Bio: Steve was adopted when he was just a baby by a married couple, Zeek and Beth Freeling, who wanted a child very much. They treated him with as much love and care as if Beth herself had given birth to him, even after they had a son and two daughters of their own. He is unaware of his being adopted and wonders what the notes he's been finding left for him could mean. He is a third grade English language arts teacher. He has an eight-year-old daughter whose abusive mother he holds a restraining order against.

Bio: Clarke was adopted when she was just a baby by an evil chain-smoking woman named Mary Lue Heymann who told her every day until she was 16 years old that she hated Clarke and wished she was never born. She would leave Clarke alone in the apartment with no food hoping she would die. Clarke knew she wanted to grow up to be nothing like this woman. She was eager to let Clarke know she wasn't hers. When Clarke was 16, the woman named Mary Lue, who had been the closest thing she had to a mother, keeled over and died; Clarke figured it was due to all the cigarettes she'd smoked. Not long before, her adoptive uncle taught her how to shoot a gun; long before that, her three adoptive brothers taught her how to fistfight if anyone ever messed with her. She works at a low-paying personal care home where her three unruly male clients are afraid of her. She has a seven-year-old son. Due to her adoptive "mother" having been so vocal about the matter, Clarke knows she's adopted and wonders if the clues she's been finding could have something to do with her real parents.
