Sebastian Gallax

Shadow

Akin to a Fool
Character Name: Sebastian Gallax
Character Aliases: Siphon
Gender: Male
Age Bracket: Early Twenties
Character Description: Sebastian
is an even six feet tall with dark brown eyes and hair. He keeps his hair trimmed short on the sides and a bit longer on top. When he does let his hair grow out, it is very wavy and eventually starts to curl. He has a muscular build, but is by no means bulky. His typical 'crime-fighting' look is a black bomber jacket with white X's stitched to the inside of the collar, black jeans or cargo pants, and boots. On a normal day, his clothing style is much the same, usually a hoodie and jeans or sweatpants. He also has a small tattoo on the inside of his wrist that is a symbol of protection.

Personality: Sebastian is a charismatic person who usually has no trouble fitting in. He acts very open with everyone he meets and knows how to gain people's trust. He is very empathic and always tries to make the people around him comfortable. Despite a tendency to babble when he is in big groups, he knows when to shut up and listen when someone needs a shoulder to lean on. That said, he can be a bit naive and clueless on occasion, given his sheltered childhood. He first instinct is to trust everyone he meets until they give him a reason not to; however, the moment he becomes suspicious of someone, he will give them the cold shoulder until his suspicions are either confirmed or proved wrong. Of course, if those suspicions are wrong, he will do anything to make up for it. Sebastian also tends to be a bit of a hopeless romantic; while he doesn't really see himself falling for anyone, he has a bad habit of trying to play matchmaker for all his friends.
Mutant Powers: Pain Absorption- Sebastian can absorb the pain of the people around him. He doesn't have to be touching someone to siphon their pain, but he can't reach people more than a city block away. While he feels others' pain he can channel that pain in several ways. He can send blasts of pain at his enemies and, if it's concentrated enough (usually through physical contact), it can be enough to make them pass out; he can create a sort of barrier around his mind that defends him from mental attacks, and possibly even direct physical attacks although he hasn't accomplished that yet. He can also channel pain to heighten his senses, strength, speed or stamina, however this is limited and he usually has to absorb too much pain to make it these particular enhancements worthwhile. By absorbing someone's pain he can heal them, in a way. Their wounds won't heal, but they won't have to deal with the pain from the wounds either. Most of the time, he draws on others' mental pain which is more powerful than physical pain.

Non Mutant abilities: Combat and weapons training- His faction trained him for several years in multiple forms of combat. He is most skilled with a bow and arrows or a staff. He is highly intelligent and learns quickly, although he doesn't have a formal high school degree (he is self-taught in most subjects). He is highly skilled at fixing machines, cars in particular, as it used to be a hobby of his.

Weaknesses character flaws, social disadvantages: Due to the nature of Sebastian's power, he can only use it for a certain amount of time before he needs a break and he can only absorb so much pain at once before he has to expel it. Also, if no one around him is in any pain, his power is mostly useless.
Equipment: His bomber jacket and a pair of earphones that he always keeps in the inside pocket. He also has a pocket knife with a serrated edge inside his boot. Whenever he can get his hands on a small weapon- usually a small gun or short sword/knife -he keeps it in his bomber jacket's hidden makeshift holster.
Previous History: Sebastian's powers developed when he was quite young; too young to realize how dangerous it could be to openly be a mutant. The first time him mother saw him use his powers, she panicked and had the typical reaction; calling him a freak and threatening to turn him in. His father convinced her to let Sebastian live with them until he was old enough to make it on his own. While she agreed, she hardly looked at Sebastian after that, let alone act like his mother. However his father, while clueless about mutants, continued to treat him like a son- even trying to help him control his powers. Sebastian always looked up to the Avengers and Professor Xavier and their visions of a better world. When the Monolith gathered more power, his mother reported Sebastian as a mutant and they came to take him away. Luckily his father knew a man who was starting a faction that kept young mutants safe. He stayed with the faction for several years and they trained him in combat, how to control his powers, and other things that could keep him alive when he went out on his own. However, the faction leader turned out to be undercover for the Monolith and had most of the faction members arrested. Sebastian managed to escape in time, but that betrayal pushed him to want to protect people instead of hiding until it was all over.

