Isern was all to glad to get out of Oobleck's class, he wasn't a fan of history, for how could the past possibly affect the future? In his opinion, it was the here and now that mattered, and here and now they needed to learn as much about the Grimm as possible and hone their combat skills. Which was exactly what the next class would do. And while he was a little embarrassed by the simplicity of his weapon, Cwellere, he figured that would just lead to people underestimating him. Because why would you ever worry about a man that brought an axe to a gun/sword fight? Well, once Cwellere takes a bit out of them, they'd start to worry.

He figured this would be a more combat oriented class, but he did not expect Ms. Goodwitch to immediately throw him and his team against another. That other team being the one they had sat with during lunch. But he didn't really care for the rest of the other team, for his eyes immediately locked onto Raine, the one that had unexpectedly turned his head to the side because she was offended by him eating. "Oh, I'm going to enjoy this," he murmurs as he shadows the tall girls position on her team, making sure there was as little distance between him and her as possible. And so he stood across from her, axe ready with one hand below the head to allow for him to quickly block, deflect, or grapple before sliding his hand down to deliver the devastating blow the axe was known for.

Between her height and her spear, Raine managed to quickly close the distance, quicker than Isern had expected. He raised his axe to deflect the rocket thrust, but he was not fast enough. His aura flashed black as he absorbed the brunt of the attack, but all it did was cause him to slide back across the ground, him refusing to be knocked over with the first attack of the year. He shook of the blow, his aura flickering once more, though this time with a tinge of orange to it. He needed to close the gap between him and her, get nice and close so that spear can't really be used. And so, mind set, he took off towards Raine, his stance and steps wide, this time expecting her to once more come at him and to actually deflect the blow this time.

Out of all things he speculated to be the answer, he never thought that such a counter-intuitive idea would come to be one of the leading factors to the great war. Wouldn't banning such self-expression just generate more negative energy and attract even more grimm? Well, the past is in the past he supposed...

Professor Goodwitch turned out to be quite a fierce character upon his first introduction to her, but that should have been expected considering her position as the combat instructor. She wasted no time in issuing a battle between Cronan's own team, CRMS and team OSEI, much to his shock. He felt his heart skip a beat as he realized that as the leader he would be the one to coordinate their attack and strategize a way of besting their opponents. He tried to calm himself down and focus on the task at hand, first things first he needed to create a plan but had little to no background info on the other team he didn't even have an idea as to what their semblances might be so the only thing he really had to go off of was their builds and weapons. He glanced over at his teammates one last time, taking note of Raine's fixation on Isern and sighed before they all walked onto the stage.

"Spinel, you handle Oceanos and Matte make sure to stay on Sumire. Raine... the moment I see you losing too much ground on Isern I'll be jumping in to help whether you-"

"Begin"

"I'll be the one to go after Ebony and- remember we're supposed to be a team!" Cronan yelled out as he drew his bow and prepared to fire.

Oh... okay, I guess that's what Professor Oobleck meant... Color as a concept was of course especially important to her interests, and one of the things she had delighted in learning were how people's names ended up relating to their respective hues and shades. It made life just that slight bit more interesting, knowing that all the various colors of the world were reflected in its people, and it gave her ample opportunity to test her limits of medium blending whenever she attempted to mix pigments to form just the right tone to paint someone with. A painful memory came flooding back, and she recalled twelve parts black, one blue, one metallic gray; a particularly dark mixture that she would likely never use again, and for the umpteenth time that day, her heart fell, her shoulders slumping as her head lay flat on the desk. It was just as well that Oobleck released the class shortly after that question as it was unlikely that Sumire would be absorbing much else past that.

~~~
Dragging herself behind Oceanos to the final class of the day, as the doors opened to the open space of the amphitheater, the grandeur of the hall hit her all at once, its sense of scale and gravity clear in its construction, purpose designed to draw all attention to the central stage. As such, she was rightly completely mortified as team OSEI was one of the first to be ordered upon it, her nerves immediately beginning to fray as she knew she was about to be put in the spotlight for the entire class to see. With a fearful glance at Oceanos as he looked over, she silently followed her new companions down the narrow stairwell to the stage, drawing her scroll to allow Professor Goodwitch to demonstrate how to enable and utilize their combat aura monitors. As the listing for hers came on line, she watched as her bar filled up just the same as the others, though she knew it meant anything but an equal level of protection as the others. There were no shortage of heavy weapons she'd seen students with that would smash her fragile aura into smithereens, and very likely her ribcage as well. She still wasn't completely certain how to best handle massive hits like that, and she had a very bad feeling she'd be on the receiving end of more than a few in this training class for the express purpose of teaching her.
With a brain still full of static and a body weak from hunger, she deployed Kofude in rifle form, checking its magazine and preparing herself for the worst. What do I even do? Needless to say, an answer failed to form before the fateful words to begin were spoken; she would have to react to whatever came.
