He's happy to cause any mayhem he can in the meantime. He might also have a high paying buyer for any SHIELD/Avengers secrets he can find when he's not busy toying with Logan.

Backstory: Victor was born in the early 1800's in the northern canadian provinces. His mutant powers emerged when he was a young boy, eight or so, while he was fighting over a piece of pie with a cousin. Growing long claws, the wrestling match over the pie ended with the other boy dead. His father, Thomas Logan (the town drunk) told the town he found the boy in the woods, his wounds obviously inflicted by some kind of animal.

He then took his son and chained him down in their cellar.

Routinely he went down and before feeding his 'demonic/possessed' son, he would tear his fingertip fangs and claws out with a pair of pliers. His mutation provided him with a healing factor, so they always grew back and his father always returned. During a debate between his mother and father about killing Victor, Victor interfered and his father accidentally shot and killed his mother. Victor stayed in the basement for another year before he wisened up and found a way to file his claws down.

With the claws 'gone' and only fangs to deal with, his father decided his son was getting better, having been purged of the devil enough times. He went back to helping his father with his ground keeping duties for the Howletts and never spoke of his developing powers, that he would fall and cut himself only to see it stitch up, or that he could hear and smell everything around him. But Victor would be forever jaded and warped from his time spent in that dark cellar being tortured by his father.

Quiet around town and judged for his father's mockery, his only companion besides his continually abusive father, was the young son of the lord of the estate, James Howlett. The young boy was constantly sick, and also had few companions, and quickly became attached to Victor. Victor, for his part, didn't feel instantly bothered by him and so he tolerated the friendship and the cheerful boy. James' father, John Howlett was not a fan of the friendship, and did not think very much of Victor or his dark attitude. He did not want a poor model for his son, but with the nature of young James' condition, he didn't want to upset him by removing Victor. So he allowed, begrudgingly, to have the boy around.

One night, while he stayed late with his friend on his request, he heard his father come to the manor in a drunken rage. Nothing abnormal to him, and assuming he was to be punished for being in John Howlett's home, someone his father seemed to despise over all others, even Victor. But with his enhanced hearing, he realized his father was calling for not for him, but for the lady of the house, James' distant mother Elizabeth.

The night ended with many realizations. He was not alone in the world, his sick friend was not only his blood- a brother- he was also like him. Different. Victor was not possessed by the devil, as his father had told him so many times. More importantly to Victor, he watched James do what he was never strong enough to do for himself... he killed Victor's father. He realized his and James claws made them powerful, and had given him control over his life. When James' went running off, Victor stayed only long enough to see Elizabeth pick up Thomas shotgun and shoot herself in the head.

He raced off after James and they formed a tight bond from then on in. They went through many wars together, realizing the years did not affect them and Victor found himself constantly testing what he could come back from. He never found a limit. He promised to protect James, no matter what, and felt resentfully indebted to his brother for killing their father Thomas. He would begin to see his inability to kill his tormenting father as a weakness. He also began to see himself more and more as different from all others around him, continually being pushed out of society for his strange features. James always came with him until one day he did not. His brother walked out on Victor in Africa after he grew tired of Stryker's methods. Victor never forgave him, although he would never admit he cared long enough to admit it hurt him deeply.

Many wars later, a run in with the Weapon-X program and its head William Stryker, and his abusive childhood would all work to transform Victor into the mutant he was today... Sabretooth. Merciless, sadistic, powerful and uncaring... the sociopathic Victor sees himself as the very top of the foodchain. Untouchable and unlike any other human or mutant. He sees himself only as an animal, who works on his basic instincts, whether it is true or not. He works as a mercenary, feeding his blood lust, and desire for destruction, while also making him rich enough to do as he pleases in the world.

So this is the mean, savage Sabretooth rather than the reformed, nicer one he is of late? Accepted.

Yes, exactly, Wolverine hasn't died so that didn't affect him, and he hasn't been mind altered at some point and retconned back to realize he can be that way. Or realize the benefits of that. But of course he can always travel down the course later if we want! :)