Character Goals, Aspirations, & an interpretation of your faction's dogma: Sebastian wants to avenge the murders of his childhood heroes and rescue as many persecuted mutants as possible. He also wants to help make his heroes' visions of a better world come true. In the end, he wants there to be peace and for the world to return to how it once was; minus the discrimination against mutants.

-Sebastian's faction started out as a safe haven for young mutants who lost their homes; keeping them safe and training them until they could hide out on their own. They protected each other and sought out other mutants that needed help. When the Monolith started to gain power, the faction moved underground and started combat training in order to take down the Monolith. However, the faction leader and a few other members (who weren't mutants) had secretly been planning to turn the mutants they recruited over to the government from the start.

What themes and plots are you hoping to experience in the game: I'd like to see the development of the characters as they come together and decide that it's their job to save the world. I also think it would be interesting to see how the broken world affects everyone differently.
Writing Sample:

Sebastian shivered under the thread-bare blanket as the cold seeped through the mattress beneath him. He grudgingly opened his eyes and scanned his surroundings with a soft sigh. The walls, ceiling, and floor were a roughly cut stone, as if he was in a cave. However it stretched on and on, too big to be a cave, with cots and tables scattered haphazardly. There was a constant dripping sound and the floor was wet and grimy. It wasn't exactly homey. Sebastian rolled off the mattress, careful not to step on any out-stretched hands or feet. Someone was snoring, the sound echoing slightly in the massive space. Finally he made it to a small hallway that led forked into the men and women's bathrooms respectively. He ran his hand through his hair and turned on the facet. A pathetic stream of water coughed out, then sputtered and disappeared. He gave a sigh of resignation and went back to the main hall. Just before he got there, he heard a muffled cry and what sounded like an army of heavy footsteps. He quickly reached out with his power to see if someone was in pain and received a staggering amount; too much to be an accident. He bent down low and skirted the walls of the main hall. While it was mostly dark, flashlights hung from several places in the ceiling and he was careful to avoid those spots.

He reached the back of the room, farthest away from the main entrance and started nudging people awake. "Something is wrong. Get up. Follow me." He said quietly, watching impatiently as his fellow mutants dragged themselves out of their beds. After what felt like a lifetime, they all got the memo that they were under attack and began pushing for the secret exit. "Back there! Those vermin are heading for the back exit!!" Someone yelled and Sebastian gasped. All panic forgotten, he stopped and looked back. Sure enough, in the spotlight of one of the flashlights, the faction leader stood, giving the intruders directions. "Sebastian, let's go." Someone said, tugging on his sleeve. "No, just go." Sebastian said, seemingly mesmerized by the sight of his former mentor. "Dr. Collins? Dr. Collins!?" He said, raising his voice. "What are you doing?" The man turned and smiled. "Sebastian! My star pupil. Did I really have you fooled? Incredible. You didn't really think I would want to protect filth like you and your mutant friends, did you?" Sebastian stood frozen for a moment as he tried to comprehend what the man was saying.

He snapped out of it when several of the intruders- soldiers, by the looks of them -came at him with guns. He ran for the secret tunnel, shoving his rampaging thoughts aside as one thought took over; escape.

When he reached open air, he was met with absolute chaos. The mutants were in an all-out war with whoever had attacked them; screams echoing off the hills as the soldiers gained the advantage. Dr. Collins must have told the soldiers about where the secret exit led, he realized. Sebastian quickly absorbed the pain of the nearest mutants, stumbling slightly before the familiar rush of pain settled into a distant ache. He let out a blast-wave when several soldiers rushed towards him; he didn't wait to watch them crumple to the ground. Instead, he ran for the distant tree-line, vaguely aware of several other mutants doing the same. Somehow he reached the forest without being stopped, but he kept running until eventually his legs gave out. He gasped for air, dragging himself under the roots of a massive oak tree for shelter. He tried to absorb the pain from the distant battle, but he was too tired to reach that far. Instead, he concealed himself with leaves and branches and let himself pass out.