Kingdom of Vale – Vale city – Beacon Academy - Amphitheater – Cronan, Matte, Raine, Spinel; Ebony, Isern, Sumire, Oceanos
Oceanos felt like Goodwitch’s command had not even rung out before the fight was already raging. Raine had – unsurprisingly – not waited a second longer than necessary before storming towards Isern, rainbow-colored hair wafting behind her. With an explosion of the tips of her spear, she had closed in. Oceanos just saw how the strike connected and Isern’s aura flickered black, before his attention was drawn to Cronan, the leader of team CRMS, who yelled:
"I'll be the one to go after Ebony and- remember we're supposed to be a team!"
Oceanos thought that maybe, as his own team’s leader, he should also say something, but he had no idea what, and a moment later, Ebony had already reacted to the hail of incoming arrows by using one of her weapons – in whip form – to hit some arrows out of the air while aiming her other weapon, still as a revolver, at Cronan and returning the fire. A moment later she had started to close in on him, still shooting while now also bringing her whip down in an extended motion, letting it slice downwards at her opponent.
Oceanos looked at the tall silverish-haired guy – Matte, if he was not mistaken -, who, with a wolfish grin, stalked towards Sumire, holding in his hand a dagger which was in the process of elongating into some type of sword. Before he could react to this, however, Spinel, the other chakram wielder, had opened fire on him. Shit, it shot through his head. With a gesture, he sent Scylla and Charybdis out. The two weapons hovered in front of him like an 8, then started to spin each around her own center and also both around their common center to provide a shield against the pale bluish-white energy bullets aimed at him – was this hard-light dust? Spinel was only using one of his chakrams in this shooty form, though, and proceeded to throw the other towards Oceanos who managed to dodge the attack. Spinel did not seem impressed, however, extending his hand to the side and – what the hell had happened? With a flash of violet aura, the weapon had materialized next to him, even though not a moment earlier it had been skidding over the floor of the stage behind Oceanos. Did Spinel have some sort of teleportation thing going on?
Oceanos thought quickly. The other guy obviously had a possibility to use his weapons as submachine guns, which put him at an advantage over a distance, and he also seemed to have no problem throwing and recalling them like Oceanos could. With a bit of luck, however, this would mean that he was not so experienced in close combat…
Still rotating around each other, Scylla and Charybdis started to zoom forward like some helicopter shield, Oceanos running behind them to close in on Spinel. When he was only three or so steps away, thought, his weapons suddenly slowed. What…? He felt a resistance, as if the air around his chakrams had become liquid. Spinel took a step to the side, again throwing his one chakram while continuing to spew dust bullets from the other. Looking grim, Oceanos decided that the other guy did not have the only semblance that could affect the fight. Telekinetically grabbing the incoming chakram, he sent it flying off while managing to reposition himself so that his own chakrams, still slowed, were floating between the two of them. Because they were rotating so slowly, they made for a much less effective shield than usually, so that several of the projectiles connected with him, but still some were blocked. Spinel grunted, again rematerializing his chakram in his hand. A moment later, Oceanos felt the resistance around his weapons vanish and had full control over them again. Sending both out to attack Spinel from two sides, he closed in, taking the moment he had gained to flash a glance at the others. Raine and Isern were locked in fierce combat, Matte was about to bring down a mighty swing on Sumire – had his weapon transformed again? Now it was a large two-handed sword –, and Ebony was actually swinging through the air, one of her serrated whips jammed into some place above them, her other revolver raining bullets at Cronan from the air.
The next second, one of Spinel’s chakrams missed Oceanos’ face by barely a millimeter. He sighed inwardly. Back to his own fight…
Raine Olympia
Raine grinned as she felt the satisfying impact of her spear against isern’s aura coated body. But her eyes narrowed, the flash of black didn’t escape her as he slid backwards from the impact of her spear. He recovered and this time his aura seemed to flash orange. Raine drew her spear back and returned to her guarded stance, shield forward and her spear resting in the groove.
Around them, the others had commenced their own engagements, but in the opening fray, Raine didn’t have reason to concern herself with the others. It would take a little before the focus was shifted to her and Isern, and besides, her team knew this was something of a “grudge” match and shouldn’t interfere.
Isern took off towards her his stance was open, practically baiting her to try and attack him. Raines grin twisted in contempt, he will regret that, she thought. Stepping forward she thrust her spear out again, though keeping it balanced on the groove of her shield. As expected he was ready for it and deflected the blow, but this wasn’t like the single powerful thrust she’d done before.
Raine quickly withdrew her spear again and thrust once more, again and again as Raine thrust her spear repeatedly at him, using her shield to leverage it made the act much easier. However, it wasn’t a wild and reckless move and if someone could grow used to it became predictable. Thusly Raine was caught off guard when suddenly Isern seized just below the head of her spear. Raine only realised it when she met resistance when trying to draw back her spear again.
