Futuristic Road to Paradise [IC]

Leda Ivanova

"I sure as Hell can try."

Leda acknowledged Kit's words with a subtle nod before returning her gaze to the street that stretched out before them. It was desolate, an abnormality considering the time of day, except for the cars that parked adjacent to the sidewalks and the fresh blanket of snow and ice. Her limbs tensed as she leaned forward and peeked around the mouth of the alley. Then with a soft inhale she sprang forward. She was met with gunfire from overhead, the sound piecing as she dove for the closest vehicle. A layer of fresh snow whipped up at her paws as she skidded, hunkering down on her chest and sliding underneath one of the closest cars. The movement was graceless, her ears and back catching underneath the car as her front paws scrambled to keep from sliding to the other side of the vehicle.

She looked behind her for the breath of a second before adjusting her gaze to the expanse of pavement. The sidewalk across from her position seemed miles away now, and the next closest vehicle wasn't directly in her line of sight. The shortest path would leave her--them---wide open, and with one of them being injured, getting across the street safely with all three wolves didn't seem possible.

Well shit.

Crawling to the front of the vehicle, she darted to the adjacent car parked in front of it. It was much lower than the first, but she hugged the ground, tucked her ears and crawled. Overhead the gunfire lessened, a sign that she hoped meant that the other two had either followed or held back as she maneuvered to the next car. She followed along underneath the cars until she'd crawled underneath the last one that overlooked a barren intersection. It appeared just as risky, but if they went westbound, they could escape around the turn and out of the gunman's sight. But there's no entrances to the sewer line that... her ears swiveled as she reached the nose of the car, head brushing against the bumper.

Forget manholes. That one wolf would probably lose her leg if we had to jump down one, but an overflow, that could work.

There was the small bridge that sat above an overflow that hadn't been used in as long as Leda could remember. Something about the development and improvement on the sewer systems, at least from what she'd heard, meant that the overflow was no longer necessary. An overflow with an entrance straight into the city's sewers. No matter the development, maintenance wouldn't have blocked off that entryway. A precaution if a natural disaster, no matter how unlikely, occurred and flooded the sewers.

With another soft inhale, something of an attempt to clear the tension in her limbs, she reared her legs up and darted out from underneath the car. Her back cut against the bumper as she shot out, a stinging sensation biting at her skin, but she easily ignored it as she rushed along the sidewalk to the intersection. She turned left, paws sliding, and nearly slammed into one of the traffic light poles as she cut the turn too late. Her shoulder barely grazed it, but she took it as a sign to slow down a fraction and check on her party before moving forward once again.

She'd only spotted the gunmen as they'd left the alleyway, but as the party progressed, she didn't spot any other signs of SPD or the SCG. The streets were devoid of life, both a welcoming and an eerie sight. Leda could only guess that the majority SPD and SCG had moved their focus to the outskirts where the others had gone to. It didn't help with her unease though as her gaze flickered over the pavement, the windows that aligned the facades, or the roofs overhead. However, it did make the journey much easier.

Stopping at the bridge to catch her breath, she finally turned her full attention to the other two. The scent of blood and the smell of wafting sewer tickled her senses.

"There's an overflow beneath the bridge. We can get to the sewers that way."

577656 As the words left her, she'd turned back around to assess the narrow steps that hugged the side of the bridge. They sloped down into a pit that was flooded with untouched snow. Swimming in what she observed to be at least two feet of snow was something she definitely wasn't looking forward to, but she hadn't felt the bone chilling cold since she'd turned. That, she surmised, was the only perk about their predicament.

Going down steps on four paws was awkward, but she managed two steps at a time as she trotted down into the thick coating of snow. The entryway to the sewers, a built-in hole against a brick wall, was just underneath the other side of the bridge. Pushing through snow that hadn't been disturbed in who knows how long was a just as awkward if not even difficult, but once she'd reached the entryway, she finally felt the tension that had built up against her muscles ease. Of course, the smell of fecal matter, of decay and trash, anything and everything foul that assaulted her nose did little in helping her relax. Even if she did catch a whiff of fellow human-turned-wolves.

Leda pulled her upper lip up, curling it into a look of disgust as she looked down at her white paws. This is going to suck...

Kit had been about to run after Leda when the gunfire started, causing her to duck back against the wall. Damn, will these men never give them a break? Kit hoped the others she had heard howling throughout the city would be able to make it out with their skins.

Holding her breath, Kit waited until the shooting died down before making an awkward three legged dash for the cars. Kit followed after Leda as best as she could, though the snow and ice didn't make it easy. Every so often she would hear a gunshot and would instinctively duck her head as she ran.

Standing on the bridge looking down towards the overflow, Kit knew she wasn't going to like what they were going to do. But at this point they didn't have much of a choice. If they didn't get uncover soon she didn't know how long it would be until they were killed.

Moving a bit more slowly, Kit carefully navigated her way down the stairs after Leda. It was a bit more difficult on three legs and at one point Kit slipped causing her to bump against the railing, making her whine in pain. Eventually she made it down and braced herself as she pushed through the deep snow. Standing at the entrance, Kit gave a sigh. Well, here goes nothing.

