Moira has a quiet elegance about her features, with thick dark brown hair, intelligent blue eyes and a kind openness to her features. She is a woman just below average height with a dainty figure just as was expected of a desirable young woman. Moira is pale with an almost porcelain complexion as she prefers to stay indoors and exercise her cerebral muscles than anything else. A smattering of freckles sit comfortably on her upper cheeks and the bridge of her nose, a personal favourite feature of hers.
When it comes to dresses, Moira is torn between embracing the more modern fashions that her younger sisters follow and maintaining the modest, if somewhat restrictive style of tradition. She tends to take a middle ground, wearing modest dresses in pastel shades and corsets to accentuate her already enviably small waist. Truly Moira is not much interested in what she wears and far more interested in what she 'clads her mind' with.
Personality

Moira Tennyson is an enigma even to her siblings and parents, with many facets to her personality that some people may never see. On the surface she is a pragmatic and slightly aloof woman, not usually involving herself in disputes, however this is not all there is to this young woman. Moira is incredibly intelligent and is unapologetic about it. Passionate and occasionally ruthless, Moira will use her favourite mental weaponry to fight her corner when needed.
To acquaintances, Moira interacts with a civility and palpable respect. Though she is not friendly with anyone particularly she certainly has an affection for the people she grew up with.
Amongst family she is more warm and her sharp and dry sense of humour surfaces more often. She will discuss her latest reads with those siblings that will listen and has a special affection toward her father whom she greatly admires. Unfortunately, Moira is very aware that she is ahead of her time and her erudition is not entirely welcome. She does not care and though she respects tradition, she also understands when it is inhibiting.
History

Moira is the first of five daughters born to Edward Tennyson, a respected and unusually wealthy merchant and his wife Mary. The family are members of the landed gentry. The family of seven live comfortably in a modest country estate in the county of Somerset called Everton Abbey, which the Tennyson children have always known.

As the eldest child, Moira naturally adopted a maternal role to her younger sisters Harriet, Margaret, Charlotte and Elizabeth. Their childhood was spent learning all of the most important pursuits for young women, such as sewing, piano, reading the most up to date works of literature, etiquette and other such things. Although Moira enjoyed learning such things, she had always been most fascinated by her father’s work as a merchant. As a young girl she would badger him about it many a time, much to the dismay of her mother.

“Moira your fascination with your father’s work is not becoming for a young lady.” Her mother would say, though her father encouraged her inquisitive mind. Moira’s younger sister were always held in higher regards by Mrs Tennyson. The girls seemed naturally inclined toward perfect grace and feminine virtue, whilst Moira’s interest in such things was clearly diminished in comparison. Rather than fashion, gossip and learning to impress wealthy potential suitors, Moira was always far more interested in cultivating her mind through devouring books on all subjects.

As the firstborn of the Tennyson children, Moira would have been eligible to inherit her family estate, however for legal reasons known as entailment, the estate must be handed to the next male heir. To that end, Moira and her sisters now must be married to suitable gentlemen in order to survive. Though she would rather not meet her husband in such a way, keeping her family afloat is far more important to Moira than her own personal happiness.

Young Henry Cavendish could very well be described as an eligible bachelor. Unlike his elder brother, Henry was blessed with extraordinarily good looks. The young man has a well kept mane of dark brown hair reaching to his shoulders and parted perfectly down the middle. His deep brown eyes are framed by long thick lashes and a defined brow, and overall his facial features are well defined. Although his own opinion is not required, Henry is keen to speak of how fond he is of his cupid bow mouth. The young bachelor stands at 5"10 and is always impeccably dressed for every occasion. Henry takes great pride in his personal appearance and opts for a classic and timeless style. He dislikes overly restrictive Eton collars and things to that effect, and if he could he would loosen his cravat far more than is socially acceptable.

Henry is a charismatic and highly intelligent young man. Despite his intellect, Henry has always opted for less cerebral pursuits and more, well...carnal ones. He has always been absorbed in the things he can experience with his five senses, resulting in a very well hidden hedonism. Henry is eloquent and skilled at reading the social 'temperature' of a room. He is a social chameleon and finds himself able to float between various social groups with relative ease.

Due to his charisma and good looks, young Henry is incurably vain and can be rather manipulative if his target is suggestible enough. Unfortunately, Henry dislikes applying his intellect to a work ethic and desires the power and prestige of being the heir of his father's estate without the responsibilities. He is cavalier and complacent, a trait that greatly irks his father. Unsurprisingly, Henry is a flirtatious young man, and entirely too sensual. He enjoys pursuing attractive people, but has never had the slightest inclination to settle down with one woman for life.
History

Henry Arthur Cavendish was born as the second and final child of the Baron of Somerset named William and his dearly departed wife Evangeline. The family estates in Hertfordshire were vast and sprawling and Henry and his brother Thomas grew up in luxury and comfort. The siblings grew up with a built in rivalry, primarily because of their father's overt favour for Thomas. As a young boy Henry was surprisingly shy and withdrawn, spending most of his time at his mother's side all the way up until her untimely death by small pox when Henry was nine. The death of Evangeline changed the young boy forever, however instead of becoming more insular, he came out of his shell and determined to be his own person no matter what his father said.

As Henry grew older, he grew wearisome of vying for his father's attention and realised that his father's dismissal of him meant that he had far more freedom to do as he pleased in comparison to Thomas. The young man attended the prestigious school of Eton far off in London as a boy and then (somewhat reluctantly) finished his education at Harrow and Cambridge University. Upon his return from the hallowed halls of Cambridge, he continued life as a member of the barony in Hertfordshire, earning somewhat of a keep from odd jobs that he had no need to do. Most of the time he avoids his brother and hosts opulent parties for the creme de la creme of society along with less scrupulous endeavours...

