Futuristic PROSPER, AS TAU SHALL! (40k Expansionist RP!)

Supporter
WELCOME COMMANDERS, TO SECTOR "SAVRIS DELTA"

Shas'El,

Your Mantas have been deposited on the spinward front of the newly surveyed sector Savris Delta. (That's the right side of the map to be specific) -- Column 7 as indicated on the map below.

Send forth your probes to various subsectors and gather information about the planets and installations in this new frontier. Solve crises and dilemmas where you can find them that are obstacles to lifeforms joining the greater good. You have limited resources but almost unlimited agency in how you carry out your objectives, commander -- Represent the Tau'Va and honor the Ethereals in your actions to spread the Greater Good.

TURN 1 IS OPEN:
Players are encouraged to introduce their characters/factions as well as declare what subsectors they are sending probes to, to bring back information.
Task forces MAY be deployed anywhere in the 7th column, but sending personnel or forces to alien worlds without intel is deeply discouraged.
Once information on a planet is gathered and it's obstacles to assimilation understood, You superiors have no doubt you will prevail in your tasks ahead.

Beware -- Ork "Squeaker-Squigs" -- a kind of Greenskin rallying probe, have been detected in "empty hexes" in the NE quadrant of this sector. This presents an unknown but real chance that Orks will at least cursorily inspect this sector in the future. Large Scale war with the Orks is NOT sought or encouraged. Other spacefaring races may be present in the sector, though there is little evidence to support any large scale presence of Tech Level 5 technology that could directly compare to ours.

Be on your guard, and remember both the doctrine of the Patient Hunter, and that of the Killing Blow.

GOOD LUCK COMMANDERS! PROSPER, AS TAU SHALL!

Act I: Foundation

MANTRA - 43, nicknamed the Anda'ta'lissera or 'battle brother' by the crew, blares no roars as it eases out of warp onto yet another sector of unexplored space. A new frontier, the Savris Delta lies open with seemingly boundless opportunities for the spread of Tau'va or the 'greater good'. Having been recalled to Tau space proper after singlehandedly claiming a sept for the empire, the ship finds herself retrofitted and up to date, with fresh new faces joining the bridge and auxiliary teams. Commander Kessan, having scoffed at the suggestion that he attend a public ceremony to receive his commendation, instead requested that he and his ship be immediately reassigned. And so, he finds himself on the bridge about to order a system survey of a new sector, as the helmsman eases them into a stationary position and battle stations ready themselves for any eventuality.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
Command(s) Summary & Additional Goals.
  • Conduct a system survey of Sector 0609. The Nicassar Auxiliaries are sent out into empty space on a miniature transport constructed to replicate their native Dhows, tasked with supplementing MANTRA - 43's drones in this endeavour.

System Survey:
Probes are sent out to subsector 0704.

Order 1 & 2: Valkyrie Surveillance Net
The Valkyrie Taskforce Commander ordered the creation of a more advanced surveillance system for scanning and surveillance. It will be divided into two levels: Macro and Micro. If possible, use this new system to assist in the sub-sector probe scans.

Valkyrie Surveillance Net - Macro
The Macro Level of the Valkyrie Surveillance Net aims to give a more general level of information such as that of locations or points of interest.

Upgrades to the probes and/or the development of macro-surveillance devices are developed.

Valkyrie Surveillance Net - Micro
The Micro Level of the Valkyrie Surveillance Net aims to give a more specific level of information such as that of certain interest groups or people.

Spy-flies, drones, and other devices for micro-surveillance are developed.

---

"The success of most operations lies on the information that we possess and of course, what we do with such information. As such, it is imperative that we upgrade our surveillance system to the next level to give commanders more and better options. " -The Valkyrie Taskforce Commander

Bonus Order 1: Efficiency Upgrades
Technical and Construction drones were produced, upgrades on current equipment were done, and development of future equipment was started to improve the efficiency of any future constructions, upgrades, and repairs.

"The main capabilities of this task force lie not in diplomacy or combat but technology. It is only natural that we work on upgrading our signature ways in order to effectively carry out our tasks." -The Valkyrie Taskforce Chief Engineer

Neemva stared out of the observation bay into the darkness of the abyss. Endless void stretched before her with millions of tiny specs of light, the stars of the universe before her, but she did not feel awe, or excitement... She felt only shame. The black abyss was so much like the ground she had prayed would swallow her up in her moment of failure, when she held the thin body in her arms and screamed. Each star a taunting reminder of her banishment, isolated and alone, far from home or her purpose in the Greater Good. Lost, adrift in a sector she did not know and did not need her. She was a member of the fire caste, she was a warrior, she was not an explorer. She knew nothing about conversing with new species, learning their culture and convincing them of the path for the Greater Good.. She knew naught how to repair or manage a starship, or how to build up infrastructure to save a species on the brink of extinction. Neemva had only known one skill, to take life for the Greater Good. This banishment was a fitting punishment then, to be caught in an endless spiral of failure. In an effort to pull herself from her daze, Neemva brought her glass to her lips and took a small sip, the strong liquid burned its way down her throat and warmed her body even as her soul remained chilled. Raenka, a Gue drink and one she had developed an attachment to in her early years during deployment. Rather expensive and hard to come by now, but she had enough of a reserve to last for a bit longer. At first it had been merely a drink she favored, but now? Lost in this new world, out of her depth, the drink proved to be a lifeline, a sense of normality to keep her grounded, one of the few remaining links she had to past glories that were now gone.

"You've finally woken," a voice said from behind, while the words were clear, they didn't sound quite right, occasional clicks and harsh clipped tones that could not have been produced by the throat of a Tau. Neemva half turned to face the new arrival, the large humanoid, it stood much taller then she, its skin was dark and leathery, large spines spilled out of the back of their head almost a mockery of hair, but upon closer examination, one could see how they would move and twitch as if 'tasting' the air.

"I have," Neemva stated and motioned with her head for the large Kroot Shaper to join her, "How are your warriors, Dahpak?"

"Strong, ready," Dahpak said as he walked across the metallic floor, his steps light and soundless despite his bulk, "For a while, I thought I was going to need to use one of your fusion blasters to get you out of that pod," the kroot's voice was clipped, and a small series of clicks followed, laughter.

"The support crew would have disapproved. Commander ash stains are a pain to remove," Neemva said, a small smile on the corner of her lips as she felt herself being pulled back into something akin to 'normalcy'. She did not need to put herself into cyrosleep for the journey to this place, but she had done so anyways. Tau did not live as long as others and to preserve their commanders, they froze themselves until they were needed... Neemva was no longer 'needed' but old habits died hard.

"Bold to come to this quadrant. Ork probes about, good hunting," Dahpak said as he gazed out of the observation bay windows as if he could already spot their 'kill kroozers' moving about.

"Not in this subsector, but all around it," Neemva corrected as she took another sip. Dahpak had called it a 'good hunt', he was brave and would fight the Orks if needed, but she understood it was also a warning.

"The B'Gel are looking for something. Either someone to fight or something more. If this subsector holds secrets, holds answers, its best we gain them before the B'Gel find it and if there are allies here, it is best to prepare them should the tide come," Neemva stated, although she did not have to share her reasons with anyone on her crew, Dahpak was her friend, a comrade, one she had fought with on many occasions, one she respected. The shaper sometimes held insight that she did not and there was never harm in listening. Pride did not serve the Greater Good.

The shaper shrugged its large shoulders, an expression it had learned from serving as a mercenary along the Gue, "Perhaps, still good hunting."

A small smile once again tugged at her lips, in truth, that was another part of it. Orks she understood, well, as much as anyone could. A fight on the ground? It offered familiarity in this new world she found herself in and she couldn't deny that part of her was drawn to it like a Gue to a grox burger.

"Thank you, Dahpak," Neemva said as she turned her gaze back to the window.

"For?" The shaper said, a few spines on his head twitching almost in curisoity.

"For accompanying me."

"The pay was good."

Probe is sent out to the local subsector 0700.

