“There are plenty of places you can go to train. You can kinda do it anywhere.”
Esther toyed with a scarlet lock while she thought back to her short, but eventful, weeks as a trainer.
“In Kalos I visited a place called the Battle Chateau, they host Pokémon Battles and grant their members ranks based on how well they do. They’re bound to have training facilities as a battle club. There’s a battle club nearby, actually. I was going to visit it but…plans changed. Just down the road is the Battle Tower where they let trainers test their skills.”

“There’s more to it than Battle clubs though: tournaments, events, battle establishments. In Lumiose there’s a Café that lets you battle its waiters, if you win within the time limit then you eat for free.”

“Training happens…well, everywhere. If you want something more…stationary, then you can even intern under a Gym Leader. My friend, Reina, you met her, ya? She’s training under the Cianwood Gym Leader.”

Aldon looked over the edge of window down at the region below. Skol grinned at Politoad and the two wooper bounced up and down to get a better look at the happy toad. Skol was happily taking in the moment, not a care in the world despite being completely oblivious as to what the moment he was taking in was. He Aldon turned to look at Emma and chuckled.

"Yeah, Skol surprises me sometimes too. He's always been a special boy" Aldon shrugged and looked at Skol whom was cheerfully in his own little world. The two wooper on his back bounced up and down to look out the windows. Aldon was surprised that Emma's parents had a crazy encounter with several lampent.

"I bet its scarier in person than by story. Sounds like your parents had a terrifying encounter, but the results turned out pretty great cause it lead to their eventual relationship and you" Aldon leaned to his right side and scratched his chin. Despite Desmond's wishes, Aldon grinned, snapping his fingers at Desmond.

"Say less! Don't worry, you'll be the first person I'll call if we see a lampent cause you're a great photographer!" As Aldon spoke, his magnemite Zippy was admiring a circuit breaker.

The poor Riolu looked quite dejected. But, it was good that she seemed to accept it, as she wouldn't want one of Theo's best performing Pokemon to end up hospitalized because of her attempt at learning Aura Sphere too early.

With Theo's answer, she chuckled as she realized he hadn't even looked up of their attacks. She might have forgotten to have him download the Attackdex earlier, but oh well. He has it now. She nodded at his plan of action.

Naka waited for them outside of the center, only to feel dizzy. Her head hurt, and she felt this rage suddenly course through her. She wanted to pick a fight, but she had to keep herself stable. She took in a deep sigh, trying to focus on the scent of the Chikorita next to her, who realized she wasn't doing well.

Naka decided that maybe being outside wasn't a good idea, so she had her Silenus carry her to a table inside the Pokemon Center, where she slid off his back and onto a seat. She took calming breaths in and out before the source of the rage was quelled and then disappeared. She took a deep sigh of relief, but she still had to hold her head with one hand, groaning at how badly it spun.

Esther piped up while Naka recovered from Krem's angry outburst of energy earlier. Once Esther was done explaining, Naka had a gander at it. Although, her voice was still strained. "Yup... But if you're looking for specific battle place where they will teach you, a battle club or being a gym trainer for a gym leader is best. They teach you while you're fighting. I don't know what the hourly rate is on those fu-... Mngh..." She silenced herself, took in a deep breath, and then continued. "Dunno how much it'll cost, but don't worry about it. It shouldn't be a lot."

She groaned, rubbing her temples together, her Chikorita in her lap gave a strained trill and blasted her with a sudden green wave of sweet-smelling aromas-

"Ah-A-ACHOO!"

She sneezed immediately but caught it with her arm before it sprayed all over the table, only to chuckle. "Ah... That strangely helped. I guess sneeze the bad vibes out of me, huh?" This got the sweet little Chikorita giggling in amusement.

Rick waited on a couch as he waited for the results of the exam. For someone who had failed it thrice, he seemed to be very confident for once. "So? What's the verdict?" He asked with a smirk in his face, as the examiner came out. "Well... you passed. But I wish you had shown this much commitment from the beginning. Would've saved us a lot of time and trouble." Rick righted himself on the couch. "To be fair, the test was so easy, I had to play dumb so I could enjoy school a little longer. Besides, there's no fun in getting a Flight License if it's not even a challenge." The lady raised her brows, blinking in silence. "Anyways!" Rick shrugged. "Shall we skip to the good part, then?"

"Not yet, I'm afraid. The person who's responsible for the practical lessons is not a teacher from the academy, so we'll need to call him first. Given how busy he is, you can expect to start on Monday. Because weekend is right around the corner and I don't think he would come today." She explained. Rick rolled his eyes. "Then tell him I don't mind having lessons on weekends. I have nothing to do. In fact, tell me where I can find him and I'll just call him personally." Having said that, Rick's eyes shifted to the door as it opened. "That won't be necessary!" A blue-haired man stepped in. Rick's eyes widened. "Him?!" He exclaimed. "Oh! Looks like you're in luck afterall. Rick, I'd like to introduce to you, The Elegant Master of Flying Pokémon. Falkner!"

Falkner walked towards them. "Well, thanks for the warming introduction! I'll take it over from here." He said, scratching the back of his hair. The lady grinned and walked off, leaving the two trainers to talk. "Now! Let me introduce myself properly. I'm Falkner! Violet City Gym Leader and Flying-type specialist. And as you may have surmised, I'll be your teacher for pretty much the rest of the course." The Gym Leader stretched his hand for a shake. "Make no mistake though, this isn't a Gym Challenge. So don't expect a badge at the end of it." Rick raised from the couch to greet him. "I figured that much. And I'm not in for badges either way." The Gym Leader nodded. "As you may imagine, the school is not equipped for the practical lessons. So why don't we go to the Gym and get started right away?"

Once outside, Falkner took a moment to look over Iris. "So this is the Rapidash they talked about. Doesn't look anything special to me, at first glance." He commented, rubbing his chin. Iris scowled, her mane briefly flaring up as she growled. "Nonetheless, I look forward to see in first hand what she can do when she gets her wings." He added. Rick approached them with arms crossed. "How much were you told about it already?" He asked. "I know she can turn into a flying-type. That's what caught my interest. There were sightings in the Whirl Islands, Cianwood, Olivine, the Safari Zone... it's not really a secret at this point in Johto. News travel quicker than a Pidgeot, so it wouldn't surprise me if other regions start knowing about it as well." He told. Rick frowned "Yeah. That's what starts to concern me..." He muttered.