Sasha is a man who's spent most of his adult life in the military and around horses, and it shows. He likes order and routine and sensible behavior. He's most often in uniform. He likes uniforms--he finds it very useful to know at a glance where everyone stands in the social order. If he's not in uniform he's probably in something practical, made of sturdy fabric and dark colors, because it's certainly going to get horse snot on it eventually. It's not that he's indifferent to fashion, but he ultimately finds it a little useless for his purposes.

He doesn't particularly think of himself as handsome, but he is. Sasha's nose is a little crooked and has definitely been broken at least once. Has the required silly little hussar mustache. He's got callouses on his hands and opinions on boots.
Personality

At first meeting, Sasha often comes across as cold: quiet, reserved, and often dry or brusque when he does contribute to the conversation. This is a defense mechanism: for most of his life he was the weird kid, too loud at the wrong times, always saying the wrong thing, and he's learned to keep his mouth shut. If you manage to get him to warm up to you, you'll find a completely different person hiding under that indifferent armor. Confident, affable, and with a decisiveness that's its own kind of charisma, once he's comfortable with people he usually winds up in the center of them, to his great surprise.

At this point, the only person who thinks people don't like Sasha is mostly Sasha, but old habits die hard.

Sasha does also have a hell of a temper, but he's long learned to keep it to himself. Most people don't get to see it until he's well past the boiling point. Despite the temper and his often grumpy daily demeanor, in an actual crisis he's a cool head. When everything is going to shit around him is when Sasha is at his best, and he's thrived on the battlefield.
History

Though born in Moscow, Sasha's mother, Helen Ingham-Butterworth, was English, from a well-established merchant family, and with no brothers, heiress to the family business. His Russian father, Ivan Romanov, worked as a clerk in the business, managing to work his way up and attracting Helen's attention in the process. The middle second oldest of their three children, Sasha and his siblings received a better education than most Russian noble children, with their English tutor. The family spent most of Sasha’s childhood in Moscow, with occasional visits to Saint Petersburg and England, and his childhood was largely untroubled.

Things changed when Russia joined the Continental System in 1806, which made the family import business technically illegal. In practice, it merely moved to a smuggling operation, which was both an open secret and largely tolerated. Though Sasha's maternal grandparents returned to England shortly after his immediate family remained, with his parents and older brother handling most of the business.

While his family turned to smuggling, Sasha began his career as a young officer with the 2nd Pavlograd Life Hussar Regiment. Joining shortly after the end of the Fourth Coalition War, Sasha's initial time with the Hussars had little danger and a lot of glamour. He didn't see action until the Austro-Polish War of 1809, when Russia reluctantly fought the Austrian advance into Poland based on their treaty with France. The Austro-Polish War ended quickly, but the following year Russia withdrew from the Continental System.

Two years later, Napoleon invaded Russia.

Stationed in Volhynia, Sasha only heard of the Battle of Borodino and the Occupation of Moscow after the fact (the rest of his family fled Moscow to Saint Petersburg, and then to England). After Napoleon's failure at Moscow, Sasha and the rest of the Pavlograd Hussars chased him back to France, under the command of Tsar Alexander himself. Sasha spent some time in Paris after the Coalition forces took it, and then went on leave to join his family in England, rather than return to Moscow.

While most of his family has remained in London, Sasha has been staying with his newly retired maternal grandparents on their small estate in Hertfordshire, and has been (to the surprise of no one) mostly occupying himself with his horses. No one's quite sure what Sasha's going to do once the season is over, least of all Sasha.

Making unannounced calls to leech off of others despite his wealth, Fitz’s interests rarely deviate far from his competitive sportsmanship as an avid polo player, huntsman, and wooing women. A self-described blackguard, his title and land are the only reputable thing about him as he wastes his days at the bottom of a bottle.

Face Claim: Henry Cavill
Hair Colour/Style: Blond, on the longer side albeit shorn at the neck and well-combed.
Eye Colour: Blue, erring on grey.
Height/Build: Standing at 6’3”, Fitzwilliam cuts a strapping figure more equated to soldiering than aristocracy; from the width of his shoulders to the breadth of his chest, tapering in toward the waist. However his hands, verging on rough yet uncalloused, give away the game of his noble birth.

The young Lord has always been doted on for fine, fair hair, something he’s altogether developed vanity of⁠—curling about his neck and face with a framing quality, beloved as any gold crown. Sporting a pair of sideburns down to the corner of his angular jaw, Fitzwilliam’s groomed moustache emulates that of an officer, preferring to incite an initial impression of valiance (one that is not entirely honest) and authority he oft fails to grasp amid the rabble of older Lords. High cheekbones and tall-bridged nose suit their presumption of his good-breeding, following an aristocratic air of subtle disdain attributed to most of elevated status. Nevertheless, Wellesley indulges in foppish clothing, tailored to fit and made to order, his cravats are embroidered silks, leaning into lighter tans and colourful statement pieces that mark him as a young bachelor of modern tastes and far too much money.

Upon his right hand Fitzwilliam dons the family coat of arms as that of a signet ring, accompanied by a delicate fob watch and chain that hang between his buttonhole and pocket. Fond of tobacco, his vices don’t end at the flash of a silver flask–cigars and cigarillos easily found in the folds of his jacket, where the scent of smoke and sandalwood cling, overpowering that of gentle soap and rosemary oil.
Personality

The young Marquess is a man of jovial nature, never without a flush to his cheek and crooked grin skewing his lips⁠. Competitive to the core, his sportsmanship is only ever partially for show, enjoying the attention of it and most-importantly, quashing other’s attempts to beat him. As far as his laughter reaches, or the loose dispensing of charity upon those in need, Fitzwilliam is a devoted man to his core. Where he confesses to lack courage, it ought to be found overshadowed by those who’ve sacrificed greater things than his own self-possessed philanthropy. But as with the pride of aristocrats, a breed of men who long constructed themselves as infallible figures of honour, Wellesley’s multitude of sins and vanity are to be heeded.

