Partnering Up

Ok, this is kind of a weird concept, but bear with me on this. What does it mean to partner up? When two units partner up, they're essentially watching each others' backs by assisting each other with killing people and preventing each other from getting killed.

Here’s how it works. In the Stats section you’ll notice that there are two special Rollers known as Duo Rollers. A Duo Roller is a roller you need two people to roll for, hence, partnering up.

There’s the Attack Duo Roller ASS (Assist), which is the chance that your partner will jump in and strike the enemy for half of the Damage output they would have if they were attacking normally. And the best thing about ASS is that ASS can’t miss. You need only enter your partner and Enemy’s Damage related values (Attack, Magic, Defense, Resistance) and their weapons of choice to determine their damage value but I’m getting ahead of myself.

Hey, don’t worry about that for now, just know that ASS means an assisted attack. If you want to learn more about optimizing the settings of partners within the context of the Number Crunching App, check out the Number Crunching App Tutorial. You need only roll one dice for ASS because an ASS attack can only happen once regardless of how many times the partner strikes.

Then you’ve got the Defense Roller BLOK (Block) which is the chance that your partner will jump in and deflect an attack for ya. BLOK basically saves you from the hit and prevents you from taking damage entirely. Yeah, it’s pretty crucial to be aware of, especially when forming defensive lines. This is less difficult to roll for, but make sure you roll a die for each of the opponent’s attacks if the attacker got in a double attack.

That’s All Fine and Dandy But How Do Units Partner Up?

It’s pretty easy. Any two units standing in adjacent cells are considered to be partnered up, and you’ll have to roll for ASS and BLOK if this is the case. Yep, even for enemies. What if the target has two or more units at their side? Well you can only have ONE partner at a time in the context of the app. So when you’re rolling for ASS and BLOKs, you’ll specify the partner’s name. For players rolling for ASS, it’s straight forward. Just pick one of the guys you’re next to.

But sometimes you’ll be rollin’ and you’ll find that the dude you’re trying to attack is surrounded by multiple blokes, or maybe you’re trying to see how much damage/what the chances of getting hit are if an enemy attack you standing next to an enemy. Well that’s a different story.

When projecting damage and hit chance from a unit with multiple options partners, You’ll have to know who their Ideal Partner is. Most enemies will only have the Base values for ASS and BLOK, which is 10%, in which case this unit won’t have an Ideal Partner, because all their ASS and BLOK values will be 10% no matter who they partner up with.

However, if the unit you’re attacking actually has a relationship with their partner (or perhaps the partner has a boost in ASS or BLOK as part of a Class Bonus or something like that), their Ideal Partner will be listed for them in the Battle Topic before the start of the opposing enemy’s turn. The chosen partner will always be the unit next to them who has the highest ASS or BLOK value with them. This is known as the target’s Ideal Partner. The Target’s Ideal Partner and their ASS and BLOK value will always be listed on the Battle Topic Page.

So for instance, during the player’s turn, each enemy’s Ideal Partner and their BLOK value will be listed alongside them for convenience when you’re attacking. But during the enemy’s turn, each player character’s Ideal Partner will be listed alongside them and their BLOK value will be listed for the convenience of whoever’s controlling the enemy.

Relationship Ranks

Now as you develop relationships via Support Conversations your Relationship Rank will go up with that character. Relationship Ranks offer increasing benefits when it comes to the ASS and BLOK between two individual characters. Wanna know more about Support Conversations? Visit the Support Conversations topic. Alright, so what are these bonuses exactly? Well, Let’s talk about them.

Rank NONE

This is basically the Base Value of ASS and BLOK. Everyone gets a 10% Base for both.

+10% ASS, +10% BLOK

Rank C

This is achieved after your first conversation.

+20% ASS, +15% BLOK

Rank B

This is achieved after your second conversation.

+25% ASS, +20% BLOK

Rank A

This is achieved on your third conversation. From here you can branch off to either A+ or S.

+35% ASS, +25% BLOK

Rank A+

Basically this rank is for the best of bestest friends. You can have as many of these as you want. I thought about putting a limit on it but can you really put a limit on best friends? All I ask is that you guys think: given their C-A conversations, do they seem like they'd be bestest friends? If the answer is yes then dew it. You can always upgrade from an A+ Relationship to an S Rank relationship. What’s the difference? Right now it isn’t really significant, but S has a romantic connotation to it. Think of A+ as the highest level you can reach platonically.

+45% ASS +35% BLOK

Rank S

A Rank S implies that the characters are romantically involved. This Rank is the only rank that has the power to fluctuate. See, if you have a Rank S with someone and then you go and establish another...you might drop ranks with your first S Rank partner...depends on the character and their opinion of polygamy really. When S-Ranks drop, they always drop back down to A so establish S-Ranks at your own risk. Also keep in mind… if we ever get around to making child characters, any pairing that reaches an S-Rank will become the parents of a future child.
