Dr Alex Tanis is a prodigy in Linguistics and Decryption. He lives on an estate that has been in his family since before the Revolutionary War. The estate looks like something out of a horror flick, a haunted mansion. Most of the mansion is unused and closed off.
His manservant/butler/driver/bodyguard, Eric Blackwell convinced him to rent out some of the room to grad students.
Alex spends most of his time at home down in his basement where there is a family Library filled with books and scrolls dating back to antiquity. Most of the older stuff is strictly off-limits and kept locked up.
One of the sections of the Library is separate from the rest. Like the off-limits section, ths one is also locked. More interesting was the fact that the door was camouflaged. That was enough to get Alex and Eric’s attention. After some debate Alex decided to go ahead and open the door. The key to opening it was, of course, a multi-lingual cipher. But Alex is a genius. It took him three days to get the door open.
The room was a living quarters for one person, perhaps a librarian who worked for the Tanis family. The furniture was covered with sheets. The room had a Murphy bed, rolltop desk, bookshelves, an old grandfather clock, a phonograph, and other antiques.
The most amazing thing of all in the room was the Mirror. It had been covered by a sheet. The sides were supported by Roman columns of marble. At their base were marble planters from which dead vines once grew. The frame was bronze, completely untarnished and unscratched. The mirror cast a reflection, but oddly subdued in color. Someone had the nerve to touch the surface of the mirror. There was a discharge of energy and the surface of the mirror shimmered, becoming fluid. The offending hand was withdrawn immediately.
Rules of the Mirror
Each time a person enters it, they come out on the other side in an alternate universe. When they enter the mirror in the alternate reality, they return back to the prime-universe.
Every trip through the mirror takes the person to a random alternate universe, there is no saying how many there might be, and there is no way to choose the destination.
Objects and people need to be touching each other to go to the same alternate universe. If they go one behind the other, each one is sent to a different parallel universe.
Time Dilation is 180 times. Which means, if they leave the prime-universe at 9:00 AM, they will enter an alternate universe at 9:00 AM on the same day. If they stay in that reality for 180 minutes, i.e. till 12PM, and return, only 1 minute would have passed in the prime-universe, i.e. it would be 9:01 AM.
The mirror works in that specific location and that particular angle. If the angle is changed, the portal closes.
Plot
As suggested by the tags of the RP, things could get a little strange. Much will depend on the goals of the characters you create. If you create a character with no purpose, I should warn you that it will likely become a casualty.
The Mirror is a tool. But it is also a temptation. Could you get rich by stealing from other probabilities? Could you discover ways to do things that are impossible in our reality? Could you alter our reality? Of course, that would be like trying to play God. When has that ever turned out well?
But you could use the time dilation to study, create works of art, invent.
