The Die Is Cast
Kamakura, Japan
The town of Kamakura was bustling just as it usually was on Sundays. Today was made even more notable as couples went around the streets of Komachi-dori celebrating Valentine’s. The temple, the beach, everywhere you looked it was a gaggle of couples with the occasional larger group of friends enjoying their day trips as the hoards started to pile in from the Tokyo lines.
You’d been given instructions to make your way down to Meigetsuin Temple at 2pm sharp. Why? SEES chose a well-known temple for a cover, which seemed counterintuitive but there was no time to question why this might be. If there was one thing Kamakura had plenty of, it was temples. Tomomi had given careful instructions on how to reach the temple. Once they arrived they were to mention that they were with “she who won Salamis.”
Until then. Their housing had been set, their humble stipends loaded. There was still a good two hours to kill as the clock struck noon. The little cafes and restaurants seemed to be doing great as people walked in and out. All seven of the major temples were busy, as always. The town had 84 in total so it was no wonder that was the biggest hit of the town. The beach was a popular destination but the chill of the end of winter kept many from going in the water. The museum of literature seemed to be perfectly off the beaten path for anyone wishing to get some air from the crowds.
All in all it was anything but what one would expect of “rapidly increasing threat probability” that SEES had claimed the town had. Just what had they seen in it?

- Yuigahama Beach
The beach was a picturesque image of stillness. Despite the cooler weather still some braved the ocean waves looking every bit a loon as they did. The people were few and in between compared to the rest of the town but there were still spread out groups of visitors playing to their heart’s content. The slow lapping of the waves on the sandbar was as peaceful as could be. To the north where the beach ended into a mess of rocky craigs there was a clear place to jump in if the water was a little warmer. A particularly loud group seemed to be laughing at the screeching of a young man who came barrelling out of the water swearing something had tried to grab him. Further down the shore it seemed that someone had set up a stand trying to sell grilled seafood and shaved ice all at the same stand. Something that did not seem to call to any of the wayward beach goers. This would certainly be a lovelier place in the summer.

- Komachi-dori
The tourist street of Komachi-dori was alive and well as highschooler and young adult couples seemed to shimmy into the nearby lunch spots and gift shops alike. While the place certainly was a shopping central hub, it wasn’t quite the only one. Still being new in town and having very little directions meant that any shopping to be done would happen here until a better location could be found. On the bright side it was certainly on the trendier side of the city, meaning that the clothes weren’t nearly as specific as some shops had. The shops would have the more out there fashions like Visual and Fairy kei, Decora, Gyaru, and punk rock clothing right before a more traditional shop or general clothing shop. It seemed many things could be found in the stretch of Komachi-Dori. A more mixed clothing shop by the name of DECO MERCEDES seemed to have more room than some of the other stores along the street. Further down a Gangero gal was tossing out cards inviting all the couples to come down to VISUAL B for “The best ramen this side of Kyoto!”.

- Kamakura Mori Hotel
The hotel was small not necessarily bad but with a grand total of sixteen rooms for rent it was almost as if they weren’t running this for business. It would have been curious if not for the fact that the entire hotel seemed to be booked out by SEES. The exterior looked more like an office anyways so it wasn’t like it was that hard to conceive. Coming in through the side of the souvenir shop in the lower level would take some getting used to. Once they got to the second floor, instead of asking if they had a reservation or needed one or were just lost, the woman at the front desk merely bowed and asked for their names before politely pointing them down the hall to their rooms. Toiletries, bathing robes, sleeping yukatas, teas, and many other things were left ready for them in their rooms. It was as if they were prepared for their guests having nothing but the clothes on their backs. They had a curfew, though how enforced that would be was yet to be seen. But at the very least their entryway was locked from midnight to five am.

- Kenchō-ji
The temple was lively. Couple after couple came past, presumably to wish for blessings for their union. The temple itself was Buddhist but it was popular enough and historical enough that it was more a tourist spot. It was clear that praying was still going on as the offering box was rung, but just as many came purely to marvel over the large zen gardens and the dragon painting on the ceiling. Behind the temple laid a far newer Shinto shrine which had tengu at it’s gate proving that people saw this place more relevant regardless of what practiced. Kids seemed to flock to the larger Buddist building with oos and awes. For somewhere that was so clearly a tourist destination there was a strange juxtaposition to see a harajuku gal one moment and immediately focus in on a Zen Buddist monk the next. If one wished to pray they should hope to have the dedication needed to drown the din of the crowd out. In this way perhaps it was an ideal buddhist temple.
