GM Post

A shadow leaped between the trees at the base of one of the RIverfall mountains, periodically stopping and leaving only the ever so slight shaking of the tree and a couple of falling leaves mark her presence. Well, that and the large yawn she released after a few leaps. It was early. Way too early for her usual schedule, and her usual schedule wasn't anywhere near easy either. Strict training, diligent service to the tribe, this was the way of life of the Windhide tribe. Every morning they made young kits like her, nearly at dawn, get up and start praticing right after a quick meal, be it magic, combat, or discipline. While all the kits were having breakfast they had the chance to wave goodbye to the day scouts who switched with the night ones to keep watch of their borders, to stop any humans that happened to somehow stumble into the illusions and illusion-based barriers that hid their tribe. Today was no exception, save for one single regard. Today, Kiana herself was the one sitting up on that tree and soon to be jumping over to the next and the the next, looking for the humans. Honestly, no one had stumbled in years! Even if she agreed to it, wasn't it unreasonable to make her do this just because one of their scouts fell sick due to hunger? In fact, wasn't that a much bigger concern right now?

It wasn't that that one scout just so happened to skip breakfast or something. They were hungry for a long time. In fact, the whole village was starving. Decent food, especially of the kind one hunts, was hard to come by around the area nowadays. Hunters often came back for more provisions before they could so much as spot anything. The always empty borders shouldn't be a priority: The hungry should. Didn't the elders understand that? Kiana sighed as she lept a few trees over, knowing it was pointless any...
...way...

"-there a faster path or something?" The voice was clearly accompanied by the sound of multiple footsteps. At least two people. They weren't anyone Kiana knew. Were they humans? Did they come to attack the tribe?

"You want a faster path to somewhere whose location we don't know?" A second voice spoke. There was some spite in it, but with great calm as well. It was like a kit that barely memorized a chant and was trying to recite it while the other kits were whispering to each other. The owner of the voice sighed. "This is your annoying side. Can you not take our job seriously?"

"I AM taking it seriously, oh great prospector." The chuckle that followed the sentence certainly seemed to suggest otherwise "But we came here to exterminate it, didn't we? Or them. Doing it sooner rather than latter seems preferable."

"If there was such a shortcut, do you think higher-ranked adventurers like us would have been left to deal with it? Don't worry though, I'm sure we're heading in the right direction. There was an illusional barrier placed a little further back, and I can see a couple others ahead. The maps only show forest and mountain around here, so it or they must be the source of the barriers."

Finally, the two came into view. Marching ahead was a somewhat older human woman, probably middle-aged even she had a somewhat young face for it. She was "covered" in metal, well, more it was scattered randomly across her body around her belly, her neck, a pair of gauntlets and strangely enough, a headband aas well, though exceptfor the horn-like features it was mostly hidden amidst the woman's old hair. It would be understandable if she was hiding, but as it stood she was just casually strolling down their forest, so full of openings and weakness, the biggest of whcih was probably the pair of glasses wide and exposed on her face.

The second adventurer was dressed in a, if typical, similarly confusing manner. There was some kind of stretched leader covering almost all of his body, again not the best choice of protection. He was clearly expecting to fight, given the huge sword on his back, so why didn't he bring real armor? Surely he could do as much without worry. Bizzare. Well, at least he took care to cover his face with that white mask, and his belt seemed to be carrying some utilities, provisions perhaps. Despite his carefree attitude, that fighter sure seemed to be taking threats more seriously than the so-called prospector. What skills did one acquire with that class again? Ah, no matter- the important thing now was that they were coming closer and closer to the village by the moment. They might want to attack and destroy them. Should she attack them? Call for back-up?

Every moment was precious. Kiana would have to make a decision, and fast.

Kiana the Fox SpiritThis was bad. Even if they weren't high-ranked, she didn't think that she could take them on. She should have paid more attention to combat training, damn it! As much as she would love to just kill these humans, she was afraid that she would be outclassed on top of being outnumbered. It would have helped if she could understand what they were saying. Quickly, think! Think, Kiana, THINK! Time was up.

For now, she would have to tell the elders. Kiana held her breath, consciously hid, and conjured a small illusionary kit about the size of her open hand. It sat next to her on the branch. Carefully, she hovered her hands above some bark...

Scritch, the branch scraped against her sharp nails, and she disappeared as the illusionary little kit hopped from tree to tree in the opposite direction from the tribe. Her vision narrowed into a circular-like tunnel. The world blurred past her as she phased through trees, branches, and anything else that stood between her and the tribe. For now, she hoped that the illusion was fooling those humans. Thank goodness it was her out here today and not that idiot Riolu. He would probably charge first, think second.

She made it to the village in record time. Everyone and everything was normal. Of course, they weren't aware of the two humans looking that were either lost or sniffing them out. Quickly, she found an elder.

The elder was outside training the older Kitsune in combat, and she was relieved that he was so nearby. Her breathing was staggered from the adrenaline, her heart beating harder as she rapidly fired words about the humans trying to approach the tribe and what she'd done to try to distract them. It wasn't her first encounter with humans, but it was the first time she'd seen them not on the verge of death. Many kits might ignore the warnings, but she took the warnings seriously. Never, ever, try to take on a human or monster by yourself. It would mean your death and possibly even the tribe's death.

As annoying as a lot of them were sometimes, she loved this tribe and loved her people. Kiana just hoped that what she did was enough for the elders to kill the humans.

GM Post

The trees rustled as the fox spirit escaped, and the shape of a humanoid with disctintly sharpened fangs and claws appeared and jumped right into the next tree over. There was a small ding sound within Kiana's mind <Acquired: Distraction Rank 1>.

The fighter immediately turned around and prepared to chase, but the human prospector grabbed his arm and shook her head. He tried protesting, but she pointed somewhere, leading him to sigh and nod.

Meanwhile, Kiana rushed to the tribe. Other scouts, placed deeper within into the village, caught sight of her, and look at each in confusion as she passed right by them towards the tribe. Right at the center of the many wooden structures and the tents was an old man surrounded by many small kits jumping around from place to place in a small-scale imaginary battle. A spell cast by the elder would count the number of times a stick hit any of the kits, making the obvious goal of the game to score the mst hits or get hit the least amongst the chaos. Joining that chaos was a worried Kiana narrowly avoiding most sticks and getting accidentlaly hit by others, as she warned the elder of the incoming humans. The old kitsune's withering nine tails, a mark of a most magnificent evolution, dropped into the dusty ground as did his gaze with wide open eyes. Old though he might be, it was rare to see the elder nearly loose grasp of his cane.

"Humans have gotten past our illusional barriers? They shouldn't even have known there were any. Did a powerful human sorceror discover us by mere chance? But by what you're telling me they've came here intentionally. I just can't make sense of this... Fortunately I know how to speak their language, so I'll go take a look myself. Please look after-"

"Eeeeeelder! Humans! Humans are here!" Giodo, one of the inner scouts, shouted. He was nearly tumbling every other step butpressed forward (or backward) with terror in his and leather vests ragged from battle (or from getting stuck in branches due to all the tumbling). "The kits, the kits, we need to hide them before that beast shows up. There are others buying us ti...me..."

The sound of metal against the trees preceeded a growl that grew gradually louder, as the fighter approached like a raging dog with a large sword in hand. Following straight behind him was the prospector, with not so much as a scratch on her. She said something in the same human gibberish as before, which seemed to keep the fighter from rampaging immediately. The elder was shaking tremendously and between the fear and the children that, equally terrorized, latched onto him, he couldn't make a move.

Kiana the Fox Spirit
Her head whipped around as soon as she heard the stumbling scout, and she knew it was too late. How?! Not even ten minutes could have passed since she dashed here with her (awesome) power. Even though she gained a skill out of this, it didn't mean anything if it didn't help. Her illusion didn't even work properly, she thought as she grit her teeth. Kiana could see the slight tremor of the trees as something thunked against the bark. She waited with bated breath as the human with the large sword prowled into the clearing. It was ready to pounce of all of them, ready to cleave their bodies with ease.

She could see it, its want to destroy everything. The other human said something, and the human with the sword barely restrained itself. Actual, high-ranking humans found their forest. When was the last time this happened again? Never in her fourteen years of living. Humans were going to destroy them. Kiana sent a silent prayer as no one moved from their spots.

Please, god, goddess, spirit of the foxes, anyone please? - please, please, save us.

Kiana repeated a prayer out of desperation as she stood frozen in place, unsure what else to do other than to leave it to the elder... But she was pretty sure that the elder was trembling right next to her. Only a few of the Kitsune know Human language. These humans weren't even fazed by the scouts. They were clearly no pushover, so kits probably stood no chance. She couldn't attack... If she couldn't attack, could she try distracting them again? But what if they noticed? Would it be foolish of her to do anything in this situation? One wrong move, and they were all dead. Maybe they were all dead anyway.

