"Going to go with my usual if that's okay, of course.... Fill my Beta with HEAP shorts, and load my hard points with plasma mini's. But I can do something else if you'd rather..." Charlise announced.

"I.... I tend to have better luck with missiles. And since the numbers of the Invid, I figured quantity would benefit me best."

Charlie leans over to whisper to Milo, "I-if you are nervous... don't worry. I get nervous too." She revealed quietly, as if it was some secret. "B-b-but I'm not saying you are! I'm sure you are really brave. But just that there isn't anything wrong with it!" She quickly tried to correct any assumption about calling him nervous. Hoping she didnt somehow offend him.

Milo lets out a laugh at Charlie's confession, and whispers back, "Your secret is safe with me. I won't tell a soul. Besides, who would believe me? You are a totally awesome pilot!" He seems to try and shrug off his worries with a thumbs-up and a grin, then settles in for the long flight out.

Eight hours into your recon flight, Sgt. McNamara calls out from her seat on the Raven, "Orion Squadron, this is Big Eye Five. We are now 2,400 miles out, and our long range radar is finally getting some good returns on our target rock. There are signs that this asteroid is inhabited by a mining outpost, and there is a navigation beacon being broadcast from the place. There are multiple hard returns on our scope of several small objects in close orbit of the asteroid that could either be discarded junk, pieces of heavy ore, or spacecraft of some kind. At this point, unless they maneuver closer on their own, we will not be able to identify them until someone can get within visual range."

She pauses, then continues with, "Orion, be advised that we have five large returns on the surface of the asteroid. Our best estimate is that four are the exterior structures of the mining base, and the last one is a cargo ship. There is no indication that we've been spotted yet."

Hitting his radio, John calls out, "Blackjack here. Lets get a closer look at what is poppin' around that rock. I would suggest that we have Big Eye stay back, monitor the situation, and relay the info back to the Arwyn and the fleet. That sound good to you, LT?"

Silanon

"About the best we can do, unless command wants us to keep our distance. Cargo ship might mean prisoners there, or at least some resistance." She wouldn't mind the latter, it sounds like. "Think they'd have defenses in place? Just a mine, but they've got slaves to watch, likely."

Mike replies over his radio, "Sounds good to me Blackjack. Orion let's get eyes out there. Let's keep to formation and be prepared for surprises."

The operators on the Raven acknowledge your plan to go forward and eyeball the asteroid, adding, "Be careful, Orion Squad. We'll keep overwatch and alert you if there are any surprises heading your way."

Flying forward, you are about 200 miles out when Milo speaks up, "I am getting a radar signal out of the complex. These are detection values, so it is likely that they know we are coming. Hmmm. Yup, I have a signal, and our translators are chewing on it now. Putting it through."

"This is Administrator Kresta of Mining Site 5. Please identify yourselves, and be warned that we have zero tolerance for any Belt Pirate scum."

Rykon

Three Thousand Club
"This is First Lieutenant Mike McGregor of the UEEF. Requesting permission for our ship to approach to make contact."

As Mike saw it, handling diplomacy was not in his mission parameters. It seemed proper to leave these matters to the staff of the Raven and focus on the escort itself, lest he make some sort of intelligence blunder of one kind or another.

Psychie

The reply is quick. "What ship? All I see is six shuttle-like objects coming in. Are there more of you out there? State your business. We have only raw ore here, nothing refined. Nothing worth stealing until it is refined, and we don't do that."

Rykon

Three Thousand Club
"We aren't pirates, we're the United Earth Expeditionary Force. We're with a ship called the Raven. We aren't here to steal anything, just to survey what's in the area." Mike responds casually,

Kresta responds, "I don't know what this Earth is, but I would steer clear of this system if you know what's good for you. This system is under the control of the Invid. There are even Soldiers of the slugs on this rock, keeping my workers under guard as we continue to dig out Sekitan ore for their war machine."

Milo then says, "LT? Got a signal from Big Eye Five. They want to jump in on this conversation. Stand by." He presses a few keys, and then you hear the signal from the Raven.

"Administrator Kresta? I am Captain Elijah Mars of the UEEF. After our people came across a refugee ship from your world, we are now well aware of the Invid presence in this system, and we have a force of fighting men and women here that are ready to kick them in their teeth. If you would be so kind as to allow us to dock, we can discuss options for removing the Invid Soldiers from your mine as a head start to clearing out this system."

There is a long silence, then Kresta comes back on the air. "If you can help, I have thirty miners on this station that have their necks on the line that would enjoy some freedom from the claws of our tormentors. But as I said, we have little here to offer up as a payment other than our raw Sekitan ore. We are not even allowed weapons or we could take back this station ourselves. What do you have to bring to the fight?"

Capt. Mars says, "Our troops are well equipped. How many Invid do you have on this station that we would have to deal with?"

The Karbarran on the asteroid says, "There are eight Shock Troopers and a full twenty Soldiers."

On a side channel, the Captain calls to Mike. "Lieutenant? Do you think that your team can handle those numbers of Invid?"

John smiles. "Sir, those Invid won't stand a chance against us! Whoop, sorry, LT. That's not my call to make. But Mike, if it were my call, I'd say we go kick their mechanical asses out of here."

