So I see there are some 50 something listed 'robots'. What exactly are robots? How are those kinds of accounts made and WHY do people make them? Is there some sort of benefit to having a bot account?

These are actually "crawlers" that are used by various search engines.

Basically, search engines use crawler/spider bots to track websites and reflect updates on search results and build their database. It's how they actually provide search results. You can see what the robots are on RpNation here; Current Visitors | RpNation