Okay, focus. The woman didn't seem to have a visible weapon on her body. Maybe a magician? The man was obviously a disicple in the way of the sword - no, he might even be a master. Kiana felt like she was backed into a corner, at the end of her life. Strangely, though, the thought of death didn't frigthen her. But the thought of her tribe being decimated by these humans terrified her. So what now?

Test the waters.

An illusionary baby kit re-appeared behind the human adventurers and yipped.

GM Post

Kiana conjured her little kit, leading one of the humans to look back at it for a moment with a huge grin on his face, while the girl shook her head and commented something barely audible in the human language. Two little red marks appeared on each side of the male's face who turned back around with some awkwardness. The human female shouted something.

"I'll go." said the elder, approaching the humans. "I'll do all I can to have the humans leave me alone. Should I fail, Kiana, help the other young escape, run as far as you cna into the wilderness, towards where the hunters go as of late. You should be able to find food and water, and in time, shelter to start a new village. Us old folk will buy you time if push comes to shove, as much as we can."

With such parting words, the elder stepped forward, still shaking but seeming more resolute in his stride. He glared at the humans and began speaking in their weird language. The visibly angry tone of his voice was entirely justified, even though one of the humans growled at him like a wild animal and the other seemed less than impressed, retaining her composure throughout. It was one of her responses, a slightly longer one, that made the elder stop, eyes widening. He closed his eyes, as he always did when pondering, then posed the humans a question, to which the human female nodded.

"Children, go gather the rest of the tribe. We need to hold an emergency meeting with as much of the tribe as we can get." The elder commanded the younger kits, who didn't have to think twice before getting on their feet and rushing in every direction except the human's. "So much energy, even though we've all been starving. These humans say they didn't come for us. It seems they found the thing that is disturbing the wildlife in this area. They've come to slay it, and that if not of rour illusions, they would have never noticed we were here. Since the beast also uses illusions though, they want us to prove that we are not working in tandem with it."

Kiana the Fox Spirit
If these humans were strong enough to make an elder tremble, then Kiana didn't think that there would be much of a chance that they any of them would survive. But still, there could be a chance that at least the kits would be able to make it out alive. A small probability because those humans were unpredictable. She hung onto that probability that things would go well. The elder said his piece, and she could see that it was his resolution. He would try to reason and fight if it failed. And what was she doing? Running away? She hated it. She hated running away... There was always something about backing down from a fight that irked her, but right now wasn't the time to ponder on that.

Kiana made sure that no kit was left behind when they ran to gather the village at the elder's command. She watched them go, as was the duty of her status as an older kit. This all happened in less than a minute. Kiana herself was about to turn her back to the elder, but it looked like he had one more thing to say.

A thing that's disturbing wildlife in the area, huh? And they want proof. It didn't particularly seem as if the elder was speaking to her, but she nodded anyway and ran. Right now, her primary duty was to notify any Kistune or kits that might have been missed. Namely, her peers and anyone else who might be slightly outside of the village boundaries. Even though kits weren't allowed to go out of the village without supervision, they all did it at least once when they were kits. dashed toward the kits who were already on the outskirts of the village on the other side. Those humans might be the cause of all this, but it wasn't her problem right now. She was a kit, and they were Kitsune. Her problem and duty right now as a kit was passing the news to as many tribesmen as she could.

In less than ten minutes, most of the village was gathered as the elder had asked. Kiana and her peers were not there.

Kiana had not used [Pathway], but that wasn't the issue. The issue was that some of her more mischeivous peers were unaware of the dangerous situation they were in right now, and she could not find them in their usual spot. She looked and looked for a few minutes, until she finally found them. The girl took one look at them and wondered if she shouldn't have even tried looking for them...

Shisha Shihime#FDF5E6
Shisha and Zarama's mornings began as the sun rose. Work began as soon as the sun rose. Put in very simple terms, the two would manage the animals, manage the plants, look over and manage the farming equipment, and also do all the labor work that does not need to be mentioned in this narrative. In other words, every day was a busy day. When Zarama first found Shisha, he did not expect her to work for him. In fact, he was even thinking of maybe raising her to take over his farm someday. The spark in her eyes whenever she felt happy while working thawed his cold and lonely heart. Zarama is a gruff lizardman, but even he has his soft side. For a young vampire monster like Shisha to appear at his doorstep was almost like receiving a blessing.

He was quick to discover, however, that she was not meant for the farm life. Simply put, Shisha did her best and accomplished all the tasks given to her. But she had no heart. She was not (and probably never will) invest her heart into farming as he had. For the past few years, she had been helping Zarama around the farm with no complaints. He could see it, though. Her body language says it all: I want to do something else. He could see the thirst to explore anything other than this small farm. Shisha and Zarama never talked about this, but he could see it. And because he could see it, he did what he thought was best. He planned to return her. That evening, after the sun set and the moon glowed brightly, the Vampires made their journey to retrieve a kin.

During dinner that night, Zarama seemed particularly quiet. The door knocked. Usually, no one visited at this hour, but Zarama did not seem bothered. He left his dinner as it was and opened the door. In walked two figures, their gazes landing almost immediately on little Shisha Shihime. Zarama kept his eyes glued to the floor and did not look at Shisha as he closed the door. While one of them was a teenage boy, the other was... a woman jester.

"My, my" the weird looking jester giggled, "a pretty little vampire we have here. I do hope that you have potential. Look at that hair! It's like she's my daughter!"

"Shut up, Hansel," the teenager said scathingly, his eyes still not leaving the girl. It seemed like he was evaluating her. "Tch, she has a special ability. Still weak, but I'm tempted not to punch her face."

Hansel blinked, slightly surprised, but then she grinned.

"Well, well," she giggled, "looks like you might have that potential. Your Lizard friend told us all about you. We're here to take you into The Great Vampire Clan of Pilloa!"

"What she means is, we're here to take you to the Pilloa Vampire Clan whether you like it or not. You can try to run, but we'll just knock you out," he drawled.

Throughout this exchange, Zarama was still stubbornly looking at anywhere but Shisha.

It wasn't very long until Kiana found the usual slackers, but it wans't the biggest issue. Finding the slackers wasn't the hard part, getting them to move and go do what they should was. There were three of them, Swif, Yenu and Whisker playing a game of chance with a few rocks with markings on them, and betting on what side the rocks would roll into each time. It was their whsipers of frustration that had given Kiana insight on where the were, thanks to her overhearing skill. She apporached them to inform them of the elders orders, but they seemed ot notice her as well.

"Ah, it's the killjoy." Yenu whimpered.

"Again? Can't we enjoy a game in peace?" Swif complained.

"Well, guys, lets hear her out. I'm sure she's got something SUPER important to say. Otherwise, how about joining us for a round Kiana? Don't worry we don't bite, and we'll do our best to ignore any weird rambling you may still have in you." Whisker smiled bright, almost radiantely, despite the nefarious suggestion. The other two scoffed at this.

"You're only saying that because you're winning, Whisker." Swif retorted. "Plus, we can't trust a tattletail like her. Let's just go somewhere else guys. I'm about to have a luck wave, I can feel it!"

Shisha Shihime#FDF5E6
The teenager and the jester seemed to be weak against tears because they immediately gave each other a look, and then gave Zarama a look that clearly said for the Lizardman to fix the crying girl. Zarama heaved a heavy sigh and finally settled his solemn gaze on Shisha's crying face. When he spoke, his deep and gravelly voice was smaller than usual - he sounded tired.

"Shisha... I'm sorry. I.. I love ya, but we both know that you're not really... happy livin' the farm life with an old man like me. Maybe I shouldn't have done this without your permission, but.. princess, I know you would have said no."

Zarama approached the little girl and knelt down so that their eye levels were more even, and then he hugged her gently. They stayed like this for a while longer, the two vampires in the background whispering furiously to each other. When he spoke, it was in a gentle voice.

"You'll be fine, princess. You'll be fine," he whispered as he rubbed her back in soothing motions. "Please don't hate me. You'll see the world. They said that they'll let you come to visit if you want to. Don't be afraid. You're meant for more than working on a small farm with this farming lizardman."

Kiana the Fox Spirit
It was only when she side-kicked a nearby tree that the three noticed her. With each comment from the three stooges, she could feel her temper rising. Really, these were the most rebellious and most stupid in her litter. She was going to be generous this one time and actually warn them of the imminent danger the humans might pose to them at that very moment, but they would find out sooner or later without her telling them. She was sure that the elder either resolved things or the humans just killed them all already. When she thought of it like that, Kiana really did not want to go back. Still, she had a duty to her tribe... But she didn't want to just give them the order.

Why not spin a little lie for them? If they couldn't read the atmosphere the minute they stepped back into the village, they were just too stupid to sense danger. Though she isn't sure where she's heard the term, a certain term came into her mind: Natural selection.