The green-eyed monster of envy, a coveting drive to have what he’s unable to touch⁠—and lose interest as it falls within the cradle of his hands. A man who acts the cuckoo as he calls on others, inserting himself within the family dynamics as some odd way of cementing momentary normalcy. Though such touching methods of grief are overlooked by his outlandish requests of his hosts, testing them to their limits of hospitality.

He prefers to exude the air of a tortured artist, indulging in literature and lounging with tobacco; as if the biographer of some unknown Greek tale of war and tragedy⁠—though his pretence of acting aloof falls at the slightest provocation of criticism or enthusiasm. Nevertheless, his poems oft find their way into the hands of ladies he’s courted, only to occasionally be copied for another; he’s yet to suffer a consequence, and as with relocating back to Hertfordshire, there’s no reason to alter such effective methods lacking muse.

Yet, not even the most talented of actors can forget themselves for long. Fitzwilliam’s weakness is drink; hardly hidden from the circles of the Ton’s elite as he imbibes to soothe his nerves and quell his temper. His spoiled nature is woven from luxury, as much a facade as it is truth, but it ought to smother him some day.
History

Fitzwilliam had not always been the intended heir for Townshend, nor had he desired the burden. The second son of the old Marquess, family was a vague concept formed out of inattention. It consisted of nannies and tutors, lonely outings, his brother much too old to act as a playmate and mother far too busy entertaining her latest weakening constitution to indulge his antics. Barred away in the nursery, it was the local Gentry’s children who kept the Little Lord company, or cousins visiting over Christmastide.

Marquess and Marchioness Wellesley were keenly unhappy with one another. A divide one grew accustomed to throughout their youth, where mother continued to feign sickness and father retreated back to his study. The marriage proved out of necessity, though even producing heirs was a cause of great contempt and struggle; heartbreak and loss strained already sour relations, until the eldest son Leopold’s birth united them for a short time.

The arrival of a Fitzwilliam, some years later would've been considered a blessing if not for the rumours surrounding the circumstance of his birth. Tales of adultery suggested he was an unintended fruition of the Marchioness' dalliances with her bedfellow Baron de Ros. Nearly disowned, the lack of evidence was all the more convoluted by the Marchioness' visits to her husband's chambers on particularly drunken nights of revelling. It was only natural to resent the pest of a broken union⁠—whether or not he was truly the Marquess' son became obsolete, rather, he was a reminder of great humiliation. A humiliation bearing the family name Wellesley.

Walled out of his parent's affections, yearning to be more akin to Leopold, Fitzwilliam turned to the only method left⁠—mischief. But the strike of a cane was better than silence, the raised voices watered his appetite for connection, and the games became competitive. He tried to outride, outfence, out-do Leopold, in every way that mattered, his downfall being that of his studies. Enrolled at Eton in the footsteps of the future heir of Townshend, it became clearer who the real scholar was. Perhaps the only thing that changed was who held the cane. Fitz leaned well into his art and literature, a captain of the Eton polo team and equally avid sportsman, managing to fail all else as his mind was occupied by poetry and prose.

When Fitz was fifteen, the Marquess bought Leopold a commission in the cavalry. Fighting overseas, returning with tales of fierce combat and extraordinary feats–it was something spectacular to see, when one’s own brother fought shoulder to shoulder with men of mythical status.

Besides these few excitements, or French bayonets retrieved home as gifts to Fitz, the younger Wellesley attended Oxford to study common law at behest of his parents. Although his admission was paid for in lieu of his failings, he confessed to enjoy it. Words that made shackles, or something akin, laws and their entanglements one could be satisfied to sift through–one found no shortage of parties in the student lounges, after all. Drinking until late and stumbling through cobbled streets, celebrating their exams and toasting to the uncertain future.

Passingly, Fitz entertained marriage to the daughter of a country baronet, however her status and his father’s disapproval crippled any dreams of union. She ended up a clergyman’s wife. Far more fitting, in his opinion, than to become his own overbearing version of a man who made a great mistake on the riveria of misdirecting his love.

Once graduated, the old Marquess impressed upon him duties of estates and managing rent, though much of his burgeoning adulthood was spent in London “on business”. Gentlemen’s clubs and prowling the season’s best ballrooms, mischief quickly outgrew itself into a form of spoilt advantage over others.

Around the time, the Marquess’ health began to deteriorate, a man whose weak heart betrayed him as he took to his bed, where his bedside was tended to by the thing he’d resented most; Fitzwilliam.

Leopold was killed in action at Salamanca, 1812. Word was taken to his father, whereupon he cried and bartered with God on his lips, demonishing the last to have bothered to be present at his dying hour. Within a month, the old Marquess and his favoured heir passed.

Fitzwilliam’s mother relocated to the London townhouse with her personal staff, supported by an allowance from the Wellesley estate; leaving the young and newly appointed Marquess to fumble through his father and brother’s belongings, taking the reins of the manor and its duties. Delving into drink, Fitz’s grief was pockmarked by ruining all that he could. To play the game, each year, all with another infatuation until the prospect of marriage became too uncomfortably close.

Returning to Hertfordshire to indulge the country air after a long stint in London and Bath, amid tending to his overdue responsibilities, Fitzwilliam has yet to seek forgiveness but throw a wrench in the works of those idyllic cottage dwellers.

