The rain outside continued to pour down, making it difficult for Evelyn to see outside the car window. Not like she was paying attention. She had her music in full blast, not caring that the driver and her parents beside her could probably hear it. Suddenly she felt one of her earbuds yanked out of her ear.

“Evelyn!” Her Mother practically barked in her ear. “You will listen to your mother when she is speaking to you!”

Evelyn hid her anger with a look of boredom. “Why? It’s not like I’m ever going to see your stupid face again after this.”

Her mother’s face softened a bit, partly hurt. “Evelyn, I just want you to know that this is for your own good. Maybe when you’re ready you can come home and-“

“-Come home?” Evelyn scoffed. “As if! This place is probably a hellhole but it’ll likely be more home than your mansion where I can’t do anything! Now leave me alone. Likely this place doesn’t let me listen to any good music.”

Evelyn was about to put her earbud in when the car skidded to a stop, making her lurch forward. After a slight recovery, she unbuckled her seatbelt and opened her door before her driver could. A burly guard came up to escort her in.

“I can walk!” She snapped, grabbing her two suitcases huffily and stepping inside the lobby. It looked fairly nice, to contrast with the gloomy exterior, but it still gave off the vibe of a prison school.

“The welcoming ceremony will begin shortly so just sit tight.” The guard told her.

“Whatever. I need a cig.” Evelyn pulled out a cigarette from her purse and began to light it before it was snuffed out and snatched by the guard.

“These are not allowed.” He said, to which Evelyn huffed. Looks like the “no-fun-allowed” atmosphere was already in place.

“Come on! It’s not like the building actually caught fire!” Michael protested as the police car drove on. He had been arrested for arson from a prank he had pulled, and was not allowed to drive with his own parents.

“You have the right to remain silent.” The cop driver reminded him. “Just be lucky you’re not in prison. We’re almost there, so just be quiet.”

Michael grinned, placing his feet up on the seat in front of him defiantly.

“Get your feet down.” The officer said sternly.

“Make me!” The boy laughed.

The officer sighed and just ignored him, to which Michael put his feet down and sighed in turn out of boredom. The gloomy exterior of the school came into site as the rain began to let up.

“Oh? Is this my new home? Looks a little shabby.”

“Be quiet.” Said a guard who had come up to him as the officer unlocked his handcuffs. “You should know that the principal is very strict and don’t put up with any hooligans.”

“Hooligans? I’m no hooligan.” Michael put his hands up innocently as he hoisted his backpack over his shoulder. He walked inside alongside the guard.

Nicolette was busy riding in a cop car with her brother, on the way to the school that she had been sentenced to. It was a boring ride, she wasn't even allowed to talk. Her brother glared at her, while she stuck out her tongue in return.

"We're here", said the cop driving them.

"Oh good, I thought we were going to be in that car forever!", Nicolette replied.

A guard came up to the door and got their suitcases. Nicolette glared at him and he gave her one as well.

"Hey Austin, is this my fault or yours?", she asked her brother.

Austin ignored her and continued up the steps.

Oh boy, Nicolette thought. It's going to be awhile before he talks to me again.

Nicolette grabbed her brother's arm and ran up the steps. Thus began the start of many adventures for the mischievous siblings.

The doors opened and walked in two more teenagers, siblings by the looks of it.

“Finally! Some company!” Michael exclaimed aloud. “I thought Eve here and I would be here alone for all eternity!”

The cop who escorted him and the cop that escorted the siblings briefly exchanged glances and brief conversation before deciding the situation was out of their hands and left for the principal to deal with. Where was she anyways?

Evelyn sighed, twirling a strand of blond hair around her finger. They had taken her iPod away at the door, so she had been forced to listen to her friend’s constant rambling. She almost found his naivety to be funny, but it was more annoying than anything else.

“Don’t be dramatic. Prison would be better than this dump.” She spoke, not even bothering to acknowledge the new company.

I’m actuality, the school was basically a giant mansion, well taken care of, and the lobby had shiny marble floors and columns. The only thing to ruin the atmosphere was that every door and window was barred, and security cameras surrounded the place.

