked like she had completely ignored the demon, but a sliver of her essence snaked behind Arys and tapped her opposite shoulder. Only then Did Harian move in for the switch: It was not an easy thing, substituting the simple card for the cone of ice cream, if it worked, Harian would be holding the cone, while Arys would be holding the invitation Harian had been ordered to give her.

Cold. Harian hated the cold, why was it cold here anyway? It was spring everywhere else in the Northern Hemisphere. Perhaps it had something to do with whom she was searching for.
The black panther stalked through the snow, its fur was twice as thick as Harian normally manifested, just to keep out the blighted chill.
The snow came halfway up her legs and Harian could feel the cold seeping in through the pads of her paws. Finally she gave up walking and sat down in a huff.
"Okay!" She called out to the trees. "I know you're watching me! Can you come and talk to me so I can hurry up and get out of here? I have something for you!"

Hayle walked around the cold snow, her footsteps light and barely noticeable as she silently follows this black panther who obviously can't withstand the cold. Not that Hayle noticed anyway, since she was practically the cause of this cold weather. But she stopped following this lone panther as it sat down in a huff, quite annoyed at something and then it shouted out at her which surprised her. Stepping out from the trees she smiled, her body wrapped up in fur like clothing and her markings glowing a soft blue as she moved closer. As the panther said they had something for her, her interest peaked. Moving closer she leaned over and looked at the panther curiously "A present? For me?" she asked in her sweet voice. She tried to keep her distance knowing the closer she got the colder this panther would get.

All eyes were on her as she spun and sung, letting the melody consume when she poured her heart and soul into her maybe a little too dramatic performance. Flashing winks and smirks to any she locked eyes with, sometimes even literally blowing them kisses, grinning in delight when her admirers either seemed flustered or surprised. Only one more song to go now, her chest was heaving with the exertion of her performance. One of the bars patrons she’d honed in on a few times had snuck away backstage during her last song, she didn’t know whether to be offended that the woman hadn’t at least stayed to see her finale but she brushed it off, carrying on and finishing to her satisfying applause and slow departure to the backstage.

Zoya’s sheer robe was waiting for her backstage on its usual peg, she slipped it on and gave herself something truly billowy to cover the turquoise dress that hugged her figure. Then she glanced at that sable haired woman again, her violet eyes narrowing in curiosity before fading as her mouth twisted into a smirk. “You shouldn’t be back here.” She spoke in her silken voice, eyebrows quirked in a feigned amusement. “That thing you’re flicking around doesn’t look like money, if you’re looking for my company it’s not free.” Zoya was refraining from kicking her out, maybe the stranger was lost, though she certainly didn’t look it.

The New York public Library on 5th Avenue was a grandiose building. Double Corinthian columns and hellenistic sculptures adorned the front facade, which sported three sets of oak double doors. A pair of lions lounged on pedestals just off the street, standing guard to the wealth of knowledge inside.
Harian gave the building a mildly-impressed glance. "Well it's no Alexandria." She stated finally.
The hero Jophiel wanted to enlist was certainly around here...somewhere, but for now Harian couldn't find him. She slipped into the building, footsteps echoing off the marble floors in the grand hallway that lead to the collections. She wondered if this library had a hidden occult section, like others did. There was one in London, Paris, Prague, Berlin, Rome, Cairo...and probably more than Harian hadn't been ordered to break into on one occasion or the other.

"Hmm, if I were a doorway to a secret section on the hidden magics of a physical plane...where would I be?" She mused quietly to herself as she strolled through the collections.
Then came a wood paneled wall with a small alcove, a stone statue of an owl perched on top of a pyramid, each facade sporting an open eye.
"Subtle." Harian said flatly, but her target was either already inside or would be heading that way, she was sure of it.

"Let's not tell her either way." Harian suggested, her smile widening. "I don't think she likes me very much."
Harian hated being equated with the temple god's small familiar. She was so much more than the lowly letter carrier she'd apparently been reduced to this time around.
"Yeah well you know, it's either this or being reduced to nothing but dust on the ethereal winds. Unless someone cans strike my name out of every single summoning book in this mud ball plane I'll get to keep coming back."
Then Anubis mentioned the curse and Harian's smile took on a satisfied edge. "Oh they didn't even get to use it. I really should thank you actually, that little trick set me free that time."
Nothing had given her greater pleasure than to watch her power-hungry master be devoured by the curse. If only he had created the contract to order her to warn him of things like that. Oh well. Without the summoner's magic holding the binding in place, Harian was free, and she could have wreaked as much destruction as she wanted before going. It wasn't her style. That city was lucky the stupid magician hadn't summoned a marid or something worse, because there might not have been anything left.
Anubis knew how this worked. He had helped her, so by honour she was bound to do him a service in return, but there was no way she would ever bring it up. She didn't like owing people favours.
"Right well, you have the card. I'll be on my way."

