Just cause I read worse don't mean it ain't cursed
In the small city of Leefside, as rain dripped from the cracked gutters of a Pokémon-friendly apartment complex, buzzing screens flickered to life as their users tuned into a local news network. The building was filled with equal parts dread and anticipation as the voice of a kind-looking young woman came to life across the city.
"The people are pushing for city-wide bans on all large Pokémon tonight after another explosive, illegal street battle on Main ravaged nearby stores and injured civilians."
Sure enough, in the background of the shot, between the ruins of what might have been a building, or maybe a fountain, a swarm of people shouted demands, waving brightly-colored cardboard signs, and crowding a pair of city officials. The officials' words were lost in the sea of protestors, but the stress on their faces was clear.
"We still don't know what this means for Handlers, but the community of Trainers in the city have made it very clear that their way of life depends on their Pokémon partners. One thing is certain, though; the Pokémon battles must be stopped at all costs."
In this world, the previous aesthetic of Pokémon (traipsing around the world at 13 with nothing but a bunch of superpowered monsters and a spunky attitude) is a few centuries in the past, having been shed with the invention of safety regulations and concerned parents. Now, going out to find Pokémon is the equivalent of telling someone you're going to go pick up a venomous snake bare-handed and stuff it in a sack. In short, no one does it but the professionals.
Speaking of professionals—
The "professionals" of this world are called "Pokémon Handlers". They are people whose entire job revolves around keeping the wild Pokémon in check. They have Pokémon of their own, yes, but they only get them after weeks—sometimes even months—of training and learning regulations. After training, they then get a license and a starter Pokémon. These people are the only ones with Pokéballs like great balls or speed balls, as there's no reason to have better Pokéballs when you're not supposed to be going out looking for Pokémon.
"Pokémon Trainers" are something completely different. Trainers are much like the Pokémon trainers of old. Those rare few who go out to befriend an elemental monster with nothing but the shirt on their back and a cheap Pokéball sold for the price of a good eevee collar. These people, though not illegal because all of the traditionalist families would go positively batshit, are generally regarded as absolute assholes by the rest of the population, as trainers are the ones who start the most Pokémon battles, which if it was not already obvious, are illegal. And dangerous.
Pokémon battles were outlawed all across the main continent due to a number of reasons, not the least of which being that many Pokémon died, some trainers died, and it's all-in-all a bit of a shitty thing to do to innocent animals with too much intelligence that trust you. Though, this has increased the number of Pokémon on their first evolution, as Pokémon only evolve in dire circumstances.
Pokémon have also grown more aggressive due to the lack of human foot traffic through their territory. The Pokémon who wouldn't have batted an eye at a small, peaceful humanoid meandering through their woods now believe them to be a threat and might attack unprovoked, which is bad, because these Pokémon are Pokémonsters, and have less of a "fight to display" and more of a "fight to kill" demeanor. Very bad when you're a 13yr old, squishy human child.
Pokémon in general can be split into two groups; domestic and wild. Domestic Pokémon have all normal-type moves and are mons like espeon, umbreon, eevee, litten—etc. They're like small pets. Domestic Pokémon can learn non-normal-type moves (if their species can), but they have to be trained.
Wild Pokémon are just slightly scarier, definitely more realistically-designed (simply for the aesthetic) versions of the Pokémon we know and love. They get all of their attacks, and are generally a little bigger than their domestic counterparts (if they have one).
Though shiny Pokémon can be found in the wild, they are most often known as Pokémon bred for a certain thing, whether it be color, a certain attack, etc. They often have health defects or can't survive in the wild because of their new coloration. Shinies do not have to be the color of the Gamefreak official designs, just don't go batshit. There will be no rainbow-colored Pokémon with obscenely high speed or strength or whatever. I would like this roleplay, though there will be a fair bit of fluff and comedy, to keep a semi-realistic feel.
Handler:
Hired professional who gets paid to keep wild (and sometimes domestic) Pokémon in check. They have a license and resources that Trainers most definitely do not, however, their Pokémon selection is almost always limited to the starter Pokémon, as those are the easiest to breed in captivity.