Dani fiddled with the loose strings on her sweaters sleeve keeping her gaze out the window at the passing scenery and her ears on the low sound of some country song that barbled out of the radio. Drowning out the voices of the police officer's walkie that kept going off every few minutes. She knew she should feel relieved, her old art teacher convinced the judge to send her to this school instead of jail, but all she could think about was the teary gaze of her brother as she was led away. So lost in memory she didn't notice them pulling up to the school until her door swung open. Blinking, her gaze focused on the police mans face. "We're here. "

Biting her lower lip nervously Dani slowly scooted out of the car as the officer moved aside. Looking up at the building she felt her nerves curl into a ball in her stomach and had to force her feet to move and follow the officer with her tie dyed gym bag and back pack in hand. Entering she noticed other teenagers and paused uncertaintly by the door as the officer left, dumping her bags by her feet. Shifting in place she waited to see what would happen wondering where a teacher or principle was. It looked like the other teenagers were new to.

Austin spotted three other teenagers, all looking like they didn't want to be here. He understood, because the only reason here was due to his sister. Nicolette had been begging him to come along on one of her robberies. Austin reluctantly agreed, knowing the chances they might get caught were high. Of course, he tripped because of a table in the way, and the police arrived to take them away. They got to pack a suitcase each, but the police had to approve it. Now they were here. Nicolette was probably off trying to find a new partner in crime, but she was staying by his side. Then she as well spotted the other teenagers and rushed to meet them.

Nicolette raced over to meet these other teens. One was a pretty Caucasian-looking girl with a cool tattoo under her eye, and there was a boy smiling like he didn't even care about being here. Maybe they're siblings? thought Nicolette as she walked over to meet them. Then she noticed an almost shy looking girl holding a gym bag and a backpack on her back. Nicolette walked over to the two who looked like siblings first. "Hey, I'm Nicolette. Doesn't this place feel like a prison?" she asked, trying to start a conversation.

“Totally.” Evelyn replied, still playing with her hair. “They won’t even let me have my iPod. How am I supposed to listen to any good music? This may be an academy for “prodigies” as they call it but I have very specific tastes.” She put finger quotes on the word “prodigies”. “I’m Evelyn. This is my childhood friend Michael.”

“Doesn’t matter how much of a hellhole this place might be. Pretty soon, I’ll be queen.”

That remark gave Nicolette a sly smile. She wondered if maybe this girl was her new partner in crime. "This is definitely stupid, so that's one thing we agree on. Secondly, would you two like to be friends? Let me call my brother over here. AUSTTTTTTTINNNNNNNNNNNNN!" Nicolette spoke quickly, so fast she wasn't sure that they had heard anything she said. But Austin walked over with a friendly smile. "Hey there! I'm Austin. Sorry about Nicolette. She can be a quick talker sometimes."

“Nah, it’s no problem. I’m a fast listener.” Michael said with a carefree smile. And of course we can be friends! There’s no use fighting when we’re gonna be trapped here. Evelyn can be kind of bitchy sometimes but as long as you can overlook that I’m sure we’ll all be great pals.”

Evelyn elbowed him hard in the ribs and cleared her throat. “And Michael may be sort of a clown, but if you can overlook THAT, then being friends sounds nice. You should feel special, I don’t consider just anyone a friend of mine.”

Victoria gazed out of the window of the police car that was driving her to the school that was supposed to be her punishment. She had hacked a police database and they had tracked her. She wasn't mad at anyone but herself. She had gotten so used to hacking that she had spaced out and gotten sloppy. When they got to her they determined she'd be sent to this school. Nobody had any disagreements. Her aunt couldn't care less about what happened to her and she didn't have any friends that would vouch for her good character, so she went.

The car pulled up to the school and the officer told her to get out so she did. She bit her lip as she looked at the school. Sure, Victoria didn't have a good life at her school before, but would this be better or worse? She was honestly scared to find out, but didn't let it show. She followed the guard who had met her and the officer up to... wherever he was taking her. He finally opened a door to a room with some other teenagers in it. Victoria stepped into it, examining all the others with a straight face, not saying anything.

When it seemed like they would be waiting awhile, Dani moved to sit by her bags leaning back against the wall. Pulling a small canvas from her bookbag and some supplies she started a new painting. One featuring the schools entrance hall and the others around her. The familiar motions allowed her to momentarily forget where she was.

"So... does this place have wifi?" June tapped the stone-faced driver on the shoulder, plastering on a saccharine grin in an attempt to get a response. The journey to his new, drab home had been a long one, filled with the hum of classical music and one-sided conversation with his disinterested companion. "Or at least an ethernet port? I brought a cable, just in case. I'm guessing you folks don't have a pop-up shop for that sort of stuff. Too convenient, yeah?"