Actions
1. Manta will patrol the far rim of the subsector using their own scanners to ensure no Squeaker-Squigs have entered the subsector.

2. Battle drills will be held in larger hanger bays to shake off the 'rust' of the long flight and help the auxiliary get used to fighting alongside Tau and each other.

Bonus Action
[Not sure if this would count as an 'extra military deployment' but no harm in trying] Neemva will order a second hanger deployment for further exercises to reinforce the training.

Por'El Tradeflow

Shas'El Mistrunner stood on the bridge of his Manta, looking over the jump data, annoyed somewhat they'd entered into the region blindly. Still initial scans hadn't found anything before the jump. They would just have to scan more properly once the chance was given. What mattered at the moment was that the Tau'va was expanding into this territory and he was tasked with escorting a Water Caste contingent on this mission to attempt to build diplomatic and commercial means to bring new worlds into the empire.

"It seems we'll have to rely on our friend for this work," Por'El Tradeflow said from his position behind Mistrunner. The Por'El was a tall, athletic figure in fine robes and trappings of one suiting his rank. He had the build most Water Caste favored, not as strong as a Fire but not as slender as Air. He'd heard the Gue'Vesa call it a 'swimmers build' by their own dialect. It was an amusing description considering the caste.

"As you say, Por'El, but I still want a thorough scan of this empty space if possible. The other Shas'El are likely to drive into regions once they're ready. I can't argue with your intent to build the foundations of our trade and diplomatic logistics though," Shas'El Mistrunner admitted as he shifts some. His green and grey armor display the colors of Dal'yth as much as the outfit of the Por'El with its elegant designs.

"The Demiurg are quite eager to have an excuse to do void construction. And I'd sooner trust their work an outpost right at the edge of this sector. They've a an excellent fell for such work. That let's us hold our other forces in reserve until we start making contact. I imagine the other Shas'El will appreciate having a relay and logistics point to support their own efforts," Por'El Tradeflow noted with a nod as he turns to gesture the Demiurg Elder over in charge of the Demiurg Auxiliary.

MAJOR DISCOVERY.

The Nicassar Ship drifted systematically with the probes... nothing... debris. more nothing.

The probes prepared to return to the Manta when the Nicassar detected subspace warping that would indicate hidden mass in the subsector.
The probes were reordered to investigate and the auxillaries homed in on these hidden gravity wells... revealing two points of interest in the subsector:

1) Extremely Unstable star system in 0609 named "Candle" -- Candle is in the process of destabilizing and the entire solar system is raked and glassed by tremendous solar flares dating back millenia but continuing to this day. There may be resources in the Candle System, especially on Candle II and VIII, but any prolonged endeavor in the system is highly dangerous if not suicidal. The Unstable sun is powering an ancient device of unknown origin which is screened from flares by being on the dark side of a non revolving celestial body. This device, The Nicassar determine, uses solar power to hide a neighboring system in the subsector -- a cold and ancient white star of almost inconsequential size, with one burning desert planet orbiting it at exceedingly close range, but with no signs of orbital decay.

The Nicassar searched this world and found one site of consequence. Inside a super-cooled pylon or pyramidial structure not accessable to probes or scouts, assessed at TL5 (equivalent or superior to Tau) -- is some kind of tomb for a metallic skeletal humanoid, decorated as if some sort of noble with ancient looking but advanced artifacts as grave goods. The structure is cooled by three cylindrical structures distributed around the planet, tended to by unguessably old scarab-like machines that are exceedingly worn and damaged but show no signs of breaking down.

Auxillaries fled the subsector immediately after cursory assessment. One drone was observed by a scarab and promptly neutralized and dismantled.

Perhaps some things are best left alone, Shas'El.

This system millenia ago may have been full of planets, all now inexplicably shattered into orbiting bands of Debris, some with ancient ruins present. A Tarellian Pirate Operation brings in unsuspecting workers of their species under false pretenses, stranding them to mine for dangerous alien relics and materials under threat of suspending life support.

The operation numbers in the thousands of pirates, and hundreds of thousands of miners, and this exploitation seems to have been going on for generations, even though new influxes of deceived Tarellians arrive almost yearly.

We may want to intervene, Commander.

Cosmo Cosmo :
The Flight and Secured cargo Bays of the Manta were broken up into territories, and the auxillaries were charged with annexing as much of the bowels of the ship. What started as drills evolved into a wargame... A wargame the Kroot enjoyed, though it made them very hungry.
After a particularly successful romp left Kroot blood smeared everywhere, a Shaper lost stewardship of the winning Kroot warriors who raided their own ship for food -- proclaiming spoils were earned.

Then the Enoullians stepped in, hidden among the kroot and placing themselves in front of the lootable cargo and behind the Shaper to re-assert his dominance. First the shaper beat the most rambunctious kroot rabble-rousers, then the Enoulians executed the Tau discipline -- the reward for their exercises was to clean the blood from the decks and holds.

"Kroot and Tau Stand as one, the kroot will fight for the Tau" the shaper stated. Gangling a purse of shimmering crystals received as a down payment for their services.

If the exercises were meant to whet the appetite of the Kroot, they did just that. "Games" were scaled back to primarily test and challenge Fire Warriors skills and refine cooperative tactics with the auxillaries...

But the Kroot were hungry... and SPOILING for a real fight.

"Do you think there will be strong foes in 0700?" A Kroot warrior grunted.

"If they are there and are strong, it will be good to have that strength." The shaper chittered.

"Stop licking the blood of your siblings and think of conquest. When the bays are clean, the games will resume. Winning side will eat the losers rations."

Kroot Auxillaries gain descriptor "Excited", "Spoil-Hungry"

Population

Planet Saezz was centuries if not millennia ago the nexus of what seems to be best linguistically described as a "Perimeter Organization" -- Human or human analog in ancestry. Signs of broad use of cybernetics and even broader prosecutions within the leadership and against the populace suggest this was once a Prison or Warehouse for declared Maltech of the Imperium of Man, too dangerous for use or experimentation. Unbraked AIs, gengineered slave species, nanotech replicators, weapons of planetary destruction... the Perimeter hunted down experimenters with a great indifference to planetary laws until a warp storm isolated the organization to this subsector where the organization eventually or inevitably turned on itself. The Hives once homing billions now shelter creshes amounting in total to Several million inhabitants -- Slowly being hunted to extinction by the most lesser and subtle of the Maltech they once protected, the prisoners now wardens of the jail. The greatest existential threats were destroyed while still in captivity with evidence of an intermediate period where moderately appalling threats preyed on one another as well as the majority of Saezz's population. Only the weakest shards and vestiges remain, but they are still abominations, maintaining an ever-present atmosphere of death and terror.

Intel gathered:

Enemies: Potential
  • Renegade legacy agency director
  • Maltech researchers amid survivors, and at least one offworld entity.
  • Paranoid Survivor Holdfast built on a warehoused "Exterminatus"
Friends: Potential
  • Haven Agent in need of help, offworld rescue
  • Support staff council loosely unifying havens.
  • "Unjustly" targeted researchers -- Degenerated Inquisition entity that catalogues what is still contained in the "perimeters"
Complications:
  • The Maltech Researchers (local agency) has gone rogue and now uses maltech
  • The Agency archives have been compromised, people are arming/turning Maltech on each others Havens
  • The Agency has been targeted by a maltech-using organization (offworld collectors, Eldar)
  • The Agency's existence is unknown to most of the locals. Outsiders are viewed with suspicion.

Situation is confusing, complex, and in state of decay. Proceed with Caution.

Rising Hegemon

This world is not yet under a dominant power on the planet, but it's well on its way there with a handful of would-be Imperators-Apparent. Whether through newly-blossoming economic, military, or cultural power, they're extending their influence over their neighbors and forging new arrangements between their government and the rulers of nearby continents. This world will soon be united under one of these rulers... and we may be in a position to choose.