In her moment of confusion, Isern pulled on the spearhead and Raine was pulled forward off balance. Recovering quickly she activated the lock switch on Stytryx and Isern simply started pulling the spear out into its whip shape. As the spear extended in his grasp 4 dust spikes popped out at that end of the spear. Raine smiled wildly.
“Nice try, but you’re dumber than you look!” She jeered as she flicked another switch on the handle of Stytryx. There was a burst of energy and an explosion of lightning and ice blasted out from the dust spikes around Isern. Raine then ran forward, closing the 2m gap between them, and rammed into Isern with her shield, hopefully catching him off guard via the explosion of dust.
Soviet Panda Soviet Panda
Easily dodging the predictable spear thrusts, Isern attempted to close the distance with Raine. However, she was not dumb enough to merely sit in one place, backing up to keep herself just frustratingly outside of his reach. However, swinging his axe was not the only thing he could do in this situation. And so, after one of her numerous strikes, his hand shot out and managed to just grab the spear. Pulling back, he was satisfied that she was pulled off balance. But again she was faster than he was, and before he could capitalize on it the spear had turned into a whip, exploded, and a shield was shoved into his gut. Her taunting was also not much help to his quickly evaporating temper.
He recovered quickly from having just been charged by a much larger object than he was, and used his size to his advantage. Once more grabbing his opponent, this time by the arm, he slips out to one side, tripping her up as he did so and heaving with his arm to complete the throw and knock her on the ground. The momentum Raine had and the force Isern had used for the throw was enough for the gargantuan woman to toppled. His opponent on the ground and no where to run, and this time he would show her the striking power with which the dane axe was feared for. Sliding his hand down and bringing his axe back as if to begin chopping lumber, Isern sends the biting axe head crashing down atop his opponent.
Cronan reacted quickly and rolled out of the way of the incoming flurry of bullets. From his experiences with them, whips had always been one of the most annoying weapons to deal with or defend against and when paired up with something as simple firearm could make it nigh impossible to effectively close in on an opponent, even with his bow he found it hard to find an opening that he could use to get pass her defenses due to the unnerving accuracy she had with that whip.
Good thing she uses a revolver though, he thought to himself after dodging out of the way of a strike from Ebony's wipe, all I need to do is figure out if it holds the standard five or six bullets they usually do or maybe even more. He'd then use the brief moment she would need to reload to launch his attack and hopefully move in closer then he would able to put his semblance to use, unless maybe she could somehow reload with only one hand and hold him off with the other but he doubted she was that good.
He dodged out of the way of a shot, and another, and... there! he reached into his quiver, pulling out and firing arrow after arrow in quick succession but at various different angles. While Ebony was able to deflect a good number of them, a few managed to get past her whip and land near her, one of which ended up being an arrow infused with ice dust that went off a moment later creating a giant spike of ice that she narrowly managed to dodge. She reloaded in one quick action and by the time Cronan had his bow trained on her again she had already her launched whip high into the air latching it onto connected to the ceiling. The whip then retracted pulling her into the air where she would take aim at Cronan and fire.
He immediately took of running, doing his best to avoid the rain of bullets while also trying to return fire but Ebony's current position made it diffiult him to do that. He had to remove that whip of hers out of the equation somehow or at least its versalitily.
With the issuance from Professor Goodwitch, the fight began in earnest, and before Sumire had time to think, she spotted a gray-haired streak close towards her, the weapon in his hand already telescoping from just a small dagger to a full sized sword. The violet haired girl attempted to snap-fire a brst of rounds at him to get him to back off, but her fatigue made her reactions slow, and the growling void that was her stomach did little to bolster her already questionable Aura reserves, limiting her use of Flow to prevent her guard from completely dropping. As such, rounds that would have put a serious hurt had they connected instead went harmlessly wide, and Matte advanced at an unhalting pace, forcing Sumi to switch Kofude over to blade mode just as he pounced, his blade just barely being deflected away from her head with a wild swing from her own. Oh gods, this isn't good, why am I doing this, why am I here, there's no way I can win this! She glanced around to see if there was anywhere she could retreat and hide momentarily, but the flat plane of the amphitheater provided little cover; this domain was designed for two teams to clash straight into each other until only a single one was left. What do I do? A second swing went sailing by her right ear as she instinctively dodged, more out of fear than proper defense, and she stumbled backwards for a few steps before coming to a halt. Without much intent, she reared back and thrust her own sword forward, its point rapidly deflected before Matte followed up with a strike of his own; this one connected, and Sumi could feel the impact on her lower ribs as she was driven back, her Aura the only thing preventing her from now possessing a wicked gash.
Why, why??? Sumi whined internally as her stance visibly shifted in response to the pain. She lashed out with a sloppy cut at Matte's shoulder, again the blade being caught and deflected, this time throwing Sumi off-balance. Rather than attempt to recover as before, she pulled together what little energy she had to tuck into a roll, Matte's sword whipping past the air she previously occupied a second before as she came up with her blade outstretched in a desperate attempt to make space while she reoriented. I can't even hit him at this point, why am I even doing this?
