Growing up, Penny knew she was fairly lucky. Her parents worked a lot, and she was an only child, so she was often left with a close neighbor or grandparent before they passed. She spent most of her time at her next door neighbor's house, playing with the boy who almost instantly became her best friend. They did almost everything together and Penny didn't really mind the fact that her parents were gone. She didn't need them, she had her best friend. He was family enough. She still loved her parents, seeing as they were her parents, but they weren't exactly her family. They weren't there for all of her achievements, she didn't come first.
By the time she entered high school and became more self-sufficient she ended up staying more at her own home, finding a small part-time job to keep her occupied and get her a bit of spending money so she could go out and have fun with other kids her age. All in all she did enjoy her life, doing her best to be a good student and a good friend to her best and new friends as she got older. At the beginning of her senior year was when it all started to go downhill a bit when she got the news that her parents had died in a car crash. Penny was torn between being heartbroken and not caring that much. They were her parents but she didn't really know them.
She struggled with her emotions for a good portion of the year before her friends helped her snap out of her funk and helped her get back on track, education wise. She was able to bring her grades back up to where they'd been in previous years and was ecstatic to get her acceptance letter to WDU where she's currently in her second year.