Upon arriving at the Gym, Rick looked around and above as he stepped through the doors. "It's been a while since I was in a Gym." He commented, as he walked up to a platform that would lift him and the Gym Leader to the top floor. "So! From what I was told, you're not a complete beginner to the flight scene, are you? In fact, judging by how many rules you have broken so far, you must really enjoy flying." Rick raised an eyebrow. "And you would be wrong... at least when it comes to enjoying it. I only do it out of necessity." Falkner scratched the corner of his mouth. "What pokémon do you typically fly on?" He asked. Rick looked over at the sky, as Pearl floated through the window and next to him. "Her." He pointed with a thumb.

"A Dragonair, huh?" Falkner rubbed his chin. "Not quite a flying-type yet, at least until she evolves." He commented. Rick crossed his arms. "She does a better job than a Dodrio, that's for sure. And who said anything about evolving?" Falkner grinned. "I guess you have a point there. Still, their skin is so smooth, it's hard to get a grip. I hope you don't expect to do aerial stunts with her." He stated. "And that's exactly why I refrain from flying unless I really need it. She likes aerial stunts a little too much!" He threw Pearl a scolding look. The dragon looked away, whistling and rubbing her cheek with the tip of her tail. "I see... well! For the first part of practical course, you're gonna use one of our rental Ride Pokémon." Falkner gestures to a Pidgeot, who had just landed on the wooden platform with a saddle already on. Rick ran towards it and leaned over the equipment. "What is this?"

"Someone who got this far on the course and is already a veteran rider should know what a saddle is." Falkner said, crossing his arms. "Well, obviously I know what it is. I just never use them. First time I tried it, my butt wouldn't stop complaining until two days after, and I swore never more." Rick stated. "Understandable. While they're not mandatory, the League strongly recommends their usage. But some trainers prefer to be more in touch with their pokémon and forego saddles. You may opt for using one of your own pokémon for the final exam, but until then, it is mandatory for Ride Pokémon to use one." He explained. Rick sighed. "It is what it is. When do we start?" He asked. Falkner grinned with eyes closed. "Now!" He grabbed a pokéball from his belt and sent out his own Pidgeot, climbing onto it. "For the first lesson, you'll follow me and my instructions. So get on, and let's catch some air!"

He thought for a few seconds before nodding. "Yeah. Reina. I remember her...I think? She was at the Whirl Cup, right?" That had to be it. Or was that Charlotte? Fuck. No, that had to be it. That's the only other place he's been so far. Well, that and the boat of course. Ooh but there was the Safari Zone too. "I'm not too good with names or faces if we've only met once." Theo went over the options presented him mentally as they were brought up, nodding as he weighed the pros and cons to each offered course of action. "Interning under a gym leader...that has...mm, well." he would mutter, jumping slightly when Naka sneezed. "Well I'm awake now, thanks for that." He chuckled, relaxing back in to his seat. "Interning. That I...actually wouldn't mind doing. Getting a better idea of what I'm actually doing. Learning from a professional. Because I am...as clueless as they come right now. But, on the other side of the coin" he turned his attention to the entrance of the pokemon center for a few seconds before back to the two of them "There's literally a whole world out there to see. If I hunker down in one place for too long, I might not see all of it. Or any of it. And I've never been too good at staying in one place." He thought for a few seconds "Buuut. Maybe. For the better of myself, I should give it a shot? As it stands, you two are the most knowledgeable people I know. So....what do the both of you suggest?"

Esther’s instinct sang of her wanderlust. She wasn’t one to settle down; she could hardly sit still for a minute! How long had she been away from Oblivia? How ever many weeks she’d been away from home, she eagerly matched in the number of regions she had visited—Unova, Galar, Galar, Johto… Why ever would she suggest settling down to another?

However, inspecting the reality of her journey, Esther could admit she had settled down to learn the ropes and pad her finances. But therein lay the crux of the matter,
Down to two things: one, do you like to travel; two, can you…afford it?”

“Pokémon aren’t cheap, food alone is a hefty expense and then pair that with travel costs like transportation and lodging. Personally, the nomad life is great, but it is a bit of a hustle and you’ll need to stop every now and again to win a cash-prize tournament or pick up a temp. job or two to keep your finances afloat. If you’re willing to do all that then…stay on the move, there’s no better teacher than first-hand experience.”

While Andy moved on to the contest stage, Reina clipped on around Reggie's arm and dragged him towards the bleachers to try and get a good sit. "Move that tushie! Skiddadle!" Reina called out as she walked with Reggie. She was testing the new language she was learning that day. She was sure she heard some farmer say that while telling either his cowboy or the Miltank that were being led by a Rockruff to move along.

As soon as Reina saw a spot, she let go of the blonde boy and started running towards it. "Better move it before the Murkrow start squaking!"

The Metztlian found a spot on the edge and took a seat, leaving enough space for Reggie. At least, that was the intention. Diva and Flora jumped on to his spot. The Clefairy looking smug and smart while Ivysaur was just happy to be part of the scheme. Reina placed her hands on her hips and looked at the two Pokemon. "Diva, don't teach Flora bad manners. I have to spend as much time as possible with Reggie before he leaves."

Diva rolled her eyes and jumped off, with Flora joyfully following after. The two started to wonder around, with Diva giving Reggie a stink eye as she walked by him. Reina waited for Reggie to sit down before looking ahead at the stage. "Vamos, Andy!"

Tesla moves Tackle, cotton spore, thundershock thunder wave

Friday August 12th Marko village (mareep festival)

Team: Azurill (Aquamarine), Flaaffy(Tesla), Cleffa (Ruby), Igglybuff (Parfait), Ledyba (Iris)

Andy moves on to the contest stage with Tesla and waits for everyone to settle down a bit as an announcement was made for any and all contest goers to head to the stage. Once it appears that Andy is the only one to actually participate in this aspect of the festival , there is a tiny fanfare as the MC welcomes the audience, from here is where Andy hears Reina say "¡Vamos Andy!"

Andy is very nervous, here is his 1st 'contest' he had to put on a good show for the gazing audience but he had to think on the fly of how to do that.