"I guess I came all the way out here for nothing then," she sighed and shuffled her feet. "And here I thought that I should let even you three know that Elder Hakuna and Elder Matata are having their yearly spar at this very moment. In fact, the whole tribe is already watching the great and rare battle between our great and esteemed elders. Too bad, though, that three of our very own kits-in-training would rather play games out here while everyone would rather see a spectacle that only happens at random once per year." She turned her back to them and started walking in the direction of the village.

"Yep, really a shame. Made me waste my own time, too," she whined theatrically and waved her hand in a gesture that said that she was exasperated. Kiana suddenly paused in her steps and whirled around, grinning. "Why don't you let me join your game, hm? Or maybe...," she pretended to think, "We should play another reaaally fun game!" Her voice was as cheerful and happy as her facial expression. Which was to say, it was very cheerful.

"It's called... Try Not To Get Killed By Kiana. The rules are the following. Try not to get killed by me by the time you return to the village. I have full permission to bring you three back by force from Elder Meowth, but I'm really giving you the chance to go back on your own without me hurting you," she finished.

"So. Would you like to start?"

    GM Post

Swif and Yenu's ears stood upright for a moment as the two turned to Kiana the second she mentioned the elders fighting. They followed this with a look to one another, mouths partially opened in enthusiastic shock. Only Whisker scoffed at the idea, mumbling something about "just when his luck was turning for the better" and whatnot. He clenched his teeth and punched the ground.

"She's just lying." He growled. "Why would the elders start fighting? Plus if they were fighting, Kiana here would have been too curious to come call for us. Who would even have tasked you to? The elders wouldn't call off the watch posts for a squabble. Now come on guys, it's my turn."

"Eh, it was?" Yenu snapped out of his momentary stupor. "Alright, here's..."

Kiana seemed exasperated though, and confessed to feeling like she just waisted her time. She proposed joining their game, leading Whisker to a grin, and reaching out to offer the dice.

"See? I told you, you should have just told us if you wanted to joi-"

Kiana proceeded, proposing a game of her own instead.

The "try not be killed by Kiana" game.

The three immediately stood up. Yenu was shaking, Swif chuckled a little, and Whisker just growled. Between the later two there was a combination of insults thrown at the female kitsune that can't really be translated into the human language, but as soon as Kiana revealed she had permission to take them by force, the three complied. If she could attack them but they weren't allowed to retaliate, lie or not, they wouldn't risk it.

<Experience reached required amount. Acquired: Deception Rank 1> The same voice in Kiana's head announced preceeded by the prior ding sound.

Back at the center of the village, the two humans were watching with a good deal of boredom the events unfolding before them. The grand prospector was busily observing not just the kitsune inhabitants, but similarly taking notes when she gazed upon their homes and the surroundings of the village. She male human instead praticed with his weapon, rocking the large blade back and forth and occasionally taking a swing against an imaginary enemy, only to get slapped in the back of the neck by the prospector when he did, and reprimanded in the human language. In front of them the vast majority of the village had already gathered, forming a circular crowd with mumbling and whispers leaking out like an overflowing river of fearful comments.

"So we have come to a decision." Elder Meowth sighed. "But we will wait for the others. Maybe they will have some youthful insight we are missing. I do understand, however, your feelings. We cannot spare to lend our best, for if this is a trap or a failure on the part of the humans, we cannot afford to loose them in such a time of strife. The village needs all those we can keep. However, we must appease the humans too. We could ward them off, but our losses would have devastating consequences as well. We'll need to send someone competent enough to appease the humans... but not a full-fledged fighter. I will not force any of you, though. Are there any volunteers if we move forward with this path?"

The walk was mostly silent, which might have seemed weird based on Shisha's first encounter with the two vampires. It was a while before she turned around to face them, bowing her head and speaking. The Jester and the teenager exchanged a look before their movements became more natural, like it had been when they first met. Hansel the Jester guffawed as the boy smirked momentarily before scowling in Hansel's direction.

"Sorry, sorry!" Hansel gasped out as she wiped her tears. "It's just, we already know your name. You're soooo adorable!"

"It's not even that funny," he scoffed, "but I do admit that you're not as annoying as I thought she would be. Self-introductions were lacking on our side. My name is Gretel, and this idiot's name is Hansel. We're known as Hansel and Gretel." Gretel looked mildly annoyed as he said all of this.

"Yep, yep, my name's Hansel! You can call me mo-urk!" Her speech was interrupted by a kick to the stomach. Gretel looked unapologetic as he continued to walk ahead, Hansel following him as she whined.

"Don't be too stiff around us. You're going to be meeting our leader, and I would say that he's more intimidating than everyone in our clan combined." He glanced at Shisha for a brief moment before looking ahead again. "We'll answer any questions you have about on our clan and vampires on the way there. It's about two days on foot."

...

The old lizardman watched the three figures walk away from his farm and his home until they disappeared completely from his sight. He closed his eyes and sighed, a hand rubbing his eyes. He'd done it. It was done. Had he made the right decision?

I will go see the world, and become successful! And when I'm all grown-up, and I'm rich and surrounded by people, I'm going to come visit, and bring as much cattle as you want! Just watch me Zaramas!

Her voice echoed in his head, and he could still see her smiling face.

I'll be back

He couldn't help smiling to himself at that. It would be a little lonely, but it would be like old times. Just him, his farm, and some occasional visitors. Except for this time, he would be waiting for his little princess.

Kiana the Fox Spirit
Kiana smiled genially and kept her poker face as she heard the voice inside of her head for the second time that day. It felt like she was getting a useless skill. She'd been lying her entire life, and only now she was getting this skill? Just what kind of skill was this anyway? For now, she put it to the back of her mind. There was still the actual frightening issue of humans being in their village.

"Glad you came around."

The four of them made their way back to the village. It took considerably less time to arrive at the center of the village than the time it took to find them. By the time they all arrived, it seemed like things were settled, more or less. People were still whispering, though, and she could feel their fear. Kiana still felt uneasy as her gaze landed on the two humans, but her outer appearance was more curious. She wouldn't allow herself to be seen as scared, wimpy, or dogged by those humans. She knew she was right to feel this way, but some part of her always, always prevented her from completely hating them. She hated that. But that wasn't the time for this, she thought as Elder Meowth started to talk, so she put the matter aside. Another problem to put aside for later. What a day.

The more the elder talked, the more confused she became. Spare to lend our best? They were going to hand one of us over to them? They want a volunteer to go with them? The elder was giving her a headache, and she couldn't hide her disbelief. She was shocked. There were so many things she wanted to say. Was he stupid? Was this the result of their "negotiation"? Was he trying to soften the blow by not saying it directly that they want to sacrifice one of their own? Sending someone competent enough to appease the humans, but someone who's not a full-fledged fighter. That's the same as saying that they had no option but to send a kit! A kit around her age or slightly older. It looked like everyone caught the elder's silent words.

Mothers and fathers shielded their kits. Only a few of us remained. We were the ones without parents or family, but we were still treated like family by the tribe. Except now. She'd never felt so... so.... betrayed? alone? singled out? There really was no one who would stick up for her, was there? Looking at her fellow orphans, she could tell they were still not ready anything like this. They were all older than her, but they were looking at her. Was it because they were closer to their training than she was? Was she... disposable?

Disposable? Replaceable? It sounded familiar, but it still hurt. It felt like... something crashed into her body. A phantom pain, she recognized, but one she'd never felt before. It was weird. She could feel herself drifting away. Everything felt kind of unreal. She didn't know why, but she said it. She said it, and she didn't know why.

"I'll do it."

Even Kiana herself thought that her voice felt strangely empty.

The whole village stood still, as if frozen, as Kiana volunteered as the tribute. Well, it wasn't really a tribute per say...but given she was being handed over to the humans if she went through with this, she might as well be.

"Kiana, are you sure about this?... No, knowing you, you wouldn't have said something like that if you hadn't resolved yourself to it already. I'm sorry. I really am, from the bottom of my spirit." Elder Meowth bowed his head towards Kiana. He then nodded at a few other adult Kitsunes, causing them to disperse running towards particular homes, among which the elder's. Following this, it was the kit's turn to get their orders. "Go to the village supplies, and get Kiana two, no, three week's worth of her rations. There's not much we can spare, but what we can, we will."

A blade swinging playfully in the air growing ever closer, the sound of metallic footwear growing ever louder together announced the human's approach. They were, it seemed, growing tired of just waiting around for the tribe. The elder bowed to them in response, saying something distressed in the human tongue, then pointing at Kiana, before putting his hands together as if in prayer and visibly begging something from the humans, who looked at each other, at Kiana, and back at the elder. The human female nodded to the elder, while the male approached Kiana, causing the remaining Kitsune around her to quickly back away and observe...whatever it was he was about to do from a "safe" distance.

The human's gaze scouted Kiana up and down. He examined the shoulders, her arms, her tail and ears, the legs... he grinned in places, growled in other, in general keeping a face that seemed more like that of a player in a challenging game than a welcoming or opposing that harsh inspector. In the end, he gave the other human a thumbs up and went for a strong pat on Kiana's back, saying something loudly and proudly in the human tongue.

