Backstory:

Reppip’s home village was a small clearing in the Misty Forest, even small by Forest Gnome village standards. The forest, being defended so firmly by the elves, had plenty of fruits and nuts for Reppip’s family and neighbors to live on, allowing them much more idle hours than most had. Though Reppip, along with his fellow villagers, truly enjoyed his time with the forest, the trees, and conversing idly with the animals- he loved hearing from the local elves. He would follow their patrols from a safe distance, listening. He enjoyed most hearing their often critical conversations about the world outside of the forest. He was curious about the humans, much more so than the rest of his village. They lived so little, but did so much. In his many free hours he would play his shawm, and imagine going on wide adventures, riding dragons made of clouds, meeting tieflings, performing for human kings as they rode off on rightful quests…

Reppip’s village, though, was not at all favorable to his constant flights of fancy. While they enjoyed his music, the outrageous stories that he told (often making up whole sagas as he went along, about people and cultures that he could only guess about) were, frankly, annoying. Because gnomes’ lives are so long and communities are so small, these irritations can really build up. This caused his neighbors to often leave him behind when they were all together foraging for nuts and berries.

One of these times, he found a group, an actual group of humans stumbling and swearing through the Misty Forest. As he was trying to build up his courage to talk to them (Reppip was still shy, but also loved to talk), he was able to listen in and audibly whooped with joy upon hearing that they were a minstrel and performance troupe. Before he was able to converse with them, the troupe was stopped by the elves, and told to turn back around. The minstrel troupe had been hunting small game as they made their way across the forest. They paid no attention to the trails. They’d broken branches, and cut down firewood. The elves insisted on escorting them out, with bows drawn. Reppip quietly followed them to the edge of the forest. Once there, he approached them.

He caused a lot of awkward confusion, nearly nude hopping out from under the bushes. This confusion was doubled by his own anxiety. His grasp of the common tongue was barely understandable. There was a lot of back and forth, swords and knives were drawn by the minstrel troupe, but ultimately they could understand each other well enough.

Reppip knew a way through the Misty Forest that the Elves didn’t patrol too often. It wouldn’t hurt anything if he showed the minstrels. Maybe they could share a song or two? Maybe they could show him how they use the lute, for a few minutes? Not a trade, exactly, but just friends helping friends?

The minstrels agreed. And through the forest they went. Unfortunately, the minstrels had run out of food. While they were excited about a shortcut, their main concern with the forest was hunting. They disregarded Reppip’s advice about not hunting. They ignored hs pleas. They ignored his requests. Their hunting caught the attention of Elven Druids. The minstrels, facing down hunger, stood their ground. Reppip closed his eyes and tried to hide, but he heard people hurting. The troupe of 12 was now 10. The elves ran for reinforcements. The elves saw and recognized Reppip on their way past him, despite his attempts to hide in the brush.

Reppip couldn’t go home now. He had to follow the troupe. The troupe ran out of the forest, mourning their dead. Over the next few weeks, Reppip became their eleventh. They wandered from town to town, but it was obvious that they had been falling on hard luck even before the forest. It was as though they’d been cursed. The troupe’s leader, a human man named Alser, took a slight liking to Reppip. He taught him the lute, along with Reppip’s shawm. Alser even allowed Reppip to play on his Viol, even though the instrument was even larger than Reppip.

Alser told him about previous bards, and about the quest for music and beauty. To hear Alser tell it, it sounded as though the reason that the Duskmoon Troupe seemed cursed was because Alser no longer felt the need to perform just what the money called for. Instead, there was a greater beauty out there, something that the nature of the world itself agreed with, making this world a better place. To hear the rest of the troupe tell it, the reasons for misfortune had more to do with Alser’s love of wine and inability with numbers.

The days weren’t great, but for Reppip they were. They made their way along the Sword Coast, usually managing at least to eat and get lodging when they performed. And then Alser disappeared. During the troupe taking turns at a festival at an inn, when it was his turn to come up and accompany Reppip, he just didn’t show up. The whole troupe investigated as best they could, asked around, but nothing of Alser ever showed up. They assumed he’d been murdered, or had just tired of leading them, or drank himself to a drowning death in the river. The troupe disbanded, promising to all stay in contact and wish one another well.

This all happened a year ago. Rumours are that a few of the troupe members joined local brigands or thieves guilds, finding that life as a lone musician did not pay well enough. Another, supposedly, took her own life. There was talk about Alser being seen further north, but there was also a few sightings locally in Daggerford. While Reppip would love to find his mentor, his time away from the forest has made him quite cynical and pessimistic. He wants to find his mentor. He also wants to go home, to his village. To apologize to the Elves, and share his collected stories with his family.