Enemies: Potential
  • Jingoistic supremacist (upsetter of new world order)
  • Official bent on glorious success (Xenophobic, culturally predatory, most likely ruler-to-be)
  • Foreign agent saboteurs (Dark Eldar, engineering precariousness of new world order)
Friends: Potential
  • Friendly emissary to the benighted (brilliant inventor in service of idiotic heir apparent has somehow contacted us?)
  • Hardscrabble local turned great success (very popular would be ruler)
  • Foreign visitor seeking contacts or knowledge (Offworld Stryxis Network)
Complications:
  • Those we would support are only strong because their neighbors have been weakened
  • Their success is based on a fluke resource -- something called "Endurium" -- a rock-like high-yield energy substance they use in the manufacture of high quality but primitive weapons and armor.
  • Those we would support bitterly resent their neighbors as former oppressors
Things:
  • Tribute shipment -- The leader taking control of this wealth will likely inherit the world.
  • Strange Stepped Pyramids from which all Endurium is found.
  • Tech or data that will deal a blow to the rise of one or more heir-apparents.

ASSET/COMMODITY

Cultural Power

The world is a considerable cultural power -- producing music, art, philosophy, or some similar intangible that the Tau find irresistably attractive. Honorable Commander might have a profound degree of cultural cachet as the inheritor of some venerable artistic traditions to share with the rest of the Tau.

Subsector 0706...

vastness of empty space on the periphery of various more compelling subsectors... but something insideous drifted here...

The Demiurg Built a modest sized communications and refueling relay for the trade fleet to make initial entry into this sector. The task was done gracefully and almost without incident, a storm of microparticles bombarded the construction site and the Demiurg Space Construction Rigs early in the project, but subsector scans surmised this was merely shrapnel from an explosion that took place far away and likely millenia ago. That was the thing about the physics of space travel... objects in motion tended to stay in motion. If you fired a projectile and you missed your target -- the story didn't end there. Somewhere, sometime, that ballistic mass was going to ruin someone's day. There were injuries sustained, but no casualties since the Demiurg quickly took cover among the Fabrication Cubes that contained the materials for their project. Still and all, by the time the Auxillary force was done -- and they could be proud of their work -- All were tired and nursing the chafe of overwork if not injury from debris. (Demiurg unit Disrupted)

Still, the Outpost flickered to life and immediately came online as a new extension of the Tau'va Trade Fleet Communication and pathnet.

The background radiation of the sector chimed to life with a slowly spreading wave of Tau propaganda, hidden in the natural waveforms where more peaceable lifeforms might look for it. On it's highest level it broadcast this sector as a new potential hub for trade to the rest of the Tau Worlds. No sooner had it gone online that it's first Inquisitive Trade ship, a massive late-design Il-Fannor, arrived at the edge of the subsector and docked with the Relay Outpost.
"This is Merchant Admiral Eldi El'purri" -- Captain of the "Gifted Emissary" ... We are presently on Rest and Recreation after a long Triangular Trade route through the Septs.

The crew of my ship and it's auxillaries do not wish to remain cooped up on the El'purri, so I am giving you an assignment, commander:

"Find a world on which my crew can rest and rehabillitate quickly -- but in safety -- and I shall put this backwater sector Savris Delta literally and figuratively on the map. Additionally, designate three populated worlds in the sector as trade nodes and I shall tell the Ethereals of your devotion to the greater good."

The pale, tall and gaunt air-caste Tau was offering a golden opportunity... but Mistrunner would need to rise to meet this challenge. No worlds to his knowledge had yet been pacified, much less three planets populated or resourced enough to deem making a trade node. Still, the mission was was his.

(Mission: Locate Planet or unideally a orbital station for the trade crew R&R. Designate 3 worlds as trade points in Savris Delta.)

Then the station caught wind of an unidentified tech conglomeration moving through the subsector...

Spacehulk Designation : "The Cruel Shoal" -- replete with salvagable imperial technology, there is also an ultra-secure vault deep within marked in early gothic "PRIMARIS" -- Evidence of a Psyker signal emanating from the hulk, although Tau are not sensitive to these emanations. Lifesigns are aboard the hulk, indeed rife in certain places, but some kind of unknown masking blinds our sensors as to what. Whatever the occupants are, they are fast, and move from one of the hardest areas of the ship to scan to another. One sleeping organism rests in stasis before the vault and while it seems to be curled up and asleep, would appear to fit an ultra-rare designation "Zoanthrope." Presumption: Genestealers with possible Tyrranid Hive-node organism. Protocol dictates we call in a minelayer to sweep space ahead of the hulk and destroy it without second glance. Your courage may dictate other maneuvers.

Savris Delta
Subsector 0706
-Turn I-

Orders

A Strategy Meeting

Commander Marx, Shas'el of the MANTA-042, stood firm at the main viewing port of his bridge. Beyond him were stars upon endless stars blinking with haphazard variety. The lens of the mechanical eye surgically implanted into his left eye-socket rotated several times. So many stars and systems to be united for the Greater Good. So many people unelevated to the wonders of Tau technology and dogma. However vast the void of space ever seemed, Marx consoled himself with these thoughts. Each victory brought the utopia of the Ethereals, and to waver in faith wrought only defeat. It was with these tenets that he lived by and by these alone had he survived this long.

The last sector had proven to be gruelling indeed. It was times the most he could do to keep his ship space-worthy in the midst of world-eating artificial intelligences and hordes of Ork savagery. But as every blade must be tempered, he too had been beaten into severe shape. No more was he a fresh commander searching to explore the frontiers of Tau space. Now Commander Marx of the MANTA-042 was a battle-hardened veteran forged in the flames of orbital and planetary combat.

And now was the time he would serve the Greater Good once again.

Behind him stood a stocky Tau in decorated uniform. The Fio'vre of the Earth Caste Taskforce present on the ship remained steadfast, waiting for his commander to initiate dialogue.

"Overseer." Marx gestured without turning for him to begin the report.

"Sir. All systems are nominal and all taskforces are prepared for service."

"Good." Still Marx did not turn away from the stars, but seemed to gaze further, deeper in. His crimson cybernetic eye rotated rhythmically.

Four more stepped forth, uniforms slightly less decorated but with composure resolutely intact. The first, a recently-shaven Gue'Vesa'ui, cleared his throat before speaking.

"Sergeant Killian Murphy, reporting in. The 'Gue'Vesa', as you say, are ready for anything." He seemed to stand slightly more to attention than before, features drawn tight with stoic zeal.

The second made a sound somewhere between a buzz and a hiss, wings peeking from behind its chitinous back. The translation device at its throat produced a distorted but vaguely human voice.

"Strain Leader Krr'aaz, reporting in... My Stingwings are... eager to serve." The insectoid indeed looked nightmarish enough, but the translator certainly did nothing to stop that.

Third was the Thraxian, perhaps the most terrifying creature among those that stood on the command deck. It chittered a little before assuming an eerily Tau-esque voice.

"Safe One T'aal Baddur reporting in. We wish you to lead us further into glorious combat, Commander." Between the multitude of lethal claws or it's large-yet-agile frame, there was no doubt it's kind revelled in the throes of heroic and gruesome violence.

And last was the Simulacra, the latest addition to the MANTA-042's officer crew. Known for the shifting of their shape, the leader of the Simulacra Auxiliaries bowed with the form of a feminine Tau. Since discovering and allowing them aboard, they had taken an interest in mimicking the Tau physiology - particularly in ways accentuating beauty and attractiveness.

"Sergeant Liola Teveres, at your service. As always, my teams are ready and willing." It winked with a smile at the Gue'Vesa across the line, who simply shook his head and grunted.

Marx raised a hand and all present waited.

"Thank you for coming. We have a new sector ahead of us, Savris Delta. It will be filled with things we may not yet expect, so the objective is the same. Unify systems in the name of Tau'va and integrate sentient species into the Greater Good." He paused and finally turned around in his chair, sizing up his officers.

"Remember, the Ethereals are always watching. The service we provide directly contributes to the Greater Good. We have the highest honour of facing the frontiers of the unknown - in the name of our Empire and its people, and we will not disappoint those expectations."