Kit moved forward and stepped into the overflow. Her eyes narrowed and her nose wrinkled as she suddenly bombarded with the strong set of trash and sewage. For a moment, Kit considered turning back. How were they supposed to navigate these tunnels if they couldn't smell where they were going? Still, Kit continued moving forward, trying not to think about what she was walking through. No turning back now.

Sasha’s eyes glowed in the dark as he padded up to the new wolves. “All of you are capable of seeing in the dark,” he informed. “Stay sharp. There are creatures down here more unpleasant than the ones above.”

The black wolf took the lead and the others started to follow. Gennady reluctantly followed, staring at the wolf’s back as his mind fell deep into contemplation. He wouldn’t be able to kill him as a wolf, but as a human he could. He saw how old the black wolf was in human form. As soon as Sasha taught them how to change back, he was going to snap his feeble neck. The deadly thought made his hackles raise.

Discreetly, Sasha’s eyes rolled to the side and his snout wrinkled a little. He sensed the killer instinct of one of the wolves behind him, and he didn’t like it. He led them through the sewers in what felt like a labyrinth. All the walls were the same. The same scum stuck to the walls and the same shit smell permeated the air. Above them, gunfire, barking, and the shounting of soldiers resonated. It sounded like a nightmare.

After a few more turns, Sasha suddenly slid to a stop when a big black obstacle blocked their path. The obstacle growled lowly and hissed. Scaly claws splashed in the gunk beneath it as it slowly belly-dragged backwards until its gleaming reptilian eyes could narrow on the presence of the wolves. Sasha lowered his head and bore his fangs as a growl rumbled from his throat.

“We need to move quickly!” he yelled. He didn’t give the wolves much time to think or even realize the horror that laid in front of them. The black wolf swiftly charged toward what appeared to be a giant mutant gator and leapt up onto its back and then over to the other side.

Gennady’s ears went flat against his head and his eyes shined in fright. After watching Sasha leap over and seeing the gator still trying to turn its massive body, the brown wolf charged after the old wolf.

“Hurry everyone before it turns!” he warned.

Gennady jumped onto the fat gator’s back and over to where Sasha had landed.

GM Note: Everyone will meet with Sasha in the sewer. The other wolves may encounter the gator as well.

Kit didn't know how long they had been traveling for. Underground it was hard to tell exactly how much time had passed. She had slowly gotten use to the strong scent of sewage that filled the tunnel, though her nose was still pretty much useless for picking up anything but the smell of shit.

Just as they rounded a bend, Kit's ears twitched slightly. She stopped, ears perked forward as she tried to see into the darkness ahead. She had heard something. Or she thought that she had. Kit had been just about to chalk it up to it being her imagination when she heard it again. It was a low half growling half hissing sound that made her tilt her head to the side in confusion.

"You guys hear that?" Kit asked her companions. "It sounds like..." But it couldn't possibly be. Kit had always thought that the whole gators in the sewer thing as just a myth. A fairytale thought up by some quack that had too much to drink. She heard something else then, along with a scent other than shit that finally reached her nose.

"Wolves!" Kit exclaimed as she darted forward, moving as fast as she could on three legs.

Tatiana skidded to a stop in the sloppy sludge she was running in as she stared in horror at the colossal creature in front of her, “what the hell?” she whipped her head from side to side, surly she was seeing things. She took a moment and watched as Sasha leapt on top of this creature. Last time she had seen one of these things it was in a zoo, behind the safety glass, it wasn’t moving much then.

As she thought about it, the crocodiles head moved back and forth as the tail begun to slide from side to side. It was increasing in power with each swing, as it flung filth around it. Tataina’s nose wrinkled as some splashed around her splattering her legs lightly. “uh… I have to get around this thing now.” Her eyes searched for a opening, she could get though and stay away from the thrashing tail and sharp teeth. She moved towards it slightly, with some other wolves that she was running with “no wonder these things have lived on this planet for so long…” she leapt and landed on the armor-like skin, it felt weird under her slick paws. She didn’t pause but kept in motion as he claws latched in the divots of skin helping to pull her over and onto the other side of the croc.

As she landed on the other side, she managed to take about two to three brief steps before she ran smack into the back of the brown wolf she followed over after Sasha. As she tripped over him, luckily neither of them fell into the ooze underneath them, she did come close though. In response, she snapped “why the hell did you stop so abruptly?!” her white fangs showed in her snarl as she passed his shoulder, looking him in the eye as she walked by. Her lip lowered down as she passed him completely, who was this guy to order her around? She could understand Sasha’a authority, after all HE was the one to turn all of them into wolves, but this guy? She flicked her tail as she continued her walk leaving him behind her. She walked to a nearby wall that was on a high ground of sorts, it was at least out of the muck.

She stood there and disdainfully flicked her front paws out, trying to get some of the grossness off of them. “I can’t wait to wash my hand-paws.” She sighed as she corrected herself, her ears swiveled as she looked over at Sasha. Her attention was dragged over to the brown yappy wolf, she rolled her eyes, and went back to flicking her paw. She did however, keep an eye on those two as the other wolves popped their ways over the huge croc.