Kingdom of Vale – Vale city – Beacon Academy - Amphitheater – Cronan, Matte, Raine, Spinel; Ebony, Isern, Sumire, Oceanos
Explosions and loud noises of metal hitting metal rang from the tangle that was Raine and Isern, indicating that their fight was still raging. In between catching Spinel’s chakrams with his own, Oceanos found time to throw a quick glance towards the other combatants. Cronan was dodging Ebony’s bullet rain, but it seemed that at least some were hitting their mark. The next moment, she had, with a sweeping motion that made a sort of wave travel upwards along her whip, freed the whip’s head from the ceiling and jumped down towards her opponent. For a second, Oceanos wondered if she shouldn’t transform her revolver into a whip as well to try and block Cronan’s path, but then he flinched when the girl landed harder than she probably had intended. With a curse, she stomped her foot on the ground to free it of the small ice crystal that had surrounded it – Cronan must have managed to somehow freeze her foot. She swapped the modes of her two weapons, retracting her whip into a revolver while unfolding her other revolver into a whip. After emptying the magazine of her revolver towards Cronan, she apparently decided that she would continue the fight in melee, because she re-morphed her revolver, so that now she was swinging two whips at Cronan from both sides, closing in fast.
Ocenaos focused on his own fight again, letting Scylla and Charybdis zoom towards Spinel from different directions, while simultaneously producing a burst of three small telekinetic projectiles. The bullets curved through the air, two of them managing to hit Spinel in the back. Yet Oceanos did not feel any celebratory mood – the attack had been weak because he had to conserve his aura reserves for defense. Spinel had hit him several times, and his aura sense was good enough to, even without looking at the gauge above the stage, know that his reserves were not much above half. He could not afford to get hit too many times, or he would be disqualified from the duel.
Shooting another look behind him, he saw Sumire failing to hit Matte, before in turn barely evading a counterattack from his sword. He watched as Matte then proceeded to go through a stabbing motion, which first looked a bit absurd with the large weapon he was using, but made much more sense when, mid-swing, it shortened back into its dagger form from the beginning of the fight. Oceanos could not help but wonder if Sumire might not have been a better matchup for Raine. Maybe her semblance would have helped her against Raine’s weird whip-spear-thingy more than against Matte’s weapon which apparently had about fifty different forms…
Jumping to the side to evade another barrage of hard-light bullets – if this was actually hard-light dust –, Oceanos managed to catch a glimpse of Isern who was fighting Raine. The girl with the many-colored hair was lying on the floor, Isern towering over her and swinging his axe down towards her. Raine rolled sideways just in time for the blade to miss her by a hair’s breadth, then jumped to her feet and used that same motion to throw her shield at Isern. The next moment, she swung her spear in a wave-like movement, and the spear seemed to mimic this, the wave rolling along it until the previously unyielding spear had transformed into a chain-whip. Okay, how many people have chain-whips? Suddenly, flames erupted from the segments of the chain and Raine swung it downwards at Isern while catching her shield with her other hand.
In the back of his mind Oceanos wondered whether he should switch with one of his teammates, but he was somewhat afraid that he might actually be more or less the best matchup for another chakram fighter – which seemed to be bad news…Spinel had apparently decided that the time for a ranged fight was over. Closing in with his weapons blazing, he started to furiously hit Oceanos. The other guy was good, Oceanos had to admit this. Yet, he managed to dodge or block most strikes and, if he might say so, did also dish out some nice hits himself. Then, Spinel sped up. As in, he did not just move faster because he gave his all or something, but one second, the fight was quite equal, the next, Spinel was attacking like mad, moving with supernatural speed.
What the hell? Slowing my weapons down is not enough, or what?, shot through Oceanos’ head. He did his best to block and tried to evade backwards to get some distance, but his opponent did not let him. He barely managed to protect himself from a few of the hits, but felt his aura drain rapidly from Spinel’s onslaught.
All of a sudden, he felt a weird force grab him and pull. Within a second, Oceanos was at the back of the stage, next to Professor Goodwitch who looked at him, then nodded towards the large screens above showing the fighter’s aura levels. His own was marked as red, and he frowned. At least Spinel’s bar was a rather dark orange approaching the critical area as well…
Then he realized that the fight would probably not go on much longer before Goodwitch would stop it. Ebony’s, Cronan’s and Matte’s levels were the highest out of the combatants, somewhere between yellow and orange, the others were more or less close to the threshold.
Well, that is brilliant. When the team leader drops out from the fight first, he thought morosely.
The remainder of Sumi's combat with Matte couldn't even truly be called a fight; under a continued assault from the massive blade, Sumire could do nothing but absorb each strike with her own blade, her guard being whittled away at until, with one mighty swing, both she and blade were sent flying into the wall of the arena, her already meager store of Aura draining instantly as the weak purple shield about her shattered like so many shards of glass. She slumped to the ground, not unconscious, but definitely in no condition to do anything active any time soon.
I knew it. I'm a failure. I'll never become a Hunter. I'm so sorry Sable...