Personality

Maintaining decorum in the face of scrutiny and minding her words in the face of judgement, Mina does do her best to save face. In earlier years, perhaps, she may have watched her words a bit more carefully; no witty undertones or dubious underpinnings to her intentions. Decidedly straying from much of the decidedily docile and genteel sensibilities of most young women, Mina's version of such is a bit louder and a lot more rambunctious, at times. This is not without a heavy dosage of restraint, of course, but it does paint the pretty picture of a high ranking women with nothing better to do than make the very most of her life. She is humorous with a pursed lip and opinionated to gossip and nod along, truly coming into herself in the face of competitiveness or liveliness. Parties are her bread and butter, and hosting them is the spice of life.

There are times when reckless abandon is adopted, and with it a sense of frivolous excitement. Rather than complicated actions to keep her mind from ever feeling the boredom of stagnancy, these are moments of true and utter self; the very thing that is taught to keep withheld and humble. Whilst pushing suitors to the edge of their complacency this comes out, and with a carved smile she enjoy seeing what sorts of fun could be had; and god forbid ever truly settling down. The part of her that thrives in game and sports is closely in tune with this self as well, forever chasing the high of winning.

Dourness and melancholia do little to stimulate Mina, who much prefers to keep moods lively and perfumed. History

It was through coincidence and proximity that Earl Frederick De Lacy found himself enraptured by a wealthy merchant's daughter, Delphine, and blossomed a marriage and love to last beyond life itself. The daughter of Ugandan fourth generation immigrants to France, propserous merchants and business owners for several generations now, Delphine would be ushered into the life of a Countess, and push out into the world three beautiful children. Philomène, the eldest, was welcomed in the early summer on one of the Earl's main estate in Lincoln. A hardy baby, Mina cried little, though she did manage to escape any sort of confinement often: be it a room or anyone's arms. Having a little sister only a few years later did manage to temper the child, and even in her young years Mina tried to mother her little sister Minney, bringing the two girls close together.

Half a decade later a baby boy would come into the world, and with it Countess De Lacy would surrender her life to save the child. Able to say goodbye to her girls, it would be Mina that would remember the event so closely. Smelling the sweat on her mother's skin, the stale blood hanging in the air; the smile on her face passing into oblivion itself. Mourning would be a quiet time for the family, Earl De Lacy busying himself with business and politics, finding whatever excuse he could to be out of the place the love of his life died. Stuck with the staff, Mina would continue to mother her little sister as best as she could; brushing out her curls, spending time with her, and continuing the lessons that their mother had set up for them. Still just a child herself, Mina grew up too fast, perhaps. Struggling to come to her own self, all the while managing her little sister, they would look onto their baby brother for some hope for a future.

Earl De Lacy would come about here and there, slowly returning to a presence among his children. Their mother's family came to visit here and there, funding a few expentures for the girls, but it was mostly their father's family who swept in to save the girls. Organising proper tutors, proper dress fittings and regular trips to London to integrate into the society there, by the time the Earl proved himself decent and cured enough of his heartbreak to look at his children again, they'd already been moulded into promising young ladies. Philomène took to the high life, spending most of her free time honing in her skills and forcing her sister to play Pall Mall until afternoon bled to evening.

Mina took to becoming a young lady rather seriously, but elected to have her fun with it. Through the frivolous doting of her grandparents, she saw and did many things. Once old enough to form some opinion of herself that was not pure etiquette and lessons, she knew that she would much prefer to focus her energies into her sister, and into her brother. The latter would always remind Philomène of what the family lost, and the closeness that had burned away with death, but she would not give up on her brother like their father had.

By the time little Philip was twelve, Earl De Lacy had enough sense to scoop his son under his wing to properly groom him for duty. Maintaining an arm's distance from her father, they seemed to all exist in separate homes for some time. He never remarried, even after all the time passed.

In the years after, jumping between estates all owned by De Lacy and his family and London, Philomène would work endlessly to perfect her reputation. Afraid, maybe, of loving and losing, she prided herself on being needlessly picky for a suitor; much to her father and grandmother's chagrin. Still, there could be little to complain about when she was so well received by just about everyone who came into contact. It was a careful distraction, unbeknownst to Mina even, that she was providing fodder to avoid ever having to marry. Not out of a lack of love, but a fear. To keep all at arm's length and to enjoy the dances of life was a grateful way to live, according to her. Besides, all of her energy that could be spent on wasting time on her own future could better be used on her siblings, and providing them the authority and maternal guidance needed to make a life for their own.

Of the most recent season spent in London, Minney became faint and sick, resulting in quite a few fainting spells. Seeking the all too familiar country air in hopes of a cure, and a break from the hustle and bustle, the family has found themselves in Hertfordshire on a family estate, one that hasn't been touched in many years. A project in itself, restoring the former country home and land to its prime, all that Mina wants to do is return to the city.

Holding herself to the nigh-unattainable standards set upon women, Charity has long curated her behaviour by the aid of tutors and fear of high society’s ire. Personality

In comparison to her frequent tension headaches from handling the demands of family, to the sniffles and colds developed from closely compact ballrooms, Itty is a veritable force of nature. Not so easily bending to the whims of others, her strength was found in that of literature and tomes of history, where her mind cultivated carefully images of Eleanore of Aquitaine and Joan d’Arc. Piousness, strength and craft interwoven with the very fabric of women who gained their power without thoughts to relinquish it. Tough and sly as they come, studying under her grandmother as a wealthy woman in possession of her own lands and wealth, Charity is torn by the fabric of her morals and the duty to her father.

Temperamental and unafraid to discreetly show such fissures in the dangerous irked cold-shoulder or biting comment, Itty seeks a wealthy man to elevate herself and pay off her father. But such a man must be easily swayed, a contractual agreement reached mayhaps by some nouveau-riche merchant who wishes to have access to the circles of the aristocracy. Nevertheless, this biting logic is only means to an end, an easy facade to disguise how frightened she is, as Itty feels herself being backed into a corner without escape.

