history.

Bet's original family was ideal. His human was a three year old boy called Ben, who he loved and protected dearly. Bet has little memory of the details of Ben's face however he can remember the warmth and happiness he experienced in the child's presence. Although, Bet was rather problematic for the parents of Ben. He grew too strong to take on walks and pulled on his lead very hard, actually dislocating the arm of the mother. This was only due to excitement and little training, with a heavy heart, at 13 months old, Bet had been abandoned in a re-homing centre.

When Bet was put up for adoption, he was snatched away very fast by a lovely couple. As soon as he left the building, Bet ran as fast as he could, confused and scared, searching for his best friend Ben. Days passed since he was missing Bet was found by a lead member of a dog fighting group. The young dog was mainly used as bait for the aggressive to toy with. Bet didn't understand why they were so angry, often cowering in fright and rolling over in submission at the slightest growl. The Bull Terrier's nature was not to fight, but to love and play, making him a great candidate for baiting. Bet's nose is scraped with heavy scarring and despite his humorous take on life, his triangle eyes tell sadness and trauma. For the two year ordeal, Bet grew weak and was discarded: his mouth was sellotaped together and he was dumped in the village near the Facility. Bet was quickly sold to white-coats and is currently being used for "temperament testing".

Despite his horrific beginnings, Bet tried his best to keep his chin high and go through with life as it comes, hoping to one day find a comforting home, like the stories Wisdom used to tell when he was scared.

Temperament testing. The dog will be placed under extreme stress and if they react negatively, they will be sedated with human sedatives. This is usually a trail run over a constant period of time, causing damage to the liver and kidney function.

Name
Lambert.

Proposed Role
Control.

Experiment ID
#507.

Course
Medical Testing / Prosthetics.

Age
4 years old.

Gender
Male.

Breed
German Shorthaired Pointer x English Setter.

Personality

Lambert is a calm, collected, even tempered canine with a huge heart. He has a strong sense of justice and morality, but every dog has their flaws and at times he can be blinded by his own ideals. The pale Pointer prefers compromise over violence and will always avoid getting physical if a reasonable solution can be found instead. With that said, he’s not exactly a pacifist either and will fight if he deems it necessary.

Loyal and courageous, he will always do his best to protect those around him. Lambert is a social dog who enjoys spending his time in the company of others. Every now and then he may wander off on his own to think, but more often than not Lambert isn't a canine looking for solitude. He is an affectionate and warm individual. Honest to his core, but still tactful enough not to be crass. He is optimistic and hopeful, always seeing the bright side of any given situation.

Despite the cruelty experienced at the hands of the white-coats he believes in the kindness of human, remembering the love of his first owner and clinging to the memories.

History
TW:
Death by car accident.

Lambert's story wasn’t anything too out of the ordinary in his younger years. He was born into an accidental litter, one of three and the only male, and came out a rather unusual color to boot. Once he reached his third month of life he was given to a young lady who planned on training him to be her service animal despite being an unusual breed for it. He formed a very powerful bond with the woman and they were inseparable.

His life was turned upside down when his owner was killed in a car accident. He’d been in the back seat and was tossed from the car, but miraculously survived with only a few scraps and two broken rib bones. His master was killed on impact. He stayed by her side as any loyal companion would, crawling back over to the ruined vehicle until first responders arrived and Lambert was taken in by his owner’s sister once she reached the scene.

While she attempted to make him feel at home it wasn’t quite the same, and she ended up rehoming him to man looking for a hunting hound. Of course, Lambert had little training in that area, but he did his best to make his new owner happy. Ultimately though, the poor chap ended up in a shelter before long where he was picked up by the pharmaceutical company.

Extra
Tw:
amputation.

Lambert badly damaged his front right leg in the accident and it was amputated at the elbow, making him a perfect candidate for prosthetic testing. His back left paw was also surgically removed in the laboratory to test hind paw prosthetics as was his left eye which was replaced, similarly, with a realistic prosthetic. Lambert was frequently used to test things such as stents, pacemakers, and other medical devices meant for humans as well as medical drug testing.

NAME.
Milo.

PROPOSED ROLE.
Naivety.

EXPERIMENT ID.
#707.

COURSE.
Neurological Effects of Pharmaceuticals.

AGE.
Five Months Old.

GENDER.
Female.

BREED.
GSD Mix.