Oceanos did not have to wait long for the fight to be over. It became obvious quickly that Sumi was not able to keep up with Matte for long, and soon, her aura was nearing the limit. Then, just as it seemed Professor Goodwitch was about to call her out of the duel as well, Matte hit her with such a powerful strike that her aura actually broke. A gesture of Goodwitch, and Sumire was pulled to the wall next to Oceanos to get her out of the combat area.
Now that already two members of team OSEI were defeated, the rest of the fight snowballed to a clear victory for CRMS. Isern had been able to fight Raine on an equal footing, but now, Matte joined her and the two together made short process of him. For a moment, it seemed that Ebony would be able to eliminate Cronan; she did something that suddenly gave her a burst of speed, attacking him from all sides with wide sweeps of her whips. Seconds later, Spinel countered her speed by using the same trick that Oceanos had also experienced previously. With Cronan striking her point-blank and Spinel letting loose another barrage of bullets, Ebony’s aura drained quickly, and soon, Goodwitch concluded the duel – this time before anyone’s aura broke.
Team OSEI took their seats again, everyone in a rather…subdued mood. “I’m sorry for that…Clearly Ozpin was out of his mind when he appointed me the leader”, Oceanos muttered miserably. Thankfully, just as Goodwitch explained that the class would now have a look at the replay of the fight to discuss which mistakes everyone had made, the bell rang, signaling the end of the lesson.
OSEI had barely entered their dorm room – Oceanos trying to remember the way and what to do with his scroll to unlock the door; this was the first time he saw the room his team would be sleeping in -, when a knock sounded and the door opened again.
Professor Goodwitch entered. “Apologies for the interruption. Ms. Araignée, I am afraid you will have to leave for home, something has…happened. Your mother asked for you.”
Oceanos put his chakrams on the small shelf in front of the window, looking back and forth between Ebony and Goodwitch. Something had happened? That did not sound good at all.
Worry immediately appeared on Ebony’s face. The girl just stood there quietly for a moment, then nodded. Looking around, she seemed to realize that not much packing was necessary; a suitcase which by its style appeared to belong to her was standing closed at the end of one of the beds. Oceanos wondered if any of his teammates had done much unpacking yet, what with their disastrous initiation and Sumi finding out about this Sable.
Ebony finally looked at the other three students. “Um, bye guys. It was nice meeting you, good luck with your training”, she said quietly.
“Bye Ebony. I really hope it is nothing serious…”, Oceanos answered.
“Please wait in the hall for a moment. Mr. Fírinne, if you would?”, Goodwitch said. Ebony left the room, and a boy entered the room. His brown hair was rather short, and he had unusually red eyes. While rather tall, similar to Isern and Oceanos, he had a very slender build.
“Mr. Fírinne just shortly arrived at Beacon. Professor Ozpin has deemed his combat skills quite appropriate to be accepted, so fortunately, he can immediately replace Ms. Araignée on team OSSI. I suggest you all take the evening to get to know each other better.”
With that and a nod, the woman shut the door behind herself and was gone.
There was a moment of absolute silence. Then, desperately trying to push thoughts of again? This team is being recombined again? aside, Oceanos cleared his throat and waved weakly. “Hey…um, I’m Oceanos.”
The air transport landed and only a handful people got off, mostly support staff and groundskeepers and the crew. But there were a few late arriving students, and a taller slender built young man stepped off looking around. Mouth open slightly as he took in the grandiose facade that was Beacon Academy.
"Hey! Kid! Yo, over here!" One of the staff waved at the young man, beckoning him over. "Follow me, Professor Goodwitch is waiting for you."
The young man nodded, adjusting the strap across his shoulder, which held his Broomstick. His preferred weapon was a shotgun that could be converted into either a staff or a pair of batons. Picking up his bag he fell in behind the staff member.
The school was different from what Sean had been expecting. Much more grand and... Opulent? It was bigger and fancier at least. Sean had arrived just as the classes had ended and saw the end of the fight and had been impressed and interested in the styles and techniques and weapons of his new team, and he hoped friends.
He followed Professor Goodwitch to the dormitories and waited quietly in the hall when they arrived at his new room. Standing in the hall he fiddled with his scroll while the Professor dealt with the Ebony.
Please wait in the hall for a moment. Mr. Fírinne, if you would?”, Goodwitch said. As the young lady left, Sean waved and smiled. Taking a breath and shrugging his bag over his shoulder the young man entered the room on his cue. "Mr. Fírinne just shortly arrived at Beacon. Professor Ozpin has deemed his combat skills quite appropriate to be accepted, so fortunately, he can immediately replace Ms. Araignée on team OSSI. I suggest you all take the evening to get to know each other better.” With that and a nod, the woman shut the door behind herself and was gone.
