Nearly 1000 years before the plot, humans found an ancient warp gate beyond Neptune that could send them to other systems or even galaxies. The first colonization mission was ill fated as there was a malfunction in the warp gate that sent the colony ships far off into an unknown system. The people on the side of the Sol system couldn't trace where the colony ships had ended up. Meanwhile the colony ships ended up in a system that consisted of a massive dyson ring surrounding a sun. Within the dyson ring was land and water, however the total area of the habitable part of the ring could be estimated to be over a trillion square kilometers, more than 2000 times the area of earth. A scan revealed that there was no detectable sapient life in the dyson ring, however many animals and plants resembling those from earth, both usual and mythical. There was however no contact to Earth nor was there a detectable warp gate within the system. Otherwise in the system there was one planet within the dyson rings radius and five outside of it. None of the planets were habitable however, with both rocky planets being too hot or too cold for life.
The colony ships ended up settling on the dyson ring. Many tried to access the more mechanical parts of the dyson ring but the doors they found wouldn't budge. Within a week, many of the colonists had because mysteriously ill. The illness subsided after about two weeks, but 20% of the colonists died from it. After several more weeks, some colonists found out they could use "magic" at an elemental level, creating fire in the palm of their hands. The scientists among the colonists tried to see if the illness had anything to do with it and discovered nano machines within the colonists blood, however upon realizing the presence of the nano machines, the nano machines wiped part of the memory of the colonists to mask the awareness of their presence. Additionally, most colonists would lose knowledge of modern technology and have to live in a near medieval state.
Generations have passed and nearly three billion have descended from the original 100,000 colonists. However not even 10% of the world has been explored yet due to it's sheer vastness. Each settlement is build around a temple which is built on one of the doors that lead to the inner part of the ring. Every year, two people from every settlement are sacrificed to the doors. This is the only time the doors open. No one knows where they go. But the reality is, the ancient administration system and sentient AI of the dyson ring needs workers to maintain the ring. It cannot produce any robots to do the work anymore as the ring is so old that many parts have just stopped working and have fallen into disrepair.
The ones sacrificed, are basically brainwashed and cybernetically enhanced by the administration system, usually having information uploaded to them so they know what to maintain and how to maintain it. They still retain an amount of free will and can socialize within the opposite side cities of the ring, but they wont remember their previous lives or will remember it differently. There are four levels of within the ring maintenance people: Workers/Drones, Guardians, The subadministration and The Ring AI. Workers/Drones do work humanly possible. Guardians made sure that no one went rogue, do work too dangerous or difficult for drones and deal with matters above ground (such as ensuring that the people there didnt start perpetual war or advance too far technologically). The subadministration is a number of minds hooked together to maintain the computational systems of the ring and to supplement the ring AI's computing power. Overseeing it all was the Ring AI ensuring it's own further existence and making sure the people above ground prosper and dont kill each other too much.
Basically, above ground is a fantasy world with magic, dragons and stuff, while below ground are cyborgs keeping the place together and keeping watch over the above ground.
