On December 3rd, 1872 at 6:52 p.m., the body of a beheaded vampire was found in Central Park by a policeman. By 7:30 p.m., the area had been cordoned off and the public alerted over the radio that a third victim of the Manhattan Murderer was discovered. When a shadowhunter arrived on the scene at 7:35, a note was discovered in the snow and blood, left behind by the perpetrator and overlooked by the police in the area. The vampire was later found to be Liang Chen, former leader of the New York vampire clan.
The week before, an older werewolf was discovered with numerous severe injuries in an alleyway between apartment buildings, the most noticeable being his missing heart. Two days before that, the body of a young warlock was discovered in the East River, both of his hands missing. The cause of death was asphyxiation. At least 10 other downworlders have been reported as missing since then.
Until the murder of Liang Chen, neither shadowhunters nor the police, who only saw the murder victims as human, had any leads or evidence related to the perpetrator. It was the first sign that the murderer was both aware of shadowhunters investigating the murders and on some level, didn't want them involved.