Sean looked around the room and his team. His smile came naturally to his face and his red eyes softened and beamed with genuine happiness. "G'day y'all! The name's Séanadh Fírinne. Ye can call'me Sean." There was a slight lilting brogue, softening his words. His right hand extended towards Oceanos, and when/if it was clasped in return Sean would squeeze the hand firmly, but not in a way that would be aggressive or intimidating, but confident.
Sumire dragged herself into the room doubled over in pain and crumpled into a heap on the bed, her body a complete disaster. Several ribs felt like they'd been if not fractured, then badly abused; as she delicately lifted a corner of her shirt, she was greeted with the telltale tenderness of a massive bruise on its way. If this was how all team on team fights were going to go, maybe she should do the infirmary a favor and just quit before she became a permanent fixture.
The rapid exit and subsequent entrance of a new member to the team was barely noticed by Sumire, in such as a state was she. However, once her hazy vision had finally settled enough to bear witness to the redheaded newcomer, she fought regain some small measure of composure, slowly sliding to the bedside to stand, albeit cradling her sore spot with one hand. "A-ah, welcome to Team OSSI then, I guess... I'm Sumire Yamashita." She gave a small bow, which quickly twisted sideways as her torso resented the work it was being put under. Without an additional word, she sat back down on the bed, wincing as she held from crying out in pain.
Sean watched as the young lady, his new teammate, poured herself out of bed and nearly fell over just trying to greet him. With a slightly concerned look for her on his face, he raised his right hand to his forehead and with two fingers gave a salute as way of greeting her. "Noice ta meet'cha Sumaire." His brogue softening and rounding vowels and accenting others. Glancing back to Oceanos quickly and giving a shurg with a smile as Sumire nusred her ribs silently on the bed.
He shrugged his bag to a more comfortable position on his shoulder and looked around the room. "Sooo, I guess I'm takin' the empty bunk?" Nodding in the direction on the recently vacated spot that Ebony Araignée had been assigned, or chosen depending on how the team had arranged themselves. .
There was a small, almost imperceptible twitch from Isern as their newest member introduced themselves. How many times had this happened? In a normal times it should be about four, but for them? And who knew how many more there would be? Not to mention he was still aching over their loss earlier in the day. "Great, another one." He growled softly to himself, though it was loud enough for everyone to hear. And for some, inexplainable reason, he really didn't like this Sean. "Floor works just as well," he growled again as the new guy stated the obvious.
“G'day y'all! The name's Séanadh Fírinne. Ye can call'me Sean”,
the new guy said, shaking Oceanos’ hand.
With what seemed to be quite an effort, Sumi made herself get up from her bed on which she had collapsed, holding her side. Oceanos had to suppress a whince; it seemed she was still distinctly feeling all the locations on which she had been hit in their fight. He hoped her aura would soon regenerate and start healing her bruises.
“A-ah, welcome to Team OSSI then, I guess... I'm Sumire Yamashita”, the girl introduced herself before sitting back on her back.
“Great, another one”, was all that Isern commented quietly, and Oceanos snorted; better snorting though than the alternative, which was probably something like throwing himself out of the window. As it seemed the other guy would not introduce himself, Oceanos gestured in his direction. “This is Isern.”
Sean then asked about the free bed. “Floor works just as well”, Isern promptly grunted. Suppressing a frown at him, Oceanos nodded in response to Sean’s question. “Yeah, this is actually my first night in this room as well.”
He noted all too well that his team members – well, those two team members of the original OSEI that were still present – felt quite unhappy with the day as well. “Please don’t take our…lack of motivation personally. Bad day…”, he added as a very, very short explanation, feeling that at least some acknowledgement of everyone’s terseness.
After that, he could not really bring himself to keep any more conversation going, he was too occupied with his absolute failure at giving any sort of helpful directives during their earlier fight against CRMS. Even when considering that Sumi had still been affected by her friend’s death, and that Oceanos himself had also not 100 % recovered yet from his journey to Beacon, it had been such a…definite defeat. Like, if at least CRMS had also only had one man standing at the end, or something like that.
In the end, everyone went to bed rather quickly and quietly; the others did not seem in much more of a mood for conversation than him. Of course, this made him feel even worse, because now Sean was part of their new team, and he was absolutely not at fault for their defeat and should therefore not be given any silent treatment.
The next morning, when the four had gotten up and made their way to the cafeteria for breakfast, Oceanos tried to make up a bit for the last evening.
“So, Sean, where are you from? How come you only arrived after the semester started?”
The meeting of his team and spending their first night together did not go as he had thought it would. But showing up late had that affect, as well as the very apparent fact that they had gotten beaten pretty badly did not aide in the comradery he had been hoping for.
It had been a quiet, and in Sean's opinion, awkward time getting ready for the day in the dorm. But he was grateful that at least one of them wanted to talk. "Weel E'm from eh smol village to the sooth o' de agricultural district. Me families moostleh woodcutters." He said with a grin and rubbing the back of his neck, a tick he had when talking about himself or his family. Looking at Oceanos then to the others, he shrugged and slid his hands into his pockets. "Der were a Grimm attack dat hit oos an de farmers pretty hard." Shrugging and kicking a small pebble as they walked. "Eh miss'd da transport out. Eh dinnae think eh was goonna make et." Taking a deep breath and looking up at nothing in particular he continued. "But der were a sec'nd won an here Eh em." Ending with a big genuine smile, that would come across as friendly and open, no matter how grumpy someone was it would be hard to not smile back or at the very least get an huffed sigh and eyeroll.