The driver ignored him, but the subtle whitening of his knuckles on the steering wheel transformed June's grin into a genuine one.

Before long, the car screeched to a halt, signalling to its passengers that they had arrived at their destination. A burly looking guard opened the trunk and emptied his luggage as June stepped into the daylight, squinting up at the intimidating building before him. It didn't seem like the worst of the worst, in his opinion, but it definitely could have used a facelift in the last decade. Peering around, his inability to spot any sort of life surrounding the school grounds put a bit of damper on his otherwise optimistic mood, but he refused to let it get to him. June wasn't one to dwell on the things he couldn't control. He promised himself before leaving his home that he would make the most of his stay here, even if it was the miserable hellhole he dreamed it would be. He could only hope his peers were willing to do the same.

With one last look behind him at the car speeding away, June sighed and made his way up into the building. The guard led him through the winding hallways until they reached a room with an outlandishly large door, signalling their parting of ways. "Thanks, love," June winked with a sloppy grin, before making his way inside and finding several new faces inside.

Victoria turned around when she heard footsteps and a voice enter the room. He looked and sounded... optimistic. Wasn't this place supposed to be essentially a prison? She knew some people believed in "optimism" but she didn't see the point. It only seemed like a foolish thing to do. She preferred to look at a whole situation and consider the positives, but she honestly mostly thought about the negatives. Victoria wasn't someone to shy away from honesty so she shot him a quick glare to make her first impression of him clear.

A chill ran down June's spine for a reason he couldn't quite pinpoint, until he made eye contact with a girl who was glaring at him as though he had just kicked a puppy. A quizzical look crossed his features as he tilted his head in confusion. She seemed like a normal person, save for the attitude, but he didn't really have much to go off of. He couldn't even tell if she was younger than him or not.

Well, that was something he could control.

Careful not to approach her directly, June made his way to her side of the room and shot her a small smile. He kept his distance, but angled his torso towards the angry looking girl. "Hey, I'm June. What's your name?"

Victoria gazed at the newcomer as he walked to the side of the room near her and raised an eyebrow when he turned to her. He looked confused when she looked at him, some people just weren't for directness. She thought her look was clear enough but maybe not. It was a common thing for her to subtly yet clearly make known what she thought of someone, which was usually a disliking, and usually they avoided her. She preferred it that way, it was easier than having conversations. The boy introduced himself as June then asked her name.

"Tori," she stated dully.

"Tori," June repeated, a tiny smile touching his lips again after successfully getting a response. "That's a cool name. I've never met a 'Tori' before. It's nice to meet you." She didn't seem like she wanted to be disturbed, so June didn't pry further and looked around at the room they were in. There were a couple other kids making conversation and a couple that weren't, but overall the atmosphere was pretty dreadful. Interally, June vowed to change that over time.

The smallest smile crossed Victoria's face when June spoke but was quickly replaced by her usual neutral expression. June seemed friendly. Which usually wasn't a trait Victoria liked when trying to not make friends, which was something she was quite good at. A couple thoughts crossed her mind as she was thinking if she should say something else to continue the interaction. One was that she wouldn't have free access to computers and tech here, which were what she spent pretty much all of her time doing back at home, so she'd be pretty bored. Another thing was that she'd never had any friends. She wondered what it would be like to have one, or even a friendly acquaintance. She was also quite curious what the people here had done to end up here.

"So, why are you here?" Victoria asked, rationalizing making a conversation with getting information. She kept her usual straight face, but didn't look as uninviting as she did when he first entered the room.

June's head snapped back in Tori's direction, not expecting her to reply. A wider smile bloomed across his face as he ran a hand through his disheveled hair. "I forged a bunch of IDs for some buddies, and then showed up to court crossed out of my mind," he told her with a sheepish chuckle. "Not my best choice, but hey, everyone on jury duty got a nice show." It was a spur of the moment decision, taking a long drag from his pen right as his lift arrived to take him to the courtroom. The shots beforehand? Not as spontaneous. "How about you?"

Victoria raised an eyebrow and allowed herself to let out the tiniest laugh as June tole his story. To her, it didn't seem like he was too bright. Which didn't bother her as much as she though it would. In all honestly, she didn't give any of her peers at home even the smallest chance of being liked in her opinion and she certainly didn't give them the chance to get to know her. But in this new environment she felt like she should give someone a shot. She knew that's what her mom's advice would be too. Victoria bit her lip before telling him what happened to get her landed here.