Psychie

Princess Psychie
The Captain chuckles at John's comment, then says, "Well, if you are confident that you can do this, I would suggest you move in and clear the asteroid of all the Invid and see what information we can garner from the Karbarrans here. Once the place is secure, we can then move forward and begin the task of establishing some sort of positive relations with these miners."

8 and 20. Sounds like some odds.... Some that he isn't too sure about, but judging from John's reaction, he seemed quite confident. And with the forces that they have.... He couldn't help but to crack a smile. "Let's make sure our bite is just as good as our bark, then." He said to John, seeming to match his enthusiasm. He also prepared his boosters, so as to bring them to the airspace.

"Alright Orion Squadron, doublecheck your systems, payloads, and link. We're going to need teamwork for this one. I don't know how much room we'll have on the inside but make sure you don't hit any civilians." Mike ordered over the squad comm. Once he had acknowledgment from the full unit he'd give the order to move in.

As you close in, Orion Squad is now only fifty miles out from the asteroid and able to get a visual on some of the larger structures on the surface of the rock with your zoom cameras. You can also see on the radar that most of the metallic objects out side the asteroid have maneuvered around and are heading into one of the buildings, giving you the thought that they may be mining vehicles of some sort that the operators of the mine doesn't want damaged in a pitched battle with the Invid there.

From their position behind you, the Raven is moving in closer, too, and slows to a stop five hundred miles out to keep themselves out of engagement range of any possible hostiles that might be coming out to meet you.

But as you approach, you are now just a few miles out and have not seen any sign of Invid. What you do notice is a large airlock door, easily big enough to fit a dozen Veritechs inside, opens wide in an apparent invitation to come in closer. But, in order for you to be able to get inside, you'll need to have your Alpha/Beta pairs split apart and transform into your Battloid mode (for the Alphas) or Guardian mode (for the Betas, assuming you don't dump your wing missiles first).

John surveys the area, taking in the lack of contact out here. "Looks like we have ourselves a bug hunt. We may be using the Cyclones, depending on how tight things get. Snake Eyes, get ready to take control of your Veritech as we disengage from one another. Standing by."

Psychie

Princess Psychie
With the flip of a switch, John is able to separate his Alpha from Charlie's Beta and move forward. As you get closer, you can see waiting for you in the airlock is a trio of Bearmen in spacesuits. They are not armed in any way that you can see. They stand back far enough from you to give you plenty of room to land your Veritechs, and as you come into the airlock, you are now under heavier gravity than that of the asteroid; obviously they have artificial gravity in the complex.

What do you do?

Mike hails the bearmen on radio. "Any chance you have access to a map of the asteroid that you can transmit? If we're to be successful here, we need all the information you can give us."

Silanon

"Separating myself, coming in behind you." Pulling the lever to release her Alpha from the Beta's bulky weight, Jandra pilots her Veritech towards the bearmen, transforming as late as possible and landing out of reach for their paws. Better be safe, even if these are allies. There are Invids around, who knows what they're up to. "A map, and as many details on the Invids' location as you have; Numbers, details, what have you. How closely are you monitored, out here? Would the bugs know you're meeting us, or that we landed at all?"

As the various mecha come flying slowly into the airlock, the Bearmen wait, standing out of the way to keep from getting squished under foot. When Mike calls out, asking for some plans on the layout of the place, you get a reply from Kresta. "Of course. Transmitting what information we have to you now." Thanks to the data given to you earlier by the Bearmen refugees, your computers are able to quickly translate the transmission from the alien operating system to one that is compatible with your displays.

The bulk of the buildings are made to scale of the Karbarrans, making them far too small to be able to fit your Alphas and Betas. But the main mine shaft is dug out much bigger, capable of fitting the Veritechs, with only the side branches being smaller, requiring you to leave your mecha behind.

Once everyone is inside the airlock, the outer doors slide shut and the chamber begins to pressurize. While that is taking place, the three Karbarrans that were waiting for you come walking up. The lead alien gives off a slight bow and says, "I am Crebile. I have been tasked to be your guide."

John looks at the transmitted map with a frown. "Mike? I have a feeling that we'll need the Cyclones for at least a chunk of this. Give me two shakes and I'll unload my Nova. It should be perfect for these conditions."

Silanon

"Question is if we all go in, or if some should stay in the main shaft as well. If some stay, I'd volunteer for the latter." Jandra eyes both the map, and the guide - looking for more insight from either the team or this Crebile.

Princess Psychie
Crebile says, "I can tell you that most of the Invid are in the mine, keeping our workers under armed guard, since the mining equipment can be used as a weapon, and they want to keep us under their claw. There are usually upwards of four Soldiers in the complex to keep us from getting into trouble here, but we can deal with them if you can handle the Shock Troopers in the mine." The spacesuited figure looks up at the large mecha and adds, "But there are many side shafts that your big machines will not fit."

Silanon

Three Thousand Club
"Those Shocktroopers, as well as your workers - do you know how much they're spread out, right now? If we can only strike against one group of troopers, the others might turn against your people." The Invids might not mind a bloodbath; mankind and its allies do. "Think spreading out ourselves would be wise?"

John continues to pull out the Cyclone from its storage location on the Alpha, and as he does so, he says, "I would advise against splitting up into more than two groups of three. Even with this digital map, we are on unfamiliar turf, fighting an enemy we have little experience in dealing with. Either way, we need to get ready. I am sure that the Invid will be in our faces soon."
