An insight into the Syrenrei thought process:
"Haha, I made a comment about hot guys, I am so clever"
"Oh, I have an alert. I wonder what it is?"
"It's liking of a post, super cool, and.... what's this, a reply to the OCC? It's probably just X saying she'll post... wait what? Musician replied? MAYBE I'M GETTING A HOT GUY NPC, OH MY GOD."
"Oh, she's just denying Ronan"

i'll post in a bit. life is kinda happening to me at the moment.

Beat life mercilessly to show your dominance.

Serious question, but why 'hot' men? I've noticed the Americans and Canadians always, always go for the hot male character or love interest. It baffles me. In France it is women who have the power. It is women who dominate in relationships ( it's equal, of course, but it's ... less patriarchal. It's understood that the power is in the woman when it comes to dating. Men in English-speaking countries are seen as the 'pursuer' or the ones that ask for a second date, et cœtera. Not in France ).

I don't mean to sound rude, but it is an honest question I have. France is by no means equal when it comes to men and women, but there is more respect and love for women than it is for the men. It could be because the United States has not reached sexual equality and still faces higher sexism than that of France.

I only joke about this because in my personal experience:
  1. A majority of the roleplayers in the RPs I am in are female.
  2. A majority of female roleplayers enjoy playing female characters the most.
  3. Many male roleplayers like playing pretty female characters, meaning...
  4. I have yet to be in any roleplay with a male majority (even a slight one).
  5. I have been invited to and involved in many roleplays with a significant female majority. One a friend starts soon is almost exclusively female, and a friend invited me to a quintet with only one male character, for example.
  6. A lot of those female characters are explicitly very beautiful, so it's rare for me to see an roleplay devoid of "hot women";
  7. I like looking at men, even fictional ones, just like my lesbian BFF or my husband would prefer looking at a hot woman instead of a hot dude.
"Domination" has no real play in it. It is rare for detailed roleplayers to really like romance (as much as I exalt it), so in the absence of people willing to that sort of subplot, I like to have pretty men to look at. There are plenty of female characters that are attractive, but they don't do as much for me. =) My longest-running roleplay is a 1x1 wherein I actually play a very assertive and aggressive woman that "wears the pants" in the relationship.

So this doesn't necessarily reflect out of character values. Do I like looking at an attractive guy? Sure. But my husband isn't a supermodel and in practice, in "real life," I am attracted to intellect and humor above all else. We work as a partnership; he takes charge on some matters, I take charge on others depending on who is most invested in a decision.

RPN though? At least with the genres I am involved with, it is very female-dominated.

P.S. I would totally romance the fuck out of just about any dude character, even an ugly one, but I respect the wishes of mundanes. In my other RPs, my 29-year-old is infatuated with a 46-year-old guy, and another is a 37-year-old about to get involved with a 40-year-old who is attractive but his job is a janitor. I think I've had exactly one RP where I was with a Prince Charming type and that was because it was based off fairy tales. A priestess in a RP long past had a thing for a guy who was, shall we say, not very intellectually gifted and it showed a lot. I had another with a cyborg character. Yet another with a barbarian that didn't practice good hygiene. Another prospect was heavily scarred and explicitly no longer handsome (and also a jerk). I'm starting to see a pattern here now that I really think about it...

You just have to consider that, through most of its early history, the New Continent was surprisingly Old-fashioned :P

Modern American countries were mostly established by Radical Protestants and Spanish Catholics. We could say that those ideas and moral standpoints still have left some markings in the general way of thinking of an important part of the population. Neither women nor men have yet had the chance to complete cultural self-determination; some people like it and have it that way and others rebel BY DOING THE TOTAL OPPOSITE OF WHAT SOCIETY SAYS BECAUSE WE TRANSATLANTICS ARE EDGY AF.

I say we just make EVERYONE HOT and have a PIRATE PAGEANT.
LET DIABLO OPEN THE CEREMONY.