The commander waited, gazing between the silent faces that stared back with diligent earnest. They were good officers, picked by Marx himself. They would not disappoint him or their objectives to the best of their abilities. That and unbreakable will were all he required from those that served him.

"It has recently come to my attention that another Shas'el has constructed a depot relay nearby for the Tau Merchant Fleet. We are sending the MANTA-042 to Subsector 0706 to check for deep-space damages." As he spoke, bridge operators began typing orders on their consoles to relay the information across the ship. If Marx were not such a serious Tau, he may have smiled at the efficiency of his crew.

"In the meantime, begin probing of Subsector 0708. We will be approaching the Sector from these coordinates and running a sweep curving upwards once we reach the edge of the starmap. If you have any questions, ask them now."

No response, his officers simply waited for him to continue.

"Good. We will be exiting jump-space soon, prepare for sub-light entry. Dismissed."

They nodded and filed out uniformly. The Overseer remained.

"Fio'vre Vah'Kol, it is time again."

"Yes, Commander. I look forward to the wonderful Maltech you'll bring to my workshop."

A hint of humour. Marx grunted and swivelled to return his gaze to the stars.

"Yes... And speaking of your workshop..." He tapped at his personal console and several schematics beamed up on the holodecks, "I would like you to begin planning the construction for this. With the help of the supply depot in 0706, we should be able to install this in expedited time."

The Overseer studied the pictures intently, holding his chin as he focused on the designs, "Yes, yes... I think this could work. It would be crude at first, but I am confident we can improve it's design given time."

Marx nodded routinely, "Very good. See to it and that will be all."

Vah'Kol bowed and left to fulfil his duties. Marx then gestured to the officer assigned to assist him.

"Establish contact with the Commander in 0706."

Act I: Foundation

A pensive Kessan can be seen hunched over a PADD display in his dim chambers, with a bottle of what seems like some sort of whey-based alcoholic beverage by his side. The digital report before him detailed the events of the day and the results of the preliminary system survey of sector 0609, conducted at approximately 0800 hours T'au time. It made little sense, of course, a tomb hidden away on a strange and dusty planet in constant orbit around an inconsequential white star? Even more astonishing was that the entire subsector had somehow been hidden away by a device he feared was much too advanced for their current capabilities to even begin to understand. The XO of MANTRA-43 had compiled a series of possible courses of action, keeping in mind the risks involved in tampering with things that were perhaps better left to the bitter void of space. The standard recommendation had been to send a message back to central command and alert any Tau ships in the area before investigating. The commander fidgeted with his device while pacing around the plush quarters, reading and re-reading the logs. Then it struck him; the logs' final entry indicated that the scarabs had dismantled the lost drone. It was a hunch. One that could be proved wrong quite easily, but the commander decided to give it a shot anyway. A plan of action was settled on and sent to the concerned personnel, following which the captain eased into a cushy armchair to update his personal logs for the day. Explorers were meant to explore, and the ethereals need not be bothered with a situation that hadn't become volatile as yet.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
Command(s) Summary & Additional Goals.
  • The remaining probes aboard MANTRA-43 are encased with Faraday shielding to protect them from the constant bombardment of electromagnetic radiation. These probes are then sent out to conduct a secondary systems survey of the sub-sector & the Candle system. With particular points of interest being; the cloaking device used to hide the tomb planet and the neighbouring star system, Candle II & Candle VIII.
  • In an effort to implement the Tau combat doctrine of Kauyon (Patient Hunter), where the enemy is drawn by use of a "lure" into a carefully prepared killing zone, a remotely controlled robotic device is released onto the planetary surface on the hunch that the scarabs were unsophisticated machines that are attracted by all organic or inorganic matter. Once the lure is set and the scarabs are drawn, a unit of Vespid Auxiliaries is sent out to neutralize the machines with precision from the air.
  • Suppose the previous action is successful and the immediate threats around the tomb and the cooling rods dealt with. In that case, the Water Caste Taskforce is sent forward to conduct a xenosociological survey of the tomb and report back with any relevant information. [IF YES - BONUS ACTION]

The Manta of Shas'el Marx moved into proximity with the newly constructed Trade waystation and he had arranged to do business with one of his fellow commanders there.

The Il-Fannor had some remnant focusing crystals from the completion of their trade run and they were shared with Marx's Earth Caste once it was established what they were doing. The Mark I mining laser was quickly built, and with the focus along with Tau ingenuity it was almost instantly innovated to mark II, nearly 5 times as powerful as the original mining laser and exceeding expectations on output. With sufficient fuel (a stable solar entity or Gas Giant for Hydrogen Skimming) could keep it running at peak efficiency and fire even into adjacent subsectors.

The Mining Laser would need a name, The proud earth caste informed Marx. Presently it awkwardly towed behind MANTA-042, It's own stabilizing thrusters keeping it in plane with the manta as the Earth Caste continues to pour over it, looking for tiny inefficiencies or opportunities for improvement.

Marx gains "Orbital Mining Laser, MkII" (range 1) with descriptors "Innovative", "Promising"

The Probes conveyed their information for general review 0708 shortly after the Shas'El dropped settled into the new sector...

Planetary System Designation: "Papadoudou"

Atmosphere

Breatheable mix
Temperature
Variable cold
Biosphere
Microbial life (Voracious/Endothermic -- improperly adapted or suited creatures will be drained of heat)
Population
Hundreds of millions of inhabitants ("Ark Cities" hastily created since the collapse of the nearby star preserve some population)

Night World

The world is plunged into eternal darkness since the dimming collapse of the nearby star. The only life on this planet derives its energy from other sources, such as geothermal heat, extremely volatile chemical reactions in the planet's soil, or light in a non-visible spectrum. Mutant Biofauna is voraciously eager to consume all other life.

Enemies:
  • Monstrous thing from the night
  • Offworlder finding the obscurity of the world convenient for dark purposes
  • Mad scientist experimenting with local life
Friends:
  • Curious offworlder researchers ("Rogue Traders")
  • Hard-pressed colony leader (Distress signals received, probes have remained silent)
Complications:
  • Daylight comes as a cataclysmic event at very long intervals
  • Light causes very dangerous reactions to native life or chemicals here (Microfauna Plagues)
Things:
  • Rare chemicals created in the darkness -- Possible value to Tau
  • Smuggler cache hidden here in ages past -- (Small TL5 storehouse hidden far beneath surface when planet was controlled by imperium of man)
Places:
  • Formlessly pitch-black wilderness (Everything outside of Arkcities)
  • Sea without a sun (Majority of world is unstable pack ice, most landmasses consumed by icecap-related flooding)
  • Locations defined by sounds or smells (it is ABSOLUTELY dark here. Outside of Arkcities, only genegineered life can conventionally "see"

It is worth noting that there is a handful of orbital/free-floating structures in this system from before the dimming when advancement and development was rampant:

Relic Research Station "Salaga 2"

Occupation

Alien studying the human locals
Situation
Perilous research underway (precarious plan to elevated ark cities)

Seminole 2 Relic Space-Habitat

Occupation

Extortionate corporate minions
Situation
Deep-space alien signal (Not Tau in Origin)

Tame 8 Orbital Habitat

Occupation

Dangerously odd humans (desperate about orbital decay, cannibalism?)
Situation
Systems breaking down

Jotula 3 Paradise Moon Retreat (Gets what little light the sun emits mirrored here)

Occupation
Eccentric oligarch and minions (Ruler Caste of Papadoudou before the "dimming" -- living in luxury offworld)
Situation
Foreign sabotage attempt (Vengeful Papadoudoun assassins)