"I believe they like you." Elder Meowth stated in a bittersweet tone as the remaining kitsune approached and surrounded Kiana, while the human stepped away at the elder's behest. "For you Kiana, who will bravely take up this task, we shall offer gifts. You already heard of the three weeks of rations, however, we wish to aid you further as well. May this enchanting flute aid you in times when you need to call upon the forest's aid. May this charm, long since forgotten among our tribe, rekindle our lost connection with the outside, through your journey, however long it may last. And finally, we shall give you the finest of the weapons among any you choose that is used by our tribe. Which would you prefer to wield? A knife? A bow? Mayhaps a sword or a staff?"

As the elder spoke of them, the goods were brougth: a large dark green leather bag tied with rope to carry the supplies; a flute with a faint magical aura, and a necklance of string with a medal hanging from it attached to three claw bones. A small, cryptic symbol was carved into the medal.

"Kiana, remember: Your task is to guide the humans to the beast they seek. Guide them through the forest, and when you find the beast and they have as well, then you may return at any time. You do not have to stay, or to fight or to go with the humans any further than that. Please, be safe, and smart as you always have been. Come back to us soon."

Hansel tried again. "Call me m-rk!" She doubled over as another kick was delivered to her stomach. The woman shook, enough so that the bells on her jester hat were jingling lightly. A moment later, she threw her head back and laughed.

"Ah, ah! You always have the best gut-wrenching kicks ever, Gretel. I love it~"

Gretel clicked his tongue in annoyance. and scowled.

"Wha-wha-what d-d-do y-yo-you m-m-m-mean? Is-is the le-le-leader that terrifying? Wh-why? Did he do something bad? Is he really strong? Is he super old? I mean, you must be. I'm already 17 and I still look like...this..."

Ping. Sufficient experience acquired. Acquired: Inquisition Level 1

Hansel and Gretel shared a sighed glance and moved in near unison. Gretel started his leisure walk again as Hansel suddenly scooped the little vampire off her feet and onto the woman's shoulders.

"Well, you see, you see," Hansel started, "our leader looks really, really young by human standards. He's also super duper friendly, buuuuuuut~"

"He has a dark side," Gretel finished grimly. "It would serve you well to know about this particular part of our clan's history. If you have questions while I'm talking, it would be better to ask them. It might help you adjust to your life in the clan."

Gretel narrated the old tale of what occurred two hundred years ago. The current leader Myo of the vampire clan is, in fact, the second leader. The founder of the Pilloa Vampire Clan was a man named Zeno. No one knew whether he was a vampire like them, a human, a witch, or something more ancient. What they knew was that Zeno the Founding Clan Leader was a powerful individual, rumored to be more powerful than their current head of the clan.

Fifty years after the creation of the clan, Zeno vanished without a word. Rumors circulated throughout the village that Zeno was actually a human who used illusion magic to appear young, that Zeno abandoned the clan after birthing an heir outside of the clan. No one knows exactly how many rumors there were or how ridiculous they've gotten. The only thing everyone knows for sure is that anyone who talked bad about the first leader was slaughtered by Myo, who was Zeno's right-hand man at the time.

At first, no mercy was shown to the people whether they were children, parents, or the elderly. Many of the clan members felt betrayed and wanted to revolt, but they knew the power of the leaders first-hand when they were protected from the warring clans by the leaders and fierce warriors. Instead of revolting, there was an exodus.

Over the next two hundred years, the clan regained their numbers. Every clan member was taught of the leader Zeno and given warning in their teachings. Anyone who disobeyed was given a warning to not spread bad word about the leader. If the warning was ignored, they were killed without hesitation by Myo himself. No one is sure how Myo finds out, but he always does. The paranoia became so great that no one dared to even utter the word of the leader unless it was to teach about his role in the making of the clan or to praise his name.

As long as no one misuses Zeno's name and abides by the clan rules, Myo appears harmless and very generous. However, all clan members know not to touch the forbidden subject: that is, why Zeno left.

"So, so, little princess," Hansel quipped, "remember to never, ever, eeeeever mention his name unless Myo mentions it to you. Okay?"

"At least, not until you know what you're talking about. Also, we're here," Gretel said.

There seemed to be nothing but the forest trees in front of them. But when they walked past a certain tree, a village blurred into view.

Kiana the Fox Spirit
Kiana stood still, staring at no particular object or creature. As Elder Meowth bowed his head in apology, she felt nothing. When the villagers scattered to gather what little they had to help her on her journey, she still felt nothing. It was weird. Before, she would at least be thankful because they were giving her so much even when they had so little. It was so admirable, and she loved it. But now...she felt a bit dead on the inside. Even though she'd never felt this way before or been in a situation anywhere close to this, Kiana couldn't help a sense of deja vu. Deja vu? That wasn't a word. But you know what it is.

The closening steps and sound of clinking armor gradually brought her back into the present moment. Kiana's eyes shifted between the elder and the two humans, not exactly knowing what was being said but haven't a general idea. She believed that the elder was asking to have mercy on her. Or something of that nature. Either way, it didn't change the fact that she was visually inspected, head to toe, by the male human. It felt invasive, and she didn't appreicate it one bit. A spark of irritation pricked her forehead as her eye twitched.

"I believe they like you." Good for you, was her first thought.

The villagers surrounded her, giving her the three weeks of rations, an enchanted flute, and a knife she could now call hers. Looking at the villagers gathered here now and the village elders seeing her off, Kiana regretted. From a moment of incredible thoughtlessness and stupidity, she decided to volunteer to be given to the humans as a tribute. Even though she'd always say to herself that Swif, Yenu, and Whisker were not worth her time, she would miss their stupid antics and their carefree natures. She would miss sitting in on Elder Meowth's training sessions with the Kitsune Warriors. She would miss her next door neighbor's wonderful cooking. Despite everything she'd said she felt in the past about how she wanted to go out and explore the world outside the clan, she didn't want to go out this way.

Kiana wouldn't be alive when this was over. If she was, would she even be able to come back like Elder Meowth was asking her to? She realized that she was willing to try. The girl who volunteered as tribute tied the packed the flute with the rations, tied her knife holder to her back, and slung the sack of rations over her shoulder. Just looking at the people gathered here, her dark thoughts transitioned into its usual grey. This was her home. It was a little sooner than usual, and not exactly how she'd planned it, but she would go out to the world and come back home.... if she made it out alive.

Even with that enormous doubt lodged in her chest, she gave them all a small smile. She knew it looked sad, but it conveyed her feelings... her feelings of leaving home so soon, so unexpectedly. And then she lied.

"See you all soon."

It wasn't like all the other lies because everyone knew that they might never see her again. Kiana's final lie to them was a white lie.

    GM Post

Everyone in the village had gathered to wave goodbye to the brave kitsune who had taken the task of appeasing the powerful "visitors" by going with them. Tears rolled, adults and children alike, some bowed or saluted too.

    "Come back safe!" Some shouted

"Thank you for everything!" Others cried out.

"Show that phantom whatever who's boss!" The trio Kiana had moments ago been arguing with cheered, throwing their fists into the hair in some clumsy attempt to show support from the backlines. The male human observed the scene with care, and clenched his teeth. He grunted something as he stomped his way to Kiana, staring down at her like a watchman from a tower looking at a messenger at the gate. He hesitantly moved a hand to place on Kiana's shoulder, just a little tap, then he moved out without so much as looking back. The female human raised an eyebrow, but sighed and gesture at Kiana to follow her.

The kitsune village didn't build a lot around the village. At first, one could spot wooden constructs in the trees and even a little fence minor monster were attempting to cross already, seeiing how it was currently unguarded. The male human quickly took care of that problem however, slaying any he could spot, and even showing a surprising consideration not to break anything with his weapon and huge swings. As they continued to walk, however, there were less and less signs of intelligent life, since the kitsunes would build less the closer one was to where the illusion barrier was until that morning, in order to cut the risk of their village being exposed. Not that it helped much with that human pair.

They arrived at the edge of where the barrier used to be. The forest had already become far denser, and it would only get darker and more twisted the further they moved into it. Of course, there were clearings right at the edge of the mountain but... it might still take a day or so to get there. Even if the village was pretty close. The human female looked around and placed herself right in front of Kiana. She opened one of her pouches and removed a small rolled up paper tied with a single line of thin string. The paper itself was probably small enough that it could fit between Kiana's two palms, and yet it was still rolled, and it could now fit into those chest pockets some weird human clothes had. The human waved the roll slightly in front of Kiana, then walked some four steps past where the illusion barrier had been, and turned back around. Then she placed the roll on the ground at her own feet and with one hand pointed to where Kiana came from and with another to the scroll at her feet.

She uttered a single word Kiana could understand:

    "Choice."