Generally good natured with a habitual maternity shown to her younger siblings, Lady Fairfax adores most living creatures without fail. From keeping her own racing pigeons and doves, to dormice, showing the hunting dogs great affection and feeding the barn cats far too much that they’re greatly disinterested by all else. Easily brought to laughter, her humour is one sure-fire method to gain favour.
History

The daughter of Viscount Fairfax and second of six siblings with her elder brother passing from cot death in his early life⁠—the heir was lost, leaving five daughters to contend for their slice of dowry to subsist on. While her childhood was untroubled for the most part, youth lost in one long haze of summer where one is enamoured by games and disdainful of teachers; girlhood was a blessing of ignorance to the financial despair of her family. Viscount Fairfax proved a man of luxury, his addiction being the card tables and horses, throwing money into financial drains as he lost thousands on a mining opportunity which turned up naught even coal, nor the precious jewels he’d been promised as a potential shareholder.

Their family struggled on loans, friends and family stepping forward with occasional support to pay off the children’s clothes and tutors. The Dowager Countess, once wife to the Earl of Suffolk, stepped in frequently to bring her grandchildren beneath her wing, having never quite forgiven her daughter’s heart for choosing such a miserable match that’d only brought her melancholy and ache as he squandered at the gentlemen’s lounge.

Charity’s malaise only began to show itself as of age fourteen, with many physician’s citing it to be stress; hair coming loose and migraines putting her to her sickbed, always at risk of temperatures and aches. Thus, more than once, she was frequently sent with one of her younger sisters to stay with the Dowager where the quiet attention of her grandmother improved her condition until she was sent back. A recurrent and cyclical illness, brought on by the presence of her squabbling parents and the fate of her sisters.

To marry and marry well, placed as a temptation like something to be consumed until her title became that of her husbands. Pay off the debts, pay the dowries, give her mother the gentle retirement she deserved. After their debut, her closest sister in age and temperament, Faith, married quickly to that of an Officer at her mother’s celebration and the Viscount’s thinly disguised disapproval. Escaping the sleepy countryside to follow her husband from camp to camp, where the guns rattled and foreign lands went unexplored.

This only exacerbated the desperation of her father.

Aged eighteen, out in society, Charity withdrew to the comfort of her grandmother to act as her companion, only returning at the demand of the Viscount as her twenty-fourth birthday approached⁠—and not even the Countesses’ circles had secured her a husband of good financial means.

This ought to be her last season as a fresh-faced girl, before the encroaching years of spinsterhood clasp their shackles and deign her at most a governess⁠—and at least, a beggar upon her grandmother’s sympathy. It is this year of 1815, Charity Fairfax has made her decision to hunt a fortune.

Quite the opposite from her older sister, and often compared, her childhood was spent being shaped into the woman she was today. Sort of. Mature and well-mannered, Charlotte still had her moments where she saw no issue speaking her mind when felt necessary to do so. In as much as a respectful manner of course. She was much more refined and subdued than in her teenage years, but she had the same lively nature with such an allure that could grab the attention of others. Charlotte is an accomplished woman, charming and confident, knowledgeable and witty. Naturally a man in need of a bride would want to court her. But there was a reason why her previous courtships had failed, to the dismay of her family. Charlotte knew she didn’t want to marry just for status or fortune, as her mother desperately pushed for, but rather for a relationship based on true compatibility and affection.

Charlotte was born into a gentry class family as the youngest daughter. She has an older brother who is five years older than her and an older sister that is two years older. She had a close relationship with her siblings growing up, especially her sister Lilian as they were only two years apart. Charlotte spent her childhood learning French, reading, playing the pianoforte and singing, art, and gaining an adequate education. Her mother always wanted her children to be well rounded and skilled. The Montgomerys have lived on their estate in Hertfordshire for the past several generations, their small fortune being passed down the lineage.

Mr. Montgomery married a woman who was equal his status, maintaining the family’s acceptable reputation in Hertfordshire, which was of extreme importance to both Mr. and Mrs. Montgomery. Nothing was more important to them than ensuring that both their daughters married to men who were their equals or above them in fortune. This was all to secure their futures since they wouldn’t be able to inherit the estate. Mrs. Montgomery was always mostly worried about her youngest daughter due to her nature, causing the two of them to clash frequently. She would compare her daughters, wanting Charlotte to be more like Lilian, gentle and docile without complaint. Over time this put a strain on Charlotte’s relationship with her parents. She always felt as if she was more of an inconvenience to them more than the rest of her siblings.   It’s well known that Charlotte had two suitors in the past at different times who were willing to ask for her hand in marriage, but she turned them both down, men who she found to be intolerable and had no compatibility with. These declinations of marriage led to gossip amongst the townsfolk. People wondered why she would turn down the proposals of two perfectly suitable men. But Charlotte knew that if she was going to marry, it was going to be with someone that she could at least tolerate and hold a decent conversation with that didn’t bore her to death. Someone that she could be happy with.

Winifred was born into a rich family that owned a manor a few miles outside of Hertfordshire, Belleview Manor. Her father was a baron while her mother was the daughter of a wealthy German merchant. In her early childhood, she was brought up like any other lady. Her governess taught her reading, writing, pianoforte, singing, dancing, and sewing. Winifred was known to sneak off to her father's library at times and read books about ancient wars and government. Her father caught her nose deep in those books quite often and would call her his "scholarly little lady". She was always much closer to her father than her mother but that didn't make it any easier when her mother fell ill. Winifred was not able to see her in her final days as the doctor feared the fever might spread. Her last glimpse of her mother was when her face was being covered by a sheet.

Her father became much more protective over her once her mother had passed away. He also began to bring her up in a way usually more common of a boy. He taught her to hunt and ride. However, because he was so much more protective over her, she was not allowed to go out into society at the normal time for ladies. It wasn't until she was eighteen that her father decided to bring her out of her sheltered homelife and into society. Winifred was thrust into a world she had never seen before. It was terrifying but enchanting. The dazzling balls and court drama. She did her best to keep her distance from the more nefarious parts of court life.