Neemva brushed her long dark hair aside to rub her temples as her mind tried to come to terms with all the information being displayed before her. She had commanded units, been to war, she was educated and trained to understand such matters, but this? This was not where she was supposed to be, trying to manage diplomatic affairs like this was not something she was adept in. The situation on Tara, alone, had her head spinning just trying to formulate a plan of attack. To attempt to take the world by force was foolhardy, even if she had much larger resources at her disposal. There was simply too many unknowns, what maltech was hunting the locals? What other maltech existed? How many of their systems were corrupted by maltech and how was she supposed to even notice? How was she to deal with 'The Agency' when many of the natives did not even know they existed? How was she to deal with paranoid survivalist that were unlikely to take kindly to Tau 'invaders' that were possibly sitting on an unknown ordinance of Imperium Exterminatus weaponry? Even a lightning attack on the survivalist was not ideal, they were sitting on a Hive City, as defunct and worn as it was, meant getting in a force to truly surprise them in such a fast attack was unlikely. Cramped fighting in a maze like structure was going to be brutal and slow once they got closer to their actual haven and who was to say they wouldn't detonate. Could they even detonate? Were the weaponry even in condition to be fired? What would happen if they were exploded on the surface rather then fired at the surface? What kind of exterminatus ordinance was it? Was there even exterminatus ordinance there? What if it was actually some grand bluff? So many questions and not nearly enough answers for her satisfaction. A single misstep could lead not just to the loss of the world, but it's total annihilation. The presence of Eldar did not improve her mood. Eldar were mysterious and their motivations seemed alien and sometimes counter-productive to the obvious Greater Good, they could be of help, they could be a great hinderance, perhaps both... The only saving grace, thank the Ethereals, was a group of Havens trying to unite with some seemingly friendly but under duress. She needed more information before she committed to helping them, she needed to know the threat, the situation, she needed to see how 'First Contact' went. Tara was a mess and one she could not afford to mishandle, but nor could she begin to unravel it. Not until she learned more. The possibly friendly haven had endured till now, by the grace Tau'Va, they could hold awhile longer.

The rest of the system was less dire but Neemva was still not comfortable with it. Two space stations, one seemingly empty but had been the black market of the owners of Tara and was filled with various freeze dried corpses that they had not yet identified. Either the space station was mostly empty, looted by the pirates, or it hadn't been looted which meant whatever defenses it had were still active. With the maltech on Tara, it was very possible it held dangers they could not foresee, but she would order a strike against it anyways. The Kroot were excited, they needed something. Either a battle or spoils to calm their nerves, she would never try to tame that savage spirit of theirs, after all, it was that spirit to which she was drawn and hired them for. Fighting through the defenses, if any, would give the Kroot an outlet, if it was defenseless, looted already, the freeze dried corpses would still be valuable loot to the Kroot and research for the Tau. Either way, taking it would be a boon. The other station was controlled by 'dangerously odd' humans along with pirates that were using it as a supply hub. She had recieved the reports from other Tau in the system that had found a mining operation, if so, the pirates of this sector were rampant and widespread with considerable pull. Was the mining station their stronghold? Possible, but she doubted it. It didn't seem to have much in the way of patrolling ships or places for ships to readily berth for repairs, no, it was likely the pirate fortress was deeper in the sector and a major threat that would have to be eliminated. After they gathered more information, and the soldiers had time to cut their teeth on the Faqu Void Mission, she'd consider the taking of the supply hub. If they could take it, in tact, it would be useful for supplying the Tau that were coming into the sector.

Limeda... Limeda seemed fairly straight forward, multiple nations were struggling for dominance and it seemed two of them could be swayed to support the Greater Good and usher in the planet to a golden era. Which to support was the question and how to support them. The unification of the planet with as little strife or conflict as possible would be ideal as hidden anger and resentment could lead to a terrible civil war later. Despite its level of technology, Limeda possessed some oddities. A unique power source that Neemva had no doubt the earth caste would love to get their hands on to test its limits and possibilities, an inventor that somehow hailed them despite their level of technology, that this inventor managed to transmit to them was impressive, but the fact the inventor managed to also discover them? Doubly so. A shame the nation he served seemed dubious in its ability, but meeting with him could still provide valuable intel on the planet and ways to move forward... But the art these Limedians created was truly something else. Neemva was not a water caste, she was never one for 'art'. Never saw much of a point, but there was something about the way they spoke, about the things they created, that called to her. Her hands drifted across the console as a holographic replication of a Limedian statue manifested before her. She did not know its name, or even, what it was. Yet it was beautiful, the lines, the way it bent and curved, the small errors that seemed chipped into it that added something, perhaps life in all its flawed beauty. Her preliminary reports on their artistic creations had already created a buzz higher up the chain, they wanted it and Neemva would do her best to deliver.

There was one other matter, one shadow lurking beyond her vision, the B'Gel. Despite what initial reports claimed, they had probes in this system. Neemva had hoped to ensure they found them all and removed them, but with the sheer amount of data and information the probe had brought in about the system, it had been easy to overlook the probes, have them disappear between the streams of incoming data. They had managed to destroy a few before they could report, but there were likely more probes out there and this system was not safe. They were on a timetable. Sooner or later, the B'Gel would come to investigate and if the wars on the planets escalated, it would reduce their timetable. They needed this system to fall in line as soon as possible even if Neemva wasn't sure how to do that, the floating image of Tara almost taunting her from the corner of her eye. They had to gain control and set up defenses around these planets, to prepare should the B'Gel make their move. These planets, especially Limeda, were too valuable to be lost to savagery. With that somber thought, Neemva reached up to tie her hair back up into the long ponytail favored by her caste, she had work to do and she could only hope she would not fail the Greater Good a second time.

Elucid Elucid :

Kessan watched the silent feed from the practically airless world of the scarabs. The machine was set up, noisy and obvious, to attract the few scarabs on the surface to approach it. The trap would work... in the following moments the Vespid auxillaries descended with vicious systematic aggression and bravery... surrounding the scarabs and wiping them out, all but one -- strangely shielded in an odd green glow -- some kind of web-like energy shell. This scarab was erratic and noisy. The irony of the situation had not dawned on the vespids, they were falling into a mirror of their very own trap...

The Canoptek Spyder watched the silent feed from the belly of it's lair, Awakening it's brood of sleeping scarabs that boiled out of the ashen sands of the burning desert in two great arcs around the Vespid attack.

The scarab swarm, were noiseless compared to the searing and growling of the volcanic desert. In one motion, the hundreds of scarabs converged on the Vespid auxillary and blew through them... past them... like a whirlwind...

Chips of chitin fell to the ground along with any inorganics, mostly badges and weapons, leaving no trade the majority of the auxillary ever existed in one swift motion.

Flying cautiously above, the Vespid Strain-leader signaled to the remaining three elite bodyguards to activate the "second layer" of the Kouyon doctrine. The real enemy had revealed itself. They activated their payloads of crystal explosives and dived for the scarabs...

...who just as swiftly buried themselves in the ashy ground once more.

The Elite Vespid Suicide bombers popped almost comically in the quiet airless wastes. One sprinted for one of the cooling towers to at least take that with him...

It was a brave gesture. But it only managed to splatter some of it's ichor against the cold surface of the black cylinder, it's blood freezing onto the metal surface of the structure...

As he felt the vibrations of something large and terrible hovering up behind him, The strain-leader clicked into it's comm, it's translation collar sending a message to the Shas'el:

"Strain Leader Krr'aaz, reporting in... My Stingwings are... Gone."

And then the Canoptek Spyder rent Krr'aaz asunder like a thing of paper mache'... dropping back into it's lair, stopping only for a moment to scrape the ichor off the cooling structure's surface.

In a vital gesture it dropped it's head-mounted camera onto the surface, so that the feed might spy what happened next...

A single shining and untarnished scarab crawled back from the ground and repaired the ancient broken scarabs responsible for tending the cooling towers. Every single one... with them going back to work as if nothing had happened, if a bit more scuffed and battered for having fallen so briefly in the Vespid assault.

The camera-comm witnessed the obsidian bulk of the Canoptek Spyder burying the location of it's lair... but before it did, it scanned the sky, the stars -- and stopped where
Kessans ship would be, approximately, far outside the range tiny oort cloud of the systems tiny sun... and then it turned it's myriad eyes, iris-cycling lenses focusing like eight mighty interstellar telescopes... training it's eyes to the direction his ship had come.