As the village view opened up before them, Gretel stopped abruptly. He turned around and glared at the little girl in the eye and responded with shortly.
His face was set in a scowl as he hissed out the words.

"Do not, ever, mention our First Leader's name. His name is Zeno."

With that, he spun on his foot and walked away. Hansel sighed. "Sorry, sorry. He just hates repeating himself. Really, Gretel should learn some self-control, don't you think? For such a softy, he sure does bare his fangs a lot." She giggled and walked to catch up with Gretel, who wasn't walking very fast to begin with.

The clan was blocked by a towering, circular wall of luminescent yellow. Dancing dragons freely moved within the walls, and their occasional sharp movements gave away their fierce nature. The entrance seemed to be nowhere in sight, but guards were posted outside the wall in certain intervals. Each group had four guards, handling a variety of weapons from swords, to bows, to sickles, to chains. They all wore different clothes. Even though their one common feature was the black jacket with a ferocious yellow dragon on the back, those also differed in terms of length and design - some had long sleeves, others did not, some were jean material, some were cotton, and some were even crop jackets. Despite some of the flashy uniforms, none of them were smiling.

Out of all the guards stationed along the wall, Gretel led the way to a group on the right. Only one guard moved from his station - tall, short black hair, and very buff. Surprisingly, his voice was a smooth baritone.

"Welcome back, officers. Myo is waiting for you." He instantly went back to his guarding position.

The wall did not disappear, but a portion of the wall started to glow in the shape of an entrance. They went through the entrance, and everything was bright. They were in a building. To be more specific, they were in a mansion. It was a grand building, a mix between the traditional wooden arts and newer mining arts. The wide, wooden stairs in the middle were flanked by a pair of crystal dragons. The floor itself was a very clean and polished wood. The mansion itself was at least three floors from what one could see from the entrance.

It was eerily quiet. There were no maids or butlers to greet them. However, a young man suddenly faded into few as he walked down the stairs. His smile seemed so joyful as he hurried over to the three of them.

"Oh, Hansel. Gretel!" He cheered. "I'm so glad you made it back in one piece. I heard that there were some dangerous beasts on the loose as of late."

The two smiled and bowed in greeting. Hansel spoke. "Sire, we're honored that you worried about us so much."

"Nonsense! We're a family here." His eyes found Shisha. "And this must be our new child. What is your name?"

Kiana the Fox Spirit
It wasn't long until the farewells faded into nothing but the sound of the leaves crinkling and twigs snapping under her feet. Kiana momentarily glanced up at the male human in armor. When he stomped over and stared down at her back in the village, it felt a little more intimidating than she would like to admit. But she celebrated a small victory in the confines of her mind when she managed to stare back and not flinch when the hand came down on her shoulder. It was harmless, almost comforting in a way. It was confusing.

Look. Even now, her eyes were still drifting towards the armored human.

She also had to admit that the humans were skilled at what they do. The armored one had already killed the intruders. Most of the usual guards must have been pre-occupied, she thought, because this was lousy guarding. Imagine what a mess if it would be if those monsters got their claws on the little kits. She didn't want to think about it and secretly thanked the humans. It would have been better if they let her do it though. It was her duty to her village, after all.

The trio stopped, and Kiana held back a sigh when she recognized the markings for the end of the barrier. They were hidden on the base of the trees, but she easily recognized her tribal markings. Looking further, she hesitated. The trees looked much more bunched together than she was used to, more sinister. She'd been outside of the barrier before, but now the experience felt completely different. Her thoughts were interrupted when someone moved in front of her - the lady human. The one who did magic.

Kiana looked at her, careful to not seem on edge about what she was taking out of her pouches. Magic was unpredictable with her lack of knowledge on it. She had no idea what that tiny paper and thin string could do to her with magic. Her confusion and caution intensified when the lady placed the paper on the forest floor, pointing.

"Choice."

Her head snapped up to immediately lock eyes with the woman. She knows how to speak? How... Why? It couldn't be that she was being given a choice. She was basically sacrificed. What did she want?

Kiana's gaze dropped back down to the scroll. She started to wonder if there was actually anything inside of it.

If she was given the choice to cross over the barrier... she obviously couldn't stay. Kiana had already said her good-byes. How embarrassing would it be if she couldn't even complete her mission? On top of that, she had pride. Was this human woman asking if she wanted to slither her way out of this situation? Or was this a trap behind that confusingly kind display of kindness the human male showed? She didn't know, but she didn't want to go back. Not until she gets them what they want. So she took her first steps as a sacrificial kit out of the barrier.

She looked at the woman, then the male. This time, she couldn't hold back a sigh. Whatever was going to be done will be done. She wanted to get it over with. Kiana wasn't sure if they would understand, but she would try with her best fake smile.

"What is the beast's name?"

    GM Post

The human's gazes followed Kiana as she stepped out of the barrier, consolidating her decision to go with them. The male human immediately stepped out right beside her, while the female human bent down and grabbed her paper, taking one last look behind her before she finally joined up with the other two. Her posture was calm and straight even as she crossed twigs and small mounds of dirt. She marched to the front of Kiana and attempted to grab Kiana's hand and put the scroll in her palm. She then said something in the human language.

The human male sighed and continued their path across the forest. The female gave a stare to Kiana, pointed at the paper, and followed the male....turning back to give one more look to Kiana and the scroll, then going back to accompany the man seemingly without bothering to answer Kiana's question. Their stride wasn't very pronounced though, probably because they still wanted Kiana to help serving as their guide and were purposefully walking slowly to give her a chance to catch up. For a third time, the human female looked over her shoulder at Kiana.

"Comes." She simply announced, possibly a slight mispronounciation on the command "come". Either way, neither of the humans was stopping their advance, Kiana or no Kiana.

As they got closer to the mountain, the number of monsters in the passages only became greater, as one might expect. Already left behind them was the corpse of several forest monkeys, including the evolved fruit baboons. Now they were faced with mountain wolves, a small pack to be sure, and judging by their size, the leader of the pack was already slain. Possibly in whatever caused them to come down from the mountain in the first place.

Shisha Shihime#FDF5E6
"Shisha Shihime? What a beautiful name. My name is Myo," he said softly, a pleasantly amused smile at his lips. His sharp fangs peeked over his lips, a sign of a mature and powerful vampire. "No need for honorifics, dear. These two are just so formal because of their upbringing." His features softened. "I saved Hansel and Gretel from a witch that was about to eat them. They've always talked to me like this, but we're on very good terms with each other."

Myo suddenly paused in his speech and crouched, so that he was level with Shisha's eyes. His silver eyes glowed with power as he assessed the little girl, as if it was his first time seeing her. When the light in his eyes dimmed to its usual dim glow, Myo look amazed.

"You... are incredibly special," he said, "I'm glad that you've become a part of our clan." He stood up and seemed to contemplate on something for a good few minutes. The man nodded to himself and spoke. "Gretel, could you come with me to my quarters? Hansel, I'll leave Shisha to you. Please take accompany her to wherever she would like. Oh, but please be back by sunrise. I wouldn't want you to become hurt. All that time in the sunlight must have taken a toll on you both."

Myo and Gretel walked together up the stairs in silence. Their steps echoed throughout the manor until the click of a door signaled their disappeared presence. Hansel turned to Shisha, then.

"So, so, princess, whatcha wanna do?" Hansel grinned, but there was a distinct lack of sharpness in her canine teeth that seemed so prominent in Myo's.

Kiana the Fox Spirit
Instead of a verbal answer, the lady human picked up the scroll and swiftly walked in her direction. When Kiana saw the human's hands reaching out to her, she couldn't help but flinch as her body resisted to take a step back. The feeling of rough parchment calmed her. She looked up in genuine confusion, not knowing what this scroll was for. The verbal response was not much help because it was a different language. Suddenly, she was regretting not taking Elder Meowth seriously when he said that they might need to know the human languages. How was she supposed to know that she would end up in a non-combative situation with a human warrior and a human mage? Kiana looked back down at the scroll. Was she.... supposed to do something with it?

Her eyes flickered between the woman and the scroll, wondering if she was supposed to keep it or open it. The sudden rustle of leaves and clinking of armor allowed her to regain her senses. The female human pointed at the paper. Was she indicating that whatever was on this paper was what they were looking for? Kiana's gaze was focused on the scroll, missing the look from the mage. She was tempted to roll the scroll open, but she reminded herself that there might be a spell on it. After all, the woman who handed it to her was a mage.

"Comes," the lady said. Looking back at the woman, it didn't seem like she cared if Kiana followed or not... but she was telling Kiana to follow.. No risking this either. She didn't want to die just yet, so she put on a timid smile, coiled her legs, and leaped over the distance between them. There wasn't much distance between the two parties, so her landing was light and immediately transitioned into a walk.