The sun beat down on him, but the slightest breeze ruffled his hair and open button-down. Falarion took another bite of his banana while curiously peering down at the human traffic beneath him. Such a curious group humans were, what with their marketplaces and noisy mannerisms. One of his favorite aspects of the humans here was how colorful their life was, though. Despite the chaos and the noise, the silks being sold in a few stalls and the clothes the people wore filled his eyes with a vibrancy he rarely saw in other places. Sure, there was more brown and dullness thanks to the architecture of this place and usually thanks to the dust that occasionally blinded him, but still. He really enjoyed the upbeat and friendliness of most of the people here. It was not uncommon for him to interact with the neighborhood children and play. He did not take too much serious in his own life and thus, he found himself messing around more than anything else. It was a fun and fulfilling kind of life to have.

Hearing a fluttering near him, Falarion glanced over to see a crow joining him. Almost immediately, he could see a far greater intelligence in its green eyes that no normal crow had. His curious head tilt quickly ended once he decided to take another bite of his banana, though. While chewing, he calmly listened to the crow's complaint and then was very curious to hear that it had a note for him. He had not received a message from a bird in a very long time, if ever. He did not tend to talk to many other deities or otherworldly beings.

Finishing off his banana in an irritatingly patient manner, Falarion then grinned at the bird and said, "You know, looking at you, it's hard to believe you're not a crow." Finding his own joke to be absolutely hilarious, Falarion began laughing before he carefully took the note from the crow's beak. He glanced down at it and began to read, wondering if the crow would stick around to keep him company or if that would be that.

Gabriel absentmindedly drummed his fingers across the top of the polished oak desk in front of him, frowning deeply as he poured over yet another old, dusty tome. He had been sitting here for hours now, and was still no closer to finding what he was looking for. For what must have been the millionth time that day, he sighed, irritated.
"I hate this city. Every time I come here, someone is trying to end the world."
His voice was muffled, the dozens of books and scrolls he had assembled acting like an insulator for sound. He stood, stretched his arms and back, and walked over to one of the large shelves lining the walls. He traced his finger across the spines of several books and journals until settling on an old leather-bound tome, several inches thick with no discernible title or markings on the cover. He paced back and forth in front of the desk, paying little attention to his surroundings as he thumbed through the yellowing pages.

"Is it really too much to ask for someone to have written 'An Idiots Guide To Ancient Evil Assholes'?" He asked to no one in particular, thinking he was alone in the dimly lit confines of the only useful section of the library. He sat back down, the journal carefully placed on the desk, pages filled with thin, neat writing in what was most likely a form of ancient Greek. He scanned the pages intently, facing away from the direction of the front entrance. He finally settled on one page in particular and pulled out his phone to snap a few pictures before continuing his research.

"What was the point of that?" Harian genuinely didn't understand. There was no use being nice to the fleshbag denizens of this cold, wet plane. More often than not they were petty and selfish, and would use you as soon as they got a hint of what they could gain from you.
"You bring me here Kyomi-san." This was one of the very rare occasions where Harian was polite. She wasn't a fool, a nine-tailed servant of Inari was no joke, and her pure fox-fire would make short work of a little Djinn like Harian.
"I have a letter...from an angel."

She looked at him, properly this time. He didn't seem like a caster, he didn't have much of a magic aura at all, yet Jophiel was adamant Harian see this boy safely to him. That made her curious. She just could not figure this one out.
He had asked for her name. Harian did not give her name lightly. Anyone who had her full name could make a binding charm, could steal her away from her own dimension and shackle her to this forsaken world. She dodged the question.
"You're lost in more ways than one. I can tell. But...I can get you un-lost, if you want."

Hayle took the card out of the panthers paw and looked down at it with an eyebrow raised "A band?" she asked curiously before sitting down on the ground with her legs crossed looking at the panther at eye level "And an angel wants me to join? You sure you didn't eat some nasty mushrooms on the way here?" she chuckled as she asked such a ridiculous question. But as the panther asked her to tone down the cold she rubbed the back of her neck, the blue glow of her markings dimming and becoming just like tattoos on her body "Sorry about that, I don't even realise the effect I have on the weather some days." as she spoke she changed the temperature surrounding them, getting less and less cold as she focused on the cold she was emitting. "So about this band and this angel? Why would an angel want a demon to join?" she asked very curiously on why an angel sent a djinn to come and deliver a message to her.

There was no hesitation as he prepared to stammer an apology and defend himself, the red rising to his cheeks out of shame, but it was it was silenced before it started by the abrupt flourish and withdrawal of the card. Clearly she wasn't planning to play by the rules; it was more as though she was toying with him like a human would with a pet. Nero hadn't enough interactions to know the norm, but this one was clearly unique.

"In some cultures, it's considered impolite not to answer a question," he stated simply, not wanting to push the subject but gladly bringing attention to it. The semi-crooked smile returned less formal and far more relaxed than before, and his gaze shifted from the girl, to the owl-backed card, finally settling on her after the brief stint of silence. He supposed that playing along wouldn't hurt.

Wordlessly, the boy rolled forward onto the ball of one foot with an arm and hand extended toward the card. It was an extremely simple, clement attempt to obtain it that could easily be avoided - he simply didn't know if snatching it from her would be wise, yet.