It took a sentence or two from Sean for Oceanos to realize the boy was speaking with a bit of a dialect. Working overtime, his brain managed to catch up with Sean’s words and make sense of them. After the group had entered the cafeteria and found a spot in the queue, he answered.
“Ah, I’m from a small village as well!” Realizing that a flood of memories was trying to push its way into his thoughts, Oceanos quickly shoved all of this aside and continued.
“Good to hear you still managed to get a transport here. Aaand that reminds me, where are you two from”, he then said to Sumi and Isern, whom he now realized he knew astoundingly little about considering they were on the same team. Thinking about their upcoming lessons this day, he thought he could remember the first course not being combat-related, so he went for a good portion of muesli for breakfast before looking around and finding a table for the four of them.
“You haven’t missed much, by the way, just a Grimm studies lesson and a History lesson, but you can look at my notes”, he then added to Sean.
Sumire was in better shape today than she'd been the day before, on account of actually having slept this time, but to say she was recovered would be a gross misstatement. As Oceanos asked his question she initially blankly stared at him before some bubble of subconsciousness seemed to pop, finally allowing the girl to comprehend what he'd said. "Huh? Oh, um, I'm from Mistral. From... one of the major cities." She hesitated to say an exact location lest one of her teammates choose to look into her background and open up that can of worms.
Wanting to rapidly shift the conversation's attention away from her, she followed with. "What about you, Isern?"
Isern looked around dumbly, once more in his usual morning stupor. "Huh?" he asked before the question fully registered with his mind. "Oh, uh..." He had to think about it for a second as he pushed through the fog of his mind, though he tried to hide it by rubbing the sleep from his eyes. "I'm from... Borgund. In the north of Minstral. Nothing much to say about it, I guess. Bit of a mountain town? We had a wall to help keep the Grimm out, and more than a couple Hunters, nothing like what Mistral or Atlas or even here at Beacon. But enough to keep out enough and keep us safe. Where'd you say you were from, Sumire?"
"Oh aye, Ei'm glad too mate." Giving a big toothy grin and chuckle. "T'wood'a bin a moighty loong hoofa o'derwase." Looking to and nodding at the team leader at the offer of reading over his notes. Though Sean knew he would need all the help he could get when it came to the academic portion of their education.
Sean smiled at hearing he was not the only one not from one of the major cities. That should make getting along easier, since they would have similar experiences. Though Sumire being from a major city was interesting to him all the same.
Grabbing a pastry and coffee, adding in an unhealthy amount of sugar and a splash or two of creamer, turning the once black steaming mug into a caramel colored sweet mixture of caffiene. Sitting next to Oceanus and across Sumire as the four of them found a table in the mess hall. Smiling in a friendly manner and listening to the answers given by his teammates. Looking to Sumire as Isern asked for specifics on where she was from. Sipping from his mug with both hands, lookin both interesting and friendly. Or at least that was what he was trying to convey.
When Oceanos tentatively knocked at the door of his home, steps sounded from the inside immediately; about three seconds later, the door flew open.
His mother stared at him from puffy eyes, her face switching between utter relief at his mere sight and worry at the scratches, bruises and a rather deep gash that covered him.
A moment later, though, a storm cloud seemed to take control of Myosotis, and suddenly, she did not look like a delicate flower at all.
“WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?!? I HAVE DIED A THOUSAND DEATHS!!! YOUR FATHER IS SEARCHING FOR YOU! AMBOLT IS SEARCHING FOR YOU! PARDUS WAS – thank you so, so much, Pardus, I really don’t know what to do without you sometimes –“, she interrupted her screaming for a moment, looking at Oceanos’ mentor, then immediately fired up again, “– YOU ARE NOT A HUNTSMAN YET, AND UNTIL YOU ARE ONE, YOU WILL STICK TO YOUR MENTOR!!!” (1/3)
Sean – unsurprisingly – responded that he was glad as well about having reached Beacon somewhat in time, and Oceanos smiled. Then he forcefully kept his smile on his face, trying to hide the fact that he was somewhat struggling still to understand all of Sean’s accent. What was a hoofa? He thought he had heard about a type of sponge with that name, but why on Remnant would Sean be talking about a long sponge in this context?
Sumi seemed to need a moment for processing before she answered Oceanos’ question.
“Huh? Oh, um, I'm from Mistral. From... one of the major cities”, she said somewhat vaguely. Not elaborating on this, she instead immediately passed the question on to Isern, who apparently was also not quite awake yet. After rubbing his eyes, though, he answered more detailed.