Then it grabbed the comm-link, looked down into it, blinking as if wondering what observed on the other side. (Kessan)

A spark of green lightning destroyed the feed.

Vespid Auxillary is totally lost. Analysis suggests adversaries logged likely location, or direction towards, the Tau homeworlds before resuming status quo.

Commander, Please Advise.

Taskforce Mistrunner: Turn 2
Por'El Tradeflow.jpg

Shas'El Mistrunner regards the data flowing in from other taskforces taps in commands here and there to examine the data. So far the exploration of the region was already bearing fangs. He was an advocate of Kauyon, favoring gaining knowledge and intelligence before carrying out any major strikes or operations. It had denied him glory at times but also had given his very effective outcomes once he set things in motion. It was why he had been entrusted with escorted Por'El Tradeflow. The pair had similar outlooks if in different fields of application. The Water Caste kept the empire flowing and together so the Etherals did not have to waste their energies doing so, allowing them to focus on the bigger picture of spreading the Greater Good. He took pride in his ability to provide what force was needed to make sure trade and diplomacy could be achieved, including the times it helped nudge it along with necessary demonstrations of power.

"You don't like what the reports are saying so far," Por'El Tradeflow said as he approached with a tray to pour himself and Mistrunner some tea. Mistrunner accepted his without protest, used to Tradeflows mannerism by this point after their ongoing linked careers in service to the Tau'va.

"That hulk likely filled with treasure but also Tyranid spawn. These mystery machines further away. Aliens poking about in 0708 where we potentically have a moon the Il-Fannor could have his desires for respite location... if we can get the locals to cooperate. I don't like it, not with the Demiurg down. We need to give them time to recover. I'm ordering Captain Vaulrie to commence drilling and preparing for potential engagement. The Gue'Vesa are reliable warriors and I feel this will also show our trust in them since its clear we must rely upon them as our major military force beyond support from the Manta. They will also be useful as we're already starting to encounter Gue'la," Mistrunner said as he sips his tea and looks on with a annoyed expression.

"Hmmm, I can't argue with that. We have potential targets for my Water Caste agents. But its best we prime ourselves for the first big push to get the Merchant Fleet more active here. Perhaps I'll start tailoring the transmissions for some of our revealed population clusters? It might at least help the local taskforces if we can't get to them yet," Tradeflow offers as he sips his own tea.

"I can't argue with that. The more subtle influence was can exert here, the better. Even if we do not personally take as many worlds, our efforts will be known. What matters is success above all, doubly so as clear threats are already emerging. Kauyon dictates we gather more information to succeed at taking our prey."

Tradeflow just chuckles but nods, used to his militant counterpart as well. The pair start to talk out the finer points, including using the Gue'Vesa to start releasing some propaganda into the region to hopefully encourage local Gue'la cluster to be more cooperative or at least open to their approach.

Savris Delta
Subsector 0706
-Turn II-

Orders

  • A Strategy Meeting

A datalink opened up on Commander Mistrunner's console, the indication of an incoming communique blinking. Commander Marx's grizzled holographic features appeared before him.

"Greetings, Commander Mistrunner. This is Shas'el Marx hailing from MANTA-042. We will be docking with your station for a routine maintenance check before continuing into the sector." His tone was flat and even, a slight rumble indicating his age.

"Greetings to you, Shas'el Marx. I am happy to see our new installation is already of help to the expansion. Our people are assessing the data from our probes along with that coming in from other expeditions. "

"Indeed, we are pleased with your work. In my report of the unification of Savris Delta I shall mention your... proactivity to the Aun."

A new report came up on Marx's screen, prompting a reaction of mild curiosity, "Our scanners are picking up a large derelict with strange readings nearby. Do you require assistance?"

"We are debating what course of action to take. It feels almost better to catalogue it so a more militant taskforce or the Fleet can deal with it. It is dangerous to board such hulks." Mistrunner regarded a few screens and sighed.

"My Demiurg Auxiliary is also recovering from setting up the outpost. I've also a pressing need to get the Merchant Fleet more setup out here. My own feeling is patience with the hulk until Fire Caste can clear it or we find a means to propel the thing into the nearby blackhole."

Marx frowned, "Protocol dictates we sweep its trajectory with remote mines, but..."

He studied the reports with harsh scrutiny, his mechanical eye whirring.

"This ship appears to contain salvageable imperial technology and a cloaking device we have not yet encountered. You may be right to reassess its value to the Greater Good."

Another pause as he thought. Shas'el Marx was very much enthralled by technology, somewhat ironically after having dealt with the B'Gel. The secrets that lay within were entirely tempting.

"The MANTA-042 will attempt to gain more information on designated vessel - 'The Cruel Shoal'. Standby."

"As you say. In the meantime, we will continue probing the region. We need to get a stronger reading to pursue our current plans to aid the expansion."

"Agreed. My ship will leave for Subsector 0708 once our current projects are complete." Marx tapped a few orders into his console as he spoke.

"Understood. We might come that way considering some scan data. The locals could find access to our trade networks helpful. And that moon is useful potentially for the Merchant Fleet. However we will probe more nearby for the moment, unless you'd like assistance in dealing with 0708, Commander."

Mistrunner bowed his head in farewell, "Let us know. For now we will commence planning on scanning 0705 to continue building regional data while we make arrangements for other plans."

"Very well, MANTA-042 will remain in contact." Marx stopped typing to meet Mistrunner's gaze.

    "For the Greater Good, Commander."

System Survey(706):
2 Probes sent out to perform a secondary scan on the subsector. They will attempt to investigate what the pirates are up to and what these ancient ruins are. Also try to look for opportunities to exploit.

The Valkyrie Intelligence Net will be spread out on this sector with the drones and spy-flies being deployed.

Order 1:
Note: Efficiency Upgrade (17%)
Construct a Stage-1 Artillery Space Station. A space station with bombardment capabilities will be constructed to aid in the possible battle against the pirates and to eventually provide firepower support for the exploration in nearby subsectors. The space station will have higher stages of upgrades.

Order 2:
Send out drones to attempt remote hacking on the pirate systems.

Bonus Order:
Note: Efficiency Upgrade (17%)
Set out traps in the Asteroid Field. If the pirates approach, the trap will trigger and explode. If the pirate ships are not taken out by the explosion then they should be taken out by the debris. A fake damaged shell is also built around the Manta ship to make it seem as if it's a damaged Tau ship.

Turn 3

≡≡≡≡≡ ≡≡≡≡≡ ≡≡≡≡≡

Neemva took a long drink of Raenka as she tried to calm down. How... How had the Kroot managed to make such a mess of things? They had a good deal made, and it was not up in smoke because the Kroot decided to burn down the capital and so murdering the very person they needed to make the deal work. When it happened, she must have read the tactical read outs a dozen times to ensure what she was reading had been correct. There was no force on Limeda that could challenge a group of warriors armed with such tech, yet even still, the Kroot had managed to fumble the operation so badly that Neemva was unsure how to recover from it. How was she supposed to use Kroot that could barely find the ends of their rifles? Dahpak had always been a stalwart ally, a friend even, wise and coolheaded for a Shaper and yet this had transpired? The Enoulians had even managed to fumble, making their presence known and destroying the last hope of a more subtle approach and so she had to unleash the Kroot to take the planet and, somehow, they had actually managed it. She had half expected them to manage to tear the world asunder in their flailing, but at least in this one regard, she was happy to be proven wrong. Limeda had been brought into the Tau but not as she wanted it. The art that even she approved of had taken a hit and it was unclear when, or even if, Limeda would ever produce such wonders again, the traders were displeased but, in truth, she did not mind overly about their anger, they would 'get over it' or they would not. They got their prize that they would not have gotten otherwise and while it may not have gone as great as it could, and should, have, she gave them more as an apology which was better then what most would have done in her place.

