Backstory: Cassandra was born to parents she never knew. Her earliest memories were her as a child, scrounging to make due in the Caravan City. While life was not easy, it presented her opportunities to get by: The large number of passing merchants made for easy targets of opportunistic theft. Even in these times, she didn't take any great joy in stealing, but with the alternative of starvation, Ward (as she was known at that time) did what was necessary to survive. The urchin, while having the frequent alliance of chance with other poor children, did have one friend: A dwarf child who called himself Flint. The two made a good team: Ward's speed and Flints surprising strength got them through many misadventures. However, Ward's life took a turn when she tried to pickpocket the wrong person.

He was a strange man, an old elf who walked through town in rags and possessed a strange walking stick that almost looked like an oar. Stranger still, his head was all but shaved, and there seemed to almost be a glow about the him. Nonetheless, Ward targeted the strange wanderer for her daily wage. Subtle as always, she slipped a few coppers out of the strange man’s pocket, but much to her surprise he caught her hand in the process. Stranger, instead of the indignation or rage she would have expected, the man simply smiled and let her go, continuing on his way. Something about this strange figure intrigued the young urchin, but she assumed she would never see him again. Fortunately for her she was quite wrong.

That same night, Ward and Flint were returning from a successful day with a little more bread than usual. The sun had already set, and the dark shadows of night hid unknown terrors. The two learned this the hard way when their path was blocked by strange otherworldly figures, with tentacled faces. Ward had only seen these beings in fleeting moments in the darkest shadows, and had no doubts that their purposes would spell the end for the two. The urchins desperately tried to escape, the two splitting up in the hope of someone succeeding. This would be the last the young girl ever saw of Flint. Despite the efforts, the urchin found herself cornered by one of these creatures. When all seemed lost, a blinding radiance filled her vision. When she regained her sight, the creature was gone and the old elf from before was helping her to her feet. He introduced himself as Quarion, a travelling monk. After thanking him profusely, she asked that he try to find her friend. The man agreed, and the two began an ultimately fruitless search. Devastated, Ward was inconsolable for a time, not sure what she would do without her missing friend. Master Quarion offered an opportunity: Travel with him and learned his ways. With gratitude for her life and no other alternatives (and a strong desire to leave Scornubel behind), the child agreed.

The next decade was spent travelling the land in contemplation, training, and charity. Ward learned the philosophy of her master, who held that all life possessed a great sacred light that was to be preserved and protected, as well as the techniques that of the monastic tradition. While quickly showing herself adept at all physical requirements of the techniques (aided by the far more fulfilling diet), the student fell short on utilizing her vital essence. This brought great frustration out of Ward, who saw this as a great mark of disappointment, despite her master's insistence of patience. Bitterness grew in her, and eventually she found her inability to master the spiritual techniques too much for her to bear. She approached her master one night on the road, and gave him her decision: She would leave. If she could not utilize the talents he bestowed upon her, then she should travel alone until she earned the right to travel with him again. The old elf simply gave a sad smile and agreed to her self imposed ultimatum, seeming to expecting this, as by this point her headstrong attitude had long since developed. She took another name for herself to mark the decision (Cassandra), and parted ways with her master the next morning. From there she traveled alone, training vigilantly, and trying to live by her master's ideals. Through these travels she began to have adventures all her own, and eventually found herself in Daggerford.