Andy gives Tesla a nod, and has him start with a cotton spore, spreading white spores into the air, as they spread out a bit, a thunder wave and some thundershocks follow this, some electricity cutting through the spores while some bounce off them creating a small electrical storm in the air. This little storm would hang in the air while Tesla is made to dash into it before dispersing it with another thunder shock, the cotton then drifts down along the stage while Tesla prances among the cotton looking cute with his little bo, some cotton sticking to him

A separate use of thunder wave issued from Andy would have the sheeps tail glowing a faint yellow while the cotton that clung to his wool floats up in yellowish white orbs thanks to electromagnetism. From here, with Andy's help, Tesla is made to twirl on his hooves before casting off those cotton orbs among the stage . A few more moments of trainer and pokémon prancing together precedes the two bowing signaling the end of their performance. Andy just hopes they enjoyed the show, he was still nervous, even as the performance ended.

Naka had only a brief run-in with Reina before, but she remembered her. Pretty full of life and fire to fight. Naka chuckled as Theo got lost in the vague recollections of names and faces. "Reina's that young girl who likes to battle a lot and have fun. The other one we met, Charlotte, was taller, paler, had different hair, and was more of a researcher."

Naka paused, wanting Theo to really think about what he wants to do. She chuckled as Theo sneezed, and listened as Theo expressed his wanderlust. She hummed, listening to Esther's piece. She nodded, giving a sheepish look. "Yes, while I agree that traveling would help with your understanding of the world, you also need prior knowledge to better catalyze on this understanding before you get misled somewhere. But also, being a trainer is not easy on one's wallet. I got lucky and got a job that allows me to travel across the world, but not all researchers and scientists who work for a lab will leave their lab, let alone their region. Buuuut, it's easy to get a sponsorship from becoming a gym trainer. Even if you leave, all you have to do is compete in some tournaments as you come across them and you'll get paid for your efforts. Don't go around sponsoring your gym leader or the sponsorship people themselves, and you won't get anything." She shrugged.

"It's not like we expect you to stay working at one place for long anyway, and more than a handful of trainers would understand this wanderlust. Get on good terms with them, and they may even help you." She smiled, wanting Theo to go out there and not rely on her wallet, as Esther thought earlier.

After a sigh, she looked at the time. Her face scrunched briefly before relaxing it. "Ah, I need to work on my Mienshao, Chikorita, and my Tauros, as it's getting late. If you two need anything I'll be around the Pokemon Center." With a smile, she moved to get up, her Sceptile making a guttural croak as he leaned down for Naka to sit on. She had carried her Chikorita with her, letting him sit in front of her. "Need anything before I go?" She asked, wanting to make sure she wasn't leaving without granting some sort of closure from their questions from those two.

Andy didn't seem too confident when Reggie spoke to him last, but being dragged by Reina, he decided to put some trust in him. Chuckling at Reina's use of southern slang and twang, he sat beside Reina - watching amusingly as her Ivysaur and Clefairy got off the chair. What Reggie realized was how... big the stage was. Odd.

It was then as - people began to bring out their star Pokemon - they did a mini performance one would see in a contest's appeal stage. Pageants in Unova were more focused on the health and looks of a Pokemon. He was honestly surprised that pageants here allowed moves. A hybrid? Was it a thing in the regions where contests were founded?

Now that he thought about it, the ones in Unova certainly weren't as exciting as the one shown here, but Unova also had the Musical, which was like a dancing pageant. Maybe because contests were much more interesting, pageants here had to evolve to incorporate some of their mechanics to gain more money? Huh... Culture was weird.

As Andy and Tesla came up, Reggie waved with a smile. For a last-minute performance idea, what he saw was amazing. The fluff looked amazing, and using the dispersed wool as rods of to direct lightning to create beautiful patterns in the air was amazing. Dare he say it, electrifying!

Not only was it cool, Tesla was an adorable ball of rubbery pink and fluffy wool onstage. He was extremely photogenic it seemed. When it was over, Reggie found himself clapping exuberantly along with some of the crowd. He had a huge smile, so happy that Andy did so well. He was sure that Andy will win. If not first, then second place.

There were still a couple more competitors, but once they were over, all competitors and their Pokemon would be made to stand on the stage while the judges deliberate and give their prizes to the winner. Reggie didn't know if they would give consolation prizes to second and third place, or to anyone else here, but considering this pageant was more to have fun, maybe everyone gets a consolation prize.

He just hoped that Andy won, blue eyes glinting with apprehension.

It’s getting late…? Esther glanced her pokétch. It’s not even noon…

Lips curled with the flavor of disdain; but Esther tactfully decided against exposing Naka. Their conversation had exhausted itself. That was okay.
    “No questions sensei~”

”You’ve got my number so don’t be strangers~”

With a twiddle of her fingers Esther swiveled about and removed herself from the table. She didn’t mind some free time; it would simply let her get back to planning move combinations for her Pokémon. Who had she been at, Halay? Actually—I need to write this down

Esther paused abruptly; brows furrowed. No, even before that…aren’t I broke?

She still had a few hours before her brother arrived. It was time to beat up some kids for lunch money…

Theo sat back in silence and listened as the two answered his question, giving their words thought. What they said made sense, and from his own experiences he knew first hand how expensive traveling could be. Food, lodging, supplies, safety. All of it were things he had to consider. And as it currently stood, he didn't even know if he had enough cash to last through the week. The both of them seemed to be offering the same advice: Get a job to pay for whatever it is he wants to do next. Becoming a gym trainer could be either a temporary gig or it could lead to a potential sponsorship, maybe even multiple. Wait, was that even legal? He looked up to the two women, giving them a nod. "I think you've given me the best course of action. I'll...well, try....to get a job at the local gym as a gym trainer. Stick around for a bit. Make some money, learn the lay of the land. Maybe even challenge the gym leader when I feel more comfortable with...everything. Because, I do love to travel. It's the only lifestyle I've known. But not that high society, big money type of traveling. More the down in the trenches, covered in dirt kind. This one time, we were trying to get a Pelorovis skull out of Buya, and let me tell you. We" he stopped when he realized he had started to rant, the smile that had formed on his face slowly fading. "Right. Off topic. Sorry. I'm trying to work on that. Where was I?" he sat back and thought back on their conversation, remembering just a few seconds later. "Right. Job. Gym trainer. I should probably get on that." Without the job, he wouldn't be able to afford a place to stay or food for himself and his pokemon. The lodging he didn't mind. He enjoyed sleeping outside, under the stars. But he wouldn't be of use to anyone if he didn't eat.