"Sounds like an interesting trial. I got caught hacking a police database," she said with a small smile, "I'd done it so many times, I got sloppy. They ended up being able to track me down. I just wasn't careful enough."

June's eyes widened. "Whoa, that's... so much more badass than my story." The more he talked to this girl, the more he was starting to notice the shifts in her expression. She didn't seem mean. Far from it, actually. Reserved, maybe, if he had to pick one word. But even if socializing came naturally to him, he knew that that wasn't the case with everyone. She was at least entertaining his attempt at conversation, and he appreciated that. Plus, she was a hacker. She was automatically cooler than he could ever hope to be.

"So do you just hack into places for shits and giggles, or do you do stuff with the data you collect?" He paused. "Oh, unless it's confidential. Then don't tell me." June waved his hands in the air dismissively, brows furrowed at the possibility of stepping out of his lane.

Victoria let out another small laugh. She appreciated June's willingness to back off something that could be confidential. That was something that annoyed her the most about people she'd observed at home, a lack of boundaries. She was willing to tell him what she did tough. It didn't seem like that unreasonable of a thing to talk about.

"It's fine. It was mostly just for fun, everything I did was harmless. The knowledge I happened to get was cool. And having the recorces to possibly blackmail people at any second was always pretty cool," she smiled and nodded.

She was actually enjoying this conversation. She didn't know what it was, but she felt like June was someone she could tolerate, even enjoy, being around. This was the most friendly conversation she'd had in two years. Victoria was glad she decided to talk a little more but as always she kept a neutral expression, not letting all her feelings show.

"Respectable," June remarked, making a passive mental note that Tori's laugh was nice to listen to. "I tried to get into coding when I was 15, just data analysis stuff that I could use for my classes. It didn't really click for me, though, you know? That algorithmic type of thinking. Not my area of expertise, I guess. Maybe you can show me how it's done sometime." He sent a tiny glare in the direction of the door. "Well, if they ever let us touch technology. I swear, they're sadists. Every last one of them." He emphasized the last part with an accusatory finger jabbing towards the entrance.

June sighed softly as he thought about what coming here meant for him. If there was one thing keeping him from breaking federal law and getting his passport revoked, it was his love for travelling. The outside world didn't exist in this little institute. Who knew when he'd get to hit the streets and practice his language skills again? The thought of it was enough to bring the slightest of sags to his shoulders.
Lizy Lizy

Victoria nodded as June spoke. Coding certainly wasn't for everyone, which was understandable. She also agreed that whoever ran this place were sadists. Keeping criminal teenagers in an institute, which was very dull, where they couldn't do the things they loved, was torture. Technology was Victoria's lifeblood and the very idea of not getting to use any made her dread the future. She couldn't even imagine what she'd do with herself. "I hope they do, at least once in a while," she remarked as she considered the thought. She shuddered the thought away, trying to remain straight faced.

"Anyways, do you do anything else besides forge IDs and do drugs? Any hobbies?" she asked.

A sparkle lit up June's eyes. "I like linguistics. A lot. Learning languages, speaking them, studying them--- I can't get enough of it. And travelling. I'm such a sucker for experiencing different cultures." He paused for a second before continuing. "I know it sounds super privileged, and I know it is, but I don't understand how people can be content with just staying in the same town they grew up in, marrying someone from their old high school and never feeling the need to explore. I mean, to each their own, of course, but it's something I'll never relate to. There's a whole world out there that's packed full of love and life and wonders we can't comprehend through words or pictures. I can't imagine not wanting to feel any of that, at all."

June sucked in a breath, ducking his head a bit as a blush tinted his cheeks. "Ah, sorry, I was totally rambling. I get really into it sometimes and... yeah." He chuckled softly. "Feel free to tell me to fuck off, like, whenever."
Lizy Lizy

"No, no. That's actually really cool," Victoria smiled, a real, relaxed, smile. She didn't realize she was doing it at first but when she realized she was it faded. She was new to this opening up thing and saw feelings as a weakness. Still, June's linguistics thing was really cool. It pleased her to know that he wasn't just drug doing criminal. She also understood the wanting to explore thing. Although she didn't do much around people and social situations, she loved trying new things. That was the fun of hacking for her, it was different every time. She was glad that she found a decent person who she felt she understood that she could at least talk to while she was here.

"You're not as bad as I thought you'd be," Victoria stated, not meaning it rudely, it was just her honesty coming out.