While other ladies pining over the handsome gentlemen they danced with, only the ladies caught Winifred's eyes. It was terrifying for her, she believed there was something wrong with her. She vowed to keep her feelings to herself. She would marry a lord, she did not need to be happy in her marriage. Winifred began to become worried when her father continued not to remarry year after year. He had no heir, no one to take Belleview once he was gone. When he did die suddenly, everyone was shocked by his will. Winifred was to become the lady of Belleview in her own right.

Philippe was born into a rich family that earn their name through being in the military for generations. In his youth, his father was not around much because he was serving in different battles. His mother was there physically but not emotionally. She had gone into a deep melancholic episode after giving birth to his older brother and had never escaped this sadness. So Phillippe was raised mostly by a governess who he grew rather close to. She taught him how to take care of himself. He also had a tutor who taught him to read, write, speak various languages (English, Greek, and Latin). However, when his father returned from the war, he thought that Philippe was too weak. He fire both the tutor and the governess and decided he would teach him himself. He was brutal, criticized him for everything he did. When he was so tired he taught he would pass out, his father would scream at him to keep working. "No Beauséjour will be weak," he would say constantly.

When Philippe was a teenager, he enlisted in the military because his father forced him to continue on the tradition. He was immediately sent into battle. He saw things he never wanted to see. He wanted to leave, he was afraid he would be killed. However, the fear of being disowned by his family was enough to keep him in battle. He learned how to handle himself and became focused on one goal, stay alive. He sadly would not come home for more than a few months every couple of years. He earned nasty wounds in the French invasion of Russia, which got badly infected. This is when he was finally allowed to take a longer leave at home.

His father seemed proud of him when he returned, though he insisted that his son would return immediately to the battlefield after healing from his wounds. He was bedridden for months, watched over by his mother and a doctor who did whatever they could to keep his fever down. He did finally recover after almost a year. However, he earned a permanent limp and now fall badly ill at least once a year. Philippe's mother was finally able to persuade his father that he was not ready to return to battle, that it would be nothing but a death sentence. In his time at home, he focused on hunting and making sure his skills stayed sharp, even though his physical stamina never returned to how it was before.

Philippe now travels to England with his little sister, tasked to look over her until she is married to her betrothed. He would do anything to break up this marriage because he believes his sister is far too young to be married off.

Quiet and considerate to his elders, he spares them his typical glooming and glowering that everybody else is victim to. Most know him as a rather sad fellow otherwise, always keeping to himself in his cottage when not spending sorrowful evenings at the pub. Those who have known him longer, however, or are local to Hertfordshire, would have seen him when he was far more livelier about five years ago. He is reliable, always giving to a neighbour, and loves his horses rather dearly.

Other: The farm he owns is meagre income, barely worth the cost to upkeep it. The grounds beyond are grown out of control. The cottage is falling apart, his father having been the last person who put effort and skills into fixing it up and maintaining it. Nicholas can do the simple things, but woodwork and anything that doesn’t prolong the life of him or his horses is unknown to him. The land is fairly expansive, however, though most of it is unused space that isn’t even fenced.

He has about four horses at the farm currently, left of the twelve that were once there around the time his father died. They have either been sold or given, and if any remain local he visits them regularly. Skilled in care for horses and all manner of training and riding, he is gifted with managing a horse’s shoe; his own shoes falling apart in the meantime.

A dour man in most circumstances, Cole’s face is often painted by some scowl. Broody in expression, his boyish youth has been caved in by years spent miserly drinking his grief and burying the pain. He shaves regularly, however, one of his meticulous habits; sporting a pair of sideburns.

He dresses just as inconsiderate, holes in cotton blouses seeking to multiply by the weeks. His shoes fall apart, strapped by leather and sewn by thick thread, and he does not buy a new pair. What nicer clothes he has were loaned, or given by a friendly face who simply wanted an exchange of labour for payment. He sometimes smells, that of the stables and fresh dirt, but this is mixed with the stink of alcohol when he is at his worst. Most of the time, however, he does freshen up enough to mask at least the less formidable smells.

Of the earth, and twice toiled by despair, his posture and gait show this. Still, he always manages to hold a cat-like grin on his face when amused, even if it’s at another’s expense (or pure foolishness).
Personality

Experience has marked him, and it has not been kind. Grief, to him, is an everlasting pain. Were he literate enough to compose poetry, or prose, he probably would have penned a hundred pieces by now. Alas, with a fairly average education for his social class, it is reading enough to understand contracts of buying and selling for him.

Not one to enjoy frivolous or fanciful things, the idea of loosening up is best seen to with alcohol and a full belly. He does not dance, he does not charm, and he certainly doesn’t think himself compelling enough to woo any wife. A simple man of simple pleasures, Nicholas attests that he doesn’t need much. Yet it is an overwhelming indecisiveness that keeps him from continuing with life in the way it is once was. Despite all proclamations that he is fine, which he says often, he is stuck. Entirely and emotionally he is stuck in a version of himself he doesn’t quite like.

Though he does manage to make light of things, a glimpse of a happier person. He is rather snarky at times, far more sarcastic than he may want to appear, but it is a repetitive pattern of occasional misery that he can’t seem to kick. Joviality is not beyond him, but sometimes it can be a little more malevolent than initially intended. Usually when he realizes he’s gone too far, been a bit too mean, he’ll drag his feet in the process of apologizing.