///After a bit///

They had been walking, closing in on the mountain. It was a slow pace, but she had a feeling that the humans were purposely slow in their walk. If this was their regular pace, there was no way that they would have reached the village so fast after she had tried distracting them. Her biggest regret was trying to divert their attention when she first saw them instead of backing out sneakily. Maybe if she hadn't done anything to draw their attention, they would have taken much longer to reach the village. Everyone would have had time to evacuate or something else. It was too late to dwell on things like that. She was here now in this wildlife forest where only the fittest survived.

A pack of wolves caught her attention. Their eyes glowed a menacing purple, but there were only three of them. They weren't in formation. Were they separated from their leader? Night wolves weren't exactly known for their intelligence either, so she couldn't communicate. Damn, she wished that she had heightened smell. All she had right now was her useless enhanced vision. Kiana looked beyond the wolves in an attempt to look at the mountain. Kiana didn't want to go up there.

As a kit, she wasn't exactly trained to fight. That would have been in a few more years when she was of age. Yes, she had the second highest mana reserves in the clan right now. Yes, she kind of knew how to use her magic. Yes, she had a really cool and awesome skill that she could probably let her get away really fast in case of an emergency. But that didn't mean anything if she couldn't defeat her opponents. in any case, this was as far as they would go without her being their guide.

She leaped over the small pack of wolves, not really knowing or caring if they were up to fighting right now. They looked kind of exhausted, and she didn't have to fight them to get away from them. Kiana would lead them to where they wanted to go. She'd only been here once, and she never wanted to come back. It couldn't be helped. She volunteered with the fact that this would be her death march in mind. This time, she was the one looking over her shoulder to the humans.

"You coming?"

    GM Post

The wolves growled a threat as Kiana began approaching them, stepping in front of the two humans who followed her with their gaze. While the male clicked his teeth, the female merely remained an intent observer, going so far as crossing her arms as she watched Kiana. The wolves did not share the courtesy, however. The ones furthest to the right and to the left quickly attempted to circle to the sides of the improptu party in an evident effort to surround them, whereas the most muscular-looking among them charged straight up, some simply rushing in their direction and others going as far as to leap from the ground and provide a good showing of their lines upon lines of sharp teeth and saliva that got flung around or connected the teeth like slimy spiderwebs.

While the human female didn't so much as flinch, the human warrior said something and drew on his sword dashed ahead in a split second as if he was simply taking a step forward without all that heavy armor. Then as that massive blade of his was covered in some form of red particles, he swung it in an upward arc that passed right through where one of the leaping wolves was. One of the halves fell right in front of another wolf, whom the human warrior attempted to cut down like fishing with a spear, though only managing to inflict a large wound on the wolf's leg front leg. The wolf's teeth appeared to become blue for a moment, making a leap to the warrior's side and attempting to carve into his arm, only to find steel blocking their path.

With a total of eleven wolves, ten if you didn't count the one that just perished, twelve if you did. Sitting at the back were three which seemed to distinctly observe the movements of the fight, pumping out their fur like a cat mid-hissing.

Shisha Shihime#FDF5E6
Hansel's features softened as she looked upon Shisha bow her head and scarlet cheeks, clearly showing her vulnerability. No, that wouldn't do. She decided that she would need to show Shisha the dangers of looking so... weak... It was safe here within the confines of their great walls, but danger lies even on the outskirts of their clan. But for now, they would focus on Shisha adjusting to the new clan. They would focus on teaching her their way of life. Hansel bent down so that her eyes were leveled with Shisha's. Her smile was softer this time, but her voice was firm.

"Dear, we're capable of eating many, many animals. If there is blood, there is food, after all." Hansel straightened and pondered for a few moments. Her eyes brightened. "Yes, yes, we'll go eat there. The home of the Ultimate Cook Gordon!" She lightly patted Shisha to the yellow wall that Shisha now knew was an entrance. It glowed once again, and they stepped through into another building.

The restaurant was mostly furnitured smoothened wood. It might have seemed slightly bare because tables and chairs were the only decorations, but that could be attributed to the lack of people in the restaurant. Also... There was a smell that outsiders might describe as strange.

"Mm," Hansel mewed. "Looks like Gordon is already preparing some food! My smell's pretty good. I can pretty much guess what's cooking! Let's see, let's see..." She inhaled a few times. "Blood, cooked meat, and... squid?" It was obvious that it was unusual for her to smell squid. She shrugged it off and turned to Shisha.

"So, the menu is up there at the front." Indeed, there is a giant menu at the front, and below the menu was the bar and the entrance to the kitchen. "New people think it's weird cuz it's not really a menu. Gordon knows how to cook everything, and if he doesn't his attempts are still really, really gooood." It was obvious she was getting lost in her own world, but she quickly snapped out of it. "The writing's pretty big, so just shout your order when you're ready, kay hun?"

The menu was not sloppy, but it wasn't the most neat.

Kiana the Fox Spirit
Kiana's eyes narrowed as magical red specks of light covered the male human's sword. Sword magic, she immediately thought. As the front part of the wolf flung towards another wolf, the remaining half just...slumped and bled out. She outwardly grimaced in disgust at the sight, but her heart was racing on the inside. The strong smell of blood and that clean kill frightened her to disproportions. Knowing that she was going to die was one thing. Seeing how she was going to die was another.

Wasn't this the perfect moment she was waiting for? She could run away while they were distracted fighting the wolves. Her eyes shifted to the woman, the sorceress. No, even if she did use her special ability the human might still be able to find her. If they found that she ran away without even completing the mission given to her, they might just get another sacrifice from the village. Kiana sighed and decided to help a little. Kiana reminded herself that she still needed to be alive until it was over.

The only signal to her use of mana was the specks of white in her blue eyes. Specks of red at the tip of her fingertips of her right hand burned to life, fire licking at her long fingernails. In her left hand was the knife given to her by the Elder. A wolf on the side seemed to acknowledge her readiness to fight and charged at her. The wolf snarled and lunged at her. Kiana tried to dodge, but the wolf bit onto her leg. She couldn't help the pained grunt that escaped her burning hand gripped onto the head of the wolf. The wolf growled at the sudden burning sensation, but it didn't loosen its grip on her leg.

Kiana huffed in pain a few times more before she formed a fireball in her hand and released it right after, burning both the wolf and herself. Instead of weakening, the wolf just gripped onto her harder. She whimpered and suddenly remembered the knife in her hand. And then she continuously threw fireballs at the wolf while stabbing at the neck. At long last, the wolf's jaw slacked and it slid and it flopped to the floor. Although it all seemed like such a long struggle, she realized when she looked up that it had been a very short time. Blood oozed from the bite on her leg, and she was tempted to collapse then and there from the pain.

She had never felt pain like this before. Sore muscles? Yes. Severe bite marks from a wolf? Never. Kiana stood slowly, favoring her good leg. She got into her best ready stance, her fire already burning brighter and her knife actually ready to stab. At this point, though, she wished that the humans would just kill them all.

    GM Post

The fight with the wolf certainly left it's mark, specifically five large holes in her leg, dripping down red and showing bits of flesh and even dots of bone. At least, however, the wound wasn't bleeding to such extent that it would prove fatal by itself, not as long as the fight could be done with quickly and her wound could tended to. The reason was due to the fireballs Kiana had used earlier, whose fire had partially cauterized her wounds. The move she moved, the more those bits would open again, but for the moment they were still manageable, as far as almost getting your bitten off by an angry wolf can be manageable.

<Heavy damage sustained. Status ailment: Pain rank 3; Overriding interference, starting tutorial.>

The same voice that usually gave Kiana her skills echoed in her head again, this time using words she'd never heard of, status, tutorial... It wasn't exactly freezing time as it spoke though. Kiana could see, if she were to look, that the eyes of the three wolves on the back were shifting from white to blue glows and back to the former, their fur seeming to light up in a faint but similarly-colored aura.

<To view status, say "status". You may also view the status of anothe creature, by saying "status" while focusing on that creature. Tip: holding your hand towards the creature may help you focus on that target.> The voice spoke again, almost cutting out the sound from the actual battle with the sound ringing in her own head insisting upon that "status" thing. Meanwhile, the battle continued on every side. As two wolves attempted to flank the human warrior, he crotched as his sword once again glowed with red particles, then he swung his blade in a spin inflicting an enormous wound across both wolve's bellies. The human female unpocketed a knife as a wolf jumped her. She ducked with a single arm raised, and the wolf landed face-first on the ground without any paws attached to its body. The final few wolves decided to rush at the trio, except for the ones in the back whose bodies glowed with rune-like marks before bolts of lightning shot out of them in a literal flash. The human female had just enough time to glare at those wolves and raise her hand towards them, two large circles formed of floating blue squares appearing in front of them and spinning rapidly, then taking the lightning for a ride and disappearing as they launched said lightning upward to the sky. A thunder cloud formed for a moment, before breaking itself apart and forming momentary rain on the spot.

As for the human male, he threw himself at every melee wolf he could, standing between the remainder of the pack and the mage. As the lightning had been deflected, the wolves at the back began taking steps back and forming a closer, growling group.