APPEARANCE.
Milo isn’t much at the moment. She holds no proportional aspects to her young body, having paws too big for her, with legs too long, and fur too plentiful. Her fur is jet black — not counting the splashes of white on her paws — and wild, bundling around her face like a human’s winter coat. Her ears are larger than life and flop when she walks, even the tips when she perks them.

She’s still losing her puppy pudginess. Her tail has a slight bend to it, as if subjected to some accident just past the threshold of her young memory.

PERSONALITY.
Milo doesn't know what's going on, only that they're trapped in a cage. They heard mentions of a place called a shelter or a pound, so maybe that’s where they are? That’s where the older dogs said she’d go. Despite the neurological trauma they are putting her through, Milo doesn't seem to understand what is going on. Milo doesn’t quite have the knowledge to know when they’re being mistreated, and thus will do things to make the white-coats happy. Anything to receive that soft word that means they did well.

Milo doesn’t have many role models. Not good ones. She’s impressionable and observant, following what those around her do. It’s how she knew what to do for her own little visits with the white-coats. She still greets them like they are her masters, not understanding why others don’t give them the same treatment. They feed her, after all. Isn't that what they’re supposed to?

Though, watching those around her, she’s begun to wonder what is actually going on. Even though it might be buried beneath wanting to believe all is well and that they’re a good dog. She’s optimistic and looks towards happy thoughts like they’re her sunlight. She hopes that one day she’ll be able to meet her new, forever masters, whenever she passes these tests the white-coats put her through. That’s her way out. Or so she thinks.

Though Milo acts honest, a liar can spring from her at any moment. A hint of compulsive lying mingles in with her psyche, and it stays, lingering beneath the surface, ready to pop out at any time. Another thing waiting to pop out at any time is her developing tourettes. She holds a bit of shame around this, growing sheepish whenever she tics, as though she’d tinkled herself.

HISTORY.
Milo’s history is rather short, due to her age. She was an unintentional birth. Her parent’s masters had been waiting to get their female fixed, but before that could happen, their male got loose, and months later Milo and her siblings were yipping in open air and begging for sustenance.

Her would-be masters weren’t rich, or even that well off. They had to get rid of the puppies as soon as possible, and the easiest way was to put out fliers, ads in the papers, and posts on craigslist. It took a while for her to be taken, and so by the time she was taken, she assumed it was to go to the pound.

Milo is now here, being used as a living experiment. New medications are being used on her, and they’re affecting her neurologically.

RELATIONSHIPS.

psyche

Once an excitable, energy-filled ball of fur, Posie’s sobering experiences over the last few years have forced her to mature into the calm, observant canine she is today. She has a gentle, subdued energy about her, an attitude which starkly contrasts the anger and desperation of the other animals in the facility, and she often goes unnoticed, falling into the background. Under her withdrawn exterior, however, Posie is hiding quick-wits and a keen mind. She’s highly perceptive, able to pick up on small details which often go unnoticed by others; pair this with high intelligence and a calm demeanour even under pressure, and you’ve got a recipe for a dog who can think herself out of almost every problem she encounters.

Her perceptiveness also extends to the acts of others - she’s particularly in tune with the emotions of other beings, and, though her inner puppy might have left her, one thing that’s definitely stayed with her from her earlier days is her altruism and need to help those around her. She’s kind to all and fiercely loyal to those who she comes to know as her friends. However, she often helps others at the expense of her own needs, and she has a tendency to bottle up her own emotions so she can stay useful for others. While she’s used to caring for herself for now, even the strongest can only internalise their feelings for so long before they bubble up to the surface and explode…

positives

Level-headed, intelligent, kind, perceptive

negatives

Subdued, emotionally repressed, reluctant to change, conflict avoidant

fears

Because of her past experiences, Posie’s biggest fear is abandonment - she’s scared that those she cares about will leave her, and it’s because of this that, though she’s kind to everyone, she’s very guarded when it comes to forming actual emotional attachments.

history

One of Mariposa's earliest memories is that of her sitting in a box under a Christmas tree, a pink bow tied neatly around her neck. When the cover of that box was lifted and she was raised up with gentle, small hands to stare into the face of a young girl with freckled skin, brilliant blue eyes, and a mess of curly golden hair, she knew she would come to love that face forever.