Yes, Limeda was not with the Tau, but it was not the Limeda anyone wanted. Still, it was better then nothing, well, that is what Neemva hoped at least. Sadly, the blundering of the Kroot had alerted Tara of their presence and made them wary of them, especially, the paranoid survivalist who were already paranoid and trigger happy to begin with. Tara, a world she had little idea of how to tackle or deal with had suddenly become even more dangerous. She had hoped that perhaps a surgical strike against them could work, but they were dug in and outnumbered them severally. Perhaps a force could infiltrate and detonate the weapons or even recover them, but it would be risky with a small chance of success and a major chance of leading to the destruction of the planet. They would need help, or a distraction, perhaps both. The Agency and the Eldar were two likely candidates for help, well, Neemva hoped so at least. The Agency were a shadow government and while she could use their help in securing the planet, it was hard for her to really gauge their purpose or desire... and how could she trust Tara to join the Tau if they could not even trust their own government? The Eldar, on the other hand, were always a mystery. They always had a plan, a reason, for being here even if that reason made no sense to the Tau. They had no use for worlds, so they were here for something else. To gather, or collect, something and their force was considerable. Eldar were quick, with highly advanced technology and they even had a ship that could likely easily destroy her Manta in a fight... But did they have to be enemies? The Eldar wanted something and it wasn't the planet. Neemva wanted the planet and she doubted what the Eldar wanted was more important then it. The Eldar could be of great help in infiltrating and removing the threat of the survivalist.

With the exterminatus weaponry removed or taken out, the other Havens could move to finish them off. They did not like the extremists and a common foe, such as the extremist and the Agency after, could do wonders for unifying the planet to finally clear out the maltech.. There was an agent of the 'friendly' Havens in trouble, if she could save him, and not have anyone burn down the entire planet in the process, she could start pushing towards this path. This time, however, she would be overseeing the ground missions herself. This way, if there was a grand failure, it will be her own rather then one she is stuck reading from her ship, pacing back and forth and cursing the heavens for the folly of the Kroot and their stomachs.

Actions
(Tara)
1. Stealth deployment of a Fire Caste team consisting of Tau Stealth Suits [Including Neemva in her XV25 stealth suit] to Tara to rescue/assist the Haven agent in trouble.

Stealth deployment idea is to wait until the Paranoid Survivalist Holdfast is on the opposite side of the planet during its natural rotation to further the distance needed to travel for both their scanners and rockets, cut most of the power to the Manta and drop out a small drop ship before moving and turning power back on to gain their attention and hold it at a distance. Drop ship will 'coast' to Tara on minimum power to avoid their sensors to make their landing as secretive as possible. Manta will be prepared to make a tactical in-system warp jump if a rocket is fired.

(Tara)
2. Attempt to establish communications with Eldar

Bonus Action
Using Bonus Deployment to boost Stealth Deployment odds.

Probe - 0705

Unique System Configuration -- (System worth +1 VP if pacified)

Solar/Planetary array of only sector of note : Designation "Rossette" -- The center of this system consists of a tiny sized low-heat star and two large planets that do not rotate AROUND it, but actually move in a circle with it. The gravity well created by the three bodies functions as a kind of stable "Whirlpool" that keeps the bodies in position
. (Bonus to research here!)

The rest of the subsector consists of valuable gas giants and massive icy or frozen rocks.

The Rossette star is circled by the two planets Lalas and Iolos, detailed below:

Lalas:

Atmosphere

Breatheable mix
Temperature
Temperate
Biosphere
No native biosphere (Small biomes imported from elsewhere to make truly habitable regions)
Population

Failed colony (Minor Population unknown, but certain to be deceased)
Tech Level
TL2

Above Lalas is a semi-deconstructed Colony Vessel, half of which was used for the failed colony on the planet below.
Designation Colony Husk "Mazamba 6"
Occupation

Brainless automated vendors
Situation
A ship is in severe distress -- Rogue Traders operating on old intel seeking rare planetary specialty(s), ship badly damaged by gravity well tethered to Mazamba 6 and tapping supplies to survive.

Local Specialty:

Sparse populations that are degenerate colonists, barely capable of Steel alloys, produce something rare and precious to the wider galaxy. pharmaceutical extract produced by a secret recipe (LiveLong), and a remarkably popular cultural product - (Delightful Fungus Chews)

_________________________________________

Planet Iolos:

Atmosphere

Breatheable mix
Temperature
Variable temperate-to-warm
Biosphere
Immiscible (Superecosystem demonstrates massive plants and animals completely incongruent with habitation by organic lifeforms -- almost everything is predatory and/or poisonous!)
Population
Alien civilization (Population of a few million, crystalline Lithovores called "Silicoids" that are not part of the local ecosystem's diet -- they are sessile but communicate with natural hyperwave.)
Tech Level
TL0 (Silicoids do not move, or make/use technology)

Utterly Alien:

Silicoids are utterly alien and fail to even recognize Tau as fellow sentients. There may be more sophisticated problems or dynamics in their society, but there is no way to know without a way to inerpret their behavior or language.

Action 1: Gue'Vesa will commence training up for potential engagement and refreshing on alien combat doctrines from data being received.

Gue'Vesa gain Descriptor "Primed" (Bonuses/rerolls if used on offense) -- May wear off if not applied.

Action 2: Shas'El Mistrunner will commence joint training between Manta crew and Gue'Vesa (Supporting Action 1)

Manta gains "Hardened vs. boarding" -- this descriptor will not wear off, new practices and fortifications for the Manta are established to maximize cost of invasion of the Manta, and minimization of loss of territory and personnel. Ship forces fall back to increasingly concentrated hardpoints, venting life support from areas retreated from to force advance or retreat.

Water Action: Start propaganda alterations targeted towards revealed worlds and using Gue'Vesa to target Gue'la populations.

Extremely high quality and surprisingly effective materials and practices developed for local discovered populations and likely unencountered analagous populations.

Choose Bonus:

4 points of "Tauthink" -- each point converts 1/3rd of a planet to the greater good automatically. 3 points will automatically sieze a planet for the Tau, or can be used one at a time to create a strong minority/majority supporting Tau assimilation. Worth bonus .5 per point on already revealed worlds.

OR

Flat 20% bonus to all diplomatic dice rolls for rest of game.

Order Summary:
Continue construction of 'The Hadron' - Energy Efficiency / Range / Output Control
(1x Action + 1x Earth Caste Bonus Action)

Progress to Mk3 is ongoing. Acquisition/development of robots or rad-resistant crew for the Hadron would improve the situation, as a Hadron mark 3 releases lethal levels of radiation around the device. The alternative is repeated disruption of crew assigned to run it (Rad poisoning and deaths), or keeping the Hadron at Mk2.

Send Simulacra Auxiliary to Il-Fannor to offer services in goodwill
(1x Action)
This action fulfills the sufficient condition of making a place that is safe and comfortable for R&R Crocodile Crocodile and gives Kloudy Kloudy 1 VP.

Shas'El Marx gains 1 use of "Il-Fannor logistical support" : This doubles any resource gathering or trade action effectiveness, or triples the effective quantity of forces used in a combat drop.

Probe Scan of 'The Cruel Shoal' - Interior / Exterior
(2x Scan)

(Ask 6 questions in discord about the Cruel Shoal and they will be exposited upon)

Kent Kent :

Bombardment platform built at turn in largest asteroid belt, grabbing asteroids at top speed rounding a bend, captured and flung with great precision in or out of system. Station is currently well hidden, but it is only a matter of time before it is discovered by Pirates. DO NOT LET THIS HAPPEN!

Perk and Quirk:
Quirk:
Sessile (Bombartment platform cannot safely move, dependent on nearby asteroids for ammo)
Perk: Whopper (Bombardment platform 3x effective in system. 2x effective within 3 hexes)

Order 2:
Send out drones to attempt remote hacking on the pirate systems.