Some may start with a keystone, though not the matching -ite for their Pokémon.Pokéballs are given, so long as the request has good reason. Can usually get places Trainers can't with their Pokémon.Good law-enforcement vibes. These guys can only have starter Pokémon as their first Pokémon.
Trainer:
"Hobbyist". Much like the trainers in the franchise, just in 10x more danger on every level for the rest of their lives. These people are generally regarded as scum of the Earth or generic criminals because a very small population of traditionalists are obsessed with Pokémon battles, despite never having trained to not... I don't know. Murder the opponent.
Some may start with a Z-ring, but not the matching crystal.Pokéballs are cheap and fairly easy for wild or caught Pokémon to break out of.Are usually more connected with the worse parts of the city on account of the portion of the battle-obsessed population. Were usually kicked out at a young age, because in this world, people that are like 13 are considered mature. This is not the best thing in the world for obvious reasons. These ones can have any Pokémon as their first Pokémon, but if it's a strong one, you'd better gimme a damn good reason.
Mechanics:
Each player may start with up to 1 fully-evolved Pokémon and a domestic Pokémon (domestic Pokémon don't count toward the 6-Pokémon team)Mythical Pokémon are not strictly banned, but I will hold their players to a higher standard and it'll require a hella good backstory on why.I will be using a random generator to decide what players are getting what items/Pokémon next, but keep in mind, these will not be even odds, as trying to find a mega stone is a lot harder than finding an oddish.Battle outcomes will be decided between the players before the battle gets started, and if a decision is not reached before then, then I'll either flip a coin or hold a vote with the other players of the RP. They will be run in the style of the anime, but if I must roll for damage and health, then I will, but only if combat lasting too long on account of no one letting it end becomes an issue.Moving through biomes has the same effect as being transferred through generations. I will trust the players not to abuse this, but I am willing to take it away.If a Pokémon knows a move, then it logically knows the relating moves to that. So if a Pokémon knows thunder bolt, then it probably knows discharge, too. But if a Pokémon knows firefang it's not going to automatically know flamethrower because firefang is contact-based. If a Pokémon uses its abilities in a way it isn't used to, then the attack probably won't be as good as its normal attack.I will not be controlling the wild Pokémon that players intend to catch, but I also expect the characters to work toward their goals, so too-easy catches too many times might cause this to change.Keep in mind that these Pokémon are animals with some extreme intelligence and that trying to catch an electrike is like picking up a dingo and trying to shove it in your backpack.
Rules:
☆This would be a semi-to-literate roleplay, at least a paragraph per post. As long as it's readable and substantial, though, I don't have too much of an opinion.
☆There would not be a strict post order, but try not to post over people. We have lives.
☆ OOC chat will be on discord, so a discord is required
☆ Powerplayers will be kicked immediately. I will not warn people more than once, once the IC is up.
☆Don't forget to check the CS thread for more character guidelines and lore once it's up.
☆If you read these, put a random Digimon in the "What's your favorite Pokémon" section of the character sheets.
☆ I will try not to close applications unless we have more than 10 players.
☆Be respectful and mindful of your other rpers. If someone says to stop something, then stop.
Synopsis
This is a Pokémonster roleplay; a roleplay about Pokémon, but leaning much more toward realism and making Pokémon absolutely terrifying (think the live-action Pokémon movie if it was rated PG-14 for dark themes and blood). This roleplay will be focusing a lot on slice-of-life and the effects of Pokémon on people and society. Battling will be... not really that relevant until a little later on, but even then, I don't want to focus on it, because that's been done over so many times that I don't really wanna think about it too much.
The plot follows, roughly, that having large Pokémon has slowly been becoming illegal in more and more cities, with Leefside being one of the last that still has no restrictions. That is rapidly changing, however, as Pokémon are being banned from more and more places to the extent that if you own any one over the size of a medium-sized Espeon, you will have to rent an apartment that accepts "large" Pokémon. It's getting more and more difficult for Trainers and Handlers (see; "Handler vs. Trainer") to even exist in the city. This is the first arc of the roleplay, with the following arcs being player-decided.
Don't forget to at least skim the tabs; there's quite a bit of stuff I didn't mention in the hook.