All in all he’s not a terrible person to be around, and alcohol does start him out a lot nicer (before the inevitable depressive slip). He is mean spirited but not without empathy; sometimes a little impulsive in it all. It’s all because he never wants to open up again, never wants to be as vulnerable as he was at his lowest. The fear of that is enough to force a man back into his corner of retreat.
History

If you would ask Nicholas, he would remark that his life really hadn't began until he met his future fiancée. This statement is often met at the end of his pint, swirling the last vestiges of it into the depths of a steel-fisted mug.

His story otherwise begins quarter a century prior, born red faced and twisting in his mother's embrace on a cool autumn night. He was the only child in a union of loving parents who wished to fill their home with the pattering of tiny feet. This fate would not find them, as Nicholas' mother passed some days after his birth, due to declining health issues from the labour and a sickness she'd never kicked. He was a fussy baby, left to his father who did his best despite the mourning. The neighbours loaned their aid when they could, understanding that a child needs its mother, and that a father who owns a struggling farm needed whatever he could to get on.

He grew up rather well, all things considered. His father never wavered, even in the most tumultous of times, and provided Nicholas the care and guiding hand needed. As soon as he was able, he wanted to help out. From tending to the few horses on their farm, helping pull buckets of feed and water across the distance of the waterpump, to shoveling hay, the young boy did what was needed. Never complaining, not once, Nicholas' face seemed to be permanently kept to a smile. Life was nicer, kinder when you were a boy.

As he grew up, he remained steadfast to his father, as his father had done to him. Proving to be an excellent second in command to his father's work at a nearby estate's stables, his fondness for the horses rapidly developed at this time too. He was sure, truly, that even if he had no wife to call his own one day, he'd be content to raise horses until he was grey. They were hardy, gentle creatures when they wanted; and rather rambunctious and mischievous when they pleased, too. At times Nicholas found himself far more comfortable with his horses than children his age, though his father said that was simply because he'd never taken a chance.

It was when he did, however, that he met her. Anne. She was a beautiful, witty girl that he knew to be a seamstress's daughter. With deft and lithe hands, Anne always mended the patches in his trousers and shirts. She always did so without any sort of pay, preferring that he make it up by amusing her with walks through the town.

There it was that their love would bloom, so strongly and in a short period of time. He fell hard for Anne, promising her in weeks of their time together that he'd make her his wife, and he'd build her a sewing room, anything she'd want, when they lived together. Their relationship lasted a few months, remarkable really, before Nicholas at 19 had scrapped up enough cash to make some semblance of a ring for her. It was a shrewd little thing, woven cord and dried herb, sentimental at best. He'd said it was a promise for something shiny and silver one day, or gold if she'd wanted.

She'd been just fine with the one he'd given.

Things seemed good for a while after, until Anne became sick. It started out as a cough, then became coughing fits and fainting spells. Her limbs became weak, her constitution frail. The fistfuls of blood she'd present after coughing for a while was evidence enough that something was wrong.

He stayed by her bedside all the while, sleeping in a hard chair every night. She lasted a couple of months. The day before she died she seemed as awake and full of life as she'd been the day they'd met, her cheeks rosy and her palms warm.

Then when she'd gone in the night, Nicholas broke. He cried, mourning harder than he thought capable. He lost sight of much, with only his father's hand truly being the one to keep him afloat. He became a shadow of himself, regretting any and all sentimentalities of the heart for how much hurt it caused. It took about a year for him to become somewhat normal.

But then his father got sick. This one was symptomped by issues for many years, things that Nicholas had seen. He lasted longer than Anne, that was for sure. But watching his father waste away was, perhaps, the second worst thing than his love passing between his fingers. His father finally passed away three years later, a mere shell of the great man he once was.

Nicholas, at this point, had already lost all that he had. There were his horses, his job, and the home. Few friends that he made saw him at his worst at this time.

At the very least, in the last couple of years, Nicholas has managed to simmer a bit. Dutiful as always, there is little room for distraction, if not to try and make the most of his own little life.

He made sure that she was provided for, and on her birthday and Christmas, he would send her gifts, nice frocks and bonnets, and he sent her to school, making sure got the best education a young lady could have. but he was never attentive to her outside of inquiring about her health and wellness.

Her mother, on the other, passed away when Cordelia was only nine, at which point her father sent her away to school. But before she left, her mother had instilled in her a great love of art in all of its forms. The one that stuck with Cordelia the most and the one she treasures most dearly is music, particularly singing. She has a lovely voice and she finds herself singing quietly to herself throughout the day, if ever she finds herself alone. Her timid and meek nature prevent her from sharing that talent with others. All she has of her mother is the same passion for the arts and her name, her father never seeing fit for her to take his surname.

Tristan is an unassuming, polite and amiable young man and is mostly just happy to be alive. He takes each day as it comes and believes the best of anyone. Although he is mostly agreeable, Tristan can become alarmingly stubborn if he feels a friend has been unfairly treated and as a youngster it was not uncommon for him to get into scraps at the parish workhouse in defence of someone more vulnerable.

Tristan is quite the dreamer, and although he rarely had lessons in reading at the workhouse, he dreams of one day being able to read all the wonderful stories he has heard of. He is an earnest, but not always honest person. It was not always smart to speak his mind as a child, so skirting around the truth became somewhat of a defence mechanism for him. Most of all, Tristan is a hopeless romantic and believes wholeheartedly in true love.
History

The names of Tristan’s parents are unknown. His mother died shortly after childbirth, but the little boy was left outside the parish church and was taken in as a foundling by the parish beadle.As is the case with most orphans, the parish raised him alongside other children and as soon as he was old enough to work, he was put to work in the workhouse until his early teenage years.

Life at the workhouse was hard, strict and often unhappy. The young boy saw many of his friends take ill or pass away due to malnutrition. However Tristan would always maintain his optimism and an innate faith in redemption and humanity. Amongst his peers he was a natural leader and keeper of morale.
Once he had turned thirteen, he was sold to be an apprentice to a kindly wheelwright called Mr Wainwright. He has lived and worked alongside the ageing man ever since, seeing him as something of a father figure.