"Thanks again, both of you. For the suggestions. For...everything, really. I'd probably be screwed if I hadn't met yall. So, thanks." He looked first to Esther when she stood, nodding when she told them not to be strangers. "You too, yeah?" He felt she was another reason he needed to get stronger. She had been the first person he had battled with his own pokemon. And though he lost, he owed it to her for showing him where he stood and how much farther he could potentially strive for. And that was just the start. Naka had likely been at this for years. He needed to catch up to Esther's level before he even thought about challenging his current sponsor. He nodded to Naka's question, asking "Yeah. Just one thing. Could you point me in the direction of the gym? Sooner I go about getting a job the better off my pokemon are going to be."

Naka knew what time it was, but honestly getting to know her three Pokemon - especially one who seemed unwilling to cooperate and trust her - was a task. Plus, she didn't know if any of them had stipulations or desires that needed to be met before she went about training with them.

Plus, with all this emotional runaround her poor aura was doing, she felt so exhausted from just the morning, and she didn't sleep that well last night because of all the Water-Types surrounding the fucking boat-

She needed to calm down. It's normal to be frustrated, but she can't show that to her friends when she's just leaving. This was an easy feat as Esther playfully called her sensei, making her chuckle and feel better. Her attention went to Theo, who had rambled. Pelorovis skull? Buya?

She didn't know what those were, but she wanted to see - knowing that he was isekai'd here unceremoniously by psychic floating letters - if this skull was analogous to her world at all. "You should draw me what this skull looks like." She smiled, clearly excited to see what his world was like.

She nodded at Theo's thank you and Esther's comment about not being strangers, chuckling as she watched her leave, her Chikorita trilling in farewell.

Returning back to Theo, she hummed at his question. "Follow me."

She had her Sceptile walk her outside, and she pointed to a building off in the distance. The building was large, semi-spherical, and had an orange and brown sturdy roofing. Theo could accurately compare this to some sort of indoor sports/water park building in his world, which were known to be just as big.

"That is the Gym. They will also have a half-Pokeball symbol above their front doors. All Johto gyms look like this, and they have to be tall and wide to accompany not only the battlefield and bleachers inside, but also the training rooms, the cafeteria, and lodging of their gym trainers. They also have a plot of land nearby to house the gym's Pokemon. Depending on what type the gym specializes in, you might find other implements, as well."

She looked back at Theo, smiling. "The Steel-Type Gym Leader, Jasmine, is there. She's a responsible sweetheart. If you don't have any Steel-Types on you, she'll likely rent you or even give you one. Once you become a gym trainer, the training rooms should become open to you and the rest of your non-Steel-Types. If you have any questions, I'm sure she wouldn't mind answering them."

Honestly, it's been a while since she's seen Jasmine - not like Naka had ever met her in person. However, everywhere she went, they always spoke of how sweet and helpful and hardworking she was. Okay, maybe that last one was a maybe, but she was sure Jasmine would be more than happy to give Theo a helping hand.

"If that'll be all, I have to get going. Good luck." With some apprehensive nerves, she let her Sceptile take her back around the Pokemon Center towards the battlefield she had watched Esther and Theo spar in.

She would just have to wait and see what would happen now.

July 25th

Training right after she left Theo and Esther was interesting. Not only was Naka trying to understand her three new Pokémon - and managed to get the Tauros to trust in her slightly - but her Mienshao refused to train if she didn’t get to participate in some battle against a tough opponent.

Naka went online, looking for something that would help. She was glad that, throughout the past couple of weeks, she had been changing around her Pokémon’s moves. While searching through the Battle Search App, Naka noticed a profile to fight a person called ‘Gym Leader Nathan’. By the looks of him, he seemed to be some sort of Norman super fan. He even got the short haircut and the tuft of hair going down his forehead, wearing getas without socks, wearing sweats, and a jacket over a white t-shirt. The only difference was that the jacket was fully open and navy blue in color, his hair was a dark brown, and his eyes were a hazel color. She could also tell he was playing up the serious look in the picture, his frown taut like he was trying to force himself not to smile. And there was a … cardboard cutout of Norman as the backdrop against some building and this Norman cutout had to be at least 30 feet tall…

And he called himself the “Normal-Type Gym Leader of Olivine City” and claimed he had a gym...

Fuck, this guy was cringe.

The address was the battlefield near the local battle club.

This… This is not a gym…

Giving this guy the benefit of the doubt, she began looking for his record at the local battle club. After looking through the videos to see what sort of Pokémon he had used in previous battles, she found only a few videos that had him as a battler. All three had him using a monotype team of Normal-Types, and he always had his Slaking and Ursaluna. She would have to prepare for those two.

Since there was a note on Nathan’s profile that said he was going to make an experimental strategy if that's alright with the challenger, Naka wasn’t able to find a strategy besides ‘Ursaluna big hit’ and ‘Slaking big hit #2’ from the videos. She went to the app and signed up for the fight in the next three days - signing up specifically for Nathan’s try at an experimental strategy, making her Mienshao happy. At least her Mienshao gave the guy the benefit of the doubt, but likely because she can’t read.

It was barely a moment later when she got a notification where she got her reserved spot on that day, as well as some details regarding the fight itself.

Unlimited switching on both sides allowed, full double battle.

Naka nodded slowly. “Ah… Interesting…”

Should she call her brother…? Nah, Mason likely would try to get her to lose…

Her thumbs were already putting in his phone number to call. Her thumb hovered over the call button. With some amount of effort to make the concrete in her thumb move, she pressed it and waited anxiously for Mason to call her back.

He answered the call way too quickly.

“Heyyyyy, sis~. Been a while since you called your amazing little bro, riiiiight~?”

Naka sighed. She can just tell he was upset that she hadn’t called him in so long. His intonation made her feel rather uncomfortable, like he was upset and trying to hide it behind some sort of manic lilt of his voice. Everything screamed that it wasn’t him anymore, but she powered through. “So… about full double battles-”

There was a sharp gasp. “Wait wait wait, big sis is asking me for double battles advice? Is the sky falling?!”

Naka couldn’t help the huff of amusement.

“But yeah, seriously, what strategy you going up against?”