As a person who lived in Essonne, I can say that some French girls do like burly guys ;)
C'est la drague.Tout le monde a quelque chose.

yes. she will absolutely not insinuate that he has illicit relations with goats and does not deserve a dog as wonderful as Diablo.

but like honestly she'll be fine once she gets some food in her. she is a lightweight and drank on an empty stomach whilst having a lot of FEELINGS. or like maybe she won't be FINE but she'll be better and not crying all over the place.
She does have an hour or so to grab some food and stuff her feelings back inside. (I tried to rewrite that second part, honestly I did. Please just read it with humor!)

Eye candy? I like making ordinary(ish) looking characters myself rather than supermodels, because there's a lot more ordinary people than there are models. I still like to look at the models though.

I hadn't thought about it until Syrenrei pointed it out, but RpN does have a lot of female RPers here. I started with D&D tabletop, and that's usually dominated by males (or at least stereotypically so, and in my personal experience). The roleplays I've been in on RpN have been much more balanced.

I don't think it has anything to do with sexual equality. In Japan it is also culturally presented as the woman being the one to pursue the man (maybe Valentines having something to do with this). And as much as it saddens me, I do not see Japan as a paragon of sexual equality. In fact they consistently rank quite poorly in that regard among the MEDC.
I wouldn't say it's always the other way around in the US, either. Especially these days it has become a lot more understood as anyone's game. I have done my fair share of both asking and being asked. xD We also have things like Sadie Hawkins dances haha. What is presented in pop culture like movies is often an outdated exaggeration of the truth.

That being said there does seem to be a recent (probably third wave feminism [spoiler alert: I'm no expert in this field]) push for women in the US to embrace their sexuality and put it on display as much as men are perceived to do. So I'm not at all against recent marketing trends that cater towards women and hey, if you want to put your desire for a hot man on display, go for it. B)
I mean Japan has appreciated the buying power of women since the 90s leading to a kind of crazy fangirl culture and even the subculture there has been greatly expanding their female-oriented catering in the past few years.

I think RPN is a bit more balanced in terms of m->f RP character ratio than previous sites I was on. This could also be the bias of my sample pool. I have noticed a majority of mundane ( ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) ) tend to be female, and I agree it is the complete opposite in the tabletop community, which I also geekily enjoy haha. I feel like instinctively I know the reason for this but it's something I can't eloquently vocalize. Cosplay, though distantly related, also tends to be a female-dominated field.

Personally I usually try and provide characters to balance the ratio Libras, seeking balance in all things, so in the beginning I played mainly males, and eventually that just became my main line lol. Though I'm perfectly comfortable and willing to play whatever. I like to edge out of my comfort zone to play characters of all ages, personalities, genders, sexualities, ethnicities, etc, but I admit I have a heavy bias towards the attractive, at least for RPing. I mean if I have to stare at someone I want it to be a face I don't despise lol. Even if it's a face I want to punch...
I think that's just my writing / reading preference too, since I tend towards authors / genres who use a lot of melodramatic imagery and metaphors of light and dark, beauty and ugliness, goodness and sin. I'm a slut for pretty imagery of all kinds and even scenery/costume porn. I've never been much of a self-fulfillment kind of chap (maybe because of my theatre background), but I can certainly see the appeal of using RPing as that kind of outlet, and wouldn't begrudge anyone from doing so.
I mean I watch a sht ton of anime so you sort of get used to suspending your belief on the level of attractive characters all ganging up to do plot. Hollywood uses this same ploy because how would they otherwise sell movies? The beautiful woman is their marketing point. Though it sort of backfires on people like me who don't share Hollywood's definition of beauty.

I'm half asleep and this tangent is all over the place. Probably. otZ

But I can say this RP is an excellant example of one with a healthy balance between male characters and female. :3

I'm waiting on The One Called X The One Called X before I do my next post. I hear she's currently beating life, not to be confused with LifeNovel, to assert her dominance.

Good. If it helps y'all are free to address me by these other nicknames that I've earned from other users from RPN: Novs, Novel, Nobel, Auto, Autobee. Cause sometimes I will find myself thinking people are talking about me but then they're not.