Shisha Shihime#FDF5E6
Shisha's fall drew Hansel's attention to the ground. Hansel stared for a few moments but quickly realized what was happening. "Oh dear, dear, you've not gotten used to the smell of blood yet?" She looked on with pitying eyes as she watched the little one struggling to stand. "You'll understand how delicious blood is with time, I'm sure. The most delicious to us vampires are magic-filled blood from intelligent creatures. Mage and elven blood are among the best! The best." She finished with a whisper.

After ordering the cow blood, her small glass filled with cow blood was delivered to the table by a tall man with short-trimmed dirty blond hair dressed in a lab coat. "One cow blood for the miss," he grunted, "and elf blood for the other." A pint of blood was set roughly on the table, sploshing some blood on the already stained wooden table. Afterward, he immediately returned to the back kitchen.

"Aww, he likes you! Hm?" The woman realized something. "Oh, he always looked grumpy, but trust me when I say that he's so soft on children!" It was amusing to Hansel, anyone could see that, and anyone who knew Gordon well enough would say that same. Sure enough, the few people that occupied the restaurant's space were smirking or openly nodding in agreement.

"Hm, after finishing this, whaddya wanna do? Talk with the people here? Go explore? There's a field of flowers or we could even visit the guards! We still have a lot more hours to sunrise. Yep! So choose, little Princesssssss" the s stretched out as her voice become increasingly deeper and her movements increasingly slower. In fact, everyone's movements were becoming slower. Shisha's surroundings came to a halt. Everything was frozen. Even if she tried moving Hansel's delicate strands of hair, it wouldn't budge an inch.

Ping. Sufficient experienced acquired. Blood Rush Rank 5 is now Blood Rush Rank 6. Memory Recovery Rank 2 is now Memory Recovery Rank 3. A rush of memories invaded her memories, giving her only a glimpse more of her history as another person in another world. But there was no time for her to speculate on this since the voice spoke again. System override. Beginning tutorial.

Black text appeared before her, each letter neatly appearing one after another as the voice spoke. Welcome, Shisha Shihime. The text disappeared after the voice read it all. In order to see the status window, say 'STATUS'. In order to access inventory, say 'INVENTORY'. All commands are controlled by voice.

Ping. A new quest has appeared. Will you accept?

Kiana the Fox Spirit
Again, the voice invaded her head, and it was when she was right in the middle of a pack of wolves. Great timing, really. The aggressive growling of the wolves faded away as nothing but whispers to her ears. What's going on? Her eyes darted from wolf to wolf, seeing that each one was slightly glowing white, then blue. The mage? Kiana accused the human mage, and she looked to the mage as soon as the thought hit her, but she could see that the mage's movements were abnormally slow as well. It suddenly calmed her.

Okay, okay. Calm, Kiana. The voice said something about beginning a tutorial. It's guiding me. To view status, say status. Her lips hesitated to move, unsure of what was to come next. She didn't want to do it now, not in the middle of battle. The voice urged her, though, as if it wanted her to do it right this instant. "S-Status." She said it softly, resisting the urge to flinch when something appeared before her. The voice disappeared and everything was back to normal, but her mind was racing.

Is this...magic? It has to be. Illusion magic? But what kind of spell is this? It doesn't seem to be hurting me. That's suspicious. If I think about it though, I've been hearing this voice since before meeting these humans. If anyone cast a spell on me they had to have cast it a while back. I need more information. Damn it, I can't concentrate on making sense of this and keeping my eye on the battle!

Kiana didn't want to move around too much and open her wound again. For now, she decided to not look too deep into the 'status' thing and instead kept her eye on anything that could attack her but otherwise stayed put. From the battle so far, it was probably wise that she didn't flee from them. These humans were as ruthless as she imagined. Her help was not needed at all. The two of them had all the bases covered. The mage with her powerful magic attacks and the human warrior with his berserker attacks. Her injury was most likely her own making, and that was very embarrassing. In the end, they were faced with one last group of wolves and the odds were not in their favor. They weren't attacking, for now. She took the opportunity to look at the 'status' of one of the wolves. Kiana picked the one in the very middle and front of the pack. She concentrated, careful not to lock eyes with it.

"Status." She mumbled.

As soon as Kiana called upon it, a single status screen page appeared in front of her. It was a bit like a hologram simply floating there with just enough transperancy to be able to see what was behind the window if she concentrated, while the window remained rather clear and visible. It showed all kinds of information about her, including her species, name, skills, classes, level, stats, even her clothes and even had a small round picture of her on the corner near that blue border. Furthermore there was "bleed" status, probably associated with her hurt leg. None other appeared to notice the screen, and the fight just went on for them.

<Skills and info on specific areas of the status can be accessed by calling them out verbally, with the addition of the word "info", or manually by touching and/or scrolling through the status menu.> The voice once again spoke into Kiana's head to continue the 'tutorial', whatever that might be. The system wasn't anything so convenient as to stop the fight around her though, yet it would appear the two humans managed to finish off the remaining wolves, at least the ones from the front row. Now the human female began preparing a spell to fire at the various wolves sitting a distance away from them. Kiana, on the other hand, attempted to use status on one of the remaining wolves, obtaining the following result:

    token_1 (3).png
Name: Common Female Mountain Wolf Level: 8
Species: (monster) Wolf - Mountain Wolf

The new status window was far more incomplete, comparing the stats rather than saying what they were outright, and only showing known statuses instead of all of them. Another difference, minor though it might be, was that the border was orange when used on someone else, while a status screen of oneself would open with a dark blue border.

A large blue spectral arrow appeared above the human female's head, then cracks appeared in it, and a salvo of arrows flung down on the wolves. One of the wolves growled and attempted to use lightning to destroy some of the arrows, but two others quickly gave up that strategy and instead leaped up, blocking the path of the arrow which carved themselves into their bodies, dead by the time they hit the ground.

As if to answer her question, the floating words appeared above the quest box as the voice read the text out loud, almost robotic voice.
A quest is a mission or task the player must complete in order to obtain a reward. Rewards often come in the form of EXP, skill points, stat points, weapons, armor, or money.

After the explanation was completed, the voice went silent. The quest window in front of Shisha expanded slightly as more words appeared. This time, the quest window showed more detail and even a quest name.

After the quest window finished modifying itself, time started flowing again. The deafening silence once again filled with the chattering voices of the few customers in the inn, and Hansel's movements became animated once more. However, not even a second after everyone started moving again, Hansel's grin faded as she looked at Shisha. The look was gone a moment later when she grinned again. It looked forced. If Shisha looked into Hansel's status window, she would see that Hansel was really confused about something. It would be indicated by Confusion Lvl 2. Hansel's confusion would continue for a few more moments until she notices Gretel coming in through the entrance of the restaurant.

"Looks like Gretel's here," she said. The glowing yellow wall dimmed to a more dull yellow as Gretel walked over to them. He slid into an occupied seat at their table and sighed. "You not gonna eat, Gretel?"

"Not hungry," he mumbled out. "Myo just wanted to talk to me about Shisha. Shisha, you've been called to come to his office when you get back to the manor. One of us has to escort you there, but he wants to talk to you alone." Something seemed to be bothering him, but he said nothing further on the matter. "What have you guys up to? It hasn't been that long since we split up."

"Mm," she hummed, "Nothing, really. We just came here, got something to eat and just finished eating. It really hasn't been that long, has it?" She laughed. "Must've been a real short conversation you and Myo had. Oh! I think we might go to The Field of Flowers. Shisha looked really excited about it just now. Right, princess?" Although Gretel's sudden appearance appeased her confusion, a Confusion Lvl 1 status would re-appear in her status window.

"Flowers?" Gretel smirked. "I'm the King of Flowers. I know all about flowers. I think this will be educational for Shisha, so let me go with you guys."

"Whaaat? But this was bonding time with me and Shisha!" Hansel suddenly looked offended at Gretel's statement.

"Shut up, Hansel. I'm coming with. Shisha, learning about the flowers in the Field of Flowers is almost like learning a part of our history. Think of this as part of the beginning of your education in Pilloa. It'll be fun," he spilled out his excuse for wanting to go with them to the Field of Flowers. He looked very excited in contrast to his glum state upon his arrival

Kiana the Fox Spirit
Wow, almost like a real-life game. A game? No, there were no such games with windows popping out of nowhere. Kiana had no idea where that thought had come from, but there was definitely something familiar about these 'status' windows and the voice guiding her through the tutorial. Whatever that meant.

I feel nostalgic again, but I'm pretty sure I've never been in this kind of situation before. Ever. In my entire life. Kiana thought absentmindedly as she quickly skimmed over the wolf's status window.