Occupation/Social Class: Like his father before him, Abram owes his wealth and standing to the East India Company (EIC) whose dominion over the subcontinent remains as yet unchallenged. While his father had been a sepoy stationed at the Barrackpore Cantonment serving in the company's many wars against the native princes - the son would ply the trade of an interpreter; and eventually as a go-between for various commercial parties. Currently engaged on behalf of E.D. Sassoon & Co., Ltd. managing their maritime interests in the home isles, especially in regards to the employment of various Lascar seamen needing lodging in British ports in between voyages.
Reputation: Young Abram had made a home for himself in Northern Ireland with the patronage of one Captain Edward Hussey Blake, himself raised to a baronetcy in Donegal. For a time he would take up independent charges as an estate manager, picking up French on top of the numerous other languages in his repertoire, and gain enough of a stable income to entertain the idea of procuring a wife. The marriage would take place at the Blake estate; to a Lady Elizabeth Thoyts. Baptismal records of the parish show that Abram had converted to Protestantism just a few weeks prior to the engagement. Lady Elizabeth would pass away not long after, from a miscarriage. Although the brief union seems to have been a happy one, strange rumours follow Mr. Abram from Ireland; people speak of his near elopement, accuse the man some oriental sanctioned practice of bigamy, and question his business dealings on behalf of the EIC.

Abram is a rather lean man, taking care to keep himself active despite the long hours being cloistered in his study that the job requires of him. He is usually up to date on the latest fashions of the day; but on special occasions he would dust off his sherwani, a fusion between the British frock coat and Indian designs - indicative of the growing composite culture of the subcontinent. He has a barely noticeable birthmark on the underside of his chin, a scar that looks much like a three pointed star, which he hides (via distraction) by wearing a regency-style cravat with a Grafton collar while on business outside of his estate. He is fond of perfumes and frequently imports attar from the famous city of Kannauj in the United Provinces and from inland Arabia through the British possession of Aden. Years of focused study has given him the comportment of a British gentleman, and all the airs that go with such a title; in a fraught attempt to be more English than the English themselves.
Personality

While not a complete dunce when it comes to keeping up a conversation, Abram's more of a quiet sort. Content spending his spare time in the study working on his memoirs; one that doubles as a travelogue with colorful descriptions of Turkish coffee houses, of smoking hookah with the Nawab of Arcot and a surprisingly eventful account of encountering Bantu tribals while navigating through the Cape of Good Hope, all the while carrying contraband gunpowder aboard the HMS Viceroy. Despite not being the best of company in group settings, Abram does have a tendency to make fast, often lifelong friendships. It is perhaps his keen eye for observation and some skill with the written word that endears him to others in such a way.

Besides this, Abram had always been drawn to horse riding and hunting, the preferred pastime of EIC employees as they retreated into the hills in the summer months. He is also a decent cricketer, a sport he'd similarly picked up in the interest of keeping fit. While the benefits to the character from team sports is often overstated; these experiences did help Abram socialise and form connections with his betters, learning the various ways and means by which to comport himself around those of a superior station. A lesson which would prove invaluable for an enterprising upstart such as himself.
History

Abram was born the son of a lowly sepoy in the Sylhet division of the province of Bengal, although this is a fact about himself that he rarely lets go. To all excepting the most trusted confidant; Abram was the scion of some colourful Nawab, down on his luck, or perhaps even of Anglo-Indian extraction. His early childhood seems to have faded in time, even to himself. The only incident of note from this unhappy period of his life was when Abram would be taken in by a Baptist missionary by the name of William Carey, a stern but fair man, who'd take over the responsibility of his education upon the death of his father (a kindness, the reasons for which Abram himself cannot account for). Carey and his ministry had need of natives who would be able to preach to the common folk, and encouraged the boy to learn other Indian languages besides the one he had been born with. The child was a quick study, and by 15 had a firm grasp over Farsi, which had become the lingua franca of the subcontinent at the time.

His skill with languages would quickly help ingratiate himself with the EIC, who would use him as a go-between for the company and the various merchants and zamindars it had dealings with. It was in this capacity that he would meet Captain Edward Hussey Blake, the son of a prominent English landholder in Ulster, Ireland. A man who would soon become 'his best friend'. The two youths were seldom seen without each other, and when Edward resigned as a captain in the Bengal Presidency's army; it was naturally assumed that Abram would be accompanying his patron back to Ireland.

The years he'd spend in Ireland were perhaps the most peaceful and happy moments of his life. Edward had inherited the vast lands of his father, rather unexpectedly; due to the sinking of a ship carrying his eldest brother and their family back from Quebec. As a result he'd employed Abram as an estate manager in Donegal, while Edward himself managed the family's shipping fortunes. These days were spent in much leisure, with Edward and his wife Mary, and their children whose wardship Abram had automatically assumed. He would in time find the will to be married as well, to a Lady Elizabeth Thoyts who was by all accounts a comely woman, possessing much good sense besides. Tragedy would strike the Roy household soon after this happy event however, as the Lady Elizabeth would leave her mortal coil due to a miscarriage, followed soon after by their son, newly christened; Henry Edward Roy, owing to a terrible bout of jaundice.

Perhaps seeking a change of scenery after that unfortunate year, Abram would travel to Dublin, where he would enter the shipping business. Initially being contracted by Irish businessmen from the city, before switching to E.D. Sassoon & Co. a company run by a prominent Jewish family from Bombay. Having relocated to London as a result, he finds himself needing to travel to Hertfordshire for some company business, lasting for perhaps the entirety of the season. The connections of his employers have helped him to acquire a rather spacious residence at Chalsey Manor, which is certain to gather the attention of the people of the county.