“I have no idea. The guy - Nathan - just says it’s an experimental strategy. All I know is that he’ll likely have Ursaluna and Slaking. Nathan’s some Norman super fan who claims he owns a Normal-Type gym in Olivine but however true his claim is, he uses a Mono-Normal-Type team.”

There was some silence, and then a cackle of laughter. “Ohhh, you’re fucked!”

Naka groaned. “Just give me some simple doubles advice.”

After a bit of trying to calm down, Mason spoke again, voice colored with bits of his snickers. “Alrighty, so… You’ll need to have Protect on some of your Pokémon. Got any redirection? Ally Switch?”

Naka grimaced. “Uh… No. I do have Roar and Wide Guard though. And U-Turn and Flip Turn.”

There was a cough on the other end. Even his cough sounded very unimpressed. “Right… Okay, well, got Taunt?”

“Yeah.”

“Good, it’ll be a lifesaver. What’s the switch clause?”

“Unlimited.”

“Yeesh.” There was a deep sigh. “Okay, I don’t know what sort of strategy this guy’s cookin’, but you’re fucked. What Pokémon you using?”

Naka groaned again. His vote of confidence - or lack thereof - was very grating. “Sceptile, Aerodactyl, Hatterene, Swampert, Wishiwashi, Mienshao.”

Mason sighed. “Okay, so… You know your Pokémon better than I do, just make sure they have moves that hit multiple Pokémon, heal themselves and each other, set up hazards, all that good stuff. Oh, and if you have a Mienshao, they may know Feint. Really helpful. And keep that Mienshao in the fight, don’t let them faint. Since you are up against bulky, strong, and sorta slow Pokémon, there is a chance that you will go up against a stall set, a bulky sweep set, or… something else that would capitalize on their slowish speed. But those two Pokémon aren’t very slow, especially not Slaking. Oh, you will have to be careful about who would be paired with Slaking to get rid of Truant. You’d have to think about moves like Skill Swap and Role Play.”

Naka hummed, nodding. “Thanks, Mason.” She took a deep breath. “By the way, how are you feeling?”

“Peachy, why?” Naka can hear the tension in his voice. She sighed.

“Just wanting to check up on you. That’s all.”

Mason huffed. “What, you’re asking me that now instead of before I give you the information? Is that some sort of reward for being a good li’l bro?”

Sensing his hostility, Naka panicked briefly. “No, no, I’m just-...” She sighed, voice quiet. “Sorry… Should’ve asked first…”

“Mhm. What, you’re afraid of your own brother? You made me…”

Silence. The tension could be cut by a knife with how thick it was.

“So… That’s how it is… You really don’t like this ‘new me’, huh?”

Naka kept her eyes closed, even as her Sceptile neared her and nuzzled her shoulder. “I’m just worried… You’re a complete 180 than you were before, and while I want to accept this new you, it’s difficult-”

Difficult? Difficult how? That I’m not the sweet little baby brother you adored and coddled? That I’m not as weak as I was before, that I don’t need your protection anymore, and now I can actually scare the likes of you - the Guardian Researcher?” He mocked, spitting his vile disappointment at her.

There was silence as Naka just took the venom. After a few moments, Naka spoke up. “But, you hurt people now.”

There was another sigh, his tone now vulnerable. “Look, sis. When I technically ‘died’ that day, I felt things I wish I never felt in my entire life. Did that shape me? Yeah, it did. But after you failed to save me that day, I wasn’t going to just roll over and be the cute docile little kid you loved so much after that. No way. I have to rely on myself and my Pokémon, I have to be someone people fear, I have to make a name for myself, and if I have to step on people on my way there and make others think I’m a piece of shit, so be it. I would rather be that than be whatever the hell you tried to mold me into.”

Finally, the answer that Naka had been needing for so many years. The ‘why’ for Mason’s changed behavior, and it had started way earlier than she thought. Grief and regret wracked her mind. Was there a way for Mason to give grace for her misled, childish, naive mind?

She gave a soft hum, feeling like it was easier to accept him now, or at least tolerate his new self a bit better. “I… understand.” She knew Mason could hear the slight switch in the sound of her voice, that she was softly smirking.

There was some silence, and his words fell out like he was surprised, soft. “... you do?”

“Yeah. All this time, I thought you were possessed by a Pokémon or something.” To think this was all her…

There was an uncomfortable chuckle shared between the both of them, but Naka can feel the tension easing, and yet the weight in her heart became heavier.

“Well, maybe it would have made you feel a bit better if I were. But I’m not, unfortunately for you. You’ll just have to deal with this new evolution of myself that you made.” There was a beat of silence, the knife twisting in Naka’s heart as she heard his mock tone speckled with arrogance. “You think you can handle that gym?”

Naka nodded, forgetting she was on the phone. “Y-yeah… I think so.”

“Good. Just don’t go crying to me when you fail, yeah? You’re a grown woman, you can handle a little defeat.” His tone sounded sour, and yet Naka could tell he was smirking. Or at least, grimacing. She never let him experience defeat… When it happened seldomly, she was there to coddle him.

She never realized just how much of a perfectionist she was back then - and how much she ruined Mason’s childhood through her attempt at trying to be the perfect big sister. Instead, she was her bastion against what he should have experienced as a kid, afraid he’d go through the pain that she went through… Her parents were right, and yet she hid most of her treatment of him when they weren’t around, which was often.

Naka shook her head. “Yeah, okay, Mason. Bye, thank you.”

“You’re welcome, sis. Call me after your match. I appreciate you calling me for advice, you have no idea how good that felt. Talk to ya later.”

She ended the call and she let out a deep sigh. Her hands trembled minutely. Her mind spiraled. All of that time trying to protect Mason when he should’ve been going out there and experiencing the world… She felt horrible… Of course, she knew now - looking back on her actions at her attempt at being the ‘responsible big sister’ - that she had stunted his growth, but she hadn’t realized it had culminated into his changed behavior from that one catalyzing event…

Her Chikorita looked up at his trainer with some concern. Naka smiled, petting the Chikorita’s head. “Yeah, I’m fine. Let’s go train Minnie, yeah?”

With a trill, the Chikorita bounded for her Fighting-Type, ready to start help with training.

July 28th

The location was set at the local battle club, which was easy to get to. The battle club looked iconic, and it was during lunch. People were leaving to go eat, which was a good time to fight without many visitors.

