Shadowhunters protect the world of mundane/human people, who are also called mundanes or "mundies", from dark forces beyond their world. Shadowhunters, also known as Nephilim, are a secretive race of beings who are humans born with angel blood. They have fought demons and have lived alongside Downworlders in the Shadow World for well over a thousand years, creating their own culture and civilization within human society. They are trained to fight demons from an early age, but their numbers are dwindling; the only way to create more Shadowhunters is with a magical chalice called the Mortal Cup, one of the titular instruments.