Mariposa was bought by a rich couple as a present for their eight-year-old daughter, Rose, a shy little girl who was scared of making friends and, with both of her parents working, was growing quite lonely. They thought a puppy would be the perfect solution to give her some company, and the two connected the instant they met. Only a few seconds passed after Mariposa was set on the ground of her new home before she took off and began running through the hallways, her paws slipping on the marble floor and Rose following closely behind, squealing with delight and calling after her "'Posie, 'Posie!". Her parents had wanted to give the family dog the name 'Mariposa', but Rose had seemingly decided the name was too much of a mouthful. For the next few weeks, 'Posie' was the only thing that would be heard around the house, and Mariposa soon came to accept it as her name.

The next four years would be filled with long days spent playing in the park and cozy evenings cuddled up in Rose's bed as the girl made small braids in her fur and talked to her about what she was doing at school. The two grew up together, Posie watching with pride as the girl became confident, happier. She started having friends over - groups of loud, chatty girls who would put on music and dance around the living room while Posie would run around between their legs, barking excitedly. She pictured the rest of her life like this, spending every moment of it by Rose's side. Sadly, however, this was not to be.

When Rose turned twelve she became very ill. Posie began to notice it one day when they were playing and Rose suddenly became fatigued, sliding down to the ground and bringing her hands to her head, as if in pain. Posie thought she'd been too rough for the girl, and thought if she was more gentle from then on Rose would get better - but she only grew weaker and weaker. Sunny days spent outside turned into gloomy ones laying at the foot of Rose's bed, watching as her skin turned pale and her golden, curly hair began to fall out in clumps as she brushed it. Trips to the park turned into trips in the car, laying on Rose's lap on the way to a large, white building where she would have to wait for hours at a time for Rose to come back out. Rose became too weak to have the energy to braid Posie's fur and speak to her in the evenings like she used to, and instead went straight to sleep. She slept a lot those days. There eventually came a point where all Posie could do was stay beside her when she woke up in the night with nosebleeds or went to throw up.

One day they went on a trip to the strange white building and Rose didn't come back out. Her parents came back out and drove home in silence, and all the days following that were nothing but confusing. Things at the house went on as they usually did - the parents went to work in the mornings and didn't come back until evening. The gardeners and the cleaners showed up on the days they always did, sometimes stopping for a while to pet her, but it didn't fill the hole that Rose had left there. Posie sat waiting for something to change - waiting for her Rose to come back to her - but when things did change it wasn't for the better.

One evening Rose's parents came back home and Posie knew they had visited the white building - she could smell it on them. She ran up to the door excitedly, thinking they had gone there to get Rose back, but they walked in and closed the door immediately behind them, walking right past Posie without saying a word. They cried a lot that night, and many of the nights after that. Posie could hear them from Rose's room, where she still slept every single evening. A large group of people showed up to the house, but they were all dressed in black and carrying heavy, sad expressions on their faces. The air was thick with despair, and Posie thought it might suffocate her.

Rose's grieving parents wanted nothing to do with Posie - to them, all she was was an extension of their daughter and it was painful to even look at her. They decided they couldn't keep her around anymore, especially because they didn't have the time or energy for a dog, and, with Rose gone, there was nobody to look after her. She was packed up into the car and driven to the pound. For the first few days she waited for them to come back, but when somebody finally came to get her it wasn't Rose or her parents - it was the white-coats.

pain.

Posie's one true friend in the facility. Harley was put in the cage next to hers when she first arrived, guarded and aggressive, but Posie knew there was more to her. Over time, she was able to bring out Harley's kinder side, and found ways to calm the other dog down when she had episodes of panic or aggression. She truly cares for the other dog, and feels much safer when she's around her.

01.

appearance

height

harley stands at about twenty seven inches from the ground, which is on the larger side of the spectrum, but still maintaining average height.

weight

around seventy one pounds, which is at the lower side of the spectrum for average doberman weight. she’s a little bit on the slimmer side, though, but very lean, most of her body weight is sheer muscle.

fur c.

harley was born with a genetic condition called albinism, which causes her fur to be white. it’s not the typical norm for a doberman, but it makes her worth a lot of money.

eye c.

very pale blue, again caused by albinism. due to the lack of pigment, her eyes are very sensitive to sunlight or any type of light for that matter.

faceclaim

02.

psyche

as a dog who was brought up in the depths and roots of evil, a killing machine turned soft was born from the litter, harley has had a rough past and an even tougher future ahead of her. plagued by the effects of abuse, she is constantly feeling as if it was her fault. she’s a dog with a heavy baggage who just needs a loving hand to caress her.