She wondered if this was a scam. Her Sceptile looked around in confusion, while the Mienshao by her side - while trying to remain aloof - radiated a feeling of accomplishment. At least she seemed to be happy with the arrangement. Her Tauros walked alongside her, her Pichu and Chikorita resting on the Tauros’s back. While the Tauros seemed nice with her two Pokémon, he still eyed his new trainer warily. So, she spoke to her Sceptile. “Yeah, it’s not really what I was expecting either…” Naka muttered, walking further into the plots.

Gym Leader, my ass…

She finally made it to the designated plot - which weren’t that many plots to begin with - and found the strange guy from the photo standing there. Arms crossed, legs spread shoulder width apart, serious look on his face. If she couldn’t see his chest breathing in or the struggle on his face to keep from smiling, she’d think he was a cardboard cutout.

“You Nathan?” She asked.

“You Naka?” The man asked without nodding. Cautiously, Naka nodded.

The serious frown broke into a smile. “Perfect!” He muttered something as he pumped his fist, lips barely moving. Unfortunately, he was a bit too audible for Naka. “My first battle with a foreigner…!”

“Huh?”

“Anyway,” he acted as if he had said nothing, but Naka wasn’t that stupid. Nathan saw that Naka was standing at the ready on the other side of the field, so he launched into battle. ”Experimental strategy! Let’s go!”

Without missing a beat, he threw his two Pokeballs, releasing his Slaking and Noctowl. The suddenness of the fight prevented her from noticing a nearby Rotom filming the battle.

That was probably the Skill Swap user to be careful of.

Not wanting them to capitalize on that nor use the two Pokémon he can see yet, she sent out her Aerodactyl and Wishiwashi as she sent her Tauros to the sidelines, where he trotted to and stood there to watch the fight. The Wishiwashi Schooling Ability activated and Iwa became bigger as glowing manifestations of fish swarmed her and made her larger. Naka felt her determination and felt more confident from feeling Iwa’s trust in her. Leftovers hung on the inside of her cheek. Meanwhile, her Aerodactyl screeched, his feet wearing Heavy-Duty Boots.

An off-white band with purple stripes, and red then purple chevrons on either side of a red circle was wrapped around the Slaking’s head, while the Noctowl had a red sash that gradually became yellow on both ends around its waist.

While Slaking always had Truant, she squinted at the Noctowl to identify the ability. The eyes did not have a protective film, but some sort of other lens to it. She didn’t know if it was a different kind of protective film that she had seen in Pokémon with Keen Eye, or if it was Tinted Lens.

Her Aerodactyl was faster, so as Nathan was about to take in breath for his command, she sent her own command. “Aero, Taunt. Iwa, Ice Beam!”

“Noctowl, Skill Swap. Slaking, Mega Kick!”

The Aerodactyl screeched at the Noctowl, making it angry. So angry, it ignored the command to swap abilities with Slaking, even as it was hit by the beam of ice. It squawked, but managed to keep flying without hitting the ground. However, while the Noctowl still looked energized to fight, the Focus Sash’s glow dimmed. It can’t keep the Noctowl from fainting now.

Meanwhile, Slaking’s leg glowed brightly with white energy, he rushed in to kick at the Aerodactyl, but missed as the Aerodactyl barely had to fly up to avoid the hit. The Slaking slid across the ground in a three-point stance, glaring at the flying fossil. Only for Truant to activate and he zoned out.

Man, her brother was right. That Taunt really came in handy.

“Ice Beam again. Aero, Stealth Rock!”

“Noctowl, Air Slash that fish!”

Aero body glowed with a stony brown as he pulled rocks from the ground and sent them flying up, leaving craters in the battlefield while the rocks turned invisible - hovering ominously over the opponent’s side of the field.

Naka was really starting to regret not using this strategy during Candice’s gym fight.

The Noctowl blew a sharp gust of wind towards the amalgamation of fish with its glowing sky blue wings. However, while the attack landed, it did not flinch, allowing the Wishiwashi to fire another beam of ice at the enraged Noctowl, knocking it out.

The man returned his Noctowl, huffing as he threw out his next Pokémon - a Farigiraf, and she can see a strange spray-like device on the inside of the sentient hood’s mouth. The stones surged towards the giraffe, pummeling it before rising back up to the sky.

“Slaking, attack!”

“Iwa, Protect! Aero, Taunt!”

Due to Choice Band, the Slaking went to use Mega Kick again, this time on the Wishiwashi. The Mega Kick finally landed, but the green barrier appeared before he could land a hit. He was forced back and slid on the ground to a stop, only to zone out again due to Truant. Meanwhile, the Aerodactyl screeched at the Farigiraf, preventing the Farigiraf from thinking straight.

“Argh… Farigiraf, Psychic Noise on the fish!”

“Aero, return! Iwa, Ice Beam the Slaking!”

As Naka returned her Aerodactyl to send out her next Pokémon, the Farigiraf let out a strange eerie noise accompanied by pulsating waves of psychic energy. It hit the Wishiwashi, preventing her from healing with her Leftovers for two rounds. Meanwhile, the Ice Beam hit the zoning out Slaking. Naka could tell it would need a bit more damage than that.

She sent out her next Pokémon, her Swampert. Mudster roared, a strange ochre band twisted around his wrist. He also radiated determination like Iwa, which made Naka even more confident.

The Slaking awoke, ready to fight.

“Farigiraf, Psychic Noise! Slaking, get the fish!”

“Iwa, Protect! Swampert, Hammer Arm!”

Iwa covered herself in a green barrier, protecting herself from the strange, pulsating, noisy energy and the next super-powered kick.

Meanwhile, the Swampert slammed his orange arm onto the Slaking’s back as he skidded back from the Protect, roaring out as he felt his legs weaken. The recoil of the attack left the Swampert panting, slower.

Unfortunately for the Slaking, he zoned out again.

The Farigiraf got back to its senses, letting Nathan ease up. “Farigiraf, Reflect.”

“Swampert, Flip Turn! Iwa, Aqua Ring!”

While the Farigiraf channeled their energy to cover itself and its ally in psychic energy to ease the damage of physical attacks, it didn’t stop the Slaking’s defeat. The Swampert cloaked himself in water, slamming against the zoning out Slaking and switching out to the Aerodactyl. Meanwhile, the Wishiwashi - now unburdened by the Psychic Noise’s healing prevention - created a ring of water around herself.