It wasn't detailed. At all. And if this system were to be trusted, does this mean that she's weaker than the wolf she just appraised? The thought of that irked her. She was more intelligent than these wolves. Though, she could tell that they were somewhat intelligent from the way they organized themselves during the attack. Seeing that it was probably best if she didn't get involved in the fight anymore, she looked back to her own status window next and properly observed it. She was level two. Even though she only skimmed through the wolve's status window, she knew that she was levels below the wolf. It looked like her skills were converted into mastery levels, but there were no descriptions for any of them. One of them had CHEAT by its name. This was confusing.

Can I make any descriptions appear? She pondered on the question for only a moment. It doesn't matter. I'll figure it out later.

She moved on and noticed that her health, strength, mana power, stamina...everything about her was converted into numbers just like that wolf. Some things like mana vein, mana regeneration, and senses were there in her status window, but she clearly remembered not seeing those things in the wolf's status window. It seemed that this status ability was only helpful for her if she wanted to see if her opponent was stronger than her. Though, it was interesting that she could see someone else's language, equipment, and status.

...She wondered if all people and animals had these status windows. Her eyes went to the human mage who was shooting magic arrows at the wolves. No, that one was a mage. What if this ability was some kind of magic, and the mage could feel the magic analyzing her? Kiana was apprehensive. Instead, her eyes settled on the human warrior. If he noticed her staring, she could only hope that he wouldn't become hostile.

"Status." She said it quietly, and her mouth barely moved as she said the word.

As soon as Kiana called on it, the window appeared in front of her eyes, this time containing's the human warrior's information. Like the window for the monster's status, this one had also had an orange border.

Away from her, the battle was drawing to a close. The biggest of the remaining wolves growled something and stepped back, shooting small sparks at something behind her. The other remaining ones abandoned their previous position to instead cover their bodies with some form of lightning, then howl and attempt to rush down the human female and her partner, who grunted something. Whatever he might have said, there was a tone of almost pity as he got up and effortlessly slashed through the wolves that came at him, ignoring the zaps of eletricity running through their bodies now.

Suddenly, light in that bit of the forest seemed to attain a dark blue hue. Whatever the last of the wolves had been doing so far, its body shining from the inside and growing entirely blue and almost transperant, eletrical sparks flowing in an out of its body and its very eyes and mouth shining with an ominous light, whatever was coming, it was big. The wolf seemed to be expanding now, its body was growing gradually bigger and bigger, but by contrast its skin seemed to be shriveling up, blood vessels popping to the surface like worms underneath the skin, all in a heavy blue color. The two humans had just enough time to sprint back to Kiana, before the human female had to turn around mid-running, and create some form of sphere of spectral hexagons all around them. Then, there was that intense flash of blinding light. Outside the barrier, one could see lightling leveling the ground around them, trees getting tilted to the side and partially burned by the attack. Even the inside of the barrier shook, though fortunately the barrier itself held steady against the attack.

When it stopped, there was nothing but a crater. If Kiana walked there and looked into it, she would see the last remains of a tiny wolf, its fur now entirely covered in black due to having been roasted by the attack, and another not far away, two limbs with scorch marks on the tip of those tiny little toes, and just a bit of the waist left with them, the rest still being attached to the other half of the pup bashed against a tree not too far ahead. There were a few more tiny wolves left, a couple currently hiding in the bushes paralyzed in fear and the rest which had made their escape after being threatened by last of the adults into fleeing earlier.

Shisha Shihime#FDF5E6
Gretel seemed amused as he exchanged glances with Hansel. Hansel spoke first, her bells jingling playfully as she ducked under the table with a wide grin. "Of course, princess! You're right. Two heads is better than one, yup!" She laughed heartily. "We fight all the time, so no need to worry. Just gotta get used to us and our petty squabbles, hehe."

Gretel answered Shisha's question about Myo, speaking to seemingly no one above the table. "Also, sorry to say this, but it's a private conversation between the two of you. We can't be with you in the room. You didn't do anything wrong." He shrugged. "He just wanted to formally welcome you to Pilloa and talk to you about some things so you can settle in. Nothing to be scared of. We can wait outside the door in case you need us."

He stood from the chair and smiled as if he hadn't been sitting there for less than five minutes. "We should head to the Field of Flowers before the sun rises. We could technically go there during the day, but it would be tiring for us. It's more beautiful at night anyway." Hansel raised her head from under the table to look at Gretel, bells jingling again. Gretel's smile morphed into one of exasperation as if he knew what his partner would say next.

"Buuut! We haven't even been here for that long!" Hansel complained.

"Yes," he sighed in annoyance, "but the sun is almost up. Look, there are hardly any people here because it's almost time to rest. Let's go."

Hansel pouted but just swiveled her head to look at Shisha. "Then we better go right now, princess. Sun rises in like thirty minutes! Can we go now or you wanna wait till tomorrow? It's been a long day, ya know. Rest is good too!"

Kiana the Fox Spirit
So his name was Ruji Jogi... L-Level 67?! Her countenance changed into one of disbelief. Why was she only level 2? Were regular demi-humans this weak? Kiana wondered how strong the Elders were. Were they also weak compared to Ruji Jogi? Seeing the huge level gap destroyed any confidence she had in her abilities. Reading through the rest of his status did nothing for her confidence. Unable to access his Titles or Equipment, probably too high-classed for her eyes. He was a mix of multiple different classes, and she belatedly realized that "Mage" was one of them. Kiana flicked her gaze to his face to make sure he hadn't sensed being appraised. Maybe it was something he couldn't sense? Kiana was still apprehensive about testing it out on the woman human at this time.

The battle grew more frantic for the wolves as the humans slashed through the wolves. When her vision of the battle was suddenly tinted a slight blue color, she felt her dread crawling up her stomach. What was happening? It was impossible to not notice one of the wolves bloating, its body becoming more grotesque-looking by the second. She was frozen in her place, not knowing what else to do but watch this wolf self-destruct. There was a bright light that she had no doubt was from the wolf, and she closed her eyes shut as she covered her face with her arm. It was hard not to wince from the brightness. Thanks to the shield put up by the human woman, Kiana was safe.

When she opened her eyes, she saw a crater in place of the wolf. There was...much more blood than she'd ever seen. Though the wolves were the ones to attack them, Kiana respected them by briefly closed her eyes to send the wolves off to the afterlife. She acknowledged that she was absolutely useless in this battle. With the sudden ability to see the strength of other creatures, Kiana felt slightly better about her lack of strength in comparison to the two humans. It confirmed with numbers that she was indeed just a toddler in comparison to these veterans. The woman might not have seen it, but Kiana sent a thankful look her way. Only for a second.

Kiana inhaled and exhaled from the slight battle rush and spoke in a clear voice, "So what now?" She looked at the woman, the one she guessed was the more intelligent of the two.

"What do we do now? Keep going?" Kiana pulled out the scroll and waved it a bit. "Also, what is this thing?"

    GM Post

The two human adventurers walked up to the crater, weapons in hand and muscle tensed up, their gazes fixed on the scorched ground in front of them as if at any moment some monstrosity might pop out and try to eat them alive. What they saw, however, was no different from what Kiana did: the destroyed corpses and barely-alive pups of the former wolf. The woman slowly knelt down onto the surface of the crater, testing the heat by placing her hand in the smoke and waving it a bit. Once she'd judged it to be cool enough to touch, she lowered her gaze and passed her hand through the floor, picking up seemingly random bits of debris, both those that were simply burnt dirt, and those which were once part of a creature's body (now impossible to tell which one). The warrior above her continued to looking to the sides, to the mountain ahead and over his shoulder, continually fidgeting and needing to gulp before bringing himself to look below on occasion. Nonetheless, he couldn't help jumping in place when Kiana suddenly ran up to the pair and spoke to them.

The mage woman gave Kiana a bit of a glare seeing her talk to them, she didn't have time to try to interpret what she was saying right there, but then she saw the scroll she gave Kiana unfolding in her hands. As the paper unfolded from how it was handled, a green light ran across the letters, turning them into a fluorescent pattern that glowed to a borderline blinding degree.

<Acquired Speech Module: Humantongue (basic)> announced that robotic voice in Kiana's head as the scroll in her hand turned pitch black and ripped in half. As it slowly fell like an autumn leave, the darkened paper gradually desintegrated into dust, leaving only the metal from the edges of the parchment to clink on the soil next to the fox girl.

    The human woman sighed.

"I suppose now at least you're able to understand us. I suppose since you came with us we would have to get to use the scroll sooner or later, but to think it'd be with this timing... I'm sorry, but we'll have to talk in a minute. Or, well, I guess you can talk with this meathead over here if you'd prefer. Ask him whatever questions you want, no guarantee he will knowhow to answer them though."

"That was pretty rude of you! Don't give her a bad impression of me like that, she only just learned speak didn't she?" Scoffed Ruji the human warrior, stretching his shoulders.

"And that is exactly why you're a meathead. She could talk before. Just not our language. Those weren't random sounds she was making..." The mage sighed again. "Look, I have got to confirm something, so if you two could just play nice and talk quietly while I work, I would be rather thankful."

With those words, the woman went back to picking on the dirt.