“I'm from... Borgund. In the north of Mistral.” The boy then explained that it was a mountain town, protected from the Grimm only by a wall and a handful of huntsmen. Except for the mountain town part and the plural on the huntsmen, he could have been describing Sagisō, Oceanos thought.
“Where’d you say you were from, Sumire?”, Isern then added, and Oceanos grinned.
“Not much of a morning person?”, he asked. He conveniently omitted the fact that he loved sleeping in as well. With all the work that had had to be done each day back at his village, he had been used to getting up early all his life, and now that he was not just a huntsman in training, but also team leader, he felt that it was not the time and place to change that.
"Eh?" Sumire responded off-guard. "Ah, uh, um... well... the City of Mistral..." A reddish blush crept across her cheeks as she was forced to admit part of her origin. "Wh-why? H-have you been there before? I mean... there's... not that much there that's interesting... I mean yeah it's the capital... and there's a lot of companies there... and uh... houses... big houses... really big houses..."
She immediately dove into her morning bowl of noodles to try and prevent herself from saying anything else.
Isern had grabbed the breakfast classic, eggs, toast, and some bacon. They didn't have anything in the morning that would require to much physical labor, so the greasy food would have no trouble staying down. As he ate he was also considering going back for a bowl of maple and brown sugar oatmeal.
"I've been there once. Haven't really had time to wander around, but that sounds about right. Lot's of lights, lots of noise, and to many people." As his belly began to fill, the fog on his mind began to clear. It was refreshing, being able to think without feeling his thoughts gently bounce around like they were in some fuzzy container.
Myosotis seemed to stop only because she was running out of air. Oceanos was quiet, guilt burning inside him. After he had finally finished his chakrams last week, he had been dying to use them in combat. So far, Pardus had only allowed him once to take them with him to the fields and use them for harvest. Harvest! The boy might have decided for chakrams because they could be used for both harvest and combat, but wasn’t it obvious he wanted to fight with them? Still, sneaking away in the morning and running into the woods by himself had probably not been a good idea…He had ended up surrounded by Grimm and been running from them ever since, trying to separate them and reduce their numbers one by one, but without a semblance to help him and a dire lack of experience even with his own weapons, he had been forced to hide. Pardus had arrived just in time to save him from several Ursai that had been drawn to the scared boy. (2/3)
It appeared to Oceanos as if Sumire had thought – or hoped? – that she was out of the interview now; when Isern asked her again about her origins, she finally provided Mistral, with a lot of stuttering on the side, before almost vanishing inside her breakfast. Responding to her counterquestion, Isern explained that he had been to Mistral once as well but did not seem too impressed by it.
“Huh”, Oceanos made. “Even noisier than Vale? When I walked through the city on my way here, I honestly was completely overwhelmed. I have never been to any city before…” At the same time, he envied his two team mates a bit; he was quite curious and looking forward to seeing more of Vale City and also wondered what Mistral looked like.
After finishing their breakfast, the four students left the cafeteria together with a bunch of other first-years. Somehow, the hivemind did its magic once again and the group ended in their classroom for the first class of the day: Dust studies. This was one of the classes Oceanos had been looking forward to most, as dust had been quite a rarity in his small village, and his experience in using it was limited and only covered fire, ice and lightning so far.
Instead of the normal lecture hall, they found themselves in a laboratory of sorts. Rows of lab benches filled the room, each of which was surrounded by a protective screen on three sides, opening only to the front where people would stand and to the ceiling. Oceanos wondered if this was to contain dust explosions and how often these happened.
At the front, their teacher of this class stood: A pale, blonde woman in a lab coat; according to the schedule, her name was Diama Al’mas. She looked rather young, maybe in her late twenties, and was quite attractive, which must have been noticed by others as well: Some guy walked into the room after OSSI, saw the teacher and promptly whistled. Professor Al’mas glared at him.
“Everyone find a bench and get a lab coat and glasses”, she said sharply. After some shuffling, all teams had spread across the room and found said equipment at their bench.
“Dust is a weapon. I assume that is what most of you think? Throw a Lightning Dust crystal at your enemy to shock them, infuse your blade with Fire Dust to make it burn, shoot some Ice Dust rounds to freeze opponents, and that’s it, right? Wrong”, Al’mas stressed.
“Dust is also a source of energy. It heats households, fuels vehicles, powers your scrolls, provides people with food where it can only be grown with difficulty…I sometimes think its applications are endless. I’m Professor Al’mas”, she finished, “and together we will explore these applications.” After a moment, the woman added with what seemed to be great reluctance: “…with a focus on combat applications, as this is a Huntsman Academy.” She did not actually roll her eyes, but her voice did.
A holographic screen activated in the front of the class, and a bunch of diagrams appeared. Immediately, Al’mas burst into an introduction of the basic aspects of dust and shuffling emerged as everyone got some paper to take notes. However, this went on only for about half an hour before the class dove into the practical part, starting to experiment with very small doses of dust under the watchful eyes of Professor Al’mas.