With a click of his tongue, Nathan returned his Slaking and sent out his Snorlax. The fat bear yawned. grunted as the Stealth Rock slammed into it, and then got into a battle stance. Honestly, the fact that these things can still look intimidating was a feat.

“Farigiraf, Trick Room! Snorlax, Belly Drum!”

“Aero, Taunt! Iwa, Tearful Look on Snorlax!”

The Aerodactyl was first, preventing the Farigiraf from pulling off the Trick Room once again. Meanwhile, the Snorlax slammed its big belly and then ate its Sitrus Berry. The massive attack boost was given a marginal decrease in power from the Tearful Look.

“Farigiraf, Psychic Noise on the fish! Snorlax, Recycle!”

“Aero, Taunt the Snorlax! Iwa, Waterfall the Snorlax!”

The Aerodactyl screeched and taunted the Snorlax, preventing it from reacquiring its berry. Naka knew she was playing with fire here. While the Psychic Noise did hit Iwa, Iwa did manage to cover herself in water and hit the Snorlax. However, she had become her small fish form and wasn’t able to do much to the beef-cake that was Snorlax.

She couldn’t heal for a moment, and was stuck in her small fry form as she stared up at the Snorlax with fear. Naka can feel her fear, so her immediate thought was to protect her.

“Finish off that fish with Heavy Slam and Hyper Voice!”

“Iwa, Protect! Aero, Stone Edge the Farigiraf!”

The Farigiraf trotted to be beside the Snorlax and let loose a harsh noise while the bear’s body glowed with steel energy and slammed down on the green barrier. The attacks bounced off, but the Wishiwashi was pushing herself pretty well.

“You’re doing good, Iwa, almost there!” She called out amidst the sharp stones flying towards the Farigiraf, damaging it. Reflect dispersed and Iwa was able to heal again.

“Aero, Taunt the Farigiraf.”

“Psychic Noise that Aerodactyl! Snorlax, Heavy Slam the Aerodactyl!”

The Aerodactyl moved first, taunting the Farigiraf as the Psychic Noise hit. However, that Heavy Slam was a bigger issue.

“Iwa, Tearful Look!” That look as the Snorlax ran past the fish brought down his attack again. He still slammed into the Aerodactyl, sending Aero back and to the floor.

Just as the Leftovers stuck to her cheek and the Aqua Ring healed her, she grew her full size again with Schooling.

Naka returned her Aerodactyl and sent out her Mienshao from beside her, a Life Orb hanging on a necklace. The Pokémon stood on one foot as she honed in on her enemies.

Now that the Snorlax wasn’t taunted anymore, Nathan breathed easier. “Farigiraf, Psychic Noise the Mienshao! Snorlax, Heavy Slam the Wishiwashi!”

“Iwa, Ice Beam! Minnie, Swords Dance!”

The Farigiraf attempted to bounce around Wishiwashi to attack the Mienshao, but was prevented as the Wishiwashi flopped over in front of the Farigiraf and fired a beam of ice as both special attacks hit the other Pokémon.

The Snorlax slammed into the fish with his steely body, the Wishiwashi reverting back to her solo form as she flopped pathetically across the ground. She felt her pain, grunting.

Naka returned Iwa to her Pokéball and sent out her next Pokémon, a Hatterene with a cloak over her body.

“Hattie, Light Screen.”

“Farigiraf, Hyper Voice. Snorlax, Yawn the Hatterene.”

“Minnie, Taunt the Snorlax.”

“Another Taunt???” Nathan was getting fed up with this. His Snorlax was unable to attack from the Taunts. Light filtered over Naka’s side of the field, preventing the Hyper Voice from knocking out her Pokémon.

“Hattie, Reflect. Minnie, Knock Off the Farigiraf.”

“Snorlax, Heavy Slam the Hatterene! Farigiraf, Psychic Noise!”

However, Minnie was far too fast. As light fell on Naka’s Pokémon to lessen the damage from physical attacks, Minnie had already floored the Farigiraf with Knock Off before it could even use the move. The Snorlax slammed his body into the Hatterene, but the Reflect protected her from being knocked out completely. She whined, but shook her head as she grinned at the Snorlax.

The next Pokémon that was out was the Porygon2, holding a strange purple blob around its neck that Naka figured was an Eviolite. It copied Hatterene’s Magic Bounce with Trace, which was only going to make this more difficult. The Stealth Rock came down, slamming into the Porygon2.

“Minnie, Drain Punch the Porygon2!”

“Snorlax, Double-Edge the Hatterene! Porygon2, Protect!”

“Minnie, switch to Feint! Hattie, Protect!”

The Double-Edge bounced off, and Nathan was getting tired of these Protects, too. The Feint burst through Porgyon2’s shield, doing minimal damage but still there was damage when there should have been none.

“Minnie, now Drain Punch!”

“Snorlax, Double-Edge the Mienshao! Porygon2, Substitute!”

“Hattie, dive and Protect!”

The Hatterene was faster as she bounced between the Snorlax and Mienshao since Hatterene was so close to Snorlax prior, creating a green barrier to protect Mienshao. It succeeded this time, the Double-Edge hitting the Protect and bouncing off again.

Naka knew she couldn’t use Protect again.

The Substitute couldn’t have been made in time, and the Mienshao punched the Porygon2 with a glowing fist, sapping the Porygon2 of its strength. It fell to the floor, knocked out.

The next Pokémon came and she could feel the ground shake. That Ursaluna did not look happy, shrugging off the Stealth Rock that came down. It held a Flame Orb around its paw, but Naka knew Minnie was faster.

“Minnie, Knock Off! Hattie, Psychic the Snorlax!”

The Psychic blast hit the Snorlax, and due to its weakened state earlier, it fell. Meanwhile, the Mienshao kicked the Flame Orb out-of-bounds before the Flame Orb could actually burn it.

With a wrathful roar for its fallen teammate, the Ursaluna’s body cloaked in fairy energy as Nathan called out his attack as he returned his Snorlax. “Play Rough!”

The close proximity prevented Minnie from actually dodging. The Ursaluna slammed into her, sending her flying back and knocking her out as the Light Screen faded on her side.

Returning Minnie, Naka sent out her next Pokémon from beside her: Silenus. The Sceptile held a Big Root nestled within his tail.

“That Ursaluna is almost done! Hattie, Psychic! Silenus, Frenzy Plant!”

“Ursaluna, Heavy Slam the Hatterene!”