she’s kind, but only if she knows you. she’s not fond of outsiders and though everything is subjective to change, the fear of change haunts her. she doesn’t like meeting new individuals and has a hard time trusting others, her guard only up halfway when she’s around others. harley is rather rough around the edges if you will, she’s harder to get along with and usually making snide remarks if anything that she says doesn’t go, which can seem disrespectful but it’s really just her controlling mechanism kicking in.

the only one who can really convince her that any other way but her way goes is that of cunning, whom she respects more than any other dog in the pack. when she feels frightened or angry, her go to has always been them and she will never stray from that truth.

positive

loyal, intelligent, street-wise, kind (to some), detail oriented, analytic, selfless.

negative

abrasive, angry, bull-headed, hard to please, untrusting.

fears

there isn’t much that she truly fears, looking death in the face can do that for you. however, she doesn’t have an irrational fear of change, and meeting new people as she doesn’t have any trust for anything new that comes her way.

03.

history.

the start of harley’s life begins in the arms of a local breeder, who bred doberman pinschers exclusively. at the sight of an albino doberman puppy, extremely valuable, the breeder took advantage of this and sold her for a higher price. thinking she was going to a loving home, the breeder handed her off to a man by the name of wesley. he was a well known boxer and it was to be assumed that he just needed a companion. it was sadly mistaken when she herself was thrown into a ring of her own.

the man that took her in was unbeknownst to the community, a dog fighter who had many other people constantly in his home. his most prized possession, and soon to be a killing machine, was a large, albino doberman with a mean streak. he would show her off to his fellow dog fighters, who would then bid thousands of dollars on her, and her master would not be nice if she didn’t win a fight. bloodied battle after bloodied battle, soon she was known as top dog in the ring. as she grew older, though, knowing that her killstreak would end and knowing that hearing the whimpering and whining of other dogs made her cringe, she made her escape one night. her master opened the crate for a few seconds, and in that moment of opportunity she bolted, knocking her master down and running out into the open. her master tried to clip her with a small white pistol he owned, but missed by a millimeter.

a dog who only fears the unknown and has never been touched by a loving hand before, she remained hiding throughout the city, a couple hot dogs thrown her way but never a fully satisfying meal. her main threats were the money hungry humans that were around her, and she always felt like she was on the run. never to be seen again by the men that wanted to keep her for their own gain.

one night, as she was scavenging the streets for any food that was available to her, a white van slowly followed her, creeping through the city unbeknownst to her. by the time she could realize anything, harley was quickly sedated with a tranquilizer gun, and soon after it hit her system, she fell into a deep sleep and the white coats were her next sight.

she prefers not to be mistaken for timid, though, as she might have had a rough beginning with humans, but she is more cautious than anything. she knows that not all humans are brutal, but that doesn’t mean she will let her guard down for one, either. she still feels anger brewing inside of her, as if one little thing could trigger her and set off like a loaded shotgun. her only safe haven is that of cunning, who is the first dog, the first thing, for that matter, to show true affection and warmth to her. a dog with a littered reputation and a horrific beginning, the older dog was more of a mentor to her, able to calm her down in her most bloodthirsty moments.

genetic testing / occular testing

for occular testing, the dog will be placed in a dark room with a flashlight shone in their eyes. if the dog flinches, it will be injected with a treatment with the domain ingredient being for human wet-macular degeneration. over an extended period of time, it can cause direct damage to the cornea of the iris.

for genetic testing, a blood sample is drawn from the dog every couple of hours to keep fresh samples to conclude what gene causes albinism and trying to find a cure.

Booker has long since lost his puppy energy, instead preferring a warm bed and a peaceful home—his home. He was, and still is to a degree, good-natured and loyal. He is patient with the humans and younger dogs. He suffers in silence, his pain marked by weariness.

Though leading a soft life, he has attained knowledge over the years, through direct experience or through the words of other dogs. The lessons, however, have become muddled over the years. His mind is not as sharp as it once was.

good. calm. understanding. honorable.

negatives

brittle. hesitant. guilt-ridden. easily discouraged.

fears

he was a bad dog, or his master returned, but he wasn't there.

03.

history

Booker was adopted as a puppy by an older man, around forty years or so, and lived a quaint, quiet, little New England smalltown life. He knew routine: daily walks, the coming and going of his master, a large backyard, and a warm fireplace. And he came to understand the seasons, the passage of time, his master aged as did himself. They were happy for a long time. Then his master didn't come home one night, did not follow the routine, Booker waited by the front door regardless.

When the neighbor and estate agent found him, he was taken to the shelter.