Hacking Completely successful. You may:
A) falsify communications between fleets of pirates/pirates in different sectors -- causing them to take a desired action.
OR
B) Direct Override -- 0704 (Polasgo Subsector Only) -- Shutdown all Pirate tech except life support and impulse power for short period of time.

Trapping and disguising are two actions. As such, both operations checked at a penalty. Traps are produced but not disseminated. Disguise is a failure, 2 Pirate ships coming to investigate. (Discord Event)

Taskforce Mistrunner: Turn 3

Por'El Tradeflow.jpg

The meeting room was set, drinks out on coasters the chilled or warmed them as data readers were placed. Shas'El Mistrunner assumed his position at the head of the table, tapping controls to bring up probe data. Subsector 0705 flashed into position with several highlighted points.

"As you know, our primary objective for now is to find and establish trade hubs for the Merchant Fleet. Doing so along the border will create a viable logistics line for pushing deeper into the Sector. This subsector poses something interesting. A stranded Rogue Trader vessel. This is a potential boon if we could salvage the ship for our own needs, more so if we could convince the Rogue Traders to embrace Tau'va. This failed colony demands examination since it means a potential rare commodity that was found here. Something the Merchant Fleet would breathe life back into the colony for, which we can offer to the survivors," said Mistrunner before pausing to take a drink from his cup.
\
"Our bigger issue is the pirates that Taskfore Valkyrie are engaging with. Hopefully the Shas'El there can eliminate them, but it means we should be prepared for trouble in our zone. I imagine a reason this colony failed is potentially even from some pirate raiding," said Por'El Tradeflow with a sigh as he starts to show some data received from Valkyrie's scans. He does though input the highlights to focus on the worlds and system. "However, this system has very high value if we can bring it fully under control. The issue is going to be figuring out the crystalline entities on Iolos."

"Mmm, silicoids. Always a strange lot no matter what world you find them on and what type they be. Different kind of life," intoned Elder Voidsmith as he produce a curious device he was packing some form of dried leaf into. A button press moments later reveal it to be a curious technological pipe. He puffs on it and chuckles as the air vent above him snaps on to suck up his smoke.

"My men are ready for trouble, Shas'El. The Bastillian Rangers never balk at a challenge. We'll take pirates or fend off hostiles. You just give the word," stated Captain Vaulrie with the thump of a gloved hand. His uniform was a bit ostentatious, but the Bastillians were too reliable and helpful to mind their somewhat flashy appearance. They got results and knew their roles well. Even the Elder seemed to not mind them too much, knowing they'd stand between the Demiurg and any incoming threat without question or concern.

"My intent is to clear the 700 zones, comrades. Others are working at it, but unlike them, we have a large concern. Total control of this sector demands logistical lines be built. The initial lines must start along the border. From there, the Fleet can find points of entry. The Merchant Fleet will also find it easier to come in to acquire goods to take back home, while uplifting those we find here to introduce to the Tau'va. We start with 0705. If we can take it fully. It will become Trade Hub 01. From there we can push on towards our end goal," Mistrunner said as he taps more controls to indicate 0700. "Another Taskforce is at work there, but we need to end up on location no matter what. The Endurium mining demands it become one of the three trade hubs requested by the Il-Fannor."

"We have a bumpy ride ahead, but I believe we shall succeed, my friend," Tradeflow put in with a confident smile, always the one to speck encouragement in such combined operations. "We have the means and the will. The Tau'va will prosper from our efforts and those we save will understand our ways. Let's us see what wealth we can bring home."

"I'll drink to that," Elder Voidsmith declared with a laugh and took up a tankard to drink deeply from it. Captain Vauldrie joining him with his own glass, raising it in salute beforehand. The taskforce certainly wasn't lacking in spirit.

Commanders Log
Second Entry

Shas'Saal Ke'lshan Alesh stomped into the drop bay, eager to talk with his Cadre heads after their latest campaign.

Bathed in the pale blue glow of the room's light, the Fire Warrior seemed almost ghostly in appearance as he moved, the ultra-dense nanocrystalline metal armour encasing his stout frame making him look like a walking trash receptacle. But despite his meagre height of 5'3, the Fire Warrior was a formidable presence. With cold black eyes, a permanent scowl and enough muscle to rival a Knarloc, Alesh was more a trash compactor than a bin.

Standing before the three Auxiliary Captains, Alesh bore his gaze from left to right, looking each one of them over with measured scrutiny. Resting his gaze on the Galg Commander, he motioned for her to speak. Arching her gelatinous frame backwards, her many arms by her side, the Matriarch spoke in a sophisticated symphony of sound. With no visible sensory organs bar the cluster of eye like stalks on top of their 'heads', the Galg had no perceivable means to speak but yet she elegantly did. Sounding like a glass harmonica, the Xenos Veteran spiritedly laid out the results and tallies of their last foray.

"Good. Good" spoke Alesh, pacing back and forth in front of his Commanders. He waved his arm, not breaking his stride, as he opened the floor to the Gue'vesala.

Standing at over 6 feet tall, the Amazonian woman's voice boomed despite the slur of her scar crossed lips. "Indeed, it was a good day for the Greater Good" she acknowledged, looking at her Galg comrade "We were lucky we broke the Imperial charge when we did. I could almost hear the whir of their chainswords..."

"We make our own luck, Gue Die Anna." I growled Alesh, standing and glaring at the Sergeant "Through our own strength and perseverance, we can overcome our enemies. And our own weaknesses. As a member of the Ya'va Skether'Qan I would think you would know this"

The Gue'vesala hung her head, though she had a viable point. Melee combat was usually devoted to the Kroot, their ravenous nature and bloodthirst making them exceptionally talent for the role. But their belief in the Greater Good was sorely lacking and Alesh wanted only the staunchest believers of the greater Tau vision here in his elite cadre. And the three races before him were the epitome of true believers.

"You are correct though" granted the Tau Commander. "They came eminently close to our position, quite possibly forcing us in to melee combat. A situation that may have tipped the scales in their favour."

There was a hiss from the Vespid, the membrane of his chitinous wings bristling in defiance. Alesh held up his hand and retorted quickly, before the Strain Leader could begin his rant "My only concession is to the strength of melee, friend. Not the battle. We were destined for victory because of our belief in the Greater Good. That is what makes us one of the elite Cadres of the Tau Empire!"

The Vespids wings settled as everyone murmured their agreement.

"While we are confined to our Manta as we wait for our probes to finish their scans, I think drills are in order..."

Action 1: Probe scan in Sector 702

Action 2: CQC training will be performed on ship by Fire Caste, Guevasa, Vespid and Galg (Bonus Military Deployment used if applicable/necessary)

Action 3: Crisis suit pilots will train themselves in the Retaliation Cadre Formation, practising deployment and tactics on nearby asteroids, if applicable.

Former Warriors

The locals of this world were once famed for their martial prowess. They may have simply had a very militaristic culture, or were genetically engineered for combat, or developed high-tech weaponry, or had brilliant leadership. Those days are past, however, either due to crushing defeat, external restrictions, or a cultural turn toward peace.

Enemies:
  • Unreformed warlord leader
  • Bitter mercenary chief
  • Victim of their warfare seeking revenge
Friends:
  • Partisan of the new peaceful ways
  • Outsider desperate for military aid
  • Martial genius repressed by the new dispensation
Complications:
  • Neighboring worlds want them pacified or dead
  • Runaway "Eye for an Eye" left everyone blind
  • The source of their gifts has been "turned off" in a reversible way -- There must be a duel for a new King before anyone else can duel. The King is safe from duels in orbit, surrounded by skilled warriors.
Things:
  • War trophy taken from a defeated foe (Head of the previous king, Kept in orbit)
  • Key to re-activating their martial ways (A duel slaying the current oligarch/king)
  • Secret cache of high-tech military gear (This planet was once a recruiting world for a space marine chapter. Very old Imperial weapon and equipment patterns are buried here)
Places:
  • Cemetery of dead heroes
  • Memorial hall now left to dust and silence
  • Monument plaza dedicated to the new culture (a new culture of supposed peace?)