As the Ursaluna charged with steely energy, the psychic blast hit its face. Then, large thorny vines erupted from underneath the Ursaluna, slamming it down to the ground and causing dust to get everywhere.

After a bit of waiting, Naka saw that the Ursaluna had been defeated. She smiled happily, whooping as her Silenus ran back to get his petting. “You guys did it!”

Even her Tauros bellowed in triumph and ran back to Naka so the three Pokémon could congratulate their trainer. Maybe she wasn’t so bad…

“Urgh… Couldn’t even use my strategy either…”

Oh… right, he was trying that?

“Oh, hey, I know it’s a bad time, but where even is your gym? You claim to have one in your profile.”

“You have the gall to ask me after you beat me?! Hmph, well… I’m getting a gym, but the pending process is… tentative.”

“The fuck does that even mean…? Whatever…” She sighed, shaking her head. “Thanks for the fight. Huh?” Her eyes caught sight of something floating off to the side. A camera, filming the entire thing. She felt a weird sense of dread, but hopefully it would just be good for her.

She watched as the Norman fanboy stalked his way into the battle club, mumbling about the abuse of ‘Taunt’ and ‘Protect’, even though these were viable strategies in a Double battle.

Naka chuckled, shaking her head as she left the battle club’s property. She went to her phone to call for her brother to tell him the news. He seemed to be eagerly awaiting the phone call because he picked up right away.

“Helllooooo~?”

“Yes, I won.”

“Seeeeee~? Taunt and Protect are fucking lifesavers.”

“They sure were.”

The silence after Mason’s chuckle made everything feel awkward. Of course, Mason would start asking questions that would inevitably lead to Naka wanting to pull her hair out.

“So, how’s Chu?”

“Oh, she’s doing good.”

“She still a Pichu?”

Naka grimaced. “Yes…”

“Do you wanna know why?”

Naka stared blankly ahead, silent before asking. “What, you got some insight about my Pokémon?”

“Well yeah? Chu was with us the entire time when we were in Hoenn. Don’t forget that she watched you coddle the fuck outta me, and then how did you react when I changed?”

Naka’s face fell. “Wait… She didn’t want to evolve because… She’s afraid I’d be scared of her or don’t want her anymore?” She looked at her Pichu as she played with the Chikorita, unsure if her Pichu heard any of this.

“Bingo~.”

Naka groaned, rubbing her temple. “Great, okay.”

“Have you been coddling her recently?”

“I haven’t since our trip in Hoenn ended. I think she’s starting to realize that I’m trying not to coddle her too much too, because she’s been acting out. It’s also why I don’t have her with me all the time either.”

“Hmmmmm, you two should talk it out~. Anyway, you’re welcome for the unwarranted advice, bye-bye~!”

Naka groaned, shoving her phone into her pocket. But… He was right, as much as she hated to admit.

But, she didn’t want to have another Mason-situation on her hands, especially not with her very first Pokémon. So, she took a trip to the Pokémon Center to heal her Pokémon and talk to her Pichu.

The Mareep Festival... What an adorable place to be.

As Naka went about studying the Sanguine Swarm, she went south through Johto. She wanted to make sure that it was all localized to the north of Johto, and it indeed it was. But now that she was in Mariko Village - and now that she has to wait for her data to come back - she decided to enjoy her time here.

She saw the many events on the billboard as she bought a wristband for entry and participation in the Static Shock Tournament. Her Pichu seemed conflicted, as she held onto the blonde fohawk of Naka's hair with clammy fists.

Naka walked in, humming as she thought about what to do here. There's the Wooloo Toss, which sounded fun but she wasn't too fussed on winning the prize. Round 'em Herding Competition (as the actual name was way too long) also sounded fun, but again she wasn't fussed on winning - but that Electroweb TR was certainly something to shoot for. The Lamb Roast she won't be competing in, but like hell she was going to miss out on eating some good lamb. Shear Sheer Sharing wasn't interesting, and she didn't want to stay too long if she went there or to feed sheep. She also wasn't really interested in the Beauty Pageant.

That really only left three events, with Naka choosing to do the Static Shock Tournament, and the two prizes - Thunder Stone and the three Electric Gems were definitely something to shoot for. Chu knew that she was the only Electric-Type Naka owned, so nerves were definitely settling in.

They had trained on their way to Mariko Village, and so while Chu wasn't as rusty as she would be normally, it still terrified her. What if she evolved and couldn't stop it? Yeah, Naka had already spoke to her about this before, but it's been almost two weeks. Would she change her mind?

But then again... Naka hadn't been coddling her like she would normally. Now that Chu thought about it, Naka hadn't done so in so long... Sometimes, Naka would treat her like a child, but more so with affectionate and gentle actions. But Chu had realized that these were growing infrequent. Did Naka hate her?

Maybe Naka did want her to change...

Sensing her little mouse's predicament, Naka picked up her Pichu as they made their way to the Static Shock Tournament, cradling the little thing in her arms. "Chu, I know you're worried. You're thinking I'll hate you if you evolve. But, I don't want to keep stunting your growth, especially out of something selfish on my part. I want to see you grow and change. And maybe, while I'm not hoping to win, these battles will show you that you are definitely ready to change. Besides, you'll always be my Chu, no matter what form you take or how different you act." She smiled, petting her electric mouse's head.

The Pichu, while still worried, eased up a little.

Naka stared at the stadium, sighing. Her camouflage jacket was open, showing off her green tank top, and her reinforced black backpack sat against her back. She looked like she just came from doing wildlife recon - which was actually exactly what she was doing. Her camouflage jacket had a few holes all over the arms, but it was hard to see unless someone was close. It's been nineteen days since her upper arm was fractured by the Mienfoo's kick, so it was now just put in a rigid cast and compressed, allowing her to use her arm now with limited capacity. Her forearm muscle has a tight band around it, preventing her from lifting or grabbing something that's too heavy to keep herself from stressing out her upper arm. Some of her old wounds from that day in the Safari Zone have healed into scars, joining the long scar down her cheek and neck.

Naka was also participating in the tournament as it's been many years since her Pichu participated in anything with an audience due to the origin of Naka's fear. But, she was sure her Pichu wouldn't want to let her down, nor was she going to let this fear take hold of her any longer.

It was time to fight the roots of the problem, even if it made Naka gut clench something awful.
