the plot.
Twenty years ago in the Kingdom of Avalion, on the night of the full moon, the King was dying. Betrayed by his own knights, he was left bleeding out on his throne. This attack wasn't without reason, either. Over the years, the King had grown weak in his policies. He was too lenient, too forgiving. Worst of all, he believed in the spirits of the woods. Magical creatures that were there long before the Kingdom.
He was too kind to them.
So those closest to him took a dagger to his heart. As he died, the King sputtered and coughed blood. His words were barely audible. He raised his bloodied hand and pointed upward, his eyes rolling back. An inhuman voice rumbled from his chest, a black fog leaking from his lips.
"Betrayed by my own knights, I curse this night. I curse those born in this moonlight with gifts from the spirits, to one day rise as my saviors. In twenty one years, you will reap what you've sowed. One day, I will rise again."
As the black fog faded from his lips, the knight closest to him twisted the dagger. A sputtering cough later, and the King was dead. The clock struck midnight, and soon the screams began.
Although no one in the Kingdom could have possibly known of his death yet, wailing cries of panic could be heard in every village across the line. The moment the midnight arrived, mothers and fathers were finding cradles empty. Babes vanished from their arms, gone with nothing but a small wisp of black smoke. Even as everyone in the village searched for the missing children, no one could find a single trace of them. Hours passed, and soon the sun began to rise. As light crept across the dejected villages, a sudden cry broke the silence. Not the wail of an adult, but one of a child. Families rushed back into their homes to find their children returned, seemingly unharmed.
The only difference was the crescent shaped scar that had appeared somewhere on them.
It didn't take long for word of the vanishing children to reach the Capital of the Kingdom, where the knights had covered up the death of the King. Surely, they thought, that the King's curse wasn't real? The Spirits of the forest had long since lost their powers, ever since they had stopped worshipping them. Even if they did have powers still, why would they help the King? As the rumors began to spread of the marked children, the knights made a decision.
Those who were marked were to be gathered up and imprisoned. Although they couldn't outright kill the children, they could keep them locked away.
When the decree was ordered, it didn't take long for families to flee with their children. They'd move from village to village, covering up the marks on their child the best they could. Some of them succeeded, while others did not. The children who were caught were brought to different prisons, kept away from anyone like them. Sometimes they broke out of the prisons, while other times they perished alone in the cold walls.
While the Marked were slowly rounded up, the knights established the Cerulean Guard. Although another King soon rose to the throne, he was nothing more than a puppet. The Guard controlled every aspect of the Kingdom, and ruled with an iron grip. There was no nuance in crimes anymore. A wrong look at a Guard member got you thrown in prison for a week. As the years passed, stories of the Marked children changed from fact to fiction. Bards would sing of them as if they never existed in the first place.
But the Marked were alive and well, and they were changing. As their curses grew, so did their powers.
-----
In current times, the Cerulean Guard is all the people of Avalion can remember. Twenty years had passed since their establishment, and those who could remember life before the Guard were thoroughly silenced. Yet in the recent weeks, they've grown even more strict. More and more people are thrown and locked away in their prisons, with little to no explanation. No one knew of the curse the old King had casted, and that the Marked children were now adults.
Adults cursed with horns and wings, who could summon fire with a flick of their wrist or twist the howling wind at their command. As the 21st year grew closer and closer, it was only a matter of time before the Marked were summoned to the woods.
It was only there, hidden behind massive trees and growling wolves, would they become the knights they were destined to be. The clock was ticking, and the Guard was waiting.

the cast.
the Marked
The Marked are children who were born twenty years ago, during a single cycle of the moon. On the night the old King died, these children were cursed and marked, destined to one day avenge him. At first, there was nothing obvious that was different about these children. Yet as they continued to grow, so did the curses. Some began to sprout horns or wings, whiles others found their fingers constantly scorched by the flames they could produce. Each Marked is unique in their curses and physical differences, but they're all brought to the Manor to train under mysterious guidance.
the Betrayer
Captured at a young age, the Betrayer is a Marked who has lived their entire life under the watchful gaze of the Cerulean Guard. Although they grew up in the castle and lived in luxury, they were constantly reminded of their purpose. To find the other Marked children, and bring them to justice before they brought ruin to the Kingdom. When they finally turned twenty and were called to the Manor like the other Marked, the Betrayer took up a guise to blend in among them and find out their weaknesses. Though the longer they stay at the Manor, the more uncertain they become in their role...

the rules.
1.
As always, be kind to your fellow RPers. All rules of RPN obviously apply. Please be 18+.
2.
This is not first-come, first serve. There will be an application process, and characters will be chosen based on their depth and complexity. I won't be accepting a set amount of people, but please note you may only apply for two characters. Realistic face-claims will used, though you will allowed to use illustrations alongside the face-claim to show unnatural mutations the curses might of caused.
3.
Be able to post at least once a week. Activity is the biggest killer of group RPs, so let us try to avoid that common trap. This is also an advanced RP, and I expect multiple paragraphs per post. If you don't think you can handle that, then this might not be the RP for you.
4.
Discord will be used for this RP, and mandatory if you are accepted.
5.
As you might of noticed, one of the roles is listed as the 'Betrayer.' This is a special role that'll go to one of our accepted players, but you cannot apply for it. Once characters are accepted, this role will be assigned randomly to a player who desires to potentially have their character be the Betrayer. If you think you might want to put your hat in the ring for this role, indicate so in your character sheet.
